RedShield 7TH OCTOBER MAGEN DAVID ADOM RESPONDS On October 7th Hamas terrorists launched a deadly surprise attack on Southern Israel. At least 1,200 people were slaughtered in cold blood, with thousands more injured. Over 240 men, women, children and babies, were taken to Gaza as hostages, where the overwhelming majority remain captive.

inside, 11 Magen David Adom team members lost their lives in trying to save the lives of others. Running into an emergency scene whilst others look to run away is what defines the bravery of MDA’s medics, paramedics and volunteers. They will forever be our heroes. Were it not for our armoured and bullet-proof ambulances, more would have died.

From just after 6.30am on that Saturday morning, when the first call for help was received to a Magen David Adom dispatch centre, we responded. Although this was unlike any other day, MDA’s remit was the same as every other day. To save more lives.

In the two months since the atrocities, Magen David Adom, together with all of Israeli society, have responded in the only way they know how. Together. People continue to queue around the block to donate blood (60,000 units were donated in the first month after the attack. An incredible figure). Every MDA volunteer has signed-up for additional shifts. MDA in Israel is running at full capacity around the clock. Not just on the Gaza border, where rockets continue to fall, but also in anticipation of the threat to the north and the need for ongoing preparedness across the country.

The destruction caused by Hamas’ terrorist attack is still being evaluated. Our teams who were in the field were shaken by the horrific sights at the kibbutzim and communities they sought to help. Bodies of men, women, children, the elderly and even dead animals everywhere. Magen David Adom members gather at the funeral of MDA volunteer Yarin Peled, who was murdered in the October 7th massacre

I WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT I SAW

UK COMMUNITY HONOURS MDA HEROES Magen David Adom UK hosted over 400 guests at The Peninsula Hotel in Hyde Park on 4th December, to pay tribute to the heroic medics, paramedics and volunteers of MDA Israel. The event showcased the outstanding efforts of MDA since October 7th, all thanks to the tens of thousands of MDA volunteers and medics who

I have recently returned from 36-hours in Israel. As I put pen to paper to describe what I saw and how I feel, I am lost. On the one hand, it was a huge honour to meet some of the most remarkable people and hear their lifesaving stories. And yet, for all the heroics, it is impossible to see past the death and devastation. I met with Ofir, a Magen David Adom volunteer and former paratrooper commander. He told me of the pure evil encountered as he was targeted en route to the local MDA station. He miraculously survived the terrorists’ bullets. He also heard them laughing at the decapitated and dismembered bodies scattered all around. That day, Ofir told me, the MDA station car park resembled a morgue. Forty body bags filling the space. We have all seen the images on the news and across social media. But to see an armoured ambulance peppered with bullets makes you realise how close our colleagues in Israel are to danger. We mourn the 11 MDA heroes who were brutally murdered just going about their shifts. But how many more would that have been if the vehicles and protective equipment had not been so readily available? It’s a scary thought. Israel and communities around the world, have come together like never before. The response here in the UK has been truly remarkable. 7th October has changed Israel forever. Whilst we will never forget what happened, I am confident that our unity will see us through.

proudly wear their uniforms and perform their duties to save more lives as well as honour those who tragically lost their lives trying to save others. Russell Jacobs, Chairman of MDA UK, shared a message from Dr Mohammed Al-Hadid, President of the Jordanian Red Crescent who reaffirmed that “we must, as partners, remain undeterred in our joint mission to save lives” and that he and his colleagues will always be our friends and partners in saving lives. The audience was also privileged to hear the personal stories of MDA lifesavers, Adi, Ophir, Sharon and Shunit, featured in a series of films about the organisation’s immediate response on 7/10. Amongst the many esteemed speakers of the evening, Keynote Speaker, Peter Kyle MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, recounted his visits to MDA in Israel. He stated that MDA is a “world leader in health and emergency care”. This was displayed in a live stream demonstration of MDA’s dispatch technology showcase from Chief Information Officer Ido Rosenblat. Rob Rinder MBE, the compère for the evening, together with Daniel Burger, Chief Executive of MDA UK, spoke about their recent visit to Israel and the horrors they witnessed. The evening was filled with emotion and immense gratitude for all that MDA and its lifesavers do day in and day out.

Kissinger was great friend of Israel BY DAVID SAFFER

Global leaders across the decades offered tributes to former US Secretary of State, Dr Henry Kissinger, who died at home in Conneticut aged 100 last week. An iconic and influential statesmen of the 20th century, Kissinger, who fled Nazi Germany with his family to New York in 1938, served both President Gerald Ford and President Richard Nixon at the White House, securing his place at the highest level of foreign policy in American politics. A statement from Kissinger Associates said he would be buried at a private family service before a memorial service to be announced in New York City. President Isaac Herzog said Kissinger was a great friend of Israel with a brilliant mind on the global diplomatic landscape. On behalf of the State of Israel, Herzog noted: “The nation is still blessed by the fruits of the historic processes he led, including laying the foundations for the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt. In our final conversation, where I wished him a happy birthday, he told me, ‘remember, I always loved and supported Israel, and I always will.’” Kissinger, the first Jewish person to hold the position of Secretary of State, is remembered for his ‘shuttle diplomacy’ for Middle East peace to help end the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Politically active to the end, he spoke about aborting a two state solution with the Palestinians following Hamas’ October 7 massacre in Israel, reportedly telling Politico: ‘I don’t see a peaceful outcome with Hamas involved in the conflict. I would favour negotiations between the Arab world and Israel. I do not see, especially after these events, that direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians are very fruitful.’ Regarding long-term Middle East peace, Kissinger stated: ‘A formal peace agreement doesn’t guarantee a lasting peace. The difficulty of the two-state solution is shown by the experience of Hamas. Gaza was made quasi-independent by (former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel) Sharon in order to test the possibility of a two-state solution. It has led, in fact, to a much more complex situation. It has become so much worse in the last two years than it has been in 2005.’ He added: ‘Egypt has moved closer to the Arab side, so Israel will have a very difficult time going forward. I hope that at the end of it there will be a negotiation, as I had the privilege to conduct at the end of the Yom Kippur War. At that time, Israel was stronger relative to the surrounding powers. Nowadays, it requires a greater involvement of America to prevent a continuation of the conflict.’ When the US exited Vietnam, and during Watergate, Kissinger impacted US relations with the Soviets and China, and Cold War. A Nobel Peace Prize winner yet controversial figure, policies relating

to Vietnam, Southeast Asia and Latin America were criticised. Long after his days at the forefront of international diplomacy Kissinger remained a sought-after political figure, including when Donald Trump was in office. Through his consulting business, Republicans and Democrats sought his expertise. Aged 99, he promoted a leadership book. Nixon’s daughters, Tricia Nixon Cox and Julie Nixon Eisenhower, said Kissinger in a partnership with their father produced a “generation of peace” for the US. They noted: “Dr. Kissinger played an important role in the historic opening to the People’s Republic of China and in advancing détente with the Soviet Union, bold initiatives which initiated the beginning of the end of the Cold War. His shuttle diplomacy to the Middle East helped to advance the relaxation of tensions in that troubled region of the world.” President Joe Biden recalled the first time he met Kissinger. “I was a young Senator, and he was Secretary of State, giving a briefing on the state of the world,” he said. “Throughout our careers, we often disagreed. And often strongly. But from that first briefing, his fierce intellect and profound strategic focus was evident. Dr. Henry Kissinger Long after retiring from government, he continued to offer his views and ideas to the most important policy discussion across multiple generations.” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Kissinger set the standards for everyone who followed in the job. Former president, George W Bush said America had lost a dependable and distinctive voice on foreign affairs. Comments from other presidents followed Kissinger’s death. “Kissinger has been a friend of mine, I’ve liked him, I’ve respected him,” Donald Trump said during an Oval Office meeting in 2017.

“I read all Dr. Kissinger’s books, and I was immensely enlightened by them,” Bill Clinton said in 2000. Nixon told The Washington Post in 1999 that Kissinger had been the “greatest influence on me,” but added that “sometimes he is as wrong as hell.” Gerald Ford told the paper in 1974: “Henry in his mind never made a mistake, so whatever policies there were that he implemented, in retrospect he would defend.” Jimmy Carter described Kissinger as “brilliant and devious” in The Boston Globe in 1981. “Kissinger is an extremely complicated guy,” George H.W. Bush noted in 1974.

“Petty little unpleasant characteristics fade away, when you hear him discussing the world situation.” He added: “He is like a politician with the roar of a crowd on election eve or the athlete running out at the 50-yard line just before the kick off. The public turns him on.” In the UK, Lord David Cameron said: “He was a great statesman and a deeply respected diplomat who will be greatly missed on the world stage.” Cameron met Kissinger a few months ago when they discussed Iran, Russia and the war in Ukraine. “Even at 100, his wisdom and

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

thoughtfulness shone through,” he commented. Former prime minister, Tony Blair, said: “If it is possible for diplomacy, at its highest level, to be a form of art, Henry was an artist. He added: “Like anyone who has confronted the most difficult problems of international politics, he was criticised at times, even denounced but I believe he was always motivated not from a coarse ‘realpolitik’ but from a genuine love of the free world and the need to protect it.” Blair continued: “‘Not once did he ever stop thinking about the future, reflecting on it, and proffering wisdom upon it, most recently on the technology revolution.” Boris Johnson noted that the world had lost a “giant of diplomacy strategy and peacemaking”. He wrote: “The world needs him now. If ever there was an author of peace and lover of concord, that man was Kissinger.” Amongst world leaders German Chancellor Olaf Scholz praised Kissineger’s commitment to a transatlantic friendship. “He always remained close to his German homeland, the world has lost a great diplomat,” he said. French President Emmanuel Macron said Kissinger was a “giant of history”, adding, “Century of ideas and diplomacy had a long-standing influence on his time and on our world.” Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Kissinger’s contribution to US-Soviet relations as a “wise and visionary statesman” and contributed to strengthening global security. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida hailed Kissinger’s “significant contributions to the regional peace and stability, including normalisation of diplomatic ties between the US and China”. World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder said Kissinger, a recipient of the Theodor Herzl Award, was a “towering figure” who addressed some of the most complex issues of the mid-20th century and represented the best of the World War II generation. Lauder added that he was a statesman whose “wisdom and friendship were a beacon of light”. Born Heinz Alfred Kissinger in Fuerth, May 1923, he settled in Manhattan, changing his name to Henry. He is survived by his wife Nancy, children by his first marriage, David and Elizabeth, and five grandchildren.

Brief meetings took place as negotiations between mediators in Qatar occurred to extend a six day ‘pause in fighting’ truce between Israel and Hamas. A complication was Hamas being unaware where remaining hostages were located as they are being held by other terror factions. Herzog emphasised the release was a humanitarian duty for the family of nations and leaders of the region. Herzog called on everyone he met to utilise their political weight to speed up the process. A photograph of Herzog shaking hands with Qatar’s Emir was the first of him with an Israeli diplomat. No details of the conversation were released by Herzog’s office. Bibi invite to Argentinian President

BY HARRY SIMONS

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has invited Argentinian President-elect Javier Milei to Israel. Netanyahu thanked Milei for his support of the State of Israel in its war against Hamas and welcomed his intention to move the Argentinian embassy to Jerusalem. Although an official announcement of the move has to be ratified Netanyahu issued an invitation for Milei to visit Israel. Milei has stated he intends to convert to Judaism and made headlines on his first international trip since his election triumph by visiting the resting place of the Lubavitcher Rebbe in New York. Milei was accompanied by Chabad Chasidim at the famous site. “The prayer experience was deeply moving,” Rabbi Mendy Kotlarsky, who handles Chabad’s global activities reportedly told Chabad. “He came to express gratitude and also seek blessings, asking G-d to grant him strength in his significant mission, to successfully lead the country. This is the

most crucial thing for him, to succeed and provide hope to the citizens of his nation. Milei is very connected to the figure and leadership of the Rebbe, whose influence extends far beyond the Jewish people today.” Milei, who triumphed in October, has prayed at the tomb of the Lubavitcher Rebbe on three occasions this year according to reports. “I did not have the opportunity to personally know the Rebbe, but sought his holy blessing that I would be elected as the president of Argentina, and this blessing was realised.” Milei, who was raised a Roman Catholic, has previously spoken about the Rebbe and his teachings. During the summer, Milei visited the office of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and spoke about how he had kept a book of the Rebbe’s teachings. Milei was accompanied by Rabbi Kotlarsky along with Chabad scholar and author Rabbi Simon Jacobson. Other south American leaders to visit

Rebbe’s Chanukah campaign burns bright BY DAVID SAFFER

Fifty years ago the Rebbe launched his global Chanukah campaign. Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson’s aim was to share the light of Chanukah with Jews around the world. Many will light the first candle tonight, but sadly, there are many Jews unable to celebrate the festival for various reasons. This is where Chabad-Lubavitch emissaries annually swing into action to ensure all Jews can enjoy the Festival of Lights. And it is particularly poignant this year with Israel at war against Hamas and over 100 hostages still being held in captivity following the terror attack by Hamas on October 7. Going back five decades the Rebbe was renowned for welcoming Jews from all backgrounds and Chanukah was a time that sentiment shone brightly. He called for every Jewish home to be filled with the light of a menorah to illuminate the wider world. “We should listen attentively to what the Chanukah lights are telling us,” the Rebbe wrote in 1982. “The mitzvah of the Chanukah lights symbolises, in a tangible and visible way, all the mitzvot of the Torah, all of which are defined in terms of light.” “Living Yiddishkeit”, he added, required a “continuous growth” to enrich one’s “spiritual life”. For the Rebbe, it was essential menorah candles could be seen outside to “publicise the miracle of Chanukah” and symbolically convey a message that everyone who lights the candles must not forget those “unaware of Chanukah” or

their “Jewish identity”. “It is our duty to reach out and bring the light of living Yiddishkeit into their hearts and homes in the spirit of Chanukah in a growing measure,” he said. Chabad emissaries on six continents will light candles at over 15,000 public menorahs whilst thousands of menorah-topped cars will take to the streets. Online annually an estimated 10 million visitors will utilise Chabad’s ‘how-to’ guides. Chabad traditionally distribute 64 million Chanukah candles, over 700,000 menorah kits and 2.5 million holiday guides in 17 languages. It is a monumental effort. “There is a pre-eminence in the mitzvot connected with lighting candles, in that the effect of the action, the appearance of light, is immediately visible,” the Rebbe explained when he launched the initiative. “The mitzvah of kindling the Chanukah light is unique in that it is required to be displayed to the outside. Thus, every by-passer, including non-Jews, immediately notices the effect of the light, which illuminates the outside and the environment.” Twelve months after his famous public letter, the first menorah lighting took place outside

Independence Hall in Philadelphia then in San Franciso in 1975. By the end of the ‘70s, public menorahs were in New York City, the White House and in Los Angeles. Chabad emissaries began distributing menorah and candle kits. The uptake was a major hit alongside creative programs such as ‘Chanukah on Ice’ and olive-oil press workshops around the world. Creative thinking was essential on different continents. A boomerang-themed menorah was available in Northern Queensland, Australia. There were driveins and firework displays but for many communities the car menorah parade has proved incredibly popular and it started in the United States as part of the Rebbe’s campaign with cars of all shapes and sizes hitting the road. But how did it start? Rabbi Shmuel Lipsker was a student at Lubavitch World Headquarters in the Crown Heights, Brooklyn. He recalls building a homemade menorah and placing it on top of a station wagon, stopping to pick up flares to light it. “This was before public menorah-lightings, the concept didn’t exist,” he told Chabad. “It was such a huge attraction. We were giving out menorahs, more and more people were gathering around us. By the time we lit our

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

menorahs with the flares, we had a huge crowd. It was unbelievable.” Throughout the late ‘70s the parade gained strength and continued into the 1980s. The mid-90s brought a new development when Nochum Goldschmidt, a yeshivah student in Sydney, Australia, felt the parade needed a boost so he designed an improved car menorah, and in 1998, started CarMenorah.com to sell everything you need for every type of car. ‘Happy Chanukah’ and ‘Chabad wishes you a Happy Chanukah’ signs are well known and will be on display in every place imaginable including large sporting venues. In 1987, Rabbi Raphael Tennenhaus, co-director of Chabad South Broward County, Florida was in at the start of the boom when he lit a menorah at the Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami before 80,000 fans. Days before Chanukah, Rabbi Pinny Andrusier, co-director of Chabad Southwest Broward, was attending a farbrengen in Brooklyn and told the Rebbe of the lighting at a Miami Dolphins game. “L’chaim,” the Rebbe acknowledged, knowing the significance of a vast live and TV audience. It is now the norm for Chabad to host a ‘Jewish Heritage Night’ at games. All these years on from the Rebbe’s Chanukah wish to light up the world his dream still grows. He concluded in his famed ’73 letter, “May G d grant that everyone of us be truly inspired by the teachings of Chanukah and of the Chanukah Lights, and translate this inspiration into actual deeds, in our everyday life and conduct.”

NHS Vaccine Campaign A new campaign for and by the Jewish community in collaboration with NHS, the UK Health Security Agency London, London Boroughs and primary care is asking the community to step-up its protection ensuring family’s vaccinations are up to date for Chanukah. The resurgence of illnesses many had considered long forgotten means childhood vaccinations must be on every parent’s check list. For example localised outbreaks of measles have been reported across London, following a warning by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) this summer that the capital could be at risk of large measles outbreaks. Vaccination against childhood illnesses is highly effective in preventing the spread of serious diseases. “Vaccination against childhood illness is important to protect you and your family,” said Dr Jonathan Cohen (Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases at Evelina London Children’s Hospital). “Family gatherings, during and in the lead up to Chanukah, can also pose greater risks for the older members of our families, because children can be super-spreaders of germs, and those later in life are more vulnerable to serious illness.” Measles is a big concern in London, but other infectious diseases are a risk for children, the elderly and their families too. Pertussis, better known by some as whooping cough, has also been resurgent in some parts of our community and

polio, long considered extinct in the UK, again being a concern: with traces of the virus detected last year in London’s wastewater. “Vaccination against diseases like measles, pertussis and polio is both safe and incredibly effective. Due to a recent increase of these vaccine-preventable diseases in local communities, it’s important to stress that timely vaccination can help protect both children, and the wider community at the same time.” – said Dr Tamara Djuretic, Joint Director of Public Health Barnet and the Royal Free Group. Vaccination against these diseases is available on the NHS, and is free to all. Every child has a Red Book showing their vaccine history, and parents are being urged to check these to ensure their children are fully up to date with all of the jabs available. Dr Ellie Cannon, NHS GP and broadcaster said: “Check your personal child health record (PCHR) – often called the ‘red book’ - to see if they are up to date on all their immunisations. If you think your children may not be up to date with their vaccines, you can speak to your GP surgery team to book the appointment. You do not need to wait to hear from them.” For children who have reached adulthood without being up to date with their childhood vaccinations, ‘this is still available up to and including the age of 25 – your GP will have all the information you need.

As you prepare for Chanukah Check your family’s vaccinations are up to date and keep our community safe and protected from serious diseases. If you think you or your children have missed any vaccinations, contact your GP or scan the QR code to catch up. Something as simple and safe as vaccinating our children can also help protect older relatives and our wider community, by stopping the spread of infection.

50 US cities attend antisemitism conference

BY ADAM MOSES

Combat Antisemitism Movement hosted the North American Mayors Summit Against Antisemitism in Fort Lauderdale. Community leaders from over 50 cities discussed the surge in antisemitism targeting Jewish communities following the Hamas terror attack on Israel on October 7. The summit looked at best practices to combat antisemitism. Mayors of Cleveland, Richmond, Las Vegas, New York City and Miami were among delegates. Participants included police officers and council members at panel sessions. A 10-step rapid response action plan was agreed. Long-term strategies were established to aid zero-tolerance policies in each city. A CAM spokesman said: “A topic of discussion was the recent troubling surge in hate crimes. Questions were raised about social factors that have contributed to hatred and the need to address issues urgently. It became evident to all participants that there is no distinction between antizionism and antisemitism. Calls to dismantle the State of Israel, incite a new intifada or advocate for the ‘liberation

of Palestine’ from the ‘river to the sea’ are considered antisemitic behaviours.” They added: “I take pride in the partnerships we have forged with cities across the US. I firmly believe that these leaders possess the power to effect positive change.” Fort Lauderdale Mayor and Summit Chair Dean Trantalis and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, CAM CEO Sacha Roytman and Jewish Federations of North American President Eric Fingerhut addressed the summits opening dinner. Diego Engelbert and Maayan Sigal-Koren, who have nine family members held hostage by Hamas called for international intervention to ‘bring them home’. Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney

received the Civic Leadership Award for municipal leaders. NBA Hall-of-Famer Alonzo Mourning received CAM’s Community Builder Award. “It is up to us as mayors and as leaders to send a clear message that antisemitism will never find refuge in our cities, that none of our residents should have to live in fear.” said Mayor of Richmond, Virginia, Levar Stoney. The next day’s plenary session included keynote remarks by Cleveland MayorJustin Bibb, Las Vegas City Councilwoman Victoria Seaman and Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organisations CEO William Daroff. Panels addressed municipal-oriented approaches to confronting antisemitism

and securing Jewish life. Stephen K. Benjamin, Assistant to President Joe Biden spoke about the role mayors play in implementation of the first US National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism launched this year. “The work has not changed since October 7th, it’s only sped up, said Benjamin, Senior Advisor to Bidem and Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement. The summit ended with a gala dinner in Hollywood, Florida. Main speakers included New York Police Department Commissioner Edward Caban, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, CNN host Van Jones, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley and Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy. Natalie Sanandaji, a survivor of the Nova music festival massacre, gave a harrowing account of the massacre. Natalie has joined CAM as a project manager. The European Mayors Summit Against Antisemitism conference takes place in Dortmund this week. Leaders from over 60 cities were expected to attend.

Sporty youngsters raise £27K for Israel BY HARRY SIMONS

Four sporty youngsters from London have raised £27,000 for the MyIsrael emergency appeal. Funds raised are benefiting Israelis throughout the country as the war with Hamas intensifies into southern Gaza. Daisy and Jamie Gershon, and Noah Landau, raised over £12,000 by organising a football tournament as part of their barmitzvah project. Joining the fundraising action, Daisy Gershon, spearheaded a remarkable netball tournament that raised a £15k. Both competitions attracted fans across the generations. With over 150 participants, including 30 football teams, the events featured thrilling matches. There were also Israel-themed cupcakes for sale and raffles offering Premier League football tickets. The boys decided it would be a great idea to combine two things we love, football and Israel in their barmitzvahs year. They secured sponsors to donated £1 for every goal scored. “Children in Israel are having a really hard time since the war started and we thought this was a good way to support people our age who are suffering,” they

noted. Daisy added: “After the war broke out we felt compelled to be of some support to our ‘brothers and sisters’ in Israel. I love sport so this is an ideal way to raise money and awareness whilst encouraging people to collectively participate in sport.” Julianne Jayson, MyIsrael Trustee, who attended the football tournament, said: “All teams wanted to win but knew they were raising money for Israel was the real aim. People bought raffle tickets, cupcakes, homemade biscuits and played their hearts. We are so grateful to everyone for organising such an amazing fundraising activity. Well done to all involved.” On supporting the charity, Jayson added: “It has been incredible to watch how the UK community have supported MyIsrael since the war broke out. These sports tournaments have brought the community together in such a meaningful and special way and we are so grateful.” The sporting initiative has boosted MyIsrael’s urgent response to devastating attacks on Israel. The organisation, faced with an overwhelming demand for financial assistance, are ensuring donations reach

where they are needed most. All funds raised goes directly to the cause. In the past month, donations have supported essential initiatives, including 3,000 therapy dolls for victims of the October 7th terror attack by Hamas. Support groups have been established for Daisy Gershon partners of fallen soldiers and laptops for children in Ashkelon so they can attend online school and time to take their mind off worries. Mob Rule? OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN

Last Saturday 2 December 2023 there was an anti-Israel demonstration in central Manchester. I say anti-Israel because this what these demonstrations are about, hating Israel and for that matter Jews. Jews because we have all seen the impact of these demonstrations on our community and there is no doubt that this is the intention of most of the demonstrators. That though is not what bothered me, notwithstanding that these events reflect the massive increase in Jew-hate around the country. What bothered me was that the police arrested a demonstrator and then let him go. I am not sure for what, but I am sure he was arrested. The protesting mob then surrounded the police van yelling ‘let him go’ and sure enough, the police let him go. Just like that. As far as I could tell from the video there was no shortage of back-up, no attempt to take the person

7 DECEMBER 2023

arrested to the police station, the police just simply let him go, to the delight of the demonstrators. I am sure that the officers at the time will claim that they were concerned for public order if they didn’t release the man, and also for their own safety and that of their fellow officers. Maybe they were right. Maybe the mob was so large that their safety would have been compromised. Maybe the safety of the demonstrators might have been compromised. Maybe. Yet how did this happen in the first place? The answer sadly is simple. The police are hopeless and I am astonished they arrested anyone at all. The Jew-haters have carte-blanche to wander up and down the streets of the UK calling for the destruction of Israel and death to Jews and the police do almost nothing. I say almost because if I were to say

absolutely, some pedant would no doubt claim that a single number of people were arrested out of hundreds of thousands. I have said it before and say it again, if three people took to the streets demanding the deportation of Muslim asylum seekers they would be arrested immediately, and no doubt tried and sentenced within a couple of weeks. No year-long investigation ending in the dropping of charges for them as with the hate convoy from Bradford. No wringing of hands over failure to find those filmed attacked the ‘Chanukah bus’ last year. Absolutely not. We are simply not being protected. There is a very serious result of the police’s fail to prevent the demonstrations or arrest the Jew-haters. They are enabling the

massive rise in anti-Semitism. By doing nothing to stop the demonstrations and failing to arrest the Jew-haters and even if they do, letting them go, the police are just saying to them, hate away, do what you like, we are not going to stop you. For 2 months now this has been the case and so the hate gets worse, the attacks more violent and it is only a matter of time before someone is badly injured or worse. It has been so bad the Home Secretary tried to intervene but without success. The police it would appear are out of control. The justice system in this country is based upon an equality before the law. For the Jews, this has clearly and absolutely broken down. Only time will tell if is repaired. Robert Festenstein is a practising solicitor and has been the principal of his Salford based firm for over 20 years. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.

Go away darkness, make A message from our way for the light Prime Minister BY MICHAEL BEN BARUCH, DIRECTOR UK & IRELAND ISRAEL GOVERNMENT TOURIST OFFICE

As we celebrate Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, we’re reminded of a powerful message: the triumph of spirit and light across the world. “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,” says the Lord Almighty. This festival symbolizes not just a historical victory but a victory of light over darkness, hope over despair, and a deep-rooted passion for life. The Maccabees, our ancestors, weren’t backed by might, sophisticated weapons, or overwhelming numbers. Instead, their strength lay in their spirit—a Jewish spirit that yearned for freedom and was willing to fight for it. This spirit is exactly what we need and what we’re witnessing in Israel right now. As early Zionist thinker A.D. Gordon observed, “There will be no victory of light over darkness as long as we do not face the simple truth that rather than fighting the darkness, we must amplify the light.” The events of October 7th have only magnified this truth, a truth well known to us, the Jewish people, and particularly to Israelis: Our mission is to bring more light into the world. At the Israel Tourist office in the UK, we are wholeheartedly committed to revitalizing tourism in Israel. We firmly believe in the power of tourism as an expression

of what travel truly means—an embodiment of light, freedom, curiosity, and the eagerness to explore new places, people, and cultures. Tourism, in its essence, is the clearest marker of freedom. When it returns to Israel, it will be a testament to the victory of the Spirit and the Light. We are optimistic that tourism will make a robust comeback, thanks to the dedication of numerous partners like you who strive to highlight the best in the world. Together, let us light up the world and bring back the joy of travel to Israel! Happy Hanukkah!

“As we welcome the beginning of Chanukah, it’s important to recognise the challenging times being faced by our Jewish friends everywhere. “For many families, the tragedy of recent events will hang heavily on celebrations, but the resilience you have shown is humbling. “As we commemorate the recovery of

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

Jerusalem all those centuries ago, I want to celebrate the enduring strength of Jewish communities. “I will be lighting the menorah with you as you mark this important festival and want you to be in no doubt that I will always stand with you.”

NJA's event illuminates media's role during war The National Jewish Assembly (NJA) is proud to have hosted another successful speaker series event, “The Sun: A Light In A Biased Media.” Held on Wednesday, November 29th, the event featured a compelling conversation between Jon Rogers, a seasoned journalist with The Sun, and Jonathan Sacerdoti, a prominent broadcaster and journalist. Amidst the backdrop of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, this Zoom event provided valuable insights into media coverage and its impact on public perception. The NJA recognises the pivotal role that the media plays during such crises, shaping narratives and influencing perspectives. Jon Rogers, with over two decades of experience covering both domestic and foreign affairs, including extensive reporting on the Israel-Hamas war, shared his unique insights into The Sun’s approach to covering this complex conflict, and his hopes that the current war will ultimately lead to a lasting resolution to the conflict. Jonathan Sacerdoti, a distinguished UK Correspondent for i24 News and Special Correspondent at the Jewish Chronicle, added depth to the discussion with his analytical expertise. Sacerdoti’s illumination of “media neutrality,” and

under which circumstances it applies, was especially insightful. Together, they illuminated the vital role that the media has in disseminating accurate information and dispelling misinformation. The event attracted a large audience, including over 120 members of the British Jewish community and individuals interested in informed, balanced reporting during challenging times. Participants engaged in a lively discussion and had the opportunity to ask questions, fostering greater understanding of the media’s role in shaping public opinion, especially during the ongoing war. The NJA remains committed to keeping the British Jewish community well-informed and prepared to combat antisemitic misinformation. By facilitating events like “The Sun: A Light in a Biased Media,” the NJA strives to empower individuals with knowledge and insight to navigate media coverage responsibly. As the Israel-Hamas conflict continues to evolve, the NJA will continue its efforts to provide accurate information and promote constructive dialogue. The organisation expresses gratitude to Jon Rogers, Jonathan Sacerdoti, and all participants for their active engagement in this critical discussion.

Media bias against Israel The National Jewish Assembly (“the NJA”) have met with David Rhodes, Executive Chairman of Sky News Group, in order to discuss media bias against Israel. Issues of concern were highlighted by Kay Burley’s interview with a Palestinian parent whose son had been killed by the IDF approximately 20 years ago. This man made many accusations against Israel and the IDF, none of which were challenged or rebuffed by the interviewer. To further stress examples of apparent failures in balance and accuracy, the NJA raised the content of two other recent interviews. One featured Palestinian activist Ghada Karmi, who was left unchallenged as she made multiple statements that seemed to justify Hamas’s acts of terrorism and rejected widely documented evidence of Hamas using civilian infrastructure for military purposes. Another featured Eylon Levy, during which Kay Burley repeated a claim made by a pro-Palestine guest that implied Israel values Palestinian lives less than Israeli lives. In addition, the NJA expressed concern about Sky’s Dominic Waghorn’s recent tweets which seemed to be humanising Yehya Sinwar and refuting the demonstrable similarities

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

between Hamas and ISIS. Notwithstanding these concerns, the NJA assured Mr Rhodes that it wanted to focus on future reporting, stressing that whilst speed is important, it should not be at the expense of accuracy. Additionally, it emphasised its support of journalists reporting on controversial issues, as long as they are providing verified, and balanced reporting and analysis. Emotions are powerful, but they must not be used by journalists to set agendas. Mr Rhodes listened to the NJA’s concerns and said that, on various issues discussed, he would be consulting with Sky’s editorial team. The NJA was grateful and appreciative of Mr Rhodes’s request that it maintains regular contact with him. Both parties believe that it is essential that Sky remains a media outlet committed to the highest levels of professional standards. Gary Mond, Chairman of the NJA, said: “An important task for all of us in the Jewish community is to fight against media bias against Israel. Meetings with broadcasters such as Sky will hopefully prove beneficial in this regard.”

PaJeS Chanukah campaign PaJeS has unveiled an initiative for Chanukah to kindle hope and solidarity amidst challenging rising antisemitism. Through a series of strategic meetings with governmental authorities, law enforcement agencies, and educational experts, PaJeS has addressed security concerns in schools and provided guidance to counter antisemitism effectively. The campaign supports the integration of Israeli children into UK Jewish schools, offering guidance, educational resources and a network of professional support to ease the transition. PaJeS aims to enhance the Jewish educational landscape by offering

comprehensive wellbeing support for school staff, trauma-informed practices and resources to navigate sensitive discussions with students and parents. The campaign embodies the eight Chanukah lights, symbolising strength in unity. Rabbi David Meyer, CEO of PaJeS said: “This campaign represents our unwavering commitment to illuminate the path forward. Our efforts are dedicated to fostering resilience, supporting integration and fortifying the Jewish educational sphere against adversity. Together, we’re kindling hope and shaping a future where education stands as a beacon of strength amidst darkness.”

Tuffkid Chanukah delights Kisharon Langdon Tuffkid Nursery pupils embraced the spirit of Chanukah with themed activities. Engaging in art, children took part in a painting experience by rolling a ball of paper soaked in oily paint creating patterns. At the painting easel, candles replaced traditional brushes, accompanied by a touch of oil altering the paint’s texture. Fascinated by the effects, the children explored the symbolic representation of the menorah, sparking artistic expressions and discussions about oil and burning candles. Candle safety was talked about too. Pupils looked into the origins of oil, getting hands-on by squeezing their own

olives. Outdoors, a log menorah was created, with yellow duck ‘flames’ enhancing its look. The festive spirit extended to the kitchen, where children participated in preparing potato latkes. Freshly cooked latkes became an addition to lunch, disappearing within moments of being served!

Nightingale Hammerson hosted the 3rd Care Home Research Forum For the third consecutive year, Nightingale Hammerson was delighted to host the hugely popular and informative Care Home Research Forum at their North London Home, Hammerson House. The Forum assembled groups of social care researchers, social care providers, care professionals, CQC representatives, government representatives, care home residents and their relatives. The Care Home Research Forum has evolved as a unique international event, where care professionals and researchers present findings from their studies, followed by an in-depth Q&A session. The event is held in person and via a live feed. We were excited to host experts from all corners of the world, including the USA, Australia, the Philippines, India, China, Israel, South America and several countries in Europe.

“Good care can only be provided with a good knowledge base and good empathetic practice.” Jackie Morris, retired geriatrician and member of the Scientific Committee. The areas of discussion included Dementia, Funding for Care Provision, Social Connection, Intergenerational Engagement and many more interesting topics. We examined research on the emotionally charged decision to move into a care home, carer burnout and the prevention of social isolation. Research plays a crucial role in the way we shape the future of social care. Nightingale Hammerson’s commitment is once again demonstrated by the organisation of this international event. Knowledge is power. This enlightening conference revealed how we can disseminate this knowledge through training and education.

As the festival of Chanukah approaches, GIFT has been actively engaged in numerous initiatives aimed at spreading joy and giving back to the community. With a mission to foster a spirit of giving, the organisation has orchestrated a series of heartwarming events and initiatives across various services. Among the notable activities, GIFT received a very generous number of toys from Camp Simcha toy drive, donated by the local communities, culminating in the distribution of over 300 presents to GIFT families. Dedicated volunteers poured their time and effort into beautifully packaging these gifts, ensuring children would receive them in time for Chanukah. The Menorah Mitzvah Mission saw incredible success as GIFT surpassed its fundraising goal, raising an impressive £35,000. Spearheaded by a devoted group of individuals, this initiative aimed to provide 100-shekel vouchers to wives of soldiers in Israel, an act of kindness to brighten their Chanukah. Collaboration was at the heart of another heartening event, as GIFT joined forces with Norwood and JFS for a special session where residents from Norwood and school children from JFS came together to package Menorahs.

Education and engagement were key components as GIFT actively involved over 300 students from five schools in crafting Chanukah decorations, Dreidels in jars, and preparing doughnuts for those in essential services, instilling the values of giving and sharing from a young age. Thanks to the benevolence of generous donors, GIFT was able to send Chanukah packs to families, containing essential items such as menorahs, candles, and chocolate coins, enhancing the festive experience for many. “This Chanukah through the united efforts of British Jewry, and the generosity of so many, we have raised enough money to gift over 1750 children, directly affected by the horrific attacks of 7th October, pre- loaded gift cards for them to spend in retail outlets across Israel. The success of the Menorah Mitzvah Missiona Gift Campaign reminds us that even in the most challenging of times, the light of compassion and unity shines brightest.” Amelia Becker - Menorah Mitzvah Mission As Chanukah approaches, GIFT continues its commitment to creating a culture of generosity and kindness, spreading warmth to those in need.

What are the Chanuka Candles Telling Us? BY SIVAN RAHAV MEIR

According to a famous Chasidic saying, “We need to listen to what the candles are telling us.” Here is a portion of what the Lubavitcher Rebbe learned from the candles: 1. The importance of tradition. As opposed to the other holidays, the events of Chanukah do not appear in the Bible. They took place later on and therefore the Sages found no passages to explain our celebration of Chanukah. It was only over many generations that its celebration was fixed in the Talmud. Thus, the essence of the holiday teaches us about the importance of tradition, the words of our Sages, and the oral Torah. 2. To be ready for darkness. We do not light the candles in the morning but rather when darkness falls. We know that

”Our home is a source of light that shines more brightly that any outside light”.

life brings periods of darkness and so we need to be prepared and exert every effort to bring light. 3. To light up the world. We light the candles inside our home with the candles facing outwards. Our home is a source of light that shines more brightly than any outside light.

4. To add light. The manner of lighting on Chanukah increases light since we add one candle each night. It does not matter how much we did yesterday, we must go forward and do a little bit more each day. 5. To be immovable. The candles are set in a certain place and it is forbidden to

flock. Yaakov sends Yosef to meet them. His brothers plot to kill him. Reuven dissuades them, advising them to throw Yosef in a pit, but not to kill him. Reuven plans to rescue Yosef and return him to his father.

but he does not find her. Yehuda is later told that Tamar is pregnant and orders her to be burned to death. As she is taken out, she declares that the owner of the surety is the father. Yehuda recognises the objects and admits his role. Tamar is spared and gives birth to twins, Peretz and Zerach.

move them. A Jew who is preoccupied with lighting up his surroundings needs to know that this mission is established in his soul, is part of his everyday life, and that he is immovable in fulfilling it. 6. To give light to others so they can shine on their own. The candles continue to shine on their own after we light them. When we educate and influence, we need to make sure that what we teach is meaningful. If we do this, our students will shine on their own throughout their lives. Sivan Rahav Meir is the World Mizrachi Scholar-in-Residence and an Israeli journalist and lecturer.

Vayeishev 3rd Aliya (Shlishi) – 37:23-36

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – BEREISHIT 37:1-11

Yaakov settles in the Land of Cana’an (later Israel). Yosef brings negative reports to his father about the sons of Leah, his half-brothers (Rashi). Yaakov makes a woollen tunic for Yosef, his favourite son. Yosef’s brothers become jealous. Yosef has a dream in which all 12 brothers are binding sheaves in the field. The brothers’ sheaves gather around Yosef’s sheaf and bow to it. This increases their hatred. Yosef has another dream; the sun and moon and 11 stars bow to him. He relates this to his brothers and to Yaakov, who rebukes him.

2nd Aliya (Levi) – 37:12-22

Yosef’s brothers shepherd Yaakov’s

Yosef’s brothers remove his tunic and throw him in the pit. They see a caravan of merchants approaching. Yehuda suggests selling Yosef to the merchants. Yosef is sold on repeatedly (Rashi), eventually arriving in Egypt. The brothers dip the tunic in the blood of a slaughtered goat and show it to Yaakov, who concludes that Yosef was killed by an animal.

4th Aliya (Revi’i) – 38:1-30

Yehuda has three sons – Er, Onan and Shela. Er marries Tamar, but is killed by G-d. Yehuda instructs Onan to marry Tamar. Onan also dies. Sometime later, Yehuda’s wife dies. Tamar disguises herself and approaches Yehuda at a crossroads. Unaware of her identity, he consorts with her, for the wage of two kid goats. He leaves her his ring, coat and staff as surety. Yehuda sends a friend to take the payment to the unidentified lady

Point to Consider: Why did Yehuda not instruct Shela to marry Tamar after the death of Onan? (see Rashi to 38:11)

5th Aliya (Chamishi) – 39:1-6

Yosef is sold to Potiphar, the Chamberlain of the Butchers. Yosef is very successful and Potiphar places him in charge of his household.

6th Aliya (Shishi) – 39:7-23

Potiphar’s wife tries to seduce Yosef, who rejects her advances. One day they are alone in the house. She tries again and catches his garment; he runs away. With Yosef’s garment in her hand, she summons her household, shows them his garment and accuses Yosef of attempting to seduce her. Potiphar imprisons Yosef, who earns the trust of the chief prison officer.

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

7th Aliya (Shevi’i) – 40:1-23

Pharaoh’s baker and butler transgress against Pharaoh and are sent to the same prison as Yosef. Each one has a dream, which Yosef interprets: both will be taken out of prison in three days – the baker to be hanged and the butler to be restored to his post. Yosef asks the butler to mention his plight to Pharaoh, but he forgets to do so.

Maftir (Bemidbar 7:42-47)

The special Maftir reading for Chanukah is taken from parashat Naso, which details the offerings brought by the tribal heads to celebrate the inauguration of the Mishkan.

Haftarah for Shabbat Chanukah (Zecharia 2:14-4:7)

Yehoshua was the Kohen Gadol (High Priest) at the time of the inauguration of the second Temple. The prophet Zecharia describes an angel warning Yehoshua to listen to G-d’s laws and perform the Temple services properly. The angel shows Yehoshua a Menorah with olive trees on either side of it, symbolising prosperity and spirituality.

Waking Up in the Morning, and Dressing 1.

Rav Chaim’s Tikkun Chatzos is worn out from use.

When Rav Chaim woke up, he recited Birchos HaTorah (see below, 3), and then recited Tikkun Chatzos in a beseech ing manner. He sat on a regular not remove his shoes or place chair, and did ashes on his head. He general ly recited only Tikkun Leah, not Tikkun Rachel or any additional supplications. See Shulchan Aruch 1:3 and Mishnah Berurah 9. In recent years, Rav Chaim usually awakened shortly after midnight to recite Tikkun Chatzos and to learn without interrupt ion until the morning. In the earlier years, Rav Chaim would sometimes learn until very late at night and consequently wake up somewhat later. Nevertheless, if he awoke before alos hashachar, he would still recite Tikkun Chatzos, even though it was past midnight. To those who inquired with regard to Tikkun Chatzos, he likewise ruled that it may be recited any time before daybreak. If it happene d that Rav Chaim awoke after alos hashachar, however, he would not recite the Tikkun.

Rav Chaim explained that the reason he did not recite Tikkun Rachel was because he usually did not recite Tachanun, since he often serves as a sandek or a mohel davens in his minyan. When Tachanun is not recited, neither is Tikkun Rachel. Rav Chaim was asked if the Chazon Ish said Tikkun Chatzos, and he answered that he does not know whether the Chazon Ish recited Tikkun Chatzos, but his father, the Steipler Gaon, did recite it.

Includes hundreds of photos!

2. Rav Chaim made every effort to be learning or davening during the times when night turns into day and day turns into night, as the Shelah Hakadosh wrote. See Mishnah Berurah 1:2.

ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com IT DIDN’T START OCTOBER 7TH Dear Rabbi I note your remarks last week about the United Nations being a mockery and completely unreliable. I am generally completely in agreement with you. But the initial remarks of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres was surely right when he said “this didn’t start on October 7, it started 75 years ago.” Can you at least acknowledge that? Amira Dear Amira You are right. This started 75 years ago. 75 years ago the area now known as Israel and the Palestinian Territories was handed over to the UN by the British occupiers. The UN took a vote and the majority were in favour of a “two state solution.” Israel accepted, the Arabs did not. Israel declared themselves a state and the Arabs waged a genocidal war. The Arabs Lost that war. They have rejected any two state solution since and have maintained the genocidal notion of ethnically cleansing the land of Jews “from the river to the sea.” The ball has always been in their court, but they don’t want to play with Jews. Israel has always been and will always be the Jewish homeland the minute they accept that, this all ends.

ARE WE CREATING NEW JIHADISTS? Dear Rabbi Even as Israel has the right to defend itself, would you not agree with former President Barak Obama that in the process they are generating so much more hatred against Israel and creating many more Jihadists in the process? Gerald Dear Gerald So true. And the United States and United Kingdom should never have gone after the Nazis because in the process they risked engendering a whole new generation of people who hate the UK and the US. Let me remind you of the chilling words of the Hamas leadership: “We’re going to do it again and again and again.” Given have a chance the Nazis would have continued building gas chambers as well. There really is no difference between their mutual commitments to annihilating Jews. It’s all fine and dandy for Obama to air his two cents worth - and I’m not sure his words are worth even that much these days, notwithstanding however much people pay him to speak. He lost all credibility when he handed over hundreds of millions of dollars to Iran. Just imagine if the United States didn’t take the action as it did against Al Qaeda and Isis. What would the world look like now? It’s easy to be a mouthpiece when

you’re not on the frontlines anymore.

IS THE HOSTAGE EXCHANGE JUSTIFIED? Dear Rabbi What is the Jewish position on the hostage exchange at the moment? Do we do all we can to bring our own home? Barry Dear Barry First let’s clarify one thing. Those taken hostage from Israel were innocent civilians, among them many women and little children. You cannot equate them with Palestinian prisoners. The names of some of the Palestinian prisoners freed include Nafooz Jad Arad Hammad of the Hammad family in Sheikh Jarrah. She freed just as she started her 12 year sentence for carrying out a stabbing operation against a Jewish neighbour in 2021. Also released was Israa Riad Jabes who in 2015 was stopped wearing a suicide belt in Jerusalem. As she was apprehended, the explosive device detonated prematurely. She survived and prevented from becoming a martyr and gained notoriety in the Palestinian society when her request for plastic surgery was rejected. Her face was heavily disfigured remains so. Also, a number of minors were released. They had been detained for stone throwing. So while on the one hand we have to remain committed to every extent we can to bring our hostages home, we have to be mindful of the fact that those Palestinian prisoners being released, perpetuated crimes against Israel and are inclined to do the same again. The primary animal responsible for the October 7th massacre was released as part of an exchange for Gilad Shalit and that was back in 2011. Can we square the justice in that? On a human level we all come to the same conclusion. On an intellectual and Halachic level it is far more complex. One more point: Many Palestinians are not so interested in the identities of the 300 prisoners being released by Israel, but view it mainly as efforts by Hamas to increase their popularity in the West Bank at the expense of the Ramallah Palestinian Authority.

SHOULD WE CELEBRATE THIS YEAR? Dear Rabbi I live in Israel. Chanukah is approaching and there are the Chabad menorahs going up everywhere. But who’s in the mood to celebrate with everything going on at the moment? Shouldn’t we be more subdued this year? Avishai Dear Avishai Here’s my story: I was convalescing at home for the better part of 3 weeks following some significant surgery. I took a phone call last Wednesday night from

Israel: “We’ve just been given permission to host a big event on Sunday night at the Great Synagogue in Jerusalem. Until now this wasn’t allowed in the current situation. We have only 3 days to prepare and market this event. It’ll be for residents of Jerusalem as well as many of those evacuated from the South who are here. Can you come and speak to inspire the people. We’ll also have former Chief Rabbi Lau (senior) join us and some special music!” My every physical instinct was saying, “No, I can’t at the moment.” My every mental and emotional instinct was saying, “Here’s an opportunity to be there in a very real way for the people of Israel who are going through this so personally.” I explained my situation and was assured that I would be well looked after with plenty of rest. Rabbi Schochet and Chief Rabbi Lau So I flew for 24 hours to be in Israel with the people of Israel. I took in the scene of the menorahs going up. I walked enemies and the light of Judaism and relithe warm and sunny streets of Jerusalem. gious freedom shining bright once more. And I gave that lecture to an audience So, no, we shouldn’t be more subdued. of over 500 who were thirsting for some Quite the contrary. encouragement and uplift. In the process As we say in the blessing over the ChaI was even more uplifted – to see firstnukah lights: “In those days and in this hand the resolve, the determination and time.” We experienced miracles then and the spirit that is Israel. we will experience miracles once more. Chanukah is all about victory over our And to that let us say, Amen!

Torah from Israel Chanukah, Hellenism, and Hamas BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN

Jewish history isn’t random. Selected to represent Hashem and inspire moral and religious spirit, our battles aren’t local and aren’t purely geopolitical. We stand against toxic cultures which threaten both moral spirit and religious consciousness. In defeating the dangerous ideas posed by these wicked cultures, we protect the world from its own darkness. So it was, and so it always will be. Obviously, our current war with Hamas isn’t purely military and isn’t merely a local skirmish. We face sub-human barbarians who committed horrific atrocities in the name of G-d. Our eventual defeat of their culture of death, rape, and torture will protect this world from moral and intellectual collapse. The ferocious international opposition which our just war has aroused affirms that, in our battle, there is more at stake than merely the future of Gaza. Thousands of years ago, our Chanukah battles were also ideological. The Maharal, claimed that the four notorious empires or the “arba malchiyot” which visited our planet weren’t just mighty kingdoms which persecuted us and banned our religious freedom. Each empire posed a religious threat to humanity and each of these four dominant cultures introduced hazardous religious ideas, which, if left unchecked, would have infiltrated the human imagination and corrupted moral and religious experience. As the religious guardians of humanity, we battled these four empires and defended humanity from moral and religious collapse. Greece was the third of the four empires, and much was at stake for humanity at large in this epic battle between Athens and Yerushalayim. Greece was the first civilization to both organize and dramatically improve our world. The word “cosmos” is a Greek term which translates into ‘order’, reflecting their newfound ability to organize and rationalize a previously vast and disorderly universe. Greek advances in science and mathematics lent predictability to a world, which for the ancients, had seemed chaotic and intimidating. Greece also developed a rudimentary form of democracy, which offered a degree of fair and equitable government. Furthermore, major advances in art and culture enriched the aesthetic quality of human experience. Greece was brimming with confidence as it sought to relandscape a new enlightened pan-Greek society, centered in Athens, which would unify man in pursuit of a more civilized

and elegant lifestyle. Greece offered great hope for the human future. Yet, despite these possibilities, Greek Hellenism was based upon flawed religious concepts which threatened the evolution of religion. Our defeat of Hellenism dismissed these erroneous notions, preserving moral spirit.

HELLENISM AND HAMAS On the surface, there is nothing in common between our ideological war with Hellenism and our cultural war with Islamic fundamentalism. These struggles are separated by thousands of years and are being waged against very different cultures. However, each of these battles is centered upon the same city of Yerushalayim, and evidently, as different as they seem, they share a common feature. Nothing in Jewish history is random, everything repeats itself.

DIVINE IMAGE? In its rejection of ancient paganism, Greece renounced molten idols and no longer imagined gods to be grotesque, heavenly monsters. Yet, for all their religious progress Greece was utterly incapable of discovering a One Hashem responsible for all creation. Instead, Heaven was occupied by a noisy pantheon of gods and goddesses each with specific domains and responsibilities. The Greek gods who inhabited Mt. Olympus, weren’t very much different from us, but were merely larger and stronger versions of Man. Within this cavalcade of gods, the details of Man’s creation remained murky. Greek mythology provides differing accounts as to how Man originated. In one famous myth Prometheus fashions man and delivers him creativity, only to anger a different god, named Zeus. The creation of Man is tangled in the rivalries between warring gods. Even amongst classical Greek philosophers, such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, who studied virtue, knowledge, and the nature of the human soul, the description of Man’s creation is either absent or vague. Though Greece broke with crude paganism and introduced philosophical inquiry, it could not imagine a one Hashem Who both created Man and endowed him with Divine image. Instead believing in G-d creating Man in His image, Greece continued to craft gods in human image. Being that Man wasn’t fashioned with any surpassing divine image, he didn’t possess any distinctive or lofty features

to distinguish him from the rest of the cosmos. Man didn’t possess autonomous free will because there was no all-powerful Hashem to grant it to him. Without free will, Man was left entirely to the whims of fate. In a famous mythological tale, Oedipus is prophetically informed that he will murder his father and marry his mother, yet his efforts to reverse this tragic fate are futile. Fate, not free will, determines human experience. Our defeat of Hellenism reinforced the belief in an all-powerful Hashem who crafted Man as the masterpiece of His creation. Moreover, Hashem gifted us with divine image including traits such as speech, creativity, consciousness and free will. Reverence for Hashem demands respect for every human being gifted with divine image. Belief in Hashem demands respect for Man. Though Greece took dramatic leaps, without belief in divine image, its ability to spur human progress was severely limited. Without belief in divine image Greek influence on the human development was capped. By the 3rd century the Roman empire, the cultural descendants of Greece, had begun its rapid decline and the prospects for further human development were handed off to other cultures. By denying tzelem elokim or divine image, Greece could not glorify Man and was limited in its ability to advance the human condition.

WHAT WENT WRONG? In 2002, Bernard Lewis, a mid-Eastern historian authored a book entitled “What Went Wrong?”, which probed the historical factors contributing to the decline of the Islamic world, in comparison to the West. Factors such as resistance to technology, a decrease in scientific inquiry and intellectual openness, an absence of political pluralism, and the presence of stifling social structures, all led to the stagnation of Islamic culture, while the West was racing ahead. In addition to these socio-political influences there is a religious root for the relative lack of progress in the Islamic world. We believe that G-d is compassionate and desires welfare for the creatures He crafted in His image. When human beings suffer, or even when human experience is limited, we sense a religious calling to discover, innovate and transform our world. For a Jew progress, science, and discovery are driven by a religious impulse: Hashem is compassionate, fair, and just and wants human prosperity. We are His agents in

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

delivering that prosperity. To Islamic Fundamentalists, G-d is angry and vengeful. There is great joy in Heaven when innocents suffer or lose their lives. If G-d is angry and capricious, there is little religious motivation to alleviate human suffering or to ameliorate the human condition. In the West, religious-based humanism drove the evolution of modern society. While the West believed in a kind and just G-d, and labored to relandscape the world in His image, the East was bereft of any religious motivations for change and progress. A dysfunctional world of suffering and misery was in perfect concert with an impulsive and irate G-d. Hellenism could not imagine divine image, while Islamic Fundamentalism scoffs at it. You cannot believe in Man’s divine image, while also wantonly murdering, raping, mutilating, and burning human beings. If you believe in an angry and enraged G-d, these abhorrent acts can be committed in His name. Just as the Hellenists before them, Islamic Fundamentalists threaten the cardinal belief in the divine image of human beings. Just as then, it is our historical responsibility to defeat these ungodly ideas and restore belief in a One, all-powerful and merciful Hashem who crafted us in His image and desires our well-being. The Chanukah battle continues. We are modern day Hasmoneans waging a battle on behalf of tzelem elokim. The battle between good and evil wages on. There is only one ending to this battle. It just takes unwavering conviction and patience. The writer is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/Gush, a hesder yeshiva. He has smicha and a BA in computer science from Yeshiva University as well as a masters degree in English literature from the City University of New York.

Re-Examining Our Chanukah Mission BY RABBI SHMUEL REICHMAN

There was once a public debate between a rabbi and an astrophysicist regarding the nature of our universe. The astrophysicist, representing the atheist perspective, confidently approached the podium and began addressing the audience: “I don’t know much about Judaism, but I believe I can sum it up in a few words: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” With that, he went on to detail how physicists could now adequately explain the nature of our universe, without the need for religion. When he finished his speech, it was the rabbi’s turn to address the audience and represent the religious approach. With a sparkle in his eye, he turned to the crowd, and said: “I don’t know much about astrophysics, but I believe I can sum it up in a few words: twinkle twinkle little star how I wonder what you are.” With that, he went on to deliver the rest of his speech.

THE AGE-OLD DEBATE Spiritual debate has been a recurring phenomenon since the beginning of time. Chanukah is when we tap into the spiritual debate between the Jews and the Greeks, as the Greeks specifically attempted to destroy our spiritual way of life. They aimed to cut off our connection with Hashem and replace it with the worship of the natural, physical world. Yavan, the Hebrew name for the Greeks, means quicksand (Tehillim 69:3)- the Greeks sought to “drown” us in their secular culture, replacing spirituality with atheism and hedonism. The Midrash says that the Greeks attempted to darken our eyes- “hichshichah eineihem” (Bereishis Rabbah 2:4). Darkness represents a lack of clarity, the inability to perceive true form. Physical darkness prevents physical clarity, spiritual darkness prevents spiritual clarity. This was the Greek attack on the Jewish People: a distortion of truth, a darkening of knowledge and perception. For this reason, the Jewish People went to war against the mighty Greek army, and to this day we carry on that fight against Greek culture, a culture that we view as damaging and antithetical to Judaism.

GREEK CULTURE However, if we take a deeper look into Jewish literature, we find a strikingly different picture of the Greek nation and their culture. In Parshas Noach, Noach blesses his two sons, Shem and Yefes, with a seemingly peculiar bracha: “Yaft Elokim l’Yefes, v’yishkon b’ohalei Shem,” Hashem will grant beauty to Yefes, and he (Yefes) will dwell within the tents of Shem. Yefes is the precursor to the Greeks, and Shem to the Jews. This seemingly paints the Greeks in a positive light, as a beautiful nation fitting to dwell within the framework and boundaries

of Judaism. In a similar vein, the Gemara (Megillah 9b) states that despite the general prohibition of translating the Torah into different languages, it is permissible to translate the Torah into Greek due to the beauty of the language. According to both of these sources, it seems as though Greek culture does not contradict Judaism, but is meant in some way to complement it, harmonizing with Jewish ideology. How can we understand this contradiction? In order to explain it, we must first develop a deep spiritual principle.

THE SPIRITUAL-PHYSICAL RELATIONSHIP How do we understand and perceive Hashem? Is Hashem within time and space, limited to this world alone, as Pantheists believe? Or is Hashem completely transcendent, beyond time, space, and this physical world, as many of the ancient philosophers believed? The Jewish approach, as explained by the Rambam, Maharal, Ramchal, and others, is a beautifully nuanced blend of these two approaches. Hashem is transcendent, completely beyond our physical world of time and space, and yet, He is also immanent, within our physical world. This principle applies to all spirituality; we believe that the spiritual and transcendent is deeply connected to the limited and physical world. In other words, our physical world is a projection and emanation of a deeper, spiritual reality. This is the meaning behind the famous Midrash, “Istakel bi’oraisa, u’bara alma”, Hashem looked into the Torah and created the world (Bereishis Rabbah 1:1). This means that the physical world is an emanation and expression of the Torah, the spiritual root of existence. To give an analogy, imagine a projector: the image you see on the screen is emanating from the projector. The projector and film are the source, the image on the screen is the expression. Similarly, each and every one of us was once a zygote, half and male and half a female genetic code. From that single cell a fully developed and expressed human being ultimately manifested. The same is true regarding the physical world, it stems from a spiritual root, a transcendent dimension. Thus, we are able to understand and experience the spiritual through the physical, as the two are intrinsically connected. If you’re wondering how to understand this concept, consider the way other human beings experience, relate to, and understand you. All they have ever seen is your physical body. They’ve never seen your thoughts, your consciousness, or your emotions. The only way they can understand you is by relating to how you express yourself and your internal world through your physical body. Through your words, actions, facial expressions, and body language, other people experience what’s going on inside of your body, inside of your head, inside of you. The same is true regarding our experience of Hashem and the spiritual. We

can’t see spirituality, only physicality. We must therefore use the physical to connect back to the spiritual root.

THE BATTLE OF CHANUKAH The Greeks sought to uproot this Jewish perspective, to detach the physical world from its higher root. They claimed that human beings have no connection to anything higher than the physical world itself, and that it’s therefore impossible to connect to Hashem. As the Ramban explains (Ramban Al Ha’Torah, Vayikra 16:8), the Greeks believed only that which the human intellect could grasp. Anything that requires spiritual sensitivity, that transcends rational proof alone, was dismissed as false. Even the Greeks gods were glorified humans- as anything that transcended the physical, human world was dismissed. In essence, the Greeks served themselves.

THE JEWISH PERSPECTIVE The Jewish approach is much more nuanced. We embrace human intellect and reason but are aware of a realm that transcends it. We recognize the wisdom of science, medicine, psychology, mathematics, and other forms of worldly wisdom, but also recognize a higher form of wisdom, the Torah. As the Vilna Gaon explains, where logic and human intellect ends, Jewish wisdom begins. The reasoning behind this principle is based on the aforementioned idea: the physical world is an expression of the spiritual world. Just as the physical world stems from a higher, spiritual realm, physical wisdom is an expression of a higher form of wisdom, the Torah. While the wisdom of the physical world is true, it stems from a higher truth, the Torah. Torah is the absolute foundation and root; all physical wisdom is its expression.

THE IDEAL RELATIONSHIP The ideal is for the physical wisdom of the Greeks and Yefes to reside within the tent of Shem, for science and the wisdom of the world to be in harmony with Torah. The problem occurred only once the Greeks denied the existence of anything beyond their independent intellectual wisdom. This was the battle of Chanukah. The Greeks tried to destroy the Torah, which contradicted their ideology, and the Jews were forced to fight for their beliefs, to defend their spiritual connection with Hashem and the transcendent wisdom of Torah. Rav Hutner explains that Chanukah is the chag of Torah Sheba’al Peh, the Oral Torah. Chanukah is the one holiday with no source in Torah Shebiksav. Unlike Purim, it does not even have a Megillah; it is completely of Rabbinic origin. Furthermore, it doesn’t even have a Mishna; the only canonized source for Chanukah is a few Gemaras which mention Chanukah in an almost coincidental manner. Why is this so? Chanukah represents the battle against

the Greeks. The Greeks claimed that the only source of truth is the human intellect; nothing transcends human logic. The Jews not only showed that there is a transcendent source of truth, but took it one step further. When done appropriately, with humility and proper recognition of the Torah’s transcendent root, the limited human being can actually use his human intellect to participate in the creation of Torah. This is the unbelievable nature of Torah Sheba’al Peh: human beings are given the ability to participate and even create novel Torah ideas and insights. The greatest victory over the Greeks wasn’t to simply prove that transcendent Torah exists; it was to reveal that even the human intellect can connect to Torah, even limited human beings can connect to the infinite.

OUR PLACE OF CONNECTION The Greeks tried to spiritually destroy our Beis Ha’Mikdash, the point of connection to the transcendent, where Hashem most intimately connects to this physical world. After our victory on Chanukah, we reignited the flame of that spiritual building, and every year since, we must reignite that same flame within our own homes; we must inaugurate our own personal Beis Ha’mikdash. Every day, we get to choose whether we’ll become further entrenched in secular and Greek culture, or if we’ll build our connection to the infinite, the transcendent, and carry the message of Chanukah deep within our hearts. Our life is like building a personal Beis Ha’Mikdash, building an ever-deeper and ever-closer relationship with Hashem. It’s the result of every brick we lay down; every day is like another brick, another opportunity to add to our eternal home, our eternal self, our eternal existence. . Lighting Candles of Hope BY RABBI LEO DEE

During my childhood in London, I was privileged to know Rabbi Hugo Gryn, a charismatic and beloved spiritual leader, who was a survivor of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Rabbi Gryn once told us how his father, weeks before Chanukah, would start swapping part of his bread rations with the other inmates for margarine rations that he could light on Chanukah. The young Hugo challenged his father, “How can you give up food for this mitzvah, which is not even biblically commanded, and put your life and health at risk?” His father’s memorable answer was: “Man can live three weeks without food, three days without water, but not three moments without hope.” I was doubly fortunate, later in my life, to attend Shabbat lectures by the inspirational Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, together with my late wife Lucy. Rabbi Sacks would explain the true meaning of hope. He would say: “Optimism is believing that life will get better. Hope is doing an action to make sure that it does.” The beauty of Jewish practice is that every mitzvah is an action which brings hope. The way that we light our Chanukah

candles represents our hope for the future. Rav Avraham Yitzchak Kook offers a fascinating explanation for the famous dispute between Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel. The students of Beit Shammai suggested that we should light eight candles on the first day of Chanukah, and one less each day until the end of the holiday. We follow the opposing opinion of Beit Hillel, starting with one candle on the first day and increasing the number each night, to light eight candles at the end of the holiday. Rav Kook explains Beit Shammai’s reasoning based on the role of Jews in the world to build an understanding of the One G-d. On that basis, we would start Chanukah with a plurality that represents the confusion of global values, and then we focus in on the Oneness of G-d. Beit Hillel, on the other hand, believes that the task of Jews in the world is to incrementally increase the light of truth, in order to build awareness of G-d in the world. In his unique style as a harmonizing force, Rav Kook reconciles these two opinions. He explains that Beit Hillel shares Beit Shammai’s view that our role is to promote G-d’s Oneness in the world, but they understand that the best way to

do this is by increasing the light. Increasing the light creates hope for a better future. We have been living in a dark world for some decades; so dark, in fact, that many people didn’t even realize that there once was a light. The darkest moment in our recent history occurred in Israel on Simchat Torah - on the very day when we read the Torah portion that says “Let there be light!” That’s the light of hope. The light at the end of the tunnel. On Chanukah, we celebrate the victory of good over evil. Just like the original Hasmonean soldiers, our brave IDF soldiers are fighting today against the Hellenistic barbarians at our borders. The fight on the streets of European cities and American campuses is an echo of the same fight between the forces of light and darkness, between truth and lies. Those who believe in a life of hope and a better future, and those who would extinguish it. Just like those who were determined to light a tiny flame of hope in the darkest days of Jewish history, we need to show the same courage to light our Chanukiot in these dark and menacing times. As we light the candles of hope in our homes and in our streets, may the light of The

One G-d shine even more brightly. May we all merit to see G-d’s Oneness with clarity, and may we not abandon our hope for even a moment. Rabbi Leo Dee is an educator and lives in Efrat. Brothers fighting – sadly this has been the case throughout the book of Bereishit although this week we are talking about brothers who were all tzaddikim. Yaakov had made a nice coloured cloak for his son Yosef, and Yosef had dreams which upset his brothers. In the first dream the brothers all have a sheaf of straw and

the sheaf’s bow down to Yosef’s sheaf. In the second dream, the sun, moons and stars all bow down to Yosef. The brothers sell Yosef as a slave and after a long journey he ends up in Potiphar’s house. He is so successful there and very popular, but Potiphar’s wife is a troublemaker and Yosef

Dear Jewish Care I am 85 and I’m quite independent in my own home. I am worried about the rising cost of heating bills in this cold weather so I’m trying to only put the heating on when I really need to. I wonder if you’ve got any advice on staying warm? Sarah Hi Sarah The cost of living is a real concern for many of us, and as we age, the cold affects us more but there are extra things you can do to help you to stay warm to support your health and well being this winter. It’s best to try to keep your home at 18°C (65°F) or higher. Wearing multiple thinner layers of clothes, or clothes made of wool and fleecy synthetic fibres, having plenty of hot meals, hot drinks and a hot water bottle, is beneficial too. You may be able to take advantage of support from financial schemes and discounts, such as the Warm Home Discount Scheme or Cold Weather Payments. To qualify for these, you would need to be claiming Pension Credit, a qualifying benefit or on other support. Visiting warm places and connecting socially with others saves on fuel bills, whilst boosting your wellbeing. Jewish Care’s community centres offer warmth in temperture and company, with friendly staff and volunteers, as well as stimulating activities and a hot, nourishing meal. Our Supportive Communities tea party groups also meet regularly in a warm, friendly atmosphere throughout the year and our Meals on Wheels service provides hot, nutritious meals to older people at home delivered by our volunteers. It’s important to have your yearly flu jab, free for over 65’s, order repeat prescriptions for any medications you need and keep a list of important telephone numbers by your phone for emergencies. You can visit jewishcare.org to find out more about services we run near you, or call the Jewish Care Direct helpline on 020 8922 2222 or email helpline@jcare.org if you would like any more information. Latke Sandwich

For me, Chanukah is not Chanukah unless we have latkes! Every year, I make a variation on the classic recipe; last year it was Giant Latka and this year I thought a hot latke sandwich would satisfy the ‘Chalish’. Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 15 minutes Serves: Makes 12 large latkes Ingredients

Another delicious recipe from Denise Phillips For more recipes and inspiration visit my website: www.jewishcookery.com denises_kitchen Details about forthcoming events, email: denise@jewishcookery.com

Latke 3 large potatoes – peeled and grated 1 small onion – peeled and grated 2 eggs 3 tablespoons – self-raising flour or fine matzah meal for Passover Salt and freshly ground black pepper Rapeseed oil – for frying Filling options Smoked salmon, cream cheese, lemon, dill & black pepper 4 slices smoked salmon, cream cheese, juice ½ lemon, 2 tablespoons fresh dill & black pepper. Mix all together and sandwich between 2 latkes. Garnish with sprigs of fresh dill. Cashew nut & cannellini bean pâté with chives and olives 2 tablespoons cashew nut & cannellini bean pâté, 1 tablespoon fresh chives and 20g green olives, roughly chopped. Mix all together and sandwich between 2 latkes. For the cashew nut & cannellini bean pâté: 150g raw cashew nuts – covered in water and soaked for 8-24 hours, then drained, 400g tin cannellini beans – drained and rinsed, 2 tablespoons rapeseed oil ,1 large lemon – zest and juice, 1 clove garlic – peeled and finely chopped. Blitz together and season to taste. If too thick, add water. Smashed avocado & fried egg 1 avocado, 2 eggs – mash the avocado and sandwich between 2 latkes. Top with a fried egg.

Method 1. For the latke, grate the potatoes and onions either by hand or using a food processor. 2. Squeeze the potatoes and onions dry with some kitchen paper or a clean dish cloth. Do this twice for best results. Put into a large mixing bowl. 3. Stir in the eggs, flour or matzah meal. (They are lighter using flour!) Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Heat the oil in a shallow frying pan so that it covers the base about 1cm / ½ inch deep. 5. When the oil is hot, add a spoonful of mixture. Do not over crowd the pan as it will reduce the oil temperature. Fry on both sides until golden brown. Drain on kitchen paper or a wire rack. 6. Continue frying in batches until all the potato mixture has been used up. 7. Assemble with your favourite filling. The choice is yours - but I have added some suggestions!

LOCAL COMMUNITIES RALLY FOR THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL As Magen David Adom UK launched its ‘Operation Swords of Iron’ Emergency Campaign, donors from across the country were unequivocal in their support and generosity. Funds were raised to help MDA replenish the life-saving medical stocks and equipment that are in constant and ongoing demand.

This strong sense of unity and giving was shown through a vast array of fundraising activities: from hosting fitness classes and selling products, to running marathons and holding bake sales. Magen David Adom could not be more grateful to those who contributed to this lifesaving cause. Thank you. You are all lifesavers!

In September, Magen David Adom UK hosted Table75, a series of three campaign dinners to mark Israel’s 75th birthday and raise much-needed funds for the country’s only national medical emergency and blood service. The mouthwatering Israeli cuisine and drinks were prepared and presented by the charismatic chef Avishay Siag. Avishay introduced each of his shuk-inspired

courses, followed by a carefully curated pairing with an award-winning whisky by M&H, Israel’s first whisky distillery. Guests were given a briefing from MDA Israel’s Ilan Klein and entertained by guest DJ, Miles Schechter. Across the three nights, £300,000 was raised to support the Magen David Adom teams in Israel.
