CREATING BEAUTIFUL POOL PROJECTS

JAMES LOYACANO Designer

BUYING A SWIMMING POOL is a unique (and often challenging) experience for the average client. Everyone knows how to buy an auto, a home, furnishings, appliances and electronics ... but a swimming pool? That is a completely different, and more complicated product all together. Who do you trust when it comes to subjects of design, size, construction techniques, equipment, circulation and cleaning systems? Not to mention cost! What’s the value of a swimming pool in your back yard, and who determines that value? Everyone has heard the horror stories associated with swimming pool construction, and those stories are not without merit. Our approach is to educate the client as we navigate through the design process. There are tangible steps that can ensure the value, quality and beauty of a swimming pool project, and we feel uniquely qualified to educate our clients in a way that makes them capable of

taking those precautions. We are available to negotiate on their behalf with swimming pool contractors to ensure these vital steps are taken. Most clients who decide to build a swimming pool project have saved hard-earned money for years to make this dream come true. It is our mission and intention to help protect them through this endeavor. We have designed custom swimming pool projects and settings for over 35 years. Beginning in southern Louisiana and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast we discovered the conservative beauty of the South. Here on the Gulf Coast, in the early 1980s, brick and blue stone settings were the popular, driving influences for many of our clients. Rectangular and Grecian pools dominated the design marketplace. Starting in the mid-’80s our design team was fortunate to begin designing along Southern California’s majestic coastline.

Our clients were located in enclaves such as Newport Beach, Mission Viejo, Laguna Beach, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and Coto de Caza. The Old Spanish influence as well as the ever-changing demographic of the Pacific coast began to blend with our Gulf Coast designs and we found something special in that combination. Our California clients gave us the ability to expand design ideas in a most unique way. The fusion of these cultures, lifestyles and our design disciplines have allowed us to create truly beautiful swimming pool projects.

CUSTOM ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS WITH A PASSION FOR CRAFTSMANSHIP

RICHARD L. OURSO, CKD, CAPS Founder/Owner

225.291.8588 theoldemill.com info@theoldemill.com

We’ve been waiting for this ... 2018 marks a significant benchmark and turning point for me, and for our company. From the first time I arrived at a custom cabinet shop at 16 years old, I became inspired and enchanted by the craftsmanship and details of the trade. This year marks my 40th anniversary handbuilding cabinets, mill work and furniture. My “WHY” for The Olde Mill is to design and build the finest antique architectural options from 100-plus-year-old longleaf pine that is reclaimed wood for beams, shelves, mantels, door headers, frames and posts. Our beams are solidly constructed but much lighter and easier to install. These design options add a warm, classic style that fits most homes and retail and commercial spaces. We are custom designers. Many in the industry are “stock” designers. If it is does not come off a shelf in a cardboard box or from a home center, it does not go in to their designs. We create and build custom architectural designs using a level of craftsmanship

lost in many products manufactured today. Our design practice has expanded far beyond kitchens and baths. We consult on the entire home, either through Ourso Designs or by manufacturing reclaimed and repurposed wood cabinetry, pilasters to divide spaces, and elements that are timeless throughout the home. Our floating shelves have grown in popularity in not only kitchens, but also bathrooms, bedrooms, dens, outdoor spaces and where space is limited but storage is a must. It’s the “hands on” process I enjoy most, working all levels of design in the construction industry, first as a craftsman, then as a designer and now as a manufacturer for five years. We appreciate the home builders, renovators, architects, carpenters, homeowners, designers and those who have given us this opportunity to grow and prosper. They have become our mentors, partners, friends and clients, guiding us into this endeavor with a promising future. We are truly grateful!

ABOUT THE PROJECT This beach retreat was a renovation project for a local family. Every cabinet, beam, floating shelf and window frame was manufactured by The Olde Mill. The client wanted the first-floor parking area to be transformed into a living & kitchen area to reflect the tranquil and elegant feel of their home, and to entertain family and friends. The structural pilings were a design challenge, and we transformed it into one of the most creative features using reclaimed wood cabinetry and mill work at the base and larger, stacked beams at the top to draw the eye upward with a contrasting finish. Big River Construction was our partnering contractor. Marsha Lewis was the interior designer making material selection.

NEW AMEDISYS HEADQUARTERS EVOKES LIGHT, OPENNESS AND COMPANY VALUES

BUSINESS REPORT, January 30, 2018 | BusinessReport.com

AMEDISYS PRESIDENT AND CEO Paul Kusserow’s vision for the company’s new headquarters was to offer our employees a collaborative, open work environment with plenty of light and lots of energy. The open space makes it easier for employees to interact with each other and enhances the flow of information and teamwork. Colleagues can turn to each other for advice or assistance and interaction is generally more frequent and informal. In addition to work stations, the space features a number of “neighborhoods” for collaborative working and impromptu meetings, and spaces for more private discussions, if needed. Employee feedback was solicited on design, workstations and services offered—such as yoga, mobile car wash, healthy market and dry cleaning. Since Amedisys is in 34 states across the country, the design includes regional

landscapes from the communities it serves, iconic “street signs” such as Broadway and Route 66, and patient photos. The Amedisy values (Service, Passion, Integrity, Respect, Innovation and Talent) are also prominently displayed.

A COLLABORATIVE AND VIBRANT WORKPLACE Not only did Amedisys want to transform the physical space, it also wanted to transform the way the Baton Rouge team viewed coming to work and how they worked. The building was previously used as a call center and was sectioned off with walls, dark hallways, closed off rooms and was difficult to navigate. The new building features a lot of glass and light throughout the space to visually represent the company’s transparent culture (the few executive offices are all glass and available to any employee to

reserve for meetings when not in use). The building includes a training room to accommodate 100 people, three coffee bars, a wellness room with workout equipment, a large break room with healthy market vending and huge patient photos throughout to connect the corporate team with the company’s mission of taking care of its patients where they most want to be—in the home. In fact, Amedisys has recently leased the space next door for expansion, including moving the Baton Rouge home health and hospice care centers to American Way. It’s a collaborative and vibrant workplace where employees feel excited and energized to work.
