With a new grading system introduced by North Harbour Rugby, we were keen to get out on the grass, more so, after Covid-19 disrupted the 2020 season. We had an increase in teams this year, with a dedicated and passionate cohort of coaches and managers who were all set to put in the hard yards and support our players in the best interests of our sport. It was a somewhat challenging start to the season and, where we saw frequent draw changes, we had to adapt to approach and come together more so as a community.

This season exemplified the values of the college where we saw players showing integrity, courage, resilience, pride and excellence on and off the field.

Nataleigh Moe (Rugby Coordinator)

The 2021 1st XV Rugby team was admirably led by the captain Scott Godfrey, who was supported by vice captains Danny Barnet and Tyler Whinney, as well as Luke Tilsley. They led on and off the field by using the team principles from the school crest: strong as our Maunga, grow and change like our Moana and be brave like our Manu. The results were not what the team wanted. However, a strong character and brotherhood grew along with an amazing community and school spirit surrounding the team to witness courageous young men never giving up until the final whistle. Thank you to all who contributed to the jersey in 2021.

Kane Wilson (Head Coach)

After the disruption to last year’s competitions due to Covid-19, the response from prospective players for selection this year was overwhelming, and everyone was fully committed to training and playing. We were fortunate to secure the amazing skills of two experienced coaches, Nick Mulvaney and Craig Hewetson. After 11 rounds of the competition, we were set to play Orewa College in the final. Unfortunately, this game was cancelled because of the lockdown. Special mention must go to Kieran Munro whose leadership skills as captain helped develop and lead the team to second in the league.

Elizabeth McKnight (Manager)

The 2021 season started off a little bumpy for the team with a last-minute assembly and no pre-season preparation. However, the team came together quickly and showed a lot of heart throughout the season. With many first-time players in the team and some key players not in their normal positions some adaption was needed. With many close games and a never give up attitude the boys gave their all on the field consistently. Special mention to all our new first-time players, Brooke, Max, Mason, Mahir, Gary and Thyrhys. And our Long Bay boys Ethan and Ethan. We hope you continue in the next season!

Kieran Squires (Coach)

The Youth 15 team with varying rugby experience came together as a team quickly and enthusiastically under the coaching of dedicated parents Brent Bibbie and Jim Hammond.

The team had a great team culture and played with skill and determination. They had a very successful season, although they found themselves with mixed results finishing mid on the table, they were extremely competitive with most games coming down to the wire with only a try in it. Our closest losses were against the Rosmini teams who were top of the table. A highlight of the season was a huge win against Takapuna Grammar where all the training came together. The future of Rangitoto Rugby is bright with these boys coming through.

Cherie Bibbie (Manager)

The Under 14 Rugby team had a very successful season in terms of development and culture. Whilst results were difficult in the beginning, we ended up winning a lot of games in the second half of the season. The bunch of boys were positive, enthusiastic and a fun group to be involved with. There were some magnificent phases of play where we aimed to have front foot ball and attack from all aspects of the field. This meant that everyone was involved and played and have an important role. It was a pleasure to watch patterns and skills develop as the boys applied themselves positively. Thanks to a great group of parents, an organised manager, Jo Webster, and Mr Wheeler and Mr Lowe for coaching.

Graham Lowe (Coach)

The Premier Girls Rugby team has had a stellar season with incredible results and strong sportsmanship. This year the team’s focus was on working hard even when no one was watching. The girls trained three times a week and played games all over the wider Auckland region. Their dedication paid off, with many successful games, including two incredible performances against Birkenhead College. A highlight was the girls making it to the finals at North Harbour Stadium against Westlake Girls High School. The players put on a great game and came out as the runner ups in the North Harbour Secondary Schools Girls Championship.
