Ames Construction crews are completing the last stage of the $29 million Doubtful Canyon Widening Project, an Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) project located at an altitude of 6,000 ft. (1,829 m) in the Tonto National Forest in Gila County, Ariz. “There is some paving to be finished and the completion of the last bridge,” said Curtis Bilow, a former project manager and Ames spokesman. “The project took an existing two-lane highway and turned it into a four-lane divided.” see AMES page 44

Temporary roads were established using an excavator and bulldozer to bring the equipment down in order to drill the four bridge piers.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) The Montana Department of Transportation has more than $400 million to spend on highway and bridge repair projects this year — work that could create more than 12,000 jobs. The 2013 Legislature gave the department the authority to spend $438 million in federal and state money this year, agency director Mike Tooley said. About 85 percent of that, or $372 million, will be spent this spring, summer and fall, Lee Newspapers of Montana reported. “Business is booming in Montana,’’ Tooley said. “The Legislature treated us pretty well. They realize the importance of transportation infrastructure investment.’’ The agency is accepting bids through June 13 for several major projects. Tooley said the work is expected to generate more than 12,000 jobs based on a federal formula that 27.8 jobs are created by each $1 million spent. Al Ekblad, executive director of the AFL-CIO said he’s seen estimates that highway projects see HIGHWAY page 36

ASCO Acquires Hi-Way Equipment Company, Expands to Eight Locations Lubbock, Texas-based Associated Supply Company Inc. (ASCO) has acquired Houston-based heavy equipment dealer Hi-Way Equipment Company. The deal solidifies ASCO’s position as one of the largest construction equipment dealers in the United States and immediately expands the company to eight new Case Construction Equipment locations throughout Texas. Since the company has acquired the new locations, it is also now a Gradall and VT LeeBoy dealer in the Houston, Texas area. New ASCO locations include Dallas/Fort Worth, North Houston, South Houston, Tyler, Bryan, Brenham, Beaumont and Sherman. These new locations complement ASCO’s existing footprint throughout the region, stretching from Amarillo, Texas through the Lubbock headquarters and down to San Antonio. “ASCO has made a name for itself standing by its equipment and providing some of the best support we’ve seen in the industry,” said Jim Hasler, vice president, Case Construction-North America. “The entire state of Texas represents a major focus for Case in the oil and gas industry. Having a partner like ASCO expanding in these markets provides a significant advantage to customers who use Case equipment, and will also lead to further growth for Case and ASCO in the region.” ASCO’s product offering includes the full line of Case Construction Equipment, including loader backhoes, excavators, motorgraders, wheel loaders, vibratory compaction rollers, crawler dozers, skid steer loaders, compact track loaders, loader/tool carriers and roughterrain forklifts. The company also has made a name for itself as a premier rental outlet for Case equipment, and that model will be expanded to the new locations. J.W. (Bill) Wright founded ASCO in 1960 and the company is now guided by a second- and third-generation of family leadership. Brax Wright, CEO, sees the business model and vision established by his father as guiding principles today. “We’ve always focused on recruiting the best people, selling the best equipment in the industry and, most importantly, providing the best product support available,” said Wright. “These cornerstones remain a part of who we are and are evident in the acquisition of Hi-Way Equipment. We have a vision of being a premier Case dealer in North America. This acquisition, along with the extraordinary quality of the people who joined us from Hi-Way Equipment, helps us achieve that. “My father taught us from an early age that the way to win and retain customers is to always have parts on the shelf and to provide superior product support,” added Wright. “This acquisition gives our customers throughout the entire state confidence that we have support nearby and will be there when they need us.” The acquisition immediately transitions all Hi-Way Equipment locations to the ASCO name. Three additional Hi-Way Equipment locations (Alvin, Gainesville and Longview) are currently under review by ASCO to determine future plans. advancements. Their dedication to providing customers with superior service and expertise fits perfectly with the value-added programs offered by Major Wire, including on-site screening plant audits, screen maintenance seminars and

our Flex-Mat 3 results guaranteed program.” Major Wire’s advanced FlexMat 3 high-performance, selfcleaning screen media is available in a tensioned version as an alternative to traditional woven wire

and a modular version designed to replace polyurethane and rubber modular screen panels. Independently vibrating wires increase product throughput by up to 40 percent over traditional woven wire or polyurethane panels

by increasing screening action and open area and eliminating blinding, pegging and clogging. Delivering a combination of ductility, hardness and tensile strength, OptimumWire is less susceptible to breaking in high-impact conditions and with highly abrasive materials, so it lasts longer and minimizes labor, maintenance and lost production costs, according to the company. “We add value to our customers by going the extra mile,” said David Baker, vice president of parts and service at Kirby-Smith. “One of our salesman has over 30 years of experience selling screen media and introduced us to the product line. It didn’t take long for us to realize that Major Wire was a great fit for our company and customers. Major Wire screen media increases production and our customers like that.” For more information visit www.majorwire.cc. Thieves Take Record Amount of Copper in Utah Heist By Annie Knox ASSOCIATED PRESS

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) The biggest copper heist in Utah memory has stripped more than 6 mi. of wire from a stretch of Salt Lake City highway. The Utah Department of Transportation first noticed the theft March 28, officials said, but they don’t know when exactly thieves snatched up the wire. The thieves either disguised themselves as a construction crew or worked in the middle of the night on multiple occasions to yank wire from the median of Interstate 15, said roadway lighting engineer Richard Hibbard. “We can’t keep wire in the ground to save our lives,’’ he said, estimating that the department deals with smaller-scale thefts nearly every week. Thieves take the wire to recyclers who will pay for metal by the pound. Officials are shocked, they say, to see a theft this big pulled off on a relatively urban and highly traveled stretch of road. Billboards dot the side of the six-lane highway that’s lined with warehouses, sandy dirt and red rock. “To say the least, this was an extremely risky operation that they pulled off here,’’

said UDOT spokesman John Gleason, adding, “This is by far the largest single copper wire theft we’ve dealt with here in Utah.’’ The department doesn’t know exactly when the theft happened because many highway lights all over the Wasatch Valley haven’t been working. Routine road maintenance in the area is falling to the wayside as workers grapple to replace the missing wire and broken metal boxes. The thieves likely used sledgehammers to smash into boxes of wires running to light poles, clipped the copper and then used cars or trucks to pull 30,000 to 35,000 ft. of wire out of the ground, authorities said. The scale of the heist, they said, indicates that the thieves had sophisticated electrical knowhow. They snuffed out almost a dozen light poles along a mile of highway between 1000 North and 1800 North, toward the outer limits of Salt Lake City. The missing coiled wire will cost between $50,000 and $60,000 to replace, officials say. UDOT spends $300,000 to $400,000 a year to replace stolen copper, officials said. To combat the thefts, the department is considering replacing the copper wire with aluminum wire, which proves less lucrative at

recycling sites. But aluminum tends to short out more easily. Engineers also are working on a plan to bury light boxes along the road underground to make them harder to find. A few years ago, “when the recession hit, it got really bad,’’ Hibbard said, adding that the rate of thefts seemed to climb alongside unemployment rates. With other similar cases in Utah, officials sometimes find car or bicycle tire tracks. That was the case for one recent, smaller theft about a mile south of this one. But the department has not found such signs in this heist, said Hibbard, the lighting engineer. “The most evidence I’ve seen is those beer bottles over there,’’ he said, adding, “That’s the curiosity. It seems impossible that someone didn’t see something and say something.’’ At trade-in sites, it’s hard for workers to distinguish thieves from electricians. Wire from highway lighting looks pretty much the same as demolition scrap, said Mark Lewon, president of Utah Metal Works in Salt Lake City. Electricians, he said, routinely turn in up to a few thousand pounds of copper wire. “Unless they’re wearing a sign that says they’re a thief,’’ Lewon said, there’s no way to tell if the metal is stolen.

In total, the wire stolen in this heist could return between $5,200 and $9,000, according to rates offered by Lewon. Nationwide, police report a strong link between rates of crystal methamphetamine use and theft of the wire, according to a 2010 study by the U.S. Department of Energy. Replacing the wire typically costs three times the value that thieves get for it, that same study shows. Brett Brenner, president of the nonprofit, safety-focused Electrical Safety Foundation, said thieves are putting themselves and others in danger by stealing wire. “They’re messing with some pretty sophisticated electronics most of the time,’’ Brenner said. The theft, he said, results in problems that can hurt and kill work crews that go out to fix the wire. And it throws off electricity grids, he said, sometimes robbing homes and hospitals of power for days. In Montana and neighboring Idaho, police have taken measures against copper theft such as embedding GPS devices in the wire and using them to track down thieves. Know What to Look for in Compressor Specifications By Dan Leiss SPECIAL TO CEG

There are plenty of options when looking to purchase an air compressor. In fact, it may seem as if there are too many options. What makes the situation even more complicated is that a true side-by-side comparison between compressors is difficult to conduct, since manufacturers often rate their specifications differently from one another. However, there are a few simple factors to keep in mind, which can help you find a good compressor, even when manufacturers seem to be playing the rating game. Coming to Terms When it comes to compressors, there are three main specifications that determine performance: CFM, PSI and horsepower. CFM, or cubic feet per minute, measures the volume of air that a compressor delivers. PSI, or pounds per square inch, indicates the amount of pressure behind the air. Horsepower, of course, represents the power that the engine or motor produces to turn the pump. It seems simple enough but, unfortunately, things can get a bit more complicated. That’s because there are multiple methods for rating the CFM and horsepower of a compressor. Even more, there are other considerations, such as service factor and duty cycle, that also can come into play when determining performance. Therefore, people should come to terms with all the jargon, so they aren’t misled into making poor purchase decisions. Speaking Volumes The first and most commonly misunderstood compressor rating is CFM. In theory, this could be determined by multiplying the cylinder bore by the stroke and RPM. However, the formula only calculates displaced CFM. Due to factors like atmospheric pressure, temperature and friction, compressors actually produce less air than this number implies. To more accurately measure performance, other rating systems have been developed. For instance, standard CFM gives the volume of a unit according to certain conditions, such as 14.7 PSIA, 60 degrees ambient temperature and zero percent relative humidity. Actual CFM is another rating system that calculates the true output of the compressor at real-life operating conditions. Because there is no gold standard in the industry for rating CFM, manufacturers are basically free to advertise whichever number they prefer. Some companies choose to be more realistic by rating their compressors with the actual CFM, while others state the displaced CFM because it’s the larger number. Despite the rating method, the most important point is to not compare apples with oranges. In other words, a unit advertised with a displaced CFM shouldn’t be directly compared with another stating the actual CFM. In this case, the best approach

When it comes to compressors, there are three main specifications that determine performance: CFM, PSI and horsepower.

is to ask for the actual CFM of the first unit and then make a fair comparison of the compressors’ air volumes. The Driving Force Another specification that often gets confused is horsepower. For gas-powered compressors, this isn’t as much of an issue. The horsepower ratings on these units are fairly straightforward, making comparisons easier. Generally, the ideal solution is to look for an engine with more than enough power needed to turn the pump. Otherwise, if the engine is underpowered for the unit, it will constantly run under high stress, leading to premature failure. On the other hand, electric motors aren’t as well understood. A person may believe he has a 5.5-hp unit when it really only operates at 1.5 hp. This is the difference between peak and continuous horsepower. Peak horsepower is the maximum output that a motor can produce. However, the motor only achieves this level during startup when the start windings are engaged. Once the motor reaches normal RPM, the start windings disengage, and the motor runs at its continuous horsepower rating, which can be 5- to 7-times less than peak horsepower. If the motor was to operate at its peak horsepower longer than the initial startup period, it could overheat quickly and would likely experience a very short service life. Similar to rating a compressor with displaced CFM, some manufacturers will advertise the peak horsepower because it’s a larger number. Others will state the continuous horsepower. Again, be sure to use the same rating system when comparing units. In addition to horsepower, the service factor can further infer how a motor will operate under load. This number indicates the percentage of continuous horsepower at which the motor can safely operate. For example, if the service factor is 1.15, the motor can run without issue at 115 percent of its rated continuous horsepower. The higher the service factor, the better the motor is at

handling various operating conditions. Furthermore, take note of the operating RPM. Most electric motors found on compressors will operate around 1,725 or 3,400 RPM. The slower-RPM units generally hold more value, since they operate quieter, generate less heat, and produce less wear and tear than faster motors.

likely to break down with it, or vice versa. Belt drive units increase the ratio of how many revolutions the crankshaft makes to how many times the pump turns. In fact, the belt can slow the pump to almost half the speed of the motor, which greatly reduces wear and tear concerns. Furthermore, if either the motor or pump fails, the other component is likely to remain unharmed, and the damaged part can easily be replaced. Next, analyze the overall construction of the compressor. Are the components made from heavy-duty metal, or are there plastic shields and guards? Are the grease fittings located in protected areas so they aren’t easily damaged? And, if the compressor is beltdriven, is the belt fully enclosed by a heavyduty guard? These questions can be answered by simply looking at the compressor, but other features aren’t as visible. For instance, one should ask about the construction of the pump’s cylinders. Cast-iron cylinders and linings are regarded as the most durable, while aluminum alternatives are subject to much more wear and tear.

Last But Not Least Finally, the serviceability of a compressor can add great value. Some manufacturers design their products with wear parts that can be easily True side-by-side comparison replaced. As long as rouQuality Checks Even if a unit appears between compressors is difficult tine maintenance is kept to be adequately rated to conduct, since manufacturers up, these units are likely to for the task at hand, often rate their specifications withstand thousands of hours of use. And if they there are just a few differently from one another. actually break down, the more items to check. EnPak Air Power 40 Offers Reliable Air, Electrical Power

Everything you need to finish the job

EnPak Air Power 40 gives field service technicians reliable air and electrical power in a self-contained, engine-driven unit that eliminates the need for an engine/truck mounted air compressor.

Miller Electric Mfg. Co.’s EnPak Air Power 40 is a truck-integrated, engine-driven air compressor and generator that eliminates the need for hydraulically driven standalone or under-hood compressors, and integrates seamlessly into a truck’s electrical and fuel systems. This allows field service personnel to run air and power tools off one unit and with the truck turned off. It lowers fuel costs up to 30 percent, reduces truck engine hours up to 60 percent, lowers truck noise and reduces exhaust fumes in the work area, according to the manufacturer. EnPak Air Power 40 is designed for service truck operators who regularly use compressed air and generator power but don’t need the hydraulic functions first introduced in EnPak Mechanic Series. This makes it more accessible for service trucks that aren’t equipped with hydraulic cranes but still require the use of heavy-duty air and power tools, such as impact wrenches, jacks, grinders and welding and cutting equipment. This includes industries such as power generation, public utilities and municipalities, transit authorities, waste disposal and rental equipment facilities. “My air tools consist of everything from die grinders, air drills, air grinders and 3/8inch to 1-inch impact wrenches,” said Kevin Conner, field service technician, Brandeis Machinery & Supply, “and I notice a significant increase in the volume of air available with EnPak, especially using a 1-inch-drive impact. You no longer have to wait between fasteners for the air to build back up.” Prior to EnPak, field service technicians relied on either a hydraulically driven standalone or under-hood compressor. This required leaving the truck running throughout the day, which added unnecessary drivetrain hours to their service trucks. EnPak Air Power 40 now runs the air compressor and

generator with its 27 hp (20 kW) Kubota diesel engine, which ties directly into the truck’s fuel and electrical systems. Field service technicians now only fill up the truck’s diesel tank and can run all critical tools with the truck turned off. Combining these functions in one unit provides the following benefits: • Reduces fuel consumption up to 30 percent. • Lowers maintenance costs: Reduces truck operating hours, which yields lower annual maintenance costs. • Eliminates nonproductive drivetrain hours and extends the useful life of a service truck. • Eliminates the under-hood compressor, which is not transferable from truck to truck. EnPak Air Power 40 features Miller’s Air Pak 40 variable-speed rotary screw air compressor that is rated at 40 cfm at 100 psi, with 175 psi maximum pressure. This allows service technicians to use air tools without having to stop and wait for pressure to build. It also features 6,000 watts of generator power for welders and power tools, plus an optional 2,400 watts of pure sine wave EnVerter power for accessories such as lights and laptops. The unit is up to 10 dB quieter when compared to running the same tools off the truck’s engine, and the work environment is substantially improved as truck exhaust isn’t filtering into the work area, according to the manufacturer. EnPak Air Power 40 also features a vertical exhaust to filter fumes up and away from the work area. For more information, call 800/426-4553 or visit www.MillerWelds.com. Helix Electric Teams With Trench Plate Rental on ‘Pier J’ Job As a gateway for international trade, the Port of Long Beach is the second busiest container port in the nation, and 18th busiest in the world. Founded nearly 100 years ago, POLB is known nationally for the 2005 adoption of the Green Port Policy, a commitment to environmental responsibility that is part of the Harbor Commission’s 2006-2016 Strategic Plan to modernize Port facilities. Comprising 3,200 acres of land, POLB projects will minimize negative environmental factors, creating new employment opportunities and causing annual revenue to grow exponentially. POLB’s “Pier J” presents a broad number of challenges. The Green Port Policy calls for green building and cold ironing, or, Alternative Maritime Power (AMP). AMP is an electrical system used to describe the process of connecting a ship to shore-side electrical power. This allows a ship to receive constant power during the loading and unloading of cargo while the ship’s internal engine is shut off. The introduction of this type of electrical system will greatly decrease or eliminate air pollution emitted by carrier engines at POLB’s, Pier J. In business since 1985, Helix Electric has been called upon to upgrade the Pier J’s electrical systems, a project that has promised to pose steep challenges. Helix Superintendent Mike Lindley was aware that the introduction of two new 15kv substations feeding twenty (20), 6.6kv Shore Power Outlets (SPO) to Pier J were going to

To complete the project, 127,000 ft. (38,710 m) of high voltage cable, 10,000 cu. yds. (7,646 cu m) of concrete, along with 26,000 ft. (7,925 m) of duct bank to protect and separate the cabling is being utilized.

present a challenge for his crew of 100 workers because of the site’s poor soil conditions. In order to tackle the 18-month project as productively as possible, Lindley knew that hiring Trench Plate Rental Company to provide the highest of quality trench and underground shoring and safety products was necessary. TPR stepped up to the challenge, well equipped to satisfy the demands of the project, making sure all of the correct equipment was promptly delivered to the Long Beach job site.

To complete the project, 127,000 ft. (38,710 m) of high voltage cable, 10,000 cu. yds. (7,646 cu m) of concrete, along with 26,000 ft. (7,925 m) of duct bank to protect and separate the cabling is being utilized. This tedious electrical work called for TPR to provide QuikShor Aluminum Hydraulic Shores, as well as Quik-Shor End Braces. These lightweight, pre-assembled, pre-engineered QS Aluminum Hydraulic Shores exceed industry standards and can be handled by a single person in most situations for maximum productivity. Additionally, the shores allow for trenching safety at depths of 4 to 15 ft. (1.2 to 4.7 m). The Quik-Shor End Brace, also provided by TPR is a threesided, hydraulic shoring system used to protect the trench walls, while simultaneously protecting the end of the trench. It incorporates aluminum panels similar to sheet piles and maintains the ability to be used in conjunction with other shoring systems, including the Aluminum Hydraulic Shores. The unique product utilizes components proven over years of use, providing extra support for Helix’s challenging project demands. The QS End Braces can be kept up to 2 ft. (.6 m) from the bottom of excavations in Type A and B soils, and at up to depths of 20 ft. (6.1 m) and widths of 10 ft. (3 m), depending on soil type. Pier J also required 1200 ft. (366 m) of bored casing. Trench Plate Rental Co. knew to deliver Trench Boxes and Aluminum Hydraulic Quik-Boxes to the

Helix job site. The Quik-Boxes are ideal for use in tight, small areas, especially in Pier J’s tough, Type C soil. They are easily positioned and stackable, with the ability to be set up for both three and four sided applications. Structural Integrity Issues...

Caltrans Begins San Fransisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Project to Unlock Bolt Problems Questioned Years Ago I-5 Traffic Delays By Jason Dearen ASSOCIATED PRESS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Officials in charge of building a new eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge repeatedly questioned the work and quality control of companies involved in making long seismic safety bolts that broke while being tightened. In March, a third of the 96 bolts failed, and transportation officials said it could take months to find the cause and fix the problem, meaning the scheduled Labor Day opening of the new, $6.3 billion span could be in jeopardy. Hundreds of pages of documents released to news media by the California Department of Transportation show its inspectors found structural integrity issues with some of the bolts several years ago, before they were installed. The documents were unclear about whether issues flagged by Caltrans’ own inspectors in 2007 and 2008 were remedied before the bolts were delivered and installed. The inspectors noted that the bolts failed elongation tests for structural integrity and said they were concerned about the quality of work by a company that galvanized the bolts to prevent corrosion. Inspectors said bolts made by Painesville, Ohio-based Dyson Corp. had failed to meet certain standards during testing on three occasions. Andrew Gordon, a Caltrans spokesman, said the agency would not comment during an ongoing investigation into why the bolts failed. Dyson Corp. also has said it will not comment during the probe into the bolt failures. The bridge’s main contractor, American Bridge Fluor, did not return a call seeking comment. Metallurgists said the documents contained no clear explanation about why the bolts cracked, but they suggested the cause was likely a confluence of missteps during manufacture and installation. Among the most likely problems Caltrans and experts have highlighted: • Galvanizing such large bolts — 17 to 24 ft. (5 to 7.3 m) long — could increase the probability of internal micro-cracks, which wouldn’t neces-

sarily be caught by standard construction industry testing. • Mistakes in heat-treating, which was repeated due to inadequate paperwork, could have introduced microcracks near threads of the bolts. • Hydrogen, which is known to make steel brittle and subject to breaking, could have infected the steel during manufacturing and been sealed into the bolts by the zinc coating applied during galvanizing. • The bolts may have been accidentally tightened beyond the maximum allowable amount, causing them to snap. “This is most likely a perfect storm situation,’’ said David Xu, a mechanical engineer and metallurgist at Berkeley Engineering and Research Inc. “A lot of these factors alone might not have caused this issue, but together most likely could have pushed it over the edge.’’ The threaded bolt and nut assemblies connect the bridge deck to columns and run through a giant shock absorber called a shear key. It’s a massive concrete and steel structure that helps control sway during an earthquake. The problem bolts were made in a batch in 2008. Another batch from 2010 has been installed and Caltrans has reported no failures in those bolts. In October 2008, Caltrans admonished Dyson after finding that a test sample of bolts did not meet elongation requirements, a measure of the bolts’ structural integrity. “Non-compliance elongation is not something I would let pass,’’ Xu said, noting the testing showed one bolt was nearly 2 percent under the required amount. “That’s a pretty big deal,’’ he said While three sampled bolts were just under the required numbers, Caltrans noted that it was the third such instance with Dyson since 2007. The agency did not provide statistics on earlier instances. Documents show Dyson’s fix was to request that Caltrans accept the noncompliant bolt tests “as is.’’ The documents did not include a reply from Caltrans to the request. “What boggles my mind is that this was the third time this happened with Dyson, and we don’t have records for

two previous failed tests,’’ Xu said. “What happened to those?’’ The records show Caltrans inspectors also identified other issues with Dyson and its subcontractors. Art Galvanizing Works, which put the protective zinc coating on the bolts, was criticized by inspectors for using approximate time guidelines for bathing the bolts, which Xu said can affect the integrity of the galvanizing. “The procedure appears to function purely by ‘seat of the pants’ judgment by galvanizing operators,’’ wrote Venkatesh Iyer, a Caltrans structural materials specialist who inspected the site. The inspector also found that Art Galvanizing comingled rods with adequate coating thickness with insufficiently coated rods. “Art Galvanizing Works does not have necessary quality control,’’ Iyer said in the report. Adrian Klein, the company’s owner, said she had been told by Dyson not to comment while the investigation was open. Robert Ritchie, a metallurgist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, said he thinks a mixture of events contributed to the failure of the bolts. If galvanizing was not done properly, he said, some corrosion could have entered the bolts. And problems in double heat treatment could have created a higher strength steel than required, which would create more brittleness. Ritchie said the construction industry is not required to conduct fracture tests on the bolt threads — an area which is thinner and more at risk of failure than the rest of the bolt. The failed elongation tests that Caltrans highlighted in its documents would not have detected cracks within the threaded area, Ritchie said. Ritchie said that if a tougher standard of testing were required, any fracturing within the bolts would have been discovered before installation. Now, with many of the failed bolts located beneath a concrete cap, they cannot be easily replaced, making a fix more time-consuming and expensive.

Caltrans put shovels in the ground Feb. 20 on a project that will bring much-needed improvements to a major interchange in San Juan Capistrano, while creating a new gateway to the historic downtown area. The $86 million project will replace the existing I5/Ortega Highway interchange and increase the traffic-carrying capacity of the bridge over the freeway. “These improvements will relieve congestion at one of Orange County’s busiest traffic chokepoints, making driving much less stressful for motorists,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty.

“We are very pleased to partner with the state, county and city on a project that will bring significant relief to those who live, work and visit San Juan Capistrano.” Greg Winterbottom OCTA

The existing on- and off-ramps at the interchange will also be widened, a new northbound I-5 on-ramp from the Ortega Highway will be built, and the highway will be realigned to reroute westbound drivers from Ortega onto Del Obispo Street. Since 2004, the average daily traffic volume at the intersection has risen from 71,000 to nearly 100,000. The project, which is expected to take two years to complete, is a partnership between Caltrans, the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and the city of San Juan Capistrano. It is funded by the State Transportation Improvement Program ($47 million); Proposition 1B ($31 million); OCTA’s Measure M; San Juan Capistrano ($4 million); and Orange County ($4 million). “We are very pleased to partner with the state, county and city on a project that will bring significant relief to those who live, work and visit San Juan Capistrano,” said OCTA Chairman Greg Winterbottom. “Improving Ortega Highway is another positive example of government at all levels working together toward a common goal.” Along with the traffic benefits, more landscaping will be planted to attract visitors to historic San Juan Capistrano. “Ten years in the planning, the start of the I-5/Ortega Highway Interchange Project is finally here,” said San Clemente Mayor John Taylor. “It will transform the flow of traffic on and off the freeway. When completed, San Juan Capistrano will have a new entrance to our historic city.” For more information and to sign up to receive construction alerts, visit http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist12/ortega.html or (This story also can be found on find the project on Facebook and Twitter at www.faceConstruction Equipment Guide’s Web book.com/ortegainterchangeproject and @OrtegaHighway.

Doosan DXB130H, DXB190HBreakersIncrease Productivity The Doosan DXB130H and DXB190H hydraulic breakers feature an energy recovery system that increases strike power for maximum productivity. The nitrogen-powered breakers are equipped with an upper/lower suspension system that isolates the power unit from the housing, making it an ideal fit for a variety of demanding applications, according to the manufacturer. Delivering up to 600 blows per minute, the 2,822-lb. (1,280 kg) DXB130H is designed for use with excavators in the 16.5 to 24 ton (15 to 22 t) weight range, specifically the Doosan DX180LC, DX190W and DX210W. Rated in the 3,000 ft.-lb. impact energy class, the DXB130H requires a hydraulic flow rate of between 23.8 and 37 gal. (90 and 140 L) per minute. The 3,698-lb. (1,677 kg) DXB190H is designed for use with excavators in the 23 to 34 ton (21 to 31 t) weight range, which includes the DX225LC, DX235LCR, DX255LC and DX300LC Doosan excavators. The DXB190H is rated in the 6,000 ft.-lb. impact energy class and requires a hydraulic flow rate of between 31.7 and 47.5 gal. (120 and 180 L) per minute. The DXB190H is engineered with Doosan’s two-speed control, which also is available on the DXB260H breaker. With two speeds, the DXB190H breaker frequency can be manually adjusted between low and high frequency settings. This allows the operator to match the

breaker impact rate to the working conditions for optimized productivity. The energy recovery system captures the piston’s rebound energy and uses it to increase strike power, maximizing performance. At the same time, the main control valve system optimizes strike power. Blank-fire protection is standard on both the DXB130H and the DXB190H, and is accomplished by using a cushion of oil at the base of the piston, which reduces the metal-to-metal contact in case of a blank fire situation. The breakers’ suspension system extends excavator work group life by absorbing harmful vibrations and stress waves. Also, a main valve design reduces hydraulic pressure peaks that can reduce pump life, crack excavator work group welds and cause system overheating. The cradle-mounted grease station delivers continuous grease flow, reducing bushing and tool wear while minimizing maintenance costs and downtime. The DXB130H and DXB190H breakers also come with a mounting cap, auxiliary hydraulic hoses, two moil points, toolbox and a nitrogen checking device. A one-year limited warranty also comes standard. In addition to the general purpose moil, working tools available for the DXB130H and DXB190H include a blunt tool, a chisel and a pyramidal or “nail” point. For more information, visit www.doosanequipment.com.

With two speeds, the DXB190H breaker frequency can be manually adjusted between low and high frequency settings. This allows the operator to match the breaker impact rate to the working conditions for optimized productivity.

Ames Construction crews are completing the last stage of the $29 million Doubtful Canyon Widening Project, an Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) project located at an altitude of 6,000 ft. (1,829 m) in the Tonto National Forest in Gila County, Ariz.

The first major bridge is a five-span 650 ft. (198 m) long bridge and the one under construction is a four-span 400ft. (122 m) long bridge.

Ames Builds Bridges 6,000 Feet Up in Arizona Mountains AMES from page 1

The new section is 3 mi. (4.8 m) long (it has rubberized asphalt) and has six new concrete bridges (two highway bridges spanning the 100 ft. deep canyon and four wildlife crossings — singlespan bridges for elk, deer and other animals to use). The project also is improving existing drainage systems, providing additional fencing to protect elk and other wildlife, and bringing in new signage, striping and guardrails. SR 260 serves as the principal route for Phoenix residents seeking to escape the heat to visit the nearby mountains. The project began in October/November 2010 and should be complete this June. The first major bridge is a five-span 650 ft. (198 m) long bridge and the one under construction is a four-span 400-ft. (122 m) long bridge. “The wildlife crossings are working very well and have greatly reduced the amount of accidents,” said Bilow, whose firm’s headquarters are in Minnesota. “The new fencing helps to funnel the animals towards the crossings.” The old section had no bridges and rebuilding the road required serious blasting (conducted by Ames crews) to create a new road base — more than 1.5 million cu. yds. (1.15 million cu m) of mixed geological rock was loosened and removed from the site. The pavement from the old road, 16,000 tons (14,515 t), was milled up and blended with new materials for the base course. Because Doubtful Canyon is part of a national forest, managing environmental concerns are an important part of the project. Ames had to clear 82 acres (33

ha) of woods, primarily pines and was required to save as many trees as possible for replanting after the work is complete. “We salvaged a significant amount of trees and set up a nursery,” said Bilow, pointing out that Arbor Car Specialist was brought in for this work. “Once the new road bed was completed, laying down new lanes began, but it is the bridge construction that is posing the major challenges — especially getting equipment down to the canyon’s bottom. “On top of that,” continued Bilow, “we are within a quarter-mile of an impaired waterway and there are environmental restrictions. We had to implement erosion control measures and we had a full-time erosion control manager to make sure that we weren’t putting anything into that area. We also had to do monitoring and testing every time we had a one-quarter inch of rain or snow.” Temporary roads were established using an excavator and bulldozer to bring the equipment down in order to drill the four bridge piers. “Even the cranes had to be brought down in sections and then assembled,” said Bilow. “When we finished our work, we graded the roads, planted trees and made the area look as natural as possible. The bridges were the critical path. For the second bridge, the substructure is done and they just have to do the caps and the bridge deck.” Ames is working with many stakeholders, including representatives from the national forest — who attended weekly meetings and participated in the planning — tree clearing and replanting, placing rock and other materials, etc.), a

nearby Boy Scout ranch, state game and fish officials (because of the wildlife crossings) and federal authorities. Because the project exceeded $20 million, these officials reviewed all change orders and had to give their approvals. Managing traffic also was a major issue, which affected work schedules. “We couldn’t impact traffic from noon on Friday until 9 a.m. Monday and even during the day, it is pretty heavily traveled,” said Bilow, “so a lot of material ended up being moved at night. ADOT understood the many challenges we were facing and as long as you had all your safety procedures and traffic control devices in place, we were fine.” As a company, Ames primarily uses Caterpillar equipment which it purchases from company dealerships in the many states where it operates. On this project it was using six 631 scrapers, one D10 bulldozer, three 773 haul trucks, several 375 excavators, and a 988 loader. The Groves 350 ton crane used for the project was rented from Southwest Crane. “We have a great agreement and relationship with Caterpillar and have been using their equipment for the past 50 years,” said Bilow. In the Phoenix area, Ames purchases its equipment from the local Empire CAT dealership. Stuart Jansa has been the project manager for the Doubtful Canyon project for the past year and has about 30 workers on site. Scott Nielson is the Ames equipment manager for the region and the onsite mechanic is Mark Brooks, who has two or three mechanics at the work see AMES page 58

While being in the mountains avoids the desert heat and dust, it raises other issues for equipment maintenance.

Ames has an equipment depot set up for maintenance work, storage of parts, tools, fuel and various oils.

As a company, Ames primarily uses Caterpillar equipment, which it purchases from company dealerships in the many states where it operates.

Dynapac Announces CA-Series Mid-Range Soil Compactors Dynapac’s fifth-generation CA2500 through CA4000 mid-range soil compactors can be equipped with multiple levels of compaction control from the basic compaction meter with new active bounce control technology to the full compaction optimizer. With the needs of road builders in mind, the range is ready to be paired with Dynapac’s Intelligent Compaction solution, the compaction analyzer. Design engineers worked to place these machines at the center of a system covering the three stages required for optimum results on a project: pre-rolling preparation, performance during rolling and post-rolling “validation,” which includes activities such as documentation for quality control and for acceptance. The operator takes charge of the CA-Series roller from either an open platform or a climate controlled comfort cab with a seat that allows up to 180 degrees of movement in unison with the steering column and display cluster. All machine functions are at the operator’s fingertips and comfort is further enhanced by the tilt steering wheel and adjustable seat. Loss of traction, even in the toughest conditions, is swiftly counteracted by an easy-to-use toggling gear shifting system, or with an optional passive anti-spin traction system.

ommend amplitude settings, rolling speed and number of passes for optimum performance. The software also provides information on the expected depth effect and density that should be achieved after any given number of passes. Optimizing compaction effort, Cheney said, saves fuel for lower cost-per-compacted yard and reduces overall environmental impact. Performance Stage During compaction, or the performance stage, the Dynapac compaction meter and compaction analyzer present continuously updated information to the operator’s display screen. Cheney said the operator always sees the density of the material being compacted and the exact position of the roller in relation to a selected reference line and can direct additional compaction energy to specific areas as required. The Dynapac CA rollers in this mid-range class have static linear loads of 140 to 250 lb./in. (25 to 45 kg/cm) with amplitudes of 2.0 or 1.8 mm / 0.8 mm. Cheney said the optimization of each machine’s linear load relative to the vibratory force applied maximizes depth effect, meaning higher volume capacity for compaction with fewer passes. An added benefit of equipping the roller with Dynapac’s compaction meter is the new “active bounce control,” which stops unnecessary wear on the roller and prevents material damage from over-compaction.

Preparation Stage According to Shawn Cheney, Dynapac vice-president and business line manager, the preparation stage more fully supports “project planning.” He explained that equipping rollers with the Dynapac Compaction Analyzer and GPS allows operators to make a pre-compaction pass to chart ground conditions. The pass determines the properties of the material to be compacted and also will reveal weak areas before rolling starts. For preparation at the office, before machines are even sent to a job site, Dynapac’s CompBase software provides detailed compaction planning and production information for Dynapac machines on a wide range of unbound materials. A project manager can input the machine model, material type, its thickness and the degree of compaction desired and CompBase will help determine the comThe Dynapac CA3500 soil compactor. paction effort necessary to achieve it, rec-

ity documentation can be generated for quality assurance and acceptance inspection requirements. Results from quality control can be collected together in one system using data from the acceptance inspection. Engine, Operating Cost Engine offerings for the CA2500 through CA4000 rollers vary by size but include the customer’s choice of either Cummins four- or Deutz six-cylinder diesels, both interim Tier IV certified. These machines feature Dynapac’s innovative cross-mounted engine with easy-open hood to provide unparalleled service and maintenance access. Customers who choose the anti-spin traction package will benefit from the Dynapac ECO mode fuel saving system, ensuring that the roller does not consume more power than needed at any time. ECO mode minimizes both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. For more information, visit www.dynapac.us. WHILE SOME PEOPLE ARE HAVING A PROBLEM GRASPING THE CONCEPT, THEY’RE SURE NOT HAVING ANY DIFFICULTY GRABBING THE RESULTS. It’s a rubber tire roller that vibrates with enough centrifugal force to equal the output of a 55,000 pound pneumatic. The GW750 handles the toughest HMA mixes with ease, getting balanced high densities from the top through the bottom of the mat. Great on SMA, too! And it provides a sound interlock between new overlays and profiled surfaces. It’s bonus time!

site to handle maintenance issues. “The majority of the repairs and regular maintenance are done on site,” said Bilow, who added that Ames is bringing in electronic monitoring systems to help with vehicle maintenance. “It’s giving us a better utilization of our equipment and it is generating cost savings and is extending the lifespan of various components,” said Nielson, who added vehicles used for the Doubtful Canyon project are being electronically monitored. “The mountainous terrain can impact the monitoring systems, but they work most of the time. When we get into tight areas, communications can be lost for a few minutes.” While being in the mountains avoids the desert heat and dust, it raises other issues for equipment maintenance. “The snow melted in mid-March, but it was a factor to be reckoned with and in the summer you get temperatures up to 95 fahrenheit,” said Bilow, “The weather is comparable to the mid-west. The rock was hard on the equipment and that was a whole extra level of maintenance and awareness. We worked through the winters and we also had a lot of rain up there, which has an impact on the crews and equipment.”
