Location : Pretoria, RSA | Building Area : 5 850m² | Building Type : New Museum Period : July 2013 – August 2016

In order to create a living heritage monument that reflects women, I chose to design a building with a rounded, curved shape that ‘embraces’ the central public square and main sculpture.

In 2012 the Department of Sports, Art, Culture and Recreation brought together a group of 100 diverse women in a series of workshops to create a concept brief for the Women’s Living Heritage Monument. Creative workers, spiritual leaders and community activists shared ideas about how best the monument could memorialize the 1956 Women’s Anti-Pass March and provide a platform for people to engage with our complex, layered HERstory. They envisioned a space that would be vibrant and warm, a space that would encourage interaction and would be a place of healing and empowerment.

The successive ramps of the monument echoes, and provide a sense of journey out of the darkness of the lower ramps up to a gallery and temporary exhibition space full of natural light.

Using an ancient building technology called rammed earth, soils from the surrounding region were used to reflect traditional mud-structures and building methods. The use of this environmentally sustainable material on the direct Western Facades also improves the building’s thermal environment and creates natural insulation.

As its name suggests the Women’s Living Heritage Monument will be a welcoming and engaging space not a traditionally static cold stone monument. People passing by during their lunch hour will be able to find quiet in the memorial garden which remembers the victims of the ‘Wit Wolf’ massacre or relax next to the water feature and enjoy the healing qualities of abundant water. Within the monument building there is a multi-purpose hall for launching events and workshops; rooms which will house women’s organizations and others which can be used for training and sharing of skills as well as a retail outlet where women artists and crafters can sell their work. It will be a multifunctional centre of interactive experiences, learning and sharing.

GERMISTON STATION

Location : Germiston, RSA | Building Area : 20 185m² | Building Type : Feasibility Study & Masterplan Developmennt of the New Overhead Concourse Station & Station Precinct Design Period : April 2013 – November 2016

New Concourse Station as part of a larger Germiston R1.2 bil Multi-modal Station Masterplan & Intermodal Facility Design and Urban Intervention, incorporating the station into the Germiston Spatial Development Framework.

The design is based on Transit Oriented Design Principles with Mixed Use, High Density developments within close proximity to Public Transport Facilities.

The project included a new concourse station design, refurbishment of the existing Heritage station building, station forecourt design,revamping the existing informal retail, a new double storey shopping mall, new long distance bus terminal, new multi-level taxi rank integrated with new hotel, housing & multi-purpose buildings

TASKS: Lead design architect, technical coordinator and design manager. The masterplan design and all buildings were designed up to stage 2 – concept and partially designed stage 3. The taxi rank and intermodal facility was completed up to the end off stage 4 – Construction documentation.

Artistic impressions & concept sketches of the new stations & design standards

Multiple Railway Station Modernization projects including the design of 4 new overhead concourse stations and the upgrade of 7 existing railway stations. The project included new and existing station layout conceptual designs, spatial planning and optimization, commercial developments & intermodal integration within the station precinct.

The client contracted 4 different consultant teams and required each team to present a conceptual design standard on which to base all new station designs in the Modernisation project. Limindlela Station (previous slide and images on right) was chosen to be the flagship station on which all other stations in the National PRASA Modernisation project was to be modelled, both in layout and look & feel.

The brief involved designing an Administrative Complex and Canteen for the staff as part of the larger Manufacturing Facility spanning approximately 22 hectares.

I assisted the facility’s lead architect by developing the conceptual layout, the design aesthetic and designed detailing for the buildings.

Artistic Impression of the New and Existing Office Buildings

Extending a traditional Victorian terraced house which has been converted to an office building. The brief further required designing a contemporary office building to compliment but contrast the existing heritage house, while maximising the allowable FAR. TASKS: development of various concept feasibility studies, design of the building and floor plan layout, and preparing council submission documentation.

Contemporary upmarket new build scheme of 384 residential units with central clubhouse including a small function room, crèche, wine room, pool and tennis court. The development comprised of 5 building types with various combinations of 2 bed, 1 bed and bachelor units.

I took over the project shortly after the contract was awarded and construction had started. I was responsible for statutory approvals, site supervision, design and consultant coordination, subcontractor drawing coordination and approvals, quality inspections and project close-out.

Location : Secunda, RSA | Building Area : 440m² | Building Type : New 4 bedroom House Period : May 2011 – December 2011

This project entailed the design of a new contemporary style residential dwelling with very specific brief requirements. The living spaces had to be open plan, with specific user-required visual and use interconnectivity.

TASKS included the design from concept to construction documentation stage. The construction was handled remotely, due to the site location, and managed by the home owners.
