Israel Defence Forces have destroyed a major Hamas tunnel network connecting the north and south of the Gaza Strip. The tunnel is reportedly hundreds of metres long, 90 metres deep with around 5,700 shafts. Tragically, the IDF announced yesterday its ground operation had a death toll in Gaza of 192 troops and 526 since the October 7 terror attack by Hamas. US Secretary of State Blinken said Arab countries claim they won’t rebuild Gaza for it to be “levelled again”. Three members of a Judai and Samaria terror cell, including leader Abdallah Abu Shalal, were killed in Nablus by a drone strike. The terror squad were responsible for attacks last year, including Shimon HaTzadik neighbourhood of Jerusalem last April. The IDF reported that it targeted dozens of Hezbollah positions, military instillations and weapons production infrastructure in Lebanon. Meantime in the Red Sea, the UK and US with support of the Netherlands, Canada, Bahrain and Australia, carried out “targeted strikes” on Houthi military targets in Yemen. The move followed the Houthi’s targeting international shipping lanes according to Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron. “It is necessary, legal, proportionate and right”, he added, strikes following diplomatic attempts to deescalate the situation, including at the UN Security Council. Cameron confirmed 26 “unacceptable” attacks against ships since mid-November.

Ra’anana terrorists arrested BY ADAM MOSES

Shin Bet is questioning Mahmoud Zidat, 44, and Ahmad Zidat, 24, from Hebron, following a car-ramming stabbing terror attack in Ra’anana on Monday. Edna Bluestein, 79, died from her injuries. Eighteen people, including children and teenagers, were wounded and treated at Meir, Beilinson, Ichilov and Schneider hospitals. The assailants were captured following two incidents. According to Shin Bet, the Zidat cousins have entered Israel illegally on a number of occasions. The Khalil a-Rahman group, affiliated to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, accepted responsibility for the attack. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said: “The IDF and defence establishment are constantly working to thwart terrorism. Unfortunately, during this war there are difficult events, the attack in Ra’anana is a difficult and painful event. “In the war launched against us (by Hamas), we must win, without compromise. There is no other way but to defeat the enemy. We will hunt down and reach everyone who harmed our children, women and kidnapped our elders. We will destroy Hamas and strike anyone who participated in the brutal attack conducted on October 7.” Gallant said that Israel’s enemies and friends were following the Gaza war. He commented: “The future of the State of Israel here in our land depends on

the results of this war. The enemy whom we must face only responds to force. Only military pressure will enable us to achieve the goals of the war - the elimination of Hamas’ capabilities and returning hostages to their homes. If the war ends now, the fate of the hostages will be sealed for many years, in Hamas captivity. Without military pressure no one will talk to us, we will not be able to achieve any agreements. Only from a position of strength can we ensure the release of hostages.” Gallant presented a war plan in the

Gaza we will reach this achievement soon. The moment will come when we will move to the next phase. “In the north all battalion frameworks have been dismantled. We are now working to eliminate pockets of resistance. We will achieve this via raids, airstrikes, special operations and additional activities. In the centre, we are destroying Hamas’ military industry. The achievements (of our troops) are very impressive. In the southern area we are employing different operational tactics, forces are focused on the ‘head of the snake’, Hamas’ leader-

ground. Every day that passes, the terrorist city built by Sinwar collapses into the tunnels.” Gallant confirmed there would be no military threat from Gaza at the end of the war. “Hamas will not be able to control and function as a military force and the IDF will have full freedom to do whatever is required to defend the citizens of Israel,” he said. “Palestinians live in Gaza, Palestinians will govern Gaza. The future governing authority must arise from within the Gaza strip and be based on actors that are non-hostile to the State of Israel. These will serve as a civilian alternative (to Hamas), which will care for the well-being of Gaza residents instead of focusing on causing harm to the people of Israel.” He added: “The end of the military campaign must be anchored in policy that leads military action. Political indecision may harm the progress of the military operation.” Gallant called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz for a time of “unity partnership”. “Now is the time for compromises to achieve the goals of the war,” he said. “The unity government is a condition for victory in this war. The only beneficiary of the alternative is Hamas. It is our duty to mirror the unity among our troops on the battlefield, in a united society and leadership. The year 2024 will be a year of war but it will also be a year of victory.”

Thousands attend ‘hostages’ rally BY DAVID SAFFER

British Jews turned out in force for Stand With Israel’s ‘Bring Them Home Now’ rally at Trafalgar Square on Sunday. Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely led the call for the “immediate release” of over 130 hostages held in captivity by Hamas in Gaza for 100 days. Hotovely thanked London for 100 days of “consistent support” for Israel’s “most justified war”, adding that the hostages were enduring a “nightmare with every passing second”. President of Israel Isaac Herzog thanked King Charles, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, UK government and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer in a video message. He told the crowd of all ages: “In the face of those who wish to scare us into silence, you’ve stood up and spoken out with clarity, pride and passion but it isn’t only within the Jewish community, across every branch of British leadership, the truth reigns clear.” Former Suella Braverman Home Secretary attended the rally in solidarity with Israel. She told PA News Agency: “It has been 100 days since innocent people have been taken hostage by the Hamas terrorists and we need to bring them home now.” Jewish organisations welcomed the solidarity displayed. The rally heard from speakers including

relatives of hostages, UK special envoy for post-Holocaust issues, Lord Pickles, Labour MP Christian Wakeford and Israeli singer Miri Mesika. Lord Pickles, a staunch supporter of Israel, Conservative Friends of Israel chair in the House of Lords, said he was a “committed and unapologetic Zionist” and proud to stand with Israel. Noting a pro-Palestinian march on Saturday, Lord Pickles said the majority were not antisemitic but would “stand next to people who hate Jews” and looked towards the “destruction of Israel”. He added that Israel was “fighting for all of us”. Lord Pickles told LBC radio this week that a ceasefire would follow if Hamas surrender, release all the hostages and give up its weapons. Wakeford recalled a recent trip to Israel where he met survivors and families of hostages. “The experiences they’ve had on day one was too much,” he said. “100 days in, all we can say is this is far too many, Bring Them Home.” Following 100 seconds of silence, Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis recited a prayer for the return of the hostages. Israel government spokesman Eylon Levy concluded proceedings. He said: “We didn’t start this war. We fight because we must”. Levy called for the world’s respect, because other nations would also have responded as the IDF have after a similar “barbaric assault”.

Thousands gather in the capital

The Board of Deputies was inspired to see Jews and non-Jews alike “united in solidarity” with Israel. “We stand with Israel and we all pray for a peaceful future,” said a spokesman. Gary Mond, National Jewish Assembly chairman said the rally was different from others to date for several reasons. “It was the only one so far that has focused on explicit support for Israel in the war in Gaza, as well as calling for the hostages to be freed and fighting Jew-hatred,” he explained. “Most of the speakers were grass roots activists rather than communal figures, and the sheer fervour

of their orations was profound. Also, the interdenominational support from the Christian community, was especially apparent and really helped the Jewish community feel that it is not alone. “ Mond added: “I hope we see many more events like this where support for Israel to win the war is emphasised, and not just in London but elsewhere in the UK.” Metropolitan Police confirmed that a man who shouted “antisemitic abuse from a passing car” was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

Israeli leaders blast Turkish football club BY DAVID SAFFER

Israeli footballer Sagiv Yechezkel is home following his arrest for dedicating a goal for Antalyaspor in the Turkish Super League to the hostages held in captivity in Gaza. Yechezkel displayed the words “100 days since 7/10” on a bandage on his hand in celebration after his effort against Trabzonspor last Sunday. Israeli leaders condemned the scandalous incident as “incitement to hatred”. Police officers charged Yechezkel at his Antalya home on Sunday. Yechezkel was questioned and released on Monday pending a trial. He defended his actions as a “humanitarian gesture” of support. Israel’s Foreign Ministry quickly announced Yechezkel would return to Israel. Following his arrival at Ben Gurion Airport, he said: “I decided to make a humanitarian gesture to the Israeli hostages in Gaza. It was important for me to point out that they have been in captivity for 100 days. I had no intention of making a provocation or expressing a position in this regard; I know the sensitivity in Turkey.” “There is no place like Israel in all the world,” Yechezkel, with an Israeli flag around his shoulders, added. Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar told reporters: “We are happy to announce the return home of Yehezkel together with his family.” Zohar thanked the Israel Football Association, Ministry of Foreign Affairs,

Shin Bet, and Mossad for its actions in organising Yechezkel’s release. Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz blasted Turkish authorities. He said: “Turkey has become a dark dictatorship, working against humanitarian values and the values of sports. Whoever arrests a soccer player for an act of identification with 136 hostages who have been held for over 100 days by a murderous terrorist organisation represents a culture of murder and hatred. I call on the international community and international sports organisations to act against Turkey and its political use of violence and threats against athletes.” Katz added that the experience Yehezkel faced could strike other athletes. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant observed: “When there was an earthquake less than a year ago, Israel was the first country to proffer aid that saved the lives of many Turkish citizens. The scandalous arrest is an expression of hypocrisy and ingratitude. In its actions, Turkey serves

as the executive arm of Hamas.” Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett posted: “This is Turkey 2024. Shame on you, Turkish government.” Antalyaspor posted Yechzkel’s gesture on social media before deleting it after a number of complaints then suspended him from the team until ‘further notice’. Club officials announced it was considering terminating Yechezkel’s contract as the gesture was against Turkey’s national values. KAN News reported that Yehezkel, who joined the club during the summer, spent a night in jail before his court appearance. Legal proceedings continue. Yehezkel reportedly told the judge in a statement through an interpreter: “I did not take any step to provoke or inflame anyone. At the end of the day, there are Israelis being held hostage in Gaza. I believe that the 100-day period should end now. I want the war to end. That’s why I made the gesture. I am not involved with politics.” The statement added: “I have never done anything

related to politics since I arrived here. I wanted to draw attention to end the war.”. Turkish Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunc announced a judicial investigation against Yechezkel due to “public incitement to hatred” and hostility due to an “ugly gesture that supports the massacre carried out by Israel in Gaza.” Tunc accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. “We will always continue to stand by the oppressed Palestinians,” he said. National Security Minister Itamar BenGvir posted on X account that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was “a Nazi in every way” on Monday morning. Ben-Gvir called on Israelis to boycott Turkey. “I urge Israelis not to fly to Turkey, not to buy any Turkish products, and not to support them,” he fumed. “It is forbidden for the State of Israel and the citizens of Israel to show leniency towards Turkey. We cannot be trampled on.” Antalyaspor has launched a disciplinary investigation against another Israeli footballer Eden Kartsev, who posted a message calling for the return of hostages. The club said Kartsev had “violated the club’s disciplinary instructions” by posting on a personal social media account. The post violated the “sensitivity in our country”, the team stated. Israeli Ramzi Safouri, who is an attacking midfielder, also plays for Antalyaspor, basketball star Yam Madar plays for Fenerbahce. Both may return to Israel according to speculation.

Home Secretary “Hizb ut-Tahrir to be proscribed” BY ADAM MOSES

Home Secretary, James Cleverly, is set to ban Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir under the Terrorism Act 2000. Cleverly said the group was antisemitic and actively promoted and encouraged terrorism. The banning order by Parliament on Monday comes into force Friday unless voted down. Campaign Against Antisemitism led a campaign after the group appeared to praise Hamas after the brutal terror attack in Israel. A video of a rally in October shows a man chanting “jihad”. Scotland Yard at the time took no action. Cleverly said: “Hizb ut-Tahrir is an antisemitic organisation that actively promotes and encourages terrorism, including praising and celebrating the appalling 7 October attacks. Proscribing this terrorist group will ensure that anyone who belongs to and invites supports for them will face consequences. It will curb Hizb ut-Tahrir’s ability to operate as it currently does.” CAA welcomed the move after initially writing to the Metropolitan Police Service to prevent the group from holding its

demonstrations on the streets of London. “The Met took no action and the rallies went ahead, in which there were calls for the armies of Muhammed to wage Jihad,” a spokesman said. “Still, the Met refused to take action, making excuses to defend this rhetoric instead. We therefore wrote to the Home Secretary calling for the controversial Islamist group to be proscribed. Our polling of the Jewish community showed overwhelming support for this policy change.” CAA commended Cleverly’s “significant announcement”. “It is absolutely the right step, and shows that the Government is listening,” CAA noted. “The Met should take note.” Jewish organisations backed the news. The Board of Deputies observed: “Apart from its long-term history of antisemitism, its recent celebration of the October 7th attacks and description of Hamas as ‘heroes’ makes its ideology clear. The Jewish community in this country will be safer as a result of such proscription. We urge all parties to support this when it is debated in Parliament.” National Jewish Assembly applauded the decision as a “significant milestone” to combat Islamic extremism in the UK. Tel Aviv 100-day rally is ‘symbol of solidarity and humanity’ BY DAVID SAFFER

Over 100,000 people participated in a 24-hour rally at ‘Hostages Square’ in Tel Aviv last weekend. The event marked 100 days since the October 7 terror attack by Hamas. Relatives of over 130 hostages still held in captivity in Gaza attended. President Isaac Herzog sent a message to the ‘family of nations’ around the world to do its part and said the rally was a “symbol of solidarity and humanity”. “This isn’t just about our battle, it is a battle for the entire world,” he said. “Stand with life and liberty against barbarism and hate. Stand with freedom and democracy, stand with our hostages, and help bring them back home. There is no ‘later’. The time to act is now.” British Ambassador Simon Walters delivered a message of support from Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron. Aside from messages of support from other political leaders war cabinet ministers Benny Gantz and Gadi Eizenkot spoke to families. Yamit Ashkenazi, whose sister Doron was taken hostage criticised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. She said: “If you have not woken up after 100 days when our loved ones are there without food or water, exposed to abuse and torture, their lives at risk every moment. What are you waiting for?” Herzog said the State of Israel would not give up on the hostages. “We do not forget you,” he said. “We will continue to work here in Israel and all over

the world, 24/7 to bring you home. The whole nation of Israel is with you!” He added: “We cannot allow the issue of the hostages to fall from the public and global agenda, until the very last one of the hostages is freed. I commit to continue acting to ensure this, in every way and with every tool at my disposal. For their sake, and for our sake.” Addressing families of hostages, he said loved ones had suffered 100 long days terrible days of loneliness threatened by Hamas terrorists in diabolical cruelty, worry, fear and uncertainty. Attempting to offer support to the families, Herzog said the heart of the nation “beats together with you”. He added: “Each of us feels that the whole world is missing, that this horror is ever-present in our lives, in its most tangible and terrible sense. The responsibility for any harm to our hostages lies with the murderers of Hamas, those who kidnapped, those who tortured, those who slaughtered. “We hear the voices of our sisters and brothers calling out to us from under the ground. A hundred days in which we call out to the Gates of Heaven with the cry ‘Let my people go!’” As President of Israel, he told families they were not alone. “Your heroism and strength of stature give us all strength in the unwavering struggle to return our daughters and sons from the hands of a cruel and inhumane enemy,” he noted. “A whole nation is united together with you, tethered resolutely to

the duty of returning all hostages home, and restoring security for all Israeli citizens. The return of the hostages is beyond any debate, beyond any dispute. This is our deep moral order, the call to duty of a people and a state.” Herzog praised the IDF and security forces for risking their lives to defeat Hamas and bring hostages home. Netanyahu spoke at the Kirya in Tel Aviv after Shabbat. He said: “Today, we mark 100 days of the war, 100 days since the terrible day on which our citizens were massacred and taken hostage. We are continuing the war until the end, until total victory, until we achieve all of our goals - eliminating Hamas, returning all of our hostages and ensuring that Gaza will never again constitute a threat to Israel. “We will restore security to both the south and the north. Nobody will stop us, not The Hague, not the axis of evil and not anybody else. The hypocritical onslaught at The Hague against the State of the Jews that arose from the ashes of the Holocaust, at the behest of those who came to perpetrate another Holocaust against the Jews, is a moral low point in the history of nations. “The State of Israel, the IDF and security services are fighting a moral just war without parallel, against the Hamas monsters, the new Nazis. This international campaign of denigration will not weaken either our hand or our determination to fight until the end. The status of the Jewish people has fundamentally changed because today we have a state. We have defence forces and

heroic soldiers to protect our people. What happened on October 7 will not happen again. This is our mission. This is our obligation. We will not compromise. We are continuing until victory.” Netanyahu added: “In recent weeks, we have proven to Hamas and Hezbollah that every terrorist is a dead man, wherever they are. We are continuing to eliminate many terrorists in forceful military activity in which most Hamas battalions have been eliminated and clearing actions to eliminate additional terrorists left in the field, above and below ground. These actions take time. This is a war against the axis of evil led by Iran and its three proxies - Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis. “Citizens of Israel, we are at a national moment of truth. We are fighting not only to restore our security now, we are fighting to ensure our security for generations (but) this war is exacting a heavy price.” Addressing hostages, he said: “I will not give up on anyone. We are obligated to returning them all home.” Defence Minister Yoav Gallant noted: “We will not let the world forget. We will not leave them behind. And we will not stop until Hamas is defeated. While we face a brutal enemy, we continue maintaining moral and professional standards, taking measures to distinguish between the civilian population and terrorists. It’s been 100 days, yet we will not stop until we win.” IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi said in a press statement in southern Israel on Saturday night that military pressure would return more hostages from Gaza.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lior Haiat described the hearing as “one of the greatest shows of hypocrisy in history” compounded by a “series of false and baseless claims”. The panel included judges from France, Germany, Australia, India, Slovakia, Jamaica, Japan, Brazil, Russia, China, Morocco, Somalia, Lebanon and Uganda. South Africa and Israel are represented on the panel. Israel sent former Supreme Court chief justice Aharon Barak and lead advocate Prof. Malcolm Shaw. Shaw highlighted Israel’s actions within the parameters of Hamas’s October 7 terror attack.

South Africa ICJ case “preposterous” BY ADAM MOSES

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has labelled South Africa’s International Court of Justice case alleging Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza as a “preposterous charge” that reflects a “deep historical ignorance” of the facts. “Israel is fighting murderous terrorists who carried out crimes against humanity,” he raged. “The hypocrisy of South Africa screams to the heavens. Where was South Africa when millions of people were killed or torn from their homes in Syria and Yemen, by whom? By partners of Hamas.” Netanyahu said the IDF was the most “moral army” in the world.” “We will continue to fight the terrorists, repel the lies and maintain our just right to defend ourselves and ensure our future - until total victory,” Netanyahu added. In the UK, Israel has support from the government. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the South African allegations was “completely unjustified and wrong” and did not aid

Jewish Unity & Siddurim Dear Editor As we all grapple with immense fear, the ‘pressure’ we are under as a Nation, brought upon us by our enemies, is resulting in that which has repetitively transpired at similar times throughout our history; the exposing of deep levels of ‘Jewish pride’ and ‘Jewish unity’. In many ways we are all witnessing vast and magnificent acts of kindness, generosity, love and concern for one another. I need not elaborate… Drawing upon these shared feelings of ‘unity and oneness’ so palpable in every community, I wish to jump on the bandwagon and offer a suggestion; perhaps even a plea. Our people are a beautiful symbiosis of varying customs, styles, cultures... We all recognise and respect the innumerable groups and Torah paths that make up our People. One such difference, relates to Prayer – that of an assigned ‘Nusach’. We each have our own community and Shul we frequent, but many a time we find ourselves as guests in other Shuls. It can be very restrictive and somewhat

challenging wanting to Daven, but being unable to find a Siddur with ‘ones own particular Nusach’. The same can be experienced as a guest in someone else’s home. In the spirit of the ‘brotherly love and unity’ as mentioned above, I respectfully turn to the Rabbonim and Gabboim of Shuls, to consider housing a few Siddurim (both in the mens and womens section) of the varying Nuschos; Ashkenaz, Sefard, Sefardi, Ari’zal… etc. I also call upon everyone individually, to consider adding a Siddur for each Nusach to the bookshelves in one’s home; this, a more nuanced form of hospitality. Perhaps this gesture of ‘inclusiveness’ may be a more subtle form of ‘Jewish Unity’, but it is unity nonetheless, and the love it conveys will very much be felt by the beneficiary. I appreciate all those who take my humble suggestion to heart. May our people no longer suffer, and may we ‘unite’ within the walls of the third Beis HaMikdosh, immediately… Siddur in hand! Sting and Golda OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN

In 1985, at the height of the cold war between the USA and the Soviet Union, Sting wrote and produced a song called ‘Russians’. It is a commentary and plea that criticises the then-dominant foreign policy and doctrine of mutual assured destruction by the United States and the then existing Soviet Union. I remember the song well. The music is based on a classical piece by Prekofiev – Lieutenant Kijé – and the lyrics include the words – ‘How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer’s deadly toy?, There is no monopoly on common sense, On either side of the political fence, We share the same biology, regardless of ideology, Believe me when I say to you, I hope the Russians love their children too’. It was the final line that has always stayed with me – I hope the Russians love their children too. The sentiment is a fine one, and not original. Golda Meir

famously said ‘Peace will come when the Arabs will love their children more than they hate us’. Sadly, what the war is showing us is that we are a long way from peace, given the way Hamas are deliberately exposing their civilian population to danger by using them as human shields. Amongst the calls for a ceasefire are those who call also for the implementation of the two state solution - TSS. I have said for some years that the TSS is defunct. And so it is. There is no way that any sensible Israeli would be keen on a solution that promotes Hamas or the Palestinian Authority to formal statehood. Yet this is what is being sought. In order to go forward here, we need to go back and understand the enormity of what is needed. The Christian Church for hundreds of years, blamed the Jews for the death of Jesus Christ and were well ahead in the game before Islam began. It was only in the second half of the twentieth century that the Vatican began to soft pedal its attitude towards the Jews. Even if the blame game didn’t start until the third or fourth

Kick it out Dear Editor In a week where serial anti-Israel broadcaster and former footballer Gary Lineker called for Israel to be banned from international football, following the same call from the Palestinian Football Association, the blatantly antisemitic removal of David Teeger as the captain of the South African U19 cricket team, the ousting of Israel from the International Ice Hockey Federation and the case brought by South Africa against Israel in the International Court of Justice, we now have the detention of Israeli footballer Sagiv Yechezkel in the Southern Turkish city of Antalya and his subsequent sacking by his club, Antalyaspor. Yechezkel was accused of incitement following a celebration of an equaliser in a Turkish Super League match where he held up his bandaged hand that read ‘100 days 7/10’. He is now safely back in Israel after the Israeli government intervened. Please remember that the UK Football Association failed to light up the arch at Wembley Stadium at the recent England v Australia match following the October 7 massacre of innocent Israelis, Jews and others by Hamas. It is so sad, and unacceptable, that the State of Israel, Israeli citizens and followers of Israel’s national teams are continually vilified, and especially so after the horrendous massacre carried out by Hamas three months ago. The sports arena is no place for such appalling racist behaviour. Let us hope that appropriate sports bodies, politicians, internet providers, and the BBC in relation to Lineker, do everything in their powers to see an end to this antisemitic discrimination, prejudice and bigotry. Jonathan Metliss Chairman, Action Against Discrimination

century, that is still well over 1,500 years of Jew-hate, predominantly from the Catholic church in the west, and Orthodox church in the east of Europe. Hating Jews in Gaza and Judea & Samaria is still at full throttle, and until that stops, as per Golda’s observation, there is no chance of a lasting peace. It that which needs to be tackled head-on, since the current regimes see a TSS only as a stepping stone to a one state solution, where there are no Jews. For there to be a lasting peace there needs to be a desire for such, and amongst the above populations, there is none. How do you change the minds of those who have been told from birth that the Jews are evil, and Israel should be eliminated? Since 1948 the indoctrination of the Arab population against Jews and Israel has been far-reaching so that children dance in the streets in Gaza and Judea & Samaria when Jews are killed or injured in attacks. How do you stop that or explain to the EU and other entities which send money to Palestinian groups that the

Anglo-Jewry: Where are you? Dear Editor The Daily Telegraph reported 25,000 attendees at Sunday’s rally. There are about 250,000 Jews in Great Britain. Where were you? It does not matter that we are called again to rally. If you are healthy, able, and not in charge of small children- you should be there. Our Christian and Iranian allies show up – we need to show up. So what if it is cold? The hostages in the tunnels are feeling more than the cold. So what if it is inconvenient? Our brave soldiers are finding it more than inconvenient living in tents outside Gaza, leaving their jobs, leaving their families. We can go home after the rally; there are hundreds of thousands of displaced people from the North and South of Israel who cannot go home. So what if there are ‘too many speakers’? It is not the number of speakers which is important, it is the number of individuals standing, supporting. The world needs to see that Israel is not alone. Israel needs to see that she is not alone. And this can be seen by witnessing a mass of Jews and supporters filling Trafalgar Square. There should be at least 50,000 crammed in, spilling over the edges, squeezing for space. I pray that we will not have to rally again. If we do, it’s very simple. BE THERE. It’s the very least we can do. Janine Ellerman

money has not make things any better for the Palestinians, and crucially, how do you persuade those on the left that Hamas are not freedom fighters, are not democratic and in fact stand for everything that the left abhors? The answer is simple. You cannot change minds overnight. Any lasting peace, to have a chance, has to address fundamental issues, such as the pay-toslay policy implemented by the Palestinian Authority and the open call in the Hamas governing document to kill Jews. These need to go before there can be any progress, and until they do, anyone still calling for a TSS is either plain stupid, someone who hates Jews or both. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.

wider community saw 89 charity award winners from 37 charities. The event was introduced by community compere, Nigel Rothband, volunteers that won an award told their own story and each winner was individually recognised. JVN Chair, Daniel Levy, said “At a time of unparalleled difficulty in Israel and within our community, this was a rare moment to reflect on the positive impact of volunteering and spotlight the real heroes of our community, giving charities the opportunity to shine.” JVN premiered a new video, by BBC director David Coleman, about volunteers JVN have helped place over the past year. The video focused on the work JVN does and how they connect charities to volunteers. JVN’s Chief Executive Nicky Goldman commented: “It was inspiring and humbling to hear the stories of volunteering of all the charity award winners, as well as outstanding category winners. In the words of Rabbi Sacks, ‘our community could not exist for a day without its volunteers’. Lord Lieutenant, Robert Voss, Mayors of the London Borough of Barnet and Hertsmere and British Jewish community leaders attended.

Awards were Volunteer of the Year, Volunteer Team of the Year, Young Adult Volunteer of the Year and a Lifetime Achievement Award. The event introduced a special recognition award presented to CST volunteers. An independent judging panel, headed by Dame Mary Marsh, studied each nomination. ‘Brew Monday’ for Mitzvah Day Leaders across the Jewish community reached out on ‘Brew Monday’ to encourage people to check-in with their friends, colleagues and loved ones. The annual Samaritans initiative is brought to the faith world by Mitzvah Day. It seeks to give people the chance to connect with each other and reduce the stigma attached to mental health. Mitzvah Day CEO Stuart Diamond explained: “The third Monday in January is sometimes referred to as ’Blue Monday’ and is perceived as the ‘the most challenging day of the year’. “While we know this is a bubbe meiseh there is no doubt that we all have our good days and our bad days and that reaching out on Brew Monday, and indeed any day, can make a real difference. “At Mitzvah Day, we believe that small

acts of kindness can go the longest way. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Monday morning or Sunday evening, or if you’re Mitzvah Day CEO Stuart Diamond drinking tea, coffee or freshly squeezed apple juice. If you’re sharing a drink and engaging, you’re doing it right.” JLC, GIFT, Work Avenue, UJS, Maccabi GB, Leo Baeck College, Resource, Progressive Judaism and the Sufra NW Kitchen participated. Work Avenue CEO Debbie Lebrett said: “Searching for a new job or starting up a business can be extremely difficult and put pressure on your mental health, which is why days such as Brew Monday are so vital. They remind us of the importance of something as simple as a cuppa and a catch up.”

The overwhelming feedback received from both parents and teens attested to the relevance and impact of Rabbi Jacobson’s talk. Many expressed a desire for more such discussions, signalling a growing need for guidance in navigating the challenges of contemporary parenting. The post-event Q&A session saw an impressive engagement, with over a hundred questions pouring in from the audience. Rabbi Jacobson addressed inquiries, covering a range of topics, including technology use, religion struggles and the delicate art of saying “no” to children. In a heartfelt moment following the public talk, Rabbi Jacobson extended his gratitude to all JTeen volunteer counselors and therapists. He commended their dedication to supporting the youth in the community, emphasizing the importance of their work in the face of challenges and skeptics within the mental health discourse. The event reinforces JTeen’s commitment to changing the landscape of teen mental health. To further this mission, on the 21st and 22nd of January, JTeen is running a campaign to raise much needed funds. The campaign aims to expand the Support and Prevent programmes, intending to positively impact the mental health of Jewish teens across the UK.

On Saturday 13th January after Shabbat, Jnetics in conjunction with Kinloss our host and partner (Finchley United Synagogue) ran Jnetics 2nd Young Professionals supper quiz, which over 180 Young Professionals attended! Jnetics Marketing & Events Manager Nicole Levy welcomed guests to the event, and this was followed by a more formal introduction from Jnetics Young Professionals Committee Co-Chair Jasmine Mahgerefteh and young committee member Daniel Lewis Green. Jasmine & Daniel captivated the audience as they spoke about the committee’s involvement within the charity and emphasised the importance of the work Jnetics does within the community in order to save lives with regards to recessive testing and BRCA. In Daniel’s words “Prevention is better than a cure, all you need to do is do a ‘cheeky’ swab test to find out your carrier status and ensure babies are born free from Jewish genetic disorders.” The quiz consisted of eight rounds on various topics including sports, music, food, and drink, Jewish and Israel Knowledge to name a few and there was a bonus round on Jewish genetic disorders

to test guests’ knowledge. This was a great way to see what they had learnt about the charity during the evening. Jnetics also ran a prize raffle consisting of donated prizes including vouchers from Daniel Galvin, Sushi Haven, a hamper fully of goodies, and lots more. The room was buzzing and the atmosphere electric. Jnetics has received very positive feedback from guests who said they had a wonderful time and that the variety and amount of food was amazing! Emma Bergen, Jnetics Fundraising Manager, summed up the evening thanking our host Kinloss, Raw Focus Photography, our volunteers, The Jnetics Team, our compere Edward Bergen and to all of our guests for attending. LSJS Publishes Report on Welcoming Israeli families into UK Schools The London School of Jewish Studies has published a report looking at how UK Jewish communities welcomed Israeli families into its schools. Following the October 7 terror attack over 100 Israeli families found themselves looking for school places in the UK. The report noted that although it usually takes weeks to get a place at a Jewish school, local authorities helped reduce the process to a few days. Israeli children were given uniforms and necessary resources, schools found Hebrew speakers to work with the children to make them feel comfortable at a challenging time. Part of the report details opportunities and challenges faced by schools, how teachers had to respond to children

Passover Programmes: A Foodies Dream

Kosher for Passover food is superior. Have you ever heard someone say that? Probably not. If you disagree with this bold statement, you’ve probably never been to a Passover programme. Passover programmes are notorious for many factors, food being one of the most alluring components. From lavish breakfast and lunch buffets to 24/7 fully stocked tea rooms, daily afternoon BBQs, all-inclusive delicious meals, unlimited drinks, and poolside cocktails/mocktails. The options are quite literally, limitless. If you are a foodie or just consume food daily, Passover programmes are for you. You do not need to be concerned about the grocery shopping, meal planning, and cooking food for Passover. Passover programmes will do it for you. So, you can put on your most comfortable outfit, lounge by the breezy pool, drink your frosty and refreshing pina colada, and just enjoy the peace and quiet. Sounds like paradise because it is. Passover programme operators are fully aware that families attend programmes for different reasons. One family goes on vacation yearly, one family wants a break from cleaning, cooking, and hosting, and the other family comes for the luxurious and mouthwatering meals. There is no shame in that. Passover programmes hire several chefs each year for the sole purpose of cooking succulent meals that people will be buzzing about till next Passover. K Luxury, a Passover

programme in Khalkidhiki, Greece is hiring “15 Israeli Chefs from renowned Israeli Hotels (that) will delight you with their specialties.” Food is not only to be quickly eaten during the programme, but also an experience for the palate. From themed dinners each night, to after Passover Mimouna parties, candy shops, and in-house restaurants. Passover programmes are truly a foodie’s dream- there is no other opportunity where top-quality meals are served for ten days straight. If you think programmes will serve leftovers for ten days, think again. Passover programmes are not fond of leftovers, like you and me. They try their hardest to ensure leftovers will not be served to any of their guests. In fact, some programmes have different cuisines each night, from Mexican, Italian, Israeli, and so on. All while making sure that the

traditional comfort food is served on Yom Tov. A taste of home away from home. Royal Passover, another programme on Passover Listings, located in Los Cabos, Mexico guarantees “a brilliant and coordinated performance by leading chefs of the world who will create a tailored dazzling culinary Pesach experience. can’t forget about the glorious breakfast buffets with pancakes, waffles, cereals, yes- you’re reading this correctly- refreshing jams, sharp cheeses, fresh fruit, nutty coffee, the list goes on and on. Each mealtime is something to look forward to while on a Passover programme. For all the non-foodies out there, we all know that Passover is extremely restricted regarding food. However, it does not need to be that way. There is a possibility where you can enjoy Passover food and look forward to it like countless Passover programme travelers. BK, a Royal Passover guest, left a review stating, “Food was amazing, never had a bad meal, never got sick.” As well as Elana, a Hafikoman Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Pesach Programme guest, wrote how the “food was excellent and plentiful…Loved that the food had a Mexican flair to it and truly made me feel like I was getting a Mexican experience even during Pesach (think fried plantains, guacamole, fresh fruit…all the time). It was a very fish-heavy programme. Also had tons of meat – beef, veal, and lamb.” If you are worried regarding food on a Passover programme, if there was enough, was it buffet or sit down- make sure to visit Passover Listings, a website that showcases over 100 Passover programmes worldwide. This hand was originally used in an advanced teaching class. Everyone reached 4♠ and received the opening lead of the ♠King. All of the declarers saw that the contract would surely fail if trumps were 4-1. After ducking the king of spades and winning the continuation of the queen of trumps with the ace, one of the less experienced student declarers led a heart to the ace at trick three and continued with a low club, hoping that East had the king of clubs. This proved disastrous when West took the queen of clubs with the king and cashed the Jack of trumps, leaving declarer a trick short of his contract. One of the more experienced student declarers took a different route after playing a heart to the ace at trick three. Next, she played a low diamond to her Jack and ruffed

a heart in dummy. She continued with a diamond to the king to ruff a second heart in dummy. Continuing with her plan to ruff three hearts in dummy, she now played the ten of diamonds to her ace. It would not have profited West to ruff this trick, because declarer would have been able to ruff a club in hand for her tenth trick: all she would lose would be two trumps and a club. So, West discarded a club. Declarer now ruffed the queen of hearts in dummy for her eighth trick. Next, she played dummy’s queen of diamonds giving West the same Hobson’s choice as he had had on the ace of diamonds. After that player discarded a club, declarer cashed dummy’s ace of clubs for her tenth trick. She made 1 Club, 1 Heart, 4 Diamonds, 1 Spade and 3 Heart ruffs in the long hand, basically a Dummy reversal.

Filling the Void: The Spiritual Joy of Wasting Words BY RABBI SHMUEL REICHMAN

IHe had been waiting for hours, and it was finally his turn in line. He could barely wait. He had so many questions for this wise sage, so many thoughts on his mind. As he sat down, he could actually feel the sage’s presence; his gentle, thoughtful eyes peering deeply into his own. Suddenly nervous, he managed to smile and stammer out a greeting. The sage sat in perfect silence, and then, with deliberation and intent, said, “It is such a pleasure to meet you.” Such simple words, and yet, each one was powerfully spoken with such intent, such care. All of his questions disappeared, replaced by a single one — one that he had been struggling with for some time. “If I can ask one question, how did you become so developed and deep in your thought? How did you get to the point where you weighed every word you spoke?” The sage smiled and thought for a moment. “I used to be very different. I spoke freely and didn’t give value or weight to my words. Then, I was afflicted with a rare medical condition, completely losing my ability to speak. Every word I spoke felt like a dagger in my throat. As such, I spoke very little. I began to value every word I spoke, debating long and hard whether it was absolutely necessary. Most days, I barely spoke. “At first, I was miserable. I was stuck alone in my head, with no one to speak to. I hated myself, and I hated my life. But soon I realized that my pain was due to the fact that I had never built a deep, inner mind. The reason I used to speak so much was to get away from myself, to get away from dealing with who I was. I spoke so that I wouldn’t have to hear the emptiness inside my head. Once I could no longer speak, I was forced to confront my own inner emptiness. And I couldn’t stand it! At that very moment, I committed to change; I decided to fill my mind with thought, ideas, and purpose. I started feeding my mind, learning new ideas every single day. My throat began to heal, but my vision only strengthened. I began to share the ideas I was learning, but also began weighing my words more carefully. My voice returned, but I retained my newfound appreciation for speech. Losing the ability to speak taught me the value of words and the responsibility that comes with the gift of speech. Now, I am an old man. If there is one lesson I can share with you, this is it: harness the power of speech.”

OUR DEEPEST DESIRE As Shabbos enters, one can almost feel a wave of relaxation and reflection pass over the Jewish People. As human beings, we have the unique ability to step outside of ourselves and view our lives from an external, third-person perspective.

While our default experience of life is internal and personal, we occasionally feel compelled to look at ourselves from an outside view and ponder the meaning and direction of our lives. In such reflective moments, we ask ourselves: “Who am I? Where am I going? Why am I living the life I’m living?” Sometimes this reflection is inspired by an impactful speech or article; other times it results from confronting the concept of death; while for others, this reflection occurs we step outside the hustle and bustle of daily life. We have all undergone this experience at some point, and for most, this reflection reinforces the same general principles: Life is infinitely valuable, we each have tremendous potential, and we have the responsibility to use this potential in making the most of the life we have been given. However, while we all understand these values, there is another mysterious human drive that runs directly counter to them. We know the infinite value of time and the omni-significance of each of our lives, and yet, there is an immensely powerful human drive to do absolutely nothing. Observing society, or even honestly evaluating oneself, leads to the realization that most people’s ultimate desire and enjoyment rests in doing absolutely nothing: chatting endlessly, playing around, watching meaningless content, or just sitting around doing nothing at all. What is the root of this strange desire? Why are we — human beings who are uniquely capable of accomplishing the extraordinary — so drawn to doing absolutely nothing?

WASTING WORDS The Torah commands us: “Lo yachel d’varo — He shall not profane his words” (Bamidbar 30:3). Rashi interprets this to mean that one should not make his words “chullin,” or profane. In other words, this is a command against speaking devarim beteilim — meaningless, wasted words. This seems like a strange prohibition. Why are meaningless words such an egregious problem? Lying, defamation, and lashon hara are clearly harmful and negative; their prohibition is not surprising. Why, though, is wasting words so severe that it warrants specific mention? It appears to be neither harmful nor evil, simply unnecessary. Why, then, are wasted words so spiritually harmful? (And in a deeper sense, why do we experience a unique pleasure in wasting words? Why do we enjoy simply talking for the sake of talking?) In order to understand this, let us study the concept of speech.

THE POWER OF SPEECH Speech is the process of taking abstract, ethereal thought — that which is beyond the finite form of words — and giving it concrete form and expression. When one speaks, they take their inner consciousness and their inner self, and express it outwards into the physical world. This is

the very mechanism that Hashem used to create the world. He took that which is infinite and condensed it into a finite expression of that spiritual and ethereal essence. This is why the Torah describes Hashem’s creative process as a form of speech; Hashem “spoke” existence into being (Bereishis 1:3). Speaking truth means expressing transcendent, ethereal, and inaccessible ideas of spiritual wisdom through finite, comprehensible words. Ideas become words, and the infinite becomes concretized. In so doing, a profound marriage occurs between the spiritual root and the physical expression. Our words therefore hold immense creative power, thus explaining the notable emphasis the Torah places on using words appropriately. When used correctly, words are the mechanism through which we express our inner selves, i.e., our inner essence, out into the world. Words can spread ideas that ripple and reverberate throughout the world, creating genuine and powerful change. The proper use of speech allows one to express their innermost, higher, spiritual thoughts; when one wastes words, they take that very gift and use it for nothing. Instead of an expression of infinite spiritual significance, meaningless words are just that: meaningless. This same principle applies to wasting time. Time is the tool that allows us to concretize our infinite spiritual potential into that which is real — to actualize our loftiest goals and desires in this physical world. Wasting time takes the very gift of life, the opportunity to build eternity, and transforms it into nothing. Such a lifestyle is akin to riding a train that’s going nowhere or driving a car aimlessly in an endless circle: It’s pointless. Without a destination, without creating something meaningful with our time, we throw away our potential. Constructive breaks and time to reenergize are necessary and healthy, but a lifestyle of aimlessness is destructive.

they are misusing and profaning the spiritual tool of speech. When you teach someone a word of Torah, you plant a seed within their mind. That seed will ultimately grow and spread. If they teach it to someone else, the seed you planted is now being replanted in other minds as well. That single seed can end up creating hundreds or even thousands of trees. Wasting that single seed eliminates all that potential and all those future trees. The truth of the matter is that we all know this; we feel this deep within ourselves. Every time we waste our time or our words, we walk away feeling a little empty inside, almost as if a part of us was just lost. We know that every day contains infinite potential that we can harness and actualize to create a better version

“Time is the tool that allows us to concretize our infinite spiritual potential into that which is real — to actualize our loftiest goals and desires in this physical world.”

WASTING WORDS Chazal compare wasting words to wasting seed. Seed has the potential to create and is the physical expression of one’s DNA. Words have the ability to create as well and are an expression of one’s spiritual consciousness and inner thoughts. Wasting potential is tragic, and it trivializes the power and beauty of properly manifested potential. When one has the ability to speak words of Torah, wisdom, positivity, and inspiration, but instead chooses meaningless chatter,

of ourselves. We can learn a little more; become a little more sensitive, empathetic, and kind; work on our middos, and develop our mind and personality. When we waste our time, that moment is gone, and a part of us that could have been is lost forever. It is lost in the abyss of the past, never to be seen again. When we spend our time productively — growing, learning, expanding — we carry that time with us forever, invested into the framework of our very self. The day is gone, but everything you developed and added to your personality and mind sticks with you forever, becoming an everlasting part of you. This is a taste of Olam Haba, where you experience the joy and ecstasy of everything you built during your lifetime.

THE DESIRE FOR NEVUAH AND AVODAH ZARAH In order to understand why we have such a strong desire to waste time and words, we must study the historical origin of this desire. Until a few thousand years ago, human beings had a nearly unquenchable desire for transcendence.

18 JANUARY 2024

JUDAISM 21

This manifested in two unique spiritual drives: nevuah, and avodah zarah. Both of these drives embodied our desire to transcend the limits of the finite self to reach into that which is higher, that which is beyond us. The drive for nevuah is the drive to connect back to our ultimate source, Hashem Himself. This is a deeply spiritual, existential desire for transcendence, connection, meaning, and accomplishment. As with all drives, there is a negative expression for this desire to transcend — the desire for idolatry. Idolatry takes the root desire for transcendence and corrupts it, using the drive to rise above oneself in a way that cuts one off from Hashem. The Rambam (Mishneh Torah: Avodah Zarah, 1), Ramchal (Derech Hashem), and others explain that the sin of avodah zarah lies in worshiping the intermediaries that serve Hashem’s functions in this world, rather than sourcing the world, and everything in it, back to Hashem Himself. The statues that idolaters “worship” are merely tangible representations of the higher forces they serve. Therefore, there is potential for good in the root of avodah zarah — it is the process of looking upwards to the source of this world, to that which is beyond us. The mistake lies in stopping at the intermediaries, addressing those who are merely servants of Hashem. This is both misguided and evil. While the ancient sin of avodah zarah may be easy to understand, its appeal is now almost impossible to relate to. In the modern age, avodah zarah seems foolish,

senseless, and pointless. We are no longer enticed by it, and we cannot even grasp how one could be. However, this inability to grasp the appeal of avodah zarah is not incidental. The world has changed, the very inner workings of the human consciousness have shifted, and we no longer crave idolatry. However, we no longer crave nevuah and transcendence either, at least not to the same degree. Why is this? What changed? In our next article, we will delve deeper into this fascinating topic and try to answer this fascinating question. . Weekly Dvar Torah F R O M E R E TZ Y I S R A E L

Israel on the World Stage BY RABBANIT SHANI TARAGIN

Parashat Bo begins with Hashem’s message to Moshe concerning Pharaoh and the Egyptians, whereas the rest of the parasha focuses on instructions particular for Am Yisrael. Here we find a turning point in history. Until now the history of Am Yisrael has been presented together with that of the world at large. At the eve of their redemption, it is imperative that they see themselves as separate and distinct from the nation around them. The haftarah selected for this week (Yirmiyahu 46:13–28) is one of the first prophecies delivered by the prophet to other nations, and like the parasha, contains both universal and particular themes. The first part of Yirmiyahu’s prophecy (v. 13–26) is universally addressed to Egypt and the entire world, while the concluding two pesukim contain a special message concerning the destiny of Am Yisrael: “...For I am with

you, for I shall make an end of all the nations... but I will not make an end of you.” This echoes the contrast Hashem made during the plagues of darkness and death of the firstborn – “in order that you shall know that G-d separates between Egypt and Israel” (Shemot 11:7). As opposed to the parasha which focuses on the distinction of Am Yisrael, the haftarah teaches that Hashem, as the G-d of the entire world, continues to deliver messages to all the nations throughout history. This time, on the eve of destruction and exile, Yirmiyahu the prophet must come and prepare the nation for their new reality of dispersion amidst the nations. The haftarah serves as contrasting parshanut for the parasha; yetziat Mitzrayim is being reversed as Am Yisrael return to a state of exile. Am Yisrael must be reminded that they have a role to play among the nations, i.e. the spreading of G-d’s name. The haftarah therefore, focuses on the universal

component as found in the beginning of Parashat Bo. Although the haftarah contains similar themes, the plagues described by Yirmiyahu that will befall Egypt come from the nation of the north and not directly from Hashem as described in the parasha. Nonetheless, the prophet warns that the warriors of Egypt will not be able to withstand their invaders “because G-d thrust him down” (15). Here we once again find parshanut on the parasha: When Pharaoh declared “I do not know G-d’s name,” Hashem sent direct and overt plagues so that the nations would universally recognize G-d’s “outstretched arm” and His guidance of the world. Yirmiyahu’s prophecy indicates that by his time, G-d’s name is already known and His hand may be detected even through natural phenomena and human actions. The concluding pesukim of the haftarah emphasize that even amidst the

prophecies concerning the nations and the universalistic trend which they represent, the uniqueness of Am Yisrael will be maintained. Anticipating the fears of the nation on the eve of exile, the prophet promises: “And you, My servant Ya’akov, do not be afraid, and do not fear, O Israel, for I will save you from afar and your seed from the land of their captivity. And Ya’akov shall return and shall be quiet and at ease, with none to make him afraid. And you, My servant Ya’akov, do not fear, says the L-rd, for I am with you, for I shall make an end of all the nations where I have driven you, but I will not make an end of you…” (v. 27–28) Rabbanit Shani Taragin is Educational Director of World Mizrachi and the Director of the Mizrachi-TVA Lapidot Educators’ Program. She is a member of Mizrachi’s Speakers Bureau (www.mizrachi.org/speakers).

Bo Sidra Summary 6th Aliya (Shishi) – 12:29-51

PHOTO: OSAMA ELSAYED ON UNSPLASH

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – SHEMOT 10:1-10:11

After the first seven plagues, Moshe (Moses) and Aharon (Aaron) again warn Pharaoh to let the nation go, lest Egypt suffer an eighth plague. Pharaoh’s advisors encourage him to agree. However, he only agrees to let the men leave temporarily, but not the women or children.

2nd Aliya (Levi) –10:12-23

The 8th plague: Moshe stretches his staff “over Egypt”. An easterly wind brings a swarm of locusts over the whole of Egypt, eating any grass and foliage still left over from the plague of hail. Pharaoh admits his sin of not letting the people go and asks Moshe and Aharon to pray for an end to the plague. G-d sends a westerly wind (see Rashi’s commentary) which carries away the locusts. G-d hardens

Pharaoh’s heart and he refuses to let the people go. The 9th plague: Moshe raises his hand towards the heavens. For three days, a thick darkness descends over all of Egypt, except for where the Israelites live.

3rd Aliya (Shlishi) – 10:24-11:3

Moshe once again asks Pharaoh to allow the entire nation to leave so that they can bring offerings in the desert. He adds that they should be allowed to take livestock with them. G-d hardens Pharaoh’s heart and he refuses. G-d requests that Moshe ask the Israelites to ask for gold and silver vessels from the Egyptians. Point to Consider: Why did G-d insist on the Israelites taking these vessels? (see Rashi to 11:2)

4th Aliya (Revi’i) – 11:4-12:20

of the first born (Rashi), which will only affect the Egyptians. G-d tells Moshe and Aharon the laws of Rosh Chodesh and that Nissan is to be the first month of the ‘year of months’. They are also told to instruct the nation about the Pesach offering: the lamb must be designated on 10 Nissan and slaughtered on the afternoon of 14 Nissan. Its blood is to be placed on the door frame and the meat eaten, together with matza and maror, on the night of 15 Nissan. This will be commemorated every year with the seven day Pesach festival.

5th Aliya (Chamishi) – 12:21-28

Moshe relates the laws of the Pesach offering to the elders. The blood on the door frame will ‘indicate’ to G-d to ‘pass over’ the Israelite houses and only smite the Egyptians.

Moshe warns Pharaoh about the plague

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

The 10th plague: The plague strikes Egypt at midnight, leaving no house without a death. Pharaoh searches frantically for Moshe and Aharon (Rashi) and tells them to leave. The Egyptian people also urge the Israelites to leave. They take their dough with them before it has time to rise. The Egyptians agree to let them take gold and silver items. The nation travels from Ra’amses to Succot. They bake the unleavened dough, making matzot. Additional laws of the Pesach offering are given.

7th Aliya (Shevi’i) – 13:1-16

G-d relates to Moshe the mitzvah of redeeming firstborn male children (pidyon ha’ben). Firstborn animals also have a special sanctity. The mitzvah of tefilin is stated twice.

Haftarah

Yirmiyahu (Jeremiah) is told by G-d that Egypt will be destroyed by the Babylonian invader Nebuchadnezzar. The nation of Israel, referred to as “His servant Yaakov”, should not be afraid. Even if they are punished for wrongdoings, they will eventually be redeemed from their lands of captivity.

ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com IS IT TIME FOR A REBOOT? Dear Rabbi I look around and can see the world is just getting worse and worse. There are wars in umpteen countries, death, destruction, volcanic eruptions, floods, stabbings and shootings. Then, of course, you have the ridiculousness of those who think they are the opposite sex, an animal or inanimate object and people who claim they suffer with anxiety, depression, ADHD, ADD and various other initials. Why doesn’t G-d just destroy the world once and for all - it’s going to pot anyway - and, if He wants to start again, He should do so. He’s done it before. Anon Dear Anon I’m not sure why you chose to write to me anonymously. It is, arguably, a good question. Only, of course, I don’t see the world the way you do. I see a world in which there may be “some” chaos and madness. But also a world in which there is “much” goodness and kindness. It’s true that G-d has, in the past, brought destruction to the world, or parts thereof. But that was when there was no redeeming feature to civilisation. The only good

people at the time of the flood were Noah and his family. Hence, they were spared while the rest of the world perished. Even as G-d intended to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, two utterly depraved cities, Abraham negotiated, seeking some redeeming feature: “If there are ten righteous people in the city will you still destroy it?” And G-d said that He would not. That teaches that when there are redeeming features then there is no destruction. (Obviously, there was no righteousness to be found, hence they were destroyed). “One thing in distress is worth a thousand at ease.” When Moshe put on Tefilin he was surrounded by an entire Jewish community while basking in the tranquillity of desert life. When Miriam lit Shabbat candles, she did so, joined by tens of thousands of Jewish women and girls all doing the same. We are living today post pogroms, post crusades, post Holocaust – and still we put on Tefilin or light Shabbat candles. We are not living in tranquillity, rather surrounded by much hate and rhetoric. Yet still we persevere. That makes our actions far greater than those of our forebears – yes, greater than even Moses himself. In other words, there are a lot

18 JANUARY 2024

more than ten “righteous” people in our world today. Don’t judge the collective whole on the basis of the noisy few. If I may add however, I do take exception to your flippant remark about people “claiming” to suffer with various forms of mental illness. I think that reflects a certain lack of appreciation towards the reality of mental health and certainly an insensitivity. Do your bit to make this world the better place it was intended to be. Be more mindful of others. Perhaps, it is just as well you remained anonymous after all.

ANTISEMITISM IN THE TORAH Dear Rabbi I would like to respectfully disagree with your response to Natalia in your column several weeks ago, when you disagreed with her suggestion of whether there is any support for idea of Anti-Semitism in the Torah. One of the reasons the mountain that the Torah was given on was called Sinai, was that at that point sinah, hatred came to the world. We also have the concept of halacha hi she’Eisav sona es Yaacov – “it is established fact that Esau will always hate Jacob.” Her suggestion that maybe G-d wants something from us is also well documented, as we saw at the time of Purim and much more recently in Europe and no doubt currently, namely if we fail to keep our distance from the non-Jews and their practices, G-d will use this tool of Anti-Semitism to make sure that the separation happens once more. Ann Dear Ann Do you think G-d created a world where He deliberately intended for haters with the sole objective of persecuting us in order to make us better people? “G-d saw the world was good.” G-d created a world that was inherently good. He also gave mankind free choice to engender

goodness or the opposite. If it was ingrained in the psyche of some to just hate us, it would be unjust for G-d to hold them accountable for their actions. At Eichamnn’s trial – Servatius offered a defence that the Germans should be acquitted because they are agents of the Almighty who has sent the Jewish people into exile to be persecuted. Salo Baron the great historical scholar said: “Had they been pursuing G-ds motives then the defence would be 100% sound. But no Nazi will ever tell you they were doing G-d’s work. On the contrary – they were looking to obliterate G-d’s people from off the face of the earth.” The actions ultimately reflect the motif hence they are held to account for everything they did. There is no support for any hate or any intended negative, in the Torah. The Talmudic Rabbis later looked back and recognised that it is the very values of the Torah that the Jewish people uphold which provokes jealousy and hatred. Hence Sinai (the mountain on which the Torah was given) can be read as sinah (hatred). But in the first instance, that’s not the world G-d intended or desired.

Inseparable, in Life and in Death BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN

Death has ascended our windows and entered our homes. It has taken children from our roads and youth from our streets. (Yirmiyahu, ch. 9) Last week two talmidim of Yeshivat Har Etzion/Gush, who had studied in my shiur, fell during battle in Aza. It was devastating week for families whose lives were shattered by an unspeakable tragedy. The death of these two boys, lifelong friends, rippled through the entire Jewish world. As their Rebbe, I am in grief. These two solider scholars lived similar, tragically shortened, lives. Each of their fathers studied in our yeshiva and raised Torah-committed families upon the values they absorbed decades ago. Their sons, profoundly identified with our yeshiva and relished the opportunity to continue their family legacy by studying in their father’s beit midrash. Dovid Schwartz’s family is a native Israeli family, whereas Yakir Hexter’s parents made aliyah from the United States. The pairing of these two families provides a sad but fitting metaphor for our yeshiva, which has been a flagship hesder yeshiva for over 50 years, while also assisting thousands of students in transitioning to aliyah. A part of our yeshiva has been torn away and there is a gaping hole. As their Rebbe, I mourn, holding back tears and clearing lumps in my throat.

DOVID

Dovid Schwartz had an incandescent smile which never left his face, radiated instant happiness, and literally climbed into your heart. He displayed quiet, understated leadership which was never aggressive or controlling. He always assumed responsibility, organizing group events or scheduling changes. He was a truth-seeker, possessing deep personal conviction, but always eager to receive helpful input from his teachers. Even after leaving yeshiva, he would periodically “check-in” with me for guidance, as he transitioned to the next stage. His intellectual curiosity inspired him to look beyond his natural setting for religious inspiration and personal growth. Though he was raised and schooled in a National Religious context, he was a regular at Chassidic tishes and shiurim. Based on his request, I started a weekly shiur in Chassidut in our Yeshiva, though we don’t typically stress this area of study. He scrupulously maintained this weekly shiur even during the difficult conditions of Corona. He deeply enjoyed parshat hashavuah, publishing a collection of his own divrei Torah in honour of his

wedding. He was deeply spiritual, yet remarkably practical, humble but strong of will. He was extremely conscientious and took meticulous notes of each shiur. Conscious that religious identity should be simple but compelling he hung three handwritten pesukim above his bed. One of them captures his short life: “I will rely upon Your kindness, my heart will rejoice in your deliverance” (Tehillim ch. 13).

YAKIR

Yakir Hexter was immensely driven, holding himself to extremely high personal standards. He enjoyed learning Mesillat Yesharim, a classic mussar work which lays out a detailed roadmap for religious development. Yet, despite his own surpassing standards, Yakir was humble about his achievements and was extremely tolerant of those who couldn’t or didn’t match his own lofty expectations. As the iconic picture of him studying with Dovid illustrates, Yakir was an exceptional listener and excelled at making other people feel heard and feel seen. He had embarked on a degree in architecture, which was true to his extraordinary ability to create space for other people. He was a magnet for English-speaking students looking for a shoulder to lean on or in need of a friendly shmooze. Extremely modest, his smile wasn’t radiant or overpowering, but inconspicuous, charming, and endearing. His smile never outshone others, but invited them to reciprocate with their own smile and their own happiness. He never drowned out others in the room. He was artistic, and an original thinker who exhibited broad intellectual sweep. Additionally, he possessed strong moral integrity and conscientiously donated charity from his various side incomes. As he deeply valued time as a commodity, he also allocated specific hours to support the needy. Though he possessed a strong moral fiber, he knew how to let loose with friends, be mischievous, and have fun. He combined finesse, imagination, modesty, moral integrity, intensity, and sensitivity.

DELICATE, BUT STRONG

One of the nicknames of Dovid Hamelech was ‫עדינו העצני‬. The first term, “Adino”, stems from the root “adin” which means sensitive or gentle. By contrast, the second word of this nickname “ha’etzni” evokes the image of a strong and durable tree, or an “etz”. Noticing this contrast, Chazal extolled Dovid Hamelech for combining spiritual sensitivity with military prowess. While in the beit midrash he was soft and tranquil, but when called to the battlefield he morphed into a toughened and hard-edged soldier.

For thousands of years our children weren’t forced to undergo this metamorphosis. Fortunately, we now enjoy Jewish sovereignty as well as a Jewish army to protect us. I am grateful to have the privilege of watching my talmidim morph from thoughtful and sensitive Torah students into courageous and brave soldiers. Sadly, there is a steep price to pay for this historical privilege.

HUMBLED BY TALMIDIM

The Talmud concludes that a Rebbe gains wisdom from his students, ‫ומתלמידי‬ ‫יותר מכולם‬. Obviously, as the study of Torah is centered on give-and-take, interaction with students yields new intellectual perspectives. Students bring fresh sets of eyes and novel approaches to Torah study. However, a Rebbe is also educated and inspired by observing his talmidim apply his values, often more successfully than he himself is capable of. As I watch the passion and commitment of my students, I wonder if I can ever live up to my own example. The commitment that Dovid and Yakir displayed toward our people and country humbles me. Obviously, I tried to instill passion and selflessness in Dovid and Yakir, but watching them risk everything for our nation and, sadly, sacrifice their lives, leaves me astonished. I am expected to provide leadership and inspiration, but I am humbled by their extraordinary commitment and hope to G-d that I can be worthy of the privilege He gave me to teach them during their brief time on this Earth.

POTENTIAL UNFULFILLED

A Rebbe looks into the future, planting seeds which one day, b’ezrat Hashem will germinate into a life of Torah, morality, family, country, and idealism. Every talmid brings a world of potential and possibility. Tragically my hopes and dreams for Dovid and Yakir have now been cut short. All that remains is a gaping hole of potential unfulfilled. In place of a future, there is only sadness. Amidst the gloom, I take one slight solace, knowing that they returned to Hashem in pure and unsullied innocence. People who die at an advanced age, bear the scars, frustration, and failure which this world brings. Hashem created us pure and perfect, yet life breaks us down. As Dovid and Yakir were just beginning their life’s journey, they hadn’t yet been blemished by the pain of this world. They returned to Hashem pure and pristine, just as He created them. The pure souls that Hashem delivered to us have been returned practically untarnished.

FRIENDS

Their death is even more painful given the strong friendship they enjoyed throughout their life. Dovid and Yakir befriended each other in High School and maintained their bond through yeshiva, army training, and officers training. They served together until their death. They lived most of their lives locked in loving friendship and ascended to Heaven together. The iconic picture of them studying in our Beit Midrash captures the exquisite beauty and agonizing pain of their friendship, in life and in death. Our people are recovering from a terrible year of strife and social discord. The war has involuntarily thrust unity upon us, and we are currently riding a euphoric wave of national solidarity. We all seek ways to preserve this national unity for the long term. Perhaps we should improve our own friendships, both with our personal friends, but also, with every member of our nation. Friends can disagree, but their bond of friendship cannot fray. My revered Rebbe, Rav Amital, who suffered the loss of 8 talmidim during the Yom Kippur War, delivered passionate sichot prior to Neilah and the closure of Yom Kippur. He lamented that since Hashem doesn’t tolerate forgery, human beings who are riddled with falsehood and lies, cannot properly daven to Hashem. He consoled us by stressing that Hashem also listens to the cry of the broken-hearted. A Jew who lives history is broken-hearted. ‫לב נשבר ונדכה אלקים‬ ‫לא תבזה‬. We are broken hearted by the loss of Dovid and Yakir. I will miss them each dearly. Tragically, there is already half a minyan of Gush talmidim in shamayim. Please Hashem, end our suffering and protect all of our soldiers. The writer is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/Gush, a hesder yeshiva. He has smicha and a BA in computer science from Yeshiva University as well as a masters degree in English literature from the City University of New York.

We are nearing the end of the plague season in Egypt! The last three were locusts, intense darkness and finally, the killing of the firstborns. At that point the Jews were finally sent out of Egypt but not before they had a special meal, which we in some ways copy till

today! Matza and Maror (bitter herbs) in particular! They also had a special Korban – a lamb prepared by roasting and they enjoyed it all with their shoes on and walking stick in hand… Off they go in the morning, straight into a desert, fully trusting

Jewish Riddle This weeks Question: When would I have to make at least 20 berachot because I drank one cup of orange juice?

DARKNESS • FIRSTBORN • LAMB • LOCUSTS • MATZAH • PASSOVER • PLAGUE • TEFILLIN

2

Last weeks Answer: When can a person be called to the Torah for 3 successive aliyot on the same day?

Answer: A kohen is called to the Torah for maftir, which is the last aliya on Shabbat morning. He then goes to the afternoon service where he is called up first for the kohen aliya. There is no levi, so he receives the next aliya in place of a levi. (Well done Mr Y Fink for getting the right answer)

Email your name, age, where you live and the answer to office@thejewishweekly.com! Next weeks paper will feature the answer and will mention one person who gave the correct answer!

Dear Marc We have a financial dilemma. My spouse and I are retired. We don’t want our children to have to pay 40% inheritance tax but we also might need care in the future and don’t want to have to be dependent on our children. We own a second property which is rented out and have various savings and investments. Is there a way to mitigate inheritance tax and keep control and access to our money for now ? Mr and Mrs Cohen Dear Mr and Mrs Cohen Your dilemma is a common one! A competent adviser will be able to direct you through all the important issues you should consider and decisions you need to make to reduce your estate’s inheritance tax liability. Gifting to your children is an option for mitigating inheritance tax. However, this option presents two problems. Firstly, it takes 7 years for the gift to fully exit your estate for tax purposes. You might not have that long before you pass away! Secondly once you gift, you lose access and control of that money/asset. Therefore, it’s not a viable option as you would have to be dependent on your children’s generosity to meet your potential care needs. An attractive alternative option you ought to consider is investing in assets that qualify for Business Relief. The benefits of this option are that it only takes ownership of two years for those assets to be deemed exempt from inheritance tax and you can retain access and control of your money indefinitely. No gifting is required. If you hold these investments at death and they have been held more than two years, these investments will be exempt from inheritance tax. You can also use these investments to pay for your prospective care costs. Investments that qualify for Business Relief come in various forms and with different advantages and disadvantages as well as risks to each investment. Seek advice for an appropriate investment.
