Crews fight Manhattan fourth alarm in the bitter cold

The FDNY battled a four alarm fire in an apartment building in Upper Manhattan as well as temperatures in the low teens on January 23rd. At about 8:15 p.m., companies were dispatched for a kitchen fire at 2440 Amsterdam Ave. at 181st Street, just a couple of doors away from the quarters of Engine 93 and Ladder 45. A 10-75 (all hands) was transmitted for a working fire in a 100

x 200 five story brick OMD. A second alarm was transmitted as heavy fire on the first and second floor on the B/C section of the building. Flames continued up to the third, fourth, and fifth floors prompting a third alarm at 8:46 and a fourth alarm at 9:23 p.m.
Firefighters were able to stop the progress of the fire before it took hold of the cockloft. With wind chills below zero, several minor injuries to firefighters and civilians due to the icy conditions occurred, but no serious injuries were reported. Three alarms in the Bronx On January 27th, FDNY crews were toned to East 135th Street and Walnut Avenue in the Bronx for a fire in a two brick commercial building. They arrived at the paper recycling plant, needing a third alarm for the fire.

Car fire in Brooklyn On February 7th at Bushwick and Flushing Avenues in Brooklyn, Engine 238 and Ladder 108 worked a car fire. The vehicle sustained extensive damage, but no injuries were reported.

Second alarm in Staten Island At 11:18 a.m. on January 17th, Box 2-2 2040 at 136 Lincoln Avenue was struck for a one story taxpayer 20 x 50. Crews arrived to find fire in the basement of a dry cleaners with fire at the meters. The fire extended to exposure four, which was a deli and 4a, a laundromat. Four handlines were stretched and in operation. The fire was knocked down in approximately 40 minutes. One firefighter suffered minor injuries with no injuries to civilians.

One alarm fire in Brooklyn On February 7th, a fire broke out in a three brick at Irving Avenue and Stockholm Street. Crews arrive to find a fire on the second floor and used one hose line to extinguish it.

Truck accident in Queens On January 19, 2013 at approximately 12:30 a.m., FDNY crews were alerted to the Long Island Expressway westbound at College Point Boulevard in Queens for an accident involving two cars and two trucks. Two patients were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Off duty NYPD officer injured in crash in Midwood On February 6, 2013 shortly after midnight, an off duty NYPD officer was involved in a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Nostrand Ave and Ave N in the Midwood section of Brooklyn. Responding units included members of the FDNY and their EMS along with members of the Flatlands Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Members of the Flatlands Volunteer Ambulance Corps treated the NYPD officer, who sustained nonlife threatening injuries while FDNY EMS treated the civilian involved in the MVA. The Flatlands Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported the injured NYPD officer to Maimonides Hospital Medical Center.

Scaffolding collapse in Mill Basin, Brooklyn

On January 20, 2013 at approximately 1:00 p.m., the FDNY responded to a reported scaffolding collapse in the rear of 6161 Strickland Avenue in Mill Basin Brooklyn. FDNY E-323 reported a large piece of scaffolding detached from a very large commercial building known as the Reds warehouse. The scaffolding was leaning against a utility pole with live wires. Con Ed was requested to respond. No injuries were reported in this incident.

Rail car fire in Queens On January 27th, FDNY crews were called to Rust Street and Masbeth Avenue in Queens. They arrived to find a rail car fire and used one line and one tower ladder to extinguish the fire.
On January 22, 2013, FDNY crews were alerted to fire in a three frame at North 7th Street and Bedford Avenue. Firefighters arrived to find fire in the walls on the first floor, fire between the buildings as well as extending to exposure two. There, they found fire on the second and third floors as well as in the cockloft. Crews used five hose lines to extinguish the fire. A small collapse occurred on the top floor and two members were trapped for a short time. They were removed to a local hospital, luckily, only with minor injuries.

Engine Company 210 FDNY HOUSES FDNY HOUSES by Larry Woodcock
Fort Greene, Brooklyn is a neighborhood divided by Myrtle and Lafayette Avenues. Its’ name is derived from a Revolutionary War era fort that was built and named after Nathaniel Greene. The fort once stood in the area that is now Fort Greene Park. Engine Company 210 is located at 160 Carlton Avenue and is another ďŹ ne example of architectural design, synonymous with the times. Well preserved homes and many tree-lined streets make this ďŹ rehouse blend in completely. If not for the red door, it would be easy to miss. The inside was remodeled in 2008 in more of a contemporary motif, with the new house watch and a stainless steel kitchen, but not so much as to rob it of its character. The neighborhood is a designated New York City Historic District. It was also placed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The ďŹ rst park in the borough, Fort Greene Park was ďŹ rst named Washington Park, before being renamed in 1897. It was established as Brooklyn’s ďŹ rst park in 1847 and sits on Dekalb Avenue. The park’s most famous feature, the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument, is a memorial to the more than 11,000 prisoners of war who died in captivity aboard British prison ships during the Revolutionary War. After being moved from a previous site near the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1873, the remains of some who died on those ships are interred in a crypt beneath its base. Fort Greene is also home to the Brooklyn Academy of Music, located on Lafayette Street since 1908. The academy was established in 1861 and receives more than 500,000 people from around the world yearly for its broad array of cultural programs. It was also added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 2006. Back in the 1830’s, Fort Greene was known as the hill and was home to several large farms. When the ferry service linking Manhattan to Brooklyn was opened in 1814, the neighborhood’s population saw signiďŹ cant growth. Farmers began selling their land for development purposes and soon homes were rapidly. One of the early homes belonged to Poet Walt Whitman, who at the time was the editor of the Brooklyn Eagle Newspaper. As Fort Greene’s growth spread, it became the home to numerous professionals living in brick and brownstone row houses,
supporting the prestigious upper middle class. For most of the 20th Century, Fort Greene was a signiďŹ cant destination, but from the 1960’s through the 1980’s it fell on hard times due to citywide crime and drugs with some homes left abandoned. As the 1990’s arrived, so did the restoration, lead by preservationists and professionals to restore it and lobby for its historic district status. This helped further its resurgence and granted the area landmark status in 1984. The neighborhood’s bestknown icon, the Williamsburg Savings Bank is located at Hanson place. The 37 story building was built in 1929 by the architectural ďŹ rm Halsey, Mccormack and Helmer. It was designed with its landmark dome top and vast banking hall, making it one of the most extravagant interiors of any structure in New York City. It has a 63 foot high vaulted banking hall surrounded by limestone and marble mosaics and three story high tinted windows. The ďŹ rst few oors were used as banking ofďŹ ces and the rest were rental ofďŹ ce space. The building has seen different owners and tenants over the years and most notably was sold to a group that included former basketball player Magic Johnson in 2006. It was converted to luxury condominium apartments and declared a landmark in 1977. The building remains as one the most recognizable buildings in Lower Brooklyn and its tallest. Engine Company 10, the Brooklyn Fire Department, was established September 15, 1869 at 160 Carlton Avenue. They became Engine Company 10 in 1898 with the FDNY, when the boroughs merged. In 1899, they changed to Engine Company 110 and temporarily relocated to 189 Vanderbilt Avenue, in 1912, while their current ďŹ rehouse was built. In 1913, they became Engine 210 and moved into their present ďŹ rehouse.

One hurt at Queens all hands On January 25, 2012, a fire broke out at 67th Place and Myrtle Avenue in Queens. Crews arrived at the private home and found fire on the second floor. They used two hose lines to extinguish the fire. One male was removed from the resident and transported to a local hospital for severe smoke inhalation.

Manhole fires in queens On February 11th, FDNY crews were called to 30th Drive and Crescent Street in Queens for manhole fires. They arrived to find four manhole fires with extension to a private home. Heavy smoke was pushing from the manholes and crews were able to contain the fire in the home. The cause is under investigation.
