Dear Diary: Summer Loving
Sure, blood levels of tryptophan are still twice the legal limit, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late for a look back at Summer Diary Ratings from Nielsen. Country Aircheck asked stations that topped the charts in their markets to share how they snared the most shares. Let the No.1 parade begin…. • Townsquare WGNA/Albany PD/afternoon host Matty Jeff says “Cool experiential artist promotions” keyed their market win. “Along with several local concert ticket giveaways and meet and greets, we gave away trips to see Luke Bryan in Austin, Zac Brown Band in Ft. Lauderdale and more with ‘here and there’ promotions,” says Jeff. The station also sponsors CountryFest, which will celebrate 25 years in 2018. “It’s at the fairgrounds, a huge stage in a field that has a massive tailgating tradition and 15,000 listeners,” Jeff reports. Aggregated, the station’s efforts during Matty Jeff the book led to increases in every daypart. “Our new morning show debuted No. 1 25-54,” says Jeff. “And Brian & Christy’s momentum led to recycling listeners in all the departs.” ‘GNA also topped every female demo. “And we were five shares above the No. 2 station in women 25-54,” shares Jeff. • In the northern part of the state, Entercom WBEE/Rochester OM Bob Barnett says a musical change led their success. “In the top-of-mind game, it’s how your brand is perceived,” says Barnett. “At the end of Winter we reformulated and chose not to chase the ‘hot and new’ angle. We lowered the number of currents and their exposure, upping the recurrent hit ratio.” His goal was to pull 25-54 listeners back in, but he was surprised with the results. “It actually increased our 18-34 numbers in all dayparts,” Barnett says. Onstage, the Summer was bookended with the station’s Bob Barnett Stars & Guitars shows “and a ton of outdoor concerts” at CMAC Ampitheatre, Darien Lake to the West and Lakeview to the East. One For The Brooks
“The problem with most anthologies is, artists wait until 50 years after they’re gone to do it. I don’t know how you enjoy it. And then it’s all a bunch of guesses. The cool thing about this is, all these guys who created [the music] are all right here, right now.” That’s Pearl’s Garth Brooks, telling Country Aircheck’s Lon Helton why he recently

released The Anthology Part 1: The First Five Years. It’s the first of a five-part book and CD series – and this one focuses on his early years in Nashville, written by Brooks, with Warren Zanes. The anthology is not just a greatest hits collection; rather, it’s a behindthe-scenes recollection of the entertainer’s pre-fame days through his breakout success, told by Brooks, wife Trisha Yearwood, producer Allen Reynolds, the musicians and songwriters, among others. In the book are CDs of work tapes and early versions of his now-classics, session charts, and hundreds of photos. “We’re focusing on the music and innocence of that first five years,” says Brooks, “and all the stories nobody’s heard. All of those songs were recorded by the same five guys. Same studio, engineer and producer. It was cool to hear their take on everything. And then they interviewed all the songwriters. I’m really enjoying this anthology, and – I know this is crazy, but – I’m learning a lot.” Brooks says one thing he learned was “the faith and trust they had in you as an artist, that they didn’t tell you at the time.” He cites the day he recorded what became his first single, “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old).” “This producer, engineer and all the players ... all played on Kathy Mattea records. They cut the song twice, and it sounded like a Kathy Mattea record – brushes, road piano. It didn’t sound like the honky tonks of Oklahoma. And I’m standing there going, ‘Do I say something?’ Because these are the greatest musicians on the planet, and they’re loving it. And I’m a guy who’s never sold a record, going, ‘Nah...’ I said, ‘Guys, let me just tell you what it sounds like at home.’ And the great thing about the anthology is, they went back and dug up those first two takes. So you’re gonna hear what it was like before it became what you know it to be.” In the book, Brooks and manager Bob Doyle recall when the song lost its bullet: “The single was in the 40s on the charts, and
Page 3
the label quit on it,” says Doyle. We had to go in and talk to them, say, ‘Come on, look around the country, the big stations that are still playing this thing.’” Adds Brooks, “Bob spent his own money, hired independent promotion, and got the bullet back and then went back to the label.” Doyle says, “We were finally able to convince the label to go back after it again. That was when it got into the top 10.” Brooks reports subsequent anthology releases will cover his tours and how national events affected his music. “We’ll end the anthologies with what we’re going through right now, which is the comeback,” he says. “It’ll probably be the most-documented piece of the five. There’s been more footage of the comeback tour taken than the other 20 years of the career combined.” –Wendy Newcomer
Chart Chat
Congrats to LanCo, Steve Hodges, Josh Easler and the Arista promotion team on scoring this week’s No. 1 with “Greatest Love Story.” The song is the band’s first chart-topper and will be included LanCo on their debut album Hallelujah Nights, out Jan. 19. LanCo’s Brandon Lancaster is the songwriter. And kudos to Stacy Blythe and the Big Loud crew, and Matthew Hargis and the BMLG Records staff, for notching 55 adds on Morgan Wallen’s “Up Down” featuring Florida Georgia Line, topping this week’s board.

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Big Machine’s Alex Williams discusses his most influential music: 1. Willie Nelson: You can’t get much better than Willie, as far as being a song stylist and a songwriter. He’s a true artist. 2. Waylon Jennings: He was the quintessential ‘70s artist with rock and roll influences who mixed that with country in the Alex right way. I was really drawn to that. Williams 3. Ryan Bingham’s Mescalito: He’s from New Mexico and that album had the total west Texas sound. I loved the songs and the entire vibe. 4. Guy Clark’s Old No. 1: Excellent songwriting. I’m a huge Guy Clark fan. He’s a huge inspiration to me. 5. Jerry Jeff Walker’s ¡Viva Terlingua!: It was recorded live at the Luckenbach Dancehall in Luckenbach, TX in 1973. I love the “cosmic country” thing that was coming out of Austin in the ‘70s. That was where my head was at with my own album, too. I really wanted to channel that into what I had going on. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I’m a huge Jason Isbell fan but I haven’t listened to his new album, The Nashville Sound, yet. • “Important” music you just don’t get: Dolly Parton. I’m just being honest. I don’t understand her albums. I hope she doesn’t read this! • An album you listened to incessantly: Jamey Johnson’s The Guitar Song album. I’ve been listening to that for the past year and a half straight, every day. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Paul Cauthen’s “ Still Drivin’.” It’s great. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I don’t believe in guilty pleasures, but I’d have to say ‘80s hair metal, because that’s what my dad listened to.

Dear Diary: Summer Loving
(continued from page 1)
• “The right music at the right time,” says iHeartMedia KXKT/ Omaha PD/midday host Hoss Michaels. “Sam Hunt, of course, and for us Brothers Osborne’s ‘It Ain’t My Fault’ was massive. We powered that one right up.” An active morning show helped. “Steve & Gina were out doing the grip-and-grin during the week at people’s offices and events – hanging out where our listeners hang out,” Michaels says. The station was also visible at the College World Series and surrounded it with the “Strike Out Hoss Michaels Hunger” food drive the entire month of June to benefit the Foodbank For The Heartland. • “I’ll quote my morning show partner Natalie [Cash] and say our work in the community is the key,” says Cox KWEN/ Tulsa PD/morning host Matt Bradley. “We have a small but active staff.” Serving teachers, soldiers, first responders and high school sports is the focus. “We have a listener who was stationed in Kuwait but kept up online to get a taste of home,” Bradley says. “He would email us that he was listening along with the camels. We told him we didn’t believe it so he sent us selfies for proof.” Given about three hours notice of the soldier’s homecoming, the Matt Bradley station mobilized to greet him at the airport with his family. “We didn’t do it for the attention, we wanted to welcome home our friend,” says Cash. “To experience seeing the wife, kids and family members there to hug him ... I’m going to start crying again.” While it wasn’t their intention, TV coverage was icing on the cake.

Lobster Role: Arista’s LanCo celebrate their No. 1 “Greatest Love Story” with a lobster lunch, fulfilling the promise Warner/ Chappell’s Ben Vaughn made to Arista’s John Easler that if the single hit No. 1, they would celebrate with lobster from Easler’s home state of Maine. Pictured (back, l-r) are Sony’s Randy Goodman, Easler, Sony’s Steve Hodges and Ken Robold and Vaughn; (front, l-r) are the band’s Tripp Howell, Eric Steedly, Brandon Lancster, Chandler Baldwin and Jared Hampton and WME’s Becky Gardenhire.
• “The one thing we’re very conscious of is playing the big hits longer,” says Scripps KFDI/Wichita OM Justin Case. He also notes his staff’s community involvement. “They are out every weekend helping with charity events. It is really amazing how much ground we cover as a team.” Being live and local is important, and the market leaders are on point at the most important times. “KFDI provides severe weather coverage and we had our share of Summer storms.” Case gives props to MD/midday host Carol Hughes. “She led the station with a 12.1 share Adults 25-54,” he says. “Her highJustin Case est cume in years. Same with TSL – just a really fine effort.” • Cox WHKO/Dayton PD Nancy Wilson says their new Concerts For A Cause have generated great momentum for the station. “We partner with a local charity for each one and move them around to different venues,” she says. RaeLynn and Carly
Pearce helped raise money for Folds of Honor early in the Summer, and the latest concert had Midland, Dylan Scott and Jackson Michelson supporting the Pink Ribbon Girls’ cancer fund. Ratings remained strong in all dayparts with a nice increase in evenings. • Finally, RCA’s Kane Brown headlined WUSY/Chattanooga’s first-ever Countryfest, helping the city’s No. 1 station stay there. PD Justin Cole says, “This being his hometown, the timing of the show and the Nancy Wilson single worked perfectly.” Cole also raves about his veteran air staff, “They live and breathe the station. I’ve never worked with a more engaged team.” Share your ratings story here. –Paul Williams CAC Justin Cole
