Brafa 2016, Flower Power !

No tourist can be left untouched by the beauty of Brussels.

The city’s architecture is as diverse as its population, and Art Nouveau gems shine amongst surprising modern constructions. It is the ideal setting for a fair as elegant and eclectic as the Brafa. Belgium is a real cultural hub, renowned for its events, its exhibitions, and its creative output in domains such as classical music, jazz, contemporary dance, fashion and comic strips. Not to forget the undeniable attraction of Belgian cuisine, or the French and Italian culinary delights on offer.

This guide has been created to offer you a selection of the most exciting cultural and gastronomic discoveries.

As for the Brafa, having celebrated its sixtieth birthday, the fair has continued to flourish…

This year, thanks to the re-organization of the main entrance, the new exhibition space can welcome 136 galleries. There is over ten per cent more space and the same increase in the number of exhibitors, an expansion that reflects the increasing demand for stands at the fair, and our desire to propose an even greater variety of the highest quality art.

The eighteen new exhibitors include prestigious galleries that specialize in archaeology, design, and modern and contemporary art. This selection shows the Brafa’s aim to reflect the growing attraction for avant-garde art and draws on Brussels’ ever-strengthening international appeal.

This year’s guest of honour is the Ghent Floralies, and we are delighted to welcome the famous ‘floral composer’ Mark Colle, renowned for his stunning floral creations for fashion shows. His colourful, ephemeral sculptures will fill the fair, adding a touch of exoticism to your visit.

The Brafa’s reputation for quality and eclecticism continues to grow, and we are delighted to invite you once more on a magical journey through history and culture.

In the spring of 2016, Ghent will be a new, dazzling city festival richer with the Ghent Floralies.

For 10 days, flowers & plants, floral art, inspirational gardens and art installations will take over the Arts Quarter in Ghent.

The very first flower and plant exhibition took place in 1809 at an inn in Ghent and has gone through a spectacular metamorphosis of growth and evolution since then. In 2016, the Floralies is leaving the Flanders Expo halls for its 35th edition and returning to the City of Ghent with a dazzling flower and plant festival : leading national and international florists, ornamental growers, landscape architects and artists will carry on a dialogue based on constantly differing perspectives with unique, prestigious city locations at the four sites of the Arts Quarter (the Bijloke site, the Leopold Barracks, Saint Peter’s Square and Citadel Park). The event, with its world-class creations at all 4 sites and the invigorating green and floral pop-up accents along the pathway, offers an unforgettable green experience in the city.

Moreover, this brand-new edition will also, for the first time in the existence of the Floralies, be paying special attention to the integration and interpretation of flowers and plants in modern art installations. The Floralies is therefore very proud to be the guest of honour at the prominent 2016 Brussels Art Fair : both eclectic events consider top quality and authenticity to be of paramount importance.

Before the time actually comes, the Floralies is treating the Brafa public to a preview this winter. In honour of this prominent art and antiques trade fair, leading florist Mark Colle will be creating a number of stunning winter floral creations within the halls of Tour & Taxis. The showpiece is a colourful, airy floral installation incorporating red berries and vibrantly coloured tropical flowers, which will be located at the entrance.

Dynamism and transparency : these are the keywords.

Knowledge of art history is important to art lovers, collectors and dealers alike. For the third year in a row, Brafa has therefore joined forces with the non-profit association BIAPAL to organize the BRAFA ART TALKS , a series of daily lectures.

Curators, collectors, restorers and experts in the art market take turns to share their knowledge and expertise, covering subjects as diverse as modern painting, Old Master drawings, restoration techniques, Egyptology, non-European art, floral decoration or the art of collecting.

The Brussels World Fair opened its doors in spring 1958 in an atmosphere full of the hope of peace and enthusiasm for scientific and technological innovation. About fifty other nations and international organizations participated in this major event, which was the first of its kind since World War II. In this carefree time of renewed prosperity, Expo ’58 offered a new view of the world, linked to the dawn of the Glorious Thirty Years. Two distinct social models that then dominated the world were showcased at the event : the Soviet pavilion promoted the Communist regime’s vision of egalitarian society, while that of the United States presented the American way of life.

The Modernika exhibition explores the ways in which the American dream was reflected in architecture in Belgium in the immediate post-War period and for many decades afterwards. As consumer society flourished, cities were designed with emphasis on large functionalist complexes.

The vision of the ideal vertical city forms the basis of the exhibition, which offers visitors the opportunity to rediscover the Modernist architecture and International Style found in Brussels and Antwerp.

The Boghossian Foundation – Villa Empain and Tina Kim Gallery present Dansaekhwa, one of the late 20th century’s most compelling art movements which arose in South Korea. While each artist of Dansaekhwa has a unique philosophy, many overlapping concerns unite their work.

These include a strong aesthetic ideal focused on the unity between artist and nature as well as a very refined approach to mark making. This emphasis on native cultural idioms was politicized during the 20th century when postwar Korean identity was in a state of radical flux. It is in these tumultuous times that Dansaekhwa evolved and helped shape modern Korean art history. While specifically rooted in a Korean context, Dansaekhwa must be seen as having important formal and conceptual links to parallel movements in Japan and the West including Gutai, Mono-ha and Abstract Expressionism. The exhibition will showcase the works of key masters who defined Dansaekhwa’s development in the 1970. Subject of renewed interest in both Korea and internationally, the exhibition explores a group of artists whose beautiful and politically engaged work continues to have a profound influence on contemporary art.

Istanbul has always had a magical power of attraction for photographers, filmmakers, writers and musicians.

Centuries ago, the city was already a model for artists who explored its rich cultural tradition using all manner of forms of expression. A selection of nineteenth century depictions of Constantinople are now on show for the very first time in Brussels. Photos, videos and film clips bring the highly populated capital to life, while fascinating literary and musical interventions throw fresh light on the city on the Bosphorus. This year the focus is on the young generation, and Europalia’s residency programme gave the Belgian photographer Bieke Depoorter the opportunity to gain inspiration in Istanbul.

Koen Theys casts a highly critical eye on our society and its contradictions. He works primarily – but not exclusively – with his favourite medium, video, and was one of the Belgian pioneers in this field. These two internationally renowned artists question high and low culture and the place of the individual in a society undergoing constant change and evolution. They confront the spectator with videos that focus on culturally anchored phenomena such as parades and traditional painting, offering a critical perspective on social change and the way it reflects social and cultural memory.

Eternity ! To be reborn like Osiris, the god of the afterlife, and rise like the sun from the womb of Nut, the goddess of the sky... These were the expectations of Ancient Egyptians regarding life after death. This exhibition highlights the evolution of Ancient Egyptian burial practices from the Prehistoric Period to the Greek and Roman Period, unveiling the secrets of Egyptian sarcophagi and other masterpieces held by the Museum, including coffins, death masks and embalmed cats, many never shown to the public before.

The visitor will also witness an expert Italian team restoring the coffins of Theban priests that were discovered in 1891 in the Second Cache of Deir el-Bahari.

Pop Art in Belgium plunges the visitor into the Pop movement, which took Europe by storm in the 1960s and flourished in the Belgian art world.

The exhibition addresses major themes such as over-consumption, global conflict, the scarcity of natural resources, social and economic inequality and the mutation of the human being. These complex topics are challenged by positive, constructive and sometimes even humorous visions. This exhibition features ninety drawings by artists from the southern and northern Netherlands, dating from

the 16th and early 17th centuries. Assembled with great care by the collector, these drawings belong to one of the most fascinating periods in the history of draughtsmanship.

In addition to beautiful sketches for prints, paintings, stained glass and tapestries by great masters such as Frans Floris and Peter Paul Rubens, other breath-taking works are on show, including sublime figure studies by Hendrick Goltzius and Cornelis De Vos, and minutely detailed landscapes by Pieter Stevens and Adriaen Frans Boudewijns. Most of these drawings have never been shown to the public before.

Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2000, Gao Xingjian, a Frenchman of Chinese descent, considers himself a gobetween linking the Oriental world (which forms the basis of his identity) and the Occidental world (whose attachment to modernity he finds fascinating). His work also constitutes a gateway between painting and writing.

August Sander (DE , 1876-1964) is considered one of the most influential photographers of the last century.

His series People of the 20th Century is an attempt to catalogue the entire social order using hundreds of portraits. His photographs of ‘the baker’, ‘the farmer’, ‘the intellectual’, ‘the revolutionary’ and so on, have become iconic, but to reduce Sander to this one series would be to do him an injustice. Besides this project, the exhibition provides a kaleidoscopic overview of several topics he covered, spanning five decades of his career. The works on show include cityscapes of Cologne during the Second World War, German landscapes, commissioned work and botanical studies. The exhibition brings together over three hundred original prints, uniting famous and hitherto unknown masterpieces.

In the framework of Europalia Turkey International Arts Festival, the MAS – Museum aan de Stroom is hosting a large-scale exhibition : Istanbul-Antwerp. Port City Talks.

Ten artists focus on the decisive role water played in Istanbul’s development into the city it is today, highlighting a number of similarities with Antwerp. The videos, films and

23 installations by contemporary Turkish artists, combined with a selection of unique treasures illustrating the maritime past of the two cities, will take visitors on a journey to Istanbul. The experience will be enhanced by the captivating exhibition design created by the prominent Turkish architect Murat Tabanlioğlu.

The exhibition examines the evolution of Istanbul as a port city from the perspective of Antwerp, encouraging visitors to trace the birth of modern Istanbul through artworks and artefacts dating from various centuries and the modern multimedia installations. The exhibition invites the public to learn about the Bosphorus and its inlet, the Golden Horn, and the regions behind it. The show also explores the relationship between Istanbul and Antwerp, shedding new light on the towers that rise above the two cities, taking a closer look at the docks, cranes and shipyards in both ports, and guiding visitors along the bridges that span the Bosporus and through the tunnels that run beneath the River Scheldt.

Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin (Izmir 1957-2007 Istanbul) was fascinated by the difference between promise and reality.

The promise could lie in the name of a cheap hotel seeming to offer the experience of a distant place, or in the branding of a mass-produced product developed to evoke luxury or exoticism. Alptekin traced the profound effects of global capitalism on the everyday, observing the movement of people and products across geographies, particularly in the period following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Alptekin used the traces of the burgeoning effects of mobility, trade and image circulation as the material for his art, questioning its representational value.

Today, Alptekin is one of the most significant figures in the established contemporary art scene of Istanbul.

The exhibition Democratic Luxury is a major retrospective of his work, bringing together pieces produced during the two decades spanning the millennium. These include photographs, sculptures, installations, neon texts, videos and collages.

POWER FLOWER. FLORAL STILL LIVES IN THE LOW COUNTRIES

In collaboration with Rockox House, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp is presenting a small, selective exhibition of about twenty-five works that endeavours to trace the development of floral still lives in the southern and northern Netherlands. The exhibition includes artists such as Osias Beert, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Daniël Seghers, Jan Davids, De Heem, Jan van Huysum and Rachel Ruysch.

Since time immemorial, art in Flanders, Brabant and Holland has been characterized by the observation of nature and the quest for naturalness. Nonetheless, until the late 16th century, plants and flowers were only to be found in the margins of illustrations depicting saints in books of hours. However, the flourishing of botanical knowledge and a burgeoning fondness for the natural world prompted artists to start considering the flower arrangement as a self-contained motif. The period straddling the year 1600 was under the spell of the ‘Power Flower’, and this new era lasted for a long time afterwards. The exhibition’s title is no exaggeration : the flower painter and Jesuit Daniël Seghers, for example, was able to win great favour with the Prince of Orange by means of his unparalleled still lives.

The Groeningemuseum possesses five key works by Georges Vantongerloo, dating from 1916-1963. The museum is marking the fiftieth anniversary of the artist’s death by displaying these pieces, supplemented by a number of other works loaned by other museums. Vantongerloo helped to lay the foundations of Abstract Art in Belgium through his collaboration with De Stijl and Theo van Doesburg. He also had a Fauvist period at the beginning of his career. The tight geometric lines and shapes of the 1920s gave way to more undulating lines and patterns in the late 1930s. After 1945 he started making sculptures using metal wire, coloured plastic and plexiglass, inspired by the intricacies of mathematics and cosmology. Vantongerloo is not only one of the most important Belgian artists of the 20th century, he is also one of the most fascinating due to his multifaceted career.

With the purchase of the collection of the Bruges print expert Guy Van Hoorebeke in 2014, the Groeningemuseum suddenly found itself 2.000 prints richer. The collection contains works by many of Europe’s greatest graphic artists, including masters such as Brueghel, Rembrandt, Piranesi, Goya, Ensor and Alechinsky.

Fifteen works of art from the museum’s own collection, supplemented by selected masterpieces on loan from other galleries and museums at home and abroad, have been brought together to highlight the stylistic and thematic fascination exerted by the Flemish Primitives in the 19th century.

This romantic attachment to the art of medieval Flemish painting occurred in the context of a Gothic revival that spread all over Europe. In our region, this renewal of interest was primarily directed towards the life and works of Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling. Artists from Bruges such as Edmond Van Hove and Eugène Legendre were inspired by their renowned predecessors, and their choice of materials, style and composition shows their desire to follow in the footsteps

of the medieval masters. At that time, a number of romantic anecdotes and legends about Van Eyck, Memling and the other Flemish Primitives were also rediscovered, serving to inspire paintings and engravings by artists such as Joseph Ducq, Jean-Baptiste Madou, Edouard Wallays and Henri Dobbelaere. These genre pieces and historical tableaux offer an anecdotal and often sentimental image of the past.

Close-ups in a shower ; an explosion ; a couple in the yellow-green neon light of a car park ; a wandering wild dog... Devriendt’s small paintings act as teasers, activating the viewer’s imagination and inciting speculation about associations between paintings. His precise yet sensual way of painting sets him apart. Often placed in diverse categories, including contemporary Flemish Primitive Art, his work is hard to define, and his paintings have a certain ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ quality, even taking on the characteristics of film. His series reflect contemporary image flow, where intimate observation can alternate unexpectedly with virtual images. Devriendt investigates the effects of painted images on the spectator with a great sense of drama, provoking contact between the spectator and the artist’s alter ego.

‘In the more recent series I start with a character, a protagonist who may or may not perform certain actions. It’s as if I just have to follow their decisions. This alter ego makes my content and images.’ Robert Devriendt has a studio in Bruges and works with famous galleries such as Marlborough Fine Art in London, Galerie Albert Baronian in Brussels, and Galerie Loevenbruck in Paris.

Two hundred years ago, the United Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed under King William I. Ghent was therefore awash with orange in 2015, and the Design Museum in Gent was no exception. Belgium and the Netherlands are therefore engaged in an exciting confrontation in the museum, because the Design Derby BE/NL 1815-2015 exhibition brings together the best designers and products from the two countries dating from the past two centuries. The pieces on show exemplify graceful Belgian art nouveau and its more streamlined Dutch variant, refined Belgian craftsmanship and the more conceptual design of our northern neighbours.

In collaboration with the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam), the Design Museum Gent is exhibiting over five hundred works made of silver, glassware and colourful plastic, even including items like everyday toasters.

The work featured is by designers such as Henry van de Velde, Hendrik Berlage, Albert Van Huffel, Jaap Gidding, Gaston Eysselinck, Mart Stam, Charles Graffart, Andries Copier, Stephan Winteroy, Dick Simonis, Jean-Paul EmondsAlt, Gert Dumbar, Martin Margiela, Jan Jansen, Eric Symons, Waac’s Design, Hannes Van Severen/Fien Muller and Wiekie Somers. The exhibition will reveal striking similarities and differences between the two countries.

This is the first time that the design practices of Belgium and the Netherlands have been compared on such a large scale !

The Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent houses an exceptional collection of 17th century Dutch paintings, specializing in a period regarded as a golden age for the arts. Ayşe Erkmen (1949, Istanbul, TUR) and Ann Veronica Janssens (1956, Folkestone, UK) are sculptors of roughly the same generation. For both, sculpture is a concept that goes far beyond the three-dimensional nature of the work of art and the spatial relationship between the work and the viewer. Ayşe Erkmen’s artistic practice is characterized by her interest in the historical and social context in which a work of art is born. She makes ordinarily invisible elements and structures temporarily or permanently visible. Ann Veronica Janssens engages with sensory experience and the moment when body and space meet.

She experiments with the intangible, exploring light, colour and sound in her research into the way we perceive space and movement. In spring 2016, at the invitation of the City of Ghent, Erkmen and Janssens will each be installing a permanent sculpture on the Korenmarkt. The S.M.A.K. is holding this double exhibition to contextualize these works and to examine how the two artists’ approaches relate.

Sol LeWitt (USA, 1928 - 2007) was one of the most important minimal and conceptual artists ; one of the founders of the radical, rational aesthetic that developed

27 in opposition to the emotional American Expressionism of the 1950s and 1960s. In Minimal Art, the form of the artwork is reduced to the extreme. Conceptual Art went one step further by making the concept or underlying idea of the artwork more important than the beauty or physical form of the piece. In both cases, the artist fades into the background. In 1968, LeWitt began creating his monumental, usually geometric wall drawings that were produced following strict instructions by his assistants.

In 1976, S.M.A.K. purchased one of them : ‘Wall Drawing No.36 / Intersecting Bands of four Colors (Black – Blue – Red – Yellow) from four Directions – 90 cm wide (symmetrically)’ (1970). For this exhibition, this piece has been recreated on a large scale for the first time since the museum opened in 1999. This event also marked the beginning of a presentation of Minimal Art and Conceptual Art from the S.M.A.K. collection and initiated a number of performances that take the wall drawing as their starting point. The exhibition therefore enables transient exhibition and art forms to interact with Sol LeWitt’s monumental work.

In The Bottom Line, the S.M.A.K. presents work by about fifty international artists to showcase the significance of drawing in contemporary art. Drawing is many things : it is one of the first things a child does ; a tool for preliminary

study ; a masterly discipline per se, and one of the foundations of the arts. It can be quick, slow, controlled, expressive, sketchy, hermetic, illuminating, direct, technical, observational, fantastical, open, intimate, detached and so on, but one thing never changes : there is nothing quite as unique and personal as a drawing.

The Bottom Line shows various aspects of drawing as a form of contemporary art. The works on show range from abstract to figurative, small to large format, sketches to large-scale projects and some involve drawing as film or performance. Their content spans personal diaries and political comment, self and social portraits. Some drawings have been specially done for the exhibition, and some are being created in situ.

In this exhibition, the artist Gauthier Oushoorn (°1986, Belgium) documents and contextualizes his residence in Istanbul and eastern Turkey using video, drawing, sculpture and photography. Drawing inspiration from the esoteric Sufi principle of unity in multiplicity, he has produced artistic and architectural interventions inspired by diverse components of Islamic architecture.

Architecture is Oushoorn’s recurring frame of reference, and his craftsmanship enables him to explore the elements of space and the way they combine in an innovative and often unexpected way.

Paris, Rio and Beijing Morris makes paintings and films about the codes and power structures of particular cities, focusing most recently on Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Beijing. Her abstract paintings are graphic colour compositions consisting of lines, patterns and grids, evoking a virtual architecture.

Identity and power Morris has delved into a wide range of subjects, including the Olympic Games, crowd control, the perfume industry, airports, advertising, prostitution and the carnival of Sambódromo. Her work does not fit into one category, drawing from diverse sources such as Pop art, conceptual art and geometric abstraction. Since the mid-nineties, she has been exploring the complex tensions between social space, identity and power.

The exhibition at M presents four films, a selection of paintings and a new mural.

Medieval sculptors are known for their use of beautifully carved wood and chiselled stone to tell stories. Due to the renovation of the Gruuthuse Museum, thirty statues from Bruges are being presented at M alongside pieces from M’s own collection. Together, these works offer a concise overview of late-Gothic mastery (1350-1550). The Reading Madonna by Adriaen van Wesel, Saint Michael and the Dragon, the unique Silver Justice Court Bust and Two Kneeling Angels are just a few of the highlights from the Bruges collection. The masterpieces to be shown from M’s collection include a reredos depicting the marriage of Anna and Joachim that has never been exhibited before, and a sixteenth-century wooden statue of Christ by Jan Borman entitled Ecce Homo. Visitors will be given the opportunity to write the labels for the artworks.
