YOU KIND of get the feeling there’s an avalanche of suburban bank closures on the way. We reveal today ANZ (page 1) is closing its Avonhead branch and moving the people who work there to an expanded Upper Riccarton branch. That’s good news for people in Upper Riccarton but not so good for the people who use the Avonhead branch. The figures supplied by ANZ over bank use paint a gloomy picture – and we can blame it all on the internet. The closure comes as Westpac considers closing their New Brighton, Sydenham and Lincoln branches. Congratulations to Christine Lake (page 1) for her Local Hero medal last week as part of Kiwibank’s New Zealander of the Year Awards. Barry Clarke
