TRINIDAD & TOBAGO Six years ago, the Caribbean Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (CARAIFA) held its annual Sales Congress in Tobago and it is my esteemed pleasure, as President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, to welcome your return to our shores. Regional integration, whether through organised memberships, trade agreements, cross-fertilisation of cultures or the free movement of people, remains as critical today as it did when our countries gained independence. It is perhaps now much more necessary that as Caribbean countries, we go beyond the geographic landscape that binds us and unite to not only compete in a globalising economy but to co-ordinate regional responses to deal with the very sustainability of the Caribbean region within itself and in the wider world. For this very reason, it is commendable that CARAIFA, through its annual
It is against this background that I fully endorse the 29th Annual Sales Congress of CARAIFA under the theme “The Pursuit Continues”. As you seek to fulfil the agenda of this Congress, I challenge you to pursue new and innovative methods, beyond and above the traditional approach, in dealing with the insurance and financial needs of your stakeholders. This may well involve aggressive legislative reform in some cases, and in others, a total re-strategising and shift in policies and human resource outlook while maintaining the efficiency and sensibility of a productive insurance or financial business. Indeed, the very survival of insurance and financial businesses rests upon their ability to sell and deliver quality products to their target markets in keeping with international best practices. The pursuit of even-handed, just and equitable industry practices is as noble as CARAIFA can ever aim to be, as it strives to uphold high ethical industry standards. I applaud the mission and programmes of CARAIFA and have no doubt, if past speakers are any indicators, that this Sales Congress 2015 will be stimulating, productive and beneficial to all. It must not be lost upon us however, that this Sales Congress is taking place in Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean’s largest producer of oil and natural gas, at a time when the Republic faces, along with the rest of the world, plunging oil prices. The Sales Congress 2015 presents a ripe opportunity for insurance salespersons and financial advisors to arrest the pervading concerns of its stakeholders by discussing and sharing valuable industry advice and proffering solutions to meet the impact of the current oil crisis. There is no better time than now, for our Caribbean region to benefit from the wealth of financial advice and insurance acumen that will undoubtedly flow from the contributions and discussions at the 2015 Sales Congress. Best wishes for a useful and rewarding Sales Congress 2015 as CARAIFA continues to pursue insurance and financial empowerment and education. Though in pursuit of such laudable goals, I nonetheless invite you to enjoy the dynamic culture of this Republic and embrace the genuine warmth of our people.

MINISTER OF FINANCE
I would like to applaud the members of the Caribbean Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (CARAIFA) Sales Congress for recognizing the importance of this industry group to the overall success of the Caribbean Economy. I think it is useful for us to look at the importance of developing insurance and financial advisers to achieve greater savings and investments in our region. Trinidad and Tobago’s financial services sector has become an important pillar in our economy. Together with real estate services, it contributes close to 15.0 percent of Gross Domestic Product. The government has taken major steps to amend the Insurance Act, in doing so, it will complement and protect citizens from the changing economic tides facing the local Insurance Industry. This legislation is a significant piece of advancement to the industry as it is intended to introduce best practice in corporate governance risk management, consolidated supervision and policyholder protection to the insurance industry. I expect this proposed Bill to be laid in parliament in the coming months. The goal of the regional body, CARAIFA, will complement our country’s objectives to foster cooperation, interaction, togetherness and unity among members in the Caribbean region through its educational courses, annual congresses, meetings and programmes. Fundamentally, in order to achieve this goal, each member country has to maintain consistency in the quality of advice on insurance solutions and banking financial decisions provided to consumers. The expectation is that insurance and
financial advisers would be able to help individuals and households develop a broader financial outlook in consort with understanding how insurance fits into their broader financial management strategies to grow their savings, manage risk and meet specific financial goals. As you all are aware, access to sound financial advice has become even more important today as families are faced with challenges of managing heavier debt loads, higher costs of healthcare and education, effects of natural disasters that are occurring with greater frequency, and longer life spans. We believe that the responsibility to provide sound advice falls on all insurance intermediaries, whether you are an agent, an insurance broker, or a financial adviser. I look forward to CARAIFA’s continuing support in providing financial capability programmes that are tailored to the different sectors of the industry providing the best packages to individuals and member countries. Additionally, let me congratulate the CARAIFA on its 29th annual conference and the progress that has been made in bringing the industry together under an organized platform to further advance and develop the industry. I would like to take this opportunity to wish TTIFIA continued success in improving the quality of its advice and the enhancement of its role in supporting the broader financial management strategies of the region to grow their savings, manage risk and meet their financial goals.

It gives me immense pleasure in welcoming you to my blessed twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (the hub of the Caribbean) and I am extremely honoured to lead this august association, TTAIFA, in hosting CARAIFA’s 29th Annual Sales Congress 2015. This is the fourth (4th) occasion we have been given the opportunity to do such, and for this we take great pride. TTAIFA is in the business of empowering our stakeholders with knowledge and training through quality holistic development programmes. We are a member of CARAIFA, an association that fosters cooperation, interaction, togetherness and unity among member territories in the Caribbean region through its educational courses, annual congresses, meeting and programmes. This 2015 Congress will bring together insurance and financial advisors from our member territories, as well as local and international speakers, facilitators and guests. Our objective is to motivate participants to achieve more, set higher goals and to become truly successful in their endeavours. With this in mind, I am happy to present this year’s congress theme “The Pursuit Continues” as it resonates the clarion call for us all to prepare for the journey ahead. Soon new legislation will become effective here in Trinidad and Tobago and across the region changes will continue to take place and these said changes
will affect how we do business now and in the future. However, in our journey ahead, once we continue to be committed to our clients’ needs then our resolve to this noble enterprise would ensure our continued success. The organising committee, led by our capable congress director, has gone to great lengths to give value for your time and money by ensuring that you will have opportunities, amidst absorbing engagements, to enjoy a bit of the beauty of our twin island republic and more so the warmth and culture of our people. I extend greetings and a warm welcome to CARAIFA’s 29th Annual Sales Congress under the Theme -The Pursuit Continues. As Congress Director, my team and I could not have been more excited to be your hosts for Congress 2015. We have an exhilarating congress experience planned for you that would certainly ensure that your pursuit continues‌. Our cadre of leaders includes renowned international, regional and local speakers who will stimulate and motivate you into action. Our entertainment, in true Trini style is guaranteed to thrill and excite you.The year 2015 is our time to review and fine tune what is happening in our lives as advisors, to break free from all shackles, and to discover the truth that will make the difference. The fact remains that major changes are happening; political, social and economic shifts. There are also those personal issues that so many of us are experiencing at this time- I cite myself as an example- losing my only child in a vehicular accident on 21st October, 2014. However, in essence, the Pursuit continues especially from the perspective of the Industry. Therefore, continue to seek ways of improving the quality of family life, one family at a time. Pay particular attention to the economic aspect. Consider too that our society needs to focus on an aging population. A significant proportion of this aging population has not made proper economic provisions for their retirement and that has all kinds of societal implications. Therefore, our industry, in spite of the fact that it has not been
sufficiently appreciated by the wider society, must really bring to bear all our resources and energy to address this issue because that is what we do. Ours is the ONLY industry that I know of that goes out every day to our population and talk about provision for their family in time of untimely death, Retirement, Accidental death, Mortgage protection and Education. The impact of adequate financial planning is phenomenal and we cannot rest until we achieve that purpose. Most importantly, a BIG thank you is conveyed to all the advisors who are here in attendance and special thanks to the Companies and the Heads of Sales for their unwavering support. Please take time to greet and share with your fellow advisors and remember two days from now, tomorrow will be yesterday. Much love and blessings Congress Director,

I ride the wind, sail the water, ‘She’ calls my name to come on back to her in Trinidad (extract from song called “Trinidad” by Eddie Money”) I am extremely happy to be back in the land of the Hummingbird, from Carnival to calypso, steel pan to stick fighting, and the rich and expansive culture of the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago, hosts of CARAIFA’s 29th Annual Sales Congress. It is said that Trinidad & Tobago, two Islands, two unique experiences, has something for everyone from the natural wonder of the Pitch Lake to the Western Hemisphere’s oldest protected rainforest, we expect to experience a destination where thrill meets tranquillity and is a wonderful choice for our members to come together as a family and bask in “the true Caribbean” experience. The hardworking team of the Trinidad & Tobago Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (TTAIFA) under the stewardship of President Curtis Dass and Congress Director (CD) Alicia Birch promises a congress that will motivate, stimulate and arm you with the keys to unlocking your potential as “The Pursuit Continues” in your personal and professional growth and development. Our 2015 Inductee’s commitment to the Industry is unchallenged in Belize and throughout the Caribbean. He is seen as the quintessential “insurance man”, always immaculately dressed, always knowledgeable and willing to share information with clients and prospects and always delivering quality service. He was also very influential in bringing the first CARAIFA Congress to Belize in 1998. He spearheaded the return of Congress in 2001 and took the reins, as Congress Director, of the 2012 Congress, in Belize. He has been a prolific attendee at Congress, beginning with Barbados in 1992 and participating in more than twelve (12) others. He attended St. Michael’s College in Belize City, Belize and Calabar High School in Kingston, Jamaica before completing a Bachelor’s degree with History as a major at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, Jamaica. He represented Belize in Track at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo in 1974.

GILBERT ANDREW HARRISON ‘HARRY’ PILGRIM BA, CLU, MBA. as its 2015 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE Harry Pilgrim is a former Regional Manager for Sagicor Capital Life’s insurance operations in Belize. He held that position for twelve (12) years, up to December 2012. Currently, he is an Alternate Director on the National Health Insurance Committee of the Social Security Board of Belize, Alternate Chairman of the Board of Management of the Anglican Cathedral College (formerly the St. Michael’s College – his alma mater), and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Belize. He is also seen as a “perennial contributor” to the Kidney Association of Belize. He is also a founding member and past president of the Life Underwriters Association of Belize (LUABz), now Belize Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (BelAIFA). He has been a moderator for life industry education programmes, and has served as the Public Relations Director on the Executive of the Caribbean Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (CARAIFA) not once, but twice.
He returned home, from Jamaica, in 1973 and taught at two High Schools in Belize (becoming principal of one) before making a complete career switch in 1977, (the year CARAIFA’s precursor CALU was formed) becoming a Life Underwriter with Caribbean Atlantic Life. He qualified himself formally in his new area of activity, obtaining the Life Underwriters Association Training Certificate (LUATC), Associate in Customer Service (ACS) and Associate in Insurance Agency Administration (AIAA) designations, before becoming a Chartered Life Underwriter in 1998. In 2004 he obtained the Master in Business Administration (MBA) from UWI, Cave Hill, Barbados. Today, our Hall of Fame Inductee focuses on enhancing marketing and service delivery in two (2) insurance agencies with which he is associated. Operating under the banner Diversified Life Solutions Belize Ltd. He is father of four (4) children, Karla, Andrew, Giselle and Adrianne, and grandfather of two (2) boys. As a result of his extraordinary contributions to enhancing the professional practice and image of life insurance practitioners throughout the Caribbean, it is CARAIFA’s distinct pleasure, to induct into its Hall of Fame, Gilbert Andrew Harrison (“Harry”) Pilgrim BA, CLU, MBA.

Raymond Tim Kee wears several hats apart from his primary role as the mayor of the capital city, Port of Spain, a position he has held for the past year, having assumed office in November 2013. He is a business professional in the field of finance, and is the managing director/owner of theRaymond Tim Kee Investments of the Guardian Life of the Caribbean Limited. He is a graduate of the University of the West Indies and the holder of several awards for his accomplishments in the field of Financial Management with the Guardian Life of the Caribbean Ltd.

Born and raised in a family of missionaries in Zimbabwe, his main source of in- spiration in his boyhood was his grandfather, a lay preacher who had taught himself to read and write. As a child, Max would often go into the maize fields and recite entire sermons that had been delivered by his beloved grandfather a tenacious, humble and selfless man and so Max’s love for oratory and guiding people towards making a positive difference in their own lives was born. Douglas Camacho is Group President Strategic Investments and Projects of Guardian Holdings Limited. Douglas is a Director of Bancassurance Limited, a Director of Guardian Holdings Limited, Guardian Life of the Caribbean Limited and GAMAY Investments Limited. Active in the insurance industry for over thirty years, Douglas is currently a Director of the Association of Trinidad and Tobago Insurance Companies (ATTIC), Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Trinidad and Tobago Insurance Insti- tute (TTII), a Director of the Insurance Association of the Caribbean (IAC), Chairman of the Pan Caribbean Business Coalition (PCBC) and a Board Member of LL Global. He is also President of the Trinidad & Tobago Hockey Board (TTHB) and a Past President of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC).

Wendell Mottley is the holder of economic degrees from Yale University, USA, and Cambridge University, UK and has had a distinguished career in Finance. Mr. Mottley served as Minister of Finance of Trinidad and Tobago from 1991- 1995 and was most recently based in New York as a Managing Director and Senior Advisor at Credit Suisse, a leading global investment banking firm, from which he retired in December 2011.The first Chief Executive Officer for the Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Company, Mr. Mottley penned the historic document “Industrial Policy for Trinidad and Tobago 1959-2008, which focused on governance in an oil-rich state.

Having made his mark as an athlete with a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, a silver medal in the 400 metres, and a bronze medal in the 4x400 relay team in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Mr. Mottley went on to sterling achievements in local and international financial markets. Brigadier General Anthony W. J. Phillips-Spencer ED, LM, UNM, nsp, MSc, BSc, is the Vice Chief of Defence Staff of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) and is a military officer with more than 33 years of professional experience since his enlistment in March 1981. He has successfully fulfilled the responsibilities of a diverse range of appointments in his military career to date, including but not limited to: Platoon Commander, Company Commander, Aide-de-Camp to the President, Senior Military Liaison Officer - United Nations Mission in Haiti (UNMIH), Battalion Commanding Officer, Assistant Chief Staff Officer Plans – HQ TTDF, Defence and Military Attaché (Washington, D.C.), Chief of Delegation to the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB), and Commanding Officer Trinidad and Tobago Regiment (TTR).
BRIGADIER GENERAL ANTHONY PHILLIPS- SPENCER Dr. Jennifer Rouse is the Director of the Division of Ageing in the Ministry of the People and Social Development in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Dr. Rouse attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) during the years 1996 to 2004 where she completed a double major in Social Work and Africana Studies, and graduated with a Baccalaureate degree (cum laude) in May 1998.

In August 2001, Dr. Rouse graduated with her Masters degree in Policy Sciences, with the area of concentration in Ageing Issues; and in 2004, she graduated with her Doctorate in Public Policy in Ageing. Her doctoral thesis is entitled: A Case Study in Ageing Policy in Trinidad and Tobago: the Role of Interest Groups in Defining New policy Initiatives. In August 2003, Dr. Rouse relocated to Trinidad to assume duties as the country’s first Director of the Division of Ageing, which was established to serve as an umbrella agency to focus on ageing initiatives.

Dr. Julian (Jules) Ferdinand is a business consultant, lecturer and author. He has conducted management and leadership training in several companies and organizations throughout the Eastern Caribbean. He lectures in Executive Leadership and Human Development, Corporate Turnaround, Strategic Management, Multinational Strategy, and the Global Strategy and Innovation courses in the Masters in Business Administration (MBA) programmes at the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business (UWI, Trinidad & Tobago).

WAYNE ALLEYNE Dr. Marlene Attzs is currently Head of the Department of Economics at the UWI St. Augustine; she has worked in the Department since 1998. Prior to being appointed as Department Head in 2014, she served as Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Social Sciences with responsibility for the Faculty’s distance and outreach Programmes in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean. In terms of national public service, Dr. Attzs currently serves as Deputy Chairman of the Economic Development Board, an advisory Board of the Ministry of Planning and Sustainable Development. She also is Chair of a national UNESCO Committee under the MOST (Management of Social Transformation) Programme. Dr. Attzs has a diverse research portfolio focusing, among other things, on gender and development, economic development and climate change and sustainable development in island states.

Carlyle Fletcher CLU is a Chartered Life Underwriter who joined the insurance industry on 01st December, 1981, after a ten (10) year career in Accounting and Auditing. He has qualified for all major Company and Industry Awards. He is currently a Branch Manager with Guardian Life. He is a Life Member of the Prestigious Million Dollar Round Table and has been inducted into his company’s Convention Hall of Fame and TTAIFA’s South Chapter’s Hall of Fame.

He was a past winner of CARAIFA’S speakers Forum and has spoken to standing ovations at CARAIFA’s Barbados and Grenada Sales Congresses and TTAIFA South Chapter’s MDRT Day. He is a Toastmaster and has won the Caribbean Humorous Speech Contest on several occasions. He is one of the Industry’s most entertaining and sought after speakers. Throughout his tenure in the business, Carlyle’s main focus has been in training and agent development. His workshop will expose a new concept he has developed especially for Caribbean People. Daniel “Danny” O’Connell, MBA, is an eight-year MDRT member with one Court of the Table and four Top of the Table honours. He is an active volunteer within MDRT and currently serves as a member of the Program Committee for the Top of Table Annual Meeting. O’Connell is no stranger to adversity, overcoming a few in his lifetime. Born to a disabled parent and nearly brain dead at 11 months old, he learned to speak correctly at age four. Today, O’Connell is a partner at Benefit Resources Group in Dallas, Texas, USA. Since starting in the insurance business in 2008, he has transformed a one-producer family agency into a thriving boutique firm which has increased its revenue by a factor of five. He serves as a board member of the NAIFA Dallas chapter and was recognized by NAIFA as one of the “Four Under 40” national award winners for 2014.

O’Connell speaks on a regular basis to groups and associations and teaches continuing education courses to other agents in Texas. He is active in his local community, serving as president of his Rotary chapter and teaching as an ad- junct professor at a local college. O’Connell will talk about how mentoring, partnering and finding a niche have changed his practice. Carlos became completely blind over fourteen years ago after which he found an emotional outlet through exercise (the gym in particular). It quickly became a form of therapy for him and he says that when he exercises he is on a natural “high”. His instructors at the gym encouraged him to enter competitions and he has never looked back since. He is adamant about showing his children and others that a disability is no excuse to not strive to be the best. He also believes that his discipline, his training and his eventual success will be a tremendous source of inspiration for all.
CARLOS GREENE
Over the past seven years, he has competed at several Regional and International competitions. At the majority of these competitions he was the only blind competitor. In other words, he does not limit himself to competitions for the disabled. When he is at home, he spends his time giving motivational speeches, and training in the gym and on the field, as he continues to represent Trinidad and Tobago in his personal bid for excellence. Carlos firmly believes that he is not doing this for himself alone. He knows that his success would be a victory for all Caribbean People (especially the differently - abled). Selena Chin 29 years old has climbed her way up the professional ladder to become one of the leading Insurance Advisors at Sagicor Life Jamaica. She started her career in 2008 and in her tenure she has improved from strength to strength each year. In 2012 she won 14 awards and had a similar experience in 2013 where she not only won 13 awards, she also broke a company’s record for the most cases sold in one month, 2014 was even better where she not only broke her own record she also broke the record for most cases settled in one year.
SELENA CHIN
She is a fun loving, disciplined and God fearing young lady. Her biggest inspiration is a speaker she heard and met at Sagicor Motivational Seminar (SMS) 2012, by the name of Derek Mills; he is called the ‘standards guy’. He taught her to “set high standards; and stick to your standards,” She graduated with honours from the University of Technology, Jamaica in 2006 after earning a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration with a major in Marketing. She loves her job and the opportunity to serve her client, stating that one of the standards she sets for herself is to work hard to be the best agent for her clients.

Andre Baptiste is the General Manager of Career Agency Development at Maritime Life and the Managing Director of Andre Baptiste Insurance Services Limited which is contracted as a Consulting Manager of the Maritime Financial Group. Andre was the first Trinidadian to qualify for MDRT Top of the Table and Court of the Table memberships. A multiple MDRT qualifier, Andre has won all Maritime and local industry sales and management awards. He leads a team of 160 financial advisors, unit managers and branch managers.

Andre joined the Maritime Financial Group in Trinidad and Tobago as a salesperson in 1972. He was promoted to unit manager in 1974, branch manager in 1979 and regional manager in 1996, assuming the position of General Manager, field Operations, just two years later a position he still holds. He was the first president of the now defunct GAMA of Trinidad and Tobago. Baptiste is the holder of several industry professional designations including LUTC FLMI and AMTC. He is the author and presenter of several papers and programs on career agency retention and agent productivity. Ian Narine has 20 years of experience in the financial services industry. He holds a Masters in Business Administration from Manchester Business School is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments. Over the course of his career Ian has fulfilled numerous roles and disciplines across the financial services industry.

He has practiced as an accountant, auditor, corporate finance consultant, stock broker, investment adviser, portfolio manager, wealth manager and private banker. He has also been involved in financial analysis and research, macro-economic analysis, financial risk management and internal audit. Currently he is a Member of the Investment Committee of the National Insurance Board of Trinidad and Tobago and sits on the Board of the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange and First Citizens Bank. Ian is also a regular contributor to the print and electronic media on matters related to investing, finance and the economy and has written over 500 columns for the Business Guardian spanning over eleven years.

Winston S. Williams embarked on a career in the insurance industry at the early age of nineteen (19), in an effort to support his family and put his siblings through secondary school. What started out as a need soon turned into a passion. He started in 1983 as a Unit Manager in CALICO where he was responsible for a unit comprising of eight sales staff. Winston’s success is not only limited to his astounding involvement with MDRT. His achievements locally are also overwhelming, where he is consisting recognized by our local insurance body, Trinidad & Tobago Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (TTAIFA), as an industry leader supreme. Over the years, he has been called upon by many local banks and insurance companies, as well as the Caribbean Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (CARAIFA), to provide sales training for their staff and Financial Advisors. The Business Guardian also features his financial planning advice from time to time.

Winston continues to avidly digest information relevant to both the local and global industry, ensuring that his knowledge is current and relevant when dealings with his clients and his Financial Advisors alike. Dr. Safeeya Mohammed graduated as the Class Valedictorian, and has been taking on challenge after challenge. From the responsibilities of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where she previously worked, to now Preventative Care Medicine, the director of a holistic health consultancy, Wellness Rocks TM motivating and guiding personal and corporate clients towards achieving optimal health and wellness. Her passion for compassion guides her altruistic endeavors, as she is involved with many charitable NGO’s, the Paediatric Cancer Foundation (JBF), the National Muslim Women’s Organization, the Daren Ganga Foundation, to founding and being the Chairman of S.O.S. Babies, (Supporting our Sick Babies), a counselling and support group for parents whose new-borns are in the NICU.

Warren Sookdar is a results driven and accomplished executive who is acknowledged for building and managing successful I.T. teams both in the Caribbean and Canada. His particular strengths are in aligning corporate and business strategies to operational performance thereby creating and maintaining high customer satisfaction levels. He is currently Chief Information Officer at The Trinidad and Tobago Unit Trust Corporation, the largest Mutual Funds Corporation in the Caribbean after having served in a similar capacity at the First Citizens Financial Group which operates in Trinidad and Tobago and several other Caribbean countries, as well as in Costa Rica.
WARREN SOOKDAR
With over 30 years’ experience in IT within the financial services sector, Mr. Sookdar joined Unit Trust Corporation in 2015 and has executive responsibility for the direction of Information and Communications Technology, with emphasis on maintaining service level availability and driving key strategic initiatives and priorities impacting the Corporation. Don La Foucade has been delivering inspirational talks and workshops around the Caribbean since 1999. He is the former Manager, Social Investment, Corporate Communications T&T, RBC Royal Bank and was specifically responsible for coordinating their Young Leaders programme. He also held the position of Secretary of the RBC Education Foundation, working to implement educational projects around Trinidad and Tobago. In 1989, he earned the ‘Most Disciplined Youth Linker’ award for his involvement in the Republic Bank ‘Youth Link’ program.
DON LA FOUCADE
He has also served as camp counselor, director and board member of the YMCA; and host of a TV6 youth production, entitled “Nettwork.” Ever-mindful of giving back to his country, in 2009, Don was nominated to the board of United Way Trinidad and Tobago. Don has supported the local United Nations Development Pro- gramme (UNDP) in its ‘Citizen Security’ initiatives, particularly as they relate to the youth of our nation. He is the author of two inspirational books: “FACING THE STORMS OF LIFE...IN FULL FLIGHT!” published in 2012 which is a workbook com- pilation of inspirational articles, and “IN FULL FLIGHT!” published in 2008.

ABOUT CARIFA The Caribbean Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (CARAIFA) is an umbrella organization of regional Life Underwriting associations whose members are engaged primarily in the sale of the products of Life Insurance and Financial Services companies. The name of the Association was changed in July 2000 from the Caribbean Association of Life Underwriters (CALU) to CARAIFA.

CARAIFA’S SOCIAL ARM CARAIFA FOUNDATION Every year CARAIFA focuses on a health condition where we highlight the importance of health awareness and prevention, in the past we focused on diabetes and hypertension. On October 31st of each year, our membership throughout the region joins its efforts with other health groups to high light a health condition, seeking to educate the public at large. We call this day “The Day of Common Concern” and in 2003 CARAIFA started to devote resources to creating a CARAIFA Foundation. The focus of the Foundation is on kidney complications, as we believe that more needs to be known about this disease as figures are showing an increasing number of deaths from kidney complications in our region. Many territories do not have the capacity to treat kidney failure and many of our friends, relatives and clients have to watch helplessly as their relatives slowly and painfully die from kidney complications. Among the most common persons who fall victim to kidney failures, according to medical sources, are those suffering from diabetes, hypertension and/or heart ailments. As the first step in CARAIFA’s long-term plan in aiding in the fight against kidney disease in the Caribbean, CARAIFA launched its kidney awareness website on October 31st, 2003 in Barbados. Today, Information on the Foundation and kidney disease can be viewed at http://www.caraifa.com/caraifa-foundation.html. The website disseminates information re prevention and early detection of kidney disease. The site also provides valuable information about treatment. It is our ultimate intention to have a facility on this site where kidney donors and patients may be located.
CARAIFA SALES CONGRESSES CARAIFA hosts an annual conference of the Life Underwriters/Financial Advisors throughout the region in May each year. Sales Congresses have been held in Barbados, Bahamas, Belize, Curacao, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Antigua, St. Lucia and Trinidad & Tobago and in April 2015 it will be held in Trinidad & Tobago. These congresses feature motivational and inspiring speakers from our region and internationally.

We call this day “Day of Common Concern.” In 2005 we intensified all efforts to alert the population in all territories on the need to prevent kidney disease. Furthermore our aim is to assist kidney patients in dire needs and disseminate information to as many persons as possible.

It is with a great sense of humility that I address you on behalf of the Million Dollar Round Table’s Caribbean Zone. This year your theme “The Pursuit Continues…” is indeed very appropriate for this time of great opportunity that exists ahead. As we continue our pursuit for excellence and success we must remember our sacred responsibility as financial advisors/financial planners/ life insurance agents to our prospects and clients with respect to their pursuit for financial freedom, achieving financial goals and ensuring that all their financial responsibilities are covered. When we assist our prospects and clients in their pursuit then and only then we are truly on the road for our pursuit. The Million Dollar Round Table is the premier association of financial professionals worldwide. To attain MDRT membership a financial advisor must be a member of their respective local association, must be operating an ethically and legally sound practice and must achieve the production requirement. Over the years we have seen an increase in the production requirement for Caribbean advisors to attain MDRT membership. I am pleased to announce that due to the hard work by your Caribbean Country Chairs and Company Chairs we have been successful in our lobbying for the production requirement needed in 2015 (to achieve membership in 2016) to remain the same as 2014, there was no increase. This is great news for all our advisors and aspirants (mentoring program). It’s not that the man did not know how to juggle, he just didn’t have the balls to do it. A dog gave birth to puppies near the road and was cited for littering. I was going to look for my missing watch, but I could never find the time. A grenade thrown into a kitchen in France would result in Linoleum Blownapart. Its predecessor was the Life Underwriters Association of Trinidad and Tobago (LUATT) which was established in 1975 by a group of Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) sales persons with a need to belong to a professional association and to further educate themselves. ROLE AND FUNCTION OF TTAIFA TTAIFA is a registered post- secondary or tertiary institution with head-quarters at 129 EDWARD Street Port of Spain. The Association is ACTT registered and is licensed to provide professional education for Life Insurance & Financial Advisors in Trinidad & Tobago. Through a framework of cooperation with the American College and the Centre for Professional Development, the Association has been providing open enrolment program delivery and facilitation services for a wide range of courses leading to designations such as: Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF), Financial Services Specialist Courses (FSS), the Agency Managers Training Course (AMTC) a module of the Chartered Insurance Agency Manager (CIAM) .
New relevant programmes are being introduced all in the continuing process of better educating and certifying students. One such programme is the Financial Services Certified Professional (FSCP) which began on July 1st 2014 and replaced the LUTCF and the FSS.

These Courses are offered each Semester and there are three semesters per year. Venues are selected Insurance Companies throughout Trinidad and Tobago, based on the locations of the enrollees. Facilitators are qualified and experienced insurance advisors who have been certified by the programme providers. The Association has been showing strong growth. During the period 2003 to 2014, membership has expanded by 28% and enrollment quadrupled by 478%. Our successes have been recorded as follows: 206 advisors received the LUTCF designations during the period 2003- December 2014 69 advisors attained FSS status from 2008 when the programme was introduced to December 2014 and 79 persons completed the AMTC from 2002-2012 In addition to these formal programmes, seminars are arranged from time to time and annual Sales Congresses are organized. The Congresses feature renowned international and regional experts as main platform speakers and facilitators of workshops. The Association aims to continue expanding its programs and enhancing the efficiency and productivity of advisors.
