CBHS to meet Nelson in UC champs semi By Gordon Findlater CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High will host Nelson College in the UC Championship semi-final on Saturday as they look to defend their title. CBHS cruised to victory 57-21 in their final round-robin game against Lincoln Combined at the weekend. They previously defeated fourth placed Nelson 13-11 in a tight encounter on June 24. Going into the weekend, CBHS looked odds on to face third placed Timaru Boys’ High in the semi-final. However, St Andrew’s College pulled off a spirited comeback to defeat Nelson 43-42. The win wasn’t enough for fifth placed St Andrew’s to qualify for the top four. They will now turn their attention to the plate competition, played between the fifth to eighth placed finishers. Burnside finished fourth and will play minor premiership winners St Thomas at 4pm, while St Andrew’s finished second and will take on third placed Cashmere High at 6pm. Both semi-finals will be played at English Park. St Andrew’s previously met Cashmere in round two, with Cashmere taking a 4-2 win at the Christchurch Football Centre, where all league games were played this year. St Andrew’s football co-ordinator Matt Jansen said they have learnt a lot since that loss. “[We are] looking forward to playing them again and embracing the challenges that the game will bring. We know that we can play good football on our day,” he said. Cashmere coach Craig Squire is not taking the boys from

St Thomas coach Richard Washington said it will be a fantastic match to be a part of. “As I have always said, any of the top six sides can beat anybody on the day. performance to beat a very capable quality side,” he said. Burnside coach David Williams said getting the defensive line right will be key. “Knocking them in is not the problem, we have scored 50 this season. But we have let a few in, so if we can minimise our mistakes at the back, we will be fine,” he said. All four teams finished the regular season last week with wins, scoring 18 goals between them. Unbeaten CGHS rugby side go for third straight UC Cup By Andrew King CHRISTCHURCH Girls’ High will be looking for a three-peat in the UC Cup when they take on Burnside-Rangi tomorrow. Unbeaten in all eight games

this season, the side has racked up 497 points while only letting in 119. A win will see them clinch the automatic qualifiers berth in the Crusaders region, which will pit them against the top team from

the Highlanders competition on August 26. Southland Girls’ High is the most likely contender for CGHS if they win at 3.30pm at the Ilam Fields. A win in that game then puts them in the mix to compete for the national top
