“I couldn’t work because I was paralyzed, but I have gotten along pretty good,” he said. “I studied the stock market for many years. Six or seven years ago I decided to cash in everything I had in stocks.”

Thanks to Mr. Bruns, many children have been assisted by SSM Cardinal Glennon. A visible legacy of his contributions will open to children late this spring – the Robert P. Bruns Playground. It will be built on an outdoor patio adjacent to the hospital’s original entrance hallway. And, as Mr. Bruns would wish, it will be fully handicapped and wheelchair accessible.

He was riding in a jeep on a reconnaissance mission, inspecting roads and bridges, when the jeep rolled over and landed on him. His back was broken in two places. Mr. Bruns threw himself into his rehabilitation and vowed to live an active, independent life. He traveled, mastered woodworking and built impressive radio-controlled model airplanes. He also learned about the stock market.
“I am so pleased with my gift annuities, not only for the income I get but for the ultimate benefits to children.” Children’s charities were one of his top priorities, so he began placing charitable gift annuities with the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation.

His legacy will live on as the new Rally Squirrel playground will be named in his honor.
