For some members of Greek Life, the term “brother” and “sister” takes on a more literal meaning.

Both Grant and Will Stoltz decided to apply to the UA and both chose to rush Pi Kappa Alpha, one of the many fraternities on campus. However, Grant Stoltz, a marketing junior, stressed his desire for his brother to choose the fraternity that best fit him.

“I just said rushing probably would be the best thing for you to do,” Grant Stoltz said. “I said check out Pike, but that’s about all I’ve said as far as promotional.”

Although Grant Stoltz did not push his brother to rush, Will Stoltz, a pre-business freshman, chose the fraternity because of his sense of belonging within the fraternity.

“I went to a bunch of houses, but as soon as I walked in the door I got a good feeling about it,” Will

Stoltz said. “It seemed way more like me than the rest of any of the other houses.”

Despite the fact that the two are in the same fraternity, they do not spend an excessive amount of time together. The brothers see each other at the fraternity house and over the weekend when they visit their parents.

“We probably see each other more so than if we weren’t in the same fraternity,” Grant Stoltz said. “But definitely not a crazy amount, I guess. We’re not getting sick of each other.”

Both also said the fraternity brings them closer and provides them one more thing in common.

“It’s a unique experience having your little brother actually be your brother … your fraternity brother,” Grant Stoltz said. “You have your actual brother and your fraternity brothers, and now it’s both.”

Alumni host luncheon for past, present Wildcats to recognize university tradition YARA ASKAR Arizona Daily Wildcat

The UA Alumni Association is inviting generations of Wildcats back to campus to reminisce about their past and celebrate their achievements with their children.

With the help of the UA Parents and Family Association, the Alumni Association is putting on a Legacy Luncheon to allow past generations to return to campus and enjoy a weekend with their children during Family Weekend.

The luncheon will be held on Saturday in the Rincon Room of the Student Union Memorial Center.

During the luncheon, parents will get up and introduce themselves along with their children. This year, the Alumni Association has invited Marvin D. “Swede” Johnson’s fourth generation to represent the meaning of a continuing, family generation attending the UA. Marvin D. Johnson is the namesake of the Alumni Association’s building.

“We have these luncheons as a way to recognize the Wildcat family tradition,” said Jill Hall, vice president of student and alumni outreach. “To reinforce you came to our school, you’re a Wildcat and your children now attend the same

But the Willertons and Stiller aren’t the only ones keeping family close on campus.

Vice President of Student Affairs Melissa Vito and her two twin sons, Zach and Anthony, also attend the UA as journalism seniors. But unlike Emma Willerton, the UA wasn’t always an obvious choice.

“I kind of tried to do everything I could not to go to the U of A,” Anthony Vito said.

“My mom’s worked here my whole life, people were singing ‘Bear Down’ in the delivery room … I thought I would want a change, but I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else.”

Anthony Vito added that, while he had the support of his family to attend a university out of state, he decided to stay for the financial benefits, which was a consideration for both brothers.

“I can remember as little girls we would go to all the football games and the alumni event with my father,” Engel said. “And we would talk about how wonderful the family weekend is.”

With four generations of the Johnson family attending the university, Engel said this means they’re spreading their love and passion for the university throughout the family.

“The university is just like familyhood. We are just so intertwined.”

While the lunch dates and savings continue to be obvious benefits for both families, there were some worries about a lack of breathing room.

“I was really worried,” Anthony Vito said.

“Wanting to go out of state and then having to go in state, there was that initial panic.”

He added that while his mother knows a number of people on campus, the only difference for him is that he knows more faculty than other students might.

Melissa Vito said that although she plans to attend Family Weekend in a professional capacity, the chances that she will see her sons are pretty good.

“I’ll probably [do] more on the work end of stuff,” she said, “but we’ll connect up.”

“It’s almost a comfort knowing that she’s going to have a great experience the way that I did,” Nicole Prokes said. “Knowing she’s in Greek Life and having that same experience is a really awesome thing for her.”

Both Nicole Prokes and Grant Stoltz said that, despite their desire to help their siblings, they do not want to be overbearing and tell them what to do.

“I’ve had to take step back and let him find his own way through things,” Grant Stoltz said. “I don’t want to be there to parent my brother, but if he ever says, ‘Hey, I need help with something,’ I’ll be there in a heartbeat.”

With construction for the Sun Link Tucson Modern Streetcar in full swing, campus-goers during Family Weekend can expect a number of detours and road closures in various areas on campus, both for drivers and pedestrians.

Seven parking garages on campus are available for guest parking at various rates during the three days of Family Weekend: Friday parking in all garages, except the Second Street Parking Garage, costs $2 per hour before 5 p.m., $1 per hour after, and $8 all day. Second Street Parking Garage rates are $2 per hour before 5 p.m., or $10 all day.

Saturday parking rates are $5 to $10 for all parking garages throughout the day, and Sunday parking is free in all garages except Cherry Avenue Parking Garage, which follows Friday’s rates.

With a greater amount of people on campus compared to a typical weekend, Sgt. Joe Bermudez with the University of Arizona Police Department advised that campus-goers be aware of their surroundings at all times during their visit.

Redfern family planted in Arizona men’s golf history While Trent and Brenden still go to their father for tips, there is someone they each trust more when it comes to critiquing their game.

“Trent is the first person I will go to now if I’m looking for advice,” Brenden said. “It just makes sense, because no one has seen me play as much as him or knows my game as well as him.

“I have been watching my brother play ever since I was 5. Watching and competing with him I think has pushed me to be a better golfer but also has built a passion for the game.”

Off the golf course, the brothers live together in a house with two other teammates.

Anderson admires their commitment to each other and he called the brothers’ relationship a “blessing.”

Trent and Brenden intend to pursue professional golf careers, but currently enjoy living in Tucson and being Wildcats. Their decision to come to Arizona had a lot to do with their father but also one another.

“My brother is awesome,” Trent said. “I’m really happy we get along so well and that we’ve been able to play together for all these years. For both of us to be Wildcats just seems right.”

A

rizona men’s golf head coach Jim Anderson is in his first year and he is attempting to turn his team into a family, as he believes the Wildcats will perform better if they feel as if they are part of a solid unit. Luckily, the team he inherited has two brothers, senior Trent and sophomore Brenden Redfern.

The brothers were born and raised in Austin, Texas, along with their five siblings.

Their father, Ken Redfern, attended the UA and played on the golf team from 1968-1972, so the sport runs in their family.

“Trent and Brenden are fantastic people first,” Anderson said. “They are very committed and I think because of their father they have a great sense of pride in Wildcat golf.”

With a strong golf legacy, the Redfern brothers pretty much grew up on the golf course. After a while most of Trent and Brenden’s four brothers and one sister moved on to other sports, but Trent and Brenden stuck with golf. Both began winning tournaments when they were around 8 years old.

ast year, the Tutogi family wore shirts reading “Family Always,” with an Arizona logo in place of “A” and Washington’s logo as the “W,” when the Wildcats traveled to Seattle in a 42-31 loss to UW. On Saturday, the Tutogi family will travel to Tucson as Taimi Tutogi, the Arizona fullback/defensive end, and Thomas Tutogi, a UW linebacker, face off for just the second time in the past two years.

With Thomas on defense and Taimi occasionally on offense, the possibility of the two brothers clashing on the field has certainly crossed their minds. But just because they’re family doesn’t mean they are going to hold back.

“If the right play is called, I’ll definitely meet him in the hole,” Taimi said. “Saturday’s going to be fun and exciting, but he’s still wearing a ‘W’ on his chest, so I gotta go after him like anyone else.”

“It’ll be good,” Thomas said, laughing. “I’m not gonna back down.”

The Tutogi family will be sporting a new shirt design, and both brothers said they are excited to be playing against each other again, especially considering the magnitude of the game. Both

Washington and Arizona enter the game 3-3 and are fighting for a bowl berth.

Thomas leads the Huskies in tackles with 38, while Taimi has received time on both offense and defense. Taimi has eight receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown as a fullback, and one fumble recovery and tackle with the defensive line.

The Tutogis speak over the phone a few times every week, and at least once before and after games. But, if all had gone according to plan, the duo would be playing alongside each other in an Arizona uniform.

Thomas, who is 13 months younger than Taimi, went to Southwestern Junior College in his freshman year. Soon after, offers from top Pac-12 schools USC and Washington came rolling in. Thomas said he didn’t want to play for the Trojans or the Huskies. He wanted to play with his brother.

“He said, ‘I don’t wanna go to USC. I don’t wanna go to Washington. I’m gonna wait for Arizona to offer me,’” Taimi said. “‘I wanna play with you,’ he said. I talked to [former head coach Mike] Stoops, I talked to [former defensive coordinator Tim] Kish and I guess they didn’t wanna jump on it, and I was puzzled as much as he was.”

Thomas isn’t bitter.

“I just put the pieces where they lay and let them fall,” he said.

“I made my decision here [in Washington] and I love it.”

While Taimi certainly would like to be playing with his brother, after playing with him throughout high school, Pop Warner leagues and in the backyard as kids, Taimi said he’s happy that his brother is finally paving his own way.

“I’m happy it worked out. He loves it there,” Taimi said. “His whole life he’s always been Taimi’s little brother, and now he’s in Washington and he’s making a name for himself.”

Thomas credits Taimi with toughening him up — after Taimi pushed him around growing up as most big brothers do — and makes sure to thank him when they talk on Saturdays before games.

“He does an amazing job setting a path for me to follow and I thank him for it before every game,” Thomas said.

Taimi played fullback for three years, but in the fall Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez started to give him time at defensive end due to a lack of depth and a multitude of injuries. So that raises the question, who is the better tackler?

“Me,” Taimi said, without hesitation. “I’ll always be faster, always be stronger, I’ll always jump higher. I always tell him he’ll never be able to beat me up. I think he understands that.”

“I don’t know about that,” Thomas said, laughing. “Growing up together, we’ve always been on the same side and I’ve never had to face him or hit him. At the end of the day, he’s my brother and I love him to death, and that’s what it is.”

arents are people too, but some of us have to go to college before we fully come to terms with that concept.

When I was about 10 years old my parents divorced. While it was hardly a surprise, I didn’t expect it to have such long-term repercussions on my life that continue to affect me today. Google can unearth thousands of statistics pointing to the fact that children of divorced parents, or “broken families” as the more conservative call them, struggle when it comes to building relationships of their own as they grow older.

One such statistic from the 1980s, released in a study by the Harvard University Press, found that children who experience divorce in their families, especially multiple divorces, earn lower grades and were rated by their peers as “less pleasant to be around.”

I can’t speak too candidly about my supposed unpleasantness as an adolescent, but I’m taking a cue from Vice President Joe Biden and calling malarkey. Divorce is a complicated issue, and perhaps I’m in the minority for harboring resentment about something that happened a decade ago, but most people I’ve talked to that went through a divorce in their family feel similarly.

Our parents’ mistakes do not become us, but if those mistakes lead to mutual happiness, then how bad can they be? My dad started dating soon after my parents separated, went through his bachelor phase (round two or three, I should say) and got remarried my freshman year of college. Mulling over the word “stepmom” still doesn’t always come naturally, but if anything it taught me that, for better or for worse, there’s someone out there for every stage of life you’ll go through. They’re happy together and I gained a new member of my family.

ifty years ago, I was a junior enrolled in the College of Business and Public Administration.

The UA was much smaller then, both in terms of student enrollment and campus geography.

There were fewer buildings and more open space between them. The composition of the student body was also very different in 1962. In the BPA College, we were mostly white and male. While there were a few women enrolled, I seldom had any women in my classes. There were also very few minority students in any of my classes.

The faculty also reflected this lack of diversity.

I had only one female instructor in my four years of undergraduate study. The business faculty was representative of their generation — tough, demanding and for the most part with the compassion of a drill sergeant. They believed strongly in the Protestant work ethic and the importance of training us to manage successful organizations.

Because so many of them were World War II veterans, they operated from a worldview that emphasized maintaining America’s dominant role, both economically and militarily.

A visitor to campus in the fall of 1962 would have noticed the large number of uniformed students. It was my first semester out of uniform — my ROTC uniform that is. All men were required to enroll in four semesters of ROTC training. We spent two hours a week in class and one hour in drill. We polished our brass buttons, shined our black shoes and marched, without a lot of enthusiasm, on fields now occupied by the Administration, Psychology, and Education buildings. My ROTC instructors were all war heroes with stories of bravery that captivated our interest and increased our respect.

There were, of course, faculty members who were eccentric. I recall an accounting instructor who seemed to really like plaid shirts and ties with polka dots, worn with pants pulled up to his armpits.

Perhaps the reason I have his image burned into my memory was the fact that his class was offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:40 a.m. Yes, I do mean the horrific (at least by college student standards) hour of 7:40 a.m. It was rumored that the one woman in the class wore her PJ’s covered by a long raincoat. Just the possibility of that being

the case was enough to keep us somewhat alert at that hour on a Saturday morning.

The athletic program was just a shadow of what it is today. The university competed in the Border Conference against teams in New Mexico and Texas, and of course Arizona State. There were no women’s sports. Title IX was years away.

The athletes were not afforded any of the resources for academic support that today’s athletes have available.

One of the highlights of attending games in the small confines of Bear Down Gymnasium was being able to watch the antics of an always inebriated, red-faced faculty member, who spent the game yelling at the referees from his perch in the East Balcony.

Community support seemed limited to attendance at football games. There was no TV coverage or Wildcat Club. Football games were a social highlight of each fall semester. It was our custom to attend games wearing coats and ties.

The women wore dresses with heels.

There were those events that we didn’t write home about — like a panty raid. The residents of Graham-Greenlee and Papago men’s residence halls were rousted out of their rooms at about 9 p.m. one night by police action in the parking lot behind our dorms. There were probably a couple hundred of us standing around when someone yelled, “On to Yavapai!”

Our reception was a lukewarm one, probably influenced by the presence of the campus police.

Again, our unknown leader yelled instructions; “On to Maricopa!” This time however, we were met with an enthusiastic reception by our female counterparts, who, while gathered on the front balcony, showered the crowd below with an assortment of undies. I must also mention that a ladder played a part in this event, but perhaps another time for the rest of the story.

I know this will be a difficult exercise for many of you, but can you picture your grammy on that balcony? Perhaps it would be too weird to even try to go there. Perhaps in another 50 years?

I

t’s hard to imagine the UA as a campus with ample parking, few women and panty raids from balconies. But in 1962, the student body of roughly 16,000 had far less diversity, gender differences and athletics.

Our current student body composition is a major change from the white, predominantly male years of the ‘60s. My grandaddy rarely saw women or minorities in his college career. His freshman class of 12,000 students was then an all-time high, but few of his classmates were women.

The enrollment in my freshman year of college — in 2010 — was also a record setting number, and the numbers have only increased since. Out of the 39,236 students enrolled in 2011, there were 1,778 more women than men. There were roughly 12,800 minority students the same year.

Student demographics have drastically changed, but I guess some things stay the same. Like my grandaddy, I too have encountered people wearing their pajamas, except it happens every day. It’s a little weird, but most people just assume the student woke up late and don’t think twice about it.

Back then it was quite the point of gossip in my grandaddy’s 7:40 am accounting class. I have a feeling that if 7:40 am classes even existed any more there would be a lot more than just one girl wearing her PJs. The greatest change in student dress is demonstrated by what people used to wear to football games. Contrary to 2012’s dress code of chopped up T-shirts and casually exposed bandeau bras, students used to actually dress up for games in dresses, heels, coats and ties. Classy, but I wonder if the blazing September heat made students wish they could wear a simple Zona-Zoo t-shirt. But regardless of what we wear 50 years later, football games are still a social highlight.

Other social highlights of 1962 were a bit more questionable. If 100 boys showed up tonight at an all-girls dorm and proceeded to enter via a ladder, UAPD would be called in an instant with some serious citations to hand out. But if the girls reacted like they did in 1962, the boys would be showered with an assortment of panties.

I don’t see that going so well with the authorities. However, it’s not all that different than a well-known frat going door to door in my freshman year dorm asking for panty donations for their “panty party.”

It’s hard to imagine, but our parents and grandparents used to be a little wild, too. No matter who your family is, remember this weekend that even with a 50-year difference, you can still find plenty to relate to.

Late Night Variety Show featuring Sailesh the Hypnotist

Rainbow Family Reception

The free event will showcase resources for the campus LGBTQ community, and will run from 3-5 p.m. in SUMC’s Union Gallery.

Audience members will participate in hypnosis, improv and music from 8-10 p.m. in the Student Union Memorial Center’s Grand Ballroom. Tickets for the show are sold out.

SATURDAY Wildcat Carnival

The Mall will feature live music, a number of carnival attractions, inflatables and games from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will cost $5.

Legacy Lunch

The lunch will allow past and present Wildcats to hand out UA lapel pins during a ceremony.

The event is sponsored by the UA Parents and Family Association. The lunch will start at noon in the Rincon Room, cost $20, and is intended to finish in time for attendees to make it to the tailgate.

MIS Department Zipperman Scholars Parents Brunch

Invite-only event is hosted by the Management Information Systems department in the Eller College. The brunch will provide parents an overview of the MIS field, and will last from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in McClelland Hall.

UAMA presents an ‘Artist Talk with NY-based Abstract Painter David Headley’

Tailgate

Redington Restaurant will cater a tailgate on the Mall from 4-7 p.m. before the football game.

Admission is $5 for students and children under 12, and $20 for adults.

Campus Recreation Free Fitness Saturday

The Rec Center will feature free fitness classes all day for UA students and their families from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Family Mountain Bike Ride

Outdoor Adventures is offering gear rentals and a guided ride through the bike trails of the Tucson Mountain Park from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Cost is $22, with an additional $10 to rent a bike.

Campus Rec Family Sport Tournaments

Various tournaments will be held throughout Saturday for free. Tournaments start at 9 a.m. for singles racquetball, 10 a.m. for two-on-two basketball, or 11 a.m. for four-on-four sand volleyball. Registration will be at Friday’s pool party.
