LA GRAN EXCEPCIÓN
“You can achieve anything with effort, passion and tenacity.” That’s what Juan Manuel Montilla, a.k.a. Langui, says, and his own case demonstrates that he must be right. Suffering from partial paralysis, this “handicapped” man from Pan Bendito – one of Madrid’s outer working-class suburbs – can now boast of editing his third disc with the band La Excepción, consolidating his position as being one of Spain’s greatest rappers. He has also won two Goya awards (as most promising new actor and for the best original song) for El truco del manco (The knack of the one armed person), a fictitious story but one with autobiographical tints in which Langui discovered his ability to perform. When he collected the award for the film, he dedicated it to his parents: “You who always put the Cola-Cao (chocolate drink) in the highest part of the cupboard to make me work for it.” La verdad más verdadera, (The truest truth) his latest song, continues along the path of strong social commitment that started in 2003 with his atypical venture into music alongside Gitano Antón and Ladako Style. Because of problems with their record producers, with whom they got as far as initiating legal action, they’ve decided to edit their own disc and distribute it free through the Internet. This neighbourhood group has no fears about taking on the music giants, just as Radiohead did with their disc In Rainbows: “The record companies have to change their way of thinking and look at other types of contracts. The industry is being destroyed by the multinationals, by the big executives. But us, the artists, are getting the same money.”
Con esfuerzo, pasión y tesón se puede conseguir cualquier cosa”. Lo dice Juan Manuel Montilla, a.k.a. Langui, y su caso demuestra que no le falta razón. Aquejado de una parálisis parcial, este “discapacitado” del Pan Bendito -barrio del extrarradio de Madrid- puede presumir de haber editado su tercer disco con La Excepción, consolidándose como uno de los grandes exponentes del rap en español, y de contar con dos premios Goya (Mejor actor revelación y Mejor canción original) por El truco del manco, una historia de ficción con tintes autobiográficos donde Langui descubrió su faceta interpretativa. Cuando recogió el galardón por la película, se lo dedicó a sus padres: “A vosotros que siempre me poníais el Cola-Cao en lo más alto del armario para que tuviera que esforzarme”. La verdad más verdadera, su último disco, continúa el camino de compromiso social marcado desde que en 2003 comenzara su atípica aventura musical junto al Gitano Antón y Ladako Style. Por problemas con sus compañías discográficas, a las que llegaron a demandar, han decidido autoeditarse el disco y distribuirlo gratis por Internet. Este grupo de barrio no tiene miedo de plantar cara a las grandes compañías como ya hiciera Radiohead con su disco In Rainbows: “Las compañías discográficas tienen que cambiar el chip y hacer otro tipo de contratos; se está destruyendo la industria para las multinacionales, para los grandes ejecutivos, pero nosotros, los artistas, estamos cobrando el mismo dinero”.
