Professional and Colligate Coach at Biola University for 49 years.

Although retired from college coaching, she is busier now, serving as President of the La Mirada CTA where she and her group focus their attention on Wheel Chair Tennis as well as Serving Challenged Athletes.

The La Mirada CTA was only founded in 2019, but that doesn’t mean that’s when her service started. The idea of Wheel Chair Tennis for Dee was first thought up

back in the 60’s. When asked by a family member how long she intended to play tennis – her response was “until I’m in a wheel chair” – can you say light bulb moment!

Then in ’78 is when the real work of wheel chair tennis for Dee started taking shape. Her inspiration was at a Vic Braden Wheel Chair Tennis Camp where she met the infamous Mr. Brad Parks. From that

point there was no looking back. Then in 1990, the Inter Collegiate Coaches Association mandated that coaches find a way to give back, since then, she has done weekly wheel chair clinics, tournaments, etc.

Dee also has close ties with the Special Olympics where she is a tournament Director running events at Biola as well as La Habra Tennis Center.

In recent months, I have received several requests for more teaching tips and content in our newsletter. Therefore, I thought I would include a simple yet effective evaluation template that I use for both my juniors and college players. I identified 20 categories related to a player’s game

I recommend giving your players the evaluation first, followed by your assessment of each of category, and then you can total the numbers between the two for an overall player/coach score. It was well deserved for a hard-working tennis pro with over 30 years of teaching experience who is always working to promote our sport. Genya is the Executive Director of Tennis at iTennis, a management company overseeing 8 tennis facilities in the LA area. He is also Director of Tennis at

I was presented with the Star Award. As a longtime USPTA Professional, I started a Tennis Corps program in the Redlands community in partnership with a veteran’s non-profit organization, ThanksUSA, to bring tennis to military veterans in the area. This program supports local veterans by bringing physical exercise along the

rehabilitative effects of social interaction. I am a United States Air Force veteran myself and started this program in September 2021 in collaboration with the Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center in Loma Linda, California. I reached out to a recreational therapist at the VA who helped inform veterans about the weekly clinic, which is free of charge to the participants and their spouses. The program also acts as a mentoring program for local middle school and

high school students. The youth help instruct the veterans on tennis, and the veterans share their military and professional career experiences with the youth. It’s a win-win situation for both groups. I’m hoping to expand the program in the future by adding wheelchair tennis for veterans and their families. In addition, I am also assisting other tennis professionals throughout Southern California who wish to add Tennis Corps to their program in support of veterans in their

in partnership with ThanksUSA. If you’re interested in starting a program like this at your facility, please reach out and I will help guide you along the way.

Our first District 5 event is scheduled on August 14th at 950 Parkford Drive, Redlands CA 92346 @ 9:00am at Ford Park in Redlands. We will be discussing the serve technique from the beginner to the advanced player along with other strokes of the game.

Please bring your thoughts and ideas to share with the group. It’s a time to network, see and meet new friends. Complimentary lunch will be at Panera Bread in Redlands.

I would like to congratulate two USPTA members from District 6 who received awards at the USPTA Southern California

Division Conference for their outstanding achievements and contributions to Orange County tennis players and pros.

Chris Ketcham who is the Head Tennis Coach at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa received the College Coach of the Year Award. His woman’s’ team was 21-1 and won the Orange Empire Conference this year and the men’s team was 12-7.

Steve Riggs, former Director of Tennis for the City of Irvine, received the District 6 Pro of the Year award for all of the hard work he does running UTR Junior Team Tennis, junior tournaments, and running the 12th Annual OCCTA Tennis Seminar this year. One hundred and twelve pros, coaches, and parents attended this year.

I will be hosting another District 6 Event on September 11. The theme of these events is “teaching strokes that are typically difficult to teach.” We will discuss and do drills to accelerate the learning process for the topspin serve. We will also work on slice backhands and one-handed backhand volleys. These shots are commonly very difficult for players with twohand backhands to hit well. We will have a collaborative discussion about how to accelerate the learning process for all of these shots. This event will be held at Magnolia Tree Park in Tustin from 11:00am until 12:30pm on September 11.

HE INITIATED AND THEN HIS PALOS VERDES HIGH SCHOOL BOYS TENNIS TEAM CONDUCTED A CHARITY EVENT AND RAISED MONEY DURING THEIR SEASON SINCE THEY ARE PASSIONATE IN SUPPORTING THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY,

THEY WERE INSPIRED BY TEACHERS/PARENTS AT THEIR HIGH SCHOOL WHO HAVE GOTTEN LEUKEMIA.

THEY LEVERAGED NATIONAL 501C3 NON-PROFIT "TENNIS LOVERS FOR CHARITY"
