What a time to be a seedstock producer in the Angus Breed! The bull sales last spring by auction and private treaty surpassed everyone's expectations. The demand for Angus replacement females made for brisk sales as the national cow herd is rebuilt. This momentum has carried onto this fall with buyers willing to step up and pay a premium to add new genetics to their programs. there are more good years ahead and now is the time to be aggressive, not complacent. Once again consignors to the Masterpiece Sale have opened up their pens to make this a truly premium offering. As you study the book you will find rare and hard to find semen; semen breeder packs on bulls that will only be available to this event; exciting embryo lots that offer the best of programs proven matrons; bred heifers primed to impact the breed; exciting heifer calves ready to be great additions as brood cow or demand attention in the showring as well as your next possible herdsire. New and exciting this year is our Junior portion of the Masterpiece Sale. This portion was added to highlight our Canadian Junior Breeders and the outstanding job these young breeders are doing. Our annual scholarship ‘Donation Heifer’ fundraiser at Agribition in November is actually TWO BRED heifers - Canadian Lynn 18Y and Canadian Lynn 22Y. Both are donated by the CAA Staff as their outcome from the 2009 Foundation embryo lottery. Doug & Wendy Newton of Heart Bar Cattle Co. kindly donated the recipient dams for the staff’s three embryos and shepherded two live calves to weaning. From there, the Latimers of Remitall Farms took possession of the two heifer calves and have raised them ever since, including a top quality, exciting breeding to Remitall F Odyssey 67X. The CJAA have partnered with the Canadian Angus Foundation on the fundraiser this year and CJA and CAF board members are selling raffle tickets for 18Y and 22Y will be 'dutch' auctioned at the Masterpiece Sale at Agribition. Many thanks to the the CAA staff for the donation, the Newton’s for taking them to weaning and the Latimer family for looking after them for the past year and getting them bred. Make sure you get your tickets for these great heifers and help fund our scholarship program.

Here is a fancy correct heifer that will please!! Abacus Blackcap 14Z comes from the top of our heifer pen. We were reluctant to sell her, but Bob was persistent enough; we decided to let her go. Her sire SAV Brave 8320 is siring easy, keeping cattle in our herd; we have been pleased with the offspring. Your not going to find very many of his daughters for sale. 14Z's dam Happvale NJP Blackcap 31T has been leaving us showy calves that remain in the herd. 31T is a front pasture cow that is easy doing; calves at the front of the herd and weans a heavy, structurally correct calf year after year.

She was our choice that day and has went on to prove herself time and time again. She has a son working for T-K Ranch, a daughter retained (that raised one of our best heifer calves this year!), and her last years bull calf was in the Reserve Champion pen of bulls at Agribition and was sold to a good friend of ours last spring. This fall she has another good bull calf in the pen. Her sire Red Soo Line Zama Pine 82L was purchased as a two year old, along with a maternal brother, Red Soo Line Hercules 12M. Both these bulls have left an outstanding imprint on our herd, especially the females. It's no wonder. When dad came home that day from Soo Line, he said the Dam to these bulls, Red Lazy MC Christy 61J, was so good he had to own them both. Ardath has a great udder and disposition and her feet are perfect! This type of cow does not come around very often and the decision to sell her is a hard one.

This spring we had over 150 progeny by these two great bulls and those calves have been exceeding all our expectations. Both bulls stamp out their progeny very consistantly. The Bullets are long, fancy cattle with a lot of eye appeal. The Eliminators are a bit more moderate, and easy fleshing. We would like the pick chosen before the end of the year, but be prepared to come spend the day as we still cannot decide ourselves which is our best heifer. With that kind of group of daughters these two bulls have at Johnson Livestock, any one of them will work for their new owners.

I remember seeing Denver Reserve Champ Justamere Panama Jack over and over again as a yearling and loved him.
