La Galerie Lefebvre et Fils est fière de présenter à nouveau un ensemble de céramiques d’Ettore Sottsass.

Connu pour avoir créé le mouvement Memphis en 1981, Ettore Sottsass est devenu le modèle international de l’antimodernisme. L’éclectisme des styles qu’il emploie, son ton plein d’humour, voire d’ironie, caractérisent son œuvre. Ses motifs et couleurs dégagent une sensibilité immédiate.

Considéré comme l’un des designers les plus importants du xxe siècle, Ettore Sottsass est présent dans les collections des plus grands musées du monde entier, notamment au MoMA de New York et au Centre Pompidou à Paris.

Déjà en 2010, nous avions eu le plaisir d’exposer son travail, dans une exposition consacrée à ses porcelaines de Sèvres. Aujourd’hui, nous présentons dix pièces uniques en céramique datant de 2002.

Issus d’un ensemble de vingt-cinq œuvres, ces travaux réalisés en terre cuite avec la célèbre maison Gatti de Faenza ont été exposés en 2003 au MAXXI de Rome, avec la collaboration du célèbre artiste Enzo Cucchi, créateur du mouvement de la Trans-avant-garde italienne.

Figurant parmi les dernières créations d’Ettore Sottsass, ces pièces, qui sont montrées pour la première fois en France, sont les seules disponibles à la vente. C’est pour nous un honneur tout particulier que de pouvoir faire découvrir ces œuvres originales et uniques.

J’ai demandé à Ivan Mietton, qui partage mon attachement à cet artiste, de nous faire part dans ces pages de sa rencontre avec Ettore Sottsass, qu’il a eu le privilège de côtoyer à Milan.

The Galerie Lefebvre et Fils is proud to present, for the second time, a collection of ceramics

by Ettore Sottsass.

Known for his founding of the Memphis Group in 1981, Ettore Sottsass has become an international role model for the anti-modernist movement. His work is characterized by the eclectic nature of the styles he uses and his warm humour, verging on the ironic.

His designs and colours instantly convey a rare sense of emotional intelligence.

As Ettore Sottsass is viewed as one of the 20th century’s most important designers, his works may be seen in the world’s greatest art galleries, notably in New York’s MoMA and the Centre Pompidou, Paris.

We were lucky enough to be able to showcase a selection of his art in a 2010 exhibition devoted to his work in Sèvres porcelain. The current exhibition features ten one-off ceramic pieces dating from 2002.

Taken from a series of twenty five works, these pieces in terracotta were created in partnership with the famous Faenza pottery manufacturer, Ceramica Gatti. They were exhibited in 2003 at Rome’s MAXXI contemporary art gallery, in partnership with the famous artist Enzo Cucchi, founder of the Italian Transavantgarde movement.

These works are amongst the very last to have been created by Ettore Sottsass. Shown for the first time in France, they are the only pieces that are for sale. It is a very great honour for us to be able to introduce these original, quite unique works to a wider public.

I have kindly asked Ivan Mietton, who had the privilege to meet with Ettore Sottsass in Milan, and shares my attachment to this artist, to recount the story of his acquaintance with the designer in the following pages.

La Galerie Lefebvre et Fils est sans doute la plus fondée pour présenter cette sélection de pièces exceptionnelles de la collection “Reperti del futuro” d’Ettore Sottsass.

“Vous connaissez Sottsass ?“ C’est par cette question que débuta ma relation avec Ettore Sottsass.

Marie-Laure Jousset, alors conservateur en chef du service Design au Centre Pompidou, recherchait un collaborateur pour cataloguer les archives du designer portant sur vingt ans de sa collaboration avec la firme italienne Olivetti. Après un rapide entretien, le verdict tomba : “Vous partez mercredi.“ Ma rencontre avec “l’architetto” à Milan fut décisive.

Je comprenais au fil des jours pourquoi il était “Ettore Sottsass”. Évidemment l’importance de son travail dans l’histoire de l’art du xxe siècle m’a impressionné mais c’est surtout son charisme qui m’a marqué alors. Nous avons fait quelques mois plus tard une exposition (Ettore Sottsass, 20 ans de design pour Olivetti) pour le remercier du don de ses archives au Musée national d’Art moderne

et il est très vite devenu mon designer de prédilection.

Quelques années plus tard, au cours de mes recherches sur son travail, j’ai appris l’existence d’une exposition de ses céramiques présentées à Rome en 2003 avec Enzo Cucchi.

Intitulé “Reperti del futuro” (Les vestiges du futur), cet ensemble de céramiques, présenté ici à la Galerie Lefebvre et Fils, témoigne d’une créativité de l’artiste sans cesse renouvelée. Ces pièces démontrent aussi la passion de Sottsass pour le passé, l’Antiquité, les civilisations disparues et reprennent une thématique qui lui est chère : la vision diachronique du temps.

Avec ces “Rovine”, il nous propose, dans une sorte d’archéologie du futur, sa vision de ce qui restera de notre civilisation.

Le choix du céramiste de Faenza, Gatti, pour réaliser ses œuvres s’est imposé naturellement. Ettore Sottsass désirait un artisan à la forte sensibilité et travaillant la matière “a mano”. C’est cette dernière qui, façonnée de manière spontanée, donne vie à des pièces aux accents primitifs et archaïques connectant le passé avec le futur. Lien également souligné avec l’emploi simultané de couleurs naturelles (la terre cuite laissée nue) et artificielles (le fluorescent).

En créant des “ruines”, Ettore Sottsass porte un regard amusé, presque un peu moqueur, sur la notion de temps et sur la notion d’œuvre d’art.

“Do you know much about Sottsass?”

This question was the start of my acquaintance with Ettore Sottsass.

Marie-Laure Jousset, at that time Chief Curator of the Centre Pompidou’s Design collection, was looking for someone to catalogue the designer’s archives relating to his 20 year-old partnership with Italian firm Olivetti. After a quick interview the verdict came: “You leave on Wednesday.”

My encounter with “l’architetto” in Milan was a revelation. As the days went by, I understood what made “Ettore Sottsass” the man that he was.

Obviously the significance of his work in the history of 20th century art made a great impression on me, but above all it was the force of his personality that struck me at the time. Several months later we put on an exhibition “Ettore Sottsass, 20 ans de design pour Olivetti” (Ettore Sottsass and Olivetti, 20 years of design) to thank him for the gift of his archives

to the Musée National d’Art Moderne and he very quickly became my favourite designer.

A few years later, as I was researching his work, I learnt of an exhibition of his ceramics that had been put on in Rome in 2003 in partnership with Enzo Cucchi. Called “Reperti del futuro” (The remains of the future) this collection of ceramic pieces, now presented at the Galerie Lefebvre et Fils, bears witness to an artistic creativity that is forever being recast and renewed. These works also demonstrate Sottsass’ passion for the past, Antiquity and lost civilisations, as well as taking another look at a topic that was close to his heart: historical perspectives of time.

With these “Rovine”, he offers us – through a kind of archaeology of the future – his vision of what will remain of our civilisation once it is gone.

The Faenza-based “Gatti” ceramics factory was the obvious candidate for the creation of his pieces.

Ettore Sottsass was looking for a craftsperson with a highly-developed artistic sensibility who would work the raw materials “a mano”. This technique, when employed with spontaneity, breathes life into pieces that have more than a touch of the primitive and archaic about them, bridging the gap between past and future. This connection is also underlined by the simultaneous use of natural (unpainted terracotta) and artificial colours (fluorescent shades).

By creating “ruins”, Ettore Sottsass casts an amused, almost slightly mocking eye over the concept of time and our vision of what constitutes a work of art.

Né en 1917 en Autriche d’un père italien et d’une mère autrichienne, Ettore Sottsass rejoint dès le plus jeune âge l’Italie, berceau familial.

Encouragé par son père architecte, qui fut luimême l’élève d’Otto Wagner, il entreprend des études d’architecture au Politecnico de Turin où il obtient son diplôme en 1939. Il se positionne très tôt dans un rapport intellectuel et métaphysique à la création, influencé par Luigi Spazzapan, artiste et ami, qui apporte un contrepoint à sa formation académique.

Après le traumatisme de la guerre, Ettore Sottsass s’installe à Milan et participe à l’aventure de la reconstruction ainsi qu’aux programmes de logements sociaux. Mais il se heurte rapidement aux contraintes matérielles et aux orientations politiques de l’époque, préoccupée d’efficacité. Persuadé que l’architecture ne peut se décréter d’en haut, il arrête pour un temps de l’exercer. Il confiera plus tard que pour être architecte, il faut être calme, avoir de la maturité et une sensibilité à la vie. À défaut de réaliser l’architecture dont il rêve, il préfère concevoir des objets architecturés.

Il fonde alors en 1947 son agence de design à Milan, ville qu’il ne quittera plus. Grâce à sa curiosité, ce touche-à-tout infatigable et doué s’oriente tant vers la peinture que le graphisme, la création de meubles, de bijoux et de céramiques ; ces pratiques se nourrissant l’une l’autre selon le principe d’une “fertilisation croisée“.

Cette époque est, pour lui, celle des premières expérimentations où il va définir sa polyvalence.

En 1956, sa rencontre avec Adriano Olivetti est providentielle et marque le début d’une relation paisible et durable avec l’entreprise italienne pour laquelle il devient designer-consultant (jusqu’en 1980). À ce titre il participe à la création d’Elea 9003, premier ordinateur italien qu’il traite comme un “paysage électronique” et pour lequel il reçoit le Compasso d’Oro en 1959. Puis il conçoit, entre autres, les machines à écrire Tekne 3, Praxis 48 et Valentine ainsi qu’un système de mobilier de bureau, Synthesis 45. Au début des années 60, il collabore en tant que directeur artistique avec Poltronova, éditeur de mobilier contemporain.

Durant cette période, deux voyages sont décisifs et fondateurs pour la suite de son travail.

En 1961, il découvre l’Inde où les couleurs, les modes de vie et le rapport à la mort bouleversent sa vision du monde. En 1962, il se rend aux ÉtatsUnis pour se faire soigner d’une grave maladie : installé en Californie, il y découvre le Pop Art qui interroge la société de consommation et ses objets et, grâce à sa femme Fernanda Pivano (Nanda), traductrice des auteurs de la “contreculture“ américaine, il rencontre les poètes et écrivains rebelles de la beat generation en quête d’une nouvelle spiritualité.

De ces expériences, tant mentales que physiques – son “voyage matriciel“ en Inde et sa guérison – naissent notamment les séries des Céramiques des ténèbres (1963) et des Céramiques des lumières (1964). De ces chocs culturels simultanés, il en vient à reconsidérer l’aspect social et politique de la production des objets et du design, ce qui le place dans une complicité naturelle avec l’avant-garde italienne, véritable creuset de revendications. Actif au sein des mouvements radicaux de l’Anti-design, il participe en 1972 à l’exposition qui fera date, Italy: The New Domestic Landscape, organisée par le musée d’Art moderne de New York (MoMA).

Après une brève collaboration en 1979 avec le groupe Alchimia et son fondateur Alessandro Mendini, il fonde en 1981, à l’âge de 64 ans, le groupe Memphis et la société Sottsass Associati.

Born in Austria in 1917 of an Italian father and an Austrian mother, Ettore Sottsass was brought up in Italy, his family’s ancestral home. Encouraged by his architect father, who studied under Otto Wagner, he studied architecture at the Turin Politecnico, graduating in 1939. Very rapidly he developed an intellectual and metaphysical approach to the creative act, influenced by artist and friend Luigi Spazzapan, who provided a contrasting yet complementary perspective to add to his academic training.

After the horrors of the war, Ettore Sottsass settled in Milan and took part in the great program of post-war rebuilding and the creation of social housing schemes. However, he was soon confronted by budget restrictions and the prevailing political climate, which prized “efficiency” above all else. Being convinced that architecture was not something that could be imposed in a top-down fashion, he temporarily abandoned the profession. Later on he would note that to be an architect one had to be of a calm temperament, mature and possessed of a keen sense of the key facets of life and living. Unable to develop the architectural projects of which he dreamt, he decided to design “architectural objects”. In 1947 he founded his own design studio in Milan, the city in which he was to reside for the rest of his life. Spurred on by a spirit of curiosity, this indefatigable and gifted man of many parts was attracted by painting, graphic design, furniture, jewellery and ceramic objects in equal measure. These artistic expressions inspired and were inspired by each other in turn in a kind of process of “cross-fertilization”. For Sottsass, this was a time for experimenting, a time in which the fruit of his multiple talents began to take on clearly defined shape and direction.

His providential meeting in 1956 with Adriano Olivetti marked the beginning of a harmonious and enduring relationship with the Italian company where he held the post of Chief Consultant Designer (until 1980). In this capacity he was involved in creating Elea 9003, the first Italian mainframe computer, which he approached from the perspective of an “electronic landscape” and for which he received the Compasso d’Oro

industrial design award in 1959. Later he was also to design the Tekne 3, Praxis 48 and Valentine typewriters, as well as an office furniture system, Synthesis 45. At the beginning of the 1960s he took on the position of Art Director at Poltronova, a contemporary furniture designer.

During this time he undertook two journeys that were to have a profound influence on his subsequent work. In 1961 he discovered India.

His vision of the world was turned upside down by its colours, lifestyles and attitudes towards death. In 1962 he travelled to the United States to receive treatment for a serious illness: while living in California, he came across Pop art, which questioned the assumptions of the consumer society and its design/artistic objects. Moreover, thanks to his wife, Fernanda Pivano (Nanda), who translated the writers of the American “counterculture”, he encountered the maverick poets and writers of the beat generation and their thirst for a new kind of spirituality.

These experiences, which impacted on both mind and body, his “journey back to the source of things” to India and his physical recovery, gave birth to the important series of ceramics, “the ceramics of darkness” (1963) and “the ceramics of light” (1964). These twin cultural clashes made him see the social and political aspects of the manufacture and design of consumer/art objects in a new light, making him naturally sympathetic to the revolutionary vision of the Italian avantgarde movement. He played an active role in the radical Anti-design scene, and took part in a landmark exhibition, Italy: The New Domestic Landscape, organized by New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1972.

A brief partnership in 1979 with the Alchimia group and group founder Alessandro Mendini was followed by the creation in 1981 —at the age of 64— of both the Memphis group and the design agency Sottsass Associati.
