A row of three houses to be knocked down on Rocks Rd created plenty of interest when it was reported in Nelson Weekly a fortnight ago, mainly from people interested about what was to replace them. But for Stoke man Kerry Mitchener, it brought back a flood of childhood memories. Kerry’s grandparents used to own the home on the corner of Rocks Rd and Victoria Rd. He remembers cycling around there from his parents’ home in Vanguard St when he was a boy and standing at the door of the “widow

walk” upstairs. “But I wasn’t allowed to go on it because even then it was rotting and not safe to walk on,” he says. This was about the late 40s and early 50s and Kerry says the waterfront was a different place. He remembers the now Boatshed restaurant was a shed for a boat builder and the Boat House was a scout hall and rowing club. The cycle from Vanguard St to his grandparents was often completed without encountering any motorcars. Kerry says his grandfather was a captain for passenger boats in and out of Nelson to places like Wellington and Mo-

tueka. Captain Charles Scully called his daughter – Kerry’s mum – Tui Lily Muriel, the names of the three ships he had captained out of Nelson. Kerry says he can’t remember when his grandparents left the house but it was after Captain Scully passed away. His grandmother Emma later moved in with another daughter in Stoke. The Scully house, along with two others will be bulldozed this year, with three new town houses to replace them. The owners of the houses will live in one of the new homes and sell the other two, each for around $1.5 million.
