#1 Most Added! Thank You Country Radio! Remembering Don & Troy

The country music world took a hard blow Friday (9/8) with the passing of Country Music Hall of Famer Don Williams, followed all too quickly by news that Montgomery Gentry’s Troy Gentry died in a helicopter crash. The shock is perhaps best expressed in the experience of veteran artist manager John Dorris, who represented both at different times. “I was on the phone with Don’s son learning of his passing when John Michael Montgomery called in to tell me about Troy,” he told Country Aircheck Monday (9/11). Dorris and others who worked with Williams or Gentry share stories below illuminating just how big this loss is. Don Williams

Producer Garth Fundis: “Bob McDill had just finished writing ‘Good Ole Boys Like Me.’ I was blown away. I said, ‘Jiminy Crickets Bob, that’s like classic southern literature. Have you played that for Don?’ He mentioned they were going to pitch it to Kenny Rogers or somebody else that afternoon. I was heartbroken. A few months later I was at Don’s house. He said, ‘Man, I’ve got this one

Irma: The Unwelcome Tourist

More than 110 million people visited Florida last year, but this year’s Sunshine State count will include one big, unwelcome guest in Hurricane Irma. Radio pros across the peninsula and panhandle put in plenty of overtime. Here are their stories:

As noted in Country Aircheck Today, WCKT/Ft. Myers took the storm full force. “All are accounted for and safe, which is the most important,” says PD Mike Tyler. Company engineers are on the way to solidify backup power and, in the meantime, the station is streaming audio from their TV partner. CBS Radio WKIS/Miami returned to music at noon today. “We were wall-to-wall with our TV partners up to then,” says VPP Rob Morris. “Every break is post-Irma coverage letting folks know what is open, what streets are blocked by debris and where there are down power lines.” The facility did not suffer any damage other than a tree knocking over a wall behind the station. “We went through a rough night of category 1 winds and constant downpours,” says iHeartMedia WAVW/Ft. Pierce PD Heath West. “Besides the eye, the upper right quadrant of the storm always brings some of the worst weather, including tornados, and that’s what passed over us. We had constant EAS warnings going off Sunday (9/10), but that finally subsided very late. The station stayed on throughout the entire storm with a feed from our TV partner and our sister station in West Palm, News WJNO. Their teams did an excellent job during the storm while we all hunkered down. Today it’s all about clean up. We have lots of downed power lines and trees and some localized flooding. But all in all, we’re in good shape.” Beasley WQYK/Tampa OM/PD Tee Gentry reports, “We’re good. We are live, taking calls from listeners and checking in with ABC Action News. Trying to get as much information out as possible.” On a personal note, “My first hurricane. Not a fan. No power at home, but luckily no damage either.” Staffers spent the weekend together at Cox WWKA/Orlando, “All of us that were on-air throughout the storm or working with our news station here have not left since Saturday,” says MD/morning host Ashley Stegbauer. “The most damage at people’s

Page 4

homes seems to be from down power lines, down trees, debris from homes caused by high-speed winds, and some flooding over near the water. For the most part, it seems like everyone was really prepared and stayed safe through the storm. I haven’t been able to check my house or neighborhood yet either, so hopefully I’ll get to go home tonight.” The station went back to music programming today at 10am. Flooding was a big problem in Northeast Florida. “The city has asked we stay in place,” says iHeartMedia WQIK/Jacksonville PD Cindy Spicer. The St. John’s “river did not empty like it usually does during low tide, so we have a rising tide and evacuations are Cindy Spicer being ordered because of rising water.” The morning show stayed on through the day with updates and warnings from TV partner First Coast News. Renda WGNE MD/midday host Ashley Wilson added, “We had power outages, internet outages and very dramatic winds, but our team managed to stay on the air throughout the night to deliver information. We’re exhausted, but doing okay.” Ashley Wilson In the Capital City, iHeartMedia’s WTNT/ Tallahasseee PD Jason Taylor had team coverage. “We were simulcasting all the Tallahassee and Panama City stations,” he says. “We were spared in many ways. Many thousands of people are without power in our area.” The station returned to music at noon with updates twice an hour on gas availability and power outages. Country Radio Hall of Famer and Red Cross spokesman Dan HalyJason Taylor burton has been there since yesterday (9/10) and will leave tomorrow for his next assignment. “We’re not sure where they are sending us yet,” he says. –Paul Williams

song here, but I don’t know if I can do it. It’s kind of heavy.’ He sang ‘Good Ole Boys Like Me.’ I told him he could do it, I was sure of it. He said, ‘Okay, let’s give it a try. I won’t know ‘til I get there.’ “From Don, I learned patience, respect for great songs and the songwriters who wrote them. Bigger and louder isn’t necessarily stronger or better. There’s a wonderful power in space,

giving things room to breathe. He tried to do the same thing in his concerts. He’d walk out, sit down in his chair and plug in his guitar, tip his hat to the audience, nod to the boys and start the first song. He could do three songs in a row without ever speaking. The applause would die down and it would get completely quiet. Don would say, ‘Well, thank you.’ And the audience would erupt in applause all over again. (laughs) That quiet power served him well – in life, in making records and in responding to the audience. I’ve never seen anybody quite be able to do it that way.” Bassist and AFM/Nashville’s Dave Pomeroy: “When I started playing with Don, I’d had in the back of my mind the idea of an electric stand-up bass that a hero of mine, Eberhard Weber, played. I couldn’t afford it, so I went to Don and asked him if he’d loan me the money for half of the cost. He didn’t bat an eye. I paid him back, but he did that without hesitation. “He got our road band a deal with MCA. We made a record which went nowhere, but we got to make a record – and Don and Garth Fundis produced it. At that time in particular, no artist would do that for their band. Over the years I heard a lot of horror stories about the way certain artists treated their bands. I believe the respect Don treated us with totally pushed me towards this role I’m in now of wanting to make sure musicians are treated fairly. Everybody deserves to be treated like Don treated us.”

Webster PR’s Kirt Webster: “If you ever saw a Don Williams show, you knew that all he needed was a cup of coffee and an ashtray and he was all set. As Don didn’t like to do many interviews, I was shocked when his manager Robert Pratt called to tell me that Don had agreed to a media day at our office. Well, with only one condition: he needed a cup of coffee and an ashtray. The office might have been cloudy with the stench of smoke, but Don made every person that came into that office feel so very special.” Dorris: “Don Williams was the reason I got into management. His manager Bill Hall passed and I was asked by a mutual friend if I would take a meeting. I had never met Don, but I flew to Minneapolis in April 1983 to see and meet him. Ten minutes into the show I was hooked. He came off the stage and asked what I thought. I said, ‘I’ll do it.’ I worked with him until he came off the road in 1988. He was one of a kind. I pull out his music often and listen – it still stands up with anything you want to hear.” Former Sugar Hill Records exec Cliff O’Sullivan: “Don didn’t like talking about himself even a little bit. Everybody in the music business that I came in contact with just loved him, from producers to songwriters to Keith Urban to Alison Krauss, who were on his And So It Goes album. After the Reflections album, we did an Intimate Evening With Eddie Stubbs on WSM-AM. Eddie is an incredible host and has an encyclopedic knowledge of everybody on his show, especially Don. As hard as it is to get Don to talk about himself, Eddie did a beautiful job. And that was a lot of fun.” Manager Robert Pratt: Don had said it was his dream to play Africa, so I set about arranging it. From the minute he arrived in Harare, Zimbabwe to the minute he left, he was absolutely in awe. He was given the Freedom Of The City of Harare. There were thousands of people trying to see him outside the council office – so many that the city council members brought their table and chairs outside. They placed them at the top of the steps leading up to the offices, to accommodate the many thousands in the square, hanging off trees and out of all the office buildings. When Don was asked to say a few words, he was so emotional about what he was experiencing, he could hardly speak. It was a beautiful memory that lived with him right up until he passed.” Dave Pomeroy and Don Williams

Former Sony CEO John Grady: “When I came in at Sony, Montgomery Gentry were one of the only things we had going [but] they were always a song away from the rocket ship. Rivers Rutherford came to see me with a half-finished song called ‘If You Ever Stop Loving Me,’ which became Troy’s first lead vocal on a

single and their first No. 1. It felt good as a record guy to watch them get that, but mostly to watch Troy bloom into that lead role. He was so grateful to everyone for that success. There was nothing made up about it.” Publicist and former Sony exec Craig Campbell: “Montgomery Gentry brought people together, initially because wherever they went it was a blowout party. Two unlikely fans included Queen Latifah, who met the guys at an awards show in LA and called the next week to [book them on her talk show]. I was back there with Billy Ray Cyrus a few months later and reminded her that we met when Montgomery Gentry appeared. She puffed up, got this beautiful smile on her face, and said, ‘Oh ... them’s my boys!’ The other was Maya Angelou, who was moved by their ‘Some People Change’ single and asked them to open her TPAC appearance with that song. When she came to the podium, she thanked them for being there and said, ‘Montgomery Gentry – they are my sons.’ I was at Sony music the day they walked in the door in ’98, and I will miss Troy Gentry for as long as I live.” Dorris: “As I texted Eddie [Montgomery] Friday night, I keep thinking about the old song ‘Precious Memories.’ We had 10 wonderful years [managing Montgomery Gentry], and the memory that sticks out is the first time they ever performed ‘Hillbilly Shoes’ for anyone, including the label, was at Fan Fair in 1999. I’ve been in the business a long time and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a song rouse more emotion, including from the label. When it was over, Troy said, ‘Do you think they liked it?’ That was the beginning of a lot of fun and success. On a personal note, I saw them play the Opry four weeks ago. The last thing we did is hug and tell each other, ‘I love you.’ That’s a sweet memory and very special to me. My love and condolences to Angie and his daughters.” Publisher and former Sony A&R exec Mark Brown: “What a privilege it was to work with Troy and Montgomery Gentry. They did something different from what anybody was doing. I remember the first time I heard the My Town record, I thought it and ‘Hell Yeah’ were the coolest things I’d ever heard. I got to work on three subsequent records with them. I liked Troy a lot. He was easy to get along with. I enjoyed going on the road with them and we did some good work together. I’m sorry he’s gone.” Producer and former Sony exec Blake Chancey: “John Dorris told me about these guys and insisted I go to Lexington to see them play at the Grapevine. The club was filled with friends and family, and after the first song the whole place turned around and looked at me – staring holes through me. I was scared to death. I had to sign them so I could get out of there alive! Troy was a great father and a great husband, and I can’t imagine what Angie and his girls are going through. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone.” –Wendy Newcomer, Chuck Aly CAC
