IN MEMORIAM: CHYNA GIRL

The Bountiful Heart of Chyna Girl

The summers in Miami Beach were dry on bookings for weeks, months at a time. Many of the dancers and drag performers would get evicted, becoming unhoused. Chyna Girl would open her home to so many of us during those years. “Girl you could stay at my place but you better get along with everyone,” she would say. One year there was about six of us scattered throughout the apartment. Sleeping on her couches, the pull-out bed, or the floor. We would pass the time watching fashion runway shows, music videos, and beauty pageants. For dinner she would go with Fantasy and Wanda to the corner market for a few hot plates to feed us all – with the tips she’d made at Lucky Cheng’s. Her maternal, strong Leo heart making sure we were all fed, sheltered and safe.

THE HYUNDAI AIR & SEA SHOW RETURNS TO MIAMI BEACH

This Memorial Day Weekend you can show your patriotism and honor the members of our military by attending the 8th Annual National Salute to America’s Heroes Hyundai Air & Sea Show in Miami Beach. This thrilling production known as ‘The Greatest Show Above the Earth,’ brings together all six branches of the United States military, police, firefighter, and first responder agencies for an exhilarating event May 25 and 26. The Hyundai Air & Sea Show will take place on the beach between 10th and 15th streets. Enjoy choreographed Top Gun-style flyovers and special operations demonstrations from noon to 6:30 p.m. both days. Hyundai Air & Sea Show is a tribute to our military heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect and defend our freedom. The show is free and open to the public and will showcase a collective of U.S. military, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, and professional water sports athletes.

One of the largest collections of military aircrafts will fly overhead, including lightning-speed jets, historic planes, and helicopters. The F-18 (F/A-18 Hornet), a versatile carrier-capable

combat jet renowned for its supersonic capabilities and allweather performance will make its first appearance at the Show. Some favorite jets making their return will be the F-16 Fighting Falcons, the revered F-15 Eagles, the ground troopbeloved A-10 Thunderbolt II (‘Warthog’), and the F-22 Raptor, the most advanced fighter jets in the world. The F-35 Lightning II and a selection of B-1, B-2 and B-52 Bombers, and HH60 Helicopters will also be flying.

If all these amazing aircraft weren’t enough, they will be accompanied by precision jumps executed by highly trained, outstanding military paratroopers from five distinct groups: the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, the Army Black Daggers, the Navy Leap Frogs, the USAF Pararescue and the recognizable maroon beret-wearing Red Devils from the British Army’s Parachute Regiment. These brilliant paratroopers will carry out awe-inspiring formation jumps and breathtaking individual displays.

After the Air & Sea Show on May 25, the Music Explosion concert will brighten Miami Beach with free entertainment and performances by top musical acts, U.S. Military bands and the electrifying U.S. Army Golden Knights’ nighttime pyro parachute jump. During sunset you will experience a wonderful 3D Mapping Projection on the historic Art Deco buildings paying homage to our nation’s heroes. The night will close with the FRLA Fireworks Extravaganza presented by the

PUBLISHER’S CORNER MIAMI BEACH PRIDE WAS FULL OF ALL THE BEAUTIFUL COLORS OF THE RAINBOW

Miami Beach Pride was a great fête this year. In this April Issue #4 we bring you our photo aIbums of the Miami Beach Pride Parade and the Festival with lots of photographs of the lovely performers and people who attended Pride. In Out & About, we preview this year’s exhilarating Hyundai Air & Sea Show returning to Miami Beach Memorial Day Weekend. In Arts Newsie, we tell you about the beloved Broadway Musical Peter Pan, flying into the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in May. Our cover model is Alex Taylor and Antony Kozz took his striking photographs. Read our interview of Alex to learn more about him and enjoy the beautiful photos.

This month, we also remember Chyna Girl in our In Memoriam dedicated to a much-loved member of our LGBTQ community who touched many hearts with kindness and friendship during her life. Edison Farrow is one of many people who worked with Chyna. When I asked Edison what was his fondest memory of Chyna, Edison shared with me that “We had many incredible times together. But, seven years at Buck15 will always be my fondest memories with Chyna. Every Thursday night for seven years, Chyna, Daisy and I were at our party ‘The Simple Life Thursdays.’ It was a magical time. Every night was so fun and exciting. They were the true glory days of South Beach, fun and carefree. At the time, I don't think that I realized how special these moments were.” I remember going to Buck15 many times when Chyna was there. May Chyna Girl rest in peace…

After attending Miami Beach Pride, I was super happy to see so many people in our LGBTQ community having a good time and being proud of whom we are as individuals. LGBTQ people from all walks of life and our allies took part in a fun Pride Parade full of the colors of the rainbow with great messages on display. Also in the Parade were allies who support us. After the Parade, the Sunday Festival was packed with a wide assortment of LGBTQ people who came out to celebrate together as the powerful community that we are – myself included.

Miami Beach Pride was the perfect illustration of the power and influence we have doing things together as a community. It was also a reminder that our struggle to protect and defend our rights is never ending. There are still many people out there who openly discriminate against us. This is why we must remain proactive in fighting for rights and never compromise or settle!

Cheers,

THE BROADWAY MUSICAL PETER PAN FLIES INTO MIAMI MAY 7

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts will showcase the South Florida premiere of the Broadway Musical Peter Pan May 7-12. This beloved musical has entertained fans of all ages for almost seven decades. The re-imagined new production coming to the Arsht Center is directed by Emmy Award winner Lonny Price and has an additional book by notable playwright Larissa FastHorse. According to Lonny, “Peter Pan is one of the great treasures of the American musical theatre. The show nurtures and inspires the imagination of its audience and reminds us to keep alive the child within us all.” Larissa FastHorse also adds, “I am thrilled to be part of bringing Peter Pan to life for a new generation. If you loved this musical before, you will still see the show that enchanted you, while discovering a Peter Pan that everyone can enjoy, without harm, for many years to come.”

Peter Pan is based on Sir James M. Barrie’s timeless tale and was originally directed, choreographed, and adapted by Broadway legend Jerome Robbins. The show also features an evocative and treasured score by Morris (Moose) Charlap, lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, additional lyrics by Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Amanda Green, and additional music by Jule Styne.

Peter Pan and his playful sidekick Tinker Bell come to the bedroom of the Darling children late one night, and with a sprinkle of fairy dust and some happy thoughts, the kids are taken on an unforgettable, magical journey. Their adventures include iconic and timeless songs such as “I'm Flying,” “I Gotta Crow,” “I Won't Grow Up,” and “Neverland” that everyone will love. Seventeen-year-old actor Nolan Almeida from Orange County, California plays the high-flying Peter Pan, and Cody Garcia is Captain Hook. According to Director Lonny Price, “Nolan embodies all the beautiful contradictions of Peter. He’s an extraordinarily gifted young actor, a wonderful singer and nothing short of magical. Cody Garcia as Captain Hook is utterly modern, surprising and one of the most engaging actors I’ve ever worked with.”

The Arsht Center will also host the ‘Peter Pan Family Nights: This Way to Neverland’ pre-show experience starting at 6:30 p.m. May 7 and 8. Ahoy! Calling all lost boys, fairies, and pirates to join in, get a treasure map and set sail on an adventure to Neverland, while exploring themed stations and creating glittering crafts as you fly through Fairy Hollow, Pirates Cove, and Crocodile Creek. The ‘This Way to Neverland’ pre-show experience is free with a ticket to the May 7 or 8 performances of Peter Pan. Visit arshtcenter.org to purchase your tickets to Peter Pan!
