“April showers bring May flowers” – This has definitely been true for the West Coast, where we’ve had more than the average rain fall; hopefully this means a great summer! For our Eastern side, a milder winter than normal meant many more days outside, without constant snow or freezing rain. The 2017 APNA Truck Show is just around the corner, slated for June 10th and 11th at Tradex in Abbotsford. This year, again, the APNA Truck Show promises to be a packed, fun-filled and memorable event, with attendees hoping to win the grand prize: a brand new Hyundai trailer, valued at over $40,000! With all proceeds going to the BC Children’s Wish Foundation, it’s a win-win situation for everyone. In this issue, we look at the evolution of truck shows. Ray Gompf gives his insights on how they will continue to make an impact in the future, providing such shows cater to the regional needs of truckers and related businesses across North America. One of the most important changes happening is the implementation of Electronic Logging Devices (ELD), which are a requirement by the end of this year. ELD’s are aimed at making the transport industry safer for all those on the road. Stay safe on the road, share the roads, and keep on trucking!

their rides, and have a fun weekend. Some of these shows have sponsorship from local dealers of manufacturers rather than the manufacturer themselves. Some of the shows are themed events, like “Trucking for a Cure”, in which funds are raised for specific causes; in this particular case, the fight against breast cancer. Trucking shows, like everything else, follow and ebb and flow. They thrive for a time, then complacency sets in and the wain phase kicks in until the bean counter says “either do something to improve the situation, or shut it down”. Apparently, with the Fergus Truck Show, the bean counter didn’t complain quickly enough because the Fergus Truck Show, a show that was on the calendar of 50,000 people for almost thirty

years folded its tent this year and will be no longer be held. There also used to be a good little truck show in a little town called Stirling, Ontario. The Stirling show was the brainchild of a Service Group as a fund raiser, but the Stirling show became a victim of its own success. Being run 100% by volunteers, the show had to close because it outstripped the capabilities of the volunteers. The volunteer run show isn’t always a poor business model but it certainly does have its limitations. If you take, for example, the “Trucking for a Cure” model, Joanne MacKenzie has been organizing it since it was “Convoy for a Cure” for the better part of ten years or more. Jo-Jo (as she’s called) drives for Highland, and Highland has been extremely supportive of Jo-Jo’s efforts over the years, even though she maintains her productivity as a working driver. The time and effort spent over and above her productivity is a huge commitment on her part. Virtually at every truck show event in Ontario, you’ll find Joanne every weekend during the truck show season. Her efforts have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the cause of the fight against breast cancer. There are many other cause-purposed truck events. Truckers are constantly the ones giving to their worthy causes and the causes for which they are giving are always appreciative of the funds so raised. The future of truck shows? If the past is any indicator, and it is, truck shows will be around for years to come. People in the industry need to have those face-to-face connections to bring them up-to-date on an industry that is so influx it’s almost impossible to keep up on a daily basis. Truck shows will evolve, of course, to meet those needs. New products, new concepts, new technology will all drive the need to find a target audience that is most difficult to reach on a one-onone level and truck shows provide that opportunity. In an industry where an employee can go months and never

speak, let alone see his or her immediate supervisor, truck shows are that venue to promote interpersonal relationships with the industry as a whole, and maybe that small opportunity to meet the person who signs the pay cheque. It is incumbent on the organizers of the truck shows to prove their worth, provide the venue, deliver the target audience and source those who have goods and services that meet the needs of the target audience and provide fair value for the money charged for the space in the venue. Some of the shows go above and beyond their simple mandate while others merely scrape by. Those that are merely scraping by will soon be out of the market place because people notice whether or not they’re being used or sold a bill of goods that doesn’t measure up. The major players: MATS, GATS (Great America Truck Show), Truck World/ExpoCam, APNA, and the Atlantic Province Truck Show are doing much more than simply required and are continuing to be successful because they are providing and constantly developing, changing with the new technologies coming on the market. It’s truly a tough row to hoe when a business tries to get several opposing part of the supply chain together to complement each other, introducing matching employers with employees is another specialized venue for trucking events. This human resources function has been included into the truck show milieu. Events that bring people together in ways that are meaningful to all sides of the equation for all purposes is what is going to have the truck show a vibrant part of trucking life for all those on the operations side, the supply of goods and services side, the human resources side, the social aspects side, even those where the lines are blurred, then all will be well and continue for decades to come.

reusable insulated cup can save a lot of money too. A lot of work spaces offer free coffee to employees as well, so take advantage of it and stop your $15/day coffee shop habit. That alone can be $450 a month! You say you can’t save? YES you CAN !. I recently saw an application for a girl in her early 20’s who wanted to buy a brand new Mazerati. The car was over $130,000 and her income was less than $20,000. After I stopped laughing at the application, it was approved with a co-signer and a huge down payment. We were

the only place to even approve the deal after multiple declines. We know there is NO WAY she can afford the down payment, the monthly payments, the insurance and maintenance on that car. Yet the girl thinks she’s entitled to have this car. What makes people think they are entitled and can afford things they clearly cannot?? I was dealing with a client who turns 50 years old this year. His truck was being paid off after 4 years. He used to own a home and now lives on rent and his wife does not work. They have no children. You would think he has a large bank balance, but think again. He has zero money. We issued him a refund cheque for a security deposit that was only $1,000 and mailed it to him along with the paperwork to transfer the truck to his name. He was given the option to pick up the cheque but he claimed he was too busy and requested it be mailed. Every day he calls asking about his money. He is so desperate for $1,000 that it has gotten to the point of harassment. He is calling several times a day. I asked him where his other money is. I asked where the money from the home he sold is. I asked why he doesn’t have life insurance and who he expects to take care of his wife since he doesn’t plan to and how will he retire with no money? He got angry and said I was rude. I countered and said it was rude to call every single day, several times a day for such a small cheque which has been mailed because he was too busy to pick it up. He said he quit his job and was no longer working. I said normal people first find a new job and THEN quit the old job. I said he is not responsible and had poor money management skills. I said this is a FACT and call it rude, but it is a FACT. No one who is almost 50 years old should be so desperate for such a small amount of money and 16

have an empty bank account and have no job BY CHOICE. And what was he doing that he was too busy to pick up his cheque in the first place since he had no job? I cannot help everybody, but I hope people can learn from these real life examples. You need to save money and cut spending. Do you plan to leave your debt to your family and loved one’s? Do you plan to have them also pay for your funeral with no money and beg other relatives if they can live with them because they were not taken care of and have an empty bank account? Will these people go on government assistance? Who will look after them? Ask yourself, what if I’m not around tomorrow, what will happen to my family? There are people who are irresponsible, and I don’t think anything you say or do can teach them to become responsible. Advisors are taught to dispose quickly of the irresponsible as time wasters who will never learn. I just feel bad for the people these time wasters affect. If you feel you are in this situation and are worried about being left alone with other people’s debt and burden, I encourage you to seek a financial advisor’s help and make sure you are taken care of. Become selfish. If your loved one is selfish and doesn’t care about you, you can also be selfish and look out for yourself.

Navistar Introduces New Regional Haul Class 8

N

avistar introduced a new regional haul Class 8 tractor this week: the International RH Series, which will be spec’d with the OEM’s new 12.4-litre A26 engine as its standard power plant. “The new International RH Series continues our commitment to build trucks that lead the industry in uptime,” said Bill Kozek, president of truck and parts for Navistar, in a statement. “We are confident this truck will continue to build on our momentum and be successful in the regional haul market.” He added that Navistar is now taking orders for this new truck, with plans to begin production in early June. New features on the RH Series include: • Multiple cab configurations, including day cab, 56-in. low roof sleeper, 56-in. hi-rise sleeper, day cab with roof fairing, and 56-in. hi-rise sleeper with roof fairing. • The Bendix Wingman Advanced Collision Mitigation system as standard equipment. • An inside wheel cut of up to 50 degrees delivering a curb-tocurb turning radius of just 27-ft. 10-in. for better maneuverability in tight city streets or cramped loading docks. • Aerodynamic improvements, reduced weight, and driveline enhancements make the RH Series up to 6% more fuel-efficient versus previous regional haul models. • Those aerodynamic improvements also yielded a four-Sone decrease in wind noise for improved driver comfort. • Ergonomically designed service points under the hood and around the chassis for easier and safer access, with many components engineered with longer intervals between required maintenance. • Cab wiring with all-new harnesses connected to an in-cab

power distribution module that is located inside the truck for more protection from the elements. • A new dashboard display that offers up to 15 customizable digital gauges, with the air horn relocated back to its traditional “intuitive” position over the driver door. • A new single-canister after-treatment system that is 60% smaller, 40% lighter, and simplified for quicker servicing. Navistar added that drivers will benefit from the redesigned side windows and mirrors on the RH Series, which provide enhanced side visibility. The OEM also noted that it developed the interior of the RH Series based a study of interaction points between the driver and truck – everything from what a driver sees to how he moves and reacts in virtually any situation. That resulted in design features such as a large swept-back windshield, more optimized mirror placement, plus an aerodynamic sloped hood for a clearer view. “We drew upon the expertise of drivers to ensure that the RH Series is the most driver-centric Class 8 regional haul vehicle we’ve ever built,” explained Denny Mooney, senior vice president for global product development at Navistar, in a statement. “Many of our customers tell us that their number-one challenge is attracting and retaining drivers, which is why we put so much effort into understanding and responding to drivers’ needs,” he pointed out. “These improvements also contribute to increased driver ease of use that will boost the vehicle’s productivity.”

CVSA Roadcheck Planned for June 6-8

I

26

MAY - JUNE 2017

nternational Roadcheck is an annual three-day event when CVSA-certified inspectors conduct compliance, enforcement and educational initiatives targeted at various elements of motor carrier, vehicle and driver safety. This year’s International Roadcheck needs to be on the trucking industry’s calendar for June 6-8, 2017. The

and inspectors will be checking drivers for seat belt usage and the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The vehicle inspection includes checking items such as the brake systems, cargo securement, coupling devices, driveline/driveshaft, exhaust systems, frames, fuel systems, lighting devices (required lamps), steering mechanisms,

Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s 72-hour safety blitz is in its 30th year in 2017. It is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world with nearly 17 trucks or buses inspected, on average, every minute across North America during a 72-hour period. Each year, International Roadcheck places special emphasis on a category of violations. This year’s focus is cargo securement. While checking for compliance with safe cargo securement regulations is always part of roadside inspections, CVSA is highlighting cargo securement safety this year as a reminder of its importance to highway safety. Inspectors will primarily be conducting the North American Standard Level I Inspection, which is the most thorough roadside inspection. It is a 37-step procedure that includes an examination of both driver operating requirements and vehicle mechanical fitness. Drivers are required to provide items such as their driver’s license, hours-ofservice documentation, motor carrier registration and shipping documentation,

suspensions, tires, van and open-top trailer bodies, wheels, rims and hubs, windshield wipers and emergency exits (on buses). Since its inception in 1988, roadside inspections conducted during International Roadcheck have numbered more than 1.4 million. Roadcheck also provides an opportunity to educate industry and the general public about the importance of safe commercial vehicle operations and the roadside inspection program. CVSA sponsors International Roadcheck with participation by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada, and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (Mexico). In past years, jurisdictions in the U.S. and Canada have actively participated in the program and publicized the number of inspections and out-of-service orders. There haven’t been any hard numbers out of Mexico in recent years.

TWNA Technical Achievement Award Winner Cummins X15 Engine

T

he Truck Writers of North America’s 2016 Technical Achievement Award has been decided, and the winner is the Cummins X15 Efficiency Series diesel engine. The 14.9-liter diesel gains 3 percent in fuel efficiency over the preceding model, the ISX15, through improvements to air-handling, combustion efficiency, reduced parasitic losses and advanced electronics, according to a Cummins news release. Maintenance should cost 40 percent less than previous engines over five years. The ISX15 was redesigned to meet 2017 federal greenhouse gas and fuel economy requirements, and two models called X15 Performance and X15 Efficiency were introduced. To be nominated for the award, products must show technical innovation, have a wide applicability and availability in trucking, and offer significant operating benefits. The other four finalists were Accuride’s EverSteel wheel with a special

anti-corrosion treatment; the Mack and Volvo “wave” piston, part of engine upgrades to comply with new greenhouse gas and fuel economy regulations; SAF-Holland’s P89 disc brake, a high-performance, lightweight and moderate-cost braking product; and Volvo’s iSee and Mack’s Predictive cruise control, which “learns” routes and operates a truck’s powertrain to gain maximum efficiency. Life Insurance and Knowing Your Agent Pash Brar

W

hen anyone mentions the topic of life insurance, people try to change the topic, avoid eye contact and try anything they can to avoid discussing it. It is very serious, and it is also uncomfortable to discuss. The problem is, it NEEDS to be talked about at some point. This makes choosing your life insurance agent very important. You must feel comfortable with discussing personal topics with them, and be confident in their knowledge. I decided to get my life insurance license because I personally know a top agent who broke records worldwide selling insurance.

The only problem was that she lied to all her clients. She told them lies such as the policy would be paid in 12 years, and now over 30+ years later none of her thousands of clients has a policy that was paid. She lied and now lost her license, but not before she made millions of dollars lying to innocent people. I want this behaviour to stop. I joined the industry to help protect people from the over abundance of dishonest and uneducated agents. 28

MAY - JUNE 2017

Unfortunately the requirement to obtain a license to sell life insurance is a course that can take as little as a few weeks to complete. This depends on how much time the person has to study. Due to this, the industry is overrun with people who want a quick career. These are people that are pursuing the industry for quick money, instead of actually wanting to help people. They will say and do anything for a quick sale, often at the cost of the client who may unknowingly not be properly insured. I always offer a free review of clients existing policies. In EVERY single review that I have done, I have found an error done by their previous agent. I have found occupations that are incorrectly input, so the client actually has zero disability insurance coverage. They have been paying for years, for nothing. They are paying for a product that doesn’t cover them. The client correctly told the agent their occupation and it was the AGENT that input it incorrectly causing zero coverage. I have found price changes that were also not declared. Policies that go up in price and will become unaffordable by retirement are not told to the client. People are completely unaware because they were NOT told by the agent and cannot read the policy and understand it. The agent that lies and says a universal life insurance policy that contains an investment component, will be paid in 20 years is still a lie being used today. I found one just last week. For that type of policy to pay off, it must earn on average 10.5-11.5% each and EVERY single for 20 years in a row, then remove the 2.5% management fees of the portfolio, and THEN the policy has a possibility of paying off in 20 years. Apparently these agents know more than Warren Buffet and Berkshire Hathaway because that is IMPOSSIBLE to do, and is a LIE. There are NO mutual funds that perform at that level each and every year. Being underinsured is also a big problem when I do reviews. Mortgage balances and young children are not accounted for, so if something happens to the family bread winner there will be a huge problem. The mortgage may not pay off, so the family has

to now move and rent, and worse the children may not be able to afford the education and weddings of their dreams. This is all because your agent did not take the time to explain the deficiency. I advised one couple of the lack of insurance and they then called the agent to confront her who had done the bad job. The agent was so desperate that she begged the couple to not buy the corrected policy from me, but buy it from her because she is a widow and needs money. That is pathetic and unethical. This also shows that even her own family was ill insured and she is grossly unqualified. If she was doing her job properly her husband would have been heavily insured by her at the time of his death, but instead she begs for money. Do you want advice from someone who didn’t prepare herself and now has no money but thinks she can advise others on money? These are the type of agents in the field. To be an advisor of any kind, you need superior knowledge. This is a knowledge that gives you the ability to aid others on the topic on which you have expertise. Does a few week course give people that knowledge? I was talking to a friend about this situation and he said, “If you’re sick, do you want the top doctor who worked

hard to be a top student, went to a top college, and works for a top hospital to do your surgery or do you want the person who got just by in school, was an average student and rejected by the local colleges and universities for poor grades and went to the Caribbean to get a medical degree?” The same goes for your insurance agent. Find one who went to a reputable UNIVERSITY, has life experience, and has qualifications beyond just the few week course. Don’t choose the mediocre, choose the BEST. I encourage you all to ask your agent of all their qualifications and carefully choose the right agent who will do a proper job. I really wish they would add a minimum bachelor’s degree from a qualified university component to the life insurance qualification. This would eliminate a lot of the bad agents and do so very rapidly. Remember, this agent holds the lives of your family in their hands, and they better be qualified to do so. So when you encounter an agent, ask them about their qualifications. If you do not feel they are qualified to handle you and your loved one’s, then find one who can.

Clearing Up A Major Misconception About Heavy-Duty Oil Filtration Zafar Hussain Senior Product Engineer at Luber-finer

E

veryone in the Canadian trucking industry knows that the true test of any heavy-duty vehicle is its ability to perform under extreme conditions. The same goes for Luber-finer full flow oil filters, which are engineered for minimal restriction of oil so they can perform as optimally as possible in cold weather, or when oil has become viscous due to extended service.

So why aren’t more Canadian fleets using them? In recent years, confusing manufacturer warranty language and a misrepresentation of recently developed filter technologies have created a major misconception about heavy-duty oil filtration. Many fleet, maintenance and parts managers falsely believe they must use combination filters that utilize both bypass media and venturi technology or risk voiding their engine’s warranty. This misconception has prevented many of them from achieving the highest levels of oil filter capacity and efficiency by using full flow filters with more media area compared to competitors’ combination filters. At Luber-finer, we’re committed to helping Canadian fleet, maintenance and parts managers maximize the performance of their vehicles. So, let me put the misconception to rest. When used in accordance with OEM warranty prescribed replacement intervals, Luber-finer full flow oil filters will not void original equipment warranty requirements. - Zafar Hussain Zafar is a Senior Product Engineer at Luber-finer, one of the world’s most trusted filter brands. He has worked in the filtration industry since 2002 and has multiple patents under his name, including Luber-finer’s Heavy-Duty Time Release Technology (TRT™) Oil Filter.

34

MAY - JUNE 2017

You can count on Luber-finer to provide trustworthy full flow filtration for your Cummins, Mack, Volvo, Detroit Diesel, Caterpillar or Paccar International engine. Remember, the true purpose of an oil filter is to remove particulate and contaminants that are detrimental to an engine. That’s why an oil filter should only be judged on three metrics: efficiency, capacity and restriction. Luber-finer full flow technology has been proven to outperform competitive combination bypass filters in all three areas. As evaluated in the Cummins ISX engine using ISO 4548-12 in-house testing vs. competitive filters, the Luber-finer LFP9001 full flow oil filter: • Is 100% more efficient at removing particulate at 5 microns • Offers 31% more particulate capacity • Shows 8% less restriction on an engine’s oil flow at a 25 gallons-per-minute flow rate under harsh test conditions All heavy-duty filters and their parts are tested in the lab following SAE and ISO standards before they are launched. They are manufactured in production facilities which are ISO 9001, TS16949 and ISO 14001 certified for quality and environment. Don’t sacrifice the performance that matters most based on misleading warranty language or the claims of some of our competitors. Choose Luberfiner’s expertly engineered full flow oil filters to get the most out of your heavy-duty engines – especially during brutal Canadian winters. You can download a brochure at http://www. luber-finer.com/full-flow to learn more about our full flow oil filters for heavy-duty engines. You can also visit the Luber-finer booth at the APNA Truck Show on June 10-11, 2017 at the Tradex Centre in Abbotsford, BC. I’ll be there to personally answer your questions. I look forward to meeting and supporting all the hard-working fleet managers, parts managers, maintenance managers and technicians who keep trucks moving in Canada!

Peterbilt Adds Collision Mitigation Standard

P

eterbilt Motor Co. plans to make the Bendix Wingman Advanced collision mitigation safety system a standard feature on its Model 579 highway tractor starting July 1.

A radar-based collision mitigation system aimed specifically at reducing rear-end collisions, Wingman Advanced also offers adaptive cruise control with braking as well as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), Bendix noted. The Wingman system us based on the Bendix Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Peterbilt has offered as a standard feature on most of its Class 8 tractors – including the Model 579 – since 2012. Wingman Advanced has been an option on its entire range of on-highway truck models for the same period, Bendix noted. “The pairing of our most sophisticated truck with Bendix’s cutting-edge active safety systems has proven popular with fleets and drivers over the past five years, so making Wingman Advanced standard on the Model 579 makes perfect sense from our perspective,” noted Robert Woodall, Peterbilt’s assistant general manager of sales and marketing, in a statement. “Like the team at Bendix, Peterbilt is always working toward safer trucks and safer highways, and is dedicated to embracing technologies that have been road-tested and shown to make a positive, measurable impact,” he added. In addition to Wingman Advanced and ESP, Peterbilt also offers

Bendix’s “flagship” driver assistance system, Wingman Fusion, on both the Model 579 and the vocational Model 567. Bendix's SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) has also been available as a factory-installed option on Peterbilt Class 8 tractors since 2014, and the Bendix ADB22X air disc brake has been standard equipment on Peterbilt Class 8 steer axles since 2012, noted Scott Burkhart, Bendix’s vice president of sales, marketing, and business development, in a statement. “We’re excited to keep strengthening the relationship that Bendix technologies and the Peterbilt 579 have had since this trailblazing truck was launched in 2012,” he said. “As a trucking industry safety leader, Peterbilt has always set high bars for safety, reliability, quality, and performance in its vehicles. The 579 is no exception, and Wingman Advanced in standard position will help Peterbilt continue to reach and exceed those goals.”

Nielsen Replaces Daum at DTNA

R

oger Nielsen will be taking the reins at Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) as president and CEO effective April 1 this year, replacing Martin Daum who moved up to become a member of the board of management and head of Daimler Trucks and Buses at DTNA’s parent company, Germany’s Daimler AG, back on March 1. Nielsen, 56, will also oversee DTNA’s affiliated companies, which includes Freightliner Trucks, Western Star Trucks, Thomas Built Buses, Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. (FCCC) and Detroit Diesel Corp. “Roger Nielsen brings a rock solid product, manufacturing and sales

background to this position paired with a razorsharp focus on technology, quality and customer service,” Daum said in a statement. “He has an excellent track record as an influential leader in the industry.” Nielsen joined DTNA – then named Freightliner Corp. – back in 1986 as an industrial engineer and since then has held various positions for the company both in the U.S. and abroad at Daimler’s commercial vehicles divisions in Germany. For the last 16 years, he’s served as DTNA’s chief operating officer.

Heavier loading Does Not Increase Shipping Rates

Feel the Open Road at TRANSAM

T

he trucking industry is facing an interesting dilemma, significant increases in loads being shipped are not leading to increased shipping rates. A quick look at some of the shipping reports would seem to indicate things are trending positively. For example, imports in Los Angeles and Long Beach are up 26% over last year, loads available on the spot truckload market were up 46% over the prior month and 92% when compared to the same month last year. So why are prices soft? Why are some of the largest trucking companies in the country reporting decreased earnings or preparing investors for lower than expected profits? The answer is fairly simple. First, the increased tonnage available to ship has not made much of a dent in the nation’s shipping capacity. Furthermore, some of the larger players seem to be attempting to capture additional market share by keeping shipping rates depressed. So while increased shipping numbers are a cause for cautious optimism, it is still too early to declare an end to the recession of the past few years.

Preparing for the Switch to ELD December 18, 2017 18 dsMbr 2017 qoN ho rhI hY

iqAwrI ELD l`gx dI G. Ray Gompf

I

n late 2015, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration released the final rule for using electronic logging devices sparking a dearth of ELD development and competing companies trying to curry favour. Dozens of vendors, some of them only recently discovering the existence of trucking, offer hardware and software options designed to provide trucking carriers with compliance with existing hours of service regulations. However, FMCSA has delayed implementation due to its inability to interface electronically with any and all of these road-side data-transfer systems. FMCSA expects to have the bugs worked out and will be ready to go live December 18th, 2017 when it has scheduled enforcement to begin using electronic logs. There will of course be a disconnect between what fleet-focused onboard devices offer with all their bells and whistles versus what the small business owner operator truckers will opt to employ. Of course, even those opting for baseline-compliance devices could benefit from additional functions such as IFTA data collection, making mileage tracking automatic and easily reportable. Those small business owner operator carriers with one to ten trucks, even those poised to go beyond the magic ten, can benefit from simplified dispatch tools particularly those tools that can also bring the load information alerts, even the routings. to the truck. Small business owner operators contemplating various offerings should consider these issues: Support: The final rule specifies an eight-day timeframe for repairing/replacing a malfunctioning ELD. Does the provider stock the kind of hardware inventory to meet such a quick turnaround? How are replacements/repairs handled? For carriers needing more than eight days to replace any ELD, the rule also spelled out a process for requesting more time that involves contacting local jurisdiction FMCSA division office to justify the need for more time. FMCSA registry and compliance: Technically, compliant ELDs must be on FMCSA’s registry of devices. The FMCSA vetting process does not ensure testing for compliance, relying largely on manufacturers to self-certify that they meet the rule specifications prompted worry among motor carriers about what 38

happens if their device is later found to be noncompliant. The FMCSA website addresses that scenario: “FMCSA will work with affected motor carriers to establish a reasonable timeframe for replacing non-compliant devices.” At this stage, part of the complexity involving the registry is that automatic onboard recording devices (AOBRD) meeting fairly minimal requirements compared to ELD specs are essentially grandfathered through Dec. 16, 2019. The rule notes that any carrier installing an AOBRD prior to 2017 ELD enforcement date can use that device until the 2019 date. Essentially, this means FMCSA is enforcing the requirement to use a registry-listed device is unlikely before that time, particularly for carriers who comply with the ELD rule and install an engine-connected e-log prior to Dec. 18, 2017 minimizing the importance for carriers to choose a registry-listed device. It is suggested upon consideration of any product not listed on the registry demand of the vendor disclosure of its plans for registered its device and whether or not it has plans for support and success of its product beyond 2019. For owner-operators, perhaps the biggest exemption to FMCSA’s ELD requirement is the exclusion of 1999 and older model year trucks from complying. Other exemptions exist for the following: Drivers in drive-away/tow-away operations, where the vehicle being driven is the commodity being delivered. Drivers operating under the timecard exception to the hours recording rules – the 100- and 150-air-mile radius short-haul exceptions – exclusively. Drivers who occasionally keep a log book but do not do so for more than eight days in any 30-day period.

Volvo Previews VNR Regional Haul Model

V

olvo Trucks North America offered a glimpse of the shape of trucks to come with two preview videos for its new Volvo VNR regional haul model. “The VNR is wholly reimagined inside and out. It melds a modern, connected workspace inside the cab with bold exterior lines and optimized dimensions for maximum efficiency. This is a truck built to deliver the versatility our customers need to face the challenges of the rapidly evolving North American freight network” said Göran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “We expect that the VNR’s bold, dynamic appearance will change antiquated perceptions of what trucks should look like.” To gauge impressions of the VNR’s streamlined exterior styling, Volvo Trucks mentioned it recently offered a sneak peek to a few people—none of whom are actors, most with no connection to the trucking industry—and filmed their reactions. Volvo Trucks noted it has been adopting automotive features to help make driving freight vehicles easier and created a stateof-the-art driving environment to help attract more drivers to the industry. New features include a proprietary steering Evaporator wheel that tilts like a car’s—the first and only one in the industry—more ergonomic Evaporator seats, an advanced infotainment system and a new instrument cluster with many new functions in the driver information display. An updated version of the Volvo I-Shift automated manual transmission and Volvo’s I-See predictive cruise control that memorizes road topography help shift more efficiently. Enhanced passive safety features and Volvo Active Driver Assist makes the new Volvo VNR the safest Volvo ever, according to the company. Designed and engineered expressly for regional haul applications, the new Volvo VNR was developed to be adapted to bulk transport, flatbed, liquid tankers, port drayage, and other urban pickup and delivery operations. “Volvo as a brand has always been innovative. We’re always driving progress,” said Nyberg. “Especially in this new Volvo VNR, we wanted to apply technology to meet specific needs articulated by our customers. We’re giving them a better tool to apply to the complexities of their regional haul applications.”

The new Volvo VNR made its public debut on April 20th, 2017 at ExpoCam in Montreal.

Encouraging Women to Enter the Canadian Trucking Industry Shelley Uvanille-Hesch wants to see more women working in the trucking industry, but she knows it won’t happen without those who are already there lending a hand. That’s why in 2014 she founded the Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada, which recruits and mentors women in a profession that is overwhelmingly male. The group estimates that only 3 percent of Canadian truck drivers are women. The federation has about 50 members, including men, and a handful of corporate sponsors, including the Highway Western Star dealership in Ontario. The group includes professionals who hold non-driving jobs in the trucking industry, such as dispatchers, managers and parts technicians. “We really want to encourage more women into the industry. It’s a good job and there is a definite need for more truckers,” she said. “It’s a man’s world, but it’s coming around.”

Uvanille-Hesch worked her way up to the cab of a big truck without the benefit of an organization like Women’s Trucking Federation. The daughter of a truck driver, she knew from a young age she wanted to drive as well: “I always had the bug, but I wanted to be home with my kids.” She compensated by driving a school bus; once her children were grown, she graduated to a motor coach, then a straight truck, and has been driving a Class 8 truck for 17 years. For the past 13 years, she’s driven for Sharp Transportation, a pharmaceuticals carrier based in Cambridge, Ont., that serves Canada and most of the United States. Her regular runs include Georgia, Florida, Texas and California. As a senior driver at Sharp, Uvanille-Hesch drives a 2016 Western Star 5700XE she’s named “Destiny Star.” “I love it. There is so much room and it’s a smooth ride,” she said. “I’m only 4’ 11”, but I can see over the hood and I can actually see out of the hood mirrors into my blind spots.” 42

MAY - JUNE 2017

A solo driver for a long time, she now teams with her husband, Chris, who earned his CDL so he could join her on the road. “There is a lot of interior room for a team. I really like the bigger refrigerator and its location. It’s literally a home away from home,” she said. She also praised Detroit™ Virtual Technician™, which comes standard on the 5700XE. The integrated remote diagnostic system records critical vehicle performance data immediately before, during and after a fault occurs. Within minutes, Virtual Technician gives drivers and fleets a preliminary diagnosis, recommendations and, if needed, directions to nearby service locations with the available parts. “I highly recommend Virtual Technician,” she said. “It’s nice to know exactly what the codes mean, if I need to park immediately, need a tow truck or if it’s safe to get to a dealership.” She also likes the attention the Western Star attracts: “It doesn’t matter where we go, people are always taking pictures of my ride and asking questions about her, even when I’m fueling. Quite often, I pop the hood so they can look at the engine.” She’s put 191,000 miles on “Destiny Star” in her first year, and she appreciates it more than ever. “It’s my first Western Star, but I wouldn’t want to drive anything else,” she said. When her husband is behind the wheel, Uvanille-Hesch stays busy with the Women’s Trucking Federation, which is active on a number of fronts, from mentoring women in driving school and hosting career events at high schools to giving interviews to polish the public image of truckers. The federation also is involved in a number of charitable causes and appears at industry events to gain visibility and recruit women drivers. Women truckers can do a lot to encourage newer drivers by mentoring them and becoming fleet and school trainers, she said: “They’ll get a wealth of knowledge from all angles.”

Trailer Orders Down but Up

F

TR Transportation Intelligence reports final March net trailer orders at 20,500 units, down 20% from February but up 50% versus a year ago. The drop off from February for both dry and refrigerated vans is simply due to the start of a typical seasonal decline in trailer orders, and the strong year over year comparison reflecting a positive trailer order environment. Softening backlogs are also consistent with normal market conditions and production for March was robust. Trailer orders have now totaled 246,000 units for the last twelve months. Don Ake, FTR Vice President of Commercial Vehicles, commented, “The trailer market had a great production month. The OEMs finally started to increase build rates due to the strong orders of the past four months. Builds jumped an impressive 9% on a per day level over February. Production was basically equal to last March, which is a great sign moving into the seasonally strong second quarter.” “The additional good news is the trailer vocational segments are showing some signs of life. Flatbed production was up considerably, as were dump trailers. The tanker segments are also moving in the right direction. These vocational segments continue to track closely with Class 8 trucks, which are also on the upswing. Fleets are growing much more optimistic about the business environment and they are buying more trailers again after a slump the second half of last year.”

Mack Names Richard Hoyle VP National Accounts

M

ack Trucks has named Richard (Rick) Hoyle as vice president of national accounts. Hoyle will be responsible for all National Accounts activities in North America, as well as leading efforts to grow this segment of Mack’s business, the company noted. “Having served in numerous positions in the trucking industry from operator to executive-level roles, Rick brings a wealth of experience,” said Jonathan Randall, senior vice president of sales, Mack Trucks North America. “We welcome Rick to our team and look forward to his contributions.” Prior to joining Mack, Hoyle served in a variety of senior leadership positions for a leading bulk transportation and logistics company. Hoyle also owned and operated a bulk haul business for 16 years.
