who helped me this past summer. Without all of you, this book would not have been possible.

Thank you to Martha Storey for taking the time to help me out with the beginning stages of the design process and for checking in with me along the way to see how it was going. To all who submitted photos on a weekly, and sometimes daily, basis – your efforts have shown through brilliantly in this edition. Dedication Gail Coleman #20005 Kiniya’s Head Chef, Gail Coleman, a native of Vermont, is no stranger to our Camp community!

In 1992, Gail was hired as Camp’s second chef, serving lunch and dinner four days per week. A talented chef, with strong leadership skills, the PRYH WR +HDG &KHI LQ ZDV VLJQLÀFDQW IRU KHU It brought with it an increase in job responsibilities and time commitment.

As Head Chef, Gail has a special dedication to Kiniya. This is most evident in the daily meals she provides our community. Chef Gail works closely with Marnie in creating the meal plan each summer, manages all aspects of food service, food orders and oversees the health and safety operations of our kitchen. Like every event she handles, her menu, attention to detail, and personal care in serving is appreciated by all.

At Kiniya, Chef Gail has found a second home where she enjoys the challenge of addressing the daily nutritional needs of our camp community.

She has embraced our emphasis toward healthy living and sustainability and focuses on preparing nutritious and delicious meals. Her menu offers something for everyone with special attention paid to vegetarian options, gluten-free diets, home-style soups, healthy salads, fresh baked breads and desserts, and substantial hot meals.

The hardest worker we have ever known, Gail commits over 60 hours per week to Kiniya during her summers at Camp! The kitchen day starts early for Gail, who arrives at 5 am and works until SP ÀYH GD\V SHU ZHHN ZLWK DQ H[WHQGHG hour shift on Saturdays. If there are Special Events VXFK DV .LZL 'LQQHU %DQTXHW RU 3DUHQWV 9LVLWLQJ 'D\ VKH ZRUNV DGGLWLRQDO ORQJ KRXUV WR HQVXUH success.

A chef of 38 years, Gail’s career in the Food Service industry began at Trinity College. She later made the move to Champlain College and then onto University of Vermont, where she currently resides 4

DV 7KH )RRG VHUYLFH 'LUHFWRU DW +DUULV 0LOOLV 6HUYing anywhere between 1700 to 2400 meals per day, IXOÀOOLQJ D OHDGHUVKLS UROH DW WKH ODUJHVW FROOHJH LQ Vermont is a credit to Gail’s skills and outstanding management style!

While Gail enjoys her full-time job, she notes that her summer role at Camp is her ‘Real Job’! When asked during an interview by Leader, Mary Piazza, this summer, Chef Gail noted the reasons she loves Camp so much.

Said Gail, “This is a big job. It’s non-stop. It’s not a ODUJH IDFLOLW\ ZKHUH \RX KDYH WKH IDQF\ HTXLSPHQW We do everything by hand here, like your grandmother would have done when she was preparing PHDOV IRU \RXU IDPLO\ DQG LW UHTXLUHV WHDPZRUN WR be successful. Everyone is a valued member of this community, and this is emphasized in the kitchen DV PXFK DV LW LV RQ WKH VSRUWV Ă€HOG 0\ IDYRULWH SDUW of my job is that I get to work with Pat Teague and VXSSRUW Ă€YH JLUOV IURP GLIIHUHQW FRXQWULHV HDFK summer in the kitchen. I try to take them under my wing like they’re my own to make sure they have HYHU\WKLQJ WKH\ QHHG WR HQVXUH D SRVLWLYH H[SHULence for them. That’s important to me!

The Spirit The greatest reward of my job at Camp, and the primary reason I return year after year, IS THE &+,/'5(1 7KHLU SRVLWLYH DWWLWXGHV DQG WKHLU compliments make every day a good day! I get immense satisfaction knowing that somebody’s mother sent her child here and that the child is so very happy and content because of the food and WKH ORYLQJ VXSSRUWLYH HQYLURQPHQW VKH ÀQGV KHUH The education and leadership opportunities these girls are getting, no matter what activity they’re doing, is remarkable and it’s a pleasure to be a part of it�.

Chef Gail is known and loved by the campers, leaders, and staff. She has played an unforgettable and essential part in each of her 20 summers at Camp. Therefore, we proudly dedicate this 2011 issue of The Spirit to our Head Chef, our mentor, PRWKHU ÀJXUH DQG RXU IULHQG *DLO &ROHPDQ

Two facts you may not know about Gail: 1. With an incredibly strong work ethic, Chef Gail has never missed a day of work at Camp, and has spent seventeen of her last twenty birthdays working her regular shift at Camp! The only years she missed were in 1995, 2000, and 2006, when her birthday fell on a Sunday! Now that’s dedication!!!

2. Chef Gail rides a motorcycle! She owns a 1986 Honda Rebel, a replica of the Harley-Davis low-rider motorcycle. She claims it’s the only kind of bike that’s low enough to touch her feet to the ground! At approximately 5 feet tall, Gail can often be found using stepping stools and crates in the kitchen.

She claims that she hasn’t ridden in two years because she works too much! We have no doubt that’s the case!

by Bear Think of your favorite song for a moment.

What strikes you about it? What makes it the best song that you can think of? Is it a Lady Gaga song? Is it a camp VRQJ" 'RHV LW KDYH D catchy tune or a great rhythm?

I was sitting behind a piano in a completely gray room with no windows, wishing that I could be in the dining hall playing a few songs before lunch began, catch a glimpse of the Lake and the Adirondacks, and sit down for a delicious Gailcooked meal with all of you.

I cracked open my hymnal and began to play through a few of my favorite songs: This is My Father’s World, Follow the Gleam, Climb Every , DP D O\ULFV SHUVRQ 7KH Ă€UVW WKLQJ WKDW , QRWLFH Mountain. Eventually I got distracted with some when I hear a song is whether I like its words. I different chords and began to write a song about can tell you that the Rattlin’ Bog tells the story of camp. It had a different melody to her song “You Belong with than the one that most of you have YdoYqk [Ydd `ge] Me,â€? is a tomboy who wears heard and it was slightly higher. I sneakers, does not cheerlead, recorded it on my computer and and wishes a certain boy would notice her. The best songs I have ever written are in two categories. I have moment-of-pure-inspiration songs, where I sit down at a piano and crank out a VRQJ ZLWKLQ D IHZ KRXUV 7KHVH WHQG WR WHOO VSHFLĂ€F stories, refer to particular people, and use fairly simple musical patterns. Some of them are great, a lot of them are terrible. On the other hand, I have songs that I come back to over and over again. I edit them several times, change the way that I play them, and add new parts. ‘Neath the Pines was one of these.

The Spirit As I said, I like songs whose lyrics mean something WR PH :KHQ \RX JLUOV VLQJ WKH ÀQDO ÀYH WR PH and to each other at the end of Hymn Sing, I listen to what you’re saying. Climb Ev’ry Mountain challenges us to be brave, One Light promises XV WKDW ZH ZLOO ÀQG JXLGDQFH LQ RXU MRXUQH\ and You’ll Never Walk Alone reminds us that if following our dreams leads us into a dark and VWRUP\ SODFH ZH FDQ DOZD\V ÀQG SHRSOH DURXQG XV who love us and support us.

The lyrics to ‘Neath the Pines remind me of camp.

7KH\ VSHDN RI WKH OR\DO IULHQGV ZH ÀQG KHUH WKH ERQG WKDW ZH KDYH ZLWK RXU 'XGOH\ EURWKHUV the sunsets over Lake Champlain, and most importantly, the fact that Camp is one place on Earth that we can always call home. Hearing each of you sing those words back to me on Sunday nights is one of the most moving and honestly RYHUZKHOPLQJ WKLQJV , KDYH HYHU H[SHULHQFHG 6R this Chapel Talk is really meant to be a thank you, for listening to me, and for allowing me to listen to all of you, together at the end of each week.

Let’s think about it for 5 seconds‌ It’s hard, isn’t it?

, ZDV DVNHG WKLV TXHVtion at one of our leadership training sessions during preVHDVRQ DQG IRXQG LW VR GLIÀFXOW WKDW , FRXOGQ¡W HYHQ DQVZHU WKH TXHVWLRQ , KDG D VXGGHQ SDQLF DWWDFN that I was bland.

With some time removed, and serious thought into who I am, I realized that I was looking at it from the wrong perspective. I forced myself to ORRN GHHSHU WR VHDUFK P\ FKDUDFWHU LQ RUGHU WR ÀQG something to put on that list.

Here we go‌ , PDGH LW RQ WKH 'HDQ¡V /LVW DW &ROOHJH WKLV VHPHVter! That was something small, yet respectful. What else was there? ‌ I can name every dog breed, HA! That’s not just something any average human being would know.

And there it was, I was making progress with my list and realizing that small things are accomplishI have never run a marathon, nor climbed to the ments too. I just needed to look at top of an ice-covered wall. After my P\ XQLTXH JLIWV DQG WDOHQWV HYHQ I Just needed to Ă€YH \HDUV RQ WKH VZLP WHDP , QHYHU the small ones. walked away with a blue ribbon. My look at my unique skating team never made it into the top gifts and talents, I can tie a cherry stem with my ten, and I’ve never left the country to tongue; I can recite the song “baby WUDYHO WKH ZRUOG 7KH H[HUFLVH RI FRP]n]f l`] keYdd got backâ€? word for word; and I ing up with 10 things I was proud of won the leader/staff Big Mouth ones. was beginning to make me feel really JDPH 1R RQH HOVH KDV WKDW H[DFW FRPELQDWLRQ RI bad about myself. achievements. Huh, things that I am proud about +DYLQJ VXFK GLIĂ€FXOW\ FRPLQJ XS ZLWK P\ OLVW , left the meeting disappointed and frustrated, and continued to think about it for days afterward. Because I didn’t have any concrete accomplishments P\ LPPHGLDWH UHVSRQVH WR WKH TXHVWLRQ ZDV WKDW , had accomplished nothing and therefore had nothing to be proud of.

These accomplishments seem like every day activities, which they are, but they are also my tiny victories. It makes no sense for me to compare my accomplishments to other people because I am not that person, nor will I ever be. I am improving my spelling skills, I love my laugh and right now, this very minute, I am overcoming my fear of public speaking.

The Spirit My “accomplishment� list slowly changes to WKLQJV WKDW , DP SURXG OLNH WKH RULJLQDO TXHVWLRQ had asked. I had subconsciously decided that the only thing you can be proud of is an achievement, and that’s just not true. I am proud that I know Bear’s Hymn by heart; I am proud of all of my peers; and I am proud to be a Leader at Kiniya.

There, 13 things that I am proud of in a matter of 2 min and 37 seconds. None of the things I just listed are necessarily outstanding, but these strange little tid-bits of fun facts and special skills are what make up me, Meagan Oliver.

It took me until this summer to realize that small things are great things. You don’t need to complete VRPH HSLF TXHVW RU GUDPDWLFDOO\ VXFFHHG LQ D ORQJ pending goal in order to be proud of who you are.

As I sit in my cool, airconditioned, apartment in Los Angeles, I cannot help but wish I was sitting around the hot, PRVTXLWR LQIHVWHG -Xnior Council ring with you all. Summer 2011 ZDV Ă&#x20AC;OOHG ZLWK GXFW WDSH EUDFHOHWV ODFURVVH SHQnies, shallow Lake Champlain water, and lots and lots of memories you- nor I- will ever forget. /HW¡V WDNH D TXLFN WULS GRZQ PHPRU\ ODQH RU maybe down Kiniya road if you wishâ&#x20AC;Ś

summer, our second session campers were DQ[LRXVO\ DZDLWLQJ their turn to come to camp.

7KH -XQLRU 'LYLVLRQ leaders pulled out all the stops second session, and planned three incredible council rings.

Remember the multiple dogs who came to visit XV DW FDPS DW RXU Ă&#x20AC;UVW ever Best in Show council ring, or your fearless Assistant Leaders taking on the milk challenge at the Leader vs.

Food council ring? Although these council rings were awesome. And of course, second session wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t complete without our Summer Vacation â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Ganza - complete with a wave pool, slip n slide, and boat rides, our ganza had the Seniors wishing they hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t grown up so fast!

First session started off with a bang. We celebrated the Forth of July with an early morning dip, parade DURXQG FDPSXV WKH Ă&#x20AC;UVW HYHU &DPS 'XGOH\ DW .Lniya 1 and 3 kilometer running races, and an afternoon carnival complete with greased watermelon, sponge toss, and apple diving. Later in the session we took a break from summer and headed back to school for our Mad D]l k lYc] Y ima[c ljah \gof 6FLHQWLVW ([WUDYDJDQ]D :H JRW WR memory lane- or maybe down WU\ RXW DOO RI P\ IDYRULWH VFLHQFH H[Kiniya Road if you wish... periments. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure you will never forget making crazy colored erupting volcanoes or watching diet coke H[SORGH RXW RI D ERWWOH DIWHU VKRYing Mentos into it. We wrapped up Ă&#x20AC;UVW VHVVLRQ ZLWK WKH FRPSOHWLRQ RI RXU VHUYLFH SURMHFW EHQHĂ&#x20AC;WWLQJ WKH 5RQDOG 0F'RQDOG +RXVH LQ %XUOington. By making cards and Paper 0DFKH Ă RZHUV IRU WKH SDWLHQWV DQG families, we helped to brighten WKHLU KRPHV DQG JLYH WKHP DQ H[WUD boost of support many of them were in need of. $V Ă&#x20AC;UVW VHVVLRQ FDPSHUV OHIW RXU gates to return home for the remainder of the 46

-XQLRU 'LYLVLRQ H[WHQGHG RXU community outreach all the way to Afghanistan second session.

With the help of our devoted and beloved Nurse Jean, we participated in a morning of card and Ă DJ PDNLQJ WR show our support for the American troops abroad.

Celebrating Christmas in August really topped off second

Cheetah session. Running to the dining hall after lights out to sing Christmas carols and eat milk and cookies was a highlight of my summer!
