A Nelson woman has been conned out of $250,000 in an online friendship that turned out to be a scam. It’s the latest in the long, and increasing, line of Nelson people who are falling victim to online scammers, mainly via dating or
companion websites. Age Concern Nelson manager Sue Tilby says the problem has been growing over the past year, as trusting older people get more and more computer-savvy. Sue says the quarter of a million dollar rip-off is the biggest she

denial and has still not totally accepted that it was a scam.” Loneliness is a common factor in the cases Age Concern has dealt with and Sue says older people tend to be more trusting, so are open to scammers. “Older people tend to think that
the computer is a trustworthy piece of equipment. It’s quite sad because we want them to get computer savvy because it’s an extension of life, but this is one of the down sides.”

The trust behind a move to build a 14 kilometre pest-proof fence is within touching distance of reaching its fundraising target after the government chipped in $216,000 on Friday. The sanctuary will also deliver economic benefits to the region as a tourist attraction.” The trust still needs some more money, but is hopeful construction can begin this Spring.

In another case, a Nelson man made a group of “friends” online who later scammed him. But Sue says it’s an ongoing case as he still believes he hasn’t been scammed. “He considered that they had his best interests at heart and as that friendship developed, so did the scamming. It’s very serious.” Nelson internet safety expert John Parsons, says he’s not surprised as he’s also dealt with an increasing number of cases where scammers are fooling locals. In one case he worked on, a Nelson woman sent $28,000 to a scammer off-shore. “When I met her she was on the verge of losing $100,000. By the end of working with that family we had to refor-
mat the computers, had to change the land line and we had to give her another cellphone. We had to alert all the other members of her family because she’d given up personal information about all of them during the forming of the relationship.” He says that personal information will be sold to a “suckers list” and they’d be targeted in the future by other scammers. Scammers aim to create a dependency in the relationship, through love or affection, and they’ll then fake illness and say they need money for medical fees. The victim will then send $5000, or $7000 and the amount grows from there. What makes it worse is that many of the people scammed
are contacted six months later by someone claiming to be a lawyer or judge from the country where the scammers live. They’ll say if the victim sends over $5000 they will represent them in court to try and get their money back. John says it’s called a “reload” in the industry. Both John and Sue say many of the victims refuse to accept they’ve been had. “It’s really difficult because people hold so much value in this new-found friendship” says Sue. “These people are so plausible, and feed all the right information to them and offer that friendship.” Other scams that people are falling for here in Nelson include replying to spam emails asking
for bank account details or passwords. Police say there’s not much they can do to help because most of the scammers are off-shore and can’t be tracked down. In response to the increasing number of victims, Age Concern Nelson is hosting a seminar this month called Scam Savvy. It’s aimed at educating people around online scams and will be held at Trafalgar Pavilion. Age Concern are hoping for around 120 to listen to Bronwyn Groot, who is flying in to speak on Thursday, August 21, from 1.30pm. Warming our coldest homes A hundred Nelson homes will be made warmer over the next year thanks to a new $300,000 project aimed at keeping people healthier. The Warmer Healthier Homes Project was announced last week and will see homes insulated for free, which will see huge economic and health benefits to the region, say its founders. The Canterbury Community Trust has partnered with the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust, Absolute Energy, Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority in the project, aimed at providing low-income families, particularly those with high health risks, with warmer, more insulated homes. Canterbury Community Trust’s Bill Dahlberg says the scheme is aiming to retrofit homes with insulation and draught-proof materials, and the initial funding will be made available for people referred by the health board. “Often, people in need don’t

What next for Stoke? Stoke residents have had their say about what they think Nelson’s largest suburb should look like in the future, and the results are due to be released later this month. Nelson City Council released a community survey in May, which attracted
more than 800 replies. It has also been consulting with agencies about what would be best for Stoke. The results of those consultations will be made public at a meeting on August 21. The primary aim of the survey was to understand what Stoke residents want-
ed from the new community/recreation facility proposed for Greenmeadows reserve. But the council also took the opportunity to ask broader questions about the future development of Stoke. The public meeting will be at St Barnabas Church in Stoke, from 1pm.
Dog jumps on learner driver, causing crash A dog allegedly jumped on to the lap of a 16 year old driver, frightening her as she crashed into a power pole. Rosette Hailes-Paku, who has only had her learner’s license for two weeks, was driving down Champion Rd to her home with her mother, 11 year old sister and their pet dog late on Thursday afternoon. Rosette says the dog jumped “on top of me” from the back seat, before the van hit the curb and slammed front-on into a power pole, damaging it, cutting power to the neighbourhood for hours, and putting her sister in hospital. Her sister wasn’t wearing a seat belt and hit the wind-

Rosette was in “real bad shock” when describing the accident. “It was so scary,” she said at the scene, with mascara running down her cheek and being supported by a fellow student and friend from Garin College. “It was such a dumb thing to
do. I thought the power pole was going to explode.” Nelson Police communications manager Barbara Dunn confirmed there were just three people in the van, that the driver was on a learner’s license, and says there is no legal requirement to restrain an animal inside a vehicle,
unless they are on the back of a truck or ute. The crash is still under investigation, so she could not comment on whether the driver would be facing charges. The cost of the power pole and the fate of the car is an insurance matter. The dog is fine.

Broken glass removed from eye of patron Staff at the Star and Garter are deeply upset after a woman, who is one of their regulars, was seriously injured during an incident at the Richmond tavern early on Sunday morning. Nelson police say the woman suffered a serious eye injury, when a member of a group that had been ejected from the tavern on Queen St at about 3am on Sunday threw a glass object at the tavern’s smoking area. The glass object shattered and a shard flew into the eye of the woman sitting in the area. The woman was admitted to Nelson Hospital where she had surgery to remove the glass and was reported to be in a stable condition on Monday. “She is a regular here and we are really concerned about her welfare,” Star and Garter general manager Jerome Nahi says. “She was just sitting there, she was an innocent bystander which made it even worse, we hope she’ll be alright.”
Jerome says the Star and Garter has an excellent security record and is taking the incident very seriously. He says staff are cooperating with police and could not comment on the details of the incident until the investigation was completed. The Star and Garter has a licence to stay open and sell alcohol until 3am on Sundays and needs to vacate patrons by 3.30am. Detective sergeant Mark Kaveney says two people are helping them with their inquiries into the incident, after they appealed to the public for witnesses. The two witnesses are members of the group that was ejected and included the person who allegedly threw the glass object. Mark says he still wants people “who witnessed anything, to come forward and speak to us”. Walkway completion date pushed back The Maitai Walkway is now due to be finished in October, says Nelson City Council, after changes to its original plan forced it to wait for resource consent. The walkway will connect walkers and cyclists from the
city to Nelson marina, and runs along the left bank of the Maitai River. The walkway was originally scheduled to be finished in July, but a plan change has resulted in delays and a cost overrun of $527,000, bringing the total cost to $3.46
million. Mayor Rachel Reese says the council is determined to see it through because it will be “an asset to the community”. The walkway is the first stage of the council’s Rutherford Park redevelopment plan.

Mothers from all over Nelson came together at Victory community centre on Friday, to take part in annual The Big Latch On. The event has been running for ten years and it is hoped that this year will be the biggest demonstration yet, while it also celebrates the natural mother and baby bond. The local women who took part in the big latch on said they felt it was important to come and support and promote breast feeding for women. There are now 28 countries around the world running the event, that include more than 14,500 babies, thanks to the Women’s Health Action initiative.

Thieves were so neat and fast when they removed large shopfront windows, to steal $8500 worth of equipment from two Nelson businesses, the robberies went unnoticed by security guards and staff. About $2500 worth of electrical equipment was stolen from BNT in Richmond on June 24 and three days later a $6500 motorcycle was stolen from Morley Motorcycle and Marine in Wakatu Estate in Stoke. The burglars gained entry to both businesses by removing a shopfront window, and Morley’s managing director Ian Robinson says the burglars were so tidy staff and customers didn’t notice anything was wrong until two days later. “The alarm went off at 4.23 in the morning and our security company was there four minutes later, but they didn’t notice anything obvious was wrong,” Ian says. “I went to work in the morning and we didn’t notice anything either - a lot of sensors had been triggered but we thought it was just an alarm malfunction.

That’s when we realised the bike and window were missing and that we’d been robbed. “We’d had customers in all day and none of them noticed either - one of them said ‘it’s cold in here’ but that was all. We even had to point out the missing window to the police when they arrived.” Ian says the 1.8 metre wide by 0.8 metre high window was hidden behind some trees next to their building.
“It would be quite a mission to get it out. They obviously had the right tools and knew what they were doing.” BNT shop supervisor, Ben Luff says he arrived at work at 7.30 on Friday morning but didn’t initially notice their shop window was missing. “A truck rolled past the front door and I thought “that sounds loud” and that’s when I noticed the window,” he says. Ben says the only good news is that the burglars didn’t damage the 1 metre by 1.5 metre glass and it will be able to be reused.

It’s a big-sized piece of glass so they obviously had some glazier’s tools and the right skills.” Ben says the thieves were also audacious because BNT’s shop front is well illuminated and visible from Oxford St. Nelson police are investigating the burglaries and would like to hear from anyone who has any relevant information. The stolen motorcycle is a 2012 Honda CRF 150cc dirt bike.

‘Steampunkers’ form Nelson group It’s tricky business asking a steampunker to define what steampunk actually is. “It’s a magical place – well, it’s not magical,” Matron Robynellawigger tries to explain. “It’s a glorification of a place that never was. It’s to do with time travel and history,” she says, dressed with a top hat pieced with badges, feathers and a syringe. “It’s a playground for adventure, spectacle, drama, escapism and exploration …but most of all it is fun.” Lady Dorcas Le Seuer, searching for a more simple answer, describes it as a cross between “Victorian honour” and “sci-fi fantasy, before Robynellawigger – real name Robyn Wilks – then declares “it’s whatever you want it to be.” Even though Google will tell you that steampunk is a genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered
machinery rather than any advanced technology, the definition that it’s “whatever you want it to be” sums up the reason why a group of 20-odd steampunkers from Nelson have formed a new social group, called the Hickety Piks Southern Steamers. An interest in steampunk – where the focus is on throwing out the new and bringing in the old world, recognizing a time where “steam was king” – brought the members together. But it’s an opportunity to be a character totally different to their personality which has made it enjoyable for each of them. The Hickety Piks Southern Steamers dress up, go out and “have a good time”. They meet once – sometimes a few times – a month for tea and cakes,
and they’re hoping more locals will join them. “This is a fantasy world, it’s whatever you want it to be. They dress in all sorts of different ideas, people just do their own thing,” says Lady Dorcas le Seuer, real name Deborah Brookes, who prefers to dress in a more Victorian style. “We plan outings and they could be anything, we’re at Melrose House today but next time we could be at the Queen’s Garden. We also want to be part of the Masked Parade and other events in the future.” Robynellawigger says “it’s either your thing or it isn’t”, but they’re looking for new members to join what they expect will be a quickly-growing social group. Businesses band together for bike tracks Simon Bloomberg A trio of trail-blazing contractors have been busy donating their time and machinery to help create mountainbike tracks around the Nelson-Tasman region, and they could get even busier with an ambitious project, to build epic backcountry trails, on the horizon. Last week, Andrew Spittal of Ching Contracting and Gary Donaldson of Donaldson Civil, completed the second stage of the Escalator mountainbike track in the Richmond Hills for the Tasman District Council. Andrew and Gary spent two weeks in diggers, working with Chris Mildon of the Mountainbike Trails Trust, cutting the 2.5 kilometre climbing track that links with the first stage starting in Easby Park. At the same time, Malcolm Edridge of Mike Edridge Contracting, has been working on the new Big Bush mountainbike trails near St Arnaud. All three contractors are providing their excavators and time at no charge and Chris says that’s
reduced the cost of building the tracks by about 80 per cent. “If we didn’t have these guys then a lot of these tracks probably wouldn’t get built - their generosity is amazing.” Chris says Andrew started the philanthropy ball rolling when he worked on tracks in Kaiteriteri a few years ago. Andrew subsequently worked on tracks around Nelson, and now Gary and Malcolm are helping out. All three are executive members of the Nelson Marlborough Contractors Federation and keen mountainbikers. Tasman District Council reserves officer Steve Richards, says Andrew, Gary and Malcolm are adding “tremendous value to the development of the tracks”. The next big mission for the trail-blazing contractors could be the Epic Trails Project. All three contractors are trustees of the Mountainbike Trials Trust which is planning the project, with its next target a loop track from the Hackett Hut to the Starveall Hut, through to the Lee Valley.

Courtesy trailer free loaders Cheeky Nelsonians are using courtesy trailers for more than what they’re intended for, say the businesses that own them. Last month, a customer at Bark Processors in Richmond was photographed buying a trailerload of bark with a Goldpine courtesy trailer. The photo was shared on social media with the caption: “Don’t think Goldpine would be too stoked.” Goldpine manager John McDonald says it’s disappointing that some of their customers would “abuse the privilege” of the courtesy trailers. “Obviously it should be from the store to home and back again. Should I become aware of someone doing it, I would certainly be reluctant to let them take one again.” But he says he wouldn’t start chasing people who do it. “We’ve got bigger things to worry about.” Sand and Land owner Nigel Sutton says he once caught someone towing scrap metal in one of his trailers and he “had a word” when he came back. But that’s the worst case he’s seen. “Most of the time, people ask if they can bring a load of greenwaste back with them because we’re right opposite the dump. I say that’s fine, as long as the trailer comes back clean. “Most people are pretty good.”

Members vote to save Suburban Club Members of the Nelson Suburban Club have voted to dig into their own pockets to try and save the club. Members voted at a special meeting last Thursday night to each pay a $100 levy for five years, seemingly enough to keep the club operating from its Tahunanui Drive premises. The club has been battling financial problems since a downturn in takings, while trying to service a $2.7 million debt. Board chairman Ross Strawbridge says there’s still some water to go under the bridge until the decision is ratified, but

he’s happy the members have stepped up to essentially save it from having to sell and move premises. “We’re very happy that they’ve agreed to support the club going forward. It’s brilliant.” Each of its four thousand-plus members will now pay an extra $100, on top of the annual fee of $45. That extra fee will go to paying-down debt, incurred when the club expanded in 2005 and bought land for its carpark in 2010. Ross says the board has been working extremely hard to make sure the club

survived and he’s happy its members have recognised that. “Assuming it gets ratified at the next meeting, there’s a few other issues that need to be put in front of the club, but they’re not majors, so it will be good to move forward.” The meeting, held last Thursday, was called to discuss three options. They were a compulsory door charge for every visit from each person who entered the club, a potential relocation or the annual $100 levy. Ross says more than 400 people attended the meeting.

Snowboarders to bring top tricks Snowboarders won’t have to go far to find snow this Friday, with two tones of crushed ice being dropped into Mapua for the Playhouse Café’s Jib Jam event. Sponsored by Hogey’s Surf, Sealords, Speights Summit and Placemakers Nelson, the Jib Jam gives snowboarders a rare chance to strut their stuff in front of spectators away from the ski field, with a specially-built rail constructed in front of a threemetre high ramp. This year’s event is free, and Nic Roland, owner of the Playhouse
Café, says the reason for that is to bring in more spectators and competitors. “I’m just a big snowboarding and skiing fan and I love the mountain, so I thought it’d be a no-brainer to bring an event like this to my venue,” Nic says when asked how it started four years ago. “We’ve got the area, it’s custom-made for it and it’s super fun.” The competition will be run as an open jam-style format, meaning riders will have as many chances as possible to perform their best trick within the allocated time.
From there, three skiers and three snowboarders will go through to a final, with one in each discipline crowned the winner. Hogey’s Surf has come on board as a new sponsor in 2014 and is promising a raft of great prizes for competitors, including a brand new Nixon watch for the overall winner. St Arnaud home wins building award
Local builders swapped their tool belts and hard hats for suits and ties at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year regional awards, at the Rutherford Hotel on Saturday night. The event was attended by members of the local building industry. There were 12 goldaward winners from the region who will now be assessed alongside gold-award winners from across the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists, which will be announced in September. The national category winners, and registered master builders supreme awards, will be announced in Auckland in November. This year saw the supreme award for House of the year go to the St Arnaud business Harris Builders, and Blenheim company Roger Hogg Builders took out the Renovation of the Year award.

Choice to 1500 students last year and 94 per cent of the students said they learned something from the presentation. The programme has an annual budget of around $20,000 and is funded by grants, sponsorship and donations as well as a small fee from the schools. Lynda says they would love to win the Charity Drive so they can take YrChoice into more schools and help even more young teenagers make the right decisions. The Car Company Charity Drive competition started last year and offers $10,000 to a non-profit group or organisation in the Nelson-Tasman region. Safety at Sea: • It gets a hammering in the media, in the papers, on the TV. Everyone is always being told to “Wear your Life Jacket”. • This writer now often jokes about it as it appears humour also gets the message across. Recently we attended the very successful Blessing of the Fleet, a beautiful day with threatening weather that did not eventuate until all was over. • What was great to see was the majority of children had a buoyancy aide of some sort on regardless of the size of the boat they were on. • What was a little disappointing was that the number of adults who weren’t wearing and after enquiry didn’t even know where they were kept. A token bag of jelly beans as reward for wearing the lifejacket didn’t seem to entice too many adults to put theirs on. Here is an interesting fact for you. • If you wear a lifejacket (the adult that is) your lifejacket would hold you and your 12 year old up out of the water for a very long time. If the child is the only one with a life jacket on, he or she will not be able to hold you up at all without, most likely, drowning the child. Don’t be the clown this summer – wear it, don’t stow it. • Spring is coming, thank goodness, and with it stronger winds, bigger waves, rougher seas. (sometimes) We look forward to seeing you out there regardless of what type of boating you do. Remember this also, accidents are unexpected. Last spring and summer we rescued many who did not have their lifejacket on. Sheer stupidity. • But wait, there is more, statistics show that most drownings are male adults between 18 and 25, OR 45 to 60. Teens crash stolen car
Two teenagers allegedly crashed a stolen car into the side of a building in Nelson overnight. The pair fled the scene on Parere St shortly after midnight, but were caught by police dogs. “There was a vehicle that was stolen, it was crashed, and two teens were located as a result of tracking by the dog unit,” says Nelson duty
sergeant Mike Wardle. “One of the boys, because of his age, was released into the care of his family, and the youth court process will be following that up this week. “The other was put before the [Nelson] District Court Justice of the Peace this morning, and he has been granted bail to reappear later this week.”

Rare WW2 medals up for auction A rare collection of medals, given to the family of a private after he died in World War 2, will be up for auction next weekend. The medals currently belong to the sister of Nelson soldier G.C O’Connor, and will be sold along with a portrait of himself, a watch, his will and a letter he wrote to his family during the war. Included amongst the medals is a Distinguished Flying Cross, which is awarded to junior officers and senior non-commissioned officers of the Air Force, for courage and devotion to duty. Over 1000 of the Flying Cross medals were awarded to New Zealanders for their actions during the Second World War. Auctioneer John Walker says the collection is an important part of Nelson’s history, and, while he was reluctant to sell such items – as it’s usually encouraged to pass them down the family line – he says the sister does not have any family to pass them down to. “What makes the collection valuable is the rest of
the story. This is the first time I’ve come across a complete collection of his medals, his watch and all of his documentation,” he says. “You’d normally just get one medal, or a set, but not the rest of it. The Flying Cross itself is the most valuable.” In the letter to his family, G.C O’Connor talks about the cigarettes he’s been smoking and requests cake to be sent over, a little piece at a time, by his mother. The will was completed in 1940, but John was unaware of what year he actually died. John expects the set to go for somewhere between $2500 and $10,000, and says it’s the type of collection a museum or a war historian would be interested in. “I think it’ll go to a Nelson person. We’ve got some avid collectors of war memorabilia. A lot of people would buy a medal to fill their collection as well.” The auction will take place at the former Richmond Trading Post building on McGlashen Ave on Saturday from 11am, and features around 300 lots.

Nelson man Arthur Miller, pictured right, has been a road safety campaigner for years and says he wants to see a national road safety awareness day established, called "Save a Life Remembrance Day". Arthur says he's been spreading the road safety message for years but particularly since his stepdaughter was killed on the road in 1984. "It's all about saving lives on our busy roads, save a life. There's a lot of suffering, and a lot of carelessness and non-concentration on the roads."

Tigers reach league final The Richmond Rabbits are back in the TRL final for the third year in a row, but for the first time it’s the Tahunanui Tigers they will have to get past in the decider. Having beaten the Stoke Cobras twice in the past two rugby league finals, the Rabbits now face a spirited Tigers team who clawed their way past the Cobras 26-22 in the semi-final on Saturday. Tigers chairman Paul Lafotanoa says it’s a special achievement for the club to be back in the final, and he believes they have every chance to get up over the Rabbits who saw off the Victory Phoenix Vikings 3214 in the other semi-final. “I think we’ve got every chance. The Rabbits are the form team, they’re unbeaten this year, but they’ve had a couple of close calls and I believe they’re beatable,” he says. “The Tigers will have to step up another level from their game against Stoke.” The only mark against Richmond’s perfect record is a round-robin draw with the Cobras and their

Nelson’s Los is California’s gain Juliana Los is hoping a four year scholarship in California can help kick-start her football career. The 17 year old left Nelson College for Girls last year to attend the Asia Pacific Football Academy in Christchurch, and although still young enough to be at secondary school this year, she’s just flown off to join Saint Mary’s College of California. Juliana – who plays central midfield and has been part of the Mainland Pride squad – took up the four year scholarship after missing out on a spot in the Junior Football Ferns squad for the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup. She hopes training in the professional en-
vironment of a NCAA division 1 college will help her get back in the frame of the national selectors – and if it doesn’t, she’ll have the education to fall back on. “For me there’s football, but then there’s the whole experience, like meeting new people. I want to become a better player but I’m getting an education out of it too. I guess I just want to broaden my horizons and it’ll make me a more well-rounded person by the end of it.” Juliana made a couple of appearances for Nelson Suburbs while she was back home this month, but she was really looking forward to getting some stronger competition on a regular basis in the US.

The Crusaders Super 15 final loss hurt red and black fans across the South Island on Saturday night, but Speight's Ale House owner Gareth Caldwell felt it a little more. Gareth was leading the Nelson Weekly Super 15 tipping competition going into the game, with Bill Liddell and Gavin Snowball one point behind. Picking the Crusaders turned out to be Gareth's undoing though, with Bill and Gavin picking the Waratahs and, as a result, drawing level on the last day of the competition. In what they thought would be a tough introduction to Premier 2 when they met top seed Nelson College for Girls, newly-promoted Jacks Red bought their A game to the Saxton Stadium on Saturday. Lead by captain Sue Hone in perhaps the loudest cheer of the day, the game was underway. The inaccuracy of the college shooters cost them in the first half, converting just 21 of 37 shots on goal as opposed to Jacks 18 of 23. Tanika Langbridge and Kea McGuinniety started in the defensive circle for Nelson, and worked tirelessly to halt the flow of ball to the accurate hands of goal shoot, Moira Raumati and goal attack, Erika Newport. Unfortunately, Tanika retired injured in the second stanza, which saw the introduction of Merekara McGuinniety at goal defence and a re-shuffle of other personnel, Merekara added a bit of bounce to the defensive unit working well in tandem with her sister to pick up a power of turnover ball. Abbey Franklin made a welcome return to netball when introduced at goal attack for the second half, providing the team with a much-needed boost in speed and accuracy. Coach Kathryn Orange made several changes to the midcourt throughout the match in an effort to encourage her girls to find a much-needed lift in

Kath Merritt for Jacks was simply outstanding, spoiling play at will and gaining six intercepts. Her defensive prowess, along with Sue in the first half and Louise Mong-Grassi in the second, had the college girls under pressure throughout. Wing defence, Jodi Mardon, stitched up all her opposites and provided relief through the mid-court on attack, driving strongly into space. Robyn Leonard at centre, up against one of her Tasman U19 charges, had a tidy game, directing and providing a pivotal link with Angie Scoble
who was accurate on the feed from wing attack. Nelson outscored Jacks in three of the quarters, and drew the second, to bring the final scoreline to 46-30. Jacks shooters returned the commendable statistics of 30 from 37 for an average of 81 per cent while Nelson had all but double the attempts, at 73 for an average of 63 per cent. Jacks showed they will be no push-over in the full length (60 minute) game, keeping Nelson to their lowest scoring, and smallest winning margin, in this grade for the season.
KEEP WARM THIS WINTER
The fishing around Nelson has been on the slow side for a while now with snapper moving to the deeper water over winter. There is still the odd big moocher hanging around for those keen enough to put the time in and get rewarded. Good gurnard can be found in Delaware Bay and out wide in Tasman Bay now. Don’t forget to set your flounder net around the estuaries and inlets as good numbers are also showing up. Reports of Blue Cod appearing along the Boulder Bank show that they are probably moving out of the marine reserve due to an increase in numbers, and there have been a few takeable Brim caught in the same proximity. Scallops in Okiwi are in pretty good condition and in reasonably good numbers in Okiwi and Ketu Bays. While the season is still early the signs are good for the rest of the season as they put on some meat weight over the next month or so. Good size Blue Cod have been in abundance around D’urville and some nice snapper have been landed. Nile head has been producing 3-5lb snapper in deeper water. The Kingies are still about, but can be a bit elusive at times and patience is required. Last thing to remember is to get your boat serviced now before the spring rush, as its only 8 weeks before the snapper will be back.
With the cold, wet and wintry days this is the perfect time to thoroughly inspect and carry out some maintenance on your boat trailer. This will extend its life and help promote trouble-free boating. • Obvious items include checking tyre pressures; looking for signs of rust, wear and damage; checking and cleaning lights and reflectors regularly; and lubricating the tow coupling, winch bushes, gears and brake mechanisms. • Salt water and salt-laden air is a trailer’s biggest enemy, and even though your trailer is galvanised, corrosion can still occur. • Always wash your trailer after exposure to salt water and salt-laden wind. Salt deposits will shorten the life of the zinc coating and your trailer. Salt Away is a product that also can help to reduce build-ups of salt deposits. • Periodic washing down, drying and then spraying the leaf springs, will help prolong their life. • Wheel bearings should be checked and re-greased at least twice a year, and replaced if worn – a DIY task. Wash your trailer on a regular basis with a solution of warm water and detergent. The inside of the chassis and cross members can be cleaned out by putting a hose into the drain holes and flushing out. This will help ensure your trailer is set to go for the start of the season.
