Cianbro’s Summer Interns Showcase Their Skills and Ambition

By Dan Coffey

This past summer, Cianbro had the pleasure of welcoming 31 talented college interns into our organization for the 2021 season. The interns represented 14 schools throughout the United States from a variety of majors, including but not limited to construction management, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, safety, ecology and environmental science, accounting, and business management.

These ambitious team members came to Cianbro seeking on-the-job experience and an opportunity to apply the knowledge they gained in the classroom to real-world scenarios. During their orientation, Cianbro team members explained to the group that “you’ll get out of this experience what you put into it.” The interns did not disappoint, jumping in with both feet and quickly earning the trust of their supervisors. As a result, they were given some pretty significant responsibilities, including:

• Assisting with daily activity plans

• Marking up project drawings

• Developing work packets

• Establishing daily and weekly goals and tracking productivity

• Surveying

• Completing project environmental reports

• Managing subcontractors

• Creating RFIs

• Performing safety inspections

• Helping estimate jobs

At the end of each summer, the interns come together to deliver a presentation on their experiences, including an overview of their responsibilities, what they enjoyed most, their biggest takeaways, and more. Those in the room observing their report-outs could not have been more proud of what they witnessed. When describing their biggest takeaways, the interns consistently echoed Cianbro’s values and culture in which we all take pride, such as:

• “At Cianbro, it really is all about people.”

• “Safety is paramount.”

• “If you were willing to learn, there was always someone willing to teach you.”

• “My goals and interests mattered.”

• “I was welcomed into a family environment.”

• “Everyone was there to work as a team.”

• “I wasn’t treated like just an intern. They valued the work I was able to put in place.”

This summer’s interns also had the opportunity to apply for The Cianbro Companies Internship Scholarship Program. This scholarship program was introduced for the first time this year, to recognize, reward, and retain interns who demonstrate outstanding academic performance and leadership. Cianbro is pleased to award seven interns with this scholarship to help support their education and future.

One thing’s for sure, it was exciting for our team members to see the next generation eager to learn and work, and we look forward to welcoming many of these interns back again next year!
