Season Preview

A UCF women’s soccer team led by Amanda Cromwell always has an influx of newcomers that contribute right away every season. And when these student-athletes begin to gel with the skilled veterans, the Knights take off. Cromwell realizes this will be an even more important ingredient in 2010 if the Black and Gold desires to repeat as Conference USA champions. The Knights lost several pieces from a 2009 squad that was ranked as high as No. 8 in the nation, including All-American midfielder Becca Thomas, leading scorer Courtney Whidden and Nikki Moore who arguably will go down as one of the best backs in UCF history.

In all, UCF is without five starters from a year ago, but with a total of 16 freshmen on this season’s roster, the newcomers have a perfect chance to immediately crack the lineup in preseason camp. Yet the talent level of the 20 returning Knights will still make the 2010 club a powerful threat in C-USA once again. Heading into her 12th year as the leader of the Knights, Cromwell shares her thoughts as the 2010 season approaches. Q: You lost a lot of quality seniors so what are the main concerns for you going into preseason camp? A: The biggest thing will probably be finding goal scoring and who will step up to fill Courtney’s shoes. But also the playmaking that Becca provided in the midfield will be another main area we need to focus on. All of our seniors had huge roles for us last year including Yvonne George up front and how she terrorized defenses, Nikki Moore in the back and

Emily Maynard in the midfield. We also had a great keeper in Lynzee Lee who will be missed this year, but fortunately we do have Aline Reis back for her junior season. So where our goals come from and who will spearhead the attack from the midfield are the two big questions we need to answer. Q: Who do you think can replace Courtney Whidden and Yvonne George? A: Based on the spring, Kim Newsome and Tishia Jewell should be vying for the role as our leading goal scorer. One of them should get a bunch of assists and the other will get more opportunities to finish. They are not natural goal scorers like Whidden who was really gifted in that area, so they have to really be focused on timing runs and being in the right place on first touches. They need to be pure finishers instead of just striking the ball. Tishia didn’t score a goal last year so we want her to get on a roll early this year to build her confidence. But they both can be very dynamic up top. Q: And what about filling in for Becca Thomas? A: There are a lot of midfielders that will be given shots, but based on this past spring we have to look at Stacie Hubbard and Katie Jackson as two players who have done well for us. We put Hubbard into more of an attacking role in the spring, as she was primarily a defensive mid in the past. She’s very good on the dribble and can be very explosive. We also could add another defensive mid in there and have both of them attacking. Katie has better playmaking ability, I think she sees the game a bit better than our other midfielders and she can play the special balls that Becca did for us last year.

Q: You have Christina Petrucco, Lauren Halbert and Bianca Joswiak returning. So what do you expect from the defense in 2010? A: We did have freshman Ashley Nicol in the spring, and she stepped into that right back spot and played great. She has great crosses and hits a good ball. The one thing she has that Nikki was lacking is her heading ability. She is very good in the air, and that will add to the strength of our defense. Ashley will be able to get up and down the line, but right now doesn’t have the one-on-one ability that Nikki possessed, so we’ll have to get on her to join the attack. Q: Aline Reis was an All-American keeper as a freshman, and her stats were even better as a sophomore. How do you feel knowing that she continues to anchor the defense? A: Aline is so quick and agile, and her positioning is so good that her 5-foot-3 frame isn’t a liability. We’ve had tall keepers in the past that get beat on high balls, but Aline is able to reach them. She just needs to stay healthy. We would like to keep her in a plastic bubble if possible. Combining Aline and our returning defenders, we have high expectations of our defense in terms of shutouts and goals against. Q: What are your thoughts on your schedule, which is as always very tough? A: We have the right mix of teams in our schedule. A lot of them have been to the NCAA Tournament and others who are on the cusp of getting in. We don’t have any easy games this year as always. We have to show up everyday for training and on gamedays because it’s just as important to get those early non-conference victories for our RPI and a possible atlarge bid.

Amanda Cromwell Head Coach - 12th Season with the Knights Head coach Amanda Cromwell continues to guide the Knights into the national spotlight as she begins her 12th season at UCF. From top-10 rankings, NCAA Tournaments, conference championships and All-Americans, the UCF women’s soccer program only looks for even bigger things in 2010. Team Success Since taking over the helm of UCF women’s soccer in 1999, Cromwell has guided her team to a 158-68-15 record, eight NCAA Tournament appearances, four Atlantic Sun Tournament championships and three C-USA regular-season titles. The Knights have capped off the last nine seasons ranked among the top squads in their region, including a No. 1 ranking in the Central Region by the NSCAA in 2009. During that ‘09 campaign, UCF was in the national rankings every week beginning in mid-September, climbing to No. 8 in the country Oct. 27 which was UCF’s highest mark in the Cromwell era. Individual Honors In addition to her accomplishments as head coach, Cromwell also has helped her players excel individually both on and off the field. During her tenure, Knights have earned 79 all-conference honors and 28 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region selections. The awards piled on following the Knights’ dominant 2009 campaign. Becca Thomas became UCF’s first midfielder since 1995 to be honored as an All-American, while she joined Nikki Moore, Courtney Whidden and Aline Reis as all-region selections. When C-USA released its postseason accolades, UCF placed four on the first team: Thomas, Moore, Whidden and Reis. That was highlighted by Thomas being voted as the C-USA Midfielder of the Year. As her players were being dressed with trophies, Cromwell received a little hardware as well. The leader of the Knights was named the 2009 C-USA Coach of the Year as well as the All-Central Region Coach of the Year. In 2008, Cromwell helped Reis develop into UCF’s first overall All-American since 1995, as Reis was one of just three freshmen on either the first or second team. Meanwhile, Courtney Baines (2004 and 2005) and Jennifer Manis (2007) both received conference defensive player of the year honors, Danielle dos Santos was the 2007 C-USA Newcomer of the Year, Jennifer Montgomery was named 2002 Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year and Michelle Anderson earned 2001 A-Sun Player of the Year recognition. Her student-athletes are also known for their academic success, as they have collected 184 conference academic awards. In 2005, Baines received ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honors and the C-USA Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete Award. Thomas later would become the seventh different player in UCF history to earn NSCAA/adidas Women’s Collegiate Scholar All-America honors, joining former Cromwell protégés Baines, Jennifer Manis, Jackie VanLooven, dos Santos and Allison Blagriff. Year-By-Year Highlights With a talented senior class, the 2009 Knights had a lot to look forward to as they would play the second toughest nonconference schedule in the country. And with victories over No. 4 Florida State and No. 10 Duke, UCF was in line for a big year. The C-USA Coach of the Year, Cromwell took her squad to a No. 8 national ranking, a 17-5-1 record and a C-USA regular season title by going 10-1-0 in league play. The Knights were a No. 3 seed for the NCAA Tournament but were forced to travel to Wisconsin for the dance. Although the Black and Gold suffered a loss in chilly conditions in the second round, 2009 was certainly a year to remember. Not only did UCF make its third-straight trip to the postseason, it set a single-season attendance record with 4,601 fans in eight matches, including a school mark of 1,142 fans who saw UCF upset FSU in overtime.

Cromwell and the Knights also put together a grueling schedule for 2008, and the results did not disappoint. UCF completed the year with a 14-6-3 record, and went 5-2-1 in a non-conference slate that included four ranked teams. That, along with a 7-2-2 mark in C-USA, helped the Black and Gold secure an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament, where it topped Miami to reach at least the second round for the eighth time in school history. UCF finished 2008 by ranking first in All-C-USA Team selections, with Becca Thomas and Nikki Moore leading the way as members of the first team. The 2007 season gave the Knights yet another championship ring, as the Knights claimed a share of the C-USA regular-season title and finished with a 15-4-4 record. UCF went on to earn an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament, where it defeated Auburn and played No. 6 Florida to a 0-0 draw in the second round. The Black and Gold completed 2007 ranked No. 20 in the final RPI poll and No. 30 in the Soccer Buzz national rankings. During its sophomore campaign in C-USA in 2006, UCF posted a record of 11-6-2, including a 1-0 shutout of No. 9 Rice and a 2-1 win over No. 15 SMU. Five Knights were named to the all-conference teams as forward Roberta Pelarigo and midfielder Becca Thomas grabbed first-team honors and goalkeeper Jennifer Manis received a spot on the C-USA AllAcademic Team. Both Pelarigo and Manis also were tapped for NSCAA All-Southeast Region accolades. The Knights enjoyed tremendous success in their inaugural season in C-USA in 2005. They posted a 12-10 overall mark and an 8-1 record in conference play to earn a share of the regular season championship. After defeating Houston 3-2 in the first round of the C-USA Championship, UCF fell to eventual runner-up and NCAA Tournament participant UTEP. During the team’s final season in the Atlantic Sun, the Knights went 17-4-2 overall and were a perfect 9-0 against teams from the state of Florida, including wins over No. 14 Florida State and No. 10 Florida. They were 8-2 in league play as they picked up the A-Sun’s first ever at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, where they defeated Florida, 3-2, in the first round. Cromwell led UCF to a 16-5-1 record in 2003 as the team won the A-Sun Tournament crown for the third consecutive season. The Black and Gold advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where Florida topped the Knights, 3-2, in double overtime in the first round. The success of 2003 came on the heels of a record-breaking 2002 season. That year, the Knights posted an 18-5-0 mark, eclipsing the program record for most wins previously set by Cromwell’s 1999 squad. After defending both the A-Sun regular season and tournament titles, UCF returned to the NCAA College Cup for the second consecutive year - and took a 2-0 loss at the hands of Auburn in its opening match. In 2001, the Knights finished with a 14-6 record and took top honors in the A-Sun before making a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the second time under Cromwell’s leadership. UCF compiled an 8-11-1 overall mark and landed second in the conference in 2000 thanks to a 7-2 record against A-Sun opponents. And after a 7-5 start in 1999, UCF rebounded with a 10-game unbeaten streak that included a 1-0 win over Furman in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before perennial power North Carolina halted the Knights’ bid for a national crown. They finished the year with a 16-6-1 overall record and an 8-0-1 conference mark. Cromwell Prior to UCF A native of Annandale, Va., Cromwell led the Annandale High School team to a state championship and earned NSCAA All-America honors. The school retired her jersey after she graduated. Cromwell continued her playing career at the University of Virginia, where she captained the squad to the 1991 NCAA Final Four. She added even more individual honors to her resume, including two All-America selections and four All-Atlantic Coast conference awards. She earned Soccer America’s MVP award twice, captured three all-south region selections and was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy.

Colby Hale Associate Head Coach - Eighth Season with the Knights ghts Colby Hale has evolved into one of the premier assistant coaches in the country. In his eighth year with UCF and his fourth as the associate head coach in 2010-11, Hale serves as the program’s recruiting coordinator while his on-field responsibilities include coaching the Knights’ attack. The UCF offense has scored 313 goals during his seven-year tenure, and was ranked among the top 25 scoring offenses nationally for two-consecutive seasons. It also placed 35th in the country in 2007 by amassing 46 goals. Hale has guided 24 offensive players to all-conference honors, while 16 received all-region recognition. Meanwhile, Hale’s recruiting classes have also garnered national attention. In 2006, UCF’s incoming class was listed at 24th by SoccerBuzz.com, the program’s highest national ranking. The Knights were also ranked among the top 75 in 2004 and 2005. Prior to the 2007 campaign, Hale witnessed UCF claim the top recruiting spot in C-USA and was ranked 39th in the nation.

Over the past seven years, Hale’s recruits have earned five conference player of the year awards, 49 all-conference honors and 28 all-region distinctions. Meanwhile Aline Reis was named an NSCAA All-American in 2008 and Becca Thomas followed that up by being selected as an NSCAA All-American in 2009. During Hale’s first two seasons at UCF, the Knights won Atlantic Sun Championship titles and played in the postseason. The 2004 squad advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship. In 2003 and 2004, Hale helped coach a UCF offense that was ranked in the top 25 in the country in scoring. Since moving to C-USA in 2005, Hale has helped the Knights rack up two regular-season crowns and two trips to the NCAA Tournament. Before moving to UCF, Hale spent three years as an assistant coach at Oral Roberts. The Golden Eagles won two Mid-Continent Conference regular season titles with Hale on the sideline. In Hale’s first season at Oral Roberts, the team recorded a school-record 14 victories in 2000.

While at Oral Roberts, Hale also worked as the director of coaching for the Central Tulsa Thunder Soccer Club. In 2002, he began coaching in the Oklahoma Olympic Development Program. A 1997 graduate from Oral Roberts, Hale served as an assistant boy’s soccer coach at Union High School in Tulsa, Okla. Union captured the 1997 Oklahoma Class 5A State Championship.

Donna Fishter Assistant Coach - 11th Season with the Knights UCF has always been known for its dynamic and impressive goalkeepers. And in her 11th season as an assistant coach, Donna Fishter continues to

During 2008, Fishter mentored redshirt freshman Reis into becoming UCF’s first starting freshman keeper since 1995, as she went on to post six shutouts and 107 saves, the fifthmost in school history. Fishter’s guidance enabled Reis to be named an NSCAA All-American, serving as one of just three freshmen in the country who were selected to either the first or second teams. Reis also was voted onto the All-C-USA Second Team and the C-USA All-Freshman Team.

Since Fishter arrived in Orlando for the 2000 campaign, the Knights have posted 87 total shutouts. She has mentored some of the top goalkeepers in school history, including Jessica Kuhlman, Jennifer Manis and All-American Aline Reis. Kuhlman earned First-Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors in 2002 and finished her career with 19.8 shutouts, good for fifth all-time at UCF.

In addition to her duties with the keepers, Fishter provides the team with leadership training throughout the year.

After posting a 1.07 overall GAA and four shutouts, Manis was named Second-Team All-Conference USA and earned a spot on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Southeast Region third team in 2006. She followed that up in 2007 with 10 shutouts, a 0.87 GAA and 126 saves, the second most in a single-season at UCF. Manis went on to be named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year and an NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-American.

Fishter spent three years playing in the United Soccer Leagues women’s division. She started her career with the Indiana Blaze in 1997. After moving to Florida, Fishter spent time with the Orlando Ladyhawks and the Tampa Bay Extreme.
