End of an Era – Colonial Pharmacy in Arcadia Succumbs to Difficult Economy By Terry Miller
C
olonial Pharmacy is unquestionably Arcadia's oldest pharmacy and has been serving the community since 1939. Sadly, the time had come for Arcadia’s oldest purveyor of prescriptions and such to close its doors. Colonial Pharmacy was quite literally, the corner pharmacy where you could really talk with friendly, knowledgable staff and pharmacists…a pharmacy where everyone knew your name and you weren’t just a number. Owner Mark Burstyn has worked at Colonial Pharmacy since October 1990 and purchased the pharmacy 1999 from George Sanders. Burstyn kept the character and ambiance of Colonial and was one of only a handful of truly independent pharmacies in the San Gabriel Valley. Jack Scott to Retire as Chancellor State Community College System

The chancellor of California Community Colleges is slated to retire as head California’s state college system. Former State Senator Jack Scott has announced he’ll step down on Sept. 1, after nearly six decades in higher education and public service. Since becoming chancellor in January 2009, Scott has helped the 112-campus community college system weather deep cuts in state funding that led to fee
increases, course cuts and reduced enrollment. The 78-year-old Scott has also focused on making it easier for community college students to transfer to the University of California and California State University systems. Scott spent 12 years in the state legislature, where he chaired the Senate Committee on Education. Prior to this, Scott served as president of PCC and Cypress College.

Dorothy's Place Finish the Chores?
By Dorothy Denne When I used to complain that I didn't have time to get all my chores done, my father-in-law would always remind me, "That's all right Dorothy, you don't want to finish your chores. When they are done, so are you." He finished his chores in 1978. I miss him still and think of him often. We would sometimes laugh together at things not everyone found laughable. I received a photocopy recently of a cartoon I know would have evoked a chuckle from him. It shows a harried, frazzled looking woman
with crossed eyes and turned down mouth. The side caption reads, "God put me on Earth to accomplish a certain number of things...right now I'm so far behind I will never die." He would approve of that. I love cartoons. Perhaps that is part of why I am behind. I'm always taking time to cut one out to send to someone or running out to copy the one that someone sent to me then send it on to another. That usually calls for more time to sit down and write a little note to update our lives. I consider that as time well spent but it does mean delaying some other chores. Now and then I reach that point of being behind that calls for making lists and prioritizing. I make a column for things that Must be done right away, one for things that Should be done soon and
one for things to do Whenever I get to them. The columns are all rather long. Then sometimes a friend calls and wants to do something really fun or relaxing but definitely time consuming. I groan and look at my lists. There are bills to pay and much cleaning to do, laundry, and errands to run, a button to sew, a hem to repair, calls to make and more. I see myself as the frazzled gal in the cartoon. I begin to shift jobs from one column to the other. Finally the Must Do column is quite manageable, the Should Do produces a fleeting moment of guilt and the When I Get To It just grows and grows. I tell my friend I'll meet her at noon. My father-in-law was right. I'm in no hurry to get my chores done.

With over 20 years of experience as a CFO, Grigg returns to the Los Angeles area, where he started his career at Deloitte & Touche. “We are very fortunate to have such a talented executive join our team,” said President and CEO Dan F. Ausman. He previously was executive vice president and chief financial officer for the Southcoast Health System (SHS) in New Bedford, Mass., where he was responsible for the financial operations of three
acute care hospitals, ambulatory centers and physician groups with revenues totaling over $650 million. Grigg received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting from Brigham Young University and is a Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association. He is a hometown boy who grew up in the La Canada area and attended La Canada High School. He is married with four daughters, one son and one granddaughter.
Tyler Perry Strikes a Different Tone in His Latest Directorial Effort Film Review By Michael James Gonzalez Tyler Perry’s latest film is a refreshing departure from his ‘Madea’ films and family melodramas. First, we have Perry as debonair leading man; second, we have a film that is somber, philosophical, and even political, with its focus on class differences. “Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds” centers on Wesley Deeds (Perry), an old-money, San Francisco CEO who has inherited not only millions of dollars but every aspect of his privileged life, which he feels is not his own. Out of a sense of duty toward his widowed, domineering mother (Phylicia Rashad), Deeds heads the family’s computer corporation while enduring his jealous, crazy brother Walt (Brian White) and stuck-up fiancé
(Gabrielle Union). He eats the same thing every day, keeps a rigorous schedule, and is always cool, calm, and collected. But Deeds’ sanitized world quickly begins to crack when he bumps into Lindsey (Thandie Newton), a homeless but strongwilled single mother who works as a housekeeper in Deeds’ own building. Of course, Deeds determines to help Lindsey, and while doing so, a romance begins to blossom between them, prompting Deeds to reevaluate his life, which inevitably leads to the conflicts that arise from a one-percenter mixing with someone from the 99 percent. The film is shot with glossy, Hollywood stock, and every scene is lit like
a magazine cover, which gives it the dreamy quality Perry no doubt was going for. All other cinematic aspects, however, seemed amateurish, especially Perry’s heavy use of close-ups on himself—yes, we understand the character is contemplative— and certain scenes of dialogue run far too long, which bring the pace of the film to a crawl at times. The film is Perry’s best as far as themes go—the importance of appreciating your significant other, the disparate attitudes between the rich and the poor, and pursuing your dreams despite outside resistance—but I yet look forward to a Tyler Perry having a good message as well as good filmmaking.

Dominic Lazzaretto will take over as Arcadia’s new city manager on March 26, having been appointed to the position by the City Council last month. He replaces Don Penman who retired last November after 14 years with Arcadia, the last four as its City Manager. Lazzaretto comes to his new post from La Palma, a city he describes as “not unlike Arcadia, just smaller.” There he was City Manger for over five and a half years of the nine he worked for that city. He started as an interim planner there in 2002 and worked up to being its Community Development Director and then City Manager. LA Palma is a community of approximately 15,500 people in Northern Orange County. Lazzaretto said the like Arcadia, “It is a bedroom commu-
nity.” Arcadia has long called itself a “Community of Homes.” La Palma is just such a community with just over 75% of it dedicated to residential property. His understanding of this type of community will doubtless be useful in Lazzaretto’s new role. “Residential areas do not pay for themselves,” Lazzaretto explained. “Businesses are needed to support the city. My job is to find the right balance for Arcadia.” He explained that finding this balance would include determining what the city needs and balancing that with what its residents want. Asked what plans he had for the Arcadia, Lazzaretto said that was not his understanding of his role. “As City Manager, it is my job to understand what the City Council wants and to help them implement that.” He is aware ot the issues facing the community and the council” the coming of the Gold Line and what it will mean to Arcadia, the use of excess area at the race track, the possible expansion of Rusnack motors, the potential and/or need of developing a stronger downtown. Asked his position on these issues, he reiterated that that was not his role. “That is not the City Manager’s job,” he said. Lazzaretto knows well what being a city manager means. Not only did he hold that position in La
Palma and restaurant management. He majored in that field at Penn State University, but a degree was not all he found in Happy Valley. Appropriately it was there he met his future wife, Christine. She now works locally as an advocate for historic preservation. “I finally joined the family business in 1994,” said of his change of career, meaning that he began working in his father’s consulting firm, A. C. Lazzaretto & Associates. The firm specializes in assisting cities in administration and management, especially community development. From there it was a small step to his position at La Palma. Lazzaretto has not left behind all that originally interested him in the restaurant field: of his hobbies he mentioned cooking first. He says he and his wife also enjoy traveling and skiing. His other athletic interests include cycling and running. Arcadia is not unfamiliar to Lazzaretto; for the last several years he has participated in an “over 30” soccer league which plays part of the year at Arcadia High School. When Lazzaretto takes over as Arcadia’s City Manager, perhaps his early training at Penn State will be an asset. In essence, Lazzaretto will be become the concierge for over fifty thousand people, the residents of Arcadia.

1995 Murder Suspect Extradited From Mexico The Pasadena Police Department received information from an anonymous informant who knew the whereabouts of murder suspect, Raul A. Romero, who was hiding in Jalisco, Mexico. The U.S. Marshalls Office was given the information for investigation. The Marshalls conducted interviews and orchestrated the capture of Raul Alcazar Romero, MH 56. The arrest was in cooperation with Mexican authorities and Romero was arrested and jailed in Mexico for the past year. The U.S. Marshalls and

the officer who had initiated the pursuit. Fearing for his safety, the officer fired several rounds from his duty weapon at the vehicle charging him. Two additional officers, fearing for the safety of the first officer, fired several rounds from their duty weapons at the suspect. The suspect, who had been hit by the gunfire drove into a residence on the southeast corner of Ar-
den Drive and Freer Street, Temple City. The wounded suspect was transported to Los Angeles County, University of Southern California, Medical Center, Los Angeles, where he was listed in critical condition. No one inside the residence was injured. No officers were injured. There is no more information available at this time.

SoCalGas Warns Customers About Utility Imposters Southern California Gas Co.(SoCalGas) is alerting customers to be aware of persons who reportedly have recently posed as SoCalGas employees. According to a news account, the imposters distract an unsuspecting customer by performing “gas leak inspections” while an accomplice burglarizes the customer’s home. SoCalGas wants to assure all customers that all SoCalGas employees carry proper identification when called out to any job. Customers should verify the employee’s proper uniform and identification before letting anyone in the home or on their property. Customer safety is a top priority for SoCalGas and employees will always be happy to wait while the customer confirms their
identity. Here are some tips to help customers identify SoCalGas employees: Be vigilant and question anyone who presents themselves as a representative of the utility SoCalGas workers who perform in-home appliance services, work on gas meters or work on gas pipelines wear uniforms. However, some other employees do not. Always ask for identification before allowing anyone inside the home or on the property The majority of authorized SoCalGas employees will be in uniform with company logo and carry an official employee badge. Most field employees also drive a company vehicle Most of the time a SoCalGas employee visits
a home or business in response to a service request. If no one scheduled an appointment, call SoCalGas before allowing anyone inside the home or property Never leave the house unlocked and unattended. The post's very own Venture Crew 561 participated in the 2nd annual ceremony at the Memorial Park in Sierra Madre for the Unknown Scout. This memorial celebrates the founding of the Boy Scouts of America initiated by an American business man, Mr. William D. Boyce in 1910. While in London, England during a heavy fog Mr. Boyce became disorientated and was assisted by an unknown Scout in a chance encounter. Mr. Boyce was so impressed by the unselfish actions and attitude of this young boy that when he returned to America he founded the Boy Scouts of America based upon the English version. The monument in Sierra Madre's Memorial Park was dedicated by veterans following WW II to commemorate this London Boy Scouts who served as the inspiration for the founding the Boy Scouts of America.
This years celebration was attended by Past Department Auxiliary President Norma DuVall, your post Commander Peter Douglas, Post Adjutant Robert (Eagle) Linker & 1st Vice Ed Barlow. Bugling was provided by Mr. John Holzinger as assistant Crew leader and the three scouts attending were John, Paul and Peter Sedaros of the Post 280 sponsored Venture Crew. Several bugle calls were played adding significantly to the festivities. Our heartfelt appreciation goes out for the Crews' participation in not only this event but for all their efforts in supporting the post and veterans throughout the year. While I was there I connected with 7 gold Star Mothers. They invited us to be of a part of their event in September. I will post the flyer when
we get a little closer to that date. On Monday the 20th we having our Department President visiting Post 280 and have Dinner with all of the elegant District 18. All are welcome. To mark the Centennial of the Maryknoll Sisters, a Roman Catholic Religious Missionary Congregation, a Prayer Service will be held on March 25, 2012 at Immaculate Conception Church, 740 Shamrock Ave., Monrovia, California. The Maryknoll Sisters were founded in 1912 by Mollie Rogers, a Smith College graduate. Since their
founding, hundreds of sisters have served in Asia, Africa, Central and South America and the Islands of the Pacific. The sisters have also responded to the needs of immigrants in the United States. One of their earliest works was an orphanage and a school for the Japanese children in Los Angeles (1921) and a tuber-
culosis hospital in Monrovia (1930). Today, the former hospital has been converted into a retirement facility for returning missioners. They continue to do volunteer work throughout Los Angeles County. More information is available on the Maryknoll website: www.maryknollsisters.org.

The excitement built at Camino Grove Elementary School as Saturday, March 3rd marked the first time the City of Arcadia Girls Softball Association had their own Softball Season Opening Ceremony. Mayor, Gary Kovacic, threw out the ceremonial first pitch to Arcadia High School Varsity Softball Coach Megan Leahy. They were present along with over 150 softball players and their families to celebrate. Dawning brand new uniforms and in honor of this momentous occasion the festivities started off by the presentation of the Colors by Boy Scout Troop 161 Honor Guard out of Temple City, CA, followed by the National Anthem performed by 15
year old Alana De Blase an Arcadian Girl Scout Gold Award recipient. It was all topped off with a 1940 Navy Stearman Biplane Flyover together with smoke signals and all flown by pilot/owner and Arcadia resident Gabe Lopez . The beautiful vintage aircraft has been featured in the T.V. show JAG and has performed flyovers for the Rose Parade. As a highlight, the league recognized the reigning 14U Western National Champions from Arcadia. This coveted award was won by the girls and the prestigious trophies were awarded to the team after winning the tournament this past August. At the Western National Championship, Arcadia competed among 44
teams throughout California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Utah. The 14U girls won the entire tournament. The girls had 8 straight games and no losses. In eight games, Arcadia All-Stars scored 76 runs and allowed only 5 runs. They beat teams from Spokane, La Verne, Aliso Viejo, Rancho Bernardo, Garden Grove, Utah and Idaho. The Arcadia 14U All-Stars were saluted as the Western National 14U Fast Pitch Champion! After all of the announcements and speeches were made, all teams from 6U to 14U had their moment to shine. The teams had their traditional “run around the bases” and all girls from ages 5 to 15 had their time in the limelight. We were also proud to announce that later this Spring the Arcadia Fire Department together with the Arcadia Police Department will play in an exhibition game to help raise funds for the league. The family festival and match-up between Arcadia’s Finest Heroes will be played on May 12th, 2012 at Camino Grove Elementary School. We invite anyone interested in having a great time to come and enjoy themselves.
Kid’s Night Out Arcadia Community Center March Madness Friday, March 9th – 6-11pm Recreation Staff and Volunteers will offer themed games, a movie, a delicious dinner and supervision so mom and dad can have a night on the town or a quiet evening at home. Children must be at least
four years of age to attend. All activities will be geared toward elementary school children; anyone younger must be potty trained. The cost is $15.00 per child and also includes snacks and beverages. Registration

Hit-and-Run Driver, Tapia Gonzales, Sentencing Friday Emma Tapia-Gonzalez, 23, pleaded no contest in late January to a felony count of hit-and-run, a misdemeanor count of driving without a license and an infraction count of driving without insurance. She was released on her own recognizance pending sentencing.
Tapia-Gonzalez could face four and a half years in prison for the crime. 12 year old Bernice De La Torre who remains in hospital with critical injuries but is slowly improving . Bernice is now responding to some people she sees but there is a long road ahead
with therapy for the severity of her injuries. Tapia-Gonzalez fled the scene following the crash, but was arrested later in the evening at a Duarte business where her boyfriend worked.

One of the most exciting Fashion Shows and Tea ever hosted by the Arcadia Woman’s Club will be presented Saturday, March 24th at 12:00 noon, by Magnolia of Arcadia with owner Karen Crisci commentating. Cynthia’s of Special Occasions (caterer) will delight guests with her special menu. Gail Marshall, event chair, has many delightful surprises in store for the guests.

mega sale is so large, they have moved the main portion of the sale into their clubhouse. Every room in the vintage building will brim with quality merchandise. The Thrift Shop, at the rear of the building, will also be open. The budget-minded shoppers will find lowest prices on clothing and accessories for all family members, jewelry, house-

Over 200 guests arrived at the stately clubhouse on Grand Avenue in Pasadena on February 25th to celebrate the Shakespeare Club’s return to a big musical show, The Music Man. The benefit production will be at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse March 24th, 8:00 p.m. and March 25th 2 p.m. The gala was an incredible evening with non-stop delicious food, drinks, entertainment, auction and music. These ladies, with support of their husbands are experts at producing results. Rebecca Harris, gala chairman, along with her committee, Shirley Bone, Ellen Entner, Monica Forgey, Marge Landry, and Carole Vassy, planned for and setup the gala event. Judy Norquist, benefit chairman, oversees all of the benefit, including the gala, silent auction and musical production. Kathy Anderson and Sue Rose were the silent auction cochairs for this event. Guests included club members, their spouses,
Music Man cast members and friends. Debra Unruh, executive director, and Kirsten Mickelson, alumni cast manager from Elizabeth house, attended as well as Mr. Greg Wessels, CEO of Rosemary Children’s Services and whis wife Elzine Wessels. There were some members of the Pasadena Education Foundation who attended. Mr. And Mrs. Chris Karp and Mr. And Mrs. Shawn McCreight. The live auctioneer was Bob Heintz (husband of member Lou Ann Heintz). The Barbershop quartet that entertained guests all evening and who will be appearing in our production of the Music Man, were Phil Aydon, Sean Chasworth, John Minsker and Randall Thorpe. Live Entertainment in the ballroom was provided by the Maestros musical group who donated their time to our event. The magician was Doug Slater who was entertaining in the hall. The choreographer for the Music Man, Rikki Lugo, was there along with our Marion the Librarian, Peg-
gy Schmid. Drama Chairman, Tanya Danforth; benefit chairman, Judy Norquist; stage manager, Annette Arce; and lighting, Darrell Clark, were also in attendance. Bartenders were Ray Becker, Ron Bone, Don Harris, and Ron Forgey. The champagne servers in the foyer were Asa Meudell, Diane Johnson and Monica Forgey. The Social Whirl Meet the Candidates! Hear the Candidates! The Arcadia Chinese Association (ACA) and the Arcadia Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) are cosponsoring an Arcadia City Council Candidates’ Forum. The Forum takes place Friday, March 16, 7 p.m. at Arcadia Community Center, 365 Campus Dr., Arcadia. This is a free event. Arcadians are invited to come early at 6:30 p.m. to meet the candidates before the Forum begins. All five candidates have confirmed they will participate. The five candidates vying for two open seats ae Mary Doughterty, Gary Kovacic, Henry Nunez, Sho Tay, and John
Wuo. A Forum such as this gives residents an opportunity to listen to the candidates, to ask them for answers to crucial questions, and to become better informed voters. This year’s election will be an all mail-in election, and ballots will be mailed to residents on March 10, a month before the General Municipal Election on Tuesday, April 10. There qill be no polling places. Tao Kuo of ACA is chairperson of the Forum, and Betty Harris of Arcadia AAUW will serve as moderator. Residents are invited to come and hear what the candidates’ visions are for Arcadia’s future.

Pasadena Reaches Out With Community Needs-Assessment Survey The departments of Human Services and Recreation and Housing have launched a communitywide needs-assessment survey, making it available at a variety of locations around the city and online. The two city departments are working together to make certain their services are aligned with critical needs of residents, and that limited community resources are used to their best effect. The effort is strongly supported by partnering community organizations. “The survey is an opportunity for parents to make their families’ voices heard about Pasadena’s parks, playgrounds, teen center, sports fields and housing needs,” explained Jaylene Moseley, President of the Flintridge Center.
“Parents’ opinions and feedback will be particularly important for the city in planning for the future.” Surveys in both English and Spanish are available at Villa-Parke Community Center, the Teen Education Center at La Pintoresca Park, Jackie Robinson Community Center, Robinson Park Recreation Center, Victory Park Recreation Center, Pasadena Senior Center, the Department of Human Services and Recreation at City Hall, the Department of Housing at 649 North Fair Oaks, Suite 202, and all Pasadena libraries during their regular hours of operation. To emphasize the importance of the outreach, Vice Mayor Margaret McAustin and City Manag-
er Michael Beck will be on hand to conduct the survey personally on Saturday, March 10, from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at Victory Park Center, 2575 Paloma Street. Sierra Madre Chamber to Sponsor Council Candidate Election Events On Wednesday, March 14th from 6:30 to 8:30pm, the Council is sponsoring a Candidate forum, which will be moderated by the League of Women Voters, Pasadena Area. The forum will be held in City Council chambers in City Hall, 232 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. Residents will have the opportunity to put their questions in writing for the candidates. The League will have “question sorters” on hand to provide your questions to the moderator. According to the rules of
the forum provided by the LWVPA, “the sorters will compile similar questions together, for the moderator. It is each Moderator’s option to ask, or not ask, the Sorters themselves to condense/rephrase recurring questions on a topic. The Sorters become screeners only for questions inappropriate to a forum. They will intervene for reckless inflammatory questions or for very personal ones. The moderator attempts to present questions covering the widest range of issues.”

On Thursday, March 15th, the Chamber presents its March Mixer, annually hosted by the Sierra Madre Woman’s Club at their historic clubhouse, “Essick House,” located at 550 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. The mixer will be held from 5 to 7pm, and attendees will have the opportunity to meet and greet the Council candidates. Each candidate will be introduced an have an opportunity to speak for 2 – 3 minutes, but
the rest of the time they will be mingling with the attendees, who will also have the opportunity to sample the culinary skills of the Woman’s Club. As this is a fundraiser for the Chamber, admission will be charged, at the reduced rate of $5/person. All seven Council candidates have confirmed their intent to attend both Chamber events. Sunday, February 26: Around 2:13 a.m., an officer observed a red Nissan Altima stopped in the middle of First Avenue at Alta Street, impeding the flow of traffic. Upon contact with the driver, the officer noticed an odor of alcohol emitting from her person. An investigation revealed the 23-year-old female of unknown race was driving under the influence. She was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. At approximately 5:53 p.m., an unknown suspect wearing a white t-shirt and dark colored pants stole a bicycle from the parking lot near Bar Louie at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue. Video surveillance revealed a short time after the victim locked his bicycle to a parking sign pole, the suspect took the bicycle and fled undetected. The victim is desirous of prosecution. Monday, February 27: At about 3:59 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 000 block of Santa Rosa Road regarding an auto burglary report. Unknown suspect(s) smashed the rear window of a Nissan Xterra and stole the victim’s speaker box. No one saw or heard anything suspicious. Shortly after 8:00 p.m., an officer was dispatched to Nordstrom at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in reference to a theft report. A male adult suspect opened a Nordstrom credit account using a fake identification card and made fraudulent purchases. The 46-yearold Black male was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.
Tuesday, February 28: At about 11:09 a.m., an officer responded to the 000 block of West Lemon Avenue regarding a mail theft. The victim observed a female adult take a brown package from her front porch. The suspect, described as a pregnant Hispanic female in her mid twenties, approximately 150 lbs., with brown shoulderlength hair, wearing a brown floral print dress and brown sweater, entered the passenger seat of a brown vehicle, similar to a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue. The victim recorded the license plate number and further investigation is being conducted by the Detective Bureau. At approximately 12:46 p.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police Department front counter in regards to a fraud report. The victim explained she checked her credit report and discovered three utility accounts that were in collections, which she never opened. She has no idea how her information was comprised and is desirous of prosecution. Wednesday, February 29: Around 11:39 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in regards to a possible lost child. Witnesses advised mall security that a small girl appeared to be left alone in the child’s playground area, near JCPenney. When the officer walked the child around the mall to look for her parent(s), he was approached by a mall kiosk employee who claimed to be her father. An investigation revealed the employee was unable to find childcare for his 2-year-old daughter and left
her unattended in the child’s playground area while he worked. The father was counseled and a copy of the report was forwarded to the Department of Child and Family Services. At approximately 7:08 p.m., an officer responded to 000 block of South Third Avenue regarding a residential burglary report. The victim returned home and discovered his bedrooms had been ransacked. The officer determined the suspect(s) forced entry by smashing out the windowpane of a side door. The victim reported jewelry and several electronics devices missing. A neighbor across the street explained an unknown subject approximately 5’4” tall and medium build, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with the hood over his head, knocked on her front door at approximately 1:00 p.m.; however, she did not answer because she believed he was a solicitor. She explained he knocked off and on, for approximately 20 minutes, and she also heard banging noises next door. She peered out the window and observed a silver minivan parked across the street and later observed the same minivan parked in the victim’s driveway. Thursday, March 1: Shortly after 9:59 a.m., an officer was dispatched to West Duarte Road and Holly Avenue in regards to a two-party traffic accident. Party-two attempted to turn left onto southbound Holly Avenue on a green arrow when she was struck by party-one. An investigation revealed partyone failed to stop at the red light. No major injuries were reported. At about 8:45 p.m.,

The victim explained he went to 24 Hour Fitness, 125 North First Avenue, to update his account with his new debit card information. A short time later, he discovered unauthorized charges were made on Amazon.com using his debit card. He learned the purchaser’s name was the same as the 24 Hour Fitness representative who completed the changes on his account. He is desirous of prosecution. Friday, March 2: Around 3:11 p.m., a victim of fraud came into the Arcadia Police Department front counter to report fraudulent use of his social security number. He explained he received a notice from the IRS indicating there was a discrepancy on his 2010 taxes. An investigation revealed an unknown subject used his social security number to file a false income tax return. The victim has no idea how his information was compromised. At about 10:00 p.m., an officer was traveling on Huntington Drive at Baldwin Avenue and observed a parked Honda Accord with no license plates. The officer made contact with the driver and discovered his license was suspended. The 23-year-old Hispanic male was cited and released in the field. Lives Remembered Estella Pearl “Pat” Chase August 13, 1916 - February 27, 2012 Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away surrounded by her family. She is survived by her five daughters, Nancy (Rich)Kallenberger of Yakima, WA, Patricia Chase, of Oakland, CA, Carolyn (Weliton) Carvalho of Aracaju, Brazil, Mary Jean(Burr)Field of Prosser, WA, and Teresa Chase of Alta Loma, CA, thirteen grandchildren: Sharon, Linda, Rob, Maria, Charlie, Patrick, Isabela, Anne, Charles Lucas, Jeannie Rose, Carl, Rachel, Molly, and three great children and her sister Carol Johnson of Kennewick, WA. Pat lived her early life in Idaho and Washington in alarge close knit family. Graduating from Lewiston Normal School in 1940, she taught in rural Idaho in a one room school house. World War II cut her teaching career shortwhenshe enlisted in the Women Army Corps in 1942. Nicknamed “Pat” by her Army friends, shewas stationed in Tampa, FL, where she met her future husband, Army Sgt.Charles Chase. They were marriedon
November 24, 1945, and settled in Pacoima, CA. Charles returned to his job at the Los Angeles Times where his45 year career took him from type setter and pressman toExecutive
Vice President, while Pat started her homemaking career raising their 6 children. The couple moved to Arcadiain 1954 where she resided until 2011. The family was an active member of the St. Luke’s Parish for nearly six decades, where Pat was involved in school and
church activities, including Legion of Mary, visiting shut ins, Cooking Angels and other community activities. She traveled all over the United States including Alaska in the family motor home. She also made trips to Brazil, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, and a pilgrimage to Medugorje. Her family, friends and all who knew her remember her generosity, strong religious convictions, kindness , love of reading and learning, interesting conversations with anybody she met, love for the outdoorsand how she enjoyed bike riding and walking until her later years. Arcadians: Look for Your Ballots to Arrive by susan motander Ballots are being mailed on Monday, March 12 to registered voters in Arcadia for the next municipal election. Based on the overwhelming use of absentee ballots over voting at the polls recently, the Arcadia City Council decided to hold its election completely by mail. This election will include two City Council seats, one ballot measure and the position of City Clerk. However, as only Glen Glasco has filed for City Clerk. There are five candidates for the two Council seats. Of the two seats, one is an open position as Roger Chandler has been termed out. Gary Kovacic is running for reelection.
Also running are Mary Dougherty, Henry Nunez, Sho Tay, and John Wuo. Wuo has served previously on the council. Both Nunez and Tay have run before. Dougherty has previously served on the local Board of Education. The voter packets which go out next week will include not only the sample ballot information including candidate statements, but also the actual election ballots. Do not throw out your ballot. This is the real ballot which registered voters must return in order to vote. Ballots must be received by election day, April 10. The ballots can be returned by mail or can be brought directly to the
City Clerk’s office at Arcadia’s City Hall. In addition to regular business hours until the day of the election, on April 10 itself, the City Clerk’s office will be open to receive ballots until 8 p.m. Ballots mailed, but not received by April 10 will not be counted according to Deputy City Clerk, Lisa Mussenden. She suggests bringing the ballots to City Hall rather than relying on the postal service if voters wait to the last minute. Complete statements and photographs of the candidates will be published in next week’s edition of this newspaper to assist voters in making informed decisions.

Burstyn has also been an avid proponent of youth sports and has nurtured and encouraged numerous Arcadia athletes over the years. We asked Burstyn if the $4 presciption “incentive” with the big box stores was a key factor. “Sure,” he said “a little guy like me cannot compete with that….also I don’t sell milk or other things like that so I’d be losing even more money. I simply couldn’t afford to do that.” But the decision to close was more of a conglomeration of paperwork and late insurance reinbursements. “My vendors want their money in 15 days; with the Insurances companies we’re lucky if we get paid in 30 days.” The pain Burstyn feels is epidemic. Small businesses are losing ground rapidly and brick and mortar shops are becoming a thing of the past. In many instances swallowed up by mega markets with huge buying power. The small independent retailer simply cannot compete with big box stores such a WalMart. Trying desperatly to hold back the tears, Mark Burstyn explained how things have changed on his watch, particularly through 07-09. “My kid’s have only known me at this pharmacy” he said. Matt 22, and Steve 17 and wife Mary make up the Burstyn family and has been the sole breadwinner in the family ever since graduation from Pharmacy College in 1984. “I’ve seen patients get better and seen some die over the years. This is my extended family. You really get
to know your community in this business.” Working about 60 hours a week Burstyn was philosophical about the change he’s about to undetake. “ 40 hours will seem like part time to me after all these years of running Colonial Pharmcay” he quipped. Mark Burstyn and some of his staff will be moving to Von’s Pavillions Pharmacy on March 21. The actual last day for Colonial will be March 20. In the 1950’s many small towns had 100% employment. There were farms, there were schools, there was industry, and there were shops up and down Main Street selling all sorts of goods. Everything in those towns, from the gas sold at the station, to the used car on the lot, to the oven in the bakery and the products coming out of the oven, to the beer sold at the bar and the juke box in the corner, and he boots on the feet of the patrons, to the pharmacy next door and the lipstick on the clerk, were made in America by Americans, and bought in America by Americans. Like a closed ecosystem, America was, at this point, self sustaining. In the 2000’s almost everything in that small town, from the gas station, (oil from Saudi) to the car, (made in Japan) to the oven (made in Korea) to flour (milled in Jamaica) to the beer (from Germany) to the Juke Box (made in China) to the boots (made in Malaysia), to the pharmacy (drugs made in various other countries with ingredients from other countries) to the lipstick (made in China) are made elsewhere and sold all over the world. Ironically just as the rising collective age of Americans is leading to a need for
more health care workers, the same thing is also leading to a need for more prescription drugs and those who know how to prescribe them. In addition, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a growing number of pharmacies are starting to offer on-site diagnoses and patient care, stretching the amount of skilled and well-trained pharmacists needed. The demand for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians is expected to rise by over 30% in the next decade. However, that need doesn’t necessarilly translate into corner pharmacies like Colonial being successful or even being able to stay afloat. The costs incurred are too prohibitive for small pharmaciies to compete. Colonial Pharmacy’s policy has always been “old-fashioned” personal service with a commitment to keeping current with the most recent medical developments.” Despite Mark Burstyn’s best efforts, Colonial had little choice but to regroup. Colonial had to move on and will now join Pavillion’s team in Arcadia. All prescriptions will automatically be transferred to their system so the transormation should be painless for most patients. Also Burstyn will continue to compound at Pavillions. When visiting Burstyn’s Colonial pharmacy one can see the history, it’s full of collectibles that run the gamut from medicine bottles to scales to 'show globes' - large glass balls used as window displays. Literally, Colonial Pharmacy was the corner pharmacy once ubiquitous and came to symbolize small-town America.
