Community groups have applied for $370,000 from Nelson City Council, the only problem is the council only has $150,000 to give away. Members from the 71 applicants spoke to councillors on the community services committee on Monday, with the councillors due to make their decision on who get what today.
Of the 71 applicants for the community assistance funding, 34 were for contracts and 37 for one off-grants, and that included groups like Adult Learning Support, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Nelson Civic Choir, Victory Boxing Club and the Tahunanui Community Centre. In total, the community assistance funding had a pool of $388,700 this year, but
only $150,300 remains. Chair of the community services committee, Pete Rainey, says it’s always tough deciding who gets what. “It’s always a challenge. It’s tricky and there’s always winners and losers in a situation like this, but we’re going to put in a really big effort to get it as fair as possible.”

The conversion from rugby clubrooms to shopping complex is almost complete, with the Mad Butcher due to open its doors in early November.
