Hello Alex, please tell our readers who you are and what is your purpose in professional life? Hello everyone, I am Alex Koloskov, a curious photographer who loves to work in a studio, shooting tricky and challenging to photograph things. I also love to share my findings and solutions, and this is how people know me :-) This is probably the purpose of my professional life as for now: to help other photographers to get things done by showing uncommon ways and unusual solutions in photography. I started as a commercial photographer, but when I became successful in it, I realized that doing commercial photography assignments is not what I want to do for the rest of

the better: I love to solve puzzles. Usually it is higlossy things or “in motion” stuff, like liquids.
I am a studio photographer, and my most loved studio lenses are Canon 180mm F3.5L Macro for products and Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS for people. These are the best from Canon for tasks I do in a studio. When going outside, 90% of the time I use canon 8-15mm F4.0L fisheye lens: I like to create unusual shots from “usual” places, and this lens fits my desire perfectly :-)

I did not have any mistakes. Every negative result I had was a great learning experience and I can’t call it mistake. Mistakes are something which we regret, and I do not have anything to regret in my photography :-) And the best thing I learned is to be myself, not trying to meet expectations of photographer’s community when it comes to self-assignments.
Can you suggest one or two “secrets” our readers can do to improve their ability to take better photographs?
There is no “secret” behind successful shots, the only difference between great and plain shot is that photographer did not stop after unsatisfactory or mediocre result. Did not stop even after 10 attempts of getting desired shot, continued to “dance around” and eventually got the image which makes him/her feel good about themselves. So, the secret is to never give up, work till you will be proud of yourself :-)
How does your family feel about your photography and do you travel a lot? I am happy photographer, my wife is my post-production artist and she loves working in Photoshop. Our kids grow up in the studio, and it is great feeling when

I work in the studio with kids “helping” me around :-)) I do not travel much, and if we travel, we do it with the whole family. I do not like to be separated from those who I love, and this is one of the reasons I enjoy working in our studio, which is the basement of our house :-) This was one of the reason I stopped doing commercial architecture assignments: despite a great success I had to leave this marked as it required too much travel where I couldn’t have my family with me. I can tell that I never regret this decision.
What was the most interesting photography trip you have ever taken? Why? All my photography trips
happen in the studio, and the most interesting are the hi-speed action liquid shots. Liquids are so unpredictable, messy and fun to do!
Any books that you would recommend that are inspirational I have never read any photography-related books, all my inspiration comes from other photographer’s work I see online, as well as reading about life of people like Steve Jobs or Albert Einstein. Inspiration and creativity is something which can be found only inside our brains, and to know myself, to find my true desires is essential part of being inspired. These are few from books I’ve enjoyed reading: “Crush It!: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In on Your Pas-
sion” by Gary Vaynerchuk, “The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich” by Timothy Ferriss, “Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us” by Seth Godin
What advice can you give aspiring photographers? Find your passion and follow it. You can be successful and become “the best” only doing what you truly love. Do not think about the money, think about what do you feel when doing your work. Do you feel good, inspired, is it interesting for you? Are you waking up thinking how cool the day will be because you have not finished something pretty interesting yesterday? If you’ll find your passion, money will follow.

Do you have any dreams, what would you change if all was possible? I want to help people to find themselves. I see that 99% of human population are doing what they have to do, but not what they truly want to do. Just ask yourself: would I continue doing what I do if I’d have as much money as I needed? If the answer is “no way”, than you are not doing what you love :-) We were taught that this is OK to live like this, but I know that there is another, better way to spend our lives. I hope I’ll be able to help to change educational system and create new pro-
grams aimed towards developing personal skills and finding “built-in” talents of each human being, rather than preparing our kids to become a perfect fit in the commercialized consumer chain. I think we all would live in much better world if our kids would become creators, not consumers.
Anything else you would like to add? I have so may ideas to share but do not have time to do it now, hope one day I’ll write a book :-) Thanks for letting us pick your brain Alex. - My pleasure, I’m glad that I met you guys and wish Camerapixo project to be successful. You are doing great things!

Sławek began adventure with photography in the late 70’s and Smiena camera. Then it was time for Zenit and high school photo club, which he ran for almost 4 years. With the purchase of his first Nikon SLR camera, Sławek began relationship with that Japanese brand. Association with Nikon was not only by use of the equipment but also a wide Nikon user community activation. Up to November 2009, hesja served as President of the Nikon Club Poland Association and is now a lecturer at the Nikon Academy.
In 2010 he launched the project “Odloty hesji” consisting of great amount of aviation pictures and Album. In 2012 he was awarded the prize Flight Eagles 2011 in the category aviation photographer. In Sławek portfolio you find pictures of almost every field but dominated by the theme of aviation. Matteo is 25 years old Italian photographer. Matteo started photography in 2009 when he bought his first DSLR. In a short time photography has become Matteo’s way of live. He started the experience completely self taught, experimenting with curious ways to use light and unusual points of view. Matteo’s first shots were mainly focused on still life and details photography. Recently he has been interested in street and lifestyle photography, he loves to spend his free time walking around with camera capturing faces and unusual situations that he meet.

Baber Afzal is one of the leading landscape photographers and an aspiring Director from Pakistan. Torkil started to get serious about photography 3 years ago, that`s also when he first started with photoshop. Opening photoshop was like opening a whole new world for Torkil, and together with photomatix and NIK software he started to experiment with these powerfull tools. He soon realized that he also had to consentrate on the camera as well, photoshop alone can`t make a great photo. Since Torkil’s daytime job “prevented” him from taking photos during the day. Torkil soon drifted along into HDR photography and mixing HDR and textures which is something he really does a lot (maybe too much, but can`t help himself), loves the feel of it.

A small rural town in the Fukui prefecture, centre Japan, in beautiful mountainous surroundings. Just over 1,000 people. An aging population dealing with everyday life whilst most of their children left for university or for employment. Few young come back. A missing generation The number of students at the local elementary school has been dramatically decreasing over the last few years. This year there are only 28 of them and there are rumours that some time soon the school will close and the local children will have to commute to the next town to attend their classes.
“Missing Generation” is an ongoing long term documentary project that I am planning to complete in the next 4 to 5 years. This project will be bringing me to frequently visit this town in the years to come trying to document how the town will inevitably be changing while the locals go on their daily life as usual, adapting to the changing circumstances, with the typical enduring Japanese spirit. The photographs published in this issue of Camerapixo are from my first visit to the town, earlier in 2012, when I had the rare privilege to be granted authorisation to spend some time with the kids in the school and to photograph them.
The flip side of this is the strong bond that has been building between children of different grades and between the children and the elderly people in the town.

As it turns out wilderness for many is also a road. The road is not only a goal, not in the literal sense. It is also a way to test yourself, check perseverance, strength of character, patience, social skills, kindness. Last year I had the pleasure to get in touch with the Association of Offroad Cars FORFITER 4x4 of Rawicz and have done several events photoessays, with FORFITTER 4x4, including rides of off-road vehicles: GATKI XXXL MILICKIE BŁOTA (28-29.10.2011) oraz MIĘDZY ZALEWAMI, OS COBRA (21.04.2012).
Dirt, mud, water, steep hills and sharp descents, and off-road vehicles, vicious crew and skills at the highest level. Off-road racing is not just a competition, it’s detachment from everyday’s life, it is a way to actively spend time in good company and great atmosphere, despite the failures, unfinished races, and even a costly failure. A result of these two passions: photography and offroad is the following material.
I appreciate unconventional people, and those are certainly participants in this type of projects, because not everyone can change a white shirt and a suit or a dress (yes, yes, women participate also) to overalls and waders, not everyone enters the water in November, not everyone drives into the water :)

The Aday.org project was initiated by the Swedish non-profit foundation Expressions of Humankind. Their mission is to use the power of photography to create, share and inspire perspectives on daily life-today and tomorrow. We chose some of the best photographs so you can take a look and get the feeling what just happened in the same day around the world.

All of northeastern Greenland – 40 percent of the island – is a ational park, the world’s largest, and twice the size of France. In addition to polar bears, walruses, wolves, Arctic foxes and muskoxen, there are 14 men from the Danish navy’s dog sled company, Sirius. Supplies arrive once a year by boat. The servicemen patrol the vast area in twos, using sleds pulled by a dozen dogs. “This is my partner Michael Kristensen with the dogs near the Daneborg base on Young Sund Fjord. The dogs are Greenland. Sled Dogs, bred by Sirius over 60 years. They are gentle but untamed and spend the entire year outdoors. We plan our route by first dropping supplies by plane or boat. We spend months on the trail, sleeping in tents and melting snow for water. The longest patrol is 3,000 kilometres, and a day’s march is normally 30 kilometres. The greatest challenges are the cold – the temperature can drop to minus 50 degrees C – and the loneliness. But the solitude is also the most fantastic part.”

A passion for cricket is something that unites Indians, whether rich or poor. A lack of proper facilities and equipment has never stopped children from practising the sports they love. These enthusiastic players are the children of dairy farmers, imitating their sporting heroes, such as fellow Mumbaian and legendary cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar. It has been said that in cricket the individual not only plays against the opposing team but also fights his or her own destiny – a theme that Indians in particular adore.

When the Costa Concordia ran aground on 13 January 2012, the tiny island of Giglio suddenly found itself at the centre of a crisis. The islanders rose to the challenge, helping to rescue people at sea, then taking drenched and terrified survivors into their homes. Perhaps their kindness counterbalanced the infamy of the ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, who faces trial on charges of multiple manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, and abandoning ship. Of the 4,252 passengers on the cruise ship, 32 died. Somewhat uncomfortably, Giglio now finds itself a focus for disaster tourism.

“My father, Doug Kelbaugh, stretching at my grandmother’s home in a retirement community in Naples, Florida. This exercise helps loosen his sore lower back by stretching thighs and hamstrings at the same time. He cycles 100–150 miles a week and is currently training for bike trips in Glacier National Park and wine valleys in the San Francisco Bay Area.”

One advantage of being shipwrecked near a major city is pizza delivery. When the Japanese tuna trawler Eihatsu Maru ran aground near Cape Town, its 90 tonnes of fuel oil were a potential threat to the area’s beaches. With a tugboat working to pull the ship free, a local radio station took pity on the crew of 28 Taiwanese and sent them the pizzas.

A Vatican tailor, Ety Cicioni, takes measurements for a Swiss Guard’s summer uniform. After 15 years at the job, he has made thousands of them. Andreas Burkhard’s costume is in the original family colours of Pope Julius II, who established the Pontifical Swiss Guard in 1506. The metal morion helmet, worn on ceremonial occasions, has coloured ostrich-feather plumes.

Salome Manuel has worked for 15 years at the Creek Road Market, selling okporoko (stockfish) caught in the creeks and rivers that flow down through southern Nigeria to the Atlantic. The dried fish – red snapper and more – are a popular feature of Nigerian cuisine, prepared by soaking and softening in stew. “She buys large fish in bulk, already dried in the sun and smoked under a charcoal fire. Every night, she smokes the fish again under charcoal to keep them preserved. Although she wishes she could earn more money, she has been able to use her profits to send one of her sons into higher education.”

China is facing a blood shortage in some parts of the country, as more people undergo surgery, but blood donation has not kept pace. The rate of giving is higher in Hong Kong (30 people per thousand) than on the mainland (only nine per thousand), in part because foreign nationals have been encouraged to supply blood for rare blood types.

Sepideh is studying industrial engineering at Tehran Azad University and has been a member of the Iranian Women’s Track and Field team since 2005. A holder of three national records, in 2010 she won two gold medals at the West Asian Track and Field Championship, held in Aleppo, Syria, and hopes to qualify for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Big city commuters have their unwritten codes of behaviour, most of which seem to involve disconnection from their neighbours. More than five million people every day ride the subway in New York. On this mid-afternoon train on Line 7, which connects Queens with Manhattan, there are meditators, text messengers and window-gazers. One of the best-known sights on this line is 5 Pointz, a former warehouse that is now divided into artist studios and is decorated outside with famous and novice graffiti art.

Cricket practice in front of Kabul’s abandoned Darul Aman Palace, built by King Amanullah Khan in the 1920s (Darul Aman means ”Abode of Peace”). British soldiers were playing cricket in Afghanistan in the midnineteenth century, but the game became popular with Afghans only in the 1990s when refugees from Pakistan brought it back. Cricket was the only sport permitted under the Taliban regime. Afghanistan’s national team almost qualified for the 2011 World Cup.

Heading towards Mexico, Peru and Colombia, the International Space Station (ISS) appears to have Earth – about 220 miles (355km) away – as a temporary ceiling. Inside the spacecraft, without gravity to impose itself, the astronauts had to designate an arbitrary ceiling and floor. Outside, to the left, is a Japanese robot arm construction for maintenance. Two cooling panels point homewards to Earth while the large solar panels soak up energy. The ISS orbits Earth 16 times every 24 hours.

This shimmering aurora is over the ICL, or IceCube Lab. IceCube is a huge neutrino detector (1 cubic kilometre in size) that looks deep into the ice to detect neutrinos from space interacting. The hope is that this may reveal more about our universe. Sven commutes on foot from the Amundsen– Scott South Pole Station less than a mile away. “It is normally too cold to use any vehicles”, says Sven. “That day it was minus 60 degrees C on average. The landscape is very flat but the wind creates big sastrugis, or snow ‘waves’, so it reminds me of being out on the ocean. Because the night is six months long at the South Pole, the only natural light comes from the moon and auroras. We are getting closer to a solar maximum and we see more – and nicer, bigger – auroras than average.”

Rhea Monis cradles her first child, a boy, moments after giving birth at the Lorma Medical Center in northwestern Luzon – the first of four deliveries that day. The obstetrician had detected the baby’s heart rate decreasing with every contraction and elected for emergency surgery. It was a good call, because the umbilical cord had become wrapped around the baby’s neck. Eye surgeon Rey Espinueva witnessed the dramatic moment: “I was just finished with my operation in the adjacent room when I saw through the glass window that an expectant mother was about to undergo Caesarian Section. I then asked the expectant mother permission to take her photos while the procedure was ongoing.” Mum called her son Giordie Monis.

Rush hour in Rio on a cold, rainy day. Commuters in Rio squeeze together – still uncomfortable but perhaps less embarrassed – in womenonly metro cars, marked with pink stripes. This train is bound for suburban Pavuna. At 17:20 a fiscal (ticket inspector) asked a man to leave the car. Similar gender-specific experiments have been made in at least nine other countries. The motivations range from the religious to the prevention of sexual harassment.

Almost two million Afghans live in Pakistan, most of them having arrived since the 1980s. One nameless young Afghan refugee pours water on a boy called Doost Hamid. The water point is in a slum area on the outskirts of the Pakistani capital, Islamabad. Water shortages in Pakistan have increased as the levels have dropped in the country’s dams, and as Himalayan glaciers disappear.

Winners announced! The 2012 Creative Asia Photography Awards was successfully held in July in conjunction with the Creative Asia Conference in Mongkok, Hong Kong. The Creative Asia Conference and Awards is an educational extravaganza, taking photographers to the next level in their craft and business. The format of the competition is revolutionary in its vision to evolve, include and educate its entrants. There were a total of 1730 images entered by 438 photographers from 47 countries. The final round of judging, held at the conference in front of a live audience, had an additional online audience of 1200 people. The finalist judges were Zack Arias, Robert Earp, Peter Eastway, Raymond Kam, Michael Greenberg, Drew Gurian, Mike Langford, Bobby Lee, Joe McNally, Louis Pang, Ian Poole, and Antonio Ranieri. The overall winner of the Awards is Charmaine Heyer of Australia. Charmaine was also first in the Illustrative category.
