A brilliant and brave jockey, who had his fair share of misfortune with injuries – a broken neck forced him to retire from race riding – Adrian Maguire is now forging a successful career as a trainer and while laid back in personality, he has plenty to say about the state of racing in his home country. T SAYS much for Adrian Maguire Racing that it has taken me nearly two months to pin the great man himself down for an interview. It isn’t that he’s difficult or unwilling, quite the contrary as he finally welcomes me into his yard, but the Irish weather has conspired with the almost chaotic Irish racing calendar to create additional hardships all trainers could do without. Under the circumstances, having arrived on a rare day with no scheduled runners, I expected to meet with a man in a hurry to get things done and full of complaints at the current flawed system here in Ireland. I was, of course, wrong. Like all great trainers, Adrian Maguire is quiet, relaxed, laid back. Nothing seems to fluster him. Perhaps it’s the soothing
