he ideas sprout from my mind, I shut myself away in a small office, put a Marianne Faithfull CD on the mini stereo system and think about the printing, the patterns and the designs.” With dedication and secrecy, that’s how Miriam Ocariz started to build up her collections. To start with she painted slippers and then cotton tee shirts. Later she combined her work as a designer and as a teacher of fashion at the Lanca School. She presented her first collection in 1996 at the Gaudí catwalk in Barcelona. Getting there wasn’t easy, trickier still working from Bilbao, where she has her workshop: “It’s not like being in Madrid. Up here it always costs more to manage things. But now that I’m organized, I appreciate the peace this city brings me,” says Ocariz. This love for her roots and desire to consolidate her label made her give up her job as director of women’s collections at Armand Basi. She achieved her goal: her clothes sell in Tokyo, Korea and London… and she’s made silkscreen printing and prints her trademarks. Now she is working on her next collection, in which “there will be a contrast between feminine and masculine; and a sunglasses line,” she says. For Miriam, “the worst of this work is that it’s very stressful and you have little free time. But when I do have some I like to get out in the country and ride a bike,” she tells us. She also loves music. Her frustrated vocation was to become “a rock singer," although she admits she wasn’t that good at it. MT

Con dedicación y sigilo, así comienza a construir Miriam Ocariz sus colecciones. En sus inicios pintaba zapatillas y luego camisetas de algodón. Más tarde compaginó su trabajo como diseñadora y profesora de moda en la escuela Lanca, y en 1996 presentó su primera colección en la pasarela Gaudí de Barcelona. Llegar hasta ahí no fue sencillo, y más trabajando desde Bilbao, donde tiene su taller: “No es como estar en Madrid, desde aquí siempre cuesta más gestionar las cosas. Pero ahora que estoy organizada, agradezco la paz que me da esta ciudad”, confiesa Ocariz. Ese amor por su tierra y las ganas de consolidar su firma hicieron que abandonase su puesto de directora de colecciones femeninas de la firma Armand Basi. Consiguió su objetivo: sus prendas se venden en Tokio, Corea, Londres…, y ha hecho de la serigrafía y el estampado sus señas de identidad. Ahora está trabajando en su próxima colección, en la que “habrá un contraste entre lo femenino y lo masculino; y en una línea de gafas de sol”, asegura. Para Miriam, “lo peor de este trabajo es que es muy estresante y tienes poco tiempo libre. Pero cuando lo tengo me gusta salir al campo y pasear en bici”, nos cuenta. Además, le encanta la música, de ahí que su vocación frustrada sea “ser cantante de rock”, aunque confiesa que no se le da nada bien. MT
