Everett E. Tom went to be with our Lord and Savior and rejoin his son Kevin R. Tom on February 6, 2022. Everett was born on July 23, 1928 in Leesburg, IN to Everett E. Tom, Sr. and Violet Fisher Tom. On December 6, 1953, he was married to Marie Eby in Syracuse, Indiana. Everett’s twin sister Evelyn (Charles) Adams survives along with his sister Peggy “Jo Jo” Sheler. Everett and Marie had five children: Ambassador Kip Tom of Leesburg, IN, Kevin Tom (who predeceased him in September 1973), Melinda (Russ) Woda of Powell, OH, Melissa (Ray) Gerber of Milford, IN, and Melodie (Scott) Thompson of Delaware, OH. Everett and Marie share thirteen grandchildren: Kip’s children Kandi (Mark) Dunwiddie, Kassandra (Greg) Rowland, Kyle (Angie) Tom, Kristopher Tom and Kaitlyn (Jon) Fussle; Melinda’s children Rachael Gale of Powell, Ohio, Elyse Woda of Yakima, WA and Daniel Woda of Seattle, WA; Melissa’s children Megan (Steve) Burns of New Paris, IN, Ashley (Adam) Armstrong of Warsaw, IN, Kourtney (Josh) VanCleave of Goshen, IN, Justin (Katie) Gerber of Syracuse, IN, and Jessica (Chaz) Scherer of Nappanee, IN; Melodie’s children Allie Thompson of Columbus, OH and Chapman Thompson of Columbus, OH. Everett and Marie also share twenty-six Great Grandchildren, Peyton, Kendall, Reagan, Reese, Keegan, Kamden, Kameron, Savannah, Norah, Thomas, Emilia, Everett, Ava, Nolan, Molly, Addison, Avery, Annabelle, Olivia, Maxwell, Brooklyn, Emma, Bayne, Bohdan, Corbin and Cameron. He was preceded in death by his siblings Betty Shissler, Ann Noel and Frank Tom.

Everett began his life on Harper Road just north of Leesburg, IN, growing up on the Tom Family Farm and close to New Salem Church where he was a member. It was this same farm where Everett and Marie raised their five children and where he worked his entire life up and until his final days. Everett often said the most important crop he and Marie would ever produce is the next generation, instilling in them the values that were most important for the future. He would recite Proverbs, “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Everett believed that it is your responsibility as parents to teach your children good values and principles, to teach them about God and how much He loves them, to teach them that honesty is the best policy, and to teach them the Golden Rule: Treat others as you want to be treated.

Everett was known for his efforts in founding Tom Farms, scaling

the family business and even being a part of international businesses. Everett also started Everett Tom Show Cattle and so enjoyed seeing and raising his new calves each year. In addition, Everett had a passion for youth in 4-H and their beef projects. He loved his time spent in the barn with his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. He loved nothing more than watching them work their 4-H animals. Even in his 90’s, he was still mentoring and impacting young people. He has given opportunities to many young people over the years by gifting them a steer or heifer to raise and show. Everett was known and respected across the U.S. for his quality Beef Cattle Breeding Stock.

Everett and Marie enjoyed traveling together, including seeing the sights in South America, North America and Europe. Their last trip was to Rome, Italy, with two of their daughters to see their son, Kip, who was serving as a U.S. Ambassador, meet the Pope, tour the United States Embassy and enjoy many excursions in and around Rome.

In addition to his involvement with 4-H, Everett was active in the North Webster Church of God, a former long term member of Living Gospel Church in Nappanee, IN, and spent many years supporting the gifting of Bibles through Gideon’s International organization. He was also involved with the American Chianina Association (for which he served as President), National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Indiana Beef Cattle Association (for which he was honored with Cattleman of the Year) and locally in The Kosciusko County Cattlemen.

But most important for Everett was his family – Everett loved spending time with his family. His family will forever cherish the time that they had with him and the love with which he blessed them.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 11, 2022 at the Church of God in North Webster, IN.

Preferred memorials may be given to the Wawasee Camp of Gideon’s International, P.O. Box 101, Syracuse, IN 46567 or Three Strands medical relief work, P.O. Box 753, Winona Lake, IN 46590 or go to www.three-strands.org to donate online.

In Memory…

William R. “Bill” Angell was born in Lansing, Michigan to Robert D. and Frances L. Angell on August 24, 1946 and passed from this world on January 27, 2022.

Bill was raised on a small farm in Michigan where he first acquired his love for agriculture. After graduating from East Lansing High School, he enrolled at Michigan State University (MSU) where he would begin his lifetime involvement with the cattle industry. Bill was an avid evaluator of livestock and was a member of the livestock judging team at MSU where he had great success and always valued the instruction he received from his coach and lifelong friend, Dr. Harlan Ritchie. Upon graduation from MSU, Bill continued his education by earning master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin where his success in livestock judging continued, but this time as the coach. All the success he experienced as a coach paled in comparison to the most important thing he received while in Wisconsin and that was the introduction to the love of his life, Donna Zimmerman.

Bill and Donna were married on April 30, 1971 and spent the next 50 plus years together making a life of memories and leaving their mark on so many people. Shortly after their marriage, Bill and Donna moved to Lexington, Kentucky where Bill coached the livestock judging team at the University of Kentucky and continued to impact many young people who would go on to do great things in the industry. Throughout his life, when Bill would recognize the potential a young person had to impact the industry or to achieve their goals, he was the first one to lend support and to share some of his expertise he had gathered along his journey. His willingness to take the time to share words of encouragement with people over the years was an invaluable gift to so many.

On April 17, 1973, Bill and Donna started their family with the birth of their first-born, Blake William. After two years at the University of Kentucky, Bill made a career change that would set in motion the next nearly 50 years of his professional life. In the fall of 1973, Bill moved his family to Pine Bluff, Arkansas as he became a field man for the American Polled Hereford Association. This is where Bill’s love for the purebred side of the cattle industry was forged. He traveled throughout a four-state region, as well as nationally, working with Polled Hereford breeders assisting them with the marketing and promotion of their operations and conducting the business of the Association.

While in Arkansas, Bill and Donna grew their family with the first blessing coming on September 27, 1976 in the birth of their daughter Miki Renee. Just a short 13 months later, another blessing arrived in the birth of their third child on October 29, 1977 with their daughter Marisa “Missy” Lynn.

In 1978, Bill and Donna moved their family to Colorado as Bill accepted a position with the Record Stockman newspaper. Bill loved working with seedstock operations and assisting them with their marketing and promotional strategies for their annual production sales.

Bulletin

One of his most valued and loved contributions in this capacity was the ability to provide ringman services at these production sales. For those in the cattle business, Bill was a fixture ringside at production sales across the country for decades. He had a knack for figuring up the sale average within moments of the conclusion of any sale. Those who knew of this ability would seek him out to see how the sale ended up, because even in today’s world of computers, he was always the first one to have the averages tabulated.

After leaving the Record Stockman, Bill worked for Superior Livestock Auction for a number of years where he built the sale catalog, developed the advertising and promotional campaigns and generated the sale reports. However, Bill’s passion remained in the purebred side of the business and when he had the opportunity, he returned to that segment of the industry when he became the Yards Manager at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS). Over the many years he was at NWSS, Bill’s contributions to the activities that took place “in the yards” were immeasurable. One of his contributions became an iconic glimpse of history when he constructed the “Wall of Champions” in the Livestock Center. It provided a visual tour to the past for all who viewed it. Bill’s most recent impact on the industry was known through his time as Livestock Manager at the Nebraska State Fair. Bill was hired when the fair moved to its new location in Grand Island and he played a pivotal role in advancing not only the Nebraska State Fair, but the incredible facilities, to one of the premiere livestock show venues in the country.

Bill gave a lifetime of service to the cattle industry and his contributions to it were vast. Bill was not one who looked for praise or recognition, but found joy and self-fulfillment in knowing the event he was involved with, whether it be a production sale or a national show, was as successful an event as possible and that he had done everything in his power to ensure the outcome. Based on his selfless nature and his kind soul, he was loved and cherished by so many he came in contact with over the years.

Of all his accomplishments, the one he was probably most proud of was being a grandpa. Bill was blessed to have 4 grandkids that he loved and adored. He attended any and all activities they were involved in and cherished spending time with each of them. He was a beloved grandpa who will be greatly missed.

Bill loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his family, his countless friends, the cattle industry, his MSU Spartans and the United States of America, which he proudly served in the National Guard.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, sister-in-law, Lois and brother-in-law, David. He is survived by his wife of 50 plus years, Donna; son, Blake (Kirsten) Angell of Gove, KS; daughter, Miki (Steve) Kissler of LaSalle, CO; daughter, Missy (Amy) Angell of Greeley, CO; brother, Richard (Leslie) Angell of Michigan; grandson, Tyler Kissler; granddaughter, Makayla Kissler; grandson, Seth Kissler; granddaughter, Brynnlee Angell; brother-in-law, Reg (Betty) Zimmerman of Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Barbara Zimmerman of Wisconsin; brotherin-law, Bill (Sharon) Zimmerman of Wisconsin; nephew, Nic (Shara) Angell of California; nephew, Kevin (Jenny) Angell of Michigan and numerous other brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service was held on Friday, February 4, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church in LaSalle, Colorado. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of LaSalle or to one of Bill’s favorite charities, St. Jude’s Children Hospital or The Wounded Warriors Project.

Sexing Technologies and 605 Sires Open Semen Sorting Lab

NAVASOTA, Texas — Global livestock semen sorting leader and innovator Sexing Technologies® (ST) is partnering with preeminent U.S. beef reproductive services company 605 Sires to establish a semen sorting lab at 605’s facility in Marion, South Dakota.

The lab will produce frozen sex-sorted semen for customers as well as for use in 605’s in-vitro fertilization (IVF) work. Having a sorting lab on-site is a convenient, cost-saving measure that allows 605 staff to monitor quality control of semen and embryos more closely.

“We want to create a high-quality product for our customers here in the Midwest,” said Sammi Schrag, who will manage the lab and is part of the family that launched 605 Sires in 2017.

ST’s industry-leading sex sorting process separates X chromosome (female) bearing sperm from Y chromosome (male) bearing sperm through a process called flow cytometry. This provides customers with semen that is more than 90 percent accurate for the desired gender and achieves conception rates comparable to conventional (unsorted) semen used for artificial insemination. ST, based in Navasota, Texas, operates semen sorting labs around the world. 605 Sires is a full-service semen collection center that collects, freezes and stores semen from customers’ herd sires as well as offering IVF and embryo transfer services.

For more information on 605’s service offerings or the new sorting lab, contact Sammi Schrag via email, samantha.schrag@stgen.com, or by phone, 605.925.7473.
