Another Pasadena Police Officer Charged with Abuse By Terry Miller In a court declaration filed Thursday July 11, a man claims he was kidnapped and beaten by three Pasadena police detectives working a homicide case. Jeremi Carr, 24, identified the detectives as Kevin Okamoto, Keith Gomez and William Broghamer in a complaint sent last week to Phillip L. Sanchez, Pasadena Police Chief . The alleged incidents took place five years ago. The allegations filed by Attorney Michael Kraut, a former District Attorney, claim the officers mentioned above beat Carr in an effort to coerce him into making false statements in a Please see page 3

store….well, that’s another matter entirely. There’s not a lot of ‘free’ parking in Old Pasadena or on South Lake specifically. But what really gets people mad is when you mess with their wheels. To park,or not to park in Pasadena? That is the question. Wherever you go, the enforcement brigade is out there ready to ticket you, or worse, tow your car as was reported in the story by Andre Colemean in the Pasadena Weekly recently. “If you shop at Whole Foods Market in Pasadena, beware. A fleet of tow trucks working for the city’s newly energized parking and vehicle code enforcement bureau is just waiting for people to park illegally — even if only for a few minutes. When that happens — completely outside the ju-

risdictional purview of the Police Department, which typically hears many of the complaints generated by this practice — tow trucks sit poised to swoop in, hook up cars and cart them off to a nearby tow yard. The city Transportation Department, which is now hiking parking fees and aggressively tracking down and towing or booting cars belonging to people with five or more outstanding unpaid parking tickets, is now going after Whole Foods shoppers, many of whom say they are confused by the conflicting parking signs, one warning of being cited and towed after 3 p.m., the other saying two-hour parking is allowed until 8 p.m”. Coleman told his readers. Going back to basics, parking is really sweet sorrow in Pasadena for many of us and even the meters can

tional complaint, to re-open the 2007 complaint and out source the investigation to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept, according to Lt P. Riddle of the Pasadena Police Dept. In an unrelated document, the attorney for the McDade Family, Caree

meeting room revealed nothing. Suddenly I realized I must have left them in the car. Frantically I headed for the parking lot. My wife has scolded me many times for leaving the keys in the ignition. My theory is the ignition is the best place not to lose them. Her theory is that the car will be stolen. As I burst through the door, I came to a terrifying conclusion. Her theory was right. The parking lot was empty. I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car, and that it had been stolen. Then I made the most

difficult call of all, "Honey," I stammered; I always call her honey in times like these. "I left my keys in the car, and it has been stolen." There was a period of silence. I thought the call had been dropped, but then I heard her voice. "Idiot", she barked, "I dropped you off!" Now it was my time to be silent. Embarrassed, I said, "Well, come and get me." She retorted, "I will, as soon as I convince this policeman I have not stolen your car." Yep, It's The Golden Years.

by bill peters Davies, a distinguished award from the French government for his efforts to advance a love of classical music and to acknowledge his work as a Professor of Gerontology and Molecular and Computational Biology at USC. David Martinon, Consul General of France in Los Angeles, announced the award, known as the Chevalier Nationale du Merite to Davies to honor his longterm involvement with both cultural and scientific activities which have benefited France. The award confers the title of “Knight” or Chevalier, to Davies. Davies research has focused on genetic studies of normal aging processes and diseases that afflict the aging such as Parkinson and Alzheimers. In the arts, Davies

is a noted devotee of opera and classical music. It was his work with the CalPhil Foundation, which sponsors several programs to encourage young people to learn about classical music, that led to the presentation at the concert as well as his scientific undertakings. Cal Phil conductor, Victor Vener, also noted that it was July 14, Bastille Day, a noted French historical event. With that, Vener swung to the orchestra, raised his baton, and led the musicians in a rousing version of “La Marseillaise”, the French National Anthem, to a standing and cheering audience. Davies and his wife, Joanna, are residents of San Marino.

After local chiropractor Harrison Darling injured her knee, she thought her running days were over— at least for a while. “I’ve been a runner for 25 years. I have run 2 full marathons and I don’t even remember how many half marathons,” says Dr Darling. “So when the founder of the [Pasadena] Pacers approached me to start up a walking club it was a perfect fit as I needed to rehab my knee and wanted to do some community service.” The Pasadena Pacers is a free running club that was established 16 years ago by Dr Steve Smith, DC. The club meets rain

or shine every Saturday morning at 7am at the picnic tables south of the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center. The walking club meets at the same time and place. Dr Darling has ambitious hopes for the new walking club. “We will eventually have three programs to take our members from ‘couch potatoes’ to half marathoners.” No offense to couch potatoes of course. The first program or “challenge” runs over 12 weeks and takes a participant from couch potato to being able to run a 10K (6.2 miles). The second challenge takes another 12 weeks to go from 10K to

10 miles. And the last challenge takes 12 weeks to go from 10 mile to half marathon. These challenges are open to anyone, and you don’t have to be interested in anything more than walking to participate. The club is in the middle of the first challenge right now, and can add new walkers who want to walk either more or less or who want to join the program where they are. The Pasadena Pacers does not charge any fees so participation is completely voluntary. Donations are accepted. ”As a health care professional, one of my biggest

challenges is getting my patients moving. Walking is a simple exercise that almost anyone can do, it's inexpensive, it's fun and it can have a profound effect on your health.” Dr Darling explains that walking as a group keeps everyone motivated and committed. Interested walkers are invited to show up (look for the group in the red shirts). Wear comfortable clothing, a hat, sunscreen, and bring water. For more information call Harrison Darling, DC at (626) 798-7805 or email her at mydarlingchiro@yhahoo.com. For information about the Pacers, visit Pasadenapacers.org.

Staying Cool this Summer for Seniors The Community Services Department and the Senior Community Commission would like to remind local seniors that during this time of hot weather that they should follow these tips to stay cool and safe. Slow down, avoid strenuous activity. Do not try to do too much on a hot day. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect heat and sunlight and help maintain normal body temperature. Protect your face with a wide-brimmed hat. Drink plenty of water regularly and often, even if

The Doozies

you do not feel thirsty. Attempt to stay hydrated. Stay indoors as much as possible. If you do not have air conditioning, stay on your lowest floor, out of the sun or go to a place where you can get relief from the heat, such as air conditioned, library, theaters and other community facilities that may offer refuge during the warmest times of the day. Electric fans do not cool the air, but they do help evaporate perspiration, which cools your body. Cover windows that receive morning or afternoon sun with drapes, shades, awnings or louvers. Outdoor awnings or louvers

can reduce the heat that enters a home by up to 80 percent. Check on family, friends and neighbors. If you believe you, or anyone you are with, is experiencing a heat-related medical emergency, promptly call 911, and if possible, move to a cooler place. If seniors do not have air conditioning in their homes, the City welcomes seniors to visit one of the following City facilities to stay cool. Hart Park House Senior Center – 222 W. The 2012 Olympics will be in London July 27 – August 12 representing 204 countries, approximately 530 athletes from the United States, 10,500 athletes total, 2100 medals awarded, 5000 accredited staff and 5600 media. Much of the Olympics will be on NBC TV with over 5000 hours of coverage which can be seen for the first time on smart phones, ipads, and other devices. The coverage will double that of the Beijing Olympics! Be ready for some great moments in the London 2012 Olympic Games. Kim Rhodes of El Monte is a bubbly, intelligent Olympian who exudes the confidence of a champion. In our interview she seemed positive about doing well and has been training up to four hours a day with a staff

of very competent people around her, this includes her father, her mother, her husband and other trainers that are getting her ready to break the all time record for medalling in 5 straight Olympics. She also said that she will try to be a part of the 6th Olympics coming up in 2016! Currently she is doing training to strengthen her core muscle groups which are important for a shooter. She also does cardiovascular workouts to improve her endurance. This remarkable athlete has 20-20 vision; very rarely will she miss targets. She was only 16 when she won her first gold medal in the Atlanta 1996 Olympics. This amazing athlete shows tremendous perseverance that is required of all great champions. Having worked

with Olympians over the years she has the quality of a winner. We are especially enthusiastic that she is one of us in the San Gabriel Valley. Look for the shooting events which start on July 28 and continue through August 6. There will be men competing as well as women in these events. A total of 15 medals will be given out to these shooting champions. Kim started shooting at age 10. Her dad was her coach and is still the one that fine tunes her for the Olympic challenge. It’s wonderful to have parents involved in such positive support. Kim has many friends and admirers around the world pulling for her to break the record of medalling in 5 Olympics in a row in a single event like shooting. As an Olympic level coach and trainer for many years, I’ve discovered the secrets that make champions. 1. Have a goal. 2. Have a great team behind you. 3. Stay consistent in your workouts. 4. Eat healthy. 5. Get advice from top professionals that know how to condition you for your sport. 6. Think positively that you can do it. 7. Look to a higher power to give you guidance. Harry Sneider can be reached at 626-355-8964. We’re behind you 100% Kim! Bring Back The Gold!

Special Police Enforcement Tactics Practiced By susan motander

A few weeks ago the Foothills Special Enforcement Team (FSET) was activated when a suspect barricaded himself in his home threatening to kill anyone who came near or to kill himself. After a more than 10hour standoff, the team was able to get the man to surrender without any shots being fired. This sort of effort is not without preparation. Last

week the team held a training session in Monrovia. On Thursday, July 12, FSET met at Clifton Middle School to prepare for various emergencies. The Sheriff’s Department’s helicopter was also involved in the training session. FSET is made up of officers from Monrovia, San Marino, Irwindale, Glendora and La Verne who have received specialized training

(think SWAT Team). The training last week was part of the mandatory 16 hours of training the members of the group completes every month to retain their certification. They train working together so that the members of various departments can work together as a cohesive team. The exercise at the middle school centered on searching the school for armed suspects. The members of the team systematically went through each classroom eventually locating all the suspects. However, in this scenario, they were not as fortunate as they were in reality. “Shots” were fired. Fortunately, no was hurt, although in the humidity of the week made it a rather trying experience for the officers who were in full protective gear.

She currently teaches monthly cooking classes at Village Kitchen Shoppe and is a part-time culinary specialist at Williams-Sonoma. The culinary contest, which will reward food and beverage vendors in multiple categories from the earliest minutes of the event through the final moments, is only one of several new features and activities planned for this year’s Taste of Arcadia. Among the other new features, a strolling magician and the eight-piece LoungeO-Rama band, made up of local JPL and NASA employees. Lounge-O-Rama will play timeless Swing and Big Band numbers early in the evening, moving to classic pop/rock favorites after the sun sets and the dance party starts heating up. And helping with that will be the popular Brazilian Dancers. Arcadia High School’s talented drum line will again greet guests as they enter the gate. Also returning this year is the Roost, a secluded area

adjacent to the main venue that features fine wine tasting in a quieter atmosphere. Taste of Arcadia showcases more than 40 of the best local restaurants, caterers and wine-and-beer vendors. One could not ask for a more idyllic venue than the Arboretum with its lush, green grass, cradled between beautiful water fountains against the picturesque backdrop of the regal San Gabriel Mountains. The community’s signature event draws about 1,000 guests who enjoy the many different foods and tastes of various drinks. Advance tickets are $50 and will be $60 at the gate. You can buy online at: http://arcadiacachamber.org/events/tasteof-arcadia/ or call the chamber office at 626-447-2159. Some Residents Continue to Ask for Monrovia Councilman’s Resignation Despite Councilman Clarence Shaw’s scheduled return to his council post is this fall, Mike Vallejo ( a vocal opponent and neighbor of Larry Spicer) told the Monrovia City Council Tuesday evening that he felt interim councilmember Spicer should be taken off the council immediately. Vallejo told council members that he was one of many who did not accept Spicer’s apology at last council meeting, “ there’s no excuse for his kind of bullying.” Vallejo also addressed

those who supported Spicer saying “you should be ashamed of yourselves.” Vallejo refered to the Child Abuse Prevention Month which Monrovia supported a while back and claimed such support ironic ,considering Spicer’s background and criminal record that was published in this newspaper and other media. Two other members of the public spoke up Tuesday asking for council to reconsider Spicer’s position on council. One said there is no acceptable

excuse for Spicer to invoke his military background in his apology. He also read a letter from another opponent to Spicer’s appointment. Vallejo added that “he’s done with Spicer.” The neighbor of the interim councilmember said he has been in touch with Monrovia Police Dept., and has been assured that any neigborhood disputes will handled immediately through the community policing program.

Sierra Madre Cops File Another Complaint Michael McGill, attorney for Sierra Madre Police Officers Association, has filed a complaint with a state oversight board saying member officers have been denied holiday pay by the city. The complaint alleges the city paid only half the

holidays hours officers should have received in fiscal year 2011-12. The city received the complaint at the end of June according to Elisa Weaver, Sierra Madre Public Information office . The city has 30 days to respond.

Weaver said the POA claims the city improperly imposed holiday pay agreements. Weaver said “We disagree.” As of July 1, Weaver says the Police Officers receive 104 hours of holiday pay.

Pub Crawl Set to Benefit MAFA By Susan Motander The Monrovia Association of Fine Arts, with the assistance of the Merchants of Old Town Monrovia is holding a “Pub Crawl” along Myrtle Avenue in conjunction with their art “Stroll Along the Avenue” on Saturday, July 28th from 5 – 9 p.m. In addition to the live music and art we have all come to appreciate

Continued from page 1

Given the emphasis on The Association and their reprise of songs of a by-gone era, the evening took on the patina of a Summer camp or family outing where some of Dad's old friends got up and sang songs from their youth, and camp director Vener told ghost stories. Vener regaled the audience with tales of the composers, but mostly about Hector Berlioz' drug deliriums and his furious difficulties with life and love, mentioning as a side issue The Association's drug use (which they acknowledged on stage) and their first hit song, "All About Mary" (wink-wink, that means marijuana). The Association brought to the stage a vague sort of rock-concert ambiance to their appearance. They ambled on-stage, tuned a bit, talked to each other, giggled a bit, then struck up the first of their seven hit tunes, "Windy". Leader, Russ Giguere, now 69 years-old, and his cohorts, of similar years, retains a nice voice, though rougher than his youthful baritone, and the others, Jim Yester, Larry Ramos (joined by drummer Bruce Pictor, guitarist, Jules Alexander, Jordan Cole on keyboard and Del Ramos, bass guitar) still know their close harmony. The crowd was responsive to each number—even recognizing the introduction to numbers, some

Cal Phil singing along. The Terry Kirkman tune "Cherish" turned out the be the best of the set as they found their stride in the smooth-voiced, smooth-harmony style they brought to the fore in their heyday at Pasadena and Glendale's Ice House. The arrangements performed were backed by the Cal Phil orchestra, but the largely unbalanced sound system left them so far in the background as to be mostly unheard. Neither the sound system, which was treble-peaked at one end and bass-y at the other, was friendly to the orchestra string section, nor was the dampness that created string fluctuation leading to raggedness throughout the evening. That did not deter the musicians from turning in startlingly fine work, including oboist Francisco Castillo, clarinetist Michael Arnold, flutist Jamie Pedrini, bassoonist Allen Savedoff, and the bass section which was superb in the "Symphonie fantastique". Vener selected heavily pictorial music for the classical numbers, all of which are movingly strong. He led the orchestra in Glinka's "Ruslan and Ludmilla" overture at a nice, but standard tempo (he said he would set a speed record: he didn't); a spirited Williams' "Olympic Fanfare"; an uneven account

of Strauss' "Don Juan", sections of the performance that varied from unclear episodes to wonderful depth and personality; and finally a determined reading of Berlioz' "Symphonie fantastique" by Vener that kept the tension tightly moving. The event, hosted by Santa Anita Park, offers spectacular views of the San Gabriels, and the facility's amenities. The video-screen coverage was marred by technical difficulties throughout the evening but even if there had been no camera/ transmission struggles, it was clear the cameraman had no clue to the music. He never found the bassoon, one of the major components of the Berlioz work. The constantly searching camera was a distraction. Attendees took full advantage of the Cal Phil and Santa Anita Park offerings: trams from the parking lot to the Festival area, food court selections, and during intermission, standing in long lines to meet members of The Association, who willingly signed autographs, and to purchase CDs or memorabilia. The next California Philharmonic Orchestra presentation will be Saturday, July 28 at Santa Anita Park and Sunday, July 29 at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

McDade Attorney

Opinion

Conway Asks SGVCOG for Financial Aid Despite Felony Charges Are You Kidding Me? By Terry Miller San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments Executive Director Nick Conway, who was recently arrested and charged with multiple felonies, has reportedly made a unique request that the agency pay his legal defense against the conflict of interest charges while head of the SCVCOG, this according to a report in the Pasadena Star News. The DA's Office alleges Conway's personal business gained financially from contracts and grants obtained for the SGVCOG, amounting to a serious conflict of interest. Interestingly enough, as The Sierra Madre Tattler points out, it seems Conway has at least one fan in the publisher of THE Magazine, Steve Tobia. On Sunday, Tobia went on and on in an ad-

vertising vehicle called “The Insider” which is inserted with The Pasadena Sun, which is, in turn, inserted in Sunday’s LA Times . Tobia’s editorial said Conway’s story is “local political assassination”. Tobia went as far as to say “Everyone should question the TRUE intent of his (Conway’s) recent political assassination.” Tobia then goes on to say the US and State Attorney should probe the Public Integrity Division. Strong words indeed. John Crawford, publisher of Sierra Madre Tattler, has long been a foe of SGVCOG and although this newspaper hasn’t always agreed with The Tattler, on this one Crawford is RIGHT ON…100%. Here’s a clip from Wednesday’s terrific Tattler piece which refers di-

rectly to Tobia’s argument in defense of this Conway chap. “There are a couple of flaws in Steve's ( Tobia’s) argument, at least in my opinion. Nick was hardly an outsider at the SGVCOG. He was instead for many years its very large and in charge Executive Director. Steve never even mentions the term "Executive Director" in his screed. Plus that evil cabal of politicians Tobia refers to as the "Board of Directors" have actually been Nick's most vociferous supporters at The COG. Some of whom are actually attempting to arrange payments out of The COG's own insurance policies to help Nick out with his legal bills. Steve Tobia's colorful assertions of vast conspiratorial plots in the Conway Caper aside, I do have a

question. Why in the world does Tobia care about this guy? There are some vague allusions to Caltrans and how that organization separately impacted the lives of Nick and Steve, but most of what is referred to in the article is terribly lacking in both detail and substance. Why Steve believes Nick is the victim of a "Political Character Assassination" is never fully explained. So here is today's question. What does Nick Conway really mean to Steve Tobia? The Tattler wants to know.” Well done Tattler, we’d like to know too. Send us your letters, opinions , rants or raves about SGVCOG and Conway’s attempt to get financial assistance to defend his felony charges.

except the McDade matter. In the “El Sereno 3 matter, Gomez charged one of the youths that were beaten with attempted murder on an officer, and Gomez was listed as the “victim”. Gomez was accused of falsifying a police report and threatening to beat them up is they did not say what he wanted during the interview. Gomez and other members of the then entitled, “Black Gang Intelligence Unit” repeatedly “harassed and threatened the youths and at one point I personally walked them into the police department to make personnel complaints about the harassment- to no avail,” Harper states in a document filed Monday July 16 in Opposition to Defendents’ Motions. In the document filed Monday, Harper said “I am informed and believe that Defendant Gomez intimidated and threatened Jeremi Carr, an African American male, conspired in a battery of Carr with his former partner Det. Okamoto (who is now on administrative leave). I am informed and believe that Det. Gomez shot killed Mr. Carr’s cousin, Maurice Clark, and Gomez used that fact to intimidate Carr and try to get him to lie about and unrelated case.” Harper continues “I am informed and believe Gomez, who is now being investigated by the Sheriff’s Department, has used and continues to use the fact that he has gotten away with killing and battering Black males while on the “Black Gang Intelligence Unit” and after in order to obtain completely false or partially false confessions and to procure false witness statements. I believe he did so with the minor this case wherein his tape-recorder conveniently stopped working for 25 minutes. “ Harper represented the “Minor” in juvenile criminal

court where he was initially charged with the murder of KENDREC McDADE on March 25, 2012. Harper said “I believe Gomez used this charge as an improper tool to attempt to gain information to provide the Chief and City spokespersons untrue and tarnishing information about Kendrec, and to aid in the conspiracy to blame the unarmed victim for being shot and killed.” Caree Harper also said she believes Gomez lied in the McDade police report; intentionally turned off the tape-recorder to threaten the minor, and intentionally withheld witness information from defense counsel to aid and conspire with the shooting officers, the Chief and any “Doe” defendant that may be added. “I believe said acts were to stall defense investigations and to incriminate the decedent in criminal activity thereby tarnishing victim McDade and justifying the shooters actions.” The motion continues “Defendant Det. Gomez is the proverbial: “Rollo Tomasi”- the one who gets away with it, and his supervisors count on it. The multiple specific instances are necessary to aid me in proving up the Section 1985 conspiracy theory, the Monell allegations, and the Chief’s negligence for retaining this officer; failing to retrain this officer, and the Chief’s continuing act of negligence for keeping him on the street, to date, and allowing him to play such a major role in Pasadena’s most controversial shooting in years.” “To dismiss Det. Gomez out of this litigation would be unjust, especially before additional discovery can be conducted, protective orders can be lifted and his role at the scene and at Huntington Hospital the night Kendrec McDade expired can be determined.” Harper said in the motion.

Governor Brown Directs Additional Firefighting Resources to Wildfires Edmund G. Brown Jr. directed additional state resources deployed to assist in fighting wildfires burning throughout northern California. A highly trained CAL FIRE Incident Management Team is now coordinating the attack on the 1,157 acre “Robbers Fire” in Placer County. The wildfire is burning three miles northwest of the community of Foresthill and was only 10% contained as of Friday morning. Officials say 150 residences are threatened and 1,368 personnel are assigned to try and get the upper hand on the fire. “We’ve had a brief reprieve from large fire activity the last two years,” said Chief Ken Pimlott, director of CAL FIRE. “But the exceptionally dry winter has set the stage for a more active fire season this year and we’re seeing fire activity now that we would typically not see until late August.” Governor Brown also directed the California National Guard to activate five specially equipped UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters

and trained guard personnel to assist state and local firefighters as well as emergency management and mutual aid resources available through the California Emergency Management Agency (Cal EMA). “The California Military Department is supporting CAL FIRE and CAL EMA to provide critical resources and personnel to protect the residents affected by these wildfires,” said Maj. Gen. David S. Baldwin, Adjutant General, California Military Department. “We are prepared to provide additional support and stand ready wherever and whenever we are needed,” he said. Significant fires are burning in three northern California counties - Placer, Trinity and Colusa Counties and have burned over 30,630 acres, destroyed at least 5 structures and displaced hundreds of residents. Cal EMA has deployed 23 mutual aid strike teams comprised of firefighting equipment and personnel from around the region. A total of 150 engines and

approximately 469 personnel are deployed as a part of these state-coordinated strike teams. They join hundreds more local firefighters in impacted areas. “Our hearts go out to those impacted by these wildfires,” said Secretary Mark Ghilarducci of the California Emergency Management Agency. “We know how important it is to have a quick, coordinated response to these disasters and that’s what our team has been focused on around the clock,” he said. “We’re working closely with the other agencies and keeping a close eye on the rest of the state as the hot weather and winds pose additional challenges.” Ghilarducci stressed that residents near these wildfires should pay close attention to information and direction from local authorities in case additional evacuations are necessary. located at 225-245 W. Sierra Madre Boulevard. But the City Council has much business remaining on the project, continuing the public hearing to Tuesday, Jul. 24, when members plan to vote on the Specific Plan, the Text Code Amendment to the Municipal Code, as well as the project’s Conditional Use Permit. However, some residents who attended last week’s meeting on Jul. 10 plan to pick up where they left off at public comment - especially because the Kensington is anything but a done deal. Not only are people concerned that the council must abide by the law by placing the Measure V amendment on the ballot, but residents want to ensure its proper language. Residents are still wary of bureaucratic impasse that may return to questions such as whether the Kensington is Measure V compliant or whether an amendment to the measure actually needs to go to the people for a vote. During last meeting’s public hearing former Sierra Madre Mayor Kurt Zimmerman expressed his frustration with city staff’s interpretation of Measure V, which claimed the initiative’s density limits do not apply to the Kensington because its rooms do not have kitchens. “Neither the letter nor the spirit of Measure V support such an error in interpretation,” Zimmerman said. “Indeed, to find otherwise would conflict with the intent of the voters as articulated in Measure V’s findings: preserve the small town character in down-

town Sierra Madre and afford those same voters with a say on major decisions affecting their downtown.” Citizens are well beyond these questions, and they expect to keep the council on track, saying, unequivocally, that the Kensington does not meet Measure V’s density requirements. “This project demands to go to the vote of the people,” said resident Gary Hood. “Mr. Shields, who is with the Kensington group, has even asked in a letter to have this project put onto the Nov. 6 ballot. Anything short of letting the people vote on Measure V will definitely cause legal action and a delay that will be costly to all parties concerned.” Debbie Sheridan explained the importance behind a Measure V vote: “We citizens of Sierra Madre worked hard to get the truth to the residents against nearly $200,000 put up by the ‘No on Measure V’ people who predicted dire consequences if it passed,” she said. “Andy Griffith died last week. Let’s keep our version of Mayberry alive.” Another resident, who said she has followed the assisted living project since its first presentation over a year ago, vocalized her discontent over the project’s lack of headway. “This project has been like a moving target,” said Leslee Hinton. “It’s like playing whack-a-mole: its suites vs. dwelling units, and its institutional vs. commercial, and its kitchens and its garbage disposals; but what it comes down to is a proposed project, as I am hearing from the council now, that does not comply with Measure V because it

does not meet the density requirements.” Pat Alcorn said the answer was simple. “No matter what you label the rooms: suites, dwelling units or bedrooms, it’s clear that density does not conform to Measure V,” she said. “I fully support this project, and let’s get the show on the road!” Former Mayor MaryAnn MacGillivray thanked Shields and his associates for their willingness to work with the community on the ballot language for the Measure V amendment. “It’s just too bad we couldn’t have truncated this long ago,” she said. “Taking those parcels out and giving them exception was discussed as far back as when Mr. Shields first asked for a resolution to put this on the ballot, and we have extended it this far.” Shields, the last to speak at the public hearing on Jul. 10, accepted both residents’ active discretion and vocal support for his project. “All of this is about density, and we acknowledge that,” he said. “This is not a traditional project. Once we get pass the density, it’s easy to get excited about being able to bring something to the community after hearing some of the personal testimonies of people who have dealt directly with the needs that assisted living can bring.” The next Sierra Madre City Council meeting takes place 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jul. 24, at the City Council Chambers, 232 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. The meetings are also televised on local cable television on Channel 3. For more information, visit the city’s website at www. cityofsierramadre.com.

NASA’s Car-Sized Rover Nears Daring Landing on Mars NASA's most advanced planetary rover is on a precise course for an early August landing beside a Martian mountain to begin two years of unprecedented scientific detective work. However, getting the Curiosity rover to the surface of Mars will not be easy. "The Curiosity landing is the hardest NASA mission ever attempted in the history of robotic planetary exploration," said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "While the challenge is great, the team's skill and determination give me high confidence in a successful landing." To achieve the precision needed for landing safely inside Gale Crater, the spacecraft will fly like a wing in the upper atmosphere instead of dropping like a rock. To land the 1-ton rover, an airbag method used on previous Mars rovers will not work. Mission engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., designed a "sky crane" method for the final several seconds of the flight. A backpack with retrorockets controlling descent speed will lower the rover on three nylon cords just before touchdown. During a critical period lasting only about seven minutes, the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft carrying Curiosity must decelerate from about 13,200 mph (about 5,900 meters per second) to allow the rover to land on the surface at about 1.7 mph (three-fourths of a meter per second). Curiosity is scheduled to land at approximately 10:31 p.m. PDT on Aug. 5 (1:31 a.m. EDT on Aug. 6). "Those seven minutes

are the most challenging part of this entire mission," said Pete Theisinger, the mission’s project manager at JPL. "For the landing to succeed, hundreds of events will need to go right, many with split-second timing and all controlled autonomously by the spacecraft. We've done all we can think of to succeed. We expect to get Curiosity safely onto the ground, but there is no guarantee. The risks are real." During the initial weeks after the actual landing, JPL mission controllers will put the rover through a series of checkouts and activities to characterize its performance on Mars, while gradually ramping up scientific investigations. Curiosity then will begin investigating whether an area with a wet history inside Mars' Gale Crater ever has offered an environment favorable for microbial life. Curiosity will use tools on a robotic arm to deliver samples from Martian rocks and soils into laboratory instruments inside the rover that can reveal chemical and mineral composition. A laser instrument will use its beam to induce a spark on a target and read the spark's spectrum of light to identify chemical elements in the target. Other instruments on the car-sized rover will examine the surrounding environment from a distance or by direct touch with the arm. The rover will check for the basic chemical ingredients for life and for evidence about energy available for life. It also will assess factors that could be hazardous for life, such as the radiation environment. "For its ambitious goals, this mission needs a great landing site and a big payload," said Doug McCuistion, director of the Mars Ex-

ploration Program at NASA Headquarters. "During the descent through the atmosphere, the mission will rely on bold techniques enabling use of a smaller target area and a heavier robot on the ground than were possible for any previous Mars mission. Those techniques also advance us toward humancrew Mars missions, which will need even more precise targeting and heavier landers." The chosen landing site is beside a mountain informally called Mount Sharp. The mission's prime destination lies on the slope of the mountain. Driving there from the landing site may take many months. "Be patient about the drive. It will be well worth the wait and we are apt to find some targets of interest on the way," said John Grotzinger, MSL project scientist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. "When we get to the lower layers in Mount Sharp, we'll read them like chapters in a book about changing environmental conditions when Mars was wetter than it is today." "Technology is making it possible for the public to participate in exploration as it never has before," said Michelle Viotti, JPL's Mars public engagement manager. "Because Mars exploration is fundamentally a shared human endeavor, we want everyone around the globe to have the most immersive experience possible." For information about the mission, and to use the new video game and other education-related tools, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/mars and http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/ msl/ .

Temple Station - Crime Trends

VOTE NOW! VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE SAN GABRIEL VALLEY BUSINESSES IN OUR ANNUAL READERS’ CHOICE AWARDS

WIN GREAT PRIZES!

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Temple Station is responsible for providing law enforcement services to the cities of Bradbury, Duarte, Rosemead, South El Monte and Temple City, as well as the unincorporated county communities of South San Gabriel, El Monte, Monrovia, Arcadia, Duarte (M.A.D.), East Pasadena, and North San Gabriel. Below you will find a summary of the reported crimes during the month of June for each of the above listed communities. During this past month, we are pleased to report a decrease in most of our theft related crimes in the majority of our communities. Although there is not one particular reason for this result, I would like to believe the partnership fostered between the community and law enforcement has a hand in it. Concerned citizens

call daily providing valuable information which on occasion can lead to the immediate arrest of an individual. We must continue and be mindful to watch over our senior citizen family members and neighbors. This segment of the population is susceptible to trickery and day time burglaries. Help educate and advise them that not all persons are honest and will pose as utility or city workers, who asked the victims for access into their residences to inspect water pressure, electrical lines, or other utility service related areas. If contacted by any individual who asks to enter your residence to conduct an inspection, request to see official identification. If you have any doubt as to whether or not the individual is working for a legitimate utility company or agency, please call Temple Station immediately. We

also ask that you monitor your neighborhood for suspicious vehicles or persons walking door to door. If you notice something or someone suspicious, again please telephone Temple Station and ask for a patrol unit to respond. Vehicle thefts are also a main area of concern. Thieves continue to targetHondas, model years 1998 through 2006. Please remember to lock and secure your vehicle, taking all valuables with you. This includes laptop computers and navigational equipment. Remember, prevention and deterrence starts at home. Temple Sheriff’s Station’s partnership with community members is our strongest asset in the fight against crime. Please remain vigilant, and if you see something or someone suspicious, call Temple Station at (626) 285-7171 or in cases of emergency, dial 911.

Ask Dr. Sarkar MD Question 2: I have been exercising 30-40 minutes 4-5 times a week for the last 3 months, but I haven’t lost any weight and I am frustrated. Why is this happening? L.M., Arcadia, CA Answer: To lose weight you have to have a negative net calorie intake, which means that you have to take in less calories than your body needs. Your caloric intake is determined by the Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), which is determined by using a calorimeter or calculated by using a formula which takes one’s height, weight and age into account. Using the RMR, you can determine your daily calorie intake. If you exceed your calorie intake then you will gain weight, take in less than the required calories, you will

lose weight. Of course, exercise helps burn up calories and so if one takes their required number of calories and then exercises (burn up calories) then they will have a net negative calorie intake and will lose weight. However it is important to remember just how many calories are burned with exercise. Aerobics burns up 2.7 calories/minute, while jogging burns up 3.18 cal/min. So if you jog for 30 minutes a day, you will burn up about 100 calories. Exercise is also important for toning one’s body and for cardio-vascular and general health. For the average person 30 minutes of exercise 4-5 times a week is usually enough. If you are completely out of shape

and haven’t exercised in years, start by walking 15 minutes a day and work your way up to the goal. Incorporate more activity into your daily life. Take the stairs, park far away and walk. Get a pedometer, wear it all day and count the total number of steps you take daily. Your goal should be to work up to 10,000 steps a day. Dr. Sarkar MD is a Board-Certified physician in Pasadena, CA specializing in Weight Loss Medicine. You can e-mail your weight-loss questions to him at: info@pasadenaweightlossmd.com and he will answer them in this column. For more information visit www.pasadenaweightlossmd.com.

Authorities Seek to Expand Collaboration to Identify Trafficking Cases in Both Countries More than 100 representatives from the government and private sectors, including high-level law enforcement representatives from the U.S. and Mexico, convened in Los Angeles Thursday for a binational summit to strategize on ways to enhance existing efforts to combat human trafficking in both countries. The daylong conference, organized by U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Mexican Consul General in Los Angeles, focused on ways the U.S. and Mexico can work more closely together to detect trafficking activity and prosecute suspected perpetrators. Featured speakers included Nelly Montealegre Diaz, who oversees the Mexican Attorney General’s special prosecutions unit involving crimes of violence against

women and human trafficking. “For everyone at this week’s meeting, combatting human trafficking is a top priority, but despite that, we believe a significant number of trafficking cases continue to go undetected,” said Claude Arnold, special agent in charge for HSI Los Angeles. “The goal of the summit was to share ideas on further steps we can take together to bolster efforts to prevent this reprehensible crime.” “No human being deserves to be trafficked, abused or exploited,” said David Figueroa, the consul general of Mexico in Los Angeles. “We must not allow our borders to be barriers in the ongoing effort to combat this problem. Our shared goal is to achieve a society free of human trafficking and human smuggling.” Topics covered during

the conference included an overview of current human trafficking investigative strategies in both the U.S. and Mexico. Representatives from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles and the Mexican Attorney General’s Office discussed case prosecutions. Other speakers detailed the current services available to assist trafficking victims and the vital role such support plays in these cases. Conference organizers say the meeting was very productive. Participants agreed to look for ways to expand the existing information sharing between the two countries on human trafficking cases. Beyond that, the discussions resulted in a renewed commitment by both countries to seek new and innovative ways to collaborate on human trafficking enforcement efforts.

Recycle Used Oil & Filters! Do you change your car’s motor oil? Did you know that used motor oil and oil filters are recyclable? Used oil can be re-refined or processed into new motor oil. Currently only 46% of used motor oil is being recycled, which means 20 million gallons may be illegally entering California’s waterways via stormwater systems, posing a great risk to the environment. One gallon of used oil can contaminate a million gallons of drinking water; polluting our waterways and threaten fish and aquatic life. Prevent pollution; recycle used motor oil and filters! You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The total amount of the unpaid balance with interest thereon of the obligation secured by the property to be sold plus reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $474,649.81. It is possible that at the time of sale the opening bid may be less than the total indebtedness due. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept cashier’s checks drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state. Said sale will be made, in an ‘’AS IS’’ condition, but without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to satisfy the indebtedness secured by said Deed of Trust, advances thereunder, with interest as provided, and the unpaid principal of the Note secured by said Deed of Trust with interest thereon as provided in said Note, plus fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. If required by the provisions of section 2923.5 of the California Civil Code, the declaration from the mortgagee, beneficiary or authorized agent is attached to the Notice of Trustee’s Sale duly recorded with the appropriate County Recorder’s Office. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-281-8219 or visit this Internet Web site www.recontrustco.com, using the file number assigned to this case TS No. 12-0003181. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. RECONTRUST COMPANY, N.A. 1800 Tapo Canyon Rd., CA6-914-01-94 SIMI VALLEY, CA 93063
