PERFORMANCE REPORT

Executive Director Spotlight:

DeeDee Dunda, Queen Chairman

By Kennady Johnson

D

– ARIAT Performance Reporter

eeDee Dunda, a lifelong native of Odessa, Texas married into the sport of rodeo when she said “I do” to her husband Gary 25 years ago. Gary competed in bareback riding and also his strong suit, bull riding. Their son, Wrangler Dunda (24), followed in the footsteps of his father when he was old enough to start riding and rodeoing. During Wrangler’s high school rodeo career he claimed the titles of Region II Champion Bull Rider and Champion Bareback Rider. He

was also 2X AJRA Bull Riding Champion, 2X back to back YBR World Champion, 4X Texas JBR State Champion and National JBRA Champion. But, his success didn’t stop at the youth level, he is a 3X CBR Finals qualifier where two of those years he finished in the top 5. When DeeDee isn’t following her son on the rodeo trail she keeps herself busy volunteering her time to different organizations. She is a state director for Texas Christian Junior Bull Rider, which is a rapidly growing association, and on multiple boards and committees for the SandHills Stock Show and Rodeo in Odessa, Texas. In the little time she has for herself, she enjoys jewelry making, shopping and spending time with family and friends. DeeDee first became involved with the THSRA when Wrangler joined his freshman year of high school. She loves that rodeo creates such strong lifelong bonds. She says, “You want everyone else to cover their bull just as much as you want your own kid to.” She wants to see the sport and industry of rodeo grow and without a doubt she knows rodeo is in good hands with the youth we have right now. Along with her love for bull riding, she also has a passion for the queen’s contests. DeeDee understands what a great opportunity for young women this program is and that’s why she enjoys being the queen director. She says, “It opens doors and creates lifelong relationships and friendships you’d never think possible.” She wants to encourage any girl grades 6th-11th to look into pursuing the titles of Miss TJHRA and Miss THSRA. DeeDee is more than willing to get you all the information you need and direct you to people that can help you make your queen dream a reality. She also invites you to compete for your region queen title December 20th in Andrews, Texas. This will be a laid back version of the state contest with no pressure and great learning opportunities.

The start. During the short summer break in which contestants are not participating in any high school rodeo activity, the raelyn hill majority of them choose to continue sharpening their skills to make sure they are ready for the next season. As to be expected, contestants strive to have an even better season than they have in the past years. It is an unstoppable goal that rodeo competitors push themselves to reach each and every year. Contestants such as Michael Mendoza, who will compete in the team roping this year, have been in the practice pen all summer working to better themselves for this year’s rodeo season. “This year I am going in with the mindset and desire to be the number one team roper, and I will trust that God will be helping me all the way,” Michael says. Along with Mendoza, several other competitors are going into this rodeo season with extremely high goals set and will settle for nothing less than to achieve them. Sage Good, a junior who will also compete in the team roping this year, says he expects him and his partner, Region II members Kade Cotton, Sidney Stewart and Sage Good receiving awards Tyler West, to catch a good percentage of their steers. region at the end of the year, make three good runs at the state finals, and advance to the national finals competition. Although all the contestants in the region will be working as hard as possible to have a good rodeo season and advance to the state finals, there are a few in particular who will want to finish the season off well even more so than most. The seniors of Region II want nothing more than to end with a ‘bang’ and be able to finish their final year of high school rodeo by achieving each and every one of the goals they have previously set. In order for these special contestants to be successful in their final year, they need to have a slightly different mindset than the rest of the contestants. One student in particular, Raelyn Hill, says that she is preparing a little differently than she has in the past. “I plan to work harder than I ever have before in order to prove to myself all that I can do,” she states. “Since I don’t plan to college rodeo, I have nothing to lose by giving it my all and not playing it safe.” All of the contestants in the region are going to bring the heat as the new season kicks off to a start in less than a month, and each of them will hope and pray that they have worked hard enough to be successful in the sport they are so passionate about. Whether it be in roping, barrel racing, or bull riding, contestants will strive to be the absolute best they can be, and if the sport of rodeo teaches athletes anything at all, it is that you never give up no matter what the costs may be. Losing valuable time with friends over the summer is no problem for rodeo competitors, as they have bigger and better obstacles to tackle, goals to reach, and championships to win.

PERFORMANCE REPORT

A Well-Oiled Machine

By MCKENZIE RAY– ARIAT Performance Reporter

I

like to think of high school rodeos as a well oiled machine. As with any machine, there are more than a few different parts that make up the whole, and it's the same in any Region of the THSRA. There are the contestants, the parents, the volunteers, etcetera. All of them come together to make it the best possible experience for everyone involved. Then there are the Board Members, who are arguably the most important people to the Region during the year (Besides the contestants, of course!). But most of all, It's the State Directors, who carry on the tradition

chad folmar

every year of representing Region IV at the Texas High School Finals Rodeo. Chad Folmar is a new member on the board this year, and will spend his time directing the Barrel Racing and Pole Bending. He and his wife Holly live in Sulphur Springs, Texas, with their two children, Carson Hicks and Carson Folmar, who both compete in Region IV. Chad didn't compete in the THSRA, but he and his wife decided early on that they would give their children the opportunity to compete in high school rodeo. "We just decided that, that's kind of where we wanted to go with our kids, and both of them really enjoyed it." He said, when asked how he got involved in the THSRA. Chad joined the board because, "I just wanted, as a parent, to be able to help in any way that I could. Not only for my own kids, but to the other members as well." A sentiment that's shared by many of the other board members and volunteers in Region IV. And when it comes to the rodeos themselves, his favorite thing about them is, "The competition. I like to see all the kids competeing together, making friends and memories that will last them a lifetime." Chads' advice to the members and parents in Region IV? "I think you obviously want your children to do good, but you've got to have fun. Just have fun, try hard, and work for it. I think that's how you'll have the best experience, whether you're at a rodeo or not." Chuck Sinks has been on the board for 9 years, and is the Vice President of Region IV, he's on the Executive Board of Jr. High, as well as being on the State Board of High School. He and his wife Sally live in Rockwall, Texas, with their three children, Whitney, Lacy, and Chase, all of which competed or still compete in the THSRA. Chuck got involved with high school rodeo in 2004, "Because my oldest, Whitney, was doing really good in barrels and all of our friends were suggesting that we try it out." Whitney was a freshman at the time. Chuck himself didn't compete in high bill & tricia chinners school rodeo, but his favorite thing about it

is, "Watching all of the competitors help each other, and the fact that you get to spend a lot of quality time with your family and good people who still say a prayer and sing the national anthem at the start of rodeos." His vision for high school rodeo in the next 5 years? "I would like to see high school rodeo continue to grow on a yearly basis, to conserve the heritage and our history. I feel that it's the best sport that there is." chuck sinks Bill Chinners has been a member of the Region IV board for five years, and a member of the State board for four. He joined the board because, "The rodeos are produced by volunteers, we all have to do our part." He'll be directing the Roughstock events this year in Region IV. Bill and his wife Tricia live in Van Alstyne, Texas with their four children, Jonathan, Megan, Morgan, and Sarah. Sarah, Megan, and Morgan all comepete in high school rodeo. Bill never had the opportunity to compete in high school rodeo, but got involved through the youth rodeos where his children competed, "It was the perfect step up for us." He said, of the THSRA. His advice to the parents and members of Region IV? "Like an old friend once told me, 'Don't let your highs get you too high, or your lows get you too low."

PERFORMANCE REPORT

Ready to Show What They Are Made Of! I

By CIERRA GOODE

– ARIAT Performance Reporter

t’s that time of year again to get ready for region rodeos. Contestants here at region six are more ready than ever. With the new season coming up, every contestant is preparing theirselves to be the best. With their hopes running high, every contestant is chasing their hopes to make it to state finals. Region six is full of tough competition and is ready to show what the region is made of. With the competition being as tough as it is every contestant works hard at it every day to make sure they make it to the state finals. Senior Sydney Huff said, “This year, being my senior year I’ve been working my butt off for this rodeo season! I’ve been practicing goat tying non- stop and working my horse through poles and barrels as much as I can. I’m covered in bruises and sore, but I know that it’s all going to pay off when that clock starts running.” She also said, “My goal, like everyone else’s is to make it to Abilene. It’s a big year, I’m going from one event

to all- around and it’s my last year in THSRA. I really want this year to count and I’ve been working hard to make sure it does.” Not only does senior Sydney Huff have hopes of having a great rodeo season but, freshmen Calli Montague does also. Calli says, “To get ready for this rodeo season I practice every day. I have to rope the dummy, slow work my speed horses, and rope calves and steers as much as I can I’m really trying to focus on my mental game and consistency. This year my goal is to make calli montague it to state in at least three events. Along with that, I want to try to stay consistent in all my events during region rodeos, so I can give myself a chance to go to Abilene. Being a freshman, I know the competition will be tougher in high school. There are more people to compete against as well, which is a little scary but, I know I can handle it.” Another contestant that is hoping to have awesome rodeo season, is senior Cheyenne Epps. She said “To get ready for this sydney huff rodeo season I have been hauling my four year old roping horse, Tator, all summer trying to get her seasoned and ready for this rodeo season. As I have been hauling Tator all summer I have recently found out that Tator also likes the poles, so I will be running her in the poles as well this year. At the beginning of summer I went to go stay at my sister Jennifer’s house to help her and her husband with riding colts. One of the colts I got to ride this summer is their four year old Oprah. Oprah and I started off with a rocky start but, we have really come a long way. I’m super excited that I will have the opportunity to run her in the barrels this year. cheyenne epps If we weren’t hauling to a rodeo then we were hauling to a local jackpot. Hauling these colts has not only helped them out but, has also helped my riding improve. Jennifer and Robbie have hauled me a lot this summer and helped me get to the point that I am now. My goals for my senior year are to go in with my mind set and ready to rodeo. For my final year of high school rodeo I will be competing in barrels, poles, goat tying, and breakaway. My goals for this season are to make it to state in the top three in breakaway and to be in the top five in the poles and barrels. I will also be applying for some amazing colleges this year with high hopes of being accepted to one of them.” For most contestants it will be their last first high school rodeo, while for others it will be their first high school rodeo. With the new season right around the corner many contestants will be preparing their selves everyday to get ready for the up- coming rodeo season. As the rodeo season is getting closer many have started thinking about what they are going to do to have hopeful rodeo season. Not only are these three competitive contestants ready to start and compete in region rodeos however, all of region six is ready to have the best rodeo season yet.

Rodeo Beginnings

By SKYLER

STONE – ARIAT Performance Reporter

verybody has to start somewhere. For several Region 7 members it has been Fort Bend County Youth Rodeo Association. FBCYRA has raised up many rodeo kids including past, present, and future World Champions.

Out of recent members of Region 7 there are several with Fort Bend roots. These include Savannah Cox, Haley Phillips, Addy Alucema, Lindsay McAnally, Reid Halbert, Blake Geise, Dillon Gonzales, Callum Parnell, Jasmine Humphrey, Lauren Bane, Lexi Gutfranski, Julian Fontenot, Kay Jay Uresti, and me, Skyler Stone. There are possibly others that I may have overlooked. Out of these 13 kids, 4 of them have qualified for State for 2013-1014 and several of them were on the edge of making that qualification. FBCYRA has turned out National qualifiers as well. Most recently Reid Halbert, Blake Geise and Lauren Bane are on that list. FBCYRA has done a lot for all of us. We have all grown up together; we all look up to each other and support each other in many ways. There is a true sense of family and support among its members. I am sure other Region 7 members got their start somewhere with youth rodeo associations. Youth rodeos have been the start to many kid’s rodeo careers. They have built us into the person we are today. Not only have youth rodeos built us into the person we are today but they have led us to meet new people, build friendships and learn new things. It is cool to have all the younger kids look up to us and for us to be able to help them out; whether it is lending them a horse, helping them into the alley or box, or just giving them some pointers. The biggest part of youth rodeos is the support of our families. Our families help haul us, feed us, make sure we have all our supplies, tack, feed, and personal belongings, not to mention being our number 1 fans. Families are there cheering us on, videoing our runs, celebrating our victories and defeats. Our parents have been and will always be a big part of our lives and rodeo careers. They are the true “Rodeo Beginnings”. It took them seeing our desire to rodeo and buying us that first horse so that we could follow our dream. If it were not for them we wouldn’t be where we are today. Never forget your beginnings for they help guide you to your future.

Getting Ready for the New Season!

By Montana

S

ummer is undoubtedly the best time of the year for most people. You can travel, tan, and most importantly spend quality time with friends and family. But most of us rodeo kids will be spending the summer getting ready for the new season. We've gotta keep our horses, and ourselves, in shape for the next year. Katie Woodin, a senior that competes in barrels, poles, goat tying, and breakaway roping, said "I've spent my summer hauling to jackpots to

get my barrel and pole horse seasoned. I've also been tying goats and roping the dummy whenever I've had time." Brett Garza, a junior who competes in bull riding, said he prepares by looking over his videos too see what he did wrong and correcting those mistakes in the practice pin. He also watches videos of professional bull riders and takes tips from them. Brett plans to stay healthy and focused on his goal now and during the season. katie woodin The new rodeo season also brings in new competitors... the freshman! Heart, dedication, and the love to get on her horse everyday is what gets freshman Alex Rabalais excited for her first year in THSRA. I hope everyone has had a great summer full of good times and practice. I can't wait to see all of y'all at our first rodeo September 13th!

The topics ranged from State, Stock, Assigning student and adult directors, to what the schedule will be for the year! Of course our Student Directors were there as well which include, Jake HughesPresident, Megan Wright- Vice President, Hailey Bruening- Secretary, and as well as myself! Us young adults talked among ourselves as well and discussed future fundraisers and current topics. We are so excited for our first rodeo which will be held in Crockett, Texas on September 7th!! I personally can't wait to meet all my new friends and see the old ones! Good luck to all Region 9 competitors as well as all the other regions! Go out and make a difference in your region and community! But most of all, HAVE FUN!

THSRA Board Meeting Kicks Off New Year

S

aturday, August 9th THSRA officially kicked off the new season with their annual August Board Meeting. A big thank you to Mesquite Rodeo for letting us use their facility. A few things were reviewed and decided. The first decision that was to be made referred to the cutting.

by McKenna Greene, THSRA Vice President

After discussion and going over the details, the board voted that cutting will still count for all around points within all ten regions. We also discussed the newest THSRA event, reigning cow horse, on Saturday morning. We had a guest speaker, Jay Winborn, from the NRCHA to help with any questions that we had and give us the lay out of how

to host the competitions. If anyone is interested in reigning cow horse or has questions, details and an instruction video can be found on the THSRA website home page. Once again we would like to send a big thanks to Mesquite Rodeo for opening up their town and facility to us. We had a great first meeting and I cannot wait to see what this rodeo season has in store.

JUNIOR HIGH

Texas Junior High Rodeo Association News Letter from the TJHRA Secretary

D

ear Junior High Members: TEXAS NATIONAL CHAMPIONS FOURTH YEAR IN A ROW! Wow what a ride Des Moines, IA ended up being. Texas brought home the trophy for the fourth year in a row, along with the Girls and Boys Championship as well. Everything was new this year and took a little getting used to. We did not eat sand that blew so hard in Gallop, but we did have many rainy periods of our week stay. It was a little wet moving around getting to the arenas, but both arenas were indoor, so we were dry during the performances. Going into the short go we brought the majority back, so I knew we had a shot at it – and TEXAS you did it! Of course we have ordered the National Buckles that Texas will award each one on the team, because everyone had a shot in this! Congratulations to the whole National Team. Madison Myers was named the Light Rifle National Champion and Jordi Edens was named the Rookie All Around Cowgirl. We had several in the top twenty as you can read in this months Extreme. Just to remind everyone we will begin the two new rough stock events this year Bareback and Saddle Bronc on Steers. At the midwinter meeting it was said that these would not be going to the State Finals, but after the High School Finals it passed to bring them to Nationals in 2015 – so we will be taking two more events to Nationals this year as well. As everyone is gearing up for the 2014 – 2015 Rodeo season, remember to start talking to your schools now about the state finals. We understand that the majority of you will have to miss your last week of school, if you will start talking to the schools now it might help. The dates for the 2014 State Finals is going to be May 24 – May 30, 2015. We are forced in having the finals at this time due to the timing of the National Finals. Remember I am always an email or a phone call away if I can help with anything! I am looking forward to a great 2014-15! - Anne Dollery

Texas Junior High Rodeo Association News Ever wonder what it’s like to rodeo in Region 1?

By jadyn duggan– TJHRA Reg. I Secretary

R

egion 1 is a tough, hardworking and fun environment. We have great kids and parents that help you out when you need it and a good group of hard working people. Region 1 kids are tough and ready for what is coming their way. Since almost all of our rodeos are outdoors, we compete in all types of weather. Even the extreme. Rain, snow and wind - you can bet we are working hard. One member that knows about hard work is Kyler McClendon

jade kenney & Robbyn Wells

from Canadian. This is what he had to say about his first year. “It was really fun. I hoped to go to state and win some money. I did good until the Region Finals where I missed some calves and just messed up.” Now as a returning member he has similar goals. “I hope to go to state and win some prizes.” Region 1 kids travel all over the Texas kyler mcclendon ribbon roping Panhandle to compete in rodeos. Each rodeo is in a different location from the one before it. We have some kids that travel long distances from out of state to come compete with us. TR Frost is one of our members that travels from New Mexico and had this to say: “As a rodeo athlete, we chose Texas Region 1 because my parents wanted a family rodeo environment for my sister and me. Some states have issues with drinking and drugs and my parents want us to do what we love in a safe environment.” We all work very hard to stay at the top of our game but we still have fun. With members spread out across the Texas Panhandle and neighboring states, Region 1 friends look forward to the next rodeo where they can spend time socializing at the campground and bringing the heat in the arena. We all put in a lot of time to make it to these rodeos and to do what we do the best. Overall, Region 1 is a tough, hardworking and fun environment.

2014-2015 TJHRA Princess

A

bbie Grace Suggs is the reigning Texas Junior High Rodeo Association Princess for 2014-15. Although she is a member of Region V, she now enjoys representing all 10 regions in the TJHRA. Abbie is the daughter of Tracy Suggs and attends Evadale Junior High, where she is in the 8th grade. Rodeo has been a way of life for Abbie and her two sisters, Laken and Kylie – practically since they all could walk. Abbie has been a member of numerous youth rodeo and state-wide rodeo associations, including Pineywoods Youth Rodeo Association, National Little Britches Rodeo Association, National Barrel Horse Association, and many more. Abbie enjoys competing in barrel racing and pole bending and devotes all her time to riding and preparing for upcoming rodeos, as well as rodeo queen pageants. Abbie also enjoys competing in beauty pageants and modeling, especially for Julie Ewing Designs of Bastrop, Texas. Abbie is not only fashion forward in the rodeo world, but in her daily life, as well. Rodeo, horsemanship skills, and the western way of life run deep in her veins. Abbie is looking forward to representing her region, her state and this wonderful association throughout the year. She plans to attend many rodeos to spread the word about the TJHRA. She is honored to have this title and can’t wait to see old friends down the rodeo trail, as well as make new and lasting friendships along the way.

What It’s Really All About! By MaKaylee butler– TJHRA Region II

R

egion 2 has tough me that rodeo is not all about winning. Its about responsibility and being able to spend time with the people you love. Region 2 is extremely family oriented. Region 2 and all 10 regions supported me while I was running for vice – President. Even though I didn’t win I still felt like

a winner because all the support I had from all 10 regions and I appreciate all the support from every competitor. Ive made a lot of new friends through region 2. I may not win through the timed clock or by the judges but I am a winner through the people that I have met while ive been in region 2. I would like to personally thank the City of Gonzalez for their hospitality I’m looking forward to the start of a new rodeo year and seeing all the awesome, and amazing people in Region 2 that I got to meet last year.
