You no longer notice the incessant crow and cackle of the 24-hour rooster; you’re unflinching when passing a herd of white goats stumbling over a steep hillside or errant horses sharing the roadside alongside vehicles. You’re really fitting in when you know more people on the island than not; you and your neighbour now have more than 100 Facebook friends in common. I suppose you’re really touting your island street cred when you have a pet lizard living in your island whip; in Flinstones form you can see asphalt and gravel through the rusted-out base of your 1992 Suzuki Vitara. And you know you’re really legit when you confidently catch a hitch on anything from a scooter to a skip. This month, I’ll celebrate my birthday as an island resident. I remember, like it was yesterday, when I first moved to Tortola. I suppose I’ve figured out a few things in my time here, but that’s not to say I don’t have a long way to go. My job allows me the freedom to discover new and exciting adventures as I put the magazine together each month. I’ve tripped and traveled from Anegada to St Thomas, reviewing some of the most luxurious locales and sampling some of the finest fares in the Virgin Islands. There’s a dangerous sense of comfort and security that comes with the island life. I often think to myself: What if I never leave? I could imagine settling down with a nice little island princess on a secluded rock with a beachside view. The newly—yet sparsely—developed Scrub Island would be a prime choice, with more than a hundred of paradisiacal acres to choose from. They’ve also recently been added to the Marriot Autograph Collection, meaning that property management and marketing perks would make my life that much easier. I’d probably post up on Governor’s Point, a place where even the palm trees on postcards wish they were. Famed underwater photographer Armando Jenik knows all about framing those perfect postcard pictures. He’s been doing it for so long that I’m pretty sure he’s grown gills. I know Armando’s no longer a newbie because he spends more time underwater than above. If you’re visiting the Virgin Islands, this issue will help get you started on your adventures. Bring a copy home with you and open it once in a while to remind you that some people actually call this place home, and have given up the fast-pace, fast-talk and fast foods that define that place we call the real world. Owning a Piece of

Paradise

By Dan O’Connor

Over the past few years, Scrub Island has undergone a profound transformation and has developed a distinguishable charm and character among its niche within the plush northeasterly Virgin Islands. Most recognizably, the otherwise rugged island hosts the first new marina resort to grace the BVI’s shorelines in almost 30 years. But further to the island’s development, luxury villas—both custom and pre-designed—are now beginning to flourish along the dramatic hillsides with beachfront access. While amenities at the resort and marina act as a luxurious convenience, Scrub Island’s vast terrain acts as a lucky landowner’s private island getaway.

Anthony aboard Antiki in Sint Maarten Shipyard as he prepares to complete his intended journey. Photos by Traci O’Dea.

Time Traveler

By Traci O’Dea

Last year, I interviewed BVI resident David Hildred before and after he crossed the Atlantic Ocean on a raft with writer Anthony Smith and two other men. In addition to coverage in VIPY, the crossing received international press, including a weekly column in The Daily Telegraph titled “Four Men on a Raft.” The purpose of the rafting trip, as explained to me by David, included reestablishing rafting as a viable mode of transportation, showing that adventures have no age limits, and recreating the journey of the World War II vessel Anglo-Saxon’s jollyboat across the Atlantic to a very specific beach, Eleuthera, in the Bahamas. The raft did not reach Eleuthra on its trip across the Atlantic.

“Time isn’t a straight line. It’s all... bumpy-wumpy. There’s loads of boring stuff. Like Sundays and Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons. But now and then there are Saturdays. Big temporal tipping points when anything’s impossible.” —Doctor Who

The four men instead landed on the island of St Martin, about 700 miles from the Bahamas. I visited 86-year-old adventurer Anthony Smith on the raft Antiki at the Sint Maarten Shipyard a few Saturdays before he and his new crew were about to set off for the last leg of the voyage—completing the journey he’d originally intended to take. When I first approached the raft Antiki in the shipyard, it appeared smaller than I’d imagined it from the many photos I’d seen, but that could’ve been because it was docked beside a massive catamaran. Once aboard, while standing in the shadow of the mast made from a telephone pole, I appreciated the roominess and stability the raft. The stability should not have been a surprise as the raft basically has four hulls—the four main pipes that sit in the water—topped by fourteen cross pipes and decking on top of that. We began our chat on the deck in the morning sun but soon had to relocate inside the cabin as a dark cloud brought pellets of rain. The corrugated stainless steel cabin also defied expectations, seeming to be larger on the inside than the

14

outside, similar to Doctor Who’s TARDIS, but I don’t think Antiki’s cabin has a swimming pool within its walls. As Anthony Smith recounted his journeys, I suspected he might be the closest thing to a real Time Lord—defying linear chronology and gathering up adventures worthy of several lifetimes. Despite the many photos that I’d seen of him, Anthony’s appearance surprised me, too. He has the eyes, voice, spirit and demeanor of a 20-year-old—a mischievous 20-year old—and I further appreciated the comparisons between Anthony and the Doctor, especially the newest incarnation of the renegade time traveler. It made sense. Who else, besides a time traveler, would constantly refer to his own excursions, whether on a raft or a hot air balloon or motorbike, as “sensible things to do”? Anthony called the decision to go to St Martin instead of the Bahamas a “mutiny.” According to him, the crew had “solemnly” agreed, before the journey that they were going to the Bahamas, knowing it would add extra time and difficulty to

Earth-Sheltered Architecture

A computer-generated rendering exemplifies hillside building. Renderings by OBMI.

By Lavina Liburd, OBMI BVI Earth sheltering can be defined as the architectural practice of using earth against building walls for external thermal mass, to reduce heat loss, and to naturally preserve a steady indoor air temperature. Earth sheltering is popular today among advocates of passive solar and sustainable architecture; we can notice this practice as far back as humans have been creating their own dwellings. In fact, having the walls of a building against the earth also helps prevent heat gain from solar radiation. It does not trap heat in a building if the building is otherwise well ventilated. More importantly in the Virgin Islands, it can save costs when building on steep hillsides.

walls in the VI drain through weep holes along the face of the wall. Obviously, this method cannot be used where the retaining wall is integrated into the building. Instead, a gravel bed needs to be created behind the wall and a perforated pipe wrapped in geo-textile fabric would be placed in the center of the bed. The gravel allows ground water to flow freely into the pipe which is then emptied into a soak-away or away from the building. In addition, it is important to use bituminous or cementitious waterproofing on the wall and a drainage board against the wall to wick water quickly away from the surface towards the drainage pipe. Sheltering a building in the earth therefore has several green advantages. It can save energy while

From the Underwater Lens

Half In & Half Out

By Dan O’Connor Armando Jenik bought his first underwater housing kit in 1978 during a time when underwater photography was in its early stages. Since then, Armando has developed a body of work that needs little introduction. His love for the underwater world combined with his passion for photography allows the versed diver to share what he sees with the rest of the world. One technique Armando has mastered is half and half—or “split”—photography, which halves the dry world with the wet. “And the reason I like to connect the two is quite simply to combine both worlds—above and below,” he explained. In a recent interview, Armando shared some of his fondest half and half photographs taken over the years and lent some insight into what went into each shot.

20

VI PROPERTY & YACHT

Published by aLookingGlass Ltd.

The Bold and Beautiful Baths Armando loves shooting The Baths at Virgin Gorda—it’s his favourite place in the world to photograph. Why? Not only because of the volcanic boulders’ obvious majestic beauty overwater, but because of what occurs as they continue below water. “Underwater, the boulders make it look like a different planet altogether,” he remarked. In this photo (left), as Armando broke traditional rules and shot into the light, the sun refracted off the dark boulders above ground and the white sandy bottom and helped created a perfect contrast. “This is a place I would recommend anyone interested in half-and-half photography to begin … this place was made for split photography.” TIP: Use an ND3 gel filter and cut it in half to expose for the bright sun above and the darker underwater settings.

Serene Sailing Shooting sailing photography from the water can be particularly tricky, he explained, because the subject is moving at a particularly fast rate, and in order to capture these fleeting moments with a wide-angle lens, the photographer must be as close as possible to the boat. “I hide behind the markers, and when the boat is very close—three to five feet away—I just shoot and try to create the image and not get killed,” he said. “You have to be careful because when you use the wide angle, it looks very far. … Shooting sailing is like swimming with sharks—you don’t know if you’re going to make it or not. But if you survive you get fantastic pictures.” For this photograph (left), Armando used a 15mm lens with oceaneye housing, with a Nikon F2 and took numerous shots. TIP: Shoot until you can’t shoot anymore. It’s the best way to capture the passing moment, and with digital cameras, who cares about wasting film? Invest in a large memory card—16 GB or more.

Man’s Best Friend Armando loves shooting his best friends—his dogs. He’s particularly fond of this photo of his former dog Rocky because it captures a moment of pure, unadulterated bliss. “Dogs are the love of my life, and I always wanted to photograph and capture these special moments,” he said. “When you take a picture of a dog swimming, you don’t get to see what’s going on underwater—which is just fascinating. Look at this picture. It just makes you happy. … He’s gone, but it’s a happy picture—it give you a sense of how happy he is and how beautiful the ocean is at the same time.” TIP: Clean the dome—with Lemon Pledge for acrylic ports or Rain-X for glass ports—to get rid of unwanted water droplets. Grace on the Water By Owen Waters

The Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendevouz A combination of 28 sailing yachts and motor yachts, ranging in size from 72 to 295 feet, attended the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Virgin Gorda in its second installment in March. Participating boats made passage from all corners of the Americas, Caribbean and Europe to be there.

The classes for the sailors were separated into racing, performance, cruising and catamaran, with courses set fairly challenging in a pursuit style. During the downwind leg on the south side of Virgin Gorda towards Ginger Island, enormous, colourful spinnakers filled with 10-15 knot winds decorated the deep blue sea. When they passed the press boat for the upwind leg, the sails spilled their excess wind, sounding like helicopter blades overhead, and looking like giant, graceful birds of the sea. After three days of racing, Indio, a Wally 101, took the title from Hanuman by one point, after winning the final race on corrected time. Hanuman, a graceful J Class 138’ Royal Huisman, and winner of last year’s inaugural event, was second overall.

Indio was able to take two bullets and a second over the three days of racing whilst Hanuman took one bullet but two seconds. Event newcomer, the Perini Navi built, Philippe Briand designed 125’ sloop, P2 placed third. While sharing a drink with local watersports enthusiast and HIHO front man Andy Morrell, I asked him to describe his time as crew on P2. “It’s a bit like being in an Army platoon,” he said, laughing as he sipped his wine. “I need to go home tonight, to rest. When these guys sail, they sail hard together. And the parties, well, same thing. In for one, in for all!” The event does not hold anything back on the parties and entertainment for the racers, owners and members of the yacht club. Parties spilled out from the clubhouse onto the docks and into the yachts themselves—everything from a Mount Gay cocktail competition to a Gold Party to a tasting aboard host yacht Icon. AirportExpansion Story and photos by Dan O’Connor To build, or not to build—that is not the question. Arousing mixed reactions, the British Virgin Islands Government has made it abundantly clear that it will expand the current airport runway at Terrance B. Lettsome Airport on Beef Island. The expansive plans include the addition of more than 2,000 feet of extra landing space, allowing for the airport to facilitate direct flights from Miami and Atlanta on Boeing 747 and 700 jets. Proponents of the plan hypothesize that the expansion will encourage more travel to the territory while making the BVI more self sustaining. Opponents fear the plan exceeds the territory’s needs and will threaten the yachting industry while destroying Trellis Bay.

“Either of the two plans I was shown would devastate the ecology and economy of Trellis Bay, and one would almost certainly finish The Last Resort as a business,” he said. “The end of such an iconic Virgin Islands family-owned business after 40 years would, of course, be a big problem for us and a loss to our guests. However, in the bigger scheme of things, it could be justified if there was a greater net benefit to the rest of the VI.” As his letter continued, he failed to find a greater good either economically or ecologically. His sentiments were echoed by many concerned residents and business Particpants at the meeting rose to voice both concerns and praises to officials in charge of the expansion project.

Staying Afloat How Anegada defies a death by drowning By Shannon Gore, PhD

When Anegada was named after the Spanish word meaning “flooded” or “drowned,” the island may have looked different from the way it looks today.

Over the next 100,000 years or so, the climate became cooler, and the sea level lowered to a maximum of 120 metres below current levels, exposing the entire PR/VI platform, a time when you could actually walk to Puerto Rico from Anegada. The coral reef that formed the northeastern part of the PR/VI platform had died off and began transforming into a solid slab of limestone from years of exposure to sun, wind, rain and the many other elements of nature. Then about 20,000 years ago, sea levels in the Caribbean started rising again and eventually reached the current levels about 4,000 to 6,000 years ago. Since the sea levels started rising, a fringing coral reef along the northern side of Anegada, the patch reefs to the south, and a barrier reef to the southeast of the island formed into what is collectively known as the Horseshoe Reef and covers an area approximately 133 square kilometres. The island of Anegada today is divided into two distinct geologic formations that geographically split Anegada in half. to push sand onshore. The interior ponds on the western side of Anegada (in the Ridge Plain Formation) were once all connected to the ocean, but at least one major event caused a large amount of sand to block the northern entrances. According to the preeminent authority on tsunamis, Dr Brian Atwater and his team proved that the western Anegada ponds changed from a marine state to a hypersaline (or very salty) state sometime between 1650 and 1800, most likely from a transAtlantic tsunami that occurred after the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. This tsunami would have been capable of moving a massive amount of sand onshore to block the ponds. Instead of the tsunami completely destroying Anegada, a series of at least seven dune ridges continued to form on the northern side of the island, most likely from high energy waves from hurricanes capable of moving sand landward. Even the mangroves along the south-eastern side of the island are moving out seaward, indicating a stable shoreline. While the creation of sand dunes and continuing growth of new mangroves show how resilient the island really is to natural events,

Though the regatta remains light-hearted in nature, the race does ignite a competitive streak in some. “One racer was the boat Starry Night, which has three professionals on board with a master strategist,” Habib remarked, adding that boats were handicapped in accordance to size and model. Three days of racing followed the Cane Garden Bay gathering, leading Oysters first to Virgin Gorda, where berthing had been reserved at North Sound’s Bitter End Yacht Club. The following day, competitors embarked on a 25-mile course around Virgin Gorda before eventually darting into the prestigious Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Marina, also in the North Sound. The final day of racing concluded at Nanny Cay, where the regatta party settled in style with prize giving, dinner and dancing. The races were divided into two classes. The overall winners were Starry

Night, an Oyster 82 in Class 1, and Scarlet, an Oyster LW48 in Class 2. Next year, on January 6, the Oyster World Rally commences from Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua, where the Oyster family will reunite, no doubt with more fables of their sea adventures as they prepare to race around the world. PY

world. I like the idea of Alice in Wonderland. I’m in love with the idea of nonsense.” Kishma, who works for the BVI Government as a draftsperson and has a background in architecture, said she brings these elements into her creative works. The most recent painting she sold depicts a scene of an otherworldly treehouse sculpted from brickwork. “Painting for me is another form of expressing myself,” said Kishma, cracking a smile. “I’m not the average person you’ll meet from the BVI. I’m a little weird.” Through art, she said, she can express herself without being judged. Since attending the University of Emory in Atlanta to pursue a degree in architecture, she said she has returned with a sense of purpose through artistic expression. “Architecture is where science meets art,” she said. Growing up on Tortola but having since moved to New York City, Ana-Marie said she was inspired heavily by her father, who is a pencil portraiture artist. While his drive and passion were admirable, she said she was moved to bring colour and motion into her work. So, she packed away the pencils and found herself immersed in the world of paint. Her ethereal works now line the walls of Kishma’s apartment while she continues her business studies in New York City. She doesn’t limit herself to canvas, though, having recently participated in a competition at Nutmeg Designs where she utilized salvaged wood to create a unique furniture piece. Ana-Marie also branches out from the traditional canvas, most recently using old tires as her drawing board. Together, the two work off of each other’s creative motivation to push

and more toward the abstract. The artists most recently collaborated at Sugar Works on Tortola, and also have five pieces each hanging at the BVI London Office, next to famed musician and painter Quito Rymer’s. Acknowledging the work of local talents like Ruben Vanterpool and Joseph Hodge, the girls said they hope to influence others that are looking for unique and unusual forms of expression. “Most people, when they think of art here in the Virgin Islands, they think of Mr Vanterpool and Hodge—those beautiful landscapes and realism,” said Kishma. “But I want to show them that the BVI can be different—weird and strange. That’s the definition behind our work.” PY

in the BVI while discouraging speculation in real estate and protecting the heritage of the people of the BVI. The prospective purchaser must provide evidence of identity, means, and character along with an appraisal and the agreement for sale, and certain other property details. If you intend to rent the property while it is not in use, this will have to be specifically stated in the licence and a trade licence for property rental obtained. The landholding licence is personal to the holder and applies only to the specific property mentioned within it. A separate licence is needed for each property. All land is registered in a central Land Registry, which reflects the details and history of ownership, and other interests in the land such as mortgages (called charges), leases, and easements. Evidence of title is the land register for each property. Title is government guaranteed, with a fund to compensate for any loss caused by fraud or manifest error. Title insurance is therefore not used. An instrument of transfer in the standard form must be registered to effect ownership changes. Documentary proof of ownership is the land register for the particular parcel in respect of the property purchased. The original is held in a register book at the Land Registry, but a certified copy can be obtained. An owner should also have a registry stamped original or certified copy of the Transfer Instrument passing title from vendor to purchaser.

Life too taxing? The BVI provides a break There is no capital gains tax, income tax or inheritance tax. There is a single tax on acquisition of the property which is a stamp duty 12% of its market value (5% for transfers otherwise than on sale), or 1.5% stamp duty on acquisition of a lease of the property. However, there are several stamp duty exemptions for close transfers, as set out in the introduction. There is an annual property tax comprised of 2 elements: land tax ($50 for the first half-acre or $150.00 for the first acre or part thereof in excess of half an acre, and $50.00 for each additional acre or part thereof), and house tax 1.5% of the value of the buildings, assessed based on size and use. There are no other property taxes. In addition, the current US federal gift tax exclusion complements the BVI stamp duty exemptions for close transfers, making 2012 an ideal time for property owners to transfer properties to their spouse, children or grandchildren, or into trust for those individuals. Message on Board Story and photos by Dan O’Connor

“Hi, I’m Connor Nelson from Jakarta, Indonesia,” read a letter crammed in a wine bottle bobbing just off the coast of Great Tobago. “If you find this bottle, please tell me where you found it. Thanks!” The inquisitive 10-year-old’s message was echoed by his seven-year-old sister, Haley, who wrote, “If you find this bottle, please listen to what my brother said.” Not only did Cane Garden Bay resident Charles Kirchmier listen, he became inspired.

The bottle and message that inspired Charles to build his toy boats.

The floating message in a bottle found Charles as he was enjoying a day out on his fishing boat. The random occurrence surprised him, but it also sparked an interest in the age-old tradition of bottle messaging. “I thought to myself, ‘How cool,’” he said during an interview on Cane Garden Bay beach, as we sat at the happy table outside The Elm restaurant. “I was inspired by these kids, but I wanted to do something neat on my own—something that would be different than the standard message in a bottle; so, I made this boat and put the message here on top of it.”

The sails are made from scrap sail material and attached with fishing wire. After meticulous engineering, and numerous test runs, Charles is confident that his model sailboat will stand up against strong currents and rough weather. “We’ve had it out right here in [Cane Garden Bay] and it actually does everything it’s supposed to do,” he said. “And stands up even after getting pounded in the surf. And when it gets in the wind, it actually keels over to the side; when it gets too far keeled over, the sail
