Bankers knock up win Brian Mollet
A chilly breeze whipped across Lomath Oval, the sky a low-hanging sheet of lead and the famous turf was damp and greasy as last night’s kebab; but the semi-civilised hill folk of Main Arm and Left Bank were out in force for the Nick Shand Memorial cricket series, hardened as they are by years of honest toil in the bush and the certainty that if they hang around home too long on a Sunday they will be compelled to do something constructive. Scruff called correctly and was happy to ask the Armers to bat in the morning murk. Openers Greg-O and Adeha kept out the new ball and had 30 on the board in the 10th over when the skies erupted. When play resumed the ball was skidding and raising little splashes from the pitch and the turf smothered groundballs like a hungry sea anemone. Leon, Phil, Guy and Zac all gave away less than an austerity budget with the soapy ball and pressure in the field saw a couple of runouts as
the Armers were as desperate to score as cashed-up kids on their way to Splendour. Morgan and Joff gave Adeha (30 no) support but late scalps to Blake and Eli saw the Main Arm batsmen as constricted as a lead singer’s leather pants, the final score a scrappy 115. After lunch things dried up a bit but it was never going to be easy to chase on what was never a batsman’s day. Carl, Morgan and Greg-O took early wickets and things were looking as shonky as a subsidised home insulation job for the Bankers. Eli (30 no) started well and when skipper Scruff (30 no) joined him at the crease the Bankers began to canter away with the game. Brian found more nicks than you would find at a Greek wedding but finished wicketless as the Bankers found their feet and knocked up the winning runs with three and a half overs left. Next week the coastal cricket fraternity brings its best to Mullumbimby as the Byron Full Tossers take on the Suffolk Swingers.
Byron on course for finals Peter Griffin
Byron Bay rugby remain on course for the First Grade semifinals after a professional 26–7 win against Southern Cross University on Wednesday. With four rounds to play the Bay has a five-point advantage over fifth-placed Ballina, who meet top four candidates Lismore and Lennox Head on the bounce. The day was not without drama as Byron travelled with only 16 players following a match-day injury to prop Wal Andrews. Captain and expectant father Pete Shaw was sidelined along with a further six players who were either injured or interstate. With their season on the line, Byron’s stocks were given a last-minute boost when Josh Smith returned to the team. The versatile Smith took a
needle to mask the pain of a ruptured shoulder and came in to fill the jersey of the unavailable Tom Homer. Just as courageous was Harry Nutall. The star Englishman is probably the best open side flanker in the competition but he has put the team first to play most of the year in the centres. Against the student’s massive pack he put his hand up to play prop, conceding more than 30 kilos to his opposite number. Byron Bay players seem to relish night-time activities and on a crisp, cool night the visitors turned up the heat from the first whistle. The full report of this game will be in tomorrow’s edition of Echonetdaily – www.echonetdaily.net.au. The Bay looks to secure points this Saturday at home against Casino from 3.30pm
