Men needed for social dancing Getting men on the dance floor is proving to be a bit of a challenge for a local social dancing group. Quick-stepping dancers from the Nelson Social Dancing Club are looking for new members, but in particular men, to join the club to boost numbers of their already popular dances. The group get together once a month in Stoke to boogie to a live band and share a pot luck supper, and club secretary Tina Simpson says they’re keen for more people to come along. “It is a great opportunity for you and your dance partner to come along and not only benefit from the exercise that dancing offers, but meet some new peo-

THE FRENCH CONNECTION Dumont d’Urville was a remarkable man: conversant in five languages, he was a scientist, natural historian and art connoisseur. In 1827 he traded with Maori near the Boulder Bank and four Chiefs
trusted him sufficiently to stay onboard while the ship returned to Astrolabe Roadstead inside Adele Island, named after d’Urville’s wife. At fifty he was promoted to rear admiral in the French navy and died two years later.
