President Obama visits Staten Island Marine 1 landed at Miller Field in Staten Island with President Obama aboard on November 15, 2012. The president did a flyover over Brooklyn and Queens to survey the damage from Hurricane Sandy. He landed in Staten Island and personally surveyed the damage from the hurricane.
Missing girl found by Ironbound Ambulance EMTs On October 23, 2012, at 5:07 p.m., Ironbound Ambulance EMTs responded to Newark Penn Station after receiving a 911 call of a 56 year old man suffering from chest pain and a headache. When EMS arrived on the scene, the man was accompanied by a 45 year old woman and a six year old child. While in transport to Saint Michael’s Medical Center, EMTs Cristiana Oliveira and Bruno Castanheira noticed that “something was wrong.” The patient seemed “nervous and uneasy” and claimed that he did not want anyone to know where he was being treated. Michael’s Emergency Room, EMT Oliveria began gathering information from the 45 year old woman and six year child. Oliveria quickly noticed discrepancies in both the woman and child’s stories and contacted the New Jersey Transit Police to begin an investigation. It was concluded that the child was abducted earlier that afternoon from the Bronx, NY. She was shortly thereafter reunited with her parents. - ANGELA MUSE

Small fire in residence On December 1, 2012 at approximately 12:34 p.m., crews were called to 60th Place and Linden Street for a one alarm fire. They arrive to find a small fire in a rear wall and used one hose line to extinguish the fire.

Store fire in Flushing On December 5, 2012, fire was in a two story brick commercial 150x200. The fire was located and contained to the first floor store. The fire was declared under control in 30 minutes.

Baby takes smoke in Queens On November 22, 2012, FDNY crews responded to 64th Road and Woodhaven Boulevard for a fire in a seven brick. Firefighters found fire on the second floor and used two hose lines to extinguish it. The all hands were used with one extra engine and an additional ladder. A baby took some smoke and was transported to a local hospital.

Truck 79 Battalion 22 FDNY HOUSES FDNY HOUSES by Larry Woodcock
Before Staten Island became Staten Island, it was known as the borough of Richmond. Prior to 1905, the island’s only ďŹ re protection was provided by volunteers and consisted of 48 companies. As the population was growing, the need for a paid force was essential. On October 1, 1905, the ďŹ rst paid units were organized and occupied former volunteer ďŹ re houses. 1189 Castleton Avenue is home to 79 Truck and the 22nd Battalion. A unique looking ďŹ rehouse and the only one of its kind on the job, it is located in the West Brighton neighborhood of Staten Island on the North Shore. North Shore Truckin was the last wooden Ariel used by the department on Staten Island. West Brighton is one of the oldest neighborhoods on the island and had many name changes throughout the years. Before adopting the current name, it was known as Factoryville. This area of Staten Island was settled by the Dutch in the 1650s. They were then succeeded by the English. In later years, it was populated by Irish and Italians, who immigrated from their respective countries. Today, the neighborhood is populated by numerous nationalities. West Brighton is home to Snug Harbor, a large park with a cultural center, facilities, along with botanical and Chinese gardens. Located on the grounds is the Staten Island Conservatory of Music, which includes a 850 seat music hall as well as the Staten Island Children’s Theater Association, the second oldest in New York City. It was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in March of 1972. The 83 acre estate and grounds were built by Tycoon Captain Robert Randall in 1831 for the sole purpose of caring for old worn out seamen. It opened in 1833 and was the country’s ďŹ rst home for retired merchant seamen. At its peak, about 1,000 retired sailors lived at Snug Harbor. By the 1950s and the demand for housing for old sailors declined, the New York City Landmarks Commission took hold of the property and validated it’s landmark status. Saint Vincent’s Medical Center, which is now known as Richmond University Medical Center, opened in 1903 in what was a 74 bed facil-

ity in a mansion that still stands on the grounds today. As the hospital modernized through the years, the mansion was preserved and stands as a landmark on the property. West Brighton also holds the distinction of having the ďŹ rst grass tennis court and the oldest continually operating cricket club in the
United States. It’s origins date back to 1872. This ďŹ rehouse is the only former volunteer ďŹ rehouse that is currently used by the FDNY. There are two remaining volunteer companies on the island, Richmond and Oceanic with both having their own quarters.
Ladder 79 was organized as Ladder 104 of the volunteer department in October, 1905. They changed over to Ladder 79 in January, 1913 with this as their only location. The 22nd battalion was organized in October, 1905 and were with 207 engine, which later become 157
Engine, on Cottage Place. In November of 1930, they moved in with 79 Truck and have been there ever since. There have been three line of duty deaths in the history of both companies with two occurring in Battalion 22.

All hands in Queens On November 24, 2012 at 95th Avenue and the Van Wyck Expressway in Queens, FDNY crews were alerted to a fire in a two story private home. They arrived to find fire on the second floor and used two hose lines to extinguish the fire.

Car fire in Queens On November 13, 2012, Engine 286 and Ladder 135 were working at a car fire in Queens at Cypress Avenue and Vermont Place. The main body of fire was knocked down quickly.

Two car MVA FDNY crews were called to Gates and Seneca Avenues for a two car MVA on December 2, 2012 at approximately 2 a.m. One minor injury was reported and the patient was transported to a local hospital.

Marine 6 used at Queens warehouse fire On November 22, 2012, crews were called to 53rd Avenue and 11th Street in Queens for a large fire in a vacant commercial building. An outside attack commenced by the FDNY crews, which included three tower ladders with three deck guns. In addition, one of their fire boats, Marine 6, was utilized due to the lack of hydrants in the area.

Stuck in elevator On December 2, 2012 at approximately 1:35 a.m., eleven people were stuck in an elevator at Terrace on the Park in Queens. It took three hours to remedy the situation and no injuries were reported.
Second alarm in Brooklyn Crews were called to Wyckoff Avenue and Himord Street in Brooklyn. The second alarm was called for a fire in the three frame on the third floor. Two hose lines were used to extinguish the fire.

Car versus milk truck in Queens On November 14, 2012, crews were called to Madison Street and Seneca Avenue for a multi-car accident. FDNY firefighters arrived to find a collision between a milk truck and a vehicle. The driver of the car was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Two hose lines in Brooklyn On December 2, 2012 at approximately 5:30 a.m., fire fire broke out in a four brick apartment house in Brooklyn. Crews were called to Irving Avenue and Harmon Street and found fire on the second floor with extension to the third. Two hose lines were used to extinguish the fire.

All hands in East Elmhurst On December 4, 2012 at approximately 12:30 a.m. Queens box 7715 was transmitted for a reported fire in a private dwelling at 24 Avenue and 98 Street in the East Elmhurst section of Queens. Due to the amount of calls, Queens dispatch advised 49 Battalion that he was getting four engines, two trucks, Squad 288 and Rescue 4 on the box.

Engine 316 arrived and tranmitted the 1075 Signal followed closely by the 49 Battalion, who transmitted the all hands, ordering an additional engine and truck to the scene. The fire building was a two and a half story frame, 20x40 with a
peeked roof attached on the exposure 2 side by a similiar structure. The fire was located on the first and second floors with fire out numerous windows on arrival. Four handlines were stretched and three were placed in operation. The fire was declared under control at 1:11 a.m. - FRED BACCHI

All hands in Brooklyn On November 19, 2012, FDNY crews were summoned to Johnson Avenue and White Street in Brooklyn for an all hands fire in a commercial bakery. Two hose lines were used to extinguish the fire.

Queens MVA with pin At 2 a.m. on December 4, 2012, FDNY crews were toned out to the Grand Central Parkway eastbound. According to eyewitnesses, one car left the highway and went into the embankment. The NYPD and FDNY worked together to free the driver. One patient was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Basement fire sends residents into cold On December 4, 2012 at appriximately 8:00 p.m., fire erupted in the basement apartment inside a private house located at 2190 Schenectady Ave just off Ave N in the Flatlands section of Brooklyn. FDNY Ladder 159 was first on scene, saw a good smoke condition from the basement apartment and immediately ordered a 10-75. All hands immediately went to work and a handline was stretched into the basement and knocked down the fire. One FDNY firefighter was treated and transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Members of the Flatlands Volunteer Ambulance were on hand as well. The fire was brought under control in less than 30 minutes.

Eleven transported in Queens On November 20, 2012 a 64th Street and 62nd Avenue in Queens, FDNY crews were requested to the scene of an MVA. Upon arrival, they discovered a small bus and a vehicle had collided. Ten children and the driver were removed and transported to a local hospital for the treatment of minor injuries.

Dispatchers from Illinois assist FDNY dispatchers Five dispatchers from Berwynn, Illinois collected from their coworkers, friends and colleagues to assist twenty FDNY dispatchers, who lost everything as a result of Hurricane Sandy. These kind folks traveled 851 miles and fourteen hours to visit and assist. They planned to stay for three days to visit those affected by the storm. Fay Smyth, union president of the FDNY dispatchers joined with Queens and Brooklyn dispatchers to thank the Illinois dispatchers for all they are doing to help.

First responders with Nathan Norman in Virginia
Road trip to Virginia for a cause There is a story going around about Nathan Norman from Rustburgh, Virginia, who is terminally ill with cancer. Nathan is a six year old boy, who has a dying holiday wish, to be recognized by first responders and emergency personnel. He wants to receive cards and assorted first responder items from them. This story is all over the place and Joseph Scarpinito is a NYC Paramedic, who is a cancer survivor as well. “I decided to load a 15 passenger van up with cards toys and emergency personnel, paramedics, EMT'S etc... and head down to Nathan and be with him to make this little heros wish come true.” Joseph Scarpinito has been in the emergency field since he was

16 years old and he is now going to be 34 years of age and a paramedic, who is also a cancer survivor from stage two lymphoma. When Joseph Scarpinito got the call from his cousin Frank Chiaramonte, who is a new cancer survivor and sits on the board of Directors for the American Cancer Society. Frank asked if he can help Joseph help a little boy, who is battling cancer and may not have much time left. Frank turned to Joseph for his experience and also knowing he is well known in the emergency medical services field. Joseph was delighted he got involved and right away Frank
only asked to gather what we could and mail it to Nathan, but he stated that he was going to go see him. So Joseph said, “tell me when and where and I will fire up my 15 passenger travel van and do a ‘road trip for a good cause’.” When Frank and Joseph came together and Joseph’s partners and co-workers heard what he was doing, they said “count us in”. So, they fired up the van and six paramedics, EMT'S and emergency personnel traveled to visit Nathan. The crew traveled through the night to Virginia with a loaded van of shirts, patches, toys, hats, badges, candy, uniforms, cards, stuffed animals, etc... to make Nathan's wish come true. - STEVE SOLOMONSON

Driver thrown from vehicle A driver was thrown from a vehicle on December 2, 2012 at approximately 4 a.m. Crews arrived to 76th Road and 164th Street in Queens to find a white Charger was speeding down a quiet street and hit five parked cards. He was thrown from the vehicle and sustained serious injuries.
