this show season, new products and the sharing of information will become even more important than never before. On that theme, inside this latest issue of SPN, we take a look at the returning Piscine Global Europe in Lyon – a show which was, prior to COVID, the most important wet leisure event for all sectors across the industry and one which will be pulling out all the stops to pick up from where it left off in 2018.

Talking of sectors, we have a piece on tiled spas and swim spas – a niche but growing sector which offers stunning bespoke and durable solutions for both high-end domestic and commercial markets alike.

As I drove down the motorway recently, looking at the trees across the surrounding countryside whose leaves are now turning an autumnal mix of golds, browns and reds, it struck me just how rapidly our record summer has moved on. My central heating system, which has lay dormant for months now, has also kicked back in! It’s seems crazy just how quickly time flies and how many changes have taken place around the world since last year’s October issue.

Sadly, the bearing those changes have had on our lives have not been welcomed as most of the developments have been of a negative nature.

For example, twelve months ago, I spoke about supply chain issues and the challenges of inflation. A year on, and I doubt anyone could have predicted quite how bad things would be, particularly when it comes to rising prices. Certainly nobody had the current situation in Ukraine unfolding, and in doing so, adding massively to existing challenges across the board.

How the wet leisure industry responds to these challenging and changing times remains to be seen, but it’s clear that tougher times appear to lay ahead for all, regardless of sector, at least in the short term. Which is a real shame as it felt that COVID had really taken a back seat and a sense of normality – if there ever was such a thing – was resuming.

So, with the summer sadly behind us, autumn has most definitely arrived. And that has traditionally heralded the start of show season too, which in turn usually means new product launches and a chance to catch up with peers and exchange stories, advice and thoughts on the season which has just passed. I suspect

Continuing on the subject of high-end, hot tubs are also under the spotlight as we look at premium models costing in excess of £10,000 from a variety of brands.

We’ve also an in depth look at the latest enclosure solutions that are extending the use of the outdoor swimming season whilst simultaneously providing security, reducing costs and minimising the effort involved in pool ownership. Products for safety flooring make a return along with counter-current systems as we take an in-depth look at the latest products which provide pools, particularly those with a smaller footprint, with a powerful option to produce a more complete swimming environment.

As if that wasn’t enough, we do a Q&A with new Certikin Managing Director Neil Stephenson, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams gives his thoughts on virtual reality, AI and real life, whilst STA pool plant tutor Ruth Prophet, who is a duty officer at the University of Stirling Sport, looks at pool hall lighting.

We’ve also a piece from Plastica’s Commercial Covers team on replacing a cover step-by-step, plus a Project Showcase on the new Britannia Leisure Centre in Hackney.

There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus, we’ve got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and further afield.

So with everything covered, hopefully we’ve provided something for everyone in this latest issue. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Heatstar Replace Old Heat Recovery System Using A Bespoke Approach

Located in the village of Freshwater on the Isle of Wight, West Wight Sports & Community Centre, with its main and learner pools, has long been an integral part of the local community.

At the end of last year, a decision was made by the centre to replace the existing environmental control system, a Heatstar Taurus 120 that was installed over 20 years ago. Although the old Taurus system was still working, it was relying solely on fresh air exchange with no method of heat recovery and the ongoing running costs and maintenance had become a cost burden to the centre.

The replacement unit chosen for the wet leisure facilities was a Heatstar Phoenix E 12000 Super+ – a hybrid heat recovery ventilation system that offers dual heat recovery methods for expelled pool room air. It represents the optimum and uncompromised environmental control solution for the highest specification indoor swimming pools and encompasses all the available energy saving technologies such as EC fans, a high efficiency plate recuperator and dehumidifying heat pump to be fully compliant with the latest building control regulations.

The main issue Heatstar faced was how to fit all of this technology into a modern unit that could also be located within the existing equipment’s footprint, which also had very

New Prime Minister Liz Truss has been warned ‘crucial’ swimming pools could be forced to close in the coming months if they don’t receive financial help to cover soaring energy costs.

Swim England Chief Executive Jane Nickerson has written to Ms Truss after she won the vote to be the next Conservative leader and replace Boris Johnson as Prime Minister.

In her letter, Jane stated the ‘urgent situation’ has put pools and leisure centres under ‘real threat’ on the back of a challenging time for the sector following the coronavirus pandemic.

Jane wrote: “Swimming pools are crucial to the health and wellbeing of the nation but urgently need government support to survive

limited access to both the premises and the plant room.

The solution – Heatstar’s sales and design team were able to create a special ‘one off’ bespoke unit that was split into three sections to allow it to be craned over the surrounding buildings to a purpose-built landing pad outside the plant room. The unit was then moved into place within the plant room one section at a time and reconnected to the existing ductwork, all in a timely manner.

the huge current challenges posed by the soaring cost of energy.

“Whilst we appreciate the complexity of this energy crisis and its potential solutions, failure to effectively engage will lead to the loss in the coming months of swimming pools and leisure centres that are at the very heart of our communities and which support some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

“Swim England urges your government to recognise the scale of the issue facing swimming pools and leisure facilities

and to provide the financial support required to safeguard the future of these vital facilities as a matter of urgency.

“A survey of public sector leisure multisite facility operators revealed that without financial support to mitigate against the impact of these increases we will see up to 85% of facilities likely or extremely likely to be forced to stop operating completely in the next six months,” wrote Jane who also called for a meeting to discuss the situation further.

IN BRIEF

TWINSCAPE GROUP ENTERS INTO SPORTS PARTNERSHIP

Global operator, Twinscape Group, the preeminent designer, and manufacturer of Hydrofloors® submersible floors for luxury swimming pools and spas has entered a partnership with Extreme E team – JBXE, the first sports partnership for the company.

Twinscape agreed sponsored for JBXE in two rounds of the Extreme E Electric Off-Road Racing Series – Round 4, Copper X Prix in Chile which took place in September, and Round 5, Energy X Prix in Uruguay, which take place in November.

Twinscape’s branding appears prominently on the livery of the JBXE Odyssey Car for both rounds and on the suits of the drivers. The partnership also offers both companies unique cross marketing/promotional opportunities.

Twinscape’s CEO, Robertus Plompen said: “This is a tremendous opportunity for Twinscape to be at the forefront of an exciting sport, to support the JBXE team and its drivers whilst also reaching new and diverse international audiences with our cutting edge Hydrofloors movable pool and spa floors.”

£13.1M SHROPSHIRE POOL GETS APPROVAL

Plans for a new multi-million pound swimming pool and fitness centre in Whitchurch, Shropshire whichhave been formally approved. The new centre will be built on the site of the old pool at Whitchurch has been closed since March 2020. The new facility will feature a six-lane, 25m pool with a movable floor, a fitness suite, function rooms and café.

The project had initially been expected to cost between £7m and £8m, but had risen to more than £13m – partly due to inflation and increased construction costs.

It is hoped that the building work will start in 2024 and be finished the following year.

NIVEKO Visit Ensures A Better Understanding For HTP Group’s Retailers

Collaboration between one-piece pool manufacturer NIVEKO and its distributor HTP Group, has moved to another level this year. HTP Group has become a new distribution channel for NIVEKO pools in the UK and its partner network now provides greater potential for coverage of the British market. The priorities for Lewis Salvidge, Managing Director of HTP Group, are straightforward – providing maximum customer satisfaction and top-quality services. NIVEKO pools are exceptional in terms of their wide range of individual configuration options, enabling end customers to perfectly accomplish their vision of the perfect swimming pool. However, to gain a detailed understanding of the NIVEKO concept and all its aspects, it is best to get up close

and personal to see everything that the innovative company offers.

Therefore in August, the HTP Group of UK pool retailers visited the NIVEKO head office in the Czech Republic, where they had the chance to absorb a full training course, including a tour of the production halls. The visit laid a further building block in the collaboration between the two companies, which will become much deeper in the months to come. The current plan is to train other new partners at NIVEKO, plus much more!

Chlorine Gas Prevention Through Detection

Chlorine is an element commonly used to treat swimming pool water. In the small doses required to treat the water, it is generally harmless to bathers, keeping bacteria and microorganisms in check.

However, thoughts of taking a dip in a local pool have been altered for many, with news of chlorine gas clouds, evacuations and pool closures affecting a number of facilities. Several closures have been reported across the UK, most notably the London Aquatic Centre where 200 people were evacuated and 29 people were hospitalised. More recently, there was an incident at a Yorkshire hotel where 16 staff were taken ill with two hospitalised.

The dangers of chlorine gas leaks at pools are well documented – from the importance of safe storage and handling of chemicals, common causes of chlorine gas leaks and what to do in the event of a leak.

As with all dangers, prevention is better than cure.

Leaks are preventable and one easy way to detect and therefore control a potential leak is with a chlorine gas detector. For a relatively low cost pool owners and operators can enjoy peace of mind and exceed their Duty of Care responsibilities to employees and bathers alike.

The initial hazard comes from the plant room and installing an early warning system with sensors

placed in key locations is vital to early detection. Smart chlorine gas detectors not only raise the alarm when chlorine gas is detected at dangerously high levels, but have a range of settings that will alert owners and operators to the smallest leaks. Providing the location of a leak, along with the strength of the chlorine gas, allows pool managers to investigate the issue causing the leak, resolve it and prevent a more serious pool evacuation and closure.

SITE CHOSEN FOR NEW SCOTTISH WELLBEING HUB

Clackmannanshire Councillors have decided that a new Wellbeing Hub for the region will be located at The Pavilion in Alloa. The decision was taken at a recent council meeting and marks a significant step forward in the project’s development.

The Council has committed to invest in a state-of-the-art facility, including a swimming pool. The development is being informed at every stage by the views of the community and stakeholder groups.

Officers, architects and specialist project managers have gone through a detailed process in pulling together essential information to make the decision on the most appropriate site.

Deputy Leader of the Council, Graham Lindsay said: “The Wellbeing Hub is such an exciting project that I know everyone will want to get behind it. It is so important that we no longer look back, but look forward with innovation and real ambition for Clackmannanshire.”

The Wellbeing Hub will be part of a wider network connecting facilities and providers of sport, physical activity and wellbeing programmes across Clackmannanshire.

Waterco’s MultiCyclone A Key Feature At Eco Pool Installation

Surrounded by the rolling Shropshire Hills, the Baron at Bucknell near Ludlow is a traditional free house country inn. When Michael Caffyn-Parsons from Inspired By Water happened to stay there, he struck up a casual conversation with co-owner Phil Wright.

“He asked me what we did and I ended up showing him our brochures and website on swimming ponds, something he had not previously heard of,” Michael recalled.

“As it turns out he was considering a swimming pool as he had permission to build some luxury garden rooms.”

As the region surrounding the Baron at Bucknell is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Phil and his wife Debra liked the idea that guests could swim in a natural system that seamlessly integrated with the rustic landscape.

Working with colleague Tim Gunning, a natural swimming pool engineer, Michael recommended a range of Waterco’s filtration and sanitation products for the Wright’s proposed new outdoor pool.

“Equipment includes an Exotuff 30” Waterco Bead Filter, which is far superior mechanically and biologically to anything else on the market, and

Aquamite 1.25 pumps which are also used to draw water through the reparation area pipework,” he explained.

“The system also includes a MultiCyclone MC 16, which we have fitted with our own automated valve so it can be flushed out by remote control.”

The MultiCyclone is a key feature of the system as it helps remove debris through the process of centrifugal filtration prior to reaching the filter. Furthermore, the addition of the automated valve on the waste ensures that the sediment bowl is cleaned regularly with minimal effort.

The 10m x 5m x 2m swimming pool looks like a natural oasis, where guests swim in pristine water filtered by plants, microorganisms, and Waterco’s superior sanitation products.

Contracts Signed For New Swimming

Facilities In Warwickshire

Contracts have now been exchanged, making way for the creation of two brand-new multi-million pound swimming pools in Kenilworth, Warwickshire

A background of inflation, archaeological investigation and supply chain issues in the construction industry have caused unforeseen delays to the Abbey Fields project, but now following an extended period of re-costing, Warwick District Council has reached an agreement with AR Demolition Ltd to demolish the current facilities and with Kier to construct the new pools and adjoining amenities.

Warwick District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economy and Culture, Councillor Liam Bartlett commented: “Whilst we regret the delay in starting work, it was crucial that we did not compromise on the quality or value for

money to council taxpayers for these new facilities.

I am therefore delighted to report that contracts are now signed, allowing us to provide the district’s residents with two wonderful swimming pools at Abbey Fields, with additional year-round pool space, sun-terrace and café, which is in keeping with its beautiful backdrop.

“It is my intention to offer local taxpayers as much transparency as possible over the revised project costs and will be providing a Council Committee with a comprehensive report at the earliest opportunity.”

The next stage of work will see demolition contractors on site, installing fencing and hoarding. There will also be further archaeological investigations. These investigations will be running at the same time as the demolition.

CCEI’s TILD – A Smart, Easy-towire Control Panel From SCP

Modern swimming pool owners and users

want to have control over the main functions of the plant room equipment via their phone. To do this, what could be easier than installing a standard control panel that is more than it appears on the surface?

Available through SCP UK and new for 2022, CCEI’s TILD (Timer

Intelligent Linked Device) solution is a complete pre-wired control panel that gives users control over filtration according to the water temperature and risk of frost, and allows them to control the LED lighting or programme an auxiliary output intuitively via a smartphone!

With lots of options and capabilities, TILD is also equipped with a heat pump outlet and pre-wired connections for control of the water level and a pool cover.

With TILD, retailer and pool builders can offer customers a control panel that meets their needs, but which is just as easy to install and connect as a standard panel! Features include:

• Programming of equipment on a smartphone with an intuitive and user-friendly application

• Connection to local Wi-Fi device and with Bluetooth®. Extend the Wi-Fi signal to the technical room with a PLC kit

• Automatic modes: filtering according to water temperature and lighting switched on at sunset

• Temperature-controlled filtration runs with automatic calculation displayed in the app

• Direct selection of the light colour (12 colours available and seven sequences).

For weekends, when pools are often used more, the TILD application also has a weekend mode that can be activated and configured via specific settings so that owners can programme longer filtration times and extend lighting times later into the night.

PoolLab 2.0 Photometer – Three Measuring Chambers, Wi-Fi And More!

Germany’s Water-i.d. GmbH, which has successfully produced and distributed the PoolLab 1.0 since 2017, have announced a successor model, the PoolLab 2.0, which will be available from around February 2023.

With this upgraded version, Water-i.d. wants to set new standards and is once again using the latest technology and other innovations.

For example, the PoolLab 2.0 will have not just one but three parallel measuring chambers, so that up to three water values can be measured simultaneously. As with the PoolLab 1.0, the permanently installed triple cuvette can also be exchanged in the PoolLab 2.0 and results obtained after only two keystrokes.

The new model can measure 24 pool water values (versus 13 in the 1.0), including hardness, copper, phosphate and much more in addition to chlorine, active oxygen, pH, alkalinity and cyanuric acid.

In addition to the Bluetooth connection to the free LabCOM app/ software/cloud from the previous generation, the PoolLab 2.0 will also have a Wi-Fi connection in order to be able to communicate instantly with the LabCOM cloud without the need to connect to a smartphone first. This enables immediate synchronisation with the LabCOM cloud, so that the measurement data will be available in ‘real time’ in the app, the software on the PC or tablet or in a browser. In addition, the user can create different water sources (e.g. ‘Pool 1’, ‘Pool 2’) via the app and save them on the PoolLab 2.0 so that the measurement results are always stored and synchronised for the exact account.

PoolLab 2.0 has a large colour display with backlighting for easy operation. Like its predecessor, it will also be IP68 waterproof so that the water to be measured can be scooped directly from the pool into the (replaceable) measuring chamber.

NIVEKO Overflow Pools –Dream Options For Every Need

Save Time, Money And Water With The Waterco MultiCyclone!

The Waterco MultiCyclone is a pre-filtration device that is capable of saving water and reducing filter maintenance. It works based on centrifugal water filtration with no moving parts to wear and tear, and no filter media to clean or replace. Nonetheless, it is backed with a two-year warranty.

Having a pool is the dream for many home owners, however, each person’s dream is different and reflects the unique personality of each house’s residents. Bringing this vision to life is a task NIVEKO take seriously, enjoy doing and excel at.

NIVEKO manufactures pools made from High-Tech Polymer, which is renowned for its high quality, diverse range of colour schemes and durability. In 1995 NIVEKO launched what is known nowadays as the standard skimmer type pool. In 2008 they took a bold step in a different direction when they presented their unique overflow trough developed at NIVEKO. This innovation steered the monopool market into a new era of design. In-depth technological studies and growth resulted in the special Whisper overflow trough design marketed exclusively by NIVEKO, which produces the least amount of noise in overflow pools.

The company’s pool portfolio offers a wide variety of overflow pool types. These are the Multi, Advance, Evolution, Infinity and Underflow. Each individual type represents a special take on pool design, enabling customers to choose the model that really suits them with no restrictions. Moreover, NIVEKO pools are always manufactured on an individual basis precisely in line with the customer’s requirements such as dimensions, colour, stairs and many other optional parts that make them a unique final product.

NIVEKO’s diverse range of overflow models means that anyone and everyone can find the pool of their dreams. From the simple minimalist lines of the Evolution, through to the highly distinctive and eye-catching Advance and Infinity to the multipurpose Multi, with all its diversity of shapes, and finishing with the innovative Underflow – the options are vast and the choice is always purely and simply down to the customer’s preferences. That, above all, is what the NIVEKO corporate philosophy is all about!

Incoming water enters the multiple hydro cyclones tangentially, generating a strong centrifugal effect. Sediment spirals down to the sediment sump, while filtered water flows up through the outlet. MultiCyclones collect 80% of the dirt that clogs a filter before it gets there. It drastically reduces backwashing and filter cartridge maintenance – yet it only takes 15 litres of water to flush the MultiCyclone. Though the MC16 model has been on the market for a while, the clever engineers at Waterco have taken this fantastic unit one step further and developed the MultiCyclone MC12 – a vertically-mounted, all-in-one prefiltration system.

With an ultra-compact design, the MC12 includes all the features and benefits of centrifugal filtration as incorporated in the MC16 model. The difference is that the MC12 contains fewer cyclones, resulting in the unit being able to operate at lower flow rates while still being able to remove sediment from the pool water.

On top of that, an air release valve has now been incorporated into both the MC12 and MC16 MultiCyclones – this not only helps to expel any unwanted air within the system, but also helps in cleaning out the sediment chamber.

Launched at the start of 2022, AstralPool’s new water circulation pump, the Senext XP, a new small-scale, high performance and easyto-maintain solution, suitable for all types of pools and spas.

The Senext XP delivers the power of a big pump on a small scale, and is easily fitted in any type of pool plant room. Its compact design has made it possible to reduce its size by 25% when compared with other pumps intended for the same uses.

This small size does not make it less powerful though and the Senext XP delivers 12% greater hydraulic performance compared with other pumps in its segment. Thanks to the new designs of the hydraulic system and the strainer, better performance and optimum water

flow rates have been achieved.

The ease of installation and maintenance that it delivers are its most outstanding features. The 1 1/2” internal threaded ports or 2 1/4” external threaded ports using 50 mm couplings make the Senext XP pump easy and quick to install. In

addition, it can be retrofitted in existing pools using the retrofit kit included that comes with an additional base and a 1 1/2” reducer coupling. It also comes with a new built-in handle that makes it extremely easy to both carry and locate.

In coming up with ways on how to improve other features, such as the pump’s maintenance and cleaning, AstralPool added three new improvements to its design. A prefilter cap that can be opened without using any type of tool; an extra-large pre-filter basket with a capacity of 2 litres for reducing the frequency it has to be emptied; and a double water drainage for hibernation.

Wood-fired Bathing Is Making A Comeback

With products inspired by Japanese bathing culture and immersive outdoor experiences, Canadian company Goodland has seen a surge in demand for authentic bathing and connections with nature.

As a new brand dedicated to creating outdoor living products, Goodland has exceeded the sales predictions for its first offering – a Wood Burning Hot Tub – by a mile, and shipped hundreds of tubs far and wide, demonstrating growing interest in slowliving and wood-fired bathing culture. Interest hugely exceeded expectations – showing the need for outdoor objects that are simultaneously beautiful, connect us to nature, and designed with the planet in mind. Beyond simply a product, the Goodland tub is genuinely experiential – it’s a moment to pause, not just a hot tub.

The Wood Burning Hot Tub is only the first in a series of upcoming products, each designed to promote everyday rituals and the simple act of slowing down outdoors.

The soaking tub is made entirely from recyclable materials – like aluminium, western red cedar, and oak – and is crafted in Canada. The Wood Burning Hot Tub is an inviting way to enjoy outdoor space when the weather gets colder, too, and can even be used as a cold plunge when temperatures rise up.

From the ritual of slowly making a cup of coffee in the morning to disconnecting from devices, Goodland is part of a growing movement that celebrates the beauty of slowness, rather than grasping at instant gratification. In an era where technology is part of virtually every experience, Goodland encourages analog moments. Intentional design is also paramount.

Dröm UK Celebrate 20 Years Of Wellness

Specialist wellness company Dröm UK is celebrating 20 years in business this year. The Surrey-based business was formed in 2002 by Kicki Carlsson and Barry Smith when surprised by the lack of thermal bathing facilities available outside of spas and gyms in the UK, they decided to start selling prefabricated saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs to enable more people to enjoy the benefits of wellbeing in their own homes. Fast forward 20 years and now Dröm UK is one of the world leaders in the design and build of luxury, bespoke thermal wellbeing rooms, with a unique showroom in Byfleet and high end projects and clients across the world.

Originally called Dream Leisure, Swedish-born Kicki believed a shorter name would work better as a brand and had always wanted to be able to use a word from her homeland, so the name was changed to Dröm, which means dream in Swedish.

Originally just selling prefabricated saunas and steam rooms (from the Swedish manufacturer Tylö) alongside hot tubs and swim spas, the company’s showroom had a major overhaul in 2012 to showcase various, more bespoke roomsets and wellness areas to

demonstrate how the products could be adapted to traditional or contemporary environments and could be custom made to fit the space available.

The company’s staff are key to the success of the business – from a team of talented craftsmen and engineers to the hardworking office crew, Dröm staff have always played an important part in the day to day running of the company. Even company vans are considered part of the Dröm family and most are named after the staff! Look out for them in and around the London and South East area.

The high-quality, timber sauna manufacturer aims to provide an experience that is at one with nature and an outdoor lifestyle, with the therapeutic use of heat helping to improve health and wellbeing.

Its products are sought after nationwide, and alongside customer demands for a durable and attractive finish, there is now an expectation that the timber used will be sourced responsibly, with a low environmental impact.

To help meet the exacting standards of its clients, Heartwood turned to International Timber. Western Red Cedar was specified as it is a naturally durable product, which creates an aesthetic appearance, and is kilned to the manufacturer’s specific requests.

Ideal for interior and exterior cladding, the timber is resistant to decay and insect attack and seasons to an attractive silver grey appearance. It is also an excellent material for thermal insulation, preventing the heat from escaping.

Lay-Z-Spa

Western Red Cedar carries PEFC and CSA accreditation, providing Heartwood Saunas with the assurance that the product has been sourced responsibly.

Oliver Davey, Founder and Director of Heartwood Saunas, said: “The specialist services for kilning and bespoke profiles were ideal for my project requirements. I’m particularly pleased with the stunning natural aesthetics that the timber has brought to our range of saunas.”

Bernie Roberts, National Product Manager – Cladding Solutions, said: “From the first call it was clear that Oliver knew what he needed to supply the appropriate quality to his customers. We listened to his requirements and provided a solution. Having our own in-house kilns helps with customers’ specific moisture requirements and this has been invaluable in delivering this project.”

Brand New 3D AR Experience For Platinum Spas

Platinum Spas is proud to announce their latest venture into 3D AR

Reality) with a hot tub experience

is available on their website.

This latest feature

enable customers not only to be able to have a 360 view of the Premium ranges Tokyo hot tub, but also view this model in their own space – and the process is really simple. This technology will allow customers to make an informed decision on whether the hot tub is the right choice for them.

The introduction of the 3D AR means people can now view the Tokyo hot tub from the comfort of their home before actually making any trip to a Platinum Spas retailer.

Sarah Elphick, Head of Marketing said: “It will also be a great benefit to our partner network as it will enable them to demonstrate this product to a customer even if they do not currently have that particular model in stock.

“One of the benefits of AR is that it increases engagement and interaction whilst also providing a richer user experience. We are continuing to innovate and focus on what our consumers want. This is just one of many steps we are taking to take our marketing to the next level.”

Another benefit of this new technology is that it enables users to scan, place and view the hot tub at 100% of its actual size by simply scanning a QR code on a smartphone camera and then they’ll be free to roam and inspect the hot tub. This will allow customers and partners to see whether or not the hot tub would fit into a showroom, garden room, garden space or wherever it is needed.

T&A Announce Acquisition Of Covrex And Walter Piscine Brands

Technics & Applications (T&A), a major player in the pool cover market, is continuing its growth momentum and recently announced it had acquired the Covrex and Walter Piscine brands, both of which are available in the UK through Fairlocks Pool Products.

Walter Piscine and Covrex, formerly part of the familyowned company TSPH (The Swimming Pool Hub), will strengthen the European presence of T&A and expand its product range.

Covrex, the manufacturer of automatic pool covers, has built up a solid reputation since 2004 thanks to its flagship product: the insulating foam filled slat, patented and marketed under the name Covrex Classic.

Founded in 1992 by Lucien Walter, Alsacebased Walter Piscine manufactuers a wide range of swimming pool covers (movable decks, bar safety covers, winter covers, etc.) and these products will help to expand the T&A range.

T&A has established a leading position in the swimming pool cover market thanks to its

technical expertise, high-quality products and efficient after-sales service. These same concepts will also be the key pillars for the further development of the company in its cooperation with Covrex and Walter Piscine customers.

LPW Pools, which was also part of the TSPH group, will not join T&A.

As part of the transaction, the employees and management of both Covrex and Walter Piscine will join the T&A team under the leadership of Joeri Dils, Managing Director of T&A and President of the Belgian Federation of Swimming Pool and Wellness Professionals. Speaking about the acquisition, he said: “We look forward to working with Walter Piscine and Covrex customers to offer them a more complete product range, with the quality and service we have been known for over the past three decades.”

Waterco Dominates At Australian Industry Award Ceremonies

Water treatment manufacturer and distributor Waterco has dominated this year’s industry awards in Australia, securing eight different accolades – two from the Master Pool Builders Association of Australia (MPBAA) and six from various state entities of the Swimming Pool & Spa Associations (SPASA).

The wide-range of awards received has highlighted Waterco’s technological, manufacturing and education prowess.

“The SPASA Awards of Excellence are the swimming pool and spa industry’s most prestigious awards, attracting entries from every region in Australia and showcasing achievements in construction, design, manufacturing, supply, products, retail and service,” says SPASA Australia CEO, Lindsay McGrath.

“The annual awards acknowledge the best, boldest and most creative in the swimming pool and spa industry. Regional winners from across the country compete for Australia’s top prize of national winner in each category: the ultimate recognition as leaders in their field.

Oxiswim, a revolutionary breakthrough in water treatment technology, won the 2022 Australian Product of the Year at the highly coveted industry awards.

Energy

Swimming pools, spas, saunas and other wet leisure products and sectors have become an integral part of everyday social life and the pandemic further highlighted the importance of sport, health and social interaction.

However, the pandemic placed a severe strain on the industry and companies all over the country were affected by closures for many months. Due to the current energy crisis, the industry is now faced with major challenges once again. The topics of energy efficiency and sustainability will therefore be right at the top of the agenda during interbad which takes place 25-28 October in Stuttgart.

The exhibition, along with its exhibitors aim to show swimming pools, saunas and spas need not be ‘energy guzzlers’ and will present innovative products and smart technology, and exchange experiences and opinions about current trends.

“The combination of a trade fair, a Congress and an attractive accompanying programme will provide all exhibitors and

water sanitiser has alluded the industry for decades, which is what makes Oxiswim a gamechanger,” said MPBAA CEO Chris Samartzis. “Consumers now have a choice thanks to Waterco, which is championing sustainability and social responsibility by investing in products like this.”

Samartzis says winning Australian Product of the Year shows Waterco to be a beacon of innovation.

“This nationally acclaimed Award puts Waterco on a pedestal for chasing healthy water and energy efficiencies that make a difference in the community,” he said.

Fluidra Establishes International Pool Pro Day

Last month, Fluidra announced the creation of an international day through the National Day Archives to honour and celebrate pool professionals worldwide for their tremendous hard work and dedication. Fluidra International Pool Pro Day will be celebrated on 7 September each year to show appreciation to pool professionals for their countless hours to deliver endless memories and enjoyment to pool owners.

And Sustainability

visitors with a unique platform to discuss the highly relevant topics at present,” said Joachim Sauter, Division Director Trade Fairs and Events at Messe Stuttgart. With a new sustainable logo, interbad will focus even more strongly on sustainability in visual terms for the first time. The logo already identifies resource-conserving products in the Exhibitor Directory and acts as a guide for trade visitors on the trade fair grounds.

Regardless of what sector of the business, pool professionals are experts in their field who allow for pool owners to thoroughly enjoy their pools each summer. Service technicians spend endless hours ensuring all equipment is properly functioning, balancing pool water chemistry for proper sanitisation and ridding the pool of troublesome debris while taking care of any necessary repairs to keep pools safe, operational and efficient. Retailers play a pivotal role in guiding important customer purchasing decisions – such as finding the appropriate automatic pool cleaner or energy-efficient equipment options – as well as providing a valuable resource for maintenance information. Pool builders help homeowners bring their ideal outdoor sustainable oasis to life from start to finish by designing their dream pools, installing the best eco-friendly equipment for their design and constructing the pool from the ground up.

For all of these reasons, and more, Fluidra saw it was only fitting that these industry professionals be recognised for their dedication to their customers during a grueling pool season.

Pool pros, pool owners and anyone who has ever enjoyed a pool can join in on the celebration by thanking a pool pro or sharing on social media using the hashtag

This mode uses 100% of the heat pump's power to quickly heat the water to desired temperature.

This mode uses 50 to 75% of the pump's capabilities, guaranteeing silence, energy savings and performance.

The heat pump adjusts its strength from 50 to 100% depending on requirements, while limiting energy consumption.

Thanks to its smaller footprint, the unit requires half the space of standard heat pumps. Combined with its reduced exhaust size, it can be placed in the smallest spaces without compromising on power.

Providing A Voice And More For Our Industry

What a contrasting year it continues to be, from the hugely positive news from another great summer of sporting success (congratulations to all of the participants and medal winners) through to the number of serious challenges facing our industry (and wider society) from issues such as hosepipe bans, energy price rises and economic uncertainty.

Whatever the challenges, it is important to have a voice with the relevant bodies or groups, and there has been a lot of hard work behind the scenes from the various committees and chairs, and the Andover team to have the views of our industry represented. Examples include working with The Tile Association (TTA) on updating their tiling in swimming pools guidance and helping to revise the swimming pool-related materials for The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineers (CIPHE).

An initial meeting has also been held with Water UK and relevant water companies to address some issues that have arisen from the introduction of hosepipe bans that have brought hot tubs into the scope of the ban. The ban prohibits filling or topping up using a hosepipe or fixed plumbing such as an auto top-up. BISHTA’s concern is that hot tubs are not currently in the scope of the Water Industry Code of Practice. This has understandably caused some confusion for

hot tub owners and retailers as they try to get to grips with which water companies are including hot tubs in their ban and which are not. Southern Water and South East Water are following the guidance in the water industry’s Code of Practice and NOT including hot tubs in their hosepipe ban. The other four water companies have included them in their respective hosepipe bans (South West Water, Thames Water, Yorkshire Water and Welsh Water). Discussions continue on how to ensure consistency while dealing with the lack of available water due to very low rainfall, while the water companies continue to tackle the various leaks from the ageing infrastructure. Updates are being posted on the BISHTA and SPATA websites, so look out for this news.

This time of year, BISHTA and SPATA members are gearing up to enter the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards, so to be in with a chance of winning, please get your entries in by Friday 28 October. The winners will be announced at the Industry Gala Dinner, at the Coventry Building Society Arena, on Tuesday 31 January 2023. Please remember that attendance at the event is open to the whole industry!

BISHTA and SPATA members who have been shortlisted for the 2022 EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards will find out the winners when they are announced at Global Piscine Europe in Lyon, France, on Tuesday 15 November.

BISHTA and SPATA continue to offer their respective industry qualifications/courses. Coming up before the end of the year, there will be a Sauna & Steam course on 25 October at Golden Coast in Devon. There

is a Liner course on 1 November at Certikin, in Oxfordshire, and a Heat Pump course is scheduled for 11 November, which will be online (via WebEx). Dates are also expected for further Environmental Control & Ductwork courses being run by AstralPool UK and Heatstar. It is still hoped to organise a fasttrack Pool Plant Operations (PPO) course with the STA, for experienced staff in the pool industry, but this will be subject to demand. BISHTA will continue to offer a range of courses on Water Hygiene Management, Dangerous Goods, and more Safe Hot Tub Handling courses. Qualifications for Electrical Final Connections of Hot Tubs (with NICEIC) and the Certified Hot Tub Technician (CHTT) are also expected to be delivered before Christmas (and certainly before Easter).

On Monday 14 November, Global Piscine Europe will be the venue for WAPSA’s sixth annual meeting, and this will be an opportunity to learn from other associations about how they represent their members.

And finally, please see an extremely topical article on the following pages from Richard Carrington on the subject of heat pumps, and there is also an update on page 31 about the importance of ensuring that chemicals are sold responsibly to minimise the risk of terrorists getting hold of materials for making bombs.

Wishing you a successful autumn and winter season.

This article aims to convey issues that are likely to become ever more critical for heat pump installers and suppliers as the UK reduces its fossil fuel emissions; part of its plans to create a carbon-neutral society.

It is widely recognised that electricity provided by renewable technology is, in part, a means of meeting this objective. This is achieved by replacing fossil fuel boilers with electrically driven equipment such as heat pumps and replacing petrol/diesel/LPG powered vehicles with electrically driven alternatives.

Clearly, this will increase demand on the electricity network, which the Energy Networks Association (ENA) need to address, and requires changes to local authority planning regulations to recognise the changing way homes are heated.

This article defines heat pumps as electrically driven appliances that contain a refrigeration circuit using a compressor. They may be used for air/water heating/ cooling and dehumidification. Both air source and ground source heat pumps are covered under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) detailed later in this article, but please note that ground source heat pumps and dehumidifiers are not in the scope of the General Permitted Development Order (GPDO), which is also explained in more detail in this article.

WHAT LEGISLATION IS APPLICABLE FOR HEAT PUMPS?

There are at least four relevant areas of legislation to review. The first piece of legislation is The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (Amendment) (No. 2) (England) Order, more commonly known as the General Permitted Development Order (GPDO), which allows Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) to determine if domestic pools in back gardens are permitted development, or whether they require planning permission. Within the GPDO, domestic outdoor swimming pools have been given permitted development under Class E (which typically has included fossil fuel heat sources for the pool), so long as they meet the various stipulations (such as not being in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, etc.). In the GPDO, the use of a heat pump is included under Class G, but as the LPA may not be aware that the swimming pool is to have a heat pump fitted, although the pool itself may not require planning permission, it is very likely that the heat pump should.

In relation to heat pumps, the GPDO (Class G) requires some key factors to be in place for permitted development, including:

• Only one heat pump (or other renewable heat source) has permitted development within the boundary of a dwelling.

• The heat pump size to be used must not exceed 0.6m3 in volume.

• The heat pump has to be installed at least 1m from the boundary of a neighbouring dwelling (but in reality, after a noise calculation is undertaken, this may have to be many metres from the boundary, where there are habitable spaces). Typically, habitable spaces are in the home, but they may include outside seating areas in the garden. When the heat pump is installed in a space facing the highway in front of a property, it must be at ground level.

Heat pumps that provide heating and cooling are excluded from permitted development, so they will always require planning permission.

Several properties are excluded from permitted development, including listed buildings and historical monuments, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, etc. It is worth checking with the LPA to ensure there will be no issues during a project if there is any doubt about permitted development.

As the GPDO references the MCS, this ordinarily requires heat pumps to be installed by MCS-3005 accredited installers and the product to be MCS-007 approved. SPATA has successfully received written confirmation from the MCS that swimming pool heat pump installations fall outside the scope of MCS, and so installers do not have to be MCS-3005 accredited. However, SPATA would strongly urge installers to attend the swimming pool heat pump course run for the benefit of the industry, to learn about the relevant information provided by the MCS to avoid planning issues. SPATA remains in dialogue with the MCS about the most appropriate requirements for the heat pumps themselves, as SPATA is not aware of any swimming pool heat pump that is MCS-007 accredited.

The second piece of legislation relates to the heat pump being installed in compliance with the Energy Networks Association (ENA) requirements, which is for the customer to action under the Distribution Code (or D Code). For each pool project installing a heat pump, there must be an ENA form completed, with details of the location and type of heat pump. If the heat pump is on the ENA list, it is a much simpler process, but where it is not, then the installer needs to work with the heat pump manufacturer to provide the relevant information to complete the form.

Therefore, it follows that there is a growing need for manufacturers of heat pumps and installers to prove that their products meet the relevant British standards for flicker and harmonics testing and that installers fully understand how electrical supplies should be assessed prior to installing new equipment. The flicker and harmonics testing help to ensure there are no quality issues

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY 28 August 2020 SPN www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk
SPATA is grateful for the expertise of its members that sit on the Technical Committee and is thankful for the guidance of Richard Carrington regarding this article on addressing the issues of heat pump installations as the UK works towards a more carbon-neutral future

for consumers, such as flickering lights or adverse effects on power transmission and power generating equipment.

The third piece of legislation relates to flammable refrigerant gases covered under the F-Gas Regulations, as most heat pumps currently (and dehumidifiers will in future) contain flammable gases, which would place them in the scope of this Regulation. This legislation requires a risk assessment to be carried out for heat pumps and dehumidifiers installed within a building, which would include a plant room.

The fourth piece of legislation relates to the storage and transportation of Dangerous Goods, as equipment with flammable F-gases is covered under the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations (CDG) 2009. Industry training courses are available on Dangerous Goods, so make sure your staff are suitably trained, to avoid possible fines.

WHAT DO MANUFACTURERS AND/ OR IMPORTERS NEED TO DO?

Manufacturers and/or importers need to:

• Make available product testing data results to support the relevant BS EN standards they comply with depending on the heat pump size, which for harmonics is BS EN 61000-32 or -312 and for flicker, it is 61000-33 or -311. Additionally, manufacturers need to provide the power requirements, including starting amps of their equipment.

• Make available their sound power data (not sound pressure) in order for installers to perform the noise calculation test required by MCS-020 (covered later in this article).

• Seek to have their products included on the ENA list, as this aids the installers in completing the ENA form mentioned above.

• Where applicable, manufacturers liaise with their distributors to ensure they have all the relevant information to pass to their trade customers installing the heat pumps.

• Ensure they comply with the UK F-Gas quota legislation that has replaced the EU version post-BREXIT

WHAT DO INSTALLERS NEED TO DO?

Installers need to be aware of:

• The GPDO and MCS requirements outlined above

• Know how to undertake (or who to ask) a noise calculation in accordance with the GPDO requirements

• They will need to be familiar with completing the ENA form

• F-Gas regulations regarding the use of global warming refrigerants

• Dangerous Goods transportation and storage requirements as most modern heat pumps contain flammable substances

• Ideally, they will have attended (or are being booked onto) the heat pump course mentioned.

WHAT MORE IS SPATA DOING?

SPATA is keen to inform and educate its members and the wider industry with the information contained in this article.

We continue our dialogue with MCS about their installer and product standards with a view to giving feedback on any changes to the GPDO.

Following dialogue with the Heat Pump Federation, dialogue is planned with the ENA in 2023 to better understand how we can help them help our industry.

SPATA’s Technical Committee continues to produce member factsheets on heat pumps, F-Gas regulations and in excess of 120 other topics. This material is included within the Members’ Hub on the SPATA website.

HOW CAN I LEARN MORE?

As previously mentioned in this article, SPATA can offer a heat pump course and to ensure it can go ahead, despite the uncertainties of COVID, it is a 4-hour online module. The cost is only £25+VAT for SPATA members and £35+VAT for all other attendees.

It covers the basics of heat pumps and how they work, whether planning permission is required, the requirements of the heat pump, and what installers are required to do. A worked example of how to undertake a noise calculation to MCS 020 is provided. Common mistakes when installing heat pumps are covered to try and minimise these types of incidents happening in the future.

To assess the knowledge gained on the course, an open book test has to be successfully completed with a pass mark of at least 80%. The course provides four CPD points for attendees.

Contact the SPATA office via admin@spata. co.uk to book a course or add your name to the waiting list.

Playing A Part In Selling Chemicals Responsibly

PLEASE

TO SELL

AND

SPATA and BISHTA have been working with colleagues from the police, seconded to the Home Office, who have been helping associations in various industries to raise awareness of the need to be vigilant when selling chemicals, especially to end-users, to minimise threats from terrorists. This article gives some hints and tips about what key messages have been learned for the pool and hot tub industry, and it promotes the need to be aware of potential issues to keep the threat of terrorism as low as possible.

SELLING CHEMICALS

When selling chemicals, do you always consider if any offences have been committed under the Poisons Act 1972?

Have you ever asked yourself these three questions?

• Is this product you are selling a regulated or reportable substance?

• If so, do you view this sale as suspicious?

• Do you know how to report suspicious activity?

The swimming pool, spa and hot tub sectors have a vital role in this process. The industry provides access to chemicals for owners of these products across the UK, both on the high street and online, and some of these chemicals will fall within the Poisons Act legislation as explosive precursors, and as such, they can be synthesised into homemade explosive devices.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Firstly, our industry

PLEASE HELP US TO SELL CHEMICALS LEGALLY AND RESPONSIBLY

prides itself on being the subject matter experts. With this knowledge, it is more likely that we can already recognise when the products selected don’t quite match what is typically purchased, or we understand when product combinations and quantities seem unusual. You already engage with customers to understand their needs and ensure that the products and chemicals are safe and suitable. This is the perfect opportunity to explore the products further with the customer. It need not be more than your usual sales interaction, but unconsciously you are gaining the information to process if the transaction details make sense.

If you sell any ‘regulated’ chemical, which most likely would be Sulphuric Acid or Hydrogen Peroxide, there are additional legal obligations on top of the suspicious transaction reporting that must be undertaken before any sale:

• To assist you with selling chemicals responsibly, the Home Office has launched a video to raise awareness. This will be very useful to show staff as part of their training, to make them aware of what is legally required and will have more clues as to what to look out for.

• If staff believe they have some suspicious activity to report, this can now be completed directly online.

Find links to the above resource and more on this topic by visiting the blogs available on the SPATA and BISHTA websites.

DANGEROUS GOODS

Not only has the industry been looking at reducing the risk of terrorist threats, but it has also been working on critical messages regarding Dangerous Goods training, as there

are many chemical substances (with a UN number) that are classified as Dangerous Goods, which are illegal to send by Royal Mail or some other carriers that are not registered for transporting Dangerous Goods. To learn more about the messages, industry training is available from Howard Gosling at Pool and Spa Advice on this important subject. The training is open to anyone in the industry, so for details of cost, date and venues, please email howard@poolandspaadvice.co.uk

A SAFER FUTURE FOR ALL

Both SPATA and BISHTA have been benefitting from the hard work of their respective Technical Committees in producing member factsheets on a range of related topics such as Explosive Precursors Regulations (M74), Chemical Labelling (M98) and Biocidal Products Regulations (M73). The number in brackets refers to the factsheet number.

The safety of users is only as good as the supply chain, so SPATA and BISHTA have been working with the industry to draft a Pool and Spa Code for Selling Chemicals responsibly. The 7-point Code is being circulated to responsible pool and hot tub companies for their feedback.

If you have additional questions or concerns about the sale of pool, spa and / or hot tub chemicals, please feel free to contact the Home Office team at

Shining A Light On Energy Efficiency In The Pool Hall

In this issue, Ruth Prophet, a duty officer at the University of Stirling Sport, STA pool plant tutor and STA brand ambassador looks at pool hall lighting efficiency and explains the measures taken at the facility to reduce costs and CO2 emissions

Upgrading the lighting on the poolside at the University of Stirling Sport (UoSS) had been right at the top of my wish list from the first day I started working there. For me, the need to have better lighting wasn’t just an additional extra but an essential to our operations.

Lighting impacts everything we do. Not only is it a key factor to the health and safety of swimmers, allowing lifeguards to have a clear view of the full pool tank; but as a performance sports facility for elite athletes, we often have a need to utilise underwater cameras for athlete assessment purposes and so the need to have sufficient lighting below the surface of the water was an added factor.

The energy usage and cost implications involved with lighting a pool hall is huge. For our facility, the swimming pool is open from 06:00 until 22:00 and so the lighting could be burning for up to 16 hours per day.

Historically, swimming pools use more energy per m² than any other building type (up to 5 times as much as an office building). With the current financial climate, and the ever-rising cost of electricity and gas, the amount of energy being consumed will be

a critical consideration for many businesses for the financial viability of running a swimming pool. While we can look to reduce our energy and electricity usage through control measures, by switching equipment and lighting off when we don’t need them, this will have limited impact within our business needs.

One of our only other options then, was to upgrade what we already had with more energy efficient options and, in the case of lighting, opt for lighting solutions with better colour performance.

At UoSS we opted to replace the existing lamps with new bright white LEDs. Not only did we replace and upgrade the ones that were already in place, but we also increased our capacity by completing major electrical works allowing us to double the number of lamps we had. Previously we only had lighting down one side of the swimming pool, but after completion of the project we had lighting running down both sides.

With the previous lighting at UoSS, we projected that we would produce 292 tonnes of CO2 over the next five years. With energy prices being what they were at the start of 2022 we

expected this to cost in the region of £81,000.

With the lighting upgrade having taken place, we have now calculated that over the next 5 years our CO2 emissions will decrease to 122 tonnes (a saving of nearly 170 tonnes when compared to the previous lighting). We also estimate that the cost of running the new lights will reduce to just £33,700 which is a significant cost saving.

As well as the running costs and emissions being greatly reduced, it is also prudent to take into consideration the cost of ongoing maintenance. The older bulbs required regular replacements and, in my experience, were prone to faults that we frequently had electricians out to fix and get back online. We had factored this in with our cost projections and estimated this would cost around £2,800 in replacement bulbs and maintenance over the next five years.

Taking all things into account, after the initial install of the lights and the upfront costs involved, the payback period was calculated to be 92 months, around 7.5 years. This was prior to the recent fluctuation in energy costs and so we may see a shift in these numbers over the next months and years.

The next stage of our plans is to fit a series of mirrors and reflectors (secondary reflector system), which will increase the luminosity and effectiveness of our new lights – and allow us to show off our world class facilities in the best possible light!

A New Captain At The Certikin Tiller

With a steady pair of hands, Neil Stephenson has settled in well in his first three months at the Certikin helm. Neil, who has been with the company for over 23 years, is dedicated to ensuring that customers continue to receive the highest level of service, technical back-up, and an unparalleled range of premier quality products, befitting of the UK’s water leisure market leader.

Q. How did you become involved with Certikin?

A. After graduating from University, I worked in DIY store management but decided a life in retail wasn’t compatible with a young family. My then wife worked at Certikin and she put in a good word for me with the team, including Patrick Thorpe and Neil Murray, and before I knew it…

Q. How did your career progress at Certikin?

A. I joined in 1999 and have held positions in stock control, health and safety, service management and the purchasing department at the Witney HQ. In 2002, I joined Certikin’s Executive team and was made General Manager of what was to become Certikin North – this meant a relocation to the Leeds area. At the time, Certikin had purchased the assets of Aire Bank Covers and I was tasked with introducing linings and growing the overall division. I managed Certikin North until 2017 when I was appointed Certikin’s Product Development Manager, overseeing new product initiatives and compliance, marketing and liaising with the BSPF.

Q. Biggest career achievement to date?

A. Naturally, being appointed Certikin’s Managing Director is my biggest achievement, something I am extremely proud of and an opportunity I am honoured

to have been given. Previous to this I would say the time managing Certikin North – I gained valuable experience in running and developing a small but successful satellite business with the help of a fantastic team.

Q. How does your new role compare with your previous at Certikin?

A. The biggest difference is the volume and variety of work and being involved, one way or another, in every aspect of the business on a day-to-day basis. It’s exhilarating, fascinating, challenging, eye-opening and extremely satisfying, all at the same time.

Q. How has Certikin’s new HQ benefited/ transformed operations?

A. There are numerous ways in which our new premises have vastly improved and simplified our everyday operation to meet the needs of our growing business. We had seriously outgrown our old premises and the new building has afforded us the ability to greatly enhance our customer service. We can store, handle and despatch more products more efficiently; our production spaces are less congested; we now boast attractive meeting/training rooms – the list is endless. I am delighted to say that the new premises have had a really cohesive and positive impact within the team. We are in the best shape possible to go forward and mark the company’s 60th anniversary next year.

Q. Will your appointment usher in any new practices or policies?

A. There will be, and there already have been, changes – but these are related to my own way of running a business and to responding to external and market forces, as opposed to any fundamental changes to what Certikin represents or provides as a business.

Q. What’s next for Certikin and what challenges are on the horizon?

A. The focus is on continual improvement at all levels and, of course, this will take time.

There are multiple challenges at present, faced by everyone. The current challenge is to steer a steady course within what is a very turbulent environment for businesses and consumers: dealing with supply chain issues and cost variations; resource limitations (including labour); economic variances and uncertainty as well as the fallout from Brexit which is still having a big impact on all of us.

Despite this, however, it seems completely logical that the overall demand for water leisure, in all its forms, will remain a constant – so, if we are all resolved in dealing with the many challenges, the opportunities will outweigh these challenges.

Q. Trends you think will happen?

A. I think the adoption of newer technologies will become more prominent in our industry – not only within the products themselves to aid in running and maintaining pools and spas, but in the way they are produced. Linked with this will be the need, and responsibility that we all face, to continue to adapt to, accommodate and support, the needs of the environment, including the management of water as a resource.

No Job Too Big OrSmall For Plastica’s Commercial Covers

Over the years Plastica has built a reputation for delivering quality, well-made products – none less so than their commercial covers and reel systems. Sandford Parks Lido can lay testament to that, with Plastica’s involvement with the successful outdoor pool spanning 20 or more years.

In that time, the company have replaced the three main swimming pool covers at least three or four times, and that’s not because of any failing on Plastica’s part – the conditions the covers endure at this site are extreme to say the least! A popular outdoor pool, well used and frequented by many swimmers from March through to October, mean that the cover and reel system is put through its paces daily seven months of the year.

Originally opened in 1935, Sandford Parks Lido is a Grade II Listed heated outdoor swimming pool. The facility consists of a 50 x 27 metre main pool, a children’s pool, and paddling pool. The main pool is heated to 26°C and children’s pool to 30°C.

The site was re-surveyed in 2017 when

they drained the pools and undertook a minor refurbishment. Back in February this year, Plastica made three new 5mm polyolefin closed cell foam Supercovers (available in blue or grey) of approximately 50 x 8.9 metres. Fitted with a commercial leading edge, reinforcing reel end and wind wires, each cover takes about a day and a half to make and takes up a large portion of the company’s shop floor. The reels on site are three slatted bench reels with gearboxes that Plastica made and installed over 20 years ago.

Now more than ever, most establishments are looking for new ways to save on energy costs, reduce their carbon footprint and minimise impact on climate change. It is now widely accepted that installing a heat retention

cover is the single most effective means of reducing swimming pool energy consumption. Fit the right cover on a pool and owners will see a reduction in energy bills of an average 23% per annum (figures based on actual independent live trials). Typical payback on customer systems is just 12 months.

Plastica have had some great feedback from the management team at Sandford, who are pleased with the results yet again:

“Plastica has provided us with excellent service from start to finish and the money these covers save us on heating and gas, especially in the current climate, is what enables us to provide a heated pool for our customers for seven months of the year. The installation was completed smoothly and effectively over two days and we have been left with three excellent and smart looking covers. All our staff have commented on how easy the covers now are to pull on and off the pool which makes the early morning pool set up much easier for the lifeguards.”

Aquatic Play In The Capital

Designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects, Hackney’s new Britannia Leisure Centre is a state-of-the-art leisure centre built by main contractor Morgan Sindall Construction for the London Borough of Hackney.

Run on behalf of the Council by leisure operator GLL, this stunning and award-winning facility opened its doors to the public last year and received over 10,000 visitors in its first week of opening!

Set over four storeys, it has a wide range of sporting and leisure facilities, and when it comes to wet leisure options, the centre really does have plenty. It features an impressive six-lane 25m main pool

with access to a steam room and sauna, plus a 20 metre training pool with movable floor and sensory lighting installation. There’s also a splash aqua park for children and families to enjoy, equipped with numerous water features and a 15 metre high water flume.

Specialist waterplay companies Ustigate and Vortex were delighted to assist in designing and installing their 21st century aquatic play on the ground floor.

The scheme is bright and colourful. There are play items in a shallow water depth to encourage water confidence and play items provided in an area without any water depth making it inclusive and accessible for everyone to enjoy. There is a pool, perfect for first time swimming lessons and a row of Rooster Tails that offer stimulating splashes at the deeper end of the flume pool.

Aquatic activities include climbing, sliding, twisting, turning, spinning and splashing! The Elevations™ are provided with sturdy steps and handrails with robust, translucent panels so parents and guardians can keep an eye on their young ones as they board and ride. There are eight, interactive water features on board incorporating cascade funnels, geysers, overhead Seeflow™ flowers, a water wall, spray bar and a large tipping bucket called Supersplash. of aiming and firing fun!

The toddler pool is an aquatic play paradise for Britannia’s youngest water enthusiasts, and features low level products with gentle sprays and engaging technologies that enable children to interact closely with the products.

In fact, it’s safe to say that there’s plenty of playability in the toddler pool. At the southern end, children will find a smiley Cascade No.1 with its water channels, funnels and weirs inviting young ones to explore and discover the wonders of water flow. This is a nice play item because a number of children can gather round and enjoy the activities together. There is a Luna No. 1 with Twistnozzle™ technology providing children with the ability to twist and turn the nozzles to redirect the water streams and a Tot Twister with a north spraying spout that children can turn a full circle. The toddler pool is a happy place to be with aquatic friends Frog No.1 and Snail No.4 in the mix. Both Frog and Snail have differing water effects and Turntec™ technology enabling a 360° spin. There is also a cheerful Sunrise waterslide made from Seeflow™ and an overflowing Bobble No.1 with a self-spinning orb inviting children to play with water. The lowest of the water features are the Water Jellys and arched ground sprays that are dotted around the pool. Britannia Leisure Centre offers a favourite for every age and ability.

Premium Hot Tubs For The Ultimate Experience

The premium end of the hot tub market has always been a tough, yet rewarding battleground for both retailers and manufacturers, especially with so many cheaper models and brands on the market. However the last couple of years have been somewhat different. With COVID came uncertainty. First there was market fear, then the good times really rolled for pretty much anything and everything hot tubs – from the cheapest to the most expensive – the market went crazy, and now… well it’s been a challenging year for the sector. Everyone knows the issues, so there’s little point dwelling on them but the high-end of the sector, being smaller and somewhat protected from these more challenging times due to the profile of the people purchasing them, as ever pushes forward.

To be honest, they have to. As rangetoppers, high-end hot tub models provide the opportunity to fully showcase a brand’s design capabilities, imagination, quality and much more to potential customers. In short, they’re a brand’s flag-bearers, benchmarks if you will, and that makes them important for reputations as they will have a bearing on a customers’ perception of cheaper models within ranges too – something that is likely to be key in the months ahead and first impressions of any brand, rightly or wrongly, count.

With budgets often well into five figure territory for these models, any customer looking to invest in this sector quite rightly demands the best quality and latest in features and innovations combined with a sense of style – plus of course, a feeling of exclusivity.

So with a lot to live up to, we take a look at just some of the premium products that are available.

OPTIONS ARE INCLUDED AS STANDARD WITH BE WELL EXECUTIVE MODELS

Available through the team at Superior Wellness, Canadian spa manufacturer Be Well has produced a high quality product that is designed to withstand the world’s toughest

climates. Built with a very heavy duty frame, a thick pan base and utilising a perimeter heatlock insulation process, Be Well truly reflects quality.

The Executive range is the flagship of the Be Well brand and is made up of three high-end models: the Winnipeg E585, the Vancouver E680 and the Edmonton E770.

By creating the Executive range, the company wanted to offer spas with an exclusive design – plush spas equipped with all the technologies at their disposal.

Therefore no options exist in the Executive range, as they are all included as standard.

Each one contains carefully positioned water jets so users can experience the best directional water placement to reduce stress and soothe tired muscles.

These top-quality hot tubs are available in a range of sizes and can accommodate five to seven people. Moulded seating has been ergonomically designed to provide maximum comfort while immersed in the heated water. Be Well hot tubs include the latest technological features with Bluetooth connectivity for music and LED lighting to create a soft

and relaxing atmosphere.

Sitting in the middle of the range, the Vancouver is a large family spa offering hydrotherapy via 80 jets along with air therapy, giving users the best of both worlds when it comes to massage. Styled with a curved front and back, this spacious six seater is jam packed with high-end features, such as touch screen controls, Bluetooth music and in.clear water purification from Gecko. There’s also impressive underwater lighting, including backlit jets and water features. If style and build quality is what you’re after, look no further.

ARTESIAN ELITE RANGE – ENJOY THE ULTIMATE IN HYDROTHERAPY

A customer looking for a premium hot tub model will already expect a superior design for comfort and quality of build, but Artesian push further to provide a hydrotherapy experience like no other.

The brand is home to one of the most premium lines of spas on the market, the Artesian Elite Class, which focuses heavily on hydrotherapy, energy efficiency, water quality and user experience. Each model within this range has been designed to offer features that ensure each hydrotherapy break is the best ever, making them the perfect addition to any health and well-being routine, during and after the lockdown period.

The Artesian Elite Class offers a unique solution for those who like to enjoy the finer things in life such as this Dove Canyon model Available through Superior Wellness, the Vancouver as part of Be Well’s three-model and flagship Executive
Providing a setting that offers users the ultimate hot tub experience for relaxation, recuperation and more, the premium end of the market is a somewhat niche, yet lucrative and therefore key market segment for manufacturers and retailers. Featuring models retailing over the £10,000 mark, high-end hot tubs boast the sector’s latest innovations and technology. This issue, we look at the brands and models competing at the luxury end of the market

For the ultimate hydrotherapy, the Artesian Elite class outperforms other spas by utilising patented DirectFlow™ technology with Variable Flow Control™. This fantastic invention maximises power with an individual pump per therapy seat to provide the spa user with their own direct water flow and control.

Not only does Variable Flow Control™ act like a dimmer switch adjusting the massage pressure from low to high and anywhere in between, but it saves up to 50% of the energy used by the pump when set to low.

The small 1.4hp energy efficient pumps, along with the DirectFlow™ technology have created the most powerful yet energy efficient spa range on the market.

The Artesian Elite line also features a revolutionary breakthrough in hydrotherapy jetting with their remarkable Helix™ jets.

Exclusive to Artesian, the Helix™ jet utilises a special shaped jet cylinder to create a powerful double helix spiral of water flow, providing one of the best deep tissue massages possible from any hot tub.

With a whole host of other features such as impeccable design, superior construction, innovative technology, and optional lighting and stereo systems, the Artesian Elite Class offers a unique solution for those who like to enjoy the finer things in life.

HIGH-END AND GREEN – OASIS OPTIONS FROM SUNBEACH SPAS

Last year, Sunbeach Spas were given a huge opportunity to bring the world-renowned Oasis Spas hot tubs and swim spas to the UK market.

Sold in 35 countries worldwide, these quiet, roomy and comfortable hot tubs are available exclusively through Sunbeach Spas.

Featuring one of the thickest and toughest shells on the market and strong frames, Oasis Spas are built to last! They are also some of the most energy efficient hot tubs available, with features including:

With a variety of massage experiences, the Ecstatic Wave a unique and highly therapeutic spa from Passion Spas

reduce heat loss significantly

• Low current pumps consume less energy than a 75W light bulb

• Covers which use high density foam to create a seal minimising heat loss.

The inside of the each Oasis Spa routes warm air back into the system to reduce the energy required to heat the water, and during circulation the water is kept at a regular temperature, reducing the energy used in a standard heating/cooling cycle.

Two models which sit at the top of the Oasis range are the HE-570 five person hot tub and the HE-760 six person model.

In addition to the ‘green’ features already outlined, both models come complete with a multi-layered cabinet insulation for high thermal efficiency. They’re fitted with up-todate Gecko electronics and controls, and the ozone module has a boost chamber for ultra clear water. Oasis have implemented cutting edge technology to fit the spas with a double filtration system and on the entertainment side, the HE range also boasts a Gecko Instream 2 music system with a 2 transducer speaker system and subwoofer, as well as illuminated valve controls and exterior corner lighting.

AQUAVIA SPA’S CUBE – MINIMALIST DESIGN AND ABSOLUTE ELEGANCE

The Spa Cube is one of Aquavia Spa’s star creations – a hot tub model for the most exclusive private and residential use. It’s not just design and engineering, but contemporary architecture – and that was the inspiration behind the concept of this top of the range hot tub, with its Zen-like minimalist lines. The Cube is the perfect hot tub for design lovers seeking a genuine piece with unique features that can be found nowhere else.

The Spa Cube is more than just therapeutic or purely relaxing, it is holistic too. It seeks physical, mental and emotional wellbeing via the five senses. Its 27 pressurised water jets, 12 hot air jets with Relax Impact System, and all of the small details designed for total comfort create a physical stimulation of incomparable wellbeing. Additionally, the Aromatherapy system releases fragrances into the air in bubbles to transform the hydromassage into a truly beneficial aromatherapy session. These sensations, along with the enveloping sound of the revolutionary Surround Bluetooth Audio system (four top range speakers and a powerful subwoofer), make the Spa Cube a perfect high-end experience.

For lighting inside the Spa Cube, an exclusive Colour Sense feature, with five multicoloured LED spotlights inside the hot tub, infuses the water with the selected colour or uses specially-programmed chromotherapy sequences for a fully unique experience. Outside, Pure Line lighting synchronises the light show around the entire perimeter of the sophisticated cabinet with invisible LED dots. The look is truly powerful and spectacular, transforming this work of advanced design into an outstanding addition to any space.

All of these features are controlled using a Balboa panel, which can be made even more sophisticated by adding the Wi-Fi control (Wi-Fi Touch Panel), to control, activate and modify the basic hot tub functions remotely, improving energy efficiency and maintenance savings.

such

nature has made them a hit for high-end

For destination spas, health clubs, holiday parks, leisure complexes or even high-end homes, getting the balance right between form and function can sometimes be a tricky ask. After all, what beats a fabulous looking unique project with the wow factor? Mmm, perhaps something more understated, more relaxing? Maybe it is something more functional, durable and economical? The truth is, there is no right or wrong answer as no two needs are ever the same… well rarely.

Thankfully, with the developments, improvements and sheer choice on offer within the tiled spa and swim spa sector, there’s no need to choose between form and function anymore. Both can be accommodated within a single, bespoke and durable package and it’s this that is the key to the success of this bespoke manufacturing sector.

Tiling and mosaic finishes offer a perfect way to create beautiful, unique products and whether for an everyday, special place to relax in or for a top luxury hotel, mosaic tiling provides the perfect, flexible solution and can fulfill the brief of providing a product and experience that is extra special and that will last for many years.

With a vast amount of options available for style and design, there’s no need to compromise as the results which can be obtained from these varied and flexible products means that anyone can be the proud owner of a truly unique tiled spa. Everyone likes to think that something they own is just that little bit different and a tiled spa or swim spa is a flexible platform to enable this to be achieved.

GMT AIM FOR SUPERIOR QUALITY AND SERVICE IN THE TILED SPA SECTOR

GMT specialise in the manufacture of bespoke high-end spas and have seen the business increase greatly over the last three years. With their in-house drawing office able to collaborate with architects and designers (or even a sketch from a client), they can

what’s on the market

produce precise drawings and renders which help the end user to visualise the finished project.

A tiled spa has many benefits over an acrylic or inflatable rival and can blend in with existing surroundings or stand out to make a statement. The tile choice makes the spa, hydrotherapy pool, swim spa or pool truly unique to the client due to the endless colours, sizes and textures on offer. GMT strongly recommend the use of joint point tiles as the whole surface area of the tile is in contact with the adhesive giving the ideal bond. In the past, issues with mesh backed tiles have led to the company now testing them for suitability before use and advising clients about possible issues.

Another benefit of a tiled spa is the longevity, at GMT they produce a fibreglass shell using marine grade resins and gelcoats, all of which are insulated and sitting on a stainless steel cradle with adjustable swivel feet giving a sturdy base on which to tile.

Of huge benefit is the ability to have a large spa or pool made in sections which are then joined and tiled by GMT’s factory workmen

on site, giving the appearance of a one-piece pool. This is of particular benefit when the site has restricted access or indeed if the pool is too big to be transported in one piece.

As an ISO registered company and proud members of SPATA, GMT’s ethos remains constant – to supply a superior quality product and service to their ever-growing list of customers both in the UK and abroad.

A TILED SPA OPTION FROM A TRIED AND TRUSTED HOT TUB MANUFACTURER

Better known for their acrylic finished hot tubs, swim spas and commercial spas, in the Oasis 40, Aquavia Spas are also able to offer a tiled spa option to the market.

As part of the company’s professional range, the Oasis 40 is an extremely practical 2.5m diameter overflow model with space for six people. Its size, its great performance, its exceptional design plus its variety of vitreous mosaic finishes make it suitable for many spaces and settings, both commercial and high-end residential.

It also has a chromotherapy LED light and the option of upgrading the accessory finishes to stainless steel.

Aquavia Spa’s professional models are designed for intensive recurrent use, with high reliability and a guarantee like no other on the market. Its anti-corrosion and non-deforming metal frame has a 15-year warranty, although they haven’t detected any issues beyond that time frame. Moreover, its external pumping, heating and filtration equipment is fully reliable, with the peace of mind of having been developed and manufactured exclusively by Aquavia Spa.

The Spa Oasis 40 is a great example of this guaranteed power and high performance, as well as careful energy efficiency, which can be complemented by an isothermal cover to prevent heat loss when the hot tub is on standby or when the establishment is closed or out of service.

Flooring To Protect What’s Important

For the spaces that surround pools and spas, there’s literally no room for any slipups. With flooring materials assessed for how slippery they are when wet and under foot, there’s extra pressure to ensure floors – especially in commercial environments – provide a safe level of grip regardless of the conditions.

Thankfully, there’s a wide choice of safety flooring materials available to suit any application and budget. In this issue, we examine the options that are enhancing safety in wet leisure environments

Whether you’re responsible for a large public swimming pool or a small spa in the garden, the safety of the people using products that involve water will always be the highest priority. And that applies to the area surrounding them too. If the correct materials are not used, surfaces around wet leisure facilities and in changing rooms can be extremely slippery under foot when wet, and sadly, accidents can often occur.

Fortunately, through the use of anti- and low-slip products, there are a number of ways to reduce accidents in both domestic and commercial environments – and the good news is that there are so many options now available, in so many styles and colours, there’s something for every need. From stone, to resins, vinyls and more, safety flooring comes in a variety of natural and man-made materials.

In addition to providing peace of mind, themes can also be incorporated into safety flooring and pool surrounds too, meaning that everything flows and transition areas are seamless.

With so many options on offer for a variety of wet leisure settings, in this latest issue, we take a look at just a handful of the options that are available this season.

Each tile holds 196 coloured inserts. That’s where the creativity comes in as an unlimited colour palette of RAL colours means that any design and any logo can be created.

Anti-slip and comfortable to walk on barefoot, Versoflor is made from a specially developed material called polytrobe, which is UV, water and chemical resistant and incorporates antimicrobials to combat bacteria.

The base tiles can be trimmed and connected to other tiles.

The product is both aesthetically pleasing, versatile and highly functional. For instance, with Certikin’s optional LED lighting system connected to the underside of the base tile, mood lighting can be introduced and walk ways highlighted. And that’s not all – under floor heating can be accommodated too.

The Versoflor design provides natural drainage when laid over other floors and can be used as an integrated final flooring system to enhance pool or spa areas. Ideal for use in changing rooms, with or without the mosaic inserts, the product also delivers the highest slip resistance available in comparative products.

EXPERTS IN CUSTOMER SERVICE PLUS A PERFECT AND SAFE POOL FINISH

From pool surrounds and landscaping in 2004 to specialising in pool surround and tank tiles since 2012, Luxury Pools & Mosaics pride themselves on supplying high end products at reasonable prices, from Europe and beyond.

For a completely bespoke project, they advise that natural materials can not be beaten. All the company’s mosaics and tiles are specially designed for use in pools, spas and other wet leisure areas.

Product innovation has lead to a new stylish and safe concept with Luxury Pools & Mosaics now able to supply soft, anti-slip finishes –unheard of until recently. Providing comfort underfoot, easy cleaning is also a feature and a great advantage in areas where a rough nonslip product makes the task difficult.

Another benefit is that the same tile finish can be used in and around the pool plus into adjoining areas, where an anti-slip tile is not necessarily needed, but this keeps the uniformity and continuity of the flooring throughout the whole project for a seamless finish.

Suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, these are available in both

Return Of The World’s Largest Industry Event

Piscine Global Europe, the leading global event in the pool and wellness sector, will be back in Lyon for a faceto-face event from 15 to 18 November this year. It will finally provide an opportunity for professionals in the sector to gather, exchange views and boost their business, but also – at long last – to meet up in a social setting.

Organised in partnership with the French Federation for Pool and Spa Professionals (FFP), Piscine Global Europe is now more than ever a strategic international event for the wet leisure sector as a whole and the event will see several hundred exhibitors and brands return to Lyon’s Eurexpo venue.

Florence Rousson Mompo, Director of the GreenTech+ Department of GL events Exhibitions Operations, advised: “After four years of absence, players in the sector can’t wait to meet in person in Lyon once again. We are so looking forward to sharing this exhibition with all the professionals: it’s a key moment for doing business and presenting new products, but also a time for getting together socially!”

Piscine Global Europe has built a reputation as an unmissable event for anticipating, understanding and discussing both current challenges and also future developments in the sector and seminars along with dedicated themed areas will

encourage discussions and improve understanding of these topics.

During the four days, various activities will also set the tone for this new edition of the exhibition, including:

• The Pool Arena – A modern, innovative conference area, the Arena will offer audiences a genuine experience through a programme of short talks on hard-hitting topics. Interspersed with talks on the latest trends, exhibitors will also take part in sessions highlighting their own products. Innovation will be a key focus for the key themes addressed in the Pool Arena in 2022. Sustainable development, digitisation, training and recruitment will all be discussed.

• The Pool Showcase – Piscine Global Europe is committed to and supporting innovation in the pool and spa industry. The event is now a springboard for the launch and promotion of new products on the French and international markets

and to highlight these, a number of the most recent products are showcased at the entrance to the exhibition halls.

• The Pool Innovation Awards – This competition showcases innovations in the sector. With a track record stretching back more than 40 years, Piscine Global Europe is the flagship event where the professionals unveil all their latest innovations. An exhibition itinerary will identify exhibitors presenting an innovative product or service that has been nominated for an award. Winners will be revealed at a ceremony on the Tuesday and the three winning products or services will be showcased in a specific area of the exhibition.

• The Pool Design Awards – With an Awards ceremony taking place on the Thursday, these Awards shine a spotlight on architects and their pool projects, whether for private pools, public pools or as a renovation project.

• The Jobs and Training Campus – Piscine Global Europe is joining forces with the FPP to organise a first for 2022. This area will bring together initial and continuing training organisations that will be on hand to answer questions from employers, employees, jobseekers, adults making a career change, and young people in education.

Reducing the environmental impact of public and private pools will be a big theme at the show. Optimisation of water and energy consumption, waste management, a novel approach to water treatment, the challenges of pool renovation and maintenance... no matter the specific subject, sustainable development is a key topic of discussion in the sector. Pool professionals are aware of this and are taking action to reduce the environmental impact of private and public pools, whether through technologies or new approaches and practices.

DEVELOPMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY TO MEET THE CHALLENGES OF CLIMATE CHANGE

According to the FPP, the advancement of technologies, with higher performance

and lower consumption, and the commitment of professionals in the sector, have enabled real progress to be made in terms of energy consumption, water treatment and waste management In pool water treatment, 80% of the process is mechanical (filtration) and 20% involves products used to eliminate bacteria and keep the water clean. Although filtration systems consume 6.5 times less energy than 40 years ago, it must also be noted that alternatives to the use of these chemicals are becoming more widespread. Thus, treatment by salt chlorination, ozone or UV are gaining popularity amongst both professionals and private pool owners.

Water consumption has also dropped sharply in France: -45% in 25 years. This number is explained by a combination of two factors: • Innovation leading to the use of more effective filtration techniques in particular, reducing the quantity of new water used • The reduced volumes of water in smaller swimming pools.

Energy consumption of pools has also significantly decreased, whether for heating, filtration or lighting, which now consumes 40 times less energy than 40 years ago.

Regarding management of waste from pools and pool equipment, 60% is recycled, 30% is eliminated or energy is recovered from it, and 10% is re-used. The FPP is currently working on setting up waste management solutions, in connection with renowned eco-organisations in the context of the application of the wider responsibility of manufacturers for products and materials in the construction or building sector (REP PCMB).

CHANGES IN DEMAND – THE CHALLENGE OF RENOVATION

Advances in techniques, energy optimisation, a change of aesthetic criteria, a new garden layout... these are all reasons to renovate a pool from an ageing installation to a modern pool that meets current challenges. Renovation provides an opportunity to benefit from the latest progress not only in terms of heating, water quality and energy savings, but also materials and design.

Regarding public pools, often built in the 1960s/1970s, concerns involving energy renovation and harmonisation with current standards are just as important.

CHANGES IN DEMAND – THE CHALLENGE OF RECYCLING MATERIALS

Recycling or re-use solutions are already available for pool materials. However, for certain elements such as PVC liners (which must be replaced every 10-15 years), or shells made of polyester and other plastics, there are at present no suitable recovery or recycling solutions. The FPP is currently looking into how these can be set up, in connection with eco-organisations.

CHANGES IN DEMAND –AUTOMATION

Pool automation contributes to saving energy. You can, for example, manage the pool heat pump so it only runs when necessary, depending on the water temperature. The same is true for optimisation of filtration systems, and management of pool covers, water treatment or lighting.

CHANGES IN DEMAND – NEW SKILLS

The demand from the wider public in terms of more sustainable and automated pools with higher performance requires development of skills amongst the teams of professionals involved in these various aspects. Training in natural water treatments, pool and home automation, or the wider responsibility of manufacturers for buildings and recycling, is now offered at initial or adult training centres in the form of modules, enabling professionals to meet the demands and challenges of the market.

BRANDS/COMPANIES THAT WILL BE FAMILIAR FOR UK VISITORS

Moving back to the exhibition floor, for those travelling from the UK, there will be a number of familiar brands at the show from both at home and from abroad. There is also representation from a number of UK-based companies too, some of which will be using the

Attractive And Effective Pool Enclosure Options

With energy costs having already risen and with uncertainty about them, the good old British weather and dare I say it, even overseas travel plans, if ever there was a right time to invest in an enclosure for an outdoor swimming pool, well now surely has to be it.

Opting for an effective cover-up means that swimming and pool-based outdoor leisure time can not only continue way past the normal seasonal shut down, but pool owners in the residential sector and commercial operators can also look to achieve some cost savings – or at least minimise the rises due to high and potentially escalating energy and other running costs that are being impacted by inflation.

The benefits don’t stop there though. Enclosures provide a number of additional safety benefits. They make it almost impossible for children or pets to access the pool area unattended, slips and therefore falls can also be reduced by keeping the surrounding are free from ice and rain plus many protect swimmers from harmful UV rays.

Yes, enclosures are clearly a substantial investment, but with so many improvements provided for the overall swimming experience, its easy to see why they are increasingly popular, with many owners seeing the numerous benefits on offer through their installation.

There is a superb selection of fabulous

enclosures that come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit the majority of site requirements and the most particular of customers too. So in this issue, we take a look at some of the glazed cover-up solutions that are available.

A WIDE RANGE OF MODELS, ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION… ALUKOV OFFERS IT ALL

Alukov is very proud to present the UK market with the widest range of enclosures from one manufacturer – from ultra-low, medium, high, free standing, lean-to and spa domes – all enclosures are fully bespoke and can satisfy any need.

Alukov are known as innovators within the sector and are constantly developing their products. Following the trend for popular ultra low enclosures (which must be open when the pool is in use) one of the newest models is the CHAMPION. With lightweight construction and telescopic segments, it features timeless design, solid materials and a sophisticated platform. It is available in two models with the eCHAMPION option featuring motors and a remote control for increased ease of use. The powerful but quiet operation of electric motors on both sides of the eCHAMPION allows users to open or close the pool enclosure smoothly. The motors are supplied with reliable integrated

batteries that are automatically recharged by the built-in solar collectors.

For pools that need an enclosure to be closed when in use, Alukov’s UNIVERSE NEO™ is a truly universal choice, especially for pools within the domestic sector. This cover offers the compromise between low and high enclosure. It features a rounded shape which gives a higher central line positioned over the middle of the pool. The wider the enclosure, the higher the centre of the building is. If owners opt for a wider model, a table, chairs or sun loungers can be placed under this enclosure.

Alukov provide a full service from manufacturing to transport and even installation. Their preference is that the enclosures are fully pre-assembled in the factory and then transported in complete sections. This means that not only is the installation itself incredibly fast – half a day to one day, depending on size – it is also very clean.

Given the brief to construct a ‘budget-friendly, low maintenance pool, with an enclosure to extend the swimming season’, Hayling Island-based Simplex Pools turned to Certikin.

A five-bay AQ Box telescopic enclosure was chosen for its aesthetics, versatility and ease of installation. With a uniquely low profile, solid design, the AQ Box enclosure offers a simple yet durable solution without impinging on the landscape. Delivered flat-packed in a wooden box for easy assembly, the AQ Box is offered in two different types of glazing – 6mm double wall polycarbonate or 3mm SAN solid – both UV protected on each side. The enclosure parts are made of elegant, contemporary anodized aluminium alloy profiles.

The enclosure comes with a state-of-the-art locking system which provides positioning and securing on the rails as well as ensuring child-safe locking. The client wanted the enclosure to be off throughout the summer, and wanted to disguise the tracks, so Simplex sunk the tracks deep below the finished level of decking and made bespoke matching lids to cover the tracks when not in use. THREE BRANDS ON OFFER FROM EXTENDING OUTDOORS LEISURE

The team behind Salisbury-based Extending Outdoors Leisure have been installing retractable swimming pool enclosures for more than 25 years.

The company design, supply and fit made to measure swimming pool enclosures anywhere in the UK. Alternatively, they offer standard and supply only pool enclosures as well as a DIY option enabling end users and owners to save on installation costs.

The company offer three brands meaning the product range is extensive with products available from Spanish firm MaperGlas, Polish company Aluna and French brand Azenco. The buildings can be fixed or retractable are made to measure and can be single or double glazed.

Commercially they offer far more insulated buildings whether fixed or retractable than others. This is particularly true of schools as some local authorities decline plastic swimming pool enclosures due to their cost to maintain a suitable environment all year as those products do not offer much heat insulation and costs may be excessive to heat in the colder periods if used all year. Up to a ten-year warranty is offered on the build and installation, plus there is a 15-year warranty on the glazing.

There are other products available for spas and hot tubs, retractable garden rooms, retractable buildings for restaurant, hotel and other concerns who seek a quick economical extension to cover a patio area, outside eating area, reception area etc.

There is also the option not only to replace older pool buildings but also refurbish some as a more economical option. In short, whatever a customer is looking for, Extending Outdoors Leisure can offer a solution, especially as they have a sister company whose garden patio ideas transform outdoor living spaces.

ENCLOSURES FROM CERTIKIN –AN OPEN AND SHUT CASE

Certikin have a huge range of enclosures, which are suitable for any pool size or shape and will fit into most environments due to the colour options and styles that are on offer.

Great for extending the home and creating an additional living space, many of the models come with secure locking systems, making it almost impossible for children to be in the pool unattended.

Certikin’s AQ Box DIY Pool Enclosures are entry-level structures which are supplied flatpacked and ready to build. These enclosures come in three different sizes with a choice of two glazing options. Everything is supplied in a box together with an assembly manual making them a fast and cost-effective way to fit a high-quality pool enclosure. With a uniquely low profile and solid design, the AQ Box enclosure is perfect for those looking for a simple yet durable solution.

The most popular model in Certikin’s range

is the Endless Summer enclosure. It is fixed along its length, which allows the windows and wall sections to slide up into the roof, leaving the sides open – a key advantage over traditional enclosure models. The rigid and durable structure offers elegant and graceful aesthetics while still retaining key safety and protective features. Each enclosure comes equipped with a double wall polycarbonate roof, while the side doors and wall endings of the pool enclosure are constructed from solid, transparent polycarbonate panels.

For those who desire the least intrusive pool enclosure possible, the Horizontal enclosure combines an ultra-low telescopic design with durable construction. It’s perfect for spaces where height may be an issue without compromising on strength and flexibility.

Providing The Power To Swim Against The Current

When it comes to increasing the overall functionality of swimming pool spaces, especially within smaller pools, counter-current systems are perhaps one of the most effective add-ons for both new and existing installations. The technology has been a driving force behind the success of swim spas and an increasing number of pools are now incorporating them. Affordable and easy to install, in this issue, we take a look at the brands that are providing the power behind these systems

There’s various reasons why a larger swimming pool isn’t always a possibility or even a necessity.

Perhaps space is an issue or a budget is restricted. Maybe there are aesthetic reasons why a large pool just won’t work. Whatever the reason, sometimes a small pool is the only viable option but whilst fun, they often just seem to lack that certain something –and often, it’s the ability to enjoy a proper, uninterrupted swim. The answer to this problem for many pools and their owners is a counter-current system and they’re use and incorporation in pools, particularly those of a smaller nature, is becoming more widespread. That’s no real surprise given they are a product which enhances the usability of smaller pools and add some much-needed wow factor. Their installation puts them more on a par with their larger format rivals and in certain circumstances, you could even argue they surpass them.

Of course, their use isn’t restricted to just smaller pools, but that is clearly where they are best deployed and really come into their own.

Regardless of pool size, once installed, a counter-current system makes it possible to have unlimited fun, swim for as long as a user likes plus their introduction can often provide some additional hydrotherapy options too. With built-in and over-the-wall options available, there are no excuses for

not exercising in any pool or maximising the area’s full potential – especially as there is now more choice than ever within the sector. So, with their popularity on the up, we take a closer look at some of the counter-current options that are available.

TRAIN LIKE AN ATHLETE WITH THE EVASTREAM COUNTER-CURRENT

Turn a pool into a professional training facility with the EVAstream counter-current unit available from Golden Coast and now PPG UK (www.polletpoolgroup. co.uk) too.

With EVAstream swimmers can improve swimming technique and ability, as the unit delivers a powerful jet of water

to swim against to help build strength and conditioning.

“A counter-current unit is a great way to enhance a pool, but in terms of performance, EVAstream is in a league of its own,” said Adam Clark, General Manager at Golden Coast. “It has a flow rate of up to 8.5m/s (350m3/h) and the option of using pre-programmed training modes to add variety to a regime.

“Impressively, EVAstream provides this exceptional output on just a single-phase supply, unlike many other products on the market which use three-phase supply making them very expensive to install.”

EVAstream is extremely energy efficient and fits to a standard 16A 230V connection, with a consumption of just 2.2kW. It has been extensively tested to ensure it meets the most stringent safety standards, including DIN EN16582-1/2/3, EN16713-2, EN13451-1/3.

EVAstream is available as a recessed model for new pool builds, or as a surface-mounted model for retrofitting onto existing pools.

“If you’re looking to revamp a pool, the EVAstream surface-mounted unit is ideal. It is compact and lightweight and can be easily attached to a pool wall,” advised Adam Clark.

The EVAstream is available in three variations: EVAstream Fit, Pro and Max, with each unit catering to varied levels of swimming experience and requirements.

The flow of water can be adjusted between 10% and 100%, so EVAstream can also be used for lower-level activity such as rehabilitation, or just to aid relaxation when unwinding in the pool.

“EVAstream makes an outstanding difference to a pool,” said Adam Clark. “Whether you use it for a workout, or a fun feature for the kids, EVAstream offers something for everyone.”

CERTIKIN INVITE OWNERS TO ENJOY LIFE IN THE FASTLANE

Whether training to be an Olympic swimmer or simply swimming for the joy of it, Certikin have counter-current options to suit all levels of swimming needs.

The Fastlane Pro from Endless Pools sits at the top end of the Certikin range and is a product which effectively turns a swimming pool into a health club. Athletes love the adjustable speed swim current and, for those in training mode, it is also possible to add Fit@Home which lets the customer control their Fastlane Pro from any smart device, meaning that you can programme and repeat advanced, multispeed ‘interval’ workouts.

What sets this counter-current apart is that the turbulence-free water stream is wider than the swimmer’s body and deeper than any swim stroke, yet it is narrow enough not to impinge on other swimmers. Unlike jetted alternatives, the Fastlane generates a wide block of crystal clear, bubble-free and completely adjustable water flow, delivering a fast, smooth swim current up to a 1:14/100m pace (a necessity for any serious swimmer).

It’s suitable for almost any pool – free form or rectangular: gunite, vinyl or fibreglass; new construction or retrofit. The required minimum water depth is 0.9m. It’s particularly suitable for small swimming pools as it lets users swim for as long as they like

without turning.

Certikin also supplies its own branded entry-level counter-current system – an affordable option designed for small private pools. It is equipped with a 3hp pump to create an adjustable counter-stream of water. The directional inlet allows a 15° inclination in any direction and also features an adjustable air/water mixer for a relaxing bubble massage effect.

SWIMEO JET STREAM TURBINES –FOR SWIMMERS OF ALL ABILITIES

Available through Fairlocks Pool Products, SWIMEO is a range of jet stream turbines for everybody – from beginners to advanced swimmers.

Unlike some jet stream pumps, which offer limited power and uncertain reliability, the SWIMEO jet stream turbine is fully submerged, quiet and reliable.

Available through Fairlocks Pool Products, the SWIMEO S1 model features a functional, modern design

Manufactured in France by SIREM, these turbines are recommended for competitive and amateur swimmers looking for a private swimming pool counter-current solution to complement their traditional pool or open water training. The maximum power of the SWIMEO is equivalent to a swimming speed of 1 min 50 seconds per 100m.

The products offer a fantastic flow power/ comfort ratio. The wide flow improves the body’s stability in the water and increases tolerance to lateral movements. With SWIMEO, the swimmer can move to either side of the flow without the risk of losing perceived power.

All the turbines in the SWIMEO range are controlled either by a wireless remote control or via the smartphone application, which can be used to create training programmes. Within them, the intensity of the stream can be varied over time.

Currently available is the S1 model, which features a functional, modern design. The positioning of the inlets and the shape of the hydrodynamic appendages have been designed to offer the best performance and price combination available.

Available for the 2023 season, the X1 is recommended for new construction projects. This model is built-in and supplied with an integration kit and a grid that allows the turbine to be perfectly hidden in the pool wall.

NO MATTER THE REQUIREMENT, UWE HAS A SOLUTION

German manufacturer UWE invented the counter-current system in 1967 and their creation has revolutionised the traditional swimming pool. By regulating the current, even small pools can become really exciting –and that goes for trained athletes as well.

With a wide portfolio of counter-current systems, there’s a solution for a wide range of swimming needs and abilities. Sitting at the top of the company’s range is the TriVA

counter-current system.

It was designed with ambitious athletes in mind and thanks to its innovative FLAT technology, TriVA creates a flat, powerful flow just below the water’s surface – right at chest and shoulder height, right where an athlete needs resistance. Depending on the version, the pressure-sensitive single-button PIEZO control offers three power settings: from 75 m3/h to 225 m3/h. To ensure an optimal flow channel, the WAVE safety filter inlet cover (included) should be installed directly opposite from TriVA.

For customers wanting high performance for minimum outlay, popular choices are the EUROJET and DUNA compact systems. Featuring PVC ball valves, PVC pipes and the control panel – all the components are preassembled and it takes minimum effort to install, but gives maximum pleasure. In variants from 11 to 18 litres per second, all with a swivel nozzle, fully adjustable flow, plus an air bubble bath.

Even pool owners who do not have the option of retrofitting a counter-current system don’t have to be deprived of the pleasure thanks to the TREVI and TREVI LUX surfacemounted systems! Just fit them on the edge of the pool and plunge into fun.

With a range that is constantly being enhanced, a wide selection of UWE’s countercurrent products are available through experienced specialists Jetstream UK who also carry spares to support the systems (including legacy units back to the 1970s) and distributor SCP UK.

PLASTICA PUMP UP THE FLOW WITH NEW MODELS

New for 2022, Plastica’s SwimMaster™ counter-current unit has been specifically chosen to complement their range of premium wooden pools, however it is not restricted to just them and is suitable for most conventional pool structures too. Its sleek, minimalist design means it can be

situated perfectly into wooden pools but Plastica can also supply stainless steel extensions to allow simple installation into concrete pool structures. Coupled to a Nadorself 3hp jet pump, this unit is capable of flowing at up to 60m3/h.

The X-Stream Duo counter-current unit, made with a stainless-steel niche and grab rail, is Plastica’s new through-the-wall unit. It’s easy to install, gives a neater finish and is more powerful than its over-the-wall alternative. Featuring directional nozzles for fine adjustment of the flow, it comes with two of the Espa Wiper pumps and gives an impressive 100m3/h output.

Each X-Stream Duo kit option comes with a complete plumbing kit and counter-current controller. The duo unit has a sequential start system, so the pumps have a start delay between them and it uses pneumatic On/Off switches, accessible from the pool to keep

any electrics away from the bather.

Perfect for a small size pool where space is limited, Plastica also sell the countercurrent jet with white LED light kit which is ideal for fitness training, underwater massage and endless no-lap swimming. The Jet can be used as a single or double jet system with one or two pumps. The counter-current face plate is fitted with a white LED light, along with the On/Off light switch for ease of access while in the water.

Lastly, if an over-the-wall unit is needed, there’s a range of options including the BADU® Jet Perla, Riva and Stella, the latter of which has two swivelling nozzles. This model comes with White or RGB LED colour changing ambient lighting for night exercise or an atmospheric and relaxing swim.

A MORE NATURAL FLOW – BINDER TURBINE SYSTEMS FROM OCEA UK

Ocea UK exclusively supply the increasingly popular range of turbine counter-current systems from German manufacturer Binder.

The built-in Hydrostar option offers a unique 24V turbine-driven fully submerged counter flow system which brings a natural swimming experience to any home pool.

The patented technology has already received numerous prestigious awards, including a Golden Wave Award, a German Brand Award and a Plus X Award.

As opposed to conventional counter-current systems, HydroStar generates a wide water flow which carries the body in the water similar to a natural river current, without any splashing. Unlike pump-operated swim systems, there is no concentrated jet that causes unpleasant concentrated strain on the head or shoulders. The wide and regular over and undercurrent of the HydroStar engulfs the entire body.

Hydrostar has a range of turbines that offer a flow capacity for all swimmers.

Welcome To The Metaverse

– It’s The Next Big Thing

It’s been on the news, it’s been in the papers and Mark Zuckerberg has renamed his empire after it. The Metaverse is the hot new thing that will change the way we live and work. Again.

If you do Facebook advertising, you’ll see that you are now doing Meta for Business. You might also have noticed that other than the logo, nothing much seems to have changed but Facebook are claiming that they will change from a social media business to a Metaverse one within five years.

Computer geeks and business analysts love predicting the future because it makes them sound very wise and they can never be caught out as, once we are all actually living in that future, no one can ever remember what their predictions were.

For instance, The Wall Street Journal says that Metaverse spending will total $5 trillion in 2030. That’s trillions of dollars spent in a virtual place that even its biggest supporters agree doesn’t really exist yet.

ARTIFICIAL REALITY

We are increasingly being told to put our faith in technology, in the digital space, in a technocentric world that most of us don’t really understand and the Metaverse is being touted as that next big tech revolution.

It will be a virtual world built of augmented reality and accessed via VR headsets, but surely we spend more than enough time on screen already. I thought the idea was that we should try and cut down.

Don’t get me wrong. I think new technologies can be marvellous. Netflix and Strava have changed my life for the better, but I don’t want to work in a virtual office or spend time with virtual friends.

I could play Tour de France 2022 on Xbox but it wouldn’t be half as much fun as cycling to work in the rain.

VIRTUAL INTELLIGENCE

The pandemic certainly has changed the way we work though.

We have two Teams suites at Golden Coast and we have online meetings with customers

on a regular basis, even though we no longer have to. I still believe that face-to-face meetings are best but we have been able to cut our mileage down significantly and it’s hard not to appreciate something that lets you spend less time on the motorway.

Will a virtual reality version of Zoom or Teams be significantly better than what we have now? Will it encourage us to spend more time communicating and working like that?

I don’t think so, but that is the way the tech industry is trying to take us.

REAL LIFE

The pleasure that people get from their pools, spas and saunas is a visceral, tactile and sensual one. It’s about the feeling of moving through water, being massaged by the spa jets or feeling the heat of the sauna warming your bones.

None of that could be further from a digital experience if it tried but we are now offering a ‘virtual sauna’ that people can explore online.

The Harmony Configurator is a clever, online tool that lets you examine all the possible options – from exterior design and materials to interior bench layouts and different heater and lighting options – and see how they interact with one another. You

can explore exactly how your bespoke sauna will look.

In the Metaverse your avatar will be able to walk into the sauna and throw water on the heater stones.

A SORROWFUL EXPERIENCE

Queen Elizabeth’s passing was a sad occasion and it was easy to feel the depth of feeling that spread through the country. What was perhaps more surprising was the number of people who took part in the funeral ceremonies.

The Queen’s funeral drew audiences of up to 28 million in the UK and as many as 4 billion people watched worldwide. However, an astounding one million people attended the public funeral procession in London. The Queen spent four days lying in state as mourners slowly passed her coffin after standing in what was, at its longest, a ten mile queue that took up to 24 hours to move from beginning to end.

These were real people wanting to share real feelings.

It was for the Coronation of Elizabeth II that television really came into its own with many homes buying a set just so they could watch. The end of her reign coincided with what may prove to be the beginnings of a new way for people to communicate, to socialise and to gather but it’s flesh and blood feelings that matter, and that will never change.
