HEOP Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program HEOP, the Higher Education Opportunity Program, allows eligible New York State residents the opportunity to pursue higher education, despite academic vulnerabilities and limited financial resources. HEOP, funded in part by the State of New York, serves promising students, preparing them to succeed at the college level and beyond. HEOP offers a wide array of academic, financial, and personal support services in order to help participants transition to college and thrive. Beginning with a required pre-freshman year HEOP summer enrichment program, the College engages students in a dynamic learning community. During their first year, participants complete a structured program of study, allowing them to develop critically important skills and strong relationships with peers, faculty, and advisors. After the first year, participants pursue their chosen majors, but remain actively involved in HEOP through academic, social, cultural, and career development initiatives.

Eligibility & Application Students seek admission to the College as HEOP participants. Applicants should submit the College’s general application, as well as the supplemental HEOP materials and the FAFSA to verify eligibility. To be eligible for HEOP, applicants must complete an interview and meet specific economic eligibility requirements. heop@mountsaintvincent.edu 3

TRIO Student Support Services Program Maybe you’re the first member of your family to attend college—or maybe you need a hand adjusting to college life. The TRIO Student Support Services program assists first-generation college students, those from households with low-incomes, and/or students with disabilities. TRIO aids students with academic assistance, career education, counseling, leadership development, and cultural awareness activities. The program also offers grants to first- and second-year participants.

Eligibility & Application Students can apply to participate in TRIO after being accepted and submitting their deposit to the College. A supplemental application is required, and FAFSA information must be submitted to verify eligibility. trio@mountsaintvincent.edu

The TRIO program begins with a summer enrichment project that introduces first-year students to the challenges of college and allows upperclassmen to cultivate leadership skills as peer leaders and mentors. Throughout the academic year, students engage in academic and career development initiatives, and activities designed to facilitate service and cultural awareness.

Since graduating in May 2015 with a B.A. in communication and a minor in business, Ciara has launched a career in marketing. She works with clients to engage consumers and leverage social media.

Ciara Rosa ’15 achieved a great deal during her time at the Mount. While maintaining a grade point average deserving of Dean’s List honors, she represented her class in the Student Government Association for three years, including her role as senior class president. Ciara also led outreach efforts to homeless individuals in Manhattan as a participant in the Seton Service and Leadership Program. In March 2015, Ciara was recognized by the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities as one of 10 students across New York State for her leadership and commitment to community service. Additionally, Ciara worked as a peer tutor in the College’s Academic Resource Center (ARC) and completed an internship at a nationally syndicated television program.

Ciara credits many of her accomplishments at the Mount to her participation in the TRIO program. According to Ciara, TRIO provided “a place to go when I had a problem.” TRIO facilitated her entry to a myriad of other opportunities, including student government and her job in the ARC. Funded in part by the U.S. Department of Education, TRIO serves students, such as Ciara, who are among the first generation of their families to attend college, as well as students from low-income backgrounds and ones who have been diagnosed with a disability. For Ciara, her TRIO experience began with a pre-freshman summer program, which provided friends and a peer support network, as well as professional and faculty advisors that continue to support her today. Participating in TRIO taught Ciara that success is facilitated by “who you know and what you ask.” During the other three summers of her college experience, Ciara served as a peer leader for the TRIO program, helping younger students settle into life at the College. She says the experience was a “rewarding, fun, and memorable” one. 5

MAP Mount Access Program MAP, the Mount Access Program, is designed for students who demonstrate the potential and motivation to succeed in college, but whose test scores and high school records are below normal admission requirements. The program provides higher educational opportunities to students who might not otherwise continue their education.

Eligibility & Application Students eligible for MAP are identified through the College’s general admission application. Students admitted into MAP are chosen not only for what they may expect to gain from their time here, but also for what they can contribute to the Mount community. map@mountsaintvincent.edu 6

Students enrolled through MAP participate in a pre-freshman year academic enrichment program and are placed in developmental learning cohorts during the freshman year. Learning cohorts facilitate a student’s transition to college study, providing an established support network. Students complete 10 credits in the learning cohort in the fall semester, along with three credits outside the cohort. During the spring semester, students complete six credits in their learning cohort, along with six outside the cohort. By the start of the second year of study, MAP students are prepared to successfully pursue a full academic program in any of the College’s majors. Students who complete the freshman MAP program in good academic standing are awarded a three credit course scholarship, to be used at any point during the undergraduate program.

ACADEMIC & PROFESSIONAL RESOURCES In addition to our three distinctive programs, the College offers numerous resources and opportunities for students to achieve success. The Academic Resource Center, known on campus as the ARC, provides comprehensive tutorial services for all areas of study to students who require assistance. Individual tutoring sessions and study groups are available and are free of charge. The Writing Center, based in the ARC, covers just about anything related to writing—from workshops on grammar and sentence structure, to assistance with essay writing and thesis development. The ARC also provides academic study skills support to address areas such as time management, test anxiety, and test taking strategies. The tutoring staff includes both experienced professionals and trained peer tutors, and scheduling is always flexible. The nationally recognized Oxley Career Education Program helps students appreciate their strengths and interests, understand the value and range of opportunities associated with their strengths, and strategize how to translate what they love into a meaningful career. The Oxley Career Education Program benefits students by allowing them to identify their professional options and cultivate the skills and expertise necessary to excel. The Center for Undergraduate Research sponsors and assists students developing original research and scholarship. The Center is interdisciplinary, and allows students to learn qualitative and scientific methods along the entire spectrum, from conception to measurement to analysis. Student work is driven by individual ideas and passions and held up for public inspection at national and international conferences.
