Senators approve $5,000 for block party RACHEL MCCLUSKEY Arizona Daily Wildcat

ASUA approved $5,000 to pay for a festival to promote student voting in the upcoming presidential election during its weekly meeting on Wednesday. The Red, White and Blue Block Party will take place on Oct. 3 directly following the presidential debate, which will be broadcast on screens. A concert will also be included in the festival. Although ASUA has narrowed the performing artist down to two choices, the association has not disclosed any names. Contests will also be held between dorms, clubs and greek organizations, with prizes such as a $500 donation to philanthropy in the winner’s name or a catered dinner. According to Tess Korbesmeyer, the UA’s campus organizer for the Arizona Students’ Association, voting efforts so far have resulted in the registration of more than 1,000 students.

Mackin was born in Augsburg, Germany, into a military family, and eventually moved to Arizona where he attended high school in Sierra Vista. He decided to come to the UA because of the engineering program and because his brother, now in his first year at MIT as a graduate student, also attended the university. When asked about his memorable experiences at the UA, Mackin mentioned his work on projects and his excitement when he reached an end result and

While growing up, Casey Mackin would disassemble objects and put them together again just for fun. Over time, because of his capabilities with computers, friends and neighbors would ask him to fix their electronics. His obsession soon transferred to computers, and now Mackin, an electrical and computer engineering senior, has earned a $10,000 scholarship to pursue his passion. Mackin has gone from fixing electronics in his neighborhood to working with UA researchers on embedded systems, specifically on creating

Increasing outreach

In an effort to offer more physical classes, one ASUA senator is looking to implement a course that would earn students three credits for a few hours a week in the Student Recreation Center. Political science junior and Associated Students of the University of Arizona Sen. Danielle Novelly said she plans to create a class that will broadly cover topics such as health and wellness, but have physical recreation activities included, too. The health portion would be similar to the currently offered general education Nutrition, Food and You course. While Novelly has yet to determine a curriculum, an idea for the recreation portion of the class includes going to the Rec Center and participating in various activities, much like other classes that have a discussion section. “As opposed to a discussion, like a normal course,” Novelly said, “maybe go to the Rec and there would be like a spin class or like something like that.” Novelly has been working with Mark Zakrzewski, the Rec Center’s associate director for programs, to develop the course.

ASUA also discussed how to be more accessible to students. In three
