2011 Last Whistle Dedication Mark Davenport #11264 Each summer The Last Whistle is dedicated to a man or woman who, over the course of their camp career, has improved upon this place that many of us would already refer to as “perfect.â€? This year I’m honored to present the dedication to someone who not only has improved the camp itself but nearly every camper and certainly every leader who has walked through the gates of Camp Dudley over the last decade. This man started his career by jumping right into leadership. He was a JL in 1972 paired up with leader Bill McCutcheon. Bill described him as a Ă€HUFH FRPSHWLWRU EXW HYHQ ZLWK KLV RYHUZKHOPLQJ desire to win, this dedication recipient still kept sportsmanship in mind. During the following VXPPHU KLV Ă€UVW DV D OHDGHU KH ZURWH LQ The Last Whistle, “Dudley wants you to become a good sport, not a super jock. We want to turn out an athlete that knows the meaning of sportsmanship.â€? Almost forty years later this mentality still applies. Sports were not his only passion; he was also hugely involved in Witherbee. Steve Wortimer told me, “Dudley became a much more musical and merry place when [he] arrived.â€? With trumpet in hand this man would play his college UXJE\ Ă€JKW VRQJV IRU WKH ER\V WR boost morale and energy. But he isn’t just a musician, he is also a talented actor and director.

4

Over the course of his Dudley career he has written and directed dozens of plays – most of which, in P\ H[SHULHQFH UHà HFW KLV KXPRU ORYH RI OLIH DQG passion for camp. In the year 2000 this man was given the extremely GLIÀFXOW FKDOOHQJH RI WDNLQJ RYHU IRU 'XGOH\ LFRQ Ink Clark as Leadership Director. Ink had worked side by side with Bob Marshall, Willie Schmidt, and Wheaton Griffon. He was omnipresent at camp but never the focus. Whoever was going to take over this job was going to have enormous shoes to ÀOO %XW RXU GHGLFDWLRQ UHFLSLHQW VWHSSHG XS WR WKH challenge and then some. Publicly many of you know him for his plays, his costumes on the Fourth of July, his trumpet playing, or maybe his Hip Hop Abs. But behind the scenes, he is responsible for knowing the details about every member of every leadership team here at camp. He uses this information to help groom the excellent group of leaders you see sitting around

2011 Last Whistle Dedication you summer after summer. He is endlessly loyal to this camp and his passion for it is greater than that of anyone else I have ever met. He can sit down and have the “hard” conversation with you, but by the end a smile, side hug, and “Love you, Bub” will send you back on your way ready to go. He is the leader of the leaders but never looks for the spotlight. He has quietly been the prime support for two directors over the last twelve summers and we cannot thank him enough for the work he has done.

He is endlessly loyal to this camp and his passion for it is greater than that of anyone else I have ever met.

In 1973 Ink Clark wrote “The heart of leadership at Dudley is embodied in the joy and the beauty of the interaction of one and another.” He is right. And the heart of leadership at Dudley is fully embodied in this man. It is my pleasure and my honor to dedicate the 2011 Last Whistle to the man with the biggest heart in the room. Athletics Andy Bowan -- It’s not just about the lax, bro, for this mid-1st rounder. Put a tennis racket in his hand and you’ll see a fine craftsman at work. Not a huge fan of that sport where you can only use your feet, so we moved him down on the draft board a few notches. We did like the work he put in on his free throw shooting all summer, getting daily schooling from our Camp Director. Martin Hansen -- In your deeper two shooter leagues (archery AND riflery), he’s a must-have play in your line-up. You might move him from the late first round to the mid-first round because he’s always a threat to bag a goal in the Garbage Bowl. Carl Jackson -- This veteran D-Head graduated to the A-Hut and did not disappoint those who drafted him as a 2011 sleeper. A baseball, hoops, and football points warrior, he’ll also deliver those Witherbee points on a regular basis. For those of you in a keeper league, you’d be off your conk to give CJ up. Fred Kapper -- Fred’s a great play in your flex spot. You need to fill the shooter slot in your line-up? You take him high in the first round. Add a point or two for his skills at handling a glen full of Cubbies with no leaders around. Martha McKinley -- Versatile both on the court and on the soccer field. She won’t get you many points for her football officiating, but huge bonus Witherbee points are there for the taking with her ability to memorize lines. Slightly downgraded to mid-first round because of injuries and bug allergies. Dave Nelson -- This PTPer can bring it strong on the court and on the football field. Allergic to the lax field, but he has major upside

potential with his skill at planning enormous all-Camp events. Gets bonus council ring and W’Bee points. High first-rounder. Ryan Spring -- A must play in your soccer slot, and he will get you a few points for his skill behind the wheel of the Gator. Also brings quality production in your basketball and football positions. If you play in a PPT (Point Per Technical) league, he’s a must start each week. Chris Smith -- A major bust in 2011, though through no fault of his own. Delivered early promise as a waiver wire pick-up at the half season mark, unfortunately his season came to an end when he was put on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list with appendicitis. Pete Kotz -- He was a “love” in our “love/hate” pre-season report for racking up major ankle-taping points, and we see no reason not to draft him high this year again. We have him as a late first round because 1) he’s half season and 2) he struggles with the straightness of his lines with the field striper. Bump him up a few notches for the points he’ll get you at the lax slot and his ability to run a track meet. Dave “Westy” West -- You put this first-rounder in your golf slot at the beginning of the season and you do not take him out. Period. He also provides good depth at your Gator driver and field striper slots--if either of those guys get injuries, he drives a mean golf cart and always has an extra case of Arctic White spray paint in the Golf Shack. Blair Dils -- Not afraid to ref a sport a he knows nothing about, but the balky hamstring makes him a much riskier play. Had trouble adjusting from the Toro to the Gator. Late second round.

ARTS

What was the your favorite arts-thing at camp? Was it Blake Harper’s light-disco-trance-hiphop-DJ explosion on the Wednesday Night Show stage? Was LW WKH GD\ %LJ -RH DQG WKH 6ZLP 3RLQW VWDII RIĂ€FLDOO\ opened Swim Point? Maybe it was an afternoon weaving lanyard, pressing a t-shirt or throwing a pot with the ladies of Brodie. Maybe it was singing with Mayo in the Gospel Choir or singing and dancing with Dom and Alexei. When you get down to it, the Arts Department is where you make stuff. Tons of stuff. Tons of great stuff. Sometimes it’s personal – a hemp necklace for a friend back home. Othertimes it’s public – you were the funniest act at a Wednesday Night Show. In every instance you bring your ideas, add on a little hard work, and walk out with something magical. Here are my favorite Arts creations from the summer of 2011: 6HOĂ€VKO\ P\ Ă€UVW IDYRULWH FUHDWLRQ ZDV WKH VW session “Shawshank Yappyâ€? video. A few of those old, green, weather worn, camper beaten, Eureka tents that we use in the Hike Hut have purchase dates from as far back as 1988. The WHQWV IURP WKH ¡V DUH HDVLO\ LGHQWLĂ€DEOH 7KH IDEULF is thicker and sturdier, the zippers are really big, and they weigh twice as much as the new ones. After working in the Hike Hut, one picks up on some of these subtleties. I happened to notice the differences in the tents during my third or fourth “Tent City.â€? This happens at the end of every summer when the Hike Hut staff sets up all 60-70 tents in rows for a thorough cleaning, and we call it Tent City. Wandering the rows of empty tents at Tent City, my mind naturally starts to imagine all of the different trips that each of these green tents has been on. And if these tent walls could talk, oh the stories of campers that they could tell.

the 2011 Tent City. On that afternoon, the entire Outdoors Department staff found themselves sitting in the grass, all together, and without an activity to prepare for. This was such an unusual occurrence that it hadn’t happened since pre-season. The ten of us including David Langston, Tina Swanberg, Alexandra MacCormack, Mollie Farnham, Dylan Pollock, Tom Arnold, Philip Leutgerath, Bill Harper, Kari Post and I were suddenly surprised ourselves – sitting sitting together, taking a well deserved break, with an entire summer of campers and outdoor activities unexpectedly behind us. The summer had breezed by in a fury of packing, belaying, climbing, facilitating, canoeing, unpacking, gardening, hiking and walking around the woods in the dark. If you are a camper, I hope that you are reading this and remembering what outdoor adventure that you went on this summer. If you are a parent and alumni, you may also be thinking back to that hike or canoe trip that you did during your time here. We may still have that tent that you used. There is as incredible history at Camp Dudley of boys going into the woods to breath the fresh Adirondack air, to explore the mountains and rivers of the park, and to attain their own piece of outdoor adventure. This summer was no exception. We had the usual camping, hiking, canoeing and rock climbing every week for all divisions. The Hike Hut also provided summer-long opportunities for campers on the rock climbing wall, at the Challenge Course, with cabin suppers and overnights, in the Farm-toPlate Individual Major, during the Senior Night Experience, with the Boys’ Camping Society, and of course, the Aides Experience. Every camper at Dudley did some mix of these outdoor activities.

While a few of those old green tents retire every summer, most of them are waiting, on a shelf, in the Hike Hut, ready to house another round of incredible Dudley wilderness trips.

As winter approaches and I look back on the photos of this summer, I’m already excited for 2012 and the outdoor trips to be. While a few of those old green tents retire every summer, most of them are waiting, on a shelf, in the Hike Hut, ready to house another round of incredible Dudley wilderness trips. See you then. Sincerely, Scott Steen #15509 47

James Frankel # 18534

I have told my cabin and few others this story and I would like to share it with all of you today. The day before everyone arrived for opening day Tommy Treiber, Will Plumb and I, along with my cub leader Dr. Damien Ellins, visited one of my favorite places in the Adirondacks for the first time this summer, “The Ink Spot.” We swam in the glassy narrow scar between the rocks, admired the rushing waterfall, slid down the slides above and soaked in the early summer sun of the mid afternoon, the kind that makes you just want to fall asleep regardless of where you are or what you’re doing, for a few of our last precious pre-season hours. After the short hike out we returned to the car and headed back to camp, but not before stopping at a gas station to pick up, and scoff down, a

68

Yoo-Hoo and a couple of Slim Jims one last time before campers arrived. It was here that I decided to purchase, as I often do, a one-dollar scratch-off ticket, and after the initial setback of the Mobil station not carrying my go-to game lucky 7’s, I bought a Take-5 ticket instead. To my pleasant surprise, I won another ticket Unfortunately, the prize was not another scratch-off, but instead, a ticket for the television drawing that evening, which I wouldn’t be able to watch. Slightly disappointed, as we began driving again I quickly started to ramble about how nice it would be to win, say 100 million dollars or so that night, to which Thomas asked, “Would you leave camp?” And after a moments thought I replied, “No, I wouldn’t, and as a matter of fact I would do exactly what I am doing after camp as well, and I would re-

turn to Davidson after that.” I would surround myself with the exact same people, treat them the same way, hope they did likewise, and do the exact same things that I do now. It was then and there, holding a cheap lottery ticket, drinking Yoo-Hoo and eating Slim Jims, in the back seat of a truck, halfway between the gas station and the Essex County fairgrounds that I realized, I could not ask for a better life, this was as good as it gets, and I wanted to be able to wake up every morning for the rest of it and make the same claim. That is my definition of serenity. A big reason why I was able to feel that sentiment then, and still feel it today, is because I am in the midst of what is easily the best year of my life. We are now just over halfway through 2011 and I can definitively say that these past 6 months have been the most fun, enriching, sad, poignant, and joyful that I have ever experienced, and possibly ever will. So why has 2011 been my best year yet? It certainly has not been the easiest; in fact it has easily been the most challenging, but I have gained and grown so much more than I could have ever imagined in this short span of time. December 31, 2010 was the first day of the rest of my life. The day of New Years Eve will always be marked off on my calendar. I will sense its approach days ahead of time and I will silently acknowledge the date when it comes. I will wake up and smile and laugh and love and live that day to the fullest, like I try to do every day, but I will know it is not exactly like any other day. That is the day I began to discover the three most valuable lessons I will ever learn. Love Life. Appreciate the awesome power of love. And always work to leave each day better than

you found it, and found yourself, in the morning. The first lesson I learned almost in an instant. A police officer came to my door and forced it upon me. Life is a unique and precious gift, given to all, appreciated by some and guaranteed to none. Every moment, experience, interaction and memory has an intangible value that cannot be exchanged or reclaimed once it has past. It is our responsibility to go into each day genuinely knowing in our minds that it is going to be a good one, because we will not get it back and we may not get another. Life is beautiful, but ever changing, and without a true love of it and it’s limitless wonders and opportunities, we cannot hope to accomplish the one thing worth doing in this world, sharing that love with others. The second lesson has been teaching me just that. Within us, we all have a power that is beyond that of any other in the world, yet it remains largely untapped.

Say it with me please – I have a superpower…

We have the power of limitless love, and therefore the ability to spread unlimited good in this world. Yet we restrain ourselves, conceal our “superpower,” if you will, and restrict that love to a select few individuals (parents, siblings, spouses), and sometimes not even them, when in reality, we can share it with everybody. (I love Dawn, Joe, Casie, Ashton, Ben, Nolan, AC.) Love is a tangible force that has the ability to create better individuals out of those who receive it and those who spread it, and make life all the more beautiful. I have felt it myself, every single day this year. I felt it in the first few days of January when my Pop-Warner football coach, a man who is in the late stages of Lou Gehrig’s disease and literally wakes each morning with slightly less life within him,

said to me with words he needed to physically exert himself to speak, “I’m here if you ever need anything,” a message that he reiterated in this letter I received here just a few short weeks ago. Or when a fellow leader and dear friend Brian Cropper called me from California to say, “I’ll be in Pelham tomorrow, I can’t wait to be there for you.” I felt the same love at Davidson when I would talk for hours at night with my girlfriend, or roommate, or any friend new or old, saying everything, or nothing, and know that every word was being heard. Or when 9 Dudley guys, including some of your leaders right now, and some I’m sure Matt is glad aren’t leaders, all came to visit me at school for their spring break. And lastly, I feel it here at Dudley every single time I receive a hug from AC or Shorty, Scooter, Dave or Sheila, or so many others and know they are genuinely caring and thinking about me in that instant. We all have the power to affect others for the better and love is the means by which we do it. It is not the distribution of challenges, pain or sorrow, but simply the collection of love and love alone that carries us through life’s wildernesses. The third lesson is how we go about sharing and collecting that love. Not long ago, the quote at the top of the morning schedule struck me, as Dale Carnegie said “You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get people interested in you.” I was taken aback because it perfectly described what I have found to be the case over the course of this year. We must look to go beyond just scratching the surface with the people that pass through our lives, because every individual is unique. They carry life and love in them too. I have with me a copy of “To Kill A Mockingbird,” which was sent up to me in a pack-

age and is filled with notes that let me know an English major got to it before I did. It is an excellent book, but if you don’t have the time for the whole novel, simply read page 33. That is the first place in which author Harper Lee unleashes one of the greatest lessons in literary history: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.” In this copy, it happens to be underlined with the word “truth” written in next to it. Everybody has a story, a past, a present and future but all too often we discount all three by failing to fully explore them or pretending like they are not worth discovering, and we settle for that. Never settle. Never stop exploring, because there is no telling what you will find, and love and life lies behind every stone unturned in the individuals around you. Once you have done that, you’ll find that the most wonderful connections of your life have been made. The final lesson is quick. I am a better person today than I was six months ago, and I hope that in at least some small way, I will be a better person tomorrow. My life is as good as it gets, but I personally still have infinite room for improvement. The pursuit of happiness is ongoing, the journey is its own reward and all we can hope to accomplish is to constantly better ourselves as individuals, so that we can continue to better the lives of those around us. The lessons have not come to me easily, but together, these principles allow me to wake up every morning excited for a new day, and they can do the same for you. When you’ve learned them, believe me, it is only natural to have No Bad Days. Dear God: Please allow us to reflect fondly, but not frequently, on the past; look hopefully, but not yearningly; to the future, and most of all, to live every day to the fullest in the present. 69

Chapel Talks 2011 Domanick Walker #21982

Good morning. For those of you that do not know me, my name is Domanick, or Dom for short. I am the Leader in Post Cabin. I am a Capricorn who likes long walks in the park, and at sunset on the beach, and the feeling you get when a cool breeze whips past you by the Gazebo. None of this is important but I thought you should know anyway. Now that that is over, let me restart this chapel talk by simply saying: This is the weirdest place on earth. Last year, I arrived here at Camp Dudley totally new. The only ties that I had to camp were my godfather and a missed summer back in 2005. Shortly after my arrival, I realized that things just weren’t too kosher in this joint. My first week at camp I met people and heard names like “Nipple Nad” and “Monkey Man” and even weirder and freakier names like “Big Joe.” It really took some serious adjusting. Moving forward into that summer, I experienced some wacky activities, such as “Save the Little Chicken and “Brother McGintey.” In this last one, the objective is to call out for your “brother” and then hit him once with a newspaper. Trust me… it was never one hit! It only took one meal for me to realize that all the boys who had played together and been buddies all day immediately turned against one another like savage animals. They kept yelling out which division was better – “C-U-B-B-I-E-S” or “P-L-E-B-ES!” – and pretty much hated each other for the remainder of the meal. I guess I now know that the overall goal is to not really hate one another, but to just see who can scream louder until the whistle blows to calm the masses down. Council Rings got even weirder with themes like: Librarians vs. Barbarians, Cops vs. Robbers, or one of the most disturbing... Dress like Burlington Barnett. Last year was crazy! So let me get to the point at hand. It is ok to be weird at Dudley. Camp is the only place in the world where you can do something wacky and crazy and it’s just fine to do so. Dudley allows you to be ambitious by going for a 70

Duke Dip, or acting like a woman on stage. I now realize that Dudley is the place where you can find solace and be the complete and true YOU. So to my new Dudleyites... you are safe here. Free yourself. And to all my wacky people... continue to be yourself and have a blast while doing so. Finally, to all of you that are stuck in the middle of somewhere... I was there, too. Trust me. When you really indulge, you will not be able to stop. Just look at me! Dear God: Thank you for this special place called Dudley... no matter how weird it gets.

This is the weirdest place on earth...

It only took one meal for me to realize that all the boys who had played together and been buddies all day immediately turned against one another like savaged animals
