THEO MILO

The indications that Bald Head Island, North Carolina, offers something other than a typical beach vacation are pretty clear from the onset.

There are no cars here,

so travel is limited to golf carts, bikes or your own two feet. You won’t find any hotels, high rises, chain restaurants or theme parks. In many ways, the island’s character is better defined by what it doesn’t have, than what it does. This, as islanders will tell you, is the heart of its charm. For the uninitiated, however, the “omissions” that make Bald Head Island so refreshing can make planning your first trip a little intimidating. Questions begin popping up like mushrooms after a warm rain: If I can only get there by boat, how should I pack? Where is there to stay? If you get around by golf cart, where do I find one? What is there to do? And most importantly: What on Earth is there to eat? Fortunately, as long-time visitors attest, it’s not as hard to get here, get around and get fed as it might initially seem. In fact, as the saying goes, you’ll likely find it much harder to leave. First things first: Make it easy on yourself and pack as if you’re flying. The island has a fullservice grocery store with fresher meat, produce and seafood than you likely can get back home, and there are numerous restaurants offering everything from casual fare to fine cuisine. All that unwieldy stuff you’ll undoubtedly need on your vacation—bikes, beach chairs, giant umbrellas and the like—can be rented from island vendors. They even have things you didn’t

know you’d need, like standup paddleboards, fishing tackle and horse shoes. The next thing to keep in mind is that you really can’t go wrong wherever you choose to stay on Bald Head Island. From small cottages and condos perfect for couples to sprawling oceanfront estates that house a dozen or more guests, you’ll find great options. No matter where you’re staying, the beach is never more than a 10-minute cart ride away. Speaking of carts, typically there will be one or more waiting for you at your accommodations (check with your rental agency). If you’re only coming over for the day or need an extra cart, you can easily rent one just a stone’s throw from the ferry landing.

Trams are fuel-efficient miniature trucks that pull passenger carriages behind them. They are especially adept at maneuvering the island’s narrow roads or wynds (pronounced “wind” as in what you’d do to a watch).

Transportation to your accommodations is included in the cost of your ferry ticket. Once you’ve reserved your home, simply call for ferry reservations and at the same time book a tram to take you to where you’re staying (depending on your rental company, this might be handled for you—just ask to confirm). Once you’ve arrived on the island, learned your tram assignment, and claimed your luggage so that it can be loaded onto the tram, you’ll be whisked away in a matter of minutes to your accommodations. As for what there is to see and do on the island, you’ll be surprised by how happening

such a small place can be. At the Smith Island Museum at the base of Old Baldy you can purchase tickets to climb the lighthouse, enjoy a historic tour, or simply peruse the gift shop. The island’s other big nonprofit group, the Bald Head Island Conservancy, offers an array of activities, events and outings year-round for families. Going on a Turtle Walk to see a loggerhead lay its eggs or watch hatchlings make their

way to the sea, a favorite summer pastime, is just the beginning. The Conservancy’s new state-of-the-art Barrier Island Study Center and its outstanding programs give residents and visitors the chance to become engaged and informed “citizen scientists.” Where the nonprofits leave off, various island vendors pick up, with outdoor adventures, ghost walks, art lessons, camps and more. If you’re renting, be sure to request a temporary membership in both the Bald Head Island Club and the Shoals Club so you can enjoy the full range of recreational and dining options available. The showstopper at the Bald Head Island Club is its magnificent 18-hole golf course, one of the best in the Carolinas. Rounding out the Club’s sports facilities are tennis courts, a spacious pool, a workout room, and a croquet greensward so acclaimed that it hosted the world championships last fall. Complementing the Bald Head Island Club is the oceanfront Shoals Club. Cascading terraces lead down to the Shoals Club’s pools, while an adjacent wooden boardwalk extends to Cape Fear and Frying Pan Shoals. Nearby locker rooms and poolside food

and beverage service make it convenient to spend all day by the shore. If you’re undecided about when to visit, consider coming during a special event. October’s Grapes & Hops Festival, the Labor Day Music Extravaganza and the Old Baldy Foundation’s Pirate Weekend all have a loyal legion of followers. No occasion is more highly anticipated than our annual July Fourth Golf Cart Parade, where families decorate their carts in outrageous ways and compete for “best in show” bragging rights. It’s truly a sight that has to be seen to be believed. Seasoned islanders know that the “shoulder seasons”—March through May and October through December—are also among the best times to experience the island. The weather is typically mild and you can have an entire stretch of beach or marsh or maritime forest all to yourself. If you’re a resident or longtime visitor to Bald Head Island, you know firsthand what a special place this is, no matter the time of year. If you’ve never been, it’s high time for you to pick a date, indulge your sense of adventure, and make plans now to leave your cares on the mainland.

Just for Kids Camps and Recreation

Budding Naturalists, a camp for children ages 4-6, gives kids a chance to catch bugs and critters, hold snakes and make island-oriented arts and crafts. For rising 2nd-6th graders who want to get out and experience nature on Bald Head Island, Junior Scientists is perfect. Kayaking, nature hikes, crabbing and shell collecting are only a few of the activities available. Kids will learn about sea turtles, plant and animal identification, and Bald Head Island’s unique ecosystem. Conservancy Corps gives tweens and teens ages 11-14 a great way to get involved with the Conservancy’s efforts to protect Bald Head Island. Campers split their time between the field and lab, collecting data and analyzing it to help further the Conservancy’s research. Children’s World at RiverLanding1524, located near the harbor, is home to the popular Children’s Treasure Hunt, which takes kids ages 5-12 aboard the “pirate ship Lunasea” as they solve riddles, sing songs and use science and nature to piece together a map that leads to buried treasure. Also featured at Children’s World are the alwayspopular Ghost Walks (see page 28 for more details), Dune Dog Hot Dogs, Wright Ship Puppet Theater, Family Bingo Night and more. The Sunset Summer Celebration, also from the folks at RiverLanding1524, happens every Wednesday evening during the summer at Beach Access #6 in the harbor. Enjoy a spectacular sunset, weather permitting, as well as a fire for making s’mores, storytelling, family games and more.

JASON FRYE

The Bald Head Island Conservancy conducts a wide range of outstanding children’s camps throughout the summer.

The Shoals Club Recreation Department offers a variety of familyfriendly activities throughout the season including family movies, volleyball and bocce tournaments, games around the pool and tiedyeing T-shirts. The Bald Head Island Club offers a fun, safe and individualized summer camp program for children 5-12 years old. Camps include weekly golf and tennis instruction, daily swimming, arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor games, team activities, movies and field trips. The Club also offers Junior Golf Camps and Junior Tennis Programs throughout the summer. All About Art offers a variety of art programs for kids of all ages, including a half-day art camp, and drawing, photography and basket weaving classes, to name a few. Mermaid and dragon painting classes are ideal for older children, while “precious impressionists” is geared toward younger kids. Private classes are also available. All About Art offers adult classes throughout the year as well.

Nature Programs In addition to hikes, kayaking trips and birding adventures, the Bald Head Island Conservancy offers a wide range of kid and familyfriendly programs. Sea Turtle Patrol lets you ride along with Conservancy staff or interns as they patrol the beach for nesting sea turtles. Participation is limited to two people, so reserve your spot early; this is a must-have experience for nature lovers. You can join Conservancy staff at the Village Creek Access on North Bald Head Wynd to learn about crabbing and cast netting. Crab lines, bait, cast nets, tips and tricks, and a lesson in the importance of marsh ecology are included.

joints but doesn’t impact the spin of the ball.

SPORTS AND RECREATION Hit the Links The golf course at the Bald Head Island Club is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful in the Southeast. The George Cobb-designed course winds through the forest, under the eye of Old Baldy, and out onto the dune ridge where a 180˚ view of the ocean greets you for the final holes. In 2010 the course was renovated by Tim Cate, and includes redesigned bunkers, expanded fairways and the widespread use of native plants in the landscaping. The course has a high slope rating—143-115 for the men’s tees, 144118 for women’s—and the ocean breeze can be tricky, but the beauty and challenge of the course will make for a fun day. A downloadable yardage map showing a view of each hole is available on the Bald Head Island Club website at www.bhiclub.net. Can’t-miss holes include Nos. 6 and 7, where Old Baldy watches over the course, and 16, a par three set high on the dune ridge with sweeping ocean views.

During the summer season, daily clinics, social activities, private lessons and programs for children three and up are available with one of the United States Professional Tennis Association pros. A Tennis Pro Shop, located near the pool, features men’s and women’s apparel, Babolat tennis racquets, balls and accessories, and offers racquet stringing services. Hours for the tennis courts and pro shop vary by season.

Try Your Hand at Croquet The championship croquet greensward at the Bald Head Island Club regularly hosts United States Croquet Association tournaments and is the home greensward of several of the nation’s top players. In 2012 the Solomon Cup World Championship was held here. Don’t let this scare you off; croquet at the Bald Head Island Club is open to beginners as well as seasoned veterans. If you’ve never played or just want to hone your skills, lessons and clinics are available and can be tailored to your skill level. All-white attire is required, although light-colored (tan) attire is permissible for guests. Check with the staff in the Golf Shop for availability, to arrange lessons, sign up for a clinic or to rent equipment.

Take a Dip in the Pool

Swimming in the ocean is great, but sometimes a pool is what you need. On Bald Head Island you’ll find two pools—one at the Bald Head Island Club, and one at the Shoals Club.

An on-site practice facility provides a space where golfers can warm up, and PGA professionals on staff can give lessons to youth and adults of all skill levels. A clubhouse that offers men’s and women’s golf apparel, golf equipment and shoes, as well as club fitting and regripping services, is open year-round. Club rentals are also available for a fee. Golfers must have a temporary or full membership or be the guest of a member to enjoy golf privileges. A “Stay and Play” package is also available, giving you discounted accommodations and unlimited access to the course for the length of your stay on Bald Head Island.

Tennis, Anyone? The four courts at the Bald Head Island Club’s Tennis Center are surfaced with MondoTen, a rubberized coating that’s easy on the 22

At the Shoals Club, a lap pool overlooks a shallow children’s pool and fountain area. Poolside food and beverage service is available from the Sandbar Grille. Towels, showers, changing areas and restrooms are available. An adjacent beach volleyball court and bocce ball court are also available. The Shoals Club staff offers water aerobics, water Zumba and parent/tot swimming lessons. The Shoals Club pools are open to members, guests and temporary members only. The pools are closed November through March, and hours vary by season. The Bald Head Island Club’s heated 25-meter pool includes a slide for children 10 and under, showers, shaded poolside seating, towels, an adjacent restaurant, playground and beach volleyball court. Bald Head Island Club full or temporary membership is required to use the facility. The pool is open from April to October. Daily lap swim times allow swimmers to get their laps in, and water aerobics classes provide a great, low-impact workout. Pool hours vary by season.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES Explore the Beaches Bald Head Island’s beautiful beaches beg you to build sandcastles, stroll, take a swim or just unwind. With 14 miles of pristine beaches, you shouldn’t have a problem finding your perfect spot. South Beach features long stretches of sand and calmer waters,

perfect for walking and spending the day with the family. East Beach is ideal for boogie boarding and surfing. Can’t-miss spots include Cape Fear Point, where Frying Pan Shoals extends 30 miles offshore, and the wide stretch of sand where West Beach meets South Beach, a great area for beachcombing. Public beach access points are plentiful, but please note that the island does not offer public restroom facilities near the beach. If you have a Shoals Club membership, use their beach access and pick up a towel, umbrella and chair on your way to the beach. Indoor and outdoor shower facilities and an indoor changing area and restroom are also available here. Beach equipment rentals, including umbrellas, chairs and beach games like bocce, croquet and bean bag toss, are available through Riverside Adventure Company on a daily and weeklong basis. others for a two-hour tour of the Cape Fear River and along South Beach for views of the island seen by few other visitors. Memberships in the Bald Head Island Sailing Club are available on a temporary or annual basis, allowing experienced sailors to reserve boats for use during their stay.

Ride a Bike The island’s gentle coastal terrain offers bicyclists an easy pedal, but with more than 15 miles of roadway to ride, more experienced cyclists can get their fill, too. Bike rentals by the hour, day or week are available through two island outlets: Coastal Urge and Riverside Adventure Company. Coastal Urge’s beach cruisers come with a basket, perfect for toting your towel to the beach. Fitness bikes, tandem bikes, kids’ bikes, trailers and baby joggers are also available. Kayak the Creeks Imagine gliding through the creek, as silent as the grass around you, coming within feet of egrets and herons, or hearing the call of an osprey circling overhead. The creeks on Bald Head Island are easily accessed by kayak and canoe, and experienced naturalists and expert guides can show you the ropes. Even if you’ve never dipped a paddle in the water, you’ll learn to love experiencing nature like this.

The Sail Shop’s fleet of kayaks and canoes fill the marsh on any given day. Their guides know their way through the creeks and can help beginner kayakers get started. Self-guided tours are also available. Kayak trips with the Sail Shop include paddles on Bald Head, Fishing and No Name Creeks, and some of their most popular tours are at sunset or under a rising full moon.

Sail Away Experience the thrill of sailing during your visit, whether you’re new to this sport or a seasoned sailor. The Sail Shop offers sailing experiences for any skill level. For kids, learning to sail on the creek in one of the Opti Prams will be a memory they’ll never forget. More experienced youth may want to try sailing on the river in one of the 420s, a larger, but still manageable, sailboat designed to help young sailors reach their next skill level. Two 26’ J-80 Olympic-class sailboats, Jive and Joyride, are ideal for adult instruction from the basics up to certification through US Sailing. For a more relaxed, introductory experience, try one of the Fun Sails aboard Jive or Joyride. An instructor will take you and up to four

If you want something a little different, try a Pedego electric bike. These battery-powered bikes can reach cruising speed with the twist of a wrist, perfect for tackling a hill or just taking it easy. Pedego bikes are found at Riverside Adventure Company. place at the Board Room, located in the harbor. Paddleboards are available for daily or weekly rental and Coastal Urge will deliver them to your house and provide basic instructions there.

Hang Ten Did you know that the North Carolina coast offers some of the best surfing on the Eastern Seaboard? Bring your board or rent a long or short board from the Sail Shop and catch some waves on East Beach, the best spot on the island for surfing. Boogie boards are also available. Always wanted to try surfing but don’t know where to start? The Sail Shop’s Surf Camp provides group and private instruction that will have you “dropping in” on your first lesson.

Fly High on a Kiteboard If skimming across the surf, shooting over the lip of a wave and catching some air, all while harnessed to a giant kite, sounds like fun, then Bald Head Island has the perfect thing for you—kiteboarding.

MILLIE HOLLOMAN

Coastal Urge’s kiteboarding lessons are ideal for those new to the sport. Start with a 90-minute lesson on land, where you learn flying techniques with a trainer kite, then graduate up to Level 1 lessons that will teach you to launch your board and get you on the water. Level 2 teaches board skills and riding techniques. Customized coaching is available for advanced riders. All lessons include rental of required equipment. For those who want to experience the thrill of kiteboarding on land, Coastal Urge also offers land traction kiting lessons. A traction kite can pull you across the sand and teach you the basics of large kite maneuvering. Traction kites are suitable for all ages.

Walk with the Sea Turtles Try Standup Paddleboarding One of the island’s most beautiful and unspoiled environments is the marsh with its miles of winding creeks, and standup paddleboarding (SUP) is one of the best ways to discover its secrets. SUP is a relatively new sport that’s gaining converts with every trip through the marsh. Paddlers use large boards resembling surfboards and a paddle to maneuver. There’s a learning curve to standing on the board and gaining balance, but it’s fairly quick to master, making this sport popular with all ages and degrees of experience with water sports. Once you’re up and paddling there’s plenty to explore. Try Lighthouse Creek, an easy loop that puts you in the shadow of Old Baldy and gives you a chance to get your feet under you. For a longer paddle, follow Bald Head Creek to the boathouse that used to serve as a supply point and storage building for the lighthouses and U.S. Lifesaving Service Station on the island. And if you’re a fisherman, don’t feel left out; join the growing SUP fishing community with one of the specialized boards designed with fishing in mind. Casting a line and reeling in a fish are a challenge anyway, but on a paddleboard, they’re an adventure. Coastal Urge is your headquarters for all things SUP on Bald Head Island—rentals, guided excursions and instructional sessions take 26

Did you know that scores of loggerhead sea turtles return to Bald Head Island each summer to lay their eggs? The Bald Head Island Conservancy is dedicated to protecting these amazing creatures and their Turtle Walk program gives you the chance to experience them close up. Turtle Walks begin with a brief classroom presentation, after which Conservancy turtle interns take you to the beach for a lesson in beach biology while you wait to hear from one of the Turtle Patrols. When they’ve located a nesting turtle, the group heads off to watch the turtle lay her nest. Not every group sees a giant loggerhead turtle lay her clutch of eggs, but if you’re lucky enough to see it, you’ll not soon forget it. Turtle Walks start around the first week of June and run nightly croquet/tennis through the first week of August. The Conservancy focuses on nesting mothers during this time, but switches to nest monitoring from midAugust through late September. Volunteer nest monitors—often Bald Head Island residents—watch nests 24 hours a day, seven days a week as they draw close to hatching. They’re watching for the nest to “boil,” where the sand above the eggs churns and moves as the turtle hatchlings dig their way out. Nest monitors and Conservancy staff keep predators away from the hatchlings and help them out to sea.

Seeing a nesting sea turtle or watching a nest boil and release a hundred turtle hatchlings are once-in-a-lifetime experiences, so be sure to become a member of the Conservancy and participate in a Turtle Walk during your stay on Bald Head Island.

Go Fish Fishing on the island can take you from tuna fishing offshore to reeling in red drum in the creeks to bringing home a flounder hooked in the surf. From the shore, flounder, red drum, blue fish, mullet, pompano and more wait to be caught. On the creeks you’ll find speckled trout, grey trout, flounder, red drum, blue fish and spots. Offshore fishing trips can put you on grouper, mackerel, tuna, wahoo, dolphin and even some sailfish. A variety of outfitters and guides provide boats and gear, and can pick you up in the harbor. Both the Bald Head Island Conservancy and the Sail Shop offer instruction, so if you’re new to fishing or just want to know where to go, they can help put you on the fish. The Conservancy’s Fishing Bald Head Island program offers tips, techniques and tricks for fishing enthusiasts, and the Thad Wester Fishing School draws crowds every fall for instruction from expert fishermen.

The Bald Head Island Conservancy offers several organized hikes and nature walks to give visitors a chance to learn about the importance of the maritime forest and explore it alongside an experienced naturalist. All of the Conservancy’s hikes are family-friendly and are offered throughout the year. On the Bluff Island Hike, offered by the Sail Shop, you’re guaranteed a day of adventure. Groups access Bluff Island via kayak or skiff, then spend time exploring the “wilds” of Bluff Island and Kim's Island. Be sure to bring your camera and binoculars as the views on Cape Creek are unparalleled.

Discover Geocaching Want a family-friendly outdoor game that’s one part treasure hunt and one part island tour? Try your hand at geocaching. In geocaching you use a GPS-enabled device to track down a box or “cache” hidden at a set of coordinates. Caches range in size from film canisters to larger boxes and contain a sign-in sheet and “treasures” like toys, key chains, figurines and even trackable items. You can go to www.geocaching.com, create an account and upload the dozen geocaches hidden on Bald Head Island to your phone. Riverside Adventure Company offers a GPS Scavenger Hunt that sends you around the island to a preprogrammed series of coordinates. Prizes are awarded weekly for the most accurate answers.

The Sail Shop’s fishing programs are designed to get you started and keep you hooked on the sport. Surf fishing along East and South Beaches gives beginners a great introduction to fishing, while more experienced fishing enthusiasts will enjoy the challenge of exploring Bald Head and Cape Creeks, either in a kayak, canoe or flat-bottom creek skiff. Please note that a valid North Carolina fishing license is required for all persons over 16. Many charter boats carry blanket licenses that allow you to fish from the boat, but to fish on your own, you’ll need to purchase a fishing license. Licenses are available online at www. ncwildlife.org.

Take a Hike What better way to explore Bald Head Island’s environments than with a hike through the maritime forest, Middle Island or Bluff Island? Hikes vary from self-guided trails to tours led by naturalists from the Bald Head Island Conservancy and outdoorsmen (and women) from the Sail Shop. On Federal Road near the Maritime Market, the M. Kent Mitchell Nature Trail provides nearly 360˚ views of the marsh. Markers on the trail identify the flora. While you’re on the trail, if you’re still enough, a few of the bolder fiddler crabs may come out of their holes to investigate. Even if you’re just passing through, look for them at the base of the marsh grass where you’ll see more than one scurry into its hole.

JACK UPTON

The Bald Head Woods Maritime Forest Preserve offers several trailheads along either side of Federal Road. Trails range from easy to moderate and lead you through the woods, beneath an enchanting canopy of trees. Be sure to check out the Timmons Oak, one of the largest live oaks on Bald Head Island. And be sure to use bug spray.

Take a Historic Island Tour Did you know that Bald Head Island was home to a British fort and hospital in the Revolutionary War? That during the Civil War several Confederate gun emplacements helped secure the mouth of the river? That in the early 1900s visitors came to the island to hunt wild pigs? Find out the details of these stories and more on a Historic Tour from the Old Baldy Foundation. The tour gives you a glimpse into the history of Bald Head Island from its first appearance on maps in the 1500s to the Cape Fear Light in the 1950s to the development of the island in the 1980s. Tours originate on the island at the ferry terminal in the harbor (for on-island guests) and from Deep Point Marina (for day visitors). Each lasts approximately 1.5 hours. On your tour try to figure out which road on the island used to be a railroad bed where lighthouse keepers and U.S. Lifesaving Servicemen used rail cars to haul supplies.

Climb Old Baldy and Visit the Smith Island Museum One of the prettiest sights on Bald Head Island is Old Baldy rising above the trees, looking out over the sea, marsh and harbor, and greeting you when you arrive on the ferry. Did you know you can climb to the top and enjoy the view from above?

For those wanting to delve deeper into Bald Head Island’s past, the Smith Island Museum offers self-guided audio tours.

Old Baldy, North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse and one of three that once graced Bald Head Island, is only a short walk from the ferry landing. Admission to the Smith Island Museum of History allows you to climb Old Baldy’s 108 steps for an incomparable view of the island. While you’re there, take a look at the artifacts in the Smith Island Museum and learn more about Bald Head Island’s seafaring history or pick up a souvenir in the gift shop.

Walk with Ghosts Have you seen a ghostly figure walking at the edge of the marsh at night? It might be an apparition of Theodosia Burr or it may be one of the guides on RiverLanding1524’s Ghost Walk. This family-friendly ghost experience comes in two flavors—scary and really scary—but don’t be afraid to bring the kids, as they’ll love knowing the secrets and lore of Bald Head Island’s ghosts. Tours last about two hours and take you through more than 350 years of island history, introducing you to the tales of lighthouse keepers, life savers, pirates and river pilots that make up Bald Head Island legend.

Once a month, on the full moon, Bald Head Island residents, property owners and visitors come together for a beach party where they eat, drink and make merry. They also ‌

I’m an hour early when I show up for my first Howl at the Moon

party. I’ve heard they’re popular and I don’t want to miss out on any of the action. A number of carts and bicycles are already parked around Beach Access 39 on East Beach, so I find a spot, back in and make my way to the beach. Word spreads quickly on Bald Head Island, no matter if it’s word of a party or a turtle nest boiling, and I wonder how many of these cart owners are here for the Howl—folks who got wind of a party that’s a legend among residents, frequent visitors who plan their stays around the event, and the lucky vacationers who’ve found themselves in the right place at the right time. I find my answer when I see a small mountain of flip-flops forming on the slopes of the dune at the mouth of the beach access. I kick mine off, add them to the pile and step into the sand to join the fun, even if it hasn’t officially started.

Howl at the Moon parties have become something of a phenomenon on Bald Head Island. For years, residents and property owners held sunset/moonrise get-togethers that floated from location to location, but in January 2011, these informal gatherings became official. While Maritime Market Café Chef Greg Guthrie was heading home in the light of the almost-full moon, inspiration struck. He called his father-in-law Claude Pope, owner of the Market, and said, “Let’s have a party.” Less than 24 hours later, Chef Guthrie hauled a giant pot of chili onto the beach, the 42 original “Howlers” brought liquid refreshment and everyone shared. Huddled together on the windswept winter beach, they celebrated the sunset and howled when the moon rose. Just like that, a tradition was born.

(above) I arrived early for the Howl at the Moon party, thinking I’d be the first one on the beach. (left) I was wrong. A number of eager families made their way onto the sand with me. (right) I added my shoes to the growing pile and headed out to join the fun on East Beach.

36

Today is perfect for a beach party.

(left) Howl at the Moon parties are potluck, but the Maritime Market always supplies a delicious soup, stew or chowder. (above) Jennifer Day and Nicole Dreyfuss learned about the Howl at the Moon party that morning and decided they wanted to see for themselves what all the fuss was about. (top right) Partygoers camp out at the foot of the dune waiting to watch the moon rise.

It’s July 3rd and the island is bustling. For the 60-odd partygoers already on the beach— early, just like me—there’s nothing but blue sky, warm water and knee-high waves. Jennifer Day and Nicole Dreyfuss, sisters-in-law from Ohio, have claimed a table and stand watching their families play on the beach. They’ve both kicked off their shoes and are exploring the sand with their toes. “The thing we love about being on the island is that we really do unplug,” Day says. “We make no plans while we’re here. We wake up every morning and see where the day takes us.” Day and Dreyfuss clink their drinks together and laugh, glad that today took them to East Beach to Howl at the Moon. As we talk, the party has grown around us. A couple-dozen more people have kicked their shoes onto the slopes of Mt. Sandal and spread out blankets and half-circles of chairs. An energy is building. When Chef Guthrie and the Maritime Market staff emerge with two giant kettles of soup and what look like canoe paddles to stir them with, the excitement level jumps up a notch. In the space of a few minutes, people have started to arrive in earnest. Toddlers, teens, couples and families add their shoes to the pile. Kids sprint in every direction to explore the evening beach, some gravitate to the pair of caged turtle nests, some straight into the water, some to the kites set up down the beach, all with a parent or two in tow. The party has grown to 100 before the sponsors can even set up their keg of beer, and from the looks of the stream of people pouring out of the beach access, there’s no sign of the crowd shrinking any time soon.

haven 39

The Howl at the Moon

parties go on every month of the year at the full moon and twice a month if you’re lucky enough to be on Bald Head Island for a Blue Moon (go ahead and start planning now for the July 31, 2015 Blue Moon Howl, which promises to be a doozy). During the winter months, Howl parties draw smaller crowds (although never less than that inaugural 42), but during the summer, especially during the week of July 4th, the crowds swell to well over 500. This crowd looks to be a record and I ask Claude Pope, the unofficial master of ceremonies, how many people he thinks are here. He surveys the crowd, somehow tallying them. “400,” he says, “but don’t stop counting yet.”

Including the Popes, there are around 220 people who reside on Bald Head Island yearround. Of those full-timers, a contingent hasn’t missed a Howl at the Moon party yet. John Fisher is one of the regular attendees and I find him with a group of full-timers. After I introduce myself, they treat me like long-lost family and talk over each other to tell me their stories about life on Bald Head Island. “If you live out here, the party’s mandatory,” Fisher says with a smile. “Even in the winter,” someone adds. “Especially in the winter,” says Larry Lammert, former Mayor of Bald Head Island. “That’s when we’re out here wrapped in parkas and ski masks and everyone is so bundled up you can’t recognize them.” “All joking aside,” says Fisher, “for us old-timers, this is just another excuse to get together and celebrate the place that drew us together.” “Besides,” he continues, “there’s nothing prettier than the moon in winter. Except maybe the moon tonight.”

40

(top) Coastal Urge brought kites, the Maritime Market brought soup, and everyone else brought the party. (above) Claude Pope, owner of the Maritime Market, pours a cup of wine to toast the rising full moon.

(left/above) Summer nights are perfect for roasting marshmallows, as all kids (and some adults) know. (top right) The potluck was a success—there was something for everyone.

Fisher’s lived on the island since 2005, but he first visited as a Boy Scout in the mid 1960s, so he’s had plenty of opportunities to see the moon over the island. “Camping here as a kid was one of the first times I felt a real connection to a place,” he says. “When it was time to retire, my wife and I visited Bald Head and we both felt that connection. Now I live in a place I love, surrounded by great people and a beauty I can’t describe.” We lift our glasses to Fisher’s impromptu toast and all look skyward, first west, over the dunes where the sky is a brilliant yellow fading to deep blue overhead. Following the dome of the sky east, we find no moon yet, but a bank of clouds on the far horizon promises that when the moon does rise, and casts its first rays on us, it’ll be through a veil of clouds. I take my cue and move off through the crowd, where Claude catches my eye. He waves, opens his hands wide as if to show me the sea of people I’m standing in. He mouths “700” and gives me a thumbs up. In the dunes, the mountains of shoes are higher than a Boy Scout’s pup tent. The moon’s risen and is getting close to breaking free from the cloud cover when I stop to talk to Jay Walker and his teenage daughter, Katie. They’re down from Roanoke Rapids, N.C., for a visit with his brother. “We’ve been here a lot and I’ve seen a lot of moonrises on this island,” he says, “but this party, it’s something else.” Katie shifts on her blanket. “Will we…will people really howl?” she asks me, shyly. Throughout the evening, I’ve heard the question asked more than once. Sometimes it’s from children, but more often than not it’s from adults, the people who most need to live in the moment, the very people who need to howl at the moon.

haven 43

“Yes,” I tell them. They laugh. “Guess we’d better practice then,” the elder Walker says. They lift their heads and let out two soft howls, their voices blending. They laugh again, eyes to the sky. Before long, the first howls start in earnest. The moon’s orange glow lights a line of clouds and a few people cheer, but when its roundness breaks through and it hangs there like a grapefruit, everyone takes notice. I think it is John Fisher’s group who start the howl. They take it solo for a good 10 seconds before others join the chorus, then more, then more. Then, for a long moment, 700 people stand on the beach, looking east, howling their best howls. Some stand with their heads thrown back in sheer wild ecstasy (like the “barbaric yawp” Walt Whitman sounds “over the roofs of the world”). Some howl and laugh at the absurdity of it. Some try to outdo the others, which gets the dogs involved. Soon it goes from chorus to cacophony. And then it dies down. After we howl, everyone stands on the sand to watch the moon continue her climb. Then reluctantly, they pack up chairs, shake off blankets and steal one last glimpse of what brought them here. By the time I get to the mountain of shoes, it’s a hill again and mine aren’t hard to find. I slip them on and join the tide of people making for their golf carts before whisking away one by one through the bright, moonlit night.

(top) The bonfire attracted kids from up and down the beach. When the moon finally appeared, they all howled. (above) Everyone, kids and adults alike, raised their voice in a

Forget everything you thought you knew about dining on Bald Head Island.

T

he chefs at the Shoals Club, Bald Head Island Club, Maritime Market Café and MoJo’s on the Harbor are redefining the island’s cuisine one plate at a time. They’ve perfected dishes that incorporate local flavors, regional ingredients and international twists to

celebrate our Southern, seafaring history. Grits, fried green tomatoes, scallops, shrimp and fresh fish are just some of the local ingredients these chefs use to create colorful and flavorful food. Some dishes, like the Shoals Club’s deviled eggs, honor our history, while others, like the Bald Head Island Club’s BHI Seafood Bounty, reinterpret regional cuisine with an undoubtedly modern twist. Traditional or contemporary, casual or upscale, what these dishes have in common is that they are distinctly Bald Head Island. Local ingredients translate to bold and vibrant dishes. By extending their reach to the region, the chefs on Bald Head Island can take advantage of a wide variety of fresh seafood, meats, fruits and vegetables. Some source heirloom rice, grits and vegetables from South Carolina, others reach into the mountains of North Carolina and Virginia for apples, and all of them use produce grown close to Bald Head Island to support local farmers and give diners the best food possible. The influence of foreign cuisines is evident in every outlet on the island, too. From the Maritime Market’s Asian- and Italian-inspired daily specials to MoJo’s twist on classic Italian dishes to the “Fusion” Mahi at the Bald Head Island Club, it’s clear that for these talented chefs, the world is their oyster. It’s not hard to find something good to eat while you’re on Bald Head Island. Whether you want to grab a sandwich to take to the beach or enjoy cuisine that rivals the view, we’ve got you covered.

Bald Head Island Club The Bald Head Island Club offers three distinct dining venues, from the casual poolside Pelicatessen to the pub-style Palms to the Grille, the Club’s primary dining venue. Full or temporary membership at the Bald Head Island Club is required to dine. The Pelicatessen The Pelicatessen—or the Peli, for those in the know—serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. Located beside the Bald Head Island Club pool, they’re the lunch spot of choice for swimmers as their menu of sandwiches, pizzas, salads and kidfriendly items like grilled cheese sandwiches and chicken fingers makes it easy to grab a bite and head back into the water, after a 30-minute break, of course. Have a late-night pizza craving? The Peli has your cure with their 9” personal pizzas and their 16” pizzas to share. Get creative with

Dinner at The Grille is upscale, featuring a selection of seafood and meat dishes that use as many local ingredients as possible. For starters, you can’t go wrong with the tuna Carpaccio, shrimp cocktail or mussels. When they’re in season, the oysters—which come fried, baked or raw on the half-shell—are a great way to begin. Entrees are divided into “From the Farm and Garden” and “From the Sea,” and both sections offer dishes you’ll be back for. Try the bone-in veal chop, pork and clams, or duo of duck, or go with something from the sea like the tuna “nicoise” or grouper saltimbocca. Whatever you choose, you’ll end up with something memorable. Don’t forget dessert at The Grille. A Frangelico crème brulee, brownie á la mode or a cordial will top off your meal with a smile. The Palms and Palms Terrace How does lunch or dinner overlooking the croquet greenswards or holes No. 10 and No. 18 sound? At The Palms and Palms Terrace, you’ll get just that—a unique and stunning view of the Bald Head Island Club’s grounds and a great meal. The Palms serves a full bar and pub-style menu, but their grilled chicken wings and Hot & Fire—fried shrimp with a spicy glaze— help kick your typical bar-fare up a notch. On the lunch and dinner menus, you’ll find a selection of soups, salads, sandwiches and entrees. The Cobb and Greek salads always please, and you can add grilled chicken, beef and seafood (including crab cakes) to any salad. Go with the Carolina barbecue pork sandwich or a crab cake sandwich for some local flavor at lunch. Or try something internationally inspired like the fish tacos or quesadilla stuffed with cheese, ancho chicken, tequila shrimp or chipotle beef.

The Grille Overlooking the golf course and golf practice facility, The Grille is open for lunch and dinner daily for much of the year. During lunch The Palms’ menu is served here, but for dinner, a unique menu is served; membership at the Bald Head Island Club is required to dine and reservations are recommended.

For the best views on the island, bar none, you’ll want dinner at the Shoals Club. Situated at The Point of Cape Fear, the dining room, lounge and terrace of the Shoals Club, as well as the poolside Sandbar Grille, overlook East and South Beaches and Frying Pan Shoals. Full or temporary membership is required to enjoy dining at the Shoals Club. Sandbar Grille Offering fresh lunch selections for kids and adults, the Sandbar Grille is a great choice for families who want to maximize their pool time and get something good to eat. The menu’s selection of burgers, sandwiches, salads, kid-friendly food and frozen drinks (with selections for kids and adults), has something for everyone. During the summer season, the Sandbar Grille serves lunch and dinner. The Dining Room and Lounge At the Shoals Club, you’ll find different menus in the Lounge and the Dining Room. Along with a great menu highlighting the best produce, meat and fish the season has to offer, you’ll find hard-tobeat views, a full bar and a beer selection that includes some of North Carolina’s finest craft brews. In the Dining Room, the chef serves a menu that reflects the bounty of the season and takes advantage of the best local produce, seafood

and meats available. Many of the items are Southern-inspired, but the chef isn’t afraid to stretch and get creative. Grilled smoked lamb chops, pan fried chicken, pork belly, sea scallops and local shrimp make an appearance on the menu seasonally. Mike’s Bites

MoJo’s on the Harbor Dining al fresco at MoJo’s on the Harbor is hard to beat. Weather permitting, grab a table overlooking the harbor for lunch, dinner or just drinks. Count the boats as they come and go, measure time by the ferry’s arrival and relax. Before you even crack open your menu, order a basket of hushpuppies and some corn-dusted green tomatoes—two Southern treats—for the table. If you’re feeling more international, try an order of fried calamari or house-made hummus. Starter specials include the ceviche, which is a must-order when it’s on the menu. MoJo’s does seafood right, preparing fresh, locally caught fish as often as they can, and using healthier preparations like grilling, broiling or steaming in many of their dishes. At lunch, the fish taco is made with fresh fish and a cilantro-lime slaw; at dinner, the Mediterranean-style shrimp and grits and Simply Grilled Grouper use health-conscious techniques and local seafood. In the mood for something from the land? MoJo’s salads, burgers, wraps and sandwiches are big enough to share. And the chicken wings are some of the best you’ll find anywhere. MoJo’s offers a full bar with a wide selection of bottled beer as well as local and craft-brewed beer on tap. Their wine list is expertly curated and has a glass perfect for your meal. During the summer, 68

Located in front of the Bald Head Island Conservancy in one of the buildings original to the Cape Fear Light, Mike’s Bites makes it easy to grab something and head to the beach. Serving snacks, fresh sandwiches (with bread baked daily), drinks and frozen treats, Mike’s is the closest thing to a drive-through you’ll find on the island. Stop in for a treat or something to tide you over until dinner, or grab a sandwich for the road.

Will o’ the Wisp If you need a place to unwind after a day of golf, kayaking the creeks or sailing, or if you just want a place to enjoy a drink with the breeze in your hair, Will o’ the Wisp is the spot to be. Casual and laid back, Will o’ the Wisp serves wine, beer and snacks like gourmet popcorn and Luna Pops, and will quickly become your favorite hangout on the island. Located harborside adjacent to the Sail Shop, Will o’ the Wisp is the perfect place to watch the sun set or wait for the ferry home.

Delphina Family Eatery and Pub Set to open Memorial Day 2013, Delphina will feature a familyfriendly menu, great service and lovely views of the river. Located in the harbor in the former River Pilot Cafe, the adjoining Sandpiper Sweets will serve ice cream, shakes, homemade cupcakes and candy creations from around the world.

Work with a Real Estate Sales Professional Who Islanders Trust. Many of Garrett Albertson’s new clients come as referrals from Bald Head Island property owners. They are owners he’s matched with the right home or homesite, owners he’s provided assistance to after the sale, and owners whose properties he’s successfully listed and sold.

“Those who know Gary, know that he is interested in more than sales. He’s interested in you. He is passionate about helping you to find your perfect fit.” –Bald Head Island resident

“Our home had been listed for three years. There was more activity in our first two months with Garrett, and it sold!” –Former owners, Columbus, OH

“We appreciate very much your guidance in our acquiring the Hammocks shares. Your thoroughness and professionalism definitely made a difference. Thank you!” –2nd Home Owners, Hickory, NC

For Garrett, serving others comes naturally. Prior to coming to work for Bald Head Island Limited Real Estate Sales in 2007, Garrett and his wife Donna owned and operated a bed & breakfast inn on the island for five years. Before that, he spent forty years devoted to ministry in Presbyterian churches in Philadelphia, Boston, Pittsburgh and New York. From time to time, you can still find him conducting services or wedding ceremonies at the island’s Village Chapel.

From Harbour Village to the Cape Fear Point, Jim Brown Represents All the Homes and Homesites the Island Has to Offer. Jim first visited Bald Head Island in 1975 and was taken with the beauty of the island and its development potential. He began his association with the developers of Bald Head Island in 1991 as property manager and switched to real estate sales in 1995. Jim loves sharing the island with families, who he says comes here to unwind and get reacquainted. Honestly, integrity and market knowledge position him to take care of each family’s individual real estate needs. “Our property on Bald Head Island had previously been listed with another agency, but did not sell. After listing with Jim Brown, we were successful in the first season. We live in Colorado and Jim was very helpful coordinating all aspects of the sale, including the land survey and wetland mapping. We really do appreciate everything Jim did for us.” Stanley and Karen Kitzmiller, Crested Butte, CO

“Jim has a rare quality in a realtor: He can find out what a customer wants, even when the customer himself doesn’t know. That was our case. By taking us seriously as buyers from the first moment, and by trying to answer our every question and accommodate our every request, he helped us understand what we really wanted. Needless to say, we bought it.” J I M B ROW N

om sw eet home This breathtaking Asian-inspired home offers a place to retreat, reflect and reconnect By Lauren Frye, Photography by Joshua Curry

“Om Sweet Home offers a base of stability in the world, a place of retreat.

W

alking into “Om Sweet Home,” Cheryl and Bob Preston’s Asian-inspired home on Bald Head Island, the first thing you notice is the interplay of light. Sunlight filtering through a strategically placed window in the foyer coaxes a gentle smile from a Buddha statue. Intricately carved wood panels cast delicate shadows on the gleaming floor. As your eyes take in all they can, your spirit does the same and you notice how calm you feel, instantly, upon stepping into this lovely, serene space. This is no accident. Cheryl and Bob wanted to build a home that could act as a retreat from the bedlam of daily life. Even the name reflects this idea. “Om,” a mystical Sanskrit sound of Hindu origin, is used as a mantra in meditation. “When we meditate, we connect with an inner wellspring that gives us a core of stability and a place to retreat to,” says Cheryl, a meditation instructor. “No matter what’s going on in our lives, we can always go back to that wellspring, that stable core. And that’s what this home, and the island, offer: a base of stability in the world, a place of retreat.” The Prestons have lived all around the world, calling Germany, Hong Kong and Shanghai home before settling in Mystic, Conn. With friends and family also spread out, they needed a place to act as home base for gatherings. “Bald Head Island is the perfect base,” says Cheryl. “It’s calm, it’s quiet, and everyone loves to come here.” The house, which was finished in 2009, was designed to accommodate the Prestons’ big, happy extended family. Cheryl and Bob’s twin sons and triplet daughters invite friends from all over the globe to visit them on the island each summer, which is just how they like it. “The more the merrier” is Cheryl’s philosophy. “The house has large spaces for entertaining, but the design is flexible so it also feels cozy for a smaller group,” she explains. “The size is deceptive.” In addition, each room is distinct in design and décor, giving it a unique essence. “The idea is to have a full and complete experience in any area of the home,” she says. The experience may vary from room to room, but Cheryl wants all her guests to take from the house a new-found excitement and verve for life. “I want people to recapture their childlike sense of wonder, and rediscover the small miracles and magic in the everyday.” In the end, though, Cheryl maintains that it’s the island itself, not the home or the items that fill it, that’s magical. “If you think the house seems special,” she says, “it’s because Bald Head Island is special.”

The painting (above) by Chinese artist Irene Chou is entitled “The Universe is My Mind.” The lacquer-painted puppet from Bali (below) is one of many Cheryl has collected in her travels.

The great room features an eclectic mix of Asian details and modern décor. White Brazilian tile flooring contrasts beautifully with the rich Sepele wood ceiling. The painting above the dining table, called “Entrance of Light,” is by a Burmese artist. The intricately detailed chandelier once hung in Cheryl’s meditation center in Hong Kong, then in the Prestons’ living room in Shanghai, before gracing their home on Bald Head Island.

The interior feels seamless, from the grand view down to the smallest detail.

The kitchen radiates minimalism with high-gloss lacquered cabinetry and stainless steel appliances. A carved wood panel divides the room while allowing light to filter through from all sides. A built-in banquette provides a cozy dining area that looks polished but feels casual.

haven 83

Brightly colored linens pair with dark wood to create a restful but vibrant master bedroom suite. A folding door system opens the room to a private screened porch complete with a slate-tiled gas fireplace and incredible views of the marsh and creek.

Cheryl’s inspiration for the master bath (left) came from a visit she and Bob took to India. During a tour of a palace, Cheryl was struck by a room filled with glass tiles that was built around a bathing pool. An intricately carved day bed (above) is an ideal spot for lounging, reading or meditating.

JASON FRYE

The Ba rrier Isl a nd St udy Center

Why Have a Study Center on Bald Head Island? Bald Head Island is geographically in the middle of the Eastern Seaboard and possesses a unique diversity of intact ecosystems, including dune, beach, estuary, salt marsh, maritime forest, maritime shrub and freshwater aquifer. The Smith Island Complex (which includes Bald Head, Middle and Bluff islands) is singled out within the scientific community not only for its biodiversity, but also for the support and leadership of its human inhabitants.

T

he first community-based barrier island research and education facility in the nation, the Bald Head Island Conservancy’s 5,000-square-foot Barrier Island Study Center (BISC) has hit the ground running in its first year of operation. The facility’s labs, libraries, media center and programs are attracting scientists and “citizen scientists” of all ages to expand their understanding of barrier islands and make informed decisions about how to live sustainably in a changing coastal environment—a topic of global relevance, interest and urgency. The blue barrels outside the study center are an educational display demonstrating how a cistern uses gravity to capture rainwater. The BISC has a cistern that holds 7,000 gallons of rainwater, WALKER GOLDER

WALKER GOLDER

which is then used for various purposes like landscaping.

Through camps and other educational programming, children learn about barrier island environments and are encouraged to become stewards of the environment. The distance learning program allows environmental experts to teach high school and college courses that bring students to stay and learn during the school year. The wet labs in the BISC also provide opportunities for laboratory work, “touch tank time,” and other hands-on activities.

WALKER GOLDER

Children’s Programs

Community Education

WALKER GOLDER

The data obtained at the BISC is shared with the scientific community and general public, allowing citizens to make informed choices about the way they live on and interact with the barrier island environment. “Citizen scientists” benefit the researchers’ field work and help to convey research results to the broader community. A state-of-the-art multimedia theater provides unlimited opportunities for communication and education, both on-site and remotely.

Model for Green Building The BISC is projected to be the first building in southeastern North Carolina, and the fifth in the state, to attain US Green Building Council’s Platinum LEED certification for new construction if such certification is achieved. Along with reducing operating costs and creating a healthier work environment, the Center’s green practices, such as employing reclaimed wood, rainwater harvesting, solar lighting and using insulation made from recycled blue jean fabric, also serve as a model for homeowners looking to build a sustainable home.

A p p l i e d S c i e n t i f i c R e s e ar c h

HARRY TAYLOR

Scientists from around the region and around the world use the BISC to study barrier island ecology and expand our understanding of these important ecosystems. The Conservancy has already demonstrated leadership in applied science, creating an effective model for removing the invasive plant species beach vitex, which when left unchecked can limit dune formation, increase erosion and interfere with sea turtle nesting.

W

ilmington, N.C., based architect George C. Hemingway, III— better known by friends and colleagues as Chip—has been

painting almost as long as he’s been designing. In fact, he took up painting while studying architecture at the North Carolina State University School of Design nearly 25 years ago and has pursued it seriously ever since.

“People always ask me which I like better, art or architecture,” says

Hemingway. “I always answer that to me they are inseparable. Both reflect my love and appreciation of nature.”

Hemingway favors painting en plein air, a French expression

which means “in the open air” and is used to describe the act of painting outdoors. “I love capturing light in my paintings and the best way to do that for me is to be within it,” says Hemingway. “I also love the way I can capture scenes when I travel that can’t fit into a photograph. Plein air painting is a great way to absorb and experience nature wherever I might find myself.”

Hemingway, who rarely leaves home without his painting supplies,

has captured natural beauty through his art up and down the East Coast, but he harbors a particular fondness for Bald Head Island. “The island is such a beautiful place, it’s an ideal locale to pursue what I call my ‘journey into nature through art and architecture,’” he says. “I love the variety. One day I might be on the beach and the next deep within the maritime forest.”

Hemingway’s paintings can be found at galleries throughout North

Carolina, including at All About Art in Merchant’s Row on Bald Head Island, or on his website at www.hemingwayartstudio.com.
