CANNES, FRANCE Marché Forville It is a lively and colourful French affair. Sellers and local producers come here to sell the most fantastic produce the region has to offer • Its dizzying array of cheese, fish, vegetables, fruit, olives, fresh pasta, charcuterie and flowers • From large producers taking several tables to single tables with one old lady selling honey or bunches of basil • There are still about 30 fishermen working in Cannes and their catch of the day comes to the market • Cannes’ top chefs shop here • Not only is the market bursting with the freshest fruit, vegetables, local fish, cheese, olives etc, but the whole district, with a huge array of artisan shops and quality fishmongers. There are little bars serving a glass of wine and three oysters, a caviar and smoked salmon shop, rotisseries, the famous Brun oyster restaurant where five people open oysters and prepare seafood on the street, all day and well into the night.

CORK, IRELAND English Market The market dates from a charter of James I in 1610. The magnificent building, finished in 1786, was damaged by fire in 1980 and then brilliantly refurbished • Many of the county’s leading artisans or purveyors have stalls here • The market still manages to retain its uniquely Cork character, with tripe and drisheen still available alongside Greek olives and Indian spices • Watch out for the

crates full of seafood, so fresh it’s still wriggling • Seek out small, indigenous cheese makers and try some of the regional cheeses such as the hard, oak smoked Gubbeen and soft and creamy Cashel Blue • Don’t miss Declan Ryan’s Arbutus breads, the best soda bread in Ireland • The olive stall is always very popular. Apart from the lovely olives, the pickled gherkins are fantastic • Head upstairs for lunch at the market’s Farmgate Café, serving fresh, hearty national dishes made from downstairs’ ingredients. The daily chalkboard menu lists the usual: Irish Lamb Stew, Tripe and Onions, Beef Shepherd’s Pie and gooey bread pudding served with heavy cream. www.corkenglishmarket.ie

HELSINKI, FINLAND Kauppatori and Wanha Kauppahalli The harbour setting and loving arrangement of the produce give this market picture-postcard perfection • Is brimming with summer delicacies like tiny potatoes, fresh crayfish and smoked moose meat • Fishermen sell fresh and smoked fish straight from their boats • The bright piles of cloudberries, bilberries and lingonberries, iridescent-green peas and baskets of tiny almond-flavoured potatoes all seem far too pretty to eat • The Kauppahalli (the Market Hall) is a beautiful brick building from 1888, where customers are noshing on shrimp salad sandwiches, moose salami, liquorice-flavoured chocolate and strong espresso • Don’t miss the smoked reindeer sandwiches from one of the indoor market stalls. www.wanhakauppahalli.com
