Students at Madison Elementary Honor Dr. Martin Luther Larry Spicer: New Face King Jr.’s Legacy on 82nd Anniversary of his Birth

cores of students, parents, volunteers , school board members and area politicians including Anthony Portantino and PUSD Superintendent Jon Gundry joined forces Saturday morning for a clean up and planting at Madison Elementary in Pasadena in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. “Day On, Not Off” - the theme for a major planting at beautification at Madison Elementary School Saturday, to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is part of a nationwide effort to educate and inspire young students. President Jackie Jacobs, a former Pasadena Board of Education member said “A Day On, Not Off” is the brainchild of the Atlanta Martin Luther King Center for Social Change, and similar events happen all over the US during the MLK weekend. The community coaltion has been volunteering with similar projects for over a decade. On Monday Governor Brown issued the following proclamation: “I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.” – Dr.

Martin Luther King Jr. accepting the Nobel Peace Prize, 1964 Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream, a dream we can still see vividly when we revisit the most famous of his many timeless speeches. His vision of a world free of hatred and injustice has changed the face of American society and continues to inspire people around the world. What gave Dr. King’s dream such force was his steadfast commitment to confront his enemies without violence and to love those who hated him, knowing that hatred only begets hatred, and violence always fans the flames of injustice. On this 82nd anniversary of his birth, let us reflect on his words and vision, and consider what each of us can do today to help keep his dream alive. Many opportunities to serve our communities can be found at CaliforniaVolunteers.org. The Pasadena Martin Luther King Community Coalition has staged the annual volunteer effort at different public schools since 2001 and will continue to spread the words of Dr. King in the Pasadena area for many years to come.

Usually when there is a new City Council member sworn in, the community has learned something about the individual through the process of an election campaign. Larry Spicer was sworn into the council last week at a special meeting regarding redevelopment. As he joins the council as a temporary replacement for Clarence Shaw, Spicer is an unknown commodity to some parts of the community. To others his is a well known face. Spicer was raised in Monrovia attending Huntington Elementary School and Clifton Junior High before graduating from Mon-

Dorothy's Place Parking Lot Frazzle

By Dorothy Denne You are here [x]. I know I am here [x], but how did I get here [x] and where in Hell is my car? The American idea has long been that bigger is better: expand the shopping centers, scores of stores, everything in one stop, shop 'til you drop. Yeah, right. Then try to find your car. It's important to make mental notes from the beginning. I turn in off Z Street, make a right up the ramp, turn left and back through the structure. Fol-

low that one way arrow down around and around and come out right by the little kiosk. Down one aisle, up the next almost to the end and park beside a big white post. I'll definitely remember the post. I hit it when I open the door. I walk through three rows of cars, then left to the escalator. I get off the escalator right by the fragrance counter. I walk past the yellow shirts, the green shirts and the Gawd awful flowered ties, through the jewelry and out into the open mall. In and out of shops, upper level, lower level, round and round. I look a lot, try a lot, buy a little. I graze my way around the food court, then turn to my right and check the movies. Noth-

ing appealing in any of the multiple theaters, so I'm going home. No problem, just backtrack to the car. Call up the mental notes. Turn to my left and back to the escalator near the fragrance counter. Was the escalator in Macy's at the north end or in Penney's at the south end? Was that men's fragrances or women's fragrances? Did I leave the car on level B or level C or maybe level D? Was the sign blue or purple? Was that post #1 or post #73? Everything is so big. Everything looks alike. Where am I? I am here [x] standing in the bowels of the earth, and I haven't the foggiest notion where in Hell I parked my car......

Slacker I’m learning a lot being out in the work place again. Strikingly different is that people don’t have just 1 job or just 1 career any more. Because of this “down-turned economy” people have careers and 2 and 3 jobs, just to make ends meet. Whereas weeks earlier I was proud of myself for having 1 new job I was faced with a harsh reality – I was a slacker! So when my good friend, who was leaving her job as an assistant to an interior decorator for a full-time job, suggested I interview for her old job it seemed only natural. But driving to the appointment I began to think, “What was I getting myself into?” I hadn’t interviewed for a real job in years. I began to feel overwhelmed. When I arrived, I stopped at the mouth of the driveway of the Tudor style home. Where do I park? HOOOONK!!! I jumped out of my car seat from the blaring car horn. “Out of the way!” The driver shouted from the window. Ruffled, I backed out,

by Leslie Frieberger parked on the street and waited a few minutes for my perspective boss to get inside. The grounds were lovely with manicured gardens, a fountain, and pathway leading up to the picturesque front door with leaded glass windows. Hanging on the front door was a wreath made of vines and dried fruit. I gathered myself and rang the doorbell. Waited. I didn’t hear anything. Rang again. Waited. I peered inside around the wreath through the window. Just at that moment I heard the clip clip of high heels on a hard wood floor. Yikes! Abruptly I pulled back but as I did my hoop earring got stuck in the vines of the wreath. I was attached to the door. I struggled, yanking and pulling, but I couldn’t free myself. I could see her coming closer. She opened the door with a swooping motion sending me hurling into the entryway. Hunched over like Quasimodo I took baby steps to keep from falling. I jerked my head surrendering the earring to the wreath. God I hope first or second

impressions don’t really matter. She smiled, “I hope that wasn’t you in the driveway. I get strangers using it all the time to turn around.” We sat in her warm kitchen and drank steaming tea from china cups with saucers. We chatted about France and my kids. I thought things were going swimmingly, until I noticed my reflection in the window. That darn wreath had pulled pieces of my hair straight up. I looked like a cousin to Dr. Seuss’ the Lorax. And when she asked me my age I fumbled. My age? I couldn’t quite think of a number I liked at the spur of the moment. I lied. Badly. Still, I got the job. I was so surprised I reached over and hugged her. What was I thinking? Nobody in their right mind hugs a brand new employer. She stood stiff. I know she was thinking, “What have I gotten myself into?” And so, I’m joining the others and embracing these new economic challenging times of multi-tasking jobs with reckless abandon.

The Spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. in Monrovia By Jennifer Boone and Ralph Walker The Spirit of Dr. King in Monrovia. Celebrating the legacy of Dr. King can be a daunting task. So many areas to pull from. One Monrovian, Joannie Yuille and her friend Nancy Scott from Claremont, CA collaborated together to reflect on the “The Meaning of King Day.” When I asked Joannie what inspired her to have this event on Saturday, January 14, 2012. She replied, “My friend and I have been taking courses about one of the Central Figures, Abdul’l-Baha, of our religion, The Baha’i Faith. As we started studying about how he promoted and taught about the Oneness of Mankind during his visit to America in 1912 we saw the link to how Martin Luther King Jr. actualized the principles during the Civil Rights Movement. We didn’t feel that there were any celebrations in our area so we decided to host a King Day Celebration in my home.”

Upon arriving, there were over 60 people already nestled throughout the house. The mouthwatering buffet reflected the diversity of the people. As young and old introduced themselves to each other or just engaged in conversation. Joyce Chavis set the tone and the spirit with a-capella version of one of Dr. King’s favorite song, “His Eye is on the Sparrow”. The Nightengale choir members which con-

sisted of little lads as well as teenagers and adults sung a song called, “We are Many Voices and We are Singing and We are not alone.” There were definitely many voices, many cultures and many people there to honor and reflect on the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. This event felt like a meeting hall with Dr. King. With an event this good, what will Joannie and Nancy do for an encore.

Mark Wahlberg Walks too Familiar Ground in “Contraband” Film Review By Michael James Gonzalez Having become an A-list actor and successful TV and movie producer for some time now, it’s puzzling why Mark Walhlberg would return to the action hero genre in such a forgettable, b-movie-type caper film like the newly released “Contraband.” Wahlberg, who was nominated for an Oscar in last year’s “The Fighter,” and who produces such hit shows as “Entourage,” sleepwalks through the role of Chris Farraday, a reformed smuggler turned security specialist and devoted family man. When Chris’s brother-inlaw (Caleb Landry Jones) becomes indebted to a violent gangster (Giovanni Ribisi) after a drug deal gone sour, Chris is lured back into the crime world he left behind with the help of his wild card

buddy from the past (Ben Foster). To pay his brother-in-law’s debt, Farraday plans one last smuggling job, but, of course, things don’t go according to plan, as Panamanian gangsters threaten not only the lives of Farraday and his crew but his wife and kids too. I was excited to see this movie because, generally, Wahlberg is perfect for these kind of high-octane, shoot-em-up action flicks; however, not even he can save this dull and cliché film, chock-full with trite dialogue, clunky camera shots, and action sequences that remind you of the kind of live-action shows at Universal Studios. The film’s only saving grace is its somewhat interesting plot, which gets buried anyway by the director’s poor execution.

Arcadia High Principal Vannasdall to be Appointed Deputy Superintendent “Effective March 1, 2012, David Vannasdall will be appointed as the Deputy Superintendent to fill the vacancy created when Rob Leri leaves us to become the Superintendent of the Tahoe Truckee School District. David will continue to function as the Principal of Arcadia High and no interim will be appointed for the remainder of the school-year. We will advertise for a high school principal for Arcadia High beginning March 1st. We will recruit for this position for about five or six weeks, take another two or three weeks to screen, interview, and do reference check, etc. The goal is to select the new AHS principal by the first of May. We will engage in a robust, com-

prehensive, and inclusive process to select the best individual for this critically important position. The job will begin July 1, 2012. As you also may know, we have had a vacant Director of Facilities, Operations, Transportation, and Maintenance position for over a year. Additionally, on January 10th, Debra Amos retired from her position as Director of Food Services. Christina Aragon has been supervising these departments. We can no longer provide the needed support and supervision to the programs and staff of the Food Services, Transportation and Operations (our custodial department) departments without additional supervision staff. Therefore, effec-

tive Tuesday, January 17, 2012, Brook Reynolds, will be assigned as the Interim Director of Food Services, Operations, and Transportation. Danae Popovich, TOSA, will fill-in for Brook, and serve as Interim Principal of Camino Grove These assignments will be in place until June 30, 2012. At that time we will reassess the structure and supervision of these and the Maintenance departments. The above represents a great deal of change. I feel very fortunate that we have the talent among our current staff to fill these positions and provide the leadership and support needed and expected by our community and staff.”

gram. 2012 marks the program’s 8th year. This program partners professional scientists with (primarily) high school teachers to carry out an original research project and present the results at the semi-annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society, the professional organization for astronomers in the US. After completing the program, the teachers incorporate the experience into their classrooms and share their experience with other teachers. Following their second AAS meeting, all participant educators are required to conduct at least 12 hours of professional development in their schools and communities, at the local, regional, and national levels, in print and in person. In this way, the program has far-reaching impact, touching thousands of people nationally. “This program is unique because each team does original research using real astronomical data, not canned labs or reproductions of previously done research; and each team writes up the results of their research and presents it at a meeting of the AAS,” said Dr. Luisa Rebull, staff scientist at the

Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC), which is funded by NASA and located on the campus of the California Institute of Technology. “There are increasing calls on the national level to get more students and educators into the Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) pipeline and get more science in schools. This program is on the front lines of doing exactly that,” said Rebull. In 2011, the program consisted of 12 educators with a wide variety of backgrounds including the program’s first amateur astronomer -- these nontraditional educators often reach thousands of people per year, and provide another venue to convey the excitement of real research to the general public. 2011 Team working with Dr. Luisa Rebull (Spitzer Science Center/ IPAC, the center responsible for science operations of NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope) Chelen Johnson (Breck School, Minneapolis, MN) teacher mentor for team John Gibbs (Glencoe High School, Hillboro, OR) Marcella Linahan (Carmel Catholic High

On Monday, January 2, 2012, at about 4:25PM, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop of a bicyclist in the 10500 block of Lower Azusa Avenue in Temple City. During the contact, the deputy attempted to place the suspect under arrest for a narcotic related offense. The suspect resisted the arrest and began fighting with the deputy. During the struggle, the suspect gabbed and attempted to take the deputy’s gun from his holster.

The deputy maintained control of his sidearm and broke the grasp of the suspect. The suspect kicked and punched the deputy in his face and chest area during the fight. As the suspect began to run from the location, the deputy ordered the suspect to stop. As the suspect turned towards the deputy, he pulled a dark object from his waistband. Believing the suspect had armed himself with a handgun and fearing for his safety, the deputy fired one round at the suspect. The suspect ran southbound from the location. It is unknown if the suspect was struck by the round. A containment (search perimeter) was set up and the subsequent search of the area did not locate the suspect. The suspect is WANTED for Attempted Murder of a Peace Officer. He is described as: 32-37 year old Hispanic male. Black hair, light

eyes (possibly hazel) 5'08' 5'11' tall 160-180 pounds (See composite sketch of the suspect and a photo of his bicycle by clicking on the hyperlink at the bottom of this message) The suspect left his bicycle at the scene. The deputy involved in the incident was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries received during the assault. An ongoing investigation is being conducted by detectives from Temple Sheriff's Station Detective Bureau, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. If you have any information about this incident, please contact Detective Randall Rue-Las, Temple Sheriff's Station Detective Bureau, at (626) 285-7171. Celebration of Life Planned for Hal McClintock, Saturday Jan. 28

celebration of life for Hal McClintock will be held on Saturday, Jan 28 from 3 -5 PM. The private affair for family and friends will honor the man who devoted his professional life to locomotives and also documented the role they played in the development of the 20th Century with his photographic skills. Hal McClintock was born in Cactus,Wyoming 1920. In 1939 he moved to California where he would later (1942) start his lifelong love affair with trains by working as a motorman with Pacific Electric Railways where he worked until 1955. In 1959 McClintock became a locomotive engineer for Southern Pacific Railroad where he worked until he retired in 1983. Hal McClintock , 91, of Pasadena passed away rather suddenly last December from complica-

tions following a fall at home. With paralysis of the legs and a complicated fracture in the neck it was deemed inoperable at his age, according to surgeons. Hal McClintock had lived with love of his life, Bernice Miller of Pasadena, since 1992. Bernice and Hal first met at a bereavement group after they both lost their respective spouses one year earlier. For the next 19 .5 years, Hal and Bernice were inseparable. Moving in together and forming a new relationship that many of their friends said simply was just “meant to be.”The outgoing couple attended many community events in Sierra Madre and Arcadia as well as Pasadena with friends they made at the Support Group. They formed a splinter group they lovingly called the “Corrupt Group” with some of the other people with whom they had forged a very unique and rare bond.

Hal McClintock’s other passions in life, aside from his number one… Bernice, included golf , his wonderful Chihuahua “BEEJ”, online poker ( not for real money, of course ) and, of course anything connected with photography which sometimes included photographing beautiful models. His outgoing personality and love of life will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing Hal. Bernice Miller who is Hal McClintock’s love and partner for the past 20 years said that “Trains were his life”. However, anyone who knew Hal would tell you…Bernice was his life. He loved trains but when he found Bernice, he found a new lease on life and was devoted to her for the next 20 years. Hal was preceded in death by his only son, Richard, in 2009. Hal McClintock will be dearly missed.

Hal McClintock was nopt only a well loved motorman for Pacific Electric but also loved photographing trains and engines. Thisis one of his most sought after images - a train heading to Santa Anita Race Track. Thw 1109 made its way parallel to Colorado Blvd. Can you guess the year? -Photo by Hal B. McClintock

La Salle Names Russell Gordon New Football Coach La Salle’s Athletic Director Anthony Harris, announced the selection of Russell Gordon as the Lancers’ new football coach during a packed Athletics Boosters meeting Tuesday evening. Gordon comes to La Salle from Campbell Hall where he has been for the last 15 years. In his eight years as Head Coach, he has compiled a 51-37 overall record. Gordon has taken his teams to the post season four of his eight years including a trip to the CIF finals. Gordon was named CIF Coach of the Year in 2005 and is the Head Coach for the East in the 2012 Daily News All-Star game. Gordon has been successful preparing his athletes for the next level and has placed 17 of his former players on Division I and IAA college football teams. “I have had great success not only with a winning percentage, but also in making sure that student athletes learn to be accountable for their actions while learning lifelong lessons that they can implement into their daily living,” commented Gordon.

“We are very exited and pleased with taking our program to the next level,” said Harris. “Gordon was very impressive in the search process, but more importantly, he is the best fit for La Salle football as we move forward.” When asked why he applied for the coaching position, he said, there is a tremendous amount of talent and passion at La Salle. “I was on campus for the homecoming game when this team was 0-8 and I couldn’t believe what I saw. The stands were filled, the community really came out for La Salle and that was an 0-8 team. From then on, I really wanted to be a part of this program and I’m happy I was able to join Anthony.” “I’m really proud of this gentlemen,” said Harris of Gordon, who will also be the assistant athletic director. “I hired him 15 years ago at Campbell Hall and I’m really proud of the man he’s turned into and the coach that he’s become.” “Campbell Hall has been great to me and it’s a great school,” Gordon said.

April’s Mail in Election in Arcadia Has 5 Candidates Arcadia Mayor Gary Kovacic is running for two open City Council seats in the April 10 election. John Wuo, Sho Tay, Henry Nunez and former

school board president Mary Dougherty have also filed their paperwork to run in the all-mail ballot general municipal election which is saving the city thousands of dollars.

“But, I’m ready for a new challenge in my life. Plus, I look forward to professional growth and to be an assistant athletic director means a lot to me.” Gordon’s application was one of over 70 submitted that were eventually reduced to 10 immensely qualified candidates. “The interview process was pretty grueling because there were great candidates and lot of stuff to go through, but his (Gordon’s) package was exceptionally well thought out

and prepared,” Harris said. Gordon was the unanimous choice among the selection committee, according to the committee chair. Gordon, who is the school’s fifth football head coach, and says he will bring most of his staff to La Salle, replaces Coach Antoine Peterson, who remains part of the La Salle faculty. The Lancers reached the playoffs once during Peterson’s fouryear tenure and finished 7-34 overall.

The Final Count is in: For Office Of The City Council – 2 Year Term: Colin Braudrick, Chris Koerber. For Office Of The City Council – 4 Year Term: John Capoccia, John Harabedian, Gene Goss, Bill Tice, MaryAnn MacGillivray. For Office Of City Treasurer: Richard Mays. For Office Of City Clerk: Nancy

Sue Shollenberger There will be two measures on the ballot: Measure 12-1 and Measure 12-2 for the UUT and Advisory Measure. More information will follow. Arguments in Favor and Arguments Against are due January 17th. Rebuttal arguments are due January 27, 2012.

35th Doo Dah Parade Slated for April 28 By Paddy Hurley and Terry Miller

Red Rosie, the reigning Doo Dah Queen ( from Sierra Madre) will help crown the newly selected Doo Dah Queen on April 1. Meanwhile Uncle Fester attempted his presidential bid. -Photos by Terry Miller

Now that the streets are safe from RV’s and thousands of football and Occupy fans, it’s that time of year when we start waxing philosophical about the OTHER parade for which Pasadena is so well known ….the Doo Dah Parade where just about any goes and usually does! This year's Pasadena Doo Dah Parade will again bring its own brand of rau-

cous eccentricity East, after its successful relocation from old Pasadena last year. The 2012 Parade takes place on Saturday, April 28th, stepping off at 11:00AM in East Pasadena along Colorado Boulevard. I’m hoping that this year will showcase an homage to the wonderful and disturbed characters who are running or ran away from the GOP nomination. This unprece-

dented madness seems tailor made for Doo Dah. In fact I vote for Steven Colbert for Grand Marshal….It’s bound to push him over that 5% lead, especially now that Huntsman has packed it in. Perhaps we could have a Romney Cobert debate at the American Legion post parade on April 28 and former Doo Dah Queen Naughty Mickie ( who moonlights as a journal-

ist for ‘another paper’) could moderate. Now wouldn’t that be a GREAT DEBATE? Well if that doesn’t happen fear not: Last year, dozens of inventive, if zany, art cars and floats accompanied a legion of frolickers past the mom-n-pop shops along East Pasadena's shady tree-lined streets, including many firsttime entries like the League of Steam, Machina Candeo, Conehead Rocket Sled, Hippie Cream, Easy Acres Chicken Sitters, Wisdom Arts Laboratory, combined bands of the 35th Dragoon Guards, Mile High Bed, Cheesus Chrust Pizza Company, 2011 Queen Red Rosie, Balkan Brass Band, and the Ladies Auxiliary for Cultural Enrichment, among others. Known as the extremely twisted sister of the highly conventional Rose Parade, the Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade began as a grassroots event in 1978 to gain national attention for its eccentric and, often, irreverent satire. The parade which has spawned numerous offbeat replicants across the country was named by Readers Digest as "America's Best Parade," and was recently fea-

tured in the book 50 Places You Must Visit Before You Die! This year's spectacle will see the return of such wildly diverse entries as a fleet of motorized Kinetic Pastry Science Mobile Muffins, Captain McHogwash's Amazing Chundra, a humungous robotic spitting cat named Boo-Boo Kitty, oddly-attired sound inventors known as The Highland Park Thursday Evening Gentlemen's Society Circuit Bending Marching Band & Ladies' Auxiliary, and the crowd favorite Disco Drill Team, real American Bandstanders, Bastard Sons of Lee Marvin, OC NRML, The Billionaires, Occupy Doo Dah, Quilting Bees, Whistling Diva, The Bra-

Ettes, L.A. Derby Dolls, classic, scary clowns, BBQ & Hibachi Marching Grill Team, Hare Kirshna Chanters, Howdy Krishna, and the immortal Doo Dah house band Snotty Scotty & the Hankies, and many more! Plenty of street parking is available ~ Parade route is also just west of the Sierra Madre Villa Gold Line Station (at Colorado Blvd. and Sierra Madre Villa). City busses go directly to the area. Official Doo Dah AfterParty: American Legion, 179 N. Vinedo St. (2 blocks from Parade at Vinedo & Walnut), immediately following the event. Bands...cheap food and drinks!! $5 cover (supports a Legion charity). For more information go: www. pasadenadoodahparade.info.

“Where are the Men?” discusses the importance of involving men in family planning and reproductive health for advancement of women’s health and development, particularly in male-dominated societies like Afghanistan. The film highlights the value of understanding and considering local culture in design and implementation of developmental programs in societies that are very different than western societies. “Where are the Men?” has won several awards and recognitions. It has claimed Best Film, Best Narration and Best Director awards at the Los Angeles Reel Film Festival 2011 and won special recognitions at various other film festivals. This film is being shown at different universities and colleges such as University of Georgia College of Public Health, University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, University of Texas School of Nursing, and California State University Northridge where it is being used as an educational tool in Women’s Health and Development and Global Health courses. The event will take place at the Woman’s Club of Arcadia, 324 S. First Ave., Arcadia, CA 91006.

As of December 20, 2011, the new business partners completed their purchase of the local realty franchise from longtime owner, Daniel Bryant. “We’ve done business together regularly over a quarter century, known and respected each other’s business acumen and ideas at competing firms and together at Prudential here for the last two years,” said Barker. “It’s a great step we were anxious to take, and we have had a very positive response from the Sierra Madre and foothill communities, our own 32 agents and our peers in the real estate world,” said Rose. Rose has been a Realtor for 25 years, the top sales agent at this office since 1988, and ranked in the top 1% of Prudential agents since 1993. She has

also served as a Director of Arcadia’s Association of Realtors. Texas born Rose spent her early years in the Big Easy, New Orleans, and has a large extended family there. She and her local family members reside in Arcadia and Sierra Madre, and her daughter attends Loyola Marymount University. Born and bred in Pasadena, John Barker attended Arcadia High School, and has been a Realtor since age 18. Within his first years as a licensed Realtor, he rose to top agent at his office and remained there from 1976-82. As a Broker, he has owned or managed several large real estate franchises in Southern California in both Los Angeles and San Diego. Barker served as President of the Arcadia Association of Realtors and held a state level Director position at

the California Association of Realtors for several years until 2012. Rose and Barker plan to continue Prudential’s traditional involvement with the 4th of July parade celebrations, the Wine and Jazz Walk, and other charitable and community involvements. They intend to grow this independently owned franchise real estate office, building on the 32 agents now in their fold. “We like the traditional name recognition and stability of the Prudential rock, and are planning out our strategy to become even stronger here in the foothill communities” they said. For more information, contact Barker or Rose at 626-355-1600 at Prudential California Real Estate, 115 W. Sierra Madre Boulevard, Sierra Madre.

HRTV Film Festival to Debut at Santa Anita, ‘A Day At The Races’ Theme Santa Anita Park and HRTV have announced plans for a first-ever nonfiction documentary competition entitled “A Day at the Races,” which will be open to film students and filmmakers wishing to make a five-minute or less Santa-Anita based film. “A Day at the Races” entries will be judged by a panel of racing and entertainment professionals and will offer a first prize of $10,000, a second prize of $5,000 and a third prize of $3,000. An additional $10,000 first prize will be awarded to the winner through an on-line poll. Application entries, which must be made inperson, will be accepted beginning Jan. 20, with the first day of shooting scheduled for Feb. 9. Shooting will continue through March 25 and all film submissions will be due no later than March 28, with winners to be announced on Santa Anita’s closing day,

April 22. “We’re very excited to be partnering with Santa Anita to initiate this project,” said HRTV President Scott Daruty. “Dating back to its opening in 1934, Santa Anita has been synonymous with great film production. “The movie Seabiscuit was filmed almost entirely at Santa Anita in 2003 and it was a huge hit. We’re now about to roll out HBO’s dramatic series LUCK (on Jan. 29). We think there’s going to be a great deal of interest in this first-ever film festival.” There is a general entry fee of $200 and students may enter for $50 with valid student identification by February 15. Those entering after that date may do so for $250 and $75 respectively. “This project is going to enable us to reach a group of highly creative people who are anxious to help us tell our story,” said Santa Anita’s Vice President of Sales and

Marketing Chris Quinn. “It’s exciting to think about aspiring film makers at a number of local colleges and universities, as well as a wide range of independent filmmakers, converging on Santa Anita to produce a short-subject film of this nature. It should be a lot of fun.” Each entrant will be given two film festival credentials which will allow shooting access to all public area at Santa Anita. Additionally, each entrant will be given 10 Club House passes good for admission throughout Santa Anita’s winter/spring meeting. Final submissions should be made to www.hrtv.com. All entries must be made in person at Santa Anita. Credentials must also be picked up and payment made inperson at Santa Anita. There is even an App to help you find where you can purchase mass quantities of Cookies Perhaps some things have really just gotten too expensive. But buying Girl Scout cookies with a credit card seems a little too much… but then again have you seen the prices? Actually it’s probably a great marketing plan to sell a lot more cookies this year. All kidding aside the official Girls Scout Cookie Season starts January 20 and ends March, 25, 2012. During this 100th anniversary year, the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles’ local troops will take their cookie sales hi-tech. For the first time in the Los Angeles County area, cookie booths will be able to accept credit cards using a device from Sage Mobile Payments. The secure credit card reader attaches to a smart phone allowing troops to accept debit and credit cards, email receipts and even refund money to customers’ on-the-spot right from a smart phone. The annual Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest financial literacy program for girls in the nation. Started

at a local event in Oklahoma in 1917, the program now is the leading business and entrepreneurial program run by girls, funding activities, community service and leadership projects during the year. The Cookie Program also helps girls who participate in building leadership and money management skills, as well as teaches them business ethics. In 2010, over three million girls sold 198 million boxes to support Girl Scouting. To mark the Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary, a new member of the Girl Scout Cookie family has been added―Savannah Smiles, a lemony delight cookie that pays homage to Girl Scout founder, Juliette Gordon Low who was born in Savannah, Georgia. “Many customers would love to buy Girl Scout Cookies, but many can only buy one or two boxes because they only have a certain amount of cash on them, or they have to walk by the booth entirely because they have none on hand,” said David Corey, Director of

Retail and Product Sales. “We have obtained 1,000 of these devices to start for the troops. We hope that this will open up Girl Scout Cookies to new customers, increase the number of boxes per customer from the loyal patrons that come out every year to the booths, and teach the girls about credit cards and the importance of good credit―because Girl Scout Cookies really is financial literacy in action.” Credit card readers aren’t the only hi-tech offering that Girl Scouts are using for their cookies sales this year, there’s also the Little Brownie Bakers Girl Scout Cookie Locator app. The app lets customers easily locate a cookie booth near them where they can purchase the famous cookies. The Little Brownie Bakers Girl Scout Cookie Locator app works on iPhones™, BlackBerrys™ and Android™ phones. rovia High School in 1973. After graduation he joined the United States Army and served until 1976. After a few years working in construction he reenlisted in the Army and served until 1994. After leaving the military, Spicer bought a big rig truck and crisscrossed the country for eight years. “I’ve been through 48 states and Canada” he proudly stated. Since 2002 he has been a full time volunteer with most of his volunteer hours spent in Monrovia. Spicer is the current volunteer of the year for the city of Monrovia. He was also named a “Who’s Who of America’s Neighborhoods” by Neighborhoods USA at their conference in Alaska last year. Spicer reported that even though he was part of Monrovia’s delegation to the conference, he paid his own way. Spicer’s list of volunteer activities is a long one. He was appointed to Monrovia’s Planning Commission in 2010. He has worked with the city on its Monrovia Area Partnership (MAP) program which he describes as a way to “encourage citizens to improve their own neigh-

borhoods.” MAP works in specifically designated areas in the city. Spicer is also a member of the Board of the Duarte Hawks, a football program for youth aged 6 and up. For the last 3 or 4 years he has also been a Red Cross Volunteer. He also serves on the Board of Make A Difference Day in Monrovia. The members of Monrovia’s City Council have each “adopted” an individual school in the district. “I plan to ‘adopt’ Bradoaks,” Spicer said. It is a logical choice as he has been a volunteer with the schools Watch Dogs Program. Watch Dogs are “Dads of Great Students” and Spicer said this is quite true of him as his ten year old daughter, Lailah, is a student at that school and “very bright.” Lailah is Spicer’s youngest child. He has two other children, Savannah, 19, who as the Student Liaison to the City Council last year, and Lawrence, 13, who is involved in the Leadership Program at Clifton Middle School. Spicer noted that he and his wife, Delphine will

At its December 13, 2011 meeting, the Community Services Commission voted to recommend to the City Council what is referred to as the Minimalist Plan, “with the additional recommendation not to open the loop of the Lower Clamshell Truck Trail to public access where the Brauton’s milkvetch is present until further evaluation to ensure that the proper mitigation measures are implemented, and without limitation on education and knowledge of access made available to Monrovians.” This recommendation was made after lengthy public input and discussion among the members of the commission. This option was one of four presented to the commission. Simply stated, the options were: 1) No Project/

No RMP (Resource Management Plan), 2) Minimalist Plan, 3) Reduced Trails Network, and 4) The Project as described in the EIR. It should come as no surprise that there is already a great deal of discussion in the community regarding this minimalist plan and its impact on the residents who live adjacent to the Preserve and to their property. There is also concern about the potential of problems with the plan as recommended by the commission and the grants the city has received which allowed it to acquire part of the land for the Wilderness Preserve. While several letters have been sent via email among various concerned community members, this newspaper has received only one to date on the issue. It appears below. Other members of the community who would like to express

their opinions on this are incourged to send us a letter to the editor.

A Letter from a Concerned Citizen:

I have no problem with public access to the Wilderness Preserve in a controlled, unpromoted way. I ,and many others, including Native Americans, have been walking through that land for hundreds, if not thousands of years. But never a Chantry Flats or Azusa playground. So Option Minimal Usage was good from the get go, despite its lack of direction for the next administration, except it trampled unwittingly on courteous trail rerouting for those who lived there before A&B and buy-outs. It's big sky country compared to average neighborhoods, so why not reroute Cloverleaf public access plans and anything else well around private property? Maybe time to bury the hatchet? The Original Minimal Usage Plan passed by the Council, be-

fore the lawsuit for an EIR, well, was fundamentally good. The EIR made the plan stronger, although the EIR's consultant authors when designating "no significant impacts" in some cases and lack of mitigation in some circumstances make the entire document questionable, and State and Federal Agencies picked up on it. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT COUNCIL MEMBERS READ THE STATE & FEDERAL COMMENTS LETTERS TO THE DRAFT EIR IN DETAIL and evaluate whether those comments were incorporated into the Final EIR and RMP which will be presented to them.I hope some important consideration will be given to potential grant violations. Such violations may give the state grounds to recall these grants. The state’s recent action regarding redevelopment funding shows its recessionary impulse to recall money from cities and other local entities. Nancy Zack

Wallace ( Wally) E. Hage 6/30/1928 - 1/9/2012 We deeply regret to report that a dear friend and columnist for this newspaper passed away Jan 9. Wally Hage had just the right combination of humor, life experience and wisdom to be a well-loved community newspaper columnist. Born in Portland Oregon June 30, 1928, he spend 32 years working for AT&T and served in the Marine Corps from 1952- 1954 during the Korean War. Wally was happyily married for 63 years to his wonderful wife who was often the inspiration for many a column. He is survived by his wife, 3 sons, five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Rachel. The family asks that in lui of flowers tha a doantion be made in Wally’s name to: The Rachel Ann Hage NeuroOncology Fund Children's Hospital of Los Angeles 4650 Sunset Blvd. MS #54 Los Angeles, Ca 90027 We would like to publish one more column from Wally’s vast archive. This column we, and his family feel is most appropriate. We will miss you Wally: “Creative” Writing By Wally Hage My friends and colleagues often ask me how I got started writing…to answer this question, I have to go back to when I was a youngster doing sidewalk writing with chalk. Today, it’s called graffiti. My initial writing looked something like this…WH + PC. Sometimes I would draw a heart around it and an arrow through the letters and it might be titled “True Love.” Carving my initials into the bark of trees was another graffiti-like activity that I frequently pursued. Also putting my handprints and initials into newly poured concrete was a unique and most enjoyable writing style until my neighbor referred the matter and the cost for

repair to my Mom. After my Mom took the matter into her own hands, I lost all further interest in continuing my signature-like graffiti activities. During my early school days, I specialized in the art of temporary tattooing. That is, I was writing on my hands and arms. This type of writing had a lot to do with the grades I received as I progressed from the third grade to the fourth grade. Today it is referred to as crib notes. As I grew older, I be-

came more diversified in my writing style. I wrote in the dust on the piano in our living room and in the wintertime, our fogged-up windows and mirrors were just too irresistible to pass up leaving a message. This generally triggered a quick reaction from my Mom, causing me to “do time.” In other words, I had to clean the windows and mirrors before I could sit down to dinner, and often it was necessary to stand while eating because it was painful to sit. The creative signs that I printed on my bedroom door such as “Do not disturb on school days” or “I can not clean my room today as I’m busy” also caused that same part of my body to hurt. I soon acquired a special artistry for writing on dirty cars. My Dad wasn’t much for washing his car, so I could easily autograph it on the hood and occa-

sionally print a message and draw artwork on the side of his car for the neighbors to read. Some of them referred to this as disgusting finger painting, particularly when I did the writing and artwork on their cars. As I entered high school, I developed a unique talent for writing my own absence excuses. This writing soon became a profitable after school venture as I created elaborate excuse notes for other students. That is, until the high school principal suggested that I had better limit my writing to school work. His threat to give my Mom and me a signature verification test was reason for me to look for other after school employment opportunities. Once married, my story writing really came into full bloom. I developed quite a knack for writing memos to creditors explaining that the check was in the mail and occasionally a note to the bank questioning their bookkeeping accuracy for any checks that were returned for insufficient funds. I was much less successful when I sent the Draft Board a notice to please take my name off of their mailing list. Upon receiving my carefully crafted request, I was invited by Uncle Sam to spend a few years in the military with the U.S. Marine Corps. Later on, my creative writing was given quite a challenge when our children began to go to school. My book report writing for one of my children did not last long as he complained that the grades that I received were failing. Soon after his grades came out, his teacher sent home a note with my son requesting a conference with both of us. My son refused to go, saying, “Why should I go, Dad? You wrote those dumb reports.”

Baldwin Stocker Elementary Nominated for Blue Ribbon Status

Larry Spicer: New Face on Monrovia Council Continued from page 21 celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary on February 8. Spicer has been appointed to fill the seat left temporarily vacant while Council Member Clarence Shaw is on active duty with the Army Reserve. In some ways it is appropriate that Spicer be the appointee as he and Shaw first became friends when working together in the military. Spicer was working full time with the National Guard at which time Shaw was also associated with the Guard. Throughout his career in the military Spicer had been assigned to logistics, which is also Shaw’s area of expertise. Spicer described logistics as supplying “everything it takes to support the troops.” When asked what he saw as challenges in Monrovia, Spicer was quick to point out several areas of concern. He said he may be new to the council, but he is already aware of many of the issues it will be facing in the next few months. “Since the council appointed me last month, I have been receiving all the reports the other members of the council have received from the city,” Spicer said. “I know I am new to the coun-

cil, but I am working hard and studying the issues. I am already aware of many of these issues.” The first he noted was Redevelopment, a topic often

in the news recently. His first concern was slightly different from those expressed by other elected official. “What about the employees of our Redevelopment Agency,” he said. When it was pointed out that his fellow Council Members had been focussed on the completion of the Gold Line through Monrovia and the future of the proposed maintenance yard in Monrovia, Spicer said he felt this was also important, but that he was also worried about

the employees saying, “This is their livelihood.” Spicer went on to explain that he knew this would be a difficult situation as the city was facing budget issues. He said the budget was another of the issues about which he was concerned He pointed out that his volunteer activities have ensured that he was up to date on many things the council will be facing in the new few months. For example, he noted that as a member of the Planning Commission he was already aware of the concerns of the community regarding the Wilderness Preserve as the Planning Commission had approved the Environmental Impact Report on the preserve. The council will also be appointing a new city manager soon. “I served on the Community Board in the selection process for the new Police Chief last year,” Spicer said, “So I am aware of the process and prepared to participate in the selection of the City Manager.” “I have been reading everything the city has sent me,” Spicer said. He may be new, but Spicer plans to hit the ground running.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today announced the selection of 35 public schools as California’s nominees to the 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools Program (BRSP), which recognizes some of the high-

est-performing and most improved schools in the nation. “These schools all share a deep commitment to the education and wellbeing of their students,” said Torlakson. “We’ve recognized them on the state level, and now I hope

their outstanding work and remarkable progress will be further spotlighted nationally.” Balwin Stocker in Arcadia is one of 35 schools in the state to be nominated.
