From the Head of School Fifty years have passed since Nancy and Marshall Benjamin traveled by car from Michigan to North Palm Beach, Florida – two educational pioneers looking to serve students in the then-unpopulated north end of Palm Beach County. With respect to independent school education, this part of Florida was indeed the frontier. After purchasing a small tract of land off of U.S. 1, Nancy and Marshall founded the North Palm Beach Private School, a first stop for young children just beginning their formal education. The Benjamins brought

forward the wisdom they collected from their years as young educators back home, and taught youngsters to read, write, sing, appreciate the arts, explore athletics, and become caring and careful young citizens.

Fast-forward to 2010, and The Benjamin School has grown from a handful of students to a population of 3-year-olds through high school seniors, numbering approximately 1,200.

From a tiny proprietary setting, TBS is now a shining example of an NAIS, not-for-profit, coeducational, college preparatory independent school. On two stunning campuses, 10 acres in North Palm Beach and 50 acres in Palm Beach Gardens, children from 3 years old to 18 learn, grow, experience and mature. Our school has come to be considered the best in the area, and tough competition for independent schools across the state of Florida.

Respected throughout the country by the finest colleges and universities, Benjamin sends its students off to higher education with a remarkable set of tools for success. Fifteen years of study in a modern language, including Mandarin Chinese, is now possible for children entering at our youngest grade level. The ability to choose among 20 Advanced Placement

courses in the Upper School is emblematic of the breadth and depth of our offerings. Dance, band, early orchestral instruction, visual and performing arts, clubs, organizations, honor societies – all are landmarks of any student’s day as he or she travels through the Benjamin experience. Character education at all grade levels refines each of our students in ways that are clearly seen and identified by others.

Middle School and Upper School athletics bring a resounding spirit to TBS. Teams representing all sports reach district, regional and state competition on a regular basis. The athletic facilities, especially the fields on the Upper School campus, are unparalleled in quantity and quality in the state of Florida. Boys’ Varsity Golf and Lacrosse won the state title in 20092010, and Boys’ Lacrosse again won the state title in 2010-2011. Boys’ and girls’ teams in all sports bring home the banners to our campus gymnasiums. The Benjamin School rides on a

All of this started with a motor trip made by Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin from Michigan to Florida in 1960. Without a doubt, they have arrived! Thank you for helping us celebrate a yearlong tribute to 50 years of excellence in serving children in Northern and Central Palm Beach County.

Honoring Tradition. Celebrating Our A Step Back In Time

At first, all they ever wanted to do was teach young children to read – one child at a time. Marshall and Nancy Benjamin opened North Palm Beach Private School in 1960 with a single goal in mind. Teach children the skills they need to learn and they will educate themselves.

The school’s founding educators taught their first class of 24 kindergarteners in two older houses they converted into classrooms in their quaint, little school nestled among the tropical greenery in the northern end of Palm Beach County.

With a belief that the school’s physical environment contributed to a child’s total educational experience, the couple made certain to preserve the trees on their small parcel as they cleared land, laid walkways, and built the school’s first classroom and those that followed to accommodate each new school year’s incoming class.

Students were taught how to play a musical instrument and they learned to speak French. Classes in music, art, and drama were also part of the school day.

Holiday choral productions, spelling bees, puppet shows, and the spring art exhibit became integral annual activities within the school community. Recess and intramural sports encouraged cooperative learning through team play.

Athletic participation became a time to foster appreciation for the sport and an opportunity to motivate a concern for decency, fairness, and social justice.

The Benjamins’ no-nonsense philosophy embraced the vision to teach children about life. Students learned respect for themselves and each other. They learned about responsibility. They learned to be good citizens. And they learned the importance of doing their part to help make a better, wiser, and kinder world.

A half-century later, as The Benjamin School ascends into a new decade and beyond, its founding character shaped 50 years ago by Marshall and Nancy Benjamin still permeates the heart of a sustaining mission: Given one small child eager to learn, The Benjamin School strives to provide an education “Second to None” – one child at a time.

The 50th Anniversary Flag Raising Ceremonies, launched on the first day of school, signaled the eagerly anticipated onset of the school’s golden anniversary. School administrators addressed students assembled at the special morning flag raisings, and the divisions’ vocalists and instrumentalists performed musical selections at each of the respective campus ceremonies.

Athletic Hall of Fame Induction

commenced on the Upper School Campus during a ceremonial halftime presentation to honor The Benjamin School’s initial class of five distinctive inductees: gold medal swimmer Ryan Berube ‘92, world-class runner Julian Reynolds Clay ’95, Benjamin School parents, grandparents, and longtime TBS supporters, Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, and school co-founder Marshall Benjamin. The Hall of Fame was established to honor and to perpetuate the memory of those individuals who, either through participation or support, have made outstanding contributions to Benjamin athletics, and who have helped to bring recognition, honor, distinction, and excellence to the school and its athletic program.

All-School 50th Anniversary Kickoff Celebration, hosted by the Benjamin Parents’ The

Association, transformed the Upper School Campus into a remarkable TBS community affair.

Students, faculty and staff, parents, grandparents, alumni, and special guests joined in a multitude of family activities led by event chairs Allison Miller and Karen Sendler, along with their committee of volunteers. The fun-filled Saturday celebration featured a dazzling antique car show, a live band, international foods, and an exciting array of children’s games and activities.

The festivities culminated with a special ceremony on the outdoor stage, including performances by the Benjamin Dazzlers, the upper school chorus and Drumline, and the lighting of the anniversary cake with Head of School Robert Goldberg, school co-founder Nancy Benjamin, and representative members of the school community. Special guests, FCIS President Dr. Barbara Hodges, Palm Beach Gardens Mayor David Levy, and North Palm Beach Mayor William Manuel, offered their well-wishes and proclamations to conclude the magnificent kickoff celebration.

2010 Veteran’s Day Ceremony Honoring Alumni on the Upper School Campus offered tribute to The

30 American veterans seated front court in the campus gymnasium, including special recognition to Army Sergeant Jack Burman ’95, a member of the 82nd Airborne Division and the recipient of the Bronze Star of Valor. The military honorees who served in various branches of the United States Armed Forces included relatives of upper school students, area residents, and TBS faculty and staff. The program, hosted by the Red Cross Club, featured the Presentation of Colors by Dwyer High School’s Jr. ROTC Color Guard Cadets, and performances by the upper school chorus, band, and dance ensemble.

The 15th annual performance produced by Artistic Director Sara Salivar and Variety Show Chair Sherie Katz, featured astounding performances by members of the TBS middle and upper school dance teams, upper school chorus and band, PFP, student/faculty/parent vocal, dance, and instrumental groups, and the lower and middle school cast of The Music Man.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Breakfast got under way The second annual

in the Lower/Middle School gymnasium with a presentation by award-winning journalist and documentary film producer, Mary McDonagh Murphy, author of Scout, Atticus & Boo: A Celebration of Fifty Years of To Kill a Mockingbird. Brad Pazant, TBS director of multicultural affairs, addressed the morning audience, along with featured readings by TBS essay contest winners, second-grader Sierra Robinson, fourth-grader Hannah Foster, and sixth-grader Breezy Leassear.

Performances by middle school dance students and vocalists, seniors Frank Cunningham and Brittany Bigelow, also entertained the audience of middle school students, faculty, parents, school administrators, and community guests.

TBS Family Night at The Gardens Mall showcased a spectacular Grand Court auto exhibit and a display of iconic American brands from some of the leading American fashion designers. Benjamin School guests enjoyed an evening of sliders and milkshakes, balloons, specialty candies, and a guest appearance by superhero, Batman, at the unique event accentuating 50 years of excellence in American automotive and fashion design, and 50 years of academic excellence at The Benjamin School.

Three additional days in the transformed Oasis Room highlighting the school’s 50th anniversary for the community included preschool story time readings by TBS librarian Sherrie Hornaday and cooking demonstrations with samples of nutritious cuisine prepared by alumna Ivy Larson ’94.

Olympics XXI opened on the Lower/Middle School Campus with the traditional March of Countries parading the athletic field and instrumental accompaniment performed by the middle school band. Opening ceremonies included greetings by Head of School Robert Goldberg, followed by Head of Lower School Robyn Quaid, and a vocal duet by eighth-graders Carolina Haddad and Claire Jacobs. Student torchbearers carried the torch for the lighting of the Olympic flame, signaling the announcement of “Let the games begin� to kick off the 2011 lower school field events led by Olympic Day faculty coordinators Cheryl McCluskey and Riordan Cheatham.

BASH Gala – Honoring Tradition, Celebrating Our Future, co-chaired by Susan and Charles Barker, and Sandy and Joe O’Connor, The 2011

brought together more than 320 Benjamin School supporters for a spectacular evening of celebration that raised $972,270 for the school – an extraordinary number! Barbara and John Thomas served as honorary chairs at the 27th annual event held at the Kravis Center.

The Cohen Pavilion was transformed into a stunning venue with striking décor to mirror the 50th anniversary theme. Guests enjoyed an elegant dinner, an exciting live auction, and bid on more than 300 silent auction items. Gala attendees concluded the evening dancing the night away to the electrifying sounds of The Hudson Project.

50th Anniversary Closing Ceremonies on each campus signaled the conclusion of an historic year of The

commemoration for The Benjamin School community. Students, faculty, and staff assembled for morning ceremonies featuring vocal and instrumental selections by the divisions’ performing arts students, as well as closing remarks by Head of School Bob Goldberg, school administrators, and student representatives. Benjamin School artifacts compiled and preserved in a time capsule by Jim Chesnes and his committee of volunteers were presented to division heads Robyn Quaid and Charles Hagy on the Lower/Middle School Campus. Division head Jay Selvig was also presented with a time capsule filled with preserved upper school artifacts. Campus ceremonies concluded with symbolic time capsule enshrinements, assuring the preservation of the first 50 years of excellence at The Benjamin School to be unveiled in 2060 on the anniversary of the school’s centennial year.

The Annual Fund What is the Annual Fund?

As virtually every independent school does, The Benjamin School depends on philanthropic support to keep tuition competitive and to provide the kind of excellence in education that each Benjamin student receives. Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of your child’s education. Benjamin must raise $1.6 million in philanthropic support each year to subsidize the difference between what tuition covers and what it costs to provide the operational resources to support everything from teachers’ salaries to student programming.

Whether you are a parent, parent of alumni, grandparent, or alumnus, the Annual Fund is the best way for you to help us to advance our mission and give a meaningful gift that expresses the value you place on your connection with the Benjamin community. If the Shoe Fits, Wear It! TBS Alumni Return to Teach and More Some alumni who have returned knew in their hearts TBS was the place they would be teaching. Others knew teaching was their future, but where, was the big question.

From the upper school diploma hanging on their walls, to the memories of classmates and friends, a few alumni have felt the lure to return to their alma mater and fill the shoes as Benjamin School teachers, coaches, and administrators.

“I first knew I wanted to become a teacher when I was in 10th grade while reading The Great Gatsby,” said Tiffany Richman Langino, who graduated from Benjamin in 2002. “I came to that realization in the same classroom where I now teach eighthgrade English. The campus looked so similar to the way I remembered it when I began my first day as a TBS teacher.

Many of my old teachers who were so instrumental in shaping the most significant developmental years of my life, were now my colleagues.”

"I knew I wanted to teach but never really thought about the place, specifically,” said Rachel Bergner, who was captain of the upper school dance team her senior year in 2004. She now teaches dance in the Middle School and directs the division’s dance team. “When the opportunity presented itself at TBS, I could not wait to get started!” said Rachel.

Lisa Kerste Arline, a 1968 graduate from North Palm Beach Private School, knew coming back to Benjamin to teach French was the dream job for her. “Yes, I loved the school so much, and I knew I wanted to come back and teach,” recalled Lisa.

“Mr. Benjamin hired me in 1978 and it has been a wonderful, rewarding career. It was thrilling, but daunting to think that I was back at the school where I began my education, where my first teachers had made such an enormous impact on me during the years I was here as a student from kindergarten through the sixth grade.

It was my first teaching job, and I was excited, while at the same time terrified. Mr. Benjamin put me right at ease – he simply told me, ‘Just make it fun!’ ” While some alumni return to Benjamin to teach, others return to coach or share their love for the arts, or become administrators,

like Ryan Smith, the current TBS athletic director who is also a coach for the varsity football team. “The teachers and coaches I had at Benjamin were such good people,” said Ryan, who graduated in 1993. “I remember feeling a great sense of pride to be back, and since that first day, I wanted to make sure students had as terrific an experience as I had when I was a student and an athlete here.”

A few alumni who have returned have ties that run deep and are intertwined into the history of the school. Caron Wissner Martin ’93 not only graduated from Benjamin, but had two parents who taught at the school – her dad, the late Dan Wissner, and her mother, Phyllis Wissner, who has been teaching math at the school since 1979.

“It was like coming back home when I began teaching at TBS,” said Caron, who is currently teaching fourth grade. “I was contemplating returning to TBS as a teacher for many years. Once my kids were in school here, I knew Benjamin was where I wanted to be, too.”

And for Amanda Warner Pierman ‘97, she married into a TBS family. When she married high school sweetheart Jason Pierman ’96, Amanda’s TBS family expanded to include Jason’s siblings, Joe ’87 and Jana ’83, as well as Jason’s mother, Judy Pierman, who taught at the school for over 16 years. Amanda teaches upper

school science, her daughter is in the first grade, and her son will enter the W.O.W. early childhood program in the fall. “It’s truly a family affair,” said Amanda.

There are currently 12 alumni who have returned to Benjamin in some capacity, and each one brings fond memories as a TBS student. All believe it is their aim, like the teachers who taught them, to make each student’s experience at TBS singularly special.

“The late Richard Ridgway is one of my biggest influences for his enthusiasm, fun projects, and love of history,” said Sara

Misselhorn ’91, who tries to emulate the mustached educator in her upper school social studies class.

Cherie Tarek Fromson, assistant director of admission and a 1994 TBS graduate, added, “I have the opportunity to share with prospective students and their parents the history of the school from a former student’s point of view.”

In addition to Tiffany, Rachel, Lisa, Ryan, Caron, Amanda, Sara, and Cherie, alumni Jamie Boykin ‘04, Ami Giurato Reece ‘86, Jimmy Clark ’95, and Jessy Fulford Padon ’01 are also back at

Benjamin. Jamie teaches second grade, Ami is the administrative assistant in the Lower School, and Jessy is the director of alumni relations. She also coaches the varsity cheering squad, along with Tiffany.

Both alumnae were Buccaneer cheerleaders while students at Benjamin.

“As former TBS students, now teachers, coaches, and administrators at our school, we share a common bond with students based on shared memories and traditions,” said Jessy. “Because we have literally walked in their shoes, we are able to offer students a truly unique and valuable perspective. It’s a perfect fit!”

Snapshot on Alumni Mason Rapaport ’85 As a master carpenter and custom furniture maker, Mason Rapaport is constantly in his studio in the college town of Northampton, Mass., building a new and creative piece for his clients. After graduating with a degree in finance from Ithaca College in 1989, Mason pursued his hobby for woodworking as a professional career (rapaportdesigns.com).

“I apprenticed with a master craftsman for six months in Santa Cruz, Calif., to learn the fundamentals and gather ideas,” said Mason, who graduated from TBS in 1985. “I entered a show in San Francisco with my first coffee table and it sold. An editor from a national woodworking publication called me for an interview. That was it, I was in business.”

Mason has since designed numerous artistic pieces for his clients, including renowned chef and restaurateur, Wolfgang Puck. He created drawings and other projects for Microsoft founder Bill Gates’ home near Seattle. His award-winning work has been displayed at numerous furniture and craft exhibitions, and featured in several of the industry’s trade publications. Mason has also served as a juror for the American Craft Council Craft Fair.

Jeanmarie Burigo Connor, M.D., ’97 For pediatrician Jeanmarie Burigo Connor, it all started one day during her TBS senior year in 1997 when she and her classmates had to shadow a professional to gain experience in the “real work world.” It did not take her long to decide what she wanted to do for her senior work project assignment.

“Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a pediatrician,” said Jeanmarie. “I contacted my own pediatrician, Dr. Lynda Bideau, and asked if I could spend two weeks shadowing her. She, of course, said ‘yes’ and that was the beginning of an incredible journey for me.”

After completing her undergraduate degree at Duke University, Jeanmarie went on to earn her medical degree from the University of Florida.

“It is a privilege for me to return to my hometown and take care of the children of Palm Beach County.”

“During my shadowing with Dr. Bideau, I witnessed the fulfillment and satisfaction she experienced with the career she had chosen,” said Jeanmarie of the physician whose children graduated from Benjamin.

“Her patients adored her and the parents of the children she treated looked to her for medical advice, guidance, and compassion. I made up my mind. I wanted to be just like Dr. Bideau someday!”

Fourteen years later, Jeanmarie’s journey has come full circle. This summer, she will be joining Dr. Bideau’s pediatric practice. “It is a privilege for me to return to my hometown and take care of the children of Palm Beach County,” said Jeanmarie.

“And it all started that one day at Benjamin.”

David Watterson ’04 “I’ve had the opportunity to meet and learn from some of the greatest minds solving problems in the world today.”

As a 2011 graduate of the Clinton School of Public Service, David Watterson has fused his passion for music with his calling to public service.

The two-year graduate program with a “real world” curriculum, located on the grounds of the Clinton Library at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, embodies former President Bill Clinton’s vision of building global leadership in civic engagement, and enhancing people’s capacity to work across disciplinary, racial, ethnic, and geographical boundaries.

“I’ve had the opportunity to meet and learn from some of the greatest minds solving problems in the world today,” said David of his educational experience at the nation’s first university to offer a Master of Public Service degree. “We were able to apply what we learned at the school through immersion in international field service projects.”

David established Global Student Summit in Kenya during his 10-week internship under the tutelage of former Benjamin School social studies teacher, Jim Cummings, the founder of Kijana Educational Empowerment Initiative. “The Summit engages high school students in western Kenya with students at Benjamin using cross-cultural dialogue via Skype videoconferences,” explained David, who graduated from TBS in 2004.

“It’s been so satisfying to bring some of my passion and work back to the Benjamin community.”

Here in the United States, David, who earned his undergraduate degree from the Berklee School of Music, has been working on a project with The Center for Music National Service in San Francisco.

The nonprofit organization’s flagship program, MusicianCorps, places musicians, like David, to serve as teachers and mentors in lowperforming public schools, youth centers, and other high-need

community settings. “The aim is to re-engage youth in their academic and civic lives by integrating the strategy of music and service to promote social good,” said David.

In January, David helped host a Day of Song and Service in the Bay Area to celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. “We brought together over 200 students, parents, corporate employees, and community members to learn the classic soul song, Lean On Me,” David said. “In five hours, the group was amazed by their ability to learn and perform the song publicly. It was inspiring to see the power of music bringing people together, putting smiles on their faces and warmth in their hearts.”

With David’s knack for marrying music and public service, the future looks hopeful for rousing smiles and kindling hearts for many more throughout the world.

Catherine Anne Cassidy ’07 Catherine Anne Cassidy, a recent graduate of the University of Central Florida and a class of 2007 TBS alumna, has been riding high since her freshman year as coordinator of the UCF Pegasus mascot program. Two years ago, as a member of the university’s equestrian club, she helped forge a unique partnership between the worldfamous Lipizzaner Stallions traveling show and UCF, to provide a white stallion as the university’s mascot.

The 21-year-old retired gray Andalusian stallion has been portraying UCF’s mascot, Pegasus, since spring 2009. “He entertained on the road with the Lipizzaner Stallions for more than 10 years, was one of the company’s solo star performers, and was often the show lead,” said Catherine.

Catherine has served as the main UCF Knight during her college career, riding Pegasus into Bright House stadium for football games and numerous other appearances on and off campus. Her last rides were during the past football season.

Catherine’s plans, however, are to continue riding high as she joins the traveling Lipizzaner company located in Oviedo, Fla., for the upcoming summer tour.

U.S. Marine Corps Major Brad Flournoy ’91 2 010 D i s t i n g u i s h e d A l u m n u s A w a r d R e c i p i e n t Major Brad Flournoy '91, a graduate of the University of Florida, has earned numerous commendations for his dedicated military service as a Naval and Marine Corps aviator. Brad has served four deployments in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, and several other short-term operations around the world. Brad is the recipient of two Navy Commendation Medals, two Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and nine combat air medals. He is a graduate of the Marine Corps Expeditionary Warfare School and is completing a master’s degree in military and cultural studies from the United States Air Force Command and Staff College. His most recent assignment is working with Special Operations Command to prevent terrorists from gaining control of weapons of mass destruction.

The TBS Alumni Council named Brad its 2010 TBS Distinguished Alumnus and honored him last spring at the annual alumni luncheon.

U.S. Army Sergeant Jack Burman ’95 2 010 Ve t e r a n ’ s D a y A l u m n u s H o n o r e e U.S. Army Sergeant Jack Burman ’95 is a decorated member of the 82nd Airborne Division, and a recipient of the Bronze Star of Valor for his courageous actions during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The military’s letter of commendation on awarding Jack the Bronze Star states: “While serving in Iraq in 2003, Sergeant Burman led his platoon to safe ground while putting his life at risk. All of his platoon members survived because of his courageous actions to stay behind and cover for them as they moved to safe ground.”

The veteran Army officer, who is currently a law enforcement deputy with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Department, was honored November 11 at the TBS 50th anniversary Veteran’s Day ceremony.

Chad Bull, his wife, Mihwa, and their sons, Noah and Joshua, reside in Homestead, Fla. Chad is employed as a supervisory air interdiction agent with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Air and Marine, where he recently supported the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

Chad and his family traveled extensively last year, including an extended stay in South Korea. He will be working in Washington, D.C., this summer.

Anne Landon Fallon, a secondgrade teacher at The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla., has been residing with her husband, Mike, in Ponte Vedra, Fla., for 10 years. The couple’s children, Emily (13), Cindy (10), and Andrew (7), are pictured with their yellow Lab, Rosie.

Jane Hill Lovins graduated from Boston College Law School in 2009 and is serving her second year as a law clerk for the Honorable George A. O’Toole, Jr., of the United States District Court of Massachusetts. She resides in Boston with her husband, Brett, and daughter, Hazel.

Matthew Boykin, a CPA at NextEra Energy Resources, is managing the accounting for the new nuclear plants to be constructed in Miami, Fla. Matthew is also serving a four-year term as an elected supervisor of the Northern Palm Beach County Improvement District. He and his wife, Kristy, reside in Jupiter, Fla.

Shaina Joy Schallop graduated from Georgetown University Law Center with an LLM in taxation and a certificate in estate planning in May 2009. She was admitted to the New York and Florida Bars last year, and now lives and practices in New York City.

Victoria Chappell Harvey, who has been living in Japan for two years, is devoting her expertise to relief efforts following the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that ravaged the country.

Victoria is the civilian in charge of volunteer coordination at the Misawa Air Base.

Kaci Winter Lynch and Michael Patrick Lynch married April 10, 2010, at the Stryker Sonoma Winery in Geyserville, Calif. The couple resides in Santa Monica, Calif., where Kaci works as a consultant.
