Teviot Valley.

The scale of sheep farming operations in the Teviot Valley more than 130 years ago is surprising. The remains of the 1870 Teviot Woolshed mark what was once the largest woolshed in the southern hemisphere. At 6480sq m it could hold more than 8000 sheep. In 1924 much of the shed was destroyed by fire, however the stone walls with arched windows remain. Nearby, at the Horseshoe Bend diggings on the banks of the Clutha River, two much smaller stone structures tell a different tale. Two gravestones lie side-by side, one for William Rigney, the other for ‘‘Somebody’s Darling’’. Legend has it in 1865 Mr

Lake Roxburgh is also good for fishing and also popular for boating, jet-skiing, and kayaking. There are walks including Bullock Track, along the river on the Town River Walk, Grovers Hill Track, Ladysmith Walk, Commissioners Walk, Horseshoe Bend and the Millennium Track. The Lake Roxburgh Walk through the gorge has views of the old Chinese miners’ rock shelters and other relics. Rigney discovered the body of a young man on the riverbank following a flood. He arranged a burial for the unknown man, erecting a headstone with the words ‘‘Somebody’s Darling Lies Buried Here’’. When Mr Rigney died in January 1912, he was buried beside the anonymous grave as requested.
