Dear Class of 2020,

We know this is not the world of budding adulthood and boundless opportunity that you imagined would rise up to greet you as you flipped those tassels on graduation day. We never expected it either.

But as stressful and uncertain as these times are – for you, for us, and for millions of graduates all across the country – buried deep within them are profound life lessons about courage and resiliency, optimism, inner strength and faith.

It seems you have learned these lessons well. How do we know?

We have watched you over the last few months as you were forced to separate from friends and extended family, and as you switched over to distance learning programs with grace and good humor.

We have watched you and we have taken stock of the way in which you rose to the challenge – stepping up to support your communities and one another in any way, with caring and compassion.

We have watched you as you leaned in and bravely weathered the storm, with vigor and fortitude.

We have watched you and we understood that before us stood tomorrow’s leaders. And that alone gives us hope.

The Talmud tells us that “The highest form of wisdom is kindness.” And so, as you move on to the next stage of life, be safe, be happy and always be kind.
