this goal, alongside the restoration of the absolute security of the citizens of Israel.” Mark Regev, Netanyahu’s senior advisor, told the BBC News: “Hamas has agreed to this not because they have suddenly become humanitarians. People who kidnap babies are not humanitarians but they have been under amazing pressure. The IDF has been hitting them hard. We have been destroying their military machine, we’ve been eliminating their top leadership… That has forced them to accept this cessation of fighting. They needed a break. We were hitting them hard, they were desperate for this time out.” Regarding the other hostages, he noted: “It’s a bittersweet day. On the one hand 50 people are supposed to come out but there are some 180 unaccounted for. It’s difficult. The Israeli government will do everything that can be done to have all the hostages released. Our problem here is Hamas. Hamas is a brutal, fanatical organisation that gives no qualms about murdering the innocent.” US President Joe Biden thanked Qatar and Egypt for their efforts in securing the release of Israelis taken by Hamas during its assault against Israel on October 7th. share the immense relief of those released and their families, our thoughts go out to those Israeli and foreign hostages remaining in the tunnels of Gaza. We recognise that the value of human life is always paramount and that restoring these hostages to the safety of their families requires difficult decisions including the release of terrorists. We hope and pray this is but the first stage leading to the release of all hostages and removal of the Hamas terror threat to Israel.” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen: “We will do its utmost to use this pause for a humanitarian surge to Gaza.” Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader welcomed the hostage deal in PMQs. Foreign Minister David Cameron: “This agreement is a crucial step towards providing relief to the families of the hostages and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. I urge all parties to ensure the agreement is delivered in full.” Netanyahu told the Kirya meeting on Tuesday night: “We will continue the war until we achieve all of our war aims, to eliminate Hamas, return all of our hostages and our missing, and ensure that there is no element in Gaza that threatens Israel.” Netanyahu acknowledged an agreement was a “difficult” but “correct” decision.

“All of the security agencies fully support it,” he noted. “They have made it completely clear in their professional assessment, that the security of our forces will be ensured during the pause and that the intelligence effort will be maintained in those days. They have made it clear that not only will the war effort not be harmed, it will enable the IDF to prepare for the continuation of the fighting.” Defense Minister Yoav Gallant noted: “All members of the Cabinet, the IDF, ISA and Mossad are working on hostages and missing persons day and night. IDF soldiers risk their lives every day and we see the results. The release of the hostages is of immense value. We all think about the children, soldiers, adults and Holocaust survivors, and we understand how important this is. “At the same time, without continuing (military) pressure, there will be no chance of bringing (home) additional hostages. The government has included in its decision, the unequivocal demand that immediately after we have exhausted this phase, all operations by the IDF, ISA and all the security forces, will continue in full force in order to defeat Hamas and to create the necessary conditions to bring home additional hostages.”

Thousands attend AJEX parade BY DAVID SAFFER

Over 3,000 thousand people marched on the AJEX remembrance parade and ceremony at The Cenotaph on Whitehall last Sunday. The ‘Side by Side’ themed event saw 3,000 spectators from the Jewish community demonstrate continued unity with Israel during the war in Gaza. Veterans and families honoured the legacy of Jewish servicemen and women contributing to the British Armed Forces. JLGB members, JFS cadets, Jewish schools, scout groups and Jewish community created a multigenerational event. The parade marked significant anniversaries including the 80th Elliot Goodman and son anniversary of Jake wearing family medals the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, Dam Busters raid, and 70th anniversary of the end of fighting in the Korean War. Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis conducted the service at the Cenotaph with AJEX Chaplain Rabbi (Major)

Reuben Livingstone and Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg. Wreaths were laid by senior members of AJEX, Board of Deputies, veteran organisations, military leaders, JFS Combined Cadet Force and CST. Six students from Jewish schools laid poppy posies. AJEX received letters of support from King Charles and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. National Chair, Dan Fox hosted the Reviewing Officer, Air Chief Marshall Sir Michael Wigston. The parade was commanded by Ron Shelley and supported by Commander Daniel Weil, Operational Marshall Lt Col Simon Soskin and Deputy Parade Commander Jon Tyler. The parade band were the RAF Regiment

who created a moving atmosphere. Fox said: “This event sits at the very centre of what it means to be British and Jewish. Our community, our country, nothing and no one changes that”. The ceremony marked the end of schools taking part in the Remember in Red Campaign, AJEX speaker and veteran school activities, AJEX Shabbats and national events across the UK. Fiona Palmer, AJEX Chief Executive welcomed the huge turnout, noting: “The theme captured the current mood of community unity, strength and pride especially after events in southern Israel. It stood as a powerful defiance against antisemitism. In remembrance we look back and forward with hope for peace amid global challenges.” A scouts statement noted: “We felt proud to be part of something for the whole community, marching alongside regimental associations, schools and other groups. We remembered our grandfathers, great grandfathers and family members who fought

for Britain in the World Wars. As well as commemorating those who served in the armed forces, we prayed for the six million Jews who died in the Shoah. It was also very special to hear the Chief Rabbi speak and salute community leaders.” CST and the Met Police ensured safety at the ceremony. Herzog message to Jewish communities BY ADAM MOSES

President Isaac Herzog released his latest message of hope and unity to Jewish communities around the world last Sunday. With news of a potential hostage deal the message followed his address broadcast live to 300,000 participants in the March for Israel demonstration in Washington DC last week. It also came against a background of rising antisemitic attacks around the world. “The Hamas massacre in southern Israel has forced us to confront a kind of evil that was not supposed to exist in the modern world,” he said. “We must be very clear, this is not only a war between Israel and Hamas. Israel may be fighting on the ground, but it is fighting the battle of the entire civilised world. We are determined to stand up to this evil.” Herzog said that whilst Israel was thriving IDF soldiers were fighting on the frontlines, he was aware of support for the State globally. “Israelis of every background are showing up for each other in remarkable ways,” he observed. “Jewish communities across the world are mobilising with unprecedented energy. I receive offers of support and solidarity from every corner of the globe. Israel is here for you, and you are here for Israel.” Acknowledging global antisemitism, he noted: “In the wake of the massacres, we

have seen a terrifying surge throughout the world. Stars of David painted on homes in France, families in London removing mezuzas for fear of attack, hateful demonstrations and an elderly Jewish protester killed in Los Angeles. This fact has exposed the close link between antisemitism and

Chai.” Herzog, meantime, continues to meet world leaders including Latvia President Edgars Rinkevics in Jerusalem this week. Israel’s president stressed the importance of efforts to release the hostages held by Hamas. Rinkevics met with a number

of families. Herzog told the Latvian leader he was grateful to his nation for being supportive in “dire moments” in our history.

Noting the role of Hamas, he said: “We are fighting to uproot one of the worst, atrocious, murderous organisations in the world, an empire of evil that shows no mercy to anybody who’s different from them.” Regarding Iran, he commented: “We are dealing with an empire of hate, which emanates from Tehran. The world must understand it and challenge it with no mercy.” As for efforts to release the hostages, he added: “Most importantly, we are pleading and working tirelessly to bring the hostages back home. I’m grateful to you that you met families. This is a grave humanitarian tragedy, we want them back now, as soon as possible.” Rinkevics noted: “This is a visit of solidarity and support. We had a very moving, very emotional meeting with families of hostages being held by Hamas terrorists. It was heartbreaking to hear those stories. We feel this attack also personally, because one of our citizens, was also a citizen of Israel killed during the attack of 7 October. So let me just say, We support the right of Israel to fight, we also try to do our best a to secure the release of all hostages, working with the international community, applying pressure. We also believe the situation Israel is facing is really dangerous, not only for your country, for the region, but also for the globe. I hope all hostages will be released very soon and we will see more support and solidarity by the international community.”

OPINION

What next? OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN

These last few weeks have been difficult for all of us. Many of us have friends and relations living in Israel, some of whom have been called up as part of the war against Hamas. Some of us know people who have been murdered or kidnapped, directly or indirectly. What we all know is that we are vulnerable. In London particularly the police are worse than useless since their inactivity has emboldened the Jew haters who now feel, sadly with some justification, that they can do what they like short of physically attacking Jews and the police will do nothing. Add to this the visceral attacks on Israel by the BBC and it is making for a perfect storm. That storm though will pass. What will not pass is the fact of a 1000% rise in anti-Semitic incidents and will also not pass is the memory of 300,000 people marching through London demanding a ceasefire, saying nothing about the kidnap victims and for some of them, calling for Jihad and the murder of Jews.

When Jeremy Corbyn was leader of the Labour Party the fear of the possibility of him becoming Prime Minister pushed some people to emigrate (mostly to Israel) and many others, myself included, trying to work out how to do that and keep some form of income. Fortunately he did not win the election and resigned as leader. His legacy though has lived on, with many of his supporters remaining in the party fermenting hatred against us and now, coming out openly and showing a hatred against Israel that goes beyond just the idea of Zionism and well into Jew hate territory. Once this war is over, what then? Post Corbyn we were able to say that he was an extremist, that his acolytes had been made impotent and the new leader was taking the Labour Party to a better, less anti-Semitic future. Now I am not so sure that it will be so easy. Certainly the silent majority despise Hamas and all they stand for. It is in the nature of such a group that they do not get involved. They are not officers of trades unions, or lecturers in universities for reporters working for the BBC, ITV

and other UK broadcasters, many of whom have and will continue to spread the Jew hating word. So what next? I know what not. The pre 6 October 2023 ideas have shown to be hopeless. Interfaith has been a spectacular failure given the numbers of Muslims around the country openly calling for the destruction of Israel. The constant call for a two state solution which has given so much amusement to our enemies has done us nothing but harm. Communal leaders have this strange idea that if you are nice to people who want to kill you, or destroy the only Jewish state in the world, that they will be nice back and forget their hideous ideology. Well, that idea isn’t going to work any longer. The 300,000 might have included in its number, families and people genuinely seeking peace, but it also included very many people calling for violence against Jews. I don’t know what those numbers are. Even it was only 5%, that means 15,000 people. Even if that is described as a minority it is still a very significant

OPINION

number of people, who I am sure felt comfortable calling for death to Jews in the full knowledge that the police would do nothing. The post-war world for the UK Jews is not going to be a comfortable one. Our assumptions that we would be protected by the police have been proved disastrously incorrect. The Muslim community clearly has amongst it a large number of people who hate us. The BBC and other broadcasters will say anything about Israel as long as it is bad and there is no sign of that stopping. So what next? Easy, stop being nice to everyone. It hasn’t worked. Time to call out the Jew-hate when it occurs whatever the background or ethnicity of the perpetrator, stop demanding apologies all the time and demand action against those broadcasters who have enabled so much hate against us. We owe ourselves nothing less. Robert Festenstein is a practising solicitor and has been the principal of his Salford based firm for over 20 years. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.

Marches have coursed through the city regularly featuring genocidal chants, Hamas-style headbands, antisemitic placards, calls for jihad and the globalisation of intifada, songs about slaughtering Jews, and Islamist flags. We have witnessed mass criminality, including the glorification of terrorism, support for banned terrorist organisations such as Hamas, and incitement to racial or religious hatred against Jews. This activism is not confined to London. This past weekend, for example, the demonstrators launched micro rallies across the UK, where we saw shocking scenes, while thugs outside Downing Street encouraged one another to chase an individual whom they referred as “a Zionist”, and police stood by as protesters screamed the genocidal “From the river to

the sea, Palestine will be free” chant outside Sir Keir Starmer’s office in Camden. On top of it all, there is an enduring refusal, akin to Holocaust-denial, to accept that the barbaric October 7th Hamas terrorist atrocities actually took place. Our Demonstration and Event Monitoring Unit has helped to document and expose, week after week, the hatred and glorification of terrorism at these rallies, including among the rankand-file protesters. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, we have shown that many of the participants on these so-called peace marches in fact harbour repugnant views that would not have been out of place in Nazi Germany. The police have let us down, repeatedly refusing to heed our calls to impose conditions on the marches under section 12 of the Public Order Act, notwithstanding

an open letter that we arranged which was signed by 15 King’s Counsel calling for just that. Nor did the police use their powers under section 13 to ban the marches altogether, even as it became obvious that they could not police criminality on such a scale. While these problems have emanated from the police’s leadership – which has even tried to gaslight the Jewish community with regard to the meaning of some of the genocidal chants heard at the demonstrations – some officers on the ground have even been filmed smiling and posing next to some of the offenders. While not limiting or banning the marches, the police scandalously did find the time to stop our rented billboard van displaying the faces of children kidnapped by Hamas terrorists and ordered it to be switched off and clear out of London. Undeterred, we purchased our own van, which police again, incredibly, tried again to shut down.

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

This time we weren’t having it, and our van has stayed on the road. The hostages will not be forgotten, and we will not be silenced, until we #BringThemHome. We have not taken police inaction and double standards lying down. A few weeks ago, we held a rally outside New Scotland Yard, where hundreds gathered to demand that the police enforce the law. While the number of arrests is growing, the surge in antisemitism has yet to be arrested, and decent people across the country are appalled. After suffering weeks of hateful demonstrations that have taken over our capital and other cities across the country, it is time for our voice to be heard. That is why we – the Jewish community and our allies – are marching together against antisemitism on Sunday 26th November, at 13:30 in central London. To register, please go to antisemitism. org/march. We hope to see you – and your friends – this Sunday. Eishet Chayal Mizrachi UK is proud to announce the initiation of its latest campaign, “Eishet Chayal,” dedicated to supporting the families of IDF soldiers during Shabbat. The campaign aims to provide meals to households whereby the husbands are bravely serving in the IDF. Recognizing the immense sacrifice these families make, Mizrachi UK invites individuals and communities to join hands in ensuring that these families can experience the warmth and joy of Shabbat without the additional burden of meal preparation. The “Eishet Chayal” campaign invites donations to cover the costs of Shabbat meals for these families. Every contribution goes directly towards providing wholesome and comforting meals during these challenging times. “It has been an unprecedented success. We are so grateful to the individuals and communities who have come on board in supporting this important initiative. We invite everyone to join us on this mission to support the families. Of course, we must obviously thank and support the soldiers who are putting their lives on the line for Israel, but too, we must thank the ‘soldiers’ who are at home, caring and supporting their

families - the Eishet Chayal” said Rabbi Andrew Shaw, Chief Executive at Mizrachi UK. Mizrachi UK expresses gratitude to the generous supporters from across the UK who have already contributed to the campaign, with almost 200 meals being delivered to families in Efrat. EJC appalled by ICRC’s silence on Israeli hostages

BY ADAM MOSES

The European Jewish Congress has criticised the International Committee of the Red Cross for its inaction over Israeli hostages in captivity by Hamas. The EJC made its stance on International Children’s Day. ‘The ICRC is duty bound to engage with those responsible for the brutal kidnapping of Israeli civilians, including many women, children and babies from their homes on October the 7th and demand access to the hostages,’ an EJC statement noted. ‘If such access is denied, NGOs must challenge this refusal in the most vocal way.” Dr Ariel Muzicant, EJC President, said: “It is an absolute outrage that not only the Red Cross but also other international humanitarian organisations do not express any concern for the welfare of women and children and have remained largely silent on the atrocities committed by the Hamas death squads against Jews and Israelis. They were silent for years about Hamas war crimes in Gaza, appropriating medical facilities under their nose, for military

NEWS 17

purposes, and these NGOs only seem to find their voice to attack the Jewish State for its justified and internationally legal right to self-defence. Their inaction could be seen as tainted by clear anti-Israel bias.” EJC added in a statement: ‘For too long, the ICRC has shown a seeming disdain for Jewish suffering and not treated it equally with other populations, in word or deed. Furthermore, families of hostages do not even know if their loved ones are still alive and healthy. ‘Even as Israel was burying its dead after the Hamas atrocities, the ICRC took little time to publicly advocate for Palestinian terrorists in Israeli jails yet has not shown the same vehemence and determination on behalf of Israelis and others violently and viciously abducted from their homes.” Muzicant called on “every humanitarian organisation” to stop making excuses and demand the release of hostages. “They all had excellent access to the Hamas regime in Gaza for 16 years but now appear to have lost their contact details when Jews are involved,” he added.

OPINION

We are not alone OPINION PIECE BY GARY MOND

It was a great honour for me to be permitted to conclude the most moving pro-Israel rally that has taken place since the 7 October massacre. The event last Sunday, organised by Christian Action Against Antisemitism and attended by some 4,000 people, opposite Downing Street, was almost certainly the largest ever gathering of nonJews championing Israel in this country. I have been to many of the recent events in support of Israel and freeing the hostages. All have been positive experiences, and most have garnered good publicity. This, however, was something different. It was off the scale when it came to an outpouring of love for Israel and the Jewish people. The feelings of passion, emotion, and genuine warmth, combined with a clear appreciation that “we are all in this together”, permeated the large crowd. The expression “first the Saturday people, then the Sunday people” was totally understood, as was a quote made once by Israeli prime minister Benjamin

Netanyahu that those who seek to negate Jewish history in the land of Israel are also negating Christian history too. The sight also of thousands of non-Jews singing “Am Yisrael Chai”, “Oseh Shalom” and the Hatikvah against the background of a floodlit dark sky was almost surreal. The speakers did not include any politicians. They were predominantly in one of two categories. Some were leaders of different pro-Israel Christian groups and media channels, whose Zionism shone through with a fervour rarely seen among their Jewish counterparts. Others were close relatives of hostages who were, wholly understandably, fighting back tears while addressing us. Everyone who was there will now be thinking about Emily, a little girl who has been forced to celebrate her ninth birthday as a prisoner of Hamas in one of their horrendous tunnels. We pray for her survival, and for that of all the hostages. Additionally, the Campaign Against Antisemitism’s Gideon Falter spoke movingly about Christian support for the Jewish community and Israel, with this fantastic Christian-run event shining a light in the

darkness which will prevail, with Gideon citing Anne Frank’s quote about the powerful effect of even one single light. For my part, after thanking the organisers for an incredible event, and explaining how frightened so many of Britain’s Jews have been because of the marches of hate against Israel and the genocidal nature of Hamas, I chose a slightly different theme. I focused on the need for Christians who love Israel to show their love and support by buying from Jewish and Israeli businesses as much as possible and, most importantly, visiting Israel in large numbers when they can. Yes, the overwhelming message from this rally is that we are not alone. Also, it is evident that genuine Christians, whose main principles in their outlook on life include the emanation of peace and love for their fellow human beings, are appalled by the Jew-hatred that the hate marches have been creating. It is clear that those who hitherto have taken no stance on issues involving Israel and politics are now turning increasingly to our side when they witness the vile behaviour of our enemies. The entire current conflict is now framed as a battle between

good and evil, and rightly so. In conclusion, what does this past Sunday’s event tell us? I think that we have, for too long, as a community neglected some of our strongest supporters. I recall first noticing this tendency some five and a half years ago, when Christian groups organised a celebration at the Royal Albert Hall for Israel’s 70th birthday. Almost 5,000 people attended, but in spite of a fantastic list of speakers and comprehensive advertising, hardly any Jews came. The emphasis placed by leading Jewish communal groups on interfaith work has sometimes led to us working with, or seeking to work with, others who hate Israel. This needs to change. The National Jewish Assembly intends to work closely with those who share our love for Israel, whatever religion they may be. Am Yisrael Chai! Mangel marks 90th birthday at Auschwitz BY DAVID SAFFER

Holocaust survivor Rabbi Nissen Mangel returned to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp with 100 members of his family to mark his 90th birthday. Mangel was 10-years-old when he arrived at Auschwitz and sent to the infamous Dr. Josef Mengele. Very few children survived Mengele’s inhumane experiments, slave labour or forced death marches. But Mangel did and has led an extraordinary life as director of Chabad-Lubavitch of Greater Dayton in Ohio. With Israel attempting to destroy terror group Hamas, he reportedly told Chabad: “Hitler tried the final solution and he failed, and the Nazis of today, Hamas will fail as well.” Mangel’s children serve Chabad in leadership positions around the world and had retraced their father’s early life from being born in Kosice, Slovakia. His grandchildren also wanted to make the trip so planned it as his landmark birthday approached. Last month Rabbi Mangel’s wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren duly made the once in a lifetime sojourn. They started in Krakow, Poland, to visit the resting place of Rabbi Elimelech

of Lizensk, to whom Rabbi Mangel traces his ancestry, and continued to Auschwitz. In 1944, Mangel was deported by the Nazis to Bratislava with his father, mother and elder sister. He was sent to the Sered labor camp near Bratislava,

Musings of a non-activist Dear Editor It all began about three weeks ago when I took my Magen David out of my jewellery box and placed it prominently around my neck. I wanted to identify publicly that I am a Jew and I stand with Israel.

Fast forward to Sunday 19 November, and I am flicking through the NEU (National Education Union) magazine. There, on a bold green background, sits the NEU call for an immediate ceasefire and ‘ongoing peace settlement that secures the release of Israeli hostages, ends the bombardment of Gaza and restores the flow of vital humanitarian aid’. No

condemnation of the unprovoked terror attack on October 7, and no call to end the continual bombardment of Israeli towns by Hamas rockets. In other words, a classic ‘we cease; they fire’. I emailed my excellent union reps, and yes, I will be emailing the NEU. Sunday 19 November was also the date of the Ajex Annual Remembrance Parade and Ceremony. I have never attended before; but this year it’s different. I want to stand up and march and be counted. So too did many others, as my colleague commented that she had never seen so many marching. Why? Because we live in a country where our Prime Minister and our Leader of the Opposition have both stood up and unequivocally supported Israel. Because we want to show our gratitude to the Jewish servicemen and women who fought and died for Great Britain, and that, for the most part, Britain has been a safe haven for Jews. As a first timer, the Parade and Ceremony were both very moving. All being well, I

In Warsaw, his grandson Mendel Mangel linked the visit to the Israel-Gaza war. “As we toured Auschwitz, there were many other groups visiting as well,” he told Chabad. “They were asked, as everyone is, to respect the solemnity of the place, ground made sacred by the blood of millions murdered for being Jewish. And there we were, singing songs of thanks to G-d. They were there to learn about the atrocities that took place there, and it’s so important that the world know about them, but we were there not only to remember the destruction, but to to celebrate that G-d will never abandon us, that the Jewish people will always survive, come what may.” There were many tears as the family went to the gas chambers and barracks before Mangel found family names in a book of victims at Auschwitz. During Minchah, Mangel recited kaddish for his father murdered during the Holocaust. “Every Jew who survived that inferno is a miracle,” he said. And quoting his late father, Mangel added: “My father wanted to teach the next generation. He wanted to tell his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren his story so they should know that despite the hatred and persecution, Jewish life continues.”

hope to back at the Cenotaph in 2024. Sunday 19 November was also the date of the Never Again Is Now vigil organised by Christian Action against Antisemitism. So back to Downing Street with our flags and posters held high to support these incredible Christian groups who have come out so equivocally in support of Israel. We sang, we chanted and were privileged to hear from the incredibly brave relatives of hostages, as well as from speaker after speaker from different Christian groups. This was the 7/10 Human Chain Project; everyone shone the lights from their phones and electric candles to light up the darkness, peacefully demonstrating that the 240 hostages WILL NOT be forgotten. It was a long Sunday, yet a very important and moving Sunday. Next Sunday there is National Solidarity March against Antisemitism. I’ll be there – will you? Jeremy Green

Knesset members join ICJP in Washington BY ADAM MOSES

The International Council of Jewish Parliamentarians convened in Washington for the first time since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. The session, led by ICJP Chair Sen. Jacky Rosen, included members of the Knesset, US senators and representatives. The World Jewish Congress initiative held briefings for senior White House and State Department officials. The delegation discussed international solidarity with Israel, hostages held by Hamas, rising antisemitism globally including on university campuses. WJC President Ronald S. Lauder addressed the issues at the Renwick Gallery he welcomed US President Biden’s response to the crisis in Israel. He noted: “I have never seen a president of the United States be as strong for the Jewish people. The majority of both parties support aid for Israel. It’s the first bipartisan agreement we’ve seen in a long time.” Speaking about antisemitism globally, Lauder said campus antisemitism was a “defining battlefield” and “generational challenge” for Jewish communities. Sen. Rosen called for shared approaches, noting: “Following October 7th, incidents of antisemitic harassment, vandalism and violence have spiked worldwide. Those who commit these vile, egregious acts want to scare and intimidate Jewish people.” Rosen convened Jewish legislators

around the world to address the rise in antisemitism. “The international community must stand together and continue building a brighter future where no family is afraid to send their kid to school or attend Shabbat services,” he said. The ICJP joined families of hostages calling for their release on humanitarian grounds. Family members spoke about their experiences. The ICJP backed international solidarity with Israel, lawmakers shared legislative solutions and committed ongoing support for the State of Israel. Israel’s Minister of Economy Nir Barkat told the gathering: “With antisemitism rising all over, a secure Israel is the best backup for Jews around the world. That bond is represented in this room.” In other WJC news, Moshe Zuares, Israel’s Football Association president spoke of the impact of the Gaza war on the national football team trying to qualify for the 2024 European Championships during an event at the Rumbach Synagogue in Budapest. Zuares said that the team was a “beacon of resilience” for Israeli society. ‘Home’ matches were being played in Hungary. “Football brings together people from different backgrounds, religions and world views,” Zuares said. “When players enter the dressing room, a human melting pot, they emerge as a unified team, whose shared purpose is greater than the variance of its members and greatly empowered

by it.” He added, “From the minute the war broke out, the IFA took upon itself a major role in supporting, unifying and encouraging the Israeli society. We raised donations, visited hospitals and IDF bases, conducted special tournaments for children who survived and were evacuated from their homes, donated hundreds of pairs of football shoes and balls to people who, during and after the war, will go back doing what they love most.” The event discussed the role of sport in society during times of adversity. The panel, moderated by sports historian Adi Rubinstein, included diplomats, sports ambassadors and former international players. Discussions included strengthening bilateral relations and impact of sports on community resilience. Prof. Dr. Andor Grósz, WJC vice president and president of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Hungary,

noted: “Today’s conversations shed light not only on the power of sports to uplift and unite but also on the critical role they play in fostering dialogue and understanding across different communities. We are supporters of Israel’s national team and country during this time of crisis.” The Israeli national side ultimately failed to qualify for the Germany finals following its concluding games.

Replace fear with purpose following massacre

Michal Oshman

Israel-born guest speaker Michal Oshman advised employees to “replace fear with purpose” in the workplace in the wake of the October 7 Hamas massacre at a Resource event. Around 40 clients of the organisation’s network attended the gathering at the Finchley headquarters. Oshman has played a pivotal role in shaping culture and leadership at global companies such as TikTok and

Meta. She said: “There is a difference between fear and anxiety, the way to overcome fear is to normalise it. We all have what it takes to overcome challenges, but it is really important to stay connected to the community but even more important to stay connected to the wider community.” She added: “It is tempting in these troubling times to isolate ourselves, but we should not hide away.” The former IDF officer and mother of four is a motivational speaker and best-selling author. Oshman feels the current HR playbook isn’t working, noting, “I am constantly speaking to heads of HR, diversity and inclusion who tell me, ‘We don’t know what to do’. That is not acceptable.”

Oshman warned that if things get better in Israel in the short to medium term, the Diaspora will have to deal with the situation for much longer and social media posts were a big problem. A trusting manager was important as colleagues can be deeply hurt by posts. Victoria Sterman, Resource CEO said: “We’re all feeling sad, frightened and anxious about the situation in Israel and Gaza. It has an impact on our daily lives, our interactions with friends and particularly colleagues. Michal was the perfect speaker to help us navigate this difficult time with sound advice and personal anecdotes.” Kate Fulton interviewed Oshman over Zoom.

1 23+ points or Game going hand ie 10 playing tricks in a Major 2. Negative reply 0 - 7 points 3. Lead directing 4. Balanced 25/26 confirmed 5. Transfer to Hearts Lead 10 South's 3NT rebid promised 25/26 high-card points balanced hand. North judged his hand was not as likely to be of as much value in a No Trump contact as it would be in a heart contract, so he transferred to Hearts. West led the 10. East took the ace and king and continued with the 8, clear suit-preference for spades. West ruffed the third round of diamonds and exited with a spade to East's queen and declarer's king. Declarer then cashed the ace and king of trumps, noting that both opponents followed. Declarer saw that the contract would depend on playing the club suit without loss. While the a priori odds favoured cashing the ace and king of clubs, declarer decided to gather more information first, despite the very slight risk of suffering an adverse ruff: he cashed the ace of clubs and the ace of spades. After this declarer ruffed the 10 high in dummy. After East discarded a diamond on this trick, declarer drew East's remaining trump with dummy's queen of hearts. Declarer now knew that East had begun with two spades, three trumps and five diamonds, leaving that thereby confirming that East started with an original length of three cards in clubs. So declarer led a low club from dummy. East followed with a low club and declarer brought home his contract by playing the jack from hand. Many players would have overlooked the possibility of gathering more information about the defenders hands. They would have ruffed the ten of spades instead of cashing the ace first, and drawn the last trump before playing clubs from the top and finding themselves one trick short of making the game.

Rabbi and Rebbetzin Black of the Kenton Synagogue hosted Menasche Scharf and family, who were guests of the Shul in the Park. In addition to enjoying the Shabbos meals together, Shabbos Chaye Sarah was enhanced by the community’s enthusiastic participation during the Davening and learning. On Motzei Shabbat, Kenton Synagogue held a musical Havdalah followed by a fundraiser for the people of Eretz Yisroel affected by the current conflict. The Pizza-based Melava Malka was enhanced by Rebbetzin Black and her team’s prowess in kneading, rolling and flipping the breads – all the way to seasoning the Pizza to perfection. It was a great surprise to the seventy attendees when the Travelling Chasidim arrived all the way from Stamford Hill, to lead the singing and dancing. They also engaged in schmoozing and even storytelling. Rabbi Yehuda Leib Black of Kenton United Synagogue introduced the evening and

the Rebbetzin passionately encouraged all attendees to participate in the fundraiser. Divrei Torah were also given by Rabbi Gidon Wieder from Hendon, who spoke about unity – incidentally one of the main ingredients that make up the Travelling Chassidim formula. Rabbi Wieder also spoke about an innovative initiative: matching up members of Kenton United Synagogue with members of Jewish communities in other areas of London. Reb Shimon Akiva Hirschler spoke about the situation in the holy land and one of the Travelling Chassidim sang an ‘oldie’: Al Tiro MiPachad Pisom - after explaining the words of the song and the background to it, beseeching the assembled to internalise its message, so that positive thoughts generated by this song could be beamed to the unfortunate hostages and gird them with the strength to withstand and ultimately survive this harrowing ordeal. The event gave a morale-boost to the Kenton Community, who have family, relatives and friends who have been called up or are volunteering.

Nearly 200 people came together last week in Radlett United Synagogue to make challah, dedicated to the soldiers fighting in the war in Israel, as well as the hostages. Rabbi Nick and Shira Kett started their roles in Radlett as the new rabbinic couple just over a week ago. Rabbi Nick Kett said: “This was our first large event since joining the

Rabbanit Eshel’s inspiring words resonated with the attendees, emphasizing the importance of standing together and supporting one another, especially during challenging times. The gift packages will be sent to several places in Israel, including to women of the Shlomit community, which is twinned with Manchester. The recipients include women facing the unique challenges of navigating daily life while their

husbands are serving in the army. This includes women attending the mikveh and then returning home alone, as well as those managing households while their husbands are engaged in milluim (reservist duties in the IDF). “We are immensely proud of the women in our community who came together with open hearts and hands to create these meaningful gift packages. It is a beautiful expression of achdut and chesed, and it reinforces the strong bond between our community in Manchester and our family in Israel,” remarked Rabbi Benjy Rickman, Mizrachi’s Rav in Manchester. The event not only showcased the generosity of spirit within the Manchester Jewish community but also highlighted the ongoing commitment to supporting fellow Jews, both locally and globally.

Chief Rabbi Visit to Sage LSJS brings debate to the

Sage Nursing home in Golders Green, was delighted to welcome the Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis to their home on Tuesday 7th November. To begin his visit the Chief Rabbi visited one of the residents in her room. This resident had requested to meet the Chief Rabbi as the Chief Rabbi’s wife Valerie had been a flower girl at her wedding in Bulawayo, Zambia. Rabbi Mirvis then made his way to the Sage lounge where he was introduced to the eagerly waiting crowd of residents

and their families by Sage’s CEO Adrian Jacobs. Rabbi Mirvis addressed the large crowd about the importance of chesed, especially during these challenging times, connecting this special Mitzvah to the lives of the residents. After his speech Rabbi Mirvis spoke to each resident individually, greeting and forging a connection with as many people as possible. It was amazing that of the 60 residents at Sage so many had previous encounters with the Chief Rabbi and were able to remind him of those occasions. The residents were touched and moved by Rabbi Mirvis’s words and warmth. At the end of the visit a vote of thanks was given by the chair of Sage Trustee’s Stephen Goldberg, who thanked the Chief Rabbi for taking time out of his extremely busy schedule to come and meet the residents. A sumptuous afternoon tea, beautifully prepared by the Sage catering team was then enjoyed by all present. PHOTO: OCR

Shalva solidarity dinner

On the seventh of October, Israel and the global Jewish community experienced the most devastating loss since the establishment of the state of Israel. The Shalva National Centre, was immediately asked to open its doors as a national crisis response centre by the home front in order to help over a thousand people from the South including some one hundred children with disabilities. “When the home front contacted us to become the national crisis centre, we obviously jumped at the opportunity,” says Kalman Samuels Founder and President of Shalva, who has dedicated the last three decades of his life to building

Shalva, together with his wife Malki. “Our philosophy has always been to be in service to those in need, no matter the cost.” Samuels shares that the extra cost to Shalva for the ‘Open hearts, Open doors’ campaign is approximately $3.3 million and this is only till the end of the year. “ Our emergency campaign started immediately and sums up our response to this tragic crisis.” “It was therefore imperative that our WE ARE ONE dinners went ahead on Monday and Tuesday night this week,” Says Gaby Hirsch, Chief Development Officer of Shalva. “ Although we debated running our fundraising dinners held at Tish in Belsize Park, Simon Sterling, Chair of the dinner committee was passionate in his belief that we needed to harness the deep feelings of solidarity that those in our community feel for Shalva and for Israel and therefore encouraged us to go ahead with the

emergency campaign ahead of the event. This was to ensure that Shalva had the necessary funds immediately to help those in crisis. “Our commuPHOTO: DINA TANGI nity is strongly Zionistic,” says Hirsch. “When Israel is at war, Jewish hearts worldwide feel that searing pain. Our London community gave us so much more than their financial gifts, they gifted us their hearts and for that we are more grateful than words can say.” The special evening’s food was prepared by Israeli Michelin star Chef Gal Ben Moshe who currently resides in Berlin. Ben Moshe is a great advocate for Shalva and from the podium he shared that the reason for his sentiments stems from his god-daughter being born with Down syndrome. He says, “ Shalva shines as a beacon of light to those families affected by children with

disabilities. When my god-daughter was born, it was then that my great love affair with Shalva began where I told them, that my services would always be on offer to them, free of charge as a token of my great admiration for the fantastic work they do to assist those with disabilities.” Debbie Fisher, Chairperson of British Friends of Shalva was delighted with the outcome of the events, “Jewish solidarity is truly to be admired. We are a resilient nation and Shalva is really a microcosm of that resilience. We are so grateful for the support received and hope and pray for peace in our holy land.”

StandWithUs UK and Embassy of Israel hosts roundtable with student leaders from top universities StandWithUs UK were proud to facilitate a much needed roundtable discussion with 26 student leaders from across the UK, and representatives from the Israeli Embassy. The charity’s initiative of pairing students with key diplomats reinforces the significance of ensuring campus leaders are at the forefront of such dialogue. Since the atrocities on October 7th, and the outbreak of the war against Hamas, Jewish and Zionist students have faced incredible social pressure, intimidation and even violence from their peers. Many have witnessed first-hand accounts of ‘celebrations’ and ‘justifications’ for October 7th, which has also caused immense distress and worry. The roundtable hosted at the Embassy was key in ensuring that student voices are being heard and taken into account when it comes to policy and decision making at all levels. The diplomats present shared what they are currently doing to alleviate the situation, and also provided students with key tools and advice for when it comes to advocating for Israel. Notable moments included students sharing their experiences in coping with biased Student Unions who act against their charitable objectives, witnessing the tearing down of hostage posters as well as a rise in blatant campus antisemitism. Long Lasting Luz BY MRS. SHIRA SIMLES

One of the most mysterious places on earth is the city of Luz. Chazal note that the malach hamavet had no entry rights to this city and its inhabitants lived forever. What do we know of this city? And what was the significance of renaming the city Bet El? In truth, notes Rav Scheinerman in Ohel Moshe, it is a mistake to think that a person can live forever and escape the Angel of Death. Chazal tell us that when a resident of Luz got tired of life he would leave the city and thus die. In renaming the city, Ya’akov Avinu teaches us that the only way to achieve eternal life is through Torah; creating a ‘Bet El’ connects one to spiritual immortality. Rav Weiss in Mishbetzot Zahav examines the link between ‘Luz’ and ‘Bet El’. The midrash explains that one who entered the city of Luz was vibrant and fresh in their mitzvot like a luz tree. This symbolizes the need to connect with Torah through passion and excitement, as if it was given anew every day. The other quality of the luz (hazelnut) is that

with angels ascending and descending upon it. Sulam can be an acronym for ‘seudah levayah malka,’ the meal that transitions the Shabbat angels to heaven and the weekday angels coming to escort us into our new week. The seudat melave malka is the meal that allows us to take the kedushah of Shabbat and use it to infuse the coming week. It is at this auspicious time that Ya’akov Avinu symbolically erected a stone and named this place ‘Bet El.’ In doing so, he transmitted the message that one day the third Beit HaMikdash will stand in this place, the place that the nations will say, “Let us go up to… the house of the G-d of Ya’akov” (Yeshayahu 2:3). Truly this Beit HaMikdash will last forever and Luz will be transformed into the ultimate ‘House of Hashem.’

”Everything in this world exists in three dimensions: time, place and body” it has no opening to crack it. This is symbolic of the city’s dwellers who were careful to guard their mouths. As such, negative forces had difficulty entering and causing harm. A person whose mouth is a channel for Torah and mitzvot, who is careful not to bring harm to others with their speech, is a true ‘house of Hashem.’ Rav Eisenberger in Miselot Hanevi’im explains that everything in this world exists in three dimensions: time, place, and body. If there is a place which has this long-lasting quality, it must exist in the other dimensions as well. Indeed, within each of our bodies is a bone at the back of our necks with the same name – ‘luz.’ The Kaf HaChayim explains that when Adam sinned and ate from the eitz haDa’at, all of man’s bones were affected

with the exception of the luz bone. Since this bone was not tainted by the effects of the sin it is eternal. We are taught that the seudat melave malka nourishes this bone and it is from this bone that one will be resurrected in the future. Motzaei Shabbat is a time when we sing about Eliyahu HaNavi who himself never died. It is also a time of longing for Mashiach and the rebuilding of the Beit HaMikdash whose remnant, the Kotel, has housed the shechinah for all time. The Slonimer Rebbe in Netivot Shalom finds hints of these ideas at the beginning of our parasha. Ya’akov Avinu leaves Be’er Sheva, the source of seven which is a reference to Shabbat. He journeys toward Charan, an allusion to the anger of the world, the regular work week. On his way he sees a sulam, a ladder, in his dream

born to them with unusual-patterned skin. Yaakov becomes very prosperous. Lavan’s sons accuse Yaakov of theft. G-d tells Yaakov to return to Cana’an immediately. Rachel and Leah agree to leave.

6th Aliya (Shishi) – 31:17-42

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – BEREISHIT 28:10-22

On Yaakov’s journey to Charan, he falls asleep and dreams of a ladder resting on the ground and reaching up to heaven, with angels ascending and descending. G-d is at the top of the ladder, telling Yaakov that he will inherit the Land and that he will have plentiful offspring. Yaakov wakes up, having realised the holiness of the place, which is where the Temple would later be built (Rashi). He builds an altar and takes a vow committing to serve G-d fully (Ramban).

2nd Aliya (Levi) – 29:1-17

Yaakov travels eastwards. He sees a well in a field, covered by a large stone. The local shepherds tell Yaakov that the daughter of his uncle Lavan is approaching. Yaakov moves the boulder blocking

the well and waters Rachel’s flock. He kisses Rachel and weeps.

3rd Aliya (Shlishi) – 29:18-30:13

Yaakov wants to marry Rachel, the younger sister of Leah, and offers to work for Lavan for seven years as payment. Although Lavan agrees, when the time comes, he tricks Yaakov, swapping Rachel for Leah. Lavan defends his actions and agrees to let Yaakov marry Rachel a week later, if he works for another seven years. Leah, unlike Rachel, is blessed with children: Reuven, Shimon, Levi and Yehuda. Rachel gives Yaakov her maidservant Bilhah to conceive ‘on her behalf’. Bilhah gives birth to Dan and Naftali. Leah then gives Yaakov her maidservant Zilpah, who gives birth to Gad and Asher.

4th Aliya (Revi’i) – 30:14-27

Reuven finds some dudaim (jasmine – Rashi) in the field and brings them to his mother Leah. Rachel asks for some of the jasmine. Leah agrees, but only in return for the right to spend that night with Yaakov. Leah conceives and has a fifth son, Yissachar. This is followed by a sixth, Zevulun. She then has a daughter, Dinah. Rachel finally has a child, Yosef. Yaakov demands that Lavan let him return home after all his years of work. Point to Consider: What is the connection between the birth of Yosef and Yaakov’s demand to leave? (see Rashi to 30:25)

5th Aliya (Chamishi) – 30:28-31:16

Lavan asks Yaakov to stay on and to specify his payment. Yaakov replies that he will keep the plain-looking animals currently in the flock, and any offspring

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

Yaakov’s entire family leaves. Lavan finds this out three days later and chases after Yaakov, catching up with him at Mount Gilad. G-d appears to Lavan in a dream, telling him not to harm Yaakov. Lavan criticises Yaakov for fleeing and for stealing his idols. Yaakov denies the latter charge, unaware that Rachel was hiding them. Yaakov also defends his record in Lavan’s house, where he worked tirelessly, despite Lavan’s trickery.

7th Aliya (Shevi’i) – 31:43-32:3

Lavan proposes a peace treaty, which Yaakov agrees to, symbolised by a stone monument built by Yaakov’s sons. Lavan and Yaakov part ways.

Haftarah

The haftarah, according to the general United Synagogue custom, is taken from the Book of Hoshea (ch. 12-14). The prophet Hoshea rebukes the tribe of Ephraim for their rebelliousness, warning them of the dire consequences. However, they will ultimately return to G-d, Who will welcome them back.

Dear Rabbi I refer to your answer to the question, “How to cope in a hostile workplace? published in last week’s edition of the Jewish Weekly. I take issue with your comment, “Being anti-Israel does not necessarily equate with being anti-Semitic.” I am sure that I have read in your column before, and certainly heard and read many Rabbis (and other learned Jewish writers) explain that Israel being extant as our Jewish Homeland is fundamental to Judaism. Denying this is therefore anti-Semitic. Being anti the policies of any prevailing Israeli government (as for any other country) is not anti-Semitic. I would welcome your response. Stephen Dear Stephen My definition of “anti-Israel” does not mean being opposed to the existence of the country or the Jewish presence in the country, or even it being considered the Jewish homeland, as indeed it is. Denying Jewish people the right to their own country to call home is anti-Semitic.

It obviously means being opposed to Israeli policies or governmental positions. That is not necessarily anti-Semitic. If people want to march against what they might deem injustices of the Israeli (or any other) government that is not anti-Semitic per se. If, when they’re marching, they use slogans like “from the river to the sea” or carry posters with a Magen David and a swastika, or even when they describe Israel’s right to self-defence as a “genocide,” then that lays bare their anti-Semitic malevolence and true Jew hating bias. I will reiterate and clarify: Many self-proclaimed anti-Zionists, insist that you can be against the policies of Israel without being against the Jewish people. On the face of it, that may be true but the hard fact is that Israel is known as the Jewish homeland, and Jewish people see Israel as a safe-haven from persecution. So, while separate, the two are inextricably linked, to such an extent that one is invariably seen as an extension of the other. Hence the question: What motivates the Israel haters? Why, for example, does Israel get such special attention when it is in fact the only democracy in the region, constantly attacked in an arbitrary manner when its Arab neighbours massacre

their own without any protest, boycott or condemnation at the UN? Here we have the two standards with which the world measures morality. The UN, the academic world, the liberal voices concerned with human rights, the European politicians, are suddenly silent in the presence of the worst atrocities; yet whatever Israel does it is condemned immediately for trying to survive and not allowing its enemies to destroy it. That just proves something far more sinister than an alleged care for human rights.

WHEN YOUR NEIGHBOUR TURNS UGLY Dear Rabbi Does it not concern you when there are so many people coming out of the woodwork denouncing Israel or Jews? I refer to business people, people from the performing arts, etc. It’s shocking how people are showing their true colours in these troubling times. Casey Dear Casey Of course it concerns me, greatly. This sort of hater invariably co-exists with the Jew – and tolerates the Jew and it is only when opportunity lends itself – when it becomes fashionable to vent the hatred – when it becomes excusable to boycott – then the same professor who shared your common room, or business colleague who worked with you – or neighbour who greeted you – will suddenly rear their ugly side.

But I take heart in the fact that we live in a very small world today. Everything said is being recorded on mobile phones; everything written is screenshot and circulated before it can be deleted. The end result is that a stock analyst in the States, caught tearing off posters of the hostages and making disparaging remarks about Jews, was immediately fired from his job; a pilot for United Airlines who posted justification of the October 7th massacre was suspended pending an investigation; a renowned actress in Hollywood who referred to Israel’s actions as genocidal has been laid off by her agency. I hope I don’t sound mean-spirited when I say I take a certain amount of pleasure in watching justice being done.

Waking Up in the Morning, and Dressing

Rav Chaim’s Tikkun Chatzos is worn out from use.

1. When Rav Chaim woke up, he recited Birchos HaTorah (see below, recited Tikkun Chatzos in a beseech 3), and then ing manner. He sat on a regular not remove his shoes or place chair, and did ashes on his head. He general ly recited only Tikkun Leah, not Tikkun Rachel or any additional supplications. See Shulchan Aruch 1:3 and Mishnah Berurah 9. In recent years, Rav Chaim usually awakened shortly after midnigh t to recite Tikkun Chatzos and to learn without interrup tion until the morning. In the earlier years, Rav Chaim would sometimes learn until very late at night and consequently wake up somewhat later. Nevertheless, if he awoke before alos hashachar, he would still recite Tikkun Chatzos, even though it was past midnight. To those who inquired with regard to Tikkun Chatzos, he likewise ruled that it may be recited any time before daybreak. If it happene d that Rav Chaim awoke after alos hashachar, however, he would not recite the Tikkun.

Rav Chaim explained that the reason he did not recite Tikkun Rachel was because he usually did not recite Tachanun, since he often serves as a sandek or a mohel davens in his minyan. When Tachanun is not recited, neither is Tikkun Rachel. Rav Chaim was asked if the Chazon Ish said Tikkun Chatzos, and he answere not know whether the Chazon d that he does Ish recited Tikkun Chatzos, but his father, the Steipler Gaon, did recite it.

Includes hundreds of photos!

2. Rav Chaim made every effort to be learning or davening during the times when night turns into day and day turns into night, as the Shelah Hakadosh wrote. See Mishnah Berurah 1:2.

A Spiritual Pitfall (Part 2) BY RABBI SHMUEL REICHMAN

In our previous article, we began exploring deeper nature of Korach’s sin. To review, as many Jewish thinkers explain, Korach’s sin lay in his pantheistic view. He believed that the physical world, as well as all the people within it, are part of Hashem Himself, and therefore already spiritually perfect. Korach says, “Kol ha’Eidah kulam kedoshim — The entire nation is holy.” There is no difference between me and Moshe, or me and Aharon, or the Jewish People and their leaders. Everything is Hashem, everything is one. Within pantheism, there are no boundaries or distinctions and nothing higher to connect to. Hashem is only connected to the here and now, and therefore we do not need to look for anything transcendent, higher, or beyond this physical world.

Straightening the Bent Path

The Midrash fills in the background behind Korach’s contentions, detailing the specific arguments that Korach brought to support his case (Bamidbar Rabbah 18:3.). • Korach challenged Moshe: “Should a room full of sefarim require a mezuzah on its doorpost?” In other words, should a room full of holy objects require the finishing touch of a mezuzah affixed upon its doorpost? • Similarly, Korach asked: “Should a four-cornered garment made completely of techeiles require techeiles in its strings?” After all, if the garment itself is made completely of techeiles, why should it require additional techeiles in its strings? • These questions preface Korach’s main question: “If the entire Jewish nation is holy and exalted — “kol ha’Eidah kulam kedoshim” (Bamidbar 16:3) — why should you, Moshe and Aharon, hold uniquely exalted positions of power? In other words, why do we need you as spiritual leaders if we are all spiritually perfect? If Korach’s mistake indeed lay in his pantheistic worldview, how were his questions and assertions a reflection of this? As we previously explained, the purpose of techeiles and tzitzis is to straighten the bent path and help connect us back to Hashem, our Source. Let us briefly recall the parable we mentioned: Imagine you are walking along a straight path. At any point along the path, if you turn around, you can see exactly where you came from. However, if the path suddenly takes a sharp turn and bends off its straight course, then if you turn around, you can no longer see the starting point of your journey. The same is true of the physical world in which we live. Originally, the physical world loyally and perfectly reflected its spiritual root. When you looked around, you saw and experienced Hashem, and you knew that He created the world; it was like looking

back down a straight path, directly back to the Source of the world. However, when Adam sinned, the entire world fell. The world became a bent path, and it is no longer clear where we come from. When we look around, we no longer see a universe that clearly and loyally reflects its G-dliness; instead, we see a physical world of multiplicity and twoness As we previously explained, Tzitzis are only required on a cornered garment. It is only when the edge of the garment begins to bend that we are obligated to attach tzitzis to the corners. The straight lines of the tzitzis straighten the bent path of the garment. Thus, tzitzis represent our ability to source ourselves back to Hashem, even on a bent path. Halachah dictates that once the garment bends (once the physical world no longer perfectly reflects its spiritual root), we must straighten the bent path with strings of techeiles, helping us source ourselves back to Hashem. Korach claimed that a four-cornered garment made up of techeiles is already spiritual, and therefore does not require additional strings of techeiles. Essentially, Korach claimed that spirituality can be self-contained, confined only to the garment (the physical world) itself, without any need to connect to a higher source beyond the physical world. Similarly, the purpose of a mezuzah is to connect your physical makom, your physical room, back to its spiritual source, Hashem (Rambam, Mishneh Torah, Mezuzah 6:13). Whenever you enter a room and pass a mezuzah, you are immediately reminded to source yourself back to Hashem. Fascinatingly, many halachic authorities hold that the mezuzah should be placed on a slanted, bent angle on top of the doorpost. While this may appear to contradict the principle we just presented about straightening the bent path, it actually adds another layer of depth to it. While the mezuzah may appear to be crooked, this is only according to our limited perception. In reality, the world itself is crooked — a fallen vestige of a world that once fully and loyally reflected Hashem. We are mistaken if we assume that our current, limited perception of the world is objective truth. Instead, we must learn to realign ourselves and our perception with the truth, instead of trying to align the truth (the straight path) with our crooked and bent perception. Rather than bending the truth to fit our world view, we must learn to fit ourselves into the truth.

Rejecting Our Mission

This was Korach’s sin: Korach claimed that a room full of sefarim was already a spiritual room and therefore did not require a mezuzah. It did not need to be connected back to any outside spiritual source, as it was already perfect. This represents Korach’s claim that the physical world itself is already independently spiritual and perfect and does not require a connection to any higher spiritual source. Essentially, Korach rejected the idea that we must straighten the bent

path, claiming instead that the physical world is already straight, free of any need to be further straightened. This is what Korach meant by “kol ha’Eidah kulam kedoshim, namely that all of the Jewish People are already perfect, and as a result, Moshe and Aharon had no right to maintain any form of leadership. A leader is only necessary if a nation needs direction, but a nation that is perfect does not require any hierarchy or leadership.

A New Punishment

We can now understand why Moshe asked Hashem to create a “chiddush,” a completely novel punishment for Korach. From a pantheistic viewpoint, everything in this world is already perfect as it is Hashem. Consequently, there can be no chiddush; there can be absolutely nothing new. The logic behind this is simple: If there is nothing outside the system — no transcendent force beyond the physical world — there can be nothing new that comes into the world. Once the system is fundamentally and inherently limited to what it already is, with no higher outside force that can affect it, nothing new can be added. Therefore, Moshe asked Hashem to add something new to the world — a novel phenomenon, thereby punishing Korach middah k’neged middah (measure for measure). His very claim would be disproven through his punishment. He claimed that there is nothing outside the limited framework of the physical world and that nothing new can be added; as a result, Hashem created a new punishment just for him. We must still ask, though, why Hashem specifically chose to have the earth swallow Korach up. Is there a deeper meaning to this specific punishment?

Korach’s Pitfall

Korach’s sin can be most clearly defined as gaavah (haughtiness). In essence, Korach claimed that he, and all of Klal Yisrael, were no different from Hashem. Korach single-handedly raised himself up to the level of perfection, of G-dliness. While there is a kernel of truth in this idea, as we are all created b’tzelem Elokim (in the image of Hashem), Korach distorted this principle and took it to the extreme. This is why Korach’s punishment was so appropriate. He claimed that he was perfect, and in so doing, he raised himself up to infinite heights. As a consequence, Hashem opened up the earth, swallowing Korach and sending him to the very lowest of depths imaginable. Korach’s ego and haughtiness sunk him, quite literally, to the lowest, most insignificant level possible.

Always a Chance for Redemption

The pasuk in Tehillim says, “Tzaddik ka’tamar yifrach — The righteous will bloom like a palm tree” (Tehillim 92:13). The last letters from each of these words spell Korach (‫תמָר יִפְרָ ח‬ ָ ַ ‫)קרח = צַדִיק ּכ‬. While Korach was swallowed up by the

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

earth, he was like a planted seed that would later sprout fruits. As a matter of fact, Chazal state that Korach’s children survived Korach’s punishment, as they did teshuvah as they were being swallowed up (Bamidbar 26:11; Megillah 14a; Sanhedrin 110a). Can you think of anything more profound and inspiring than this? Korach’s entire claim lay in his belief that humans are equal to Hashem, and are therefore already perfect. Since we are perfect, we not only don’t need to change and grow, but we can’t. Something that is perfect cannot change or grow; it must remain static. The children of Korach survived by doing teshuvah. Teshuvah is the ultimate expression of the human ability to change, to grow, to transform from one state of being to another. The seed was planted, and the righteous palm trees sprouted. It is no surprise that many years later, Shmuel HaNavi came from the seed of Korach, a tzaddik who devoted his life to ascending the spiritual ladder of growth and traveled across Eretz Yisrael inspiring others to do the same. (See Bamidbar Rabbah 3:11. Both Shmuel and Korach came from Kehas.)

Becoming Perfect

We aren’t perfect; we are becoming perfect. This is why we can feel so capable and then so powerless, so brilliant and then so worthless, so full and then so empty, in such a short span of time. We aren’t perfect; we are on a journey of becoming and of actualizing our fullest potential. Sometimes we feel and fully embrace the G-dliness within us, and sometimes we feel the void, realizing our shortcomings and yearn to become more. We aren’t Hashem, but we are meant to strive every day to come closer and closer to Him. Korach’s pitfall resulted in his actual “pit-fall.” May we be inspired to learn from Korach’s mistake and harness the beauty of being human. Our humanity is our unique G-dliness. We have the ability to grow, to become, to change, to evolve, and to actualize more and more of our tzelem Elokim and achieve our destiny in this world. . YOUR FINANCIAL SERVICES COMPLIANCE EXPERTS

EXPERT ADVICE

FINANCIAL SERVICES (FCA) COMPLIANCE

Dear Jacob Having worked as a mortgage broker in a local company for the last few years, I would now like to set up my own business providing mortgage broking services. Would you recommend starting out as an Appointed Representative or proceeding straight to direct authorisation? Moshe Hi Moshe Many new brokers choose to initially form their business as an Appointed Representative (AR), as this means their Principal Firm will take on the role of providing compliance oversight and support. Whilst your Principal Firm will require you to adhere to strict processes and rules, conversely, this will usually lead to less challenging requirements for you to complete yourself, such as obtaining Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII), submitting FCA reports, undertaking audits, etc. In return for their involvement and oversight however, your Principal Firm will usually charge relatively high ongoing fees. If you instead choose to immediately pursue becoming Directly Authorised (DA), you will have complete authority over your own activities and compliance oversight, but it will be your own responsibility to ensure you are complying with the FCA regulations. You will therefore find that most DA firms require ongoing compliance support, meaning you need to consider this cost as well as other DA costs such as obtaining your own PII and paying your own FCA Fees, etc. Finally, it is also important to note, that it is currently taking the FCA up to 12 months to process a mortgage broking DA application, at a cost of £2,500. In contrast it can take as little as 4 weeks with far lower initial fees, to become an AR. At Richdale we specialise in supporting both new and established brokers on this journey, whether it be as their Principal Firm or by supporting them in becoming directly authorised, and providing all the necessary ongoing support thereafter.

Bring light to Israel this Chanukah Chanukah feels different this year. It may feel a little harder to get excited. So Myisrael has come up with a way for you to mark Chanukah and support vulnerable people in Israel at the same time. For one night of Chanukah you can choose one of four charitable gifts in honour of a loved one. We will send them a physical or e-card letting them know of your donation. 100% of all donations go directly to helping those in Israel with the greatest need.

There are four gifts including a therapy doll that will help a child who is dealing with trauma to feel less anxious.
