By Andrew King A quick-thinking neighbour filmed two burglary suspects, helping police catch them a short distance away. The woman on Solomon Ave, Redwood, saw the two men on the property at about 1pm on June 19, and grabbed her phone and started to film them. They left on cycles and she phoned police, giving them a description. Police found a 22-year-old and a 25-year-old in an alleyway off Grimseys Rd, near the rear of the St Bede’s College sports grounds, about 1.5km from Solomon Ave. Police confirmed the two suspects from footage the neighbour had provided, they also had property on them which was allegedly stolen from the address. Both appeared in the district court on Thursday charged with burglary and have been remanded on bail to appear on July 14. No pleas have been entered yet. Further charges could still be laid, Senior Sergeant Stephan McDaniel said. •Turn to page 4

ONE OF the best lines of defence against burglars are nosey neighbours. A noisy dog and burglar alarms help too of course, but a neighbour with a phone is what every would-be burglar dreads. That’s because a photo of a burglar in the act is very hard to defend in court. So a bouquet for the neighbour who took video footage of two burglary suspects (see page 1) last week in Redwood. She called the police who were quickly in the area and two people fitting the descriptions on bikes were stopped for questioning. Once the video footage was examined by police the 22 and 25-year-old were arrested. They have appeared in court and were remanded on bail to next month. Good work nosey neighbour. – Barry Clarke

Jellie Park cycle incentive cut

By Julia Evans SPENDING on cycleways in Christchurch has topped $156 million. But the city council will not continue an incentive programme to get people cycling to Jellie Park Sports and Recreation Centre because there was not enough uptake during the trial. And Fendalton-WaimairiHarewood Community Board members can’t see the logic behind it. During February, to coincide with the Cycle Aotearoa Programe, the trial was run that if you cycled to Jellie Park five times you received a free pool entry and bottle of water. It was deemed a success by board chairman David Cartwright as well as board member and chairwoman of the Jellie Park Bike Initiative Project committee, Bridget Williams. Ms Williams said the initiative provided “simple wins” such as health benefits, easing traffic and boosting cycle numbers. It was intended after the trial that the scheme would be rolled out across all city council sports and recreation centres, such as Pioneer and Graham Condon.

CYCLE: Jellie Park Bike Initiative Project committee chairwoman Bridget Williams wants to see more people cycling to Jellie Park. PHOTO: ANDREW KING But she said a month was not long enough and it would take time for public awareness to build. “I don’t see any harm in it continuing, people just need a wee bit of a carrot . . . good things take time,” Ms Williams said. And Mr Cartwright also said he didn’t understand why it wasn’t continuing. “We’ve spent a significant

amount of money putting cycleways in, it’s a good way to get people using them,” Mr Cartwright said. He said making people leave their cars at home required good infrastructure and a change in attitude. The community board received a report from city council western area operations manager Martin McGregor. It said there were 117 visits

to Jellie Park by bicycle in February. “The programme ran smoothly and had a small to moderate uptake,” Mr McGregor said in the report. But he said the uptake didn’t suggest there is a demand for a permanent incentive. Though it will run again next February at all centres. “This trial has shown that run in conjunction with the nationwide awareness programme during the month of February engagement in the idea of cycling to our centres can be maximised,” he said. The incentive proved there were at least 100 empty car parks that would otherwise have been full during a peak summer month, Mr Cartwright said. The community board also funded bicycle locks for Jellie Park. They are being used 30 times a week and will soon be available at all centres. Plans for campaign to help newcomers

RECOGNITION: Kendo coach Karl Hitchcock with TV3 news anchor Mike McRoberts receiving his award. Right: He is pictured with members of the Canterbury Kendo Club.

Film inspires volunteer’s 30 years of kendo By Julia Evans WITH A name like Hitchcock, it doesn’t come as a surprise it was a film that inspired the Merivale coach who received an award for his volunteer work. First seeing kendo on television in the early 70s, it wasn’t until Karl Hitchcock saw the first Star Wars film in 1977 that he began practising the sport himself. “When I saw it first, it was something I wanted to do and then when the Star Wars movies came out, it made me want to do it even more,” he said. Although he did admit the early Star Wars films didn’t

Tuesday June 27 2017

really get kendo right – it was 1999’s The Phantom Menace that was choreographed by a kendo instructor. “It was the only good thing about that movie,” he said. Fast forward 11 years and in 1988 Mr Hitchcock co-founded the Canterbury Kendo Club – Sei Tou Ken Yu Kai – with Alex Bennett. Last week during Volunteer Week after almost 30 years and 12,000 hours of dedication to kendo, Mr Hitchcock received an award for his service. When it began, Canterbury Kendo was one of the first kendo clubs in New Zealand and the first in the South Island.

“Back in the early days there weren’t many people doing it,” Mr Hitchcock said. Now the club has up to 40 regular members, which the club puts down to his commitment to the sport. Mr Hitchcock coaches both children and adults classes for eight hours a week on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the club’s Sockburn dojo. For Mr Hitchcock, there is a very deep connection to the sport – he finds it centres and relaxes him, helping with his bipolar disorder. “I use kendo as a mirror for my mental health … kendo evens me out,” he said.

By Julia Evans A CAMPAIGN to get strangers smiling at each other could be on the cards for Papanui. Papanui-Innes Community Board members who attended a recent national community board conference have suggested that the board explore a “smile campaign” for the area. Board chairwoman Ali Jones (right) said the idea is based on welcoming new people into the region and community. “We were so good coming together after the earthquakes, people are still doing it really hard in parts of our ward and this is a campaign about telling people they are not alone, we as a community are there to support and help them,” Ms Jones said. The board is looking at including local school students as photographers, designers, videographers to run posts on its Facebook page. She said the idea was inspired by the campaign successfully run by the Ashburton District Council last year.

The district council set up a sofa at events and around the area for residents to stop and have a conversation with a stranger from a different background. However, it ran for the first time in 2015 in Christchurch by the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce as a response to the overseas workers coming for the rebuild. “The premise behind the Ashburton “smile” campaign may not be applicable to a Papanui Innes or even Christchurch context, then again it may be,” Ms Jones said. She said because it’s very early days, the board will need to consider costs and how it implements it – possibly using schools, community groups and local shops. The board will be holding a workshop about how the campaign could be organised in the ward as soon as possible. “The board hopes to have a presentation from the Ashburton campaign team, very soon so we can start to progress things from there,” Ms Jones said.

THE STAR has been judged the best of the best at the New Zealand Community Newspaper Awards. The Star, part of the Star Media Group, scooped the three top awards – best newspaper, most improved newspaper and it also took out the supreme award which covers newspapers, magazines and websites. Venetia Sherson who judged the supreme award category said: “The Star is bold in design and bold in attitude. The Star urges its readers to engage in debate and reflect on the issues it deems important to the community. “Strong grass roots reporting, and tight writing are the hallmarks of the paper. It tackles big subjects with a sure hand and features a good mix of civic issues, crime and community stories.” Mike Fletcher who judged the most improved newspaper category said of The Star: “The paper is a cracker. It is a joy to read. Judging by The Star’s pagination growth, the readers and advertisers like it and value it too. “The Star is filling a vital niche for news and views in Christchurch. Every page is attractive. Every page is interesting.” It was a big night for Star

Media’s team at the awards ceremony which was held in Christchurch on Friday. As well as The Star winning the top three awards, Kiwi Gardener was judged best all round lifestyle magazine, Gabrielle Stuart was the winner of the best senior feature/lifestyle journalist category and Bridget Rutherford was runner-up in the junior reporter and feature writer categories. Star Media also featured in the advertising awards. Rodney Grey was the winner and runner-up in the best adver-

tising portfolio categories and Michaela Bolster was the sales excellence winner. ‘The Star is filling a vital niche for news and views in Christchurch.’ – Mike Fletcher, judge

The awards come at a great time for Star Media – The Star’s readership has increased substantially in the latest Nielsen report. Star Media has a large portfolio of newspaper titles – The Star, Nor’West News, Western News,

Pegasus Post, Southern View, Bay Harbour News and Selwyn Times, magazines Kiwi Gardener, Style, Rugby News and With This Ring, web news site www.star.kiwi and operates several annual events City 2 Surf, the Home & Leisure Show and With This Ring, Bridal Show. we are locally-owned and understand our local market. We strive to be the best in all that we do and it’s satisfying to see all our efforts recognised at the CNA awards. I am so lucky and proud to have such a talented team. “Our aim is to produce publications that fully engage with the audiences they serve. “Our big haul of awards on the weekend and the rising readership of our titles is indicative that we are hitting the mark. “This keeps our audiences engaged and is great news for our advertisers too.”

Your Local Views some point to motor vehicles to reduce the number competing with the cycleway. However, the best solution would have been to build a separate cycle path on this route like the rest of the cycleway and that would shut up the forever moaning car drivers who see it as their right to drive everywhere and at speeds that suit them.

Readers respond to an article in Nor’West News regarding a city council plan to lower speed limits around Canterbury University to make it safer for cyclists.

News

Vaughan Rowe – that won’t make the roads any wider, nor people drive safer, nor cyclists ride safer! Sadly. Gayle Elizabeth Lord – At the rate they are going the city council will have the whole city at 30km. There are schools all over the city without a lower speed limit so why do university students need this? Motorists need to pay attention and cyclists need to also. Have seen some dangerous behaviour from both.

Fashion Pamela Neil – Cyclists need to pay registration! That is being considered in Brisbane. They use the roads for nothing!

millions by building new ones. The university has a much larger student body than schools do and have students coming and going all day. The entrances to schools are busy at 9am and 3pm, they have lower speed limits at those times as well as road patrols, which is enough.

Gardening James David Foote – Cyclists pay for the roads too. We pay our taxes, we pay GST every time we buy something. We live in our homes that we pay our council rates on. Most of us also own a car that we pay our registration on as well as fuel taxes when we fill up. By promoting and encouraging cycling, you add capacity to roads without having to spend

David Butler – Doesn’t work here, you have the chance now to build proper cycle paths like Amsterdam. Cars and bicycles don’t mix.

SLOW DOWN: The proposed area around the university where the speed limit could be reduced. schools too as recommended by the World Health Organisation. Drivers just need to get used to this speed limit, as they have done in Europe. The traffic keeps moving, but at a safe speed.

Trevor Taylor – I think we should have someone carrying a red flag walk in front of every car and truck in Christchurch. That way we will be able to eliminate all vehicles crashes. Nothing is more important than being safe.

Wendy Charlotte Olivier – I have to laugh at this idea, people don’t even keep in the speed limits in a school zone. Bicycles are not meant to be on the roads, it is not fair to put that responsibility on a driver as well as all the other rules they have to keep to. I think cyclists have too much privilege and I think this needs to stop.

Lucinda Rees – How about 30km/h speed limits outside

Jason Gemmill – Absolutely insane! Total madness!

Motoring

Anna Henderson – Yes good idea. A large number of university students cycle (which is a great thing). It’s also very much encouraged by the uni which puts the parking prices up exceedingly high on purpose to discourage driving. Two of my flatmates have been knocked off their bicycles by cars who were completely in the wrong and just didn’t look. At least if they’re going slower it might help. Graham Batchelor – Slowing traffic on this part of the Unicycle should have been part of the original design. I also think that this route which is used as a rat run from Clyde Rd to Kilmarnoch St be blocked at

Tanya Hyde – Not sure if lowering the speed limit would help decrease the number of accidents as it’s ignorant/ inconsiderate driving or cycling that’s the cause. But if a lower speed limit reduces the seriousness of accidents then that’s a start. But we need better education for both motorists and cyclists on keeping them safe on the road. If both switched places for the day they would understand the other side. I drive and cycle in the city and I find it scary being a cyclist and uneasy driving around cyclists. Mel Schmidt – Making the speed limit for cars lower won’t affect the sheer arrogance of cyclists who think the road is theirs.

News Second hearing for liquor store By Julia Evans YET ANOTHER hearing date has been set for the controversial Trafford St liquor store bid. Samarth Rajeshkumar Limbachiya applied for a liquor licence late last year for 2a Trafford St, Harewood, but was withdrawn days before the hearing at the end of March. His submission was then doubled in size to include 2b Trafford St but the opening hours were slightly reduced. It has been met with opposition from residents and community board member. This included a petition with 1100 signatures and 36 individual submissions from residents, churches and the YMCA. A district licensing committee hearing on July 13 and 14 will decide whether or not to approve the application. Petition organisers Bruce Tulloch and Colin Fussell said the location was unsuitable and would attract an unwanted element. St Margaret’s students give Maddie send-off By Julia Evans MADDIE COLLINS was back at St Margaret’s College for one day last week before she boarded a plane bound for the United States. THe 13-year-old received a send-off from school friends and has now landed in the US, headed to the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Maddie has had dialysis for

kidney failure most of her life so her family has raised funds to get more advanced treatment that may make it easier to match a donated kidney. However, it comes at a price – the full treatment is expected to cost about $350,000. Givealittle pages have already raised more than $80,000 for Maddie, as well as donations from the community.

ADVERTORIAL

THE RICCARTON MARKET IS NOT CLOSING! During winter, as expected, the number of stall holders and the number of people coming to the market reduces but we still get in excess of 4,000 people coming every week. One of the strong points about the Riccarton Market is that both entry and parking is free to the public”.

Don’t believe everything that you hear! Despite numerous rumours the popular Riccarton Market is not closing. “It is easy to understand the confusion” says Craig Murphy, President of the Rotary Club of Riccarton. (The Riccarton Market is owned by the Riccarton Rotary Charitable Trust and managed by the Rotary Club of Riccarton). “With much publicity being given to the proposed new housing subdivision on some of the land currently occupied by the Riccarton Racing Club people have missed the point that not all of the land is going to be utilised. Over the next few years land will be progressively developed into residential sections along Yaldhurst Road and Steadman Road and then into other parts of the property. It does not however intrude into that portion of the land currently occupied by the Riccarton market”. Plans released by the developers, Ngai Tahu Properties, show the proposed subdivision being done over 6 stages which when completed will provide approximately 600 new residential sections. “In preparation for the development the Riccarton Market has reduced its footprint and condensed the number of stalls available. The Racing Club has offered other land closer to the entrance in exchange for land surrendered by the market. These new areas will be incorporated into the market over time” advises Ross Binning, Chair of Riccarton Rotary’s Market Committee. “By reducing the footprint now we have been able to provide additional parking for our customers making coming to the Riccarton Market even easier. Over the summer months we have been getting crowds in excess of 10,000 people every Sunday.

HUNDREDS OF STALLS

The Riccarton Market has been in operation for 29 years. Over that time it has moved location several times. From its origins as a ‘car boot sale’ located at the Riccarton Mall carpark, it moved to The Bush Inn, then outgrew sites at Riccarton High School and then at the University, relocating to the racecourse site more than 15 year ago. It has become an institution in Christchurch – described by the Christchurch City Council as ‘an icon’ for locals and tourists alike. It is the largest charity market in New Zealand and with room for over 300 stalls it is arguably the largest weekly market in the country. During this period Riccarton Rotary has donated more than $3 million to local charities and individuals as well as supporting other national and international projects especially at times of emergency. “It is disappointing that people still talk about the Riccarton Market closing” says Craig Murphy. “In many cases those people are directly associated with competitive markets around the city so they no doubt see it to their advantage by creating uncertainty about the future of the Riccarton Market. Be assured the Riccarton Market is here to stay. We have a secure long term arrangement over the Riccarton Park site and apart from some relatively minor redesign of the footprint over the next few years there is nothing that will change as far as our many loyal customers are concerned. They will be able to continue to come for their vegetables, meats, other food items, hardware, tools, furniture, plants, artworks, jewellery, cat and dog needs, clothing as well as to be entertained by the live music and stay and have their lunch from one of the numerous ethnic and specialised food and refreshment stalls located around the central ‘commons’. highlights BHS Stage Challenge 2017 Tragic mine disasters and depletion of fish due to pollution and over fishing were two strong themes portrayed by the Raw and Open Stage Challenge teams at Burnside High School this year resulting in first place for Raw and second place for Open. The Raw team, comprised of Year 9 and 10 students, gave a moving performance based on two of New Zealand’s tragic mine disasters, Strongman and Pike River. There was a personal connection between both as one of the students’ great grandfather was in the Strongman mine disaster in 1967, that killed 19 men and another student’s brother was killed in the Pike River mine explosion.

Mr Holstein Thank you to everyone who attended our Open Night on Tuesday 16 May. We trust you enjoyed your time with us, learned more about our school, and gained an insight into Burnside High School. I am grateful to the 250 volunteer student guides who were proud to showcase their school to you. Burnside provides an excellent learning environment and makes a positive difference to people’s lives. We pride ourselves on being a successful school that is highly regarded in the community for its high-quality, values-based learning and specialist facilities. We are a larger school with a community feel, offering a wide range of opportunities in a safe, friendly atmosphere, and with high standards and expectations of ourselves and our students. Burnside High School bases its culture on a vision of ‘personal excellence and caring for others’. The way students and staff act, feel and think about themselves, and about others, is determined by our key values of being respectful, having pride and striving to excel. Our size and all the advantages that this brings is a point of difference and is what makes this decile 8, state, co-educational school special. The six significant features that make Burnside High School a leader of learning are: • We are a centre for academic excellence with an emphasis on high-quality teaching practices and outstanding achievement. • Our roll of around 2,500 students enables us to provide an extensive, diverse and specialised curriculum that caters for and challenges students of all abilities. • We provide an exceptionally wide range of cocurricular opportunities (music, drama, dance, clubs and sports) for students to enjoy, learn new skills, take leadership roles, and achieve at a high level. • We are a caring school where students are known and supported as individuals in a positive, inclusive environment. • We value effective relationships with parents and the wider community to improve outcomes for students. • We are innovative and responsive to the evolving nature of society through continuous and rigorous review and evaluation of our systems, practices and procedures. Burnside High School, in partnership with parents and caregivers, has the proven ability to assist students develop the skills, attributes, and attitudes to make a success of their lives in the workplace, in the community, and as members of supportive and loving families. I believe in, and am proud of, Burnside High School and feel privileged to be its principal. Phil Holstein, Principal

When we discovered the connection, we realised we had to tell these stories and with the blessing of the families, the team of 100 students won the competition with a powerful and moving performance.

Open Division Second Place.

The following night the seniors performed in the Open section of Stage Challenge. Again the team of 100 performed with passion to warn us of the dangers of pollution and overfishing in our oceans. Clever recycling of costumes of plastic bags and black fabric depicting an oil spill emphasised the theme that you can’t eat money and we need to look after our environment now. Both teams were student-led and the stringent rehearsal schedules and commitment to their teams resulted in deserved results and a greater understanding of two significant events in New Zealand’s history as well as an appreciation of the risks of exploitation of our reserves.

Sports Leadership running for CanTeen On the 15th of May the Burnside High School Sports Leadership classes participated in a 24 hour run to raise funds for CanTeen. This charity supports teenagers suffering from cancer to continue to enjoy life and everything it has to offer. At 3:15pm on the Monday, the continuous run began with fifty students and two teachers making up ten teams who would pass the metaphorical baton to keep moving around the one kilometre track for 24 hours. Many pupils had gained sponsorship per km to help motivate them round the track - with the aid of head torches in the darkness of the night. However, the real motivation came in the form of all the supporters who came and joined in, with staff, ex-pupils and hundreds of Burnside High students jumping on the track throughout the day. There was a very special appearance from the principal Mr Holstein himself, donning his running gear and showing the students how it is done, this provided a big boost for the weary runners. By 3:15pm on the Tuesday, after some much needed complimentary massage the whole team joined together to complete one last kilometre around the

now muddy and worn track. Many of the runners having completed full marathons and beyond, stumbled over the finish line to a well deserved applause from supporters, having completed hundreds of laps and raised thousands of dollars for CanTeen. All agreed the tired bodies, sore muscles and blisters were a small price to pay to bring a little light to their fellow teens struggling against cancer.

Boys’ High bench clinches win By Andrew King LAST-MINUTE heroics are starting to become the norm for Christchurch Boys’ Alex Harford after a late penalty sealed a 13-11 win for the defending champions against Nelson College on Saturday. Harford came off the bench onto the wing, and with 3min to go, slotted the match-winner from 35m on the angle. He had only been on the field for about 10min before lining up the vital nudge. Last week it was Rico Syme who broke the hearts of the opposition with a scintillating 50m dash before Harford kicked

SPORTS the extras to beat St Andrew’s 25-23. Coach Danny Porte said it was a “faultless kick.” “It shows the depth we have in the squad, it is about the full 22 guys not just the starting 15,” he said. The win keeps CBHS at the top of the table. They head into next weekend with a bye, but the team are far from getting a break. “We have Blackrock College

from Ireland on Thursday then we face a challenge from Otago Boys’ High next Tuesday as a school exchange game,” Porte said. Burnside will have to travel north to play Marlborough Boys’ after a 43-12 defeat at the hands of Christ’s on Saturday, while St Bede’s will look to bounce back after their first ever defeat to Rangiora High (21-7) –when they take on Mid-Canterbury Combined. •More sport, page 12 HARD TO STOP: Christchurch Boys’ replacement prop Murphy Kupe charges into the Nelson defenders. FINDING GAPS: Papanui’s Jacob Campbell shows and goes at the South Island championships in March helping his team qualify for nationals in December.

Papanui High grab spot in nationals By Andrew King PAPANUI HIGH have surprised themselves by qualifying for the Touch New Zealand secondary schools nationals in Papakura, Auckland in December. The senior boys’ team will take on the top 16 teams in the country after placing third in the South Island championships at the end of March. School sports coordinator Kirsten Hill said it was a mammoth effort considering the calibre of competition they faced.

“The team decided to relieve the pressure of trying to qualify for nationals, and focus more on using the tournament to gain experience to build for the future,” she said. After some tough battles, they had managed to draw against St Thomas, Southland Boys’ High and beat Otago Boys’ High. In their final game, they needed a draw at least against the more favoured Nelson College team to secure a place at nationals. After a see-saw affair, Papanui pulled away and won by two

which qualified them for nationals. “It definitely exceeded their own expectations,” Hill said. It backed up their third place in the Canterbury regional competition in February. The team is now focusing on putting in a solid showing at nationals. “They have already started training with morning fitness and lunchtime skill sessions while balancing their school work and winter codes,” Hill said.

St Andrew’s on top By Andrew King ST ANDREW’S have scrapped their way to the top of the table of the Connetics first XI championship and will watch with interest from the sidelines tomorrow with the bye. They claimed their sixth win of the season last week beating Papanui 5-0 at the Christchurch Football Centre, where all league games are being played this year. They leapfrogged St Thomas into first place after they were defeated 3-1 by Lincoln last week. The loss to Lincoln is good news for Burnside High as they now have their second chance in three weeks to get their hands on the Connetics Shield, which is considered the Ranfurly Shield of high school football, tomorrow night. They play Lincoln at 4pm with coach David Williams saying they will be up for the challenge again but they will have to play some very

good football to take it. Papanui will want to add another win to their season when they take on Rangiora at 5.45pm. Both teams are coming off losses last week with Rangiora beaten 12-2 by Shirley Boys’ last week. Christchurch Boys’ High will look to bounce back after last week’s loss when they take on Riccarton at 5.45pm. Boys’ High were beaten 2-1 by Burnside last week. St Bede’s will play one of the final games of the night against Christ’s at 7.30pm. St Bede’s will be fresh after having the bye in round nine. Points table 1. St Andrew’s, 19pts; 2. Lincoln, 17pts; 3. Cashmere, 16pts; 4. St Thomas, 15pts; 5. Burnside, 14 pts; 6. CBHS, 12 pts; 7. Shirley, 10pts; 8. St Bede’s, 10pts; 9. Middleton, 8pts; 10. Riccarton, 8pts; 11. Christ’s, 4pts; 12. BROUGHT TO YOU BY... Slow-cooked beef cheek

Mu shu pork (Serves 4 )

(Serves 4 )

Ingredients

Beef cheeks naturally contain a lot of collagen which, when cooked long and slow, converts into a luscious rich texture. The cheeks will be extra tender and flavoursome if prepared a day in advance and will taste even better. Ingredients 6 cups Beef stock 3 Tbsp Rice bran oil ½ cup Carrot, diced ½ cup Onion, diced ½ cup Celery, diced 3 Garlic cloves, peeled and sliced 1 Tbsp Tomato paste 2 cups Red wine 1 Bay leaf 4 sprigs Fresh thyme 1 sprig Fresh rosemary, small 1.2 kgs Beef cheeks, 1 cheek per serve 1 tsp Salt Directions Heat the oven to 140 deg C. Bring the beef stock to the boil. Heat the oil and fry the

vegetables, garlic and tomato paste for 10 minutes to lightly caramelise. Turn the heat up to high, add the red wine and reduce by half. Season the beef cheeks with salt and pepper then place them in an ovenproof casserole (or use a slow cooker). Add in the reduced wine and vegetables. Add the herbs and cover with beef stock. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook in the oven for 3 hours. To make the glazing sauce,

Gold OR GREEN Kiwifruit Envy Apples Shanghai Bok Choy or Pak Choi Loose Ginger Courgettes Rolled Beef Roast Chicken Breasts

strain off half the cooking juices into a saucepan, bring this to the boil and reduce until thick and syrupy. To serve, gently reheat the cheeks in the remaining cooking juices. When hot, carefully lift them out and place them into the glazing sauce. Smother with sauce and serve with creamy potato mash and a warm salad of greens (I have steamed brussels sprout leaves, peas, and broad beans, then tossed them with a little olive oil and sea salt flakes).

NOR’WEST NEWS

Parents of Year 6 students are encouraged to take a good look at their child’s full primary school when choosing schooling for 2018. Why change schools when you don’t need to? Full Primary schools are tried and tested and have developed in innovative and cost effective ways since their inception in 1877. They are as important to the provision of education in 2018 as they were in 1877.

What makes them successful? • They have evolved over time and have responded to the different demographic changes since 1877. • They are located in neighbourhoods; they cater for families and respond to community needs. • They are staffed by highly trained teachers who know curriculum levels from Level 1 – 5 who have had the same teacher training as teachers in other Year 7 and 8 school types. • Teachers in the student’s current full primary school know about individual students learning progress and learning style from Year 1 – 8.

What does the research tell us about the learning needs of Year 7 and 8 students? • Curriculum that is relevant, challenging, integrative, and exploratory • Multiple learning and teaching approaches • Assessment and evaluation programmes that promote quality learning • Organisational structures that support meaningful relationships and learning

• Developing the whole child, flexibility, nurture, innovation and child centred learning sum up full primary schools.

• Educators who value working with the age group

• Year 7 and 8 students are the leaders and role models along with the adults in a full primary school with opportunities to nurture Year 1 – 6 students.

• School-wide efforts and policies that foster health, wellness, and safety

• School organisation in a full primary school fits the needs of students not the timetable. • All Year 7 and 8 students are included in leadership opportunities, sporting opportunities, school community job opportunities, buddy responsibilities and role model expectations. They are seen by others in the school as the leaders and younger students look up to them. • These opportunities and strategies to build leadership, key competencies and resilience are available to all Year 7 and 8 students in a full primary.

• Courageous, collaborative leadership

• Multifaceted guidance and support services • School-initiated family and community partnerships

Looking at the above list it becomes clear that it isn’t school type or school buildings that make the difference for Year 7 and 8 students. It is instead the innovative approach to learning and the attitude of professionals toward this group of students. This can happen in any school setting as long as the leadership, teachers and non-teaching staff are committed to the social and emotional development of this group of learners. Full Primary Schools are providers of Year 7 and 8 education in every way that other types of schools are.

And also

• From the broader ‘teaching and learning literature’, there is strong evidence that the quality of teaching which students receive at all levels and stages of schooling is of major importance in influencing achievement outcomes for students. • While productive and positive student-teacher relationships are identified as an important characteristic of highly performing schools catering for middle years’ students, it needs to be acknowledged that good teachers and school leaders at all levels of schooling is what works. • It is therefore debateable whether at least some aspects of the philosophy and enactment of middle schooling is any different from ‘good’ teaching and effective schooling generally in all school types.

The literature is clear in advocating ‘middle schooling approaches focusing on quality teaching and enhanced learning’ rather than on school type. Therefore it is what happens in the classroom to support learning and what happens across the school to cater for the specific developmental, cognitive, physical, emotional and social needs of Year 7 and 8 that makes the difference. Not school type. The research on middle schooling and its implications to provide quality education to Year 7 and 8 students is as applicable to full primary school as it is for other schooling types.

A bright future at Shirley and Avonside With a brand new state-of-the-art campus on their horizon and a host of new opportunities to offer students, it is a great time to enrol at Shirley Boys’ High School and Avonside Girls’ High School. The two schools will relocate to their new site, at QEII Park, in time for Term 2 of 2019, so students who enrol for next year will be at the new schools in their second year of high school. Being able to start from scratch has enabled the architects to create the ‘ultimate campus’. It features a large Performing Arts Centre (with a 750-seat and a 100-seat theatre), three full-sized gyms (complete with climbing wall), a cultural space and four sportsfields. Each school will also have a long list of its own specialist learning facilities, including: • Electronics Lab • Recording Studios • Editing Suites • 2D and 3D Printing Room • 6 Science Labs • An Indoor Fitness Centre Avonside Girls’ principal Sue Hume says the students will spend most of their day in a single sex environment. “That’s important to us. The research clearly shows that single sex education benefits both girls and boys...boys do better academically and girls participate more when they have space to learn and focus away from the opposite gender,” says Sue Hume. Shirley Boys’ High School headmaster

Avonside Girls’ principal Sue Hume and Shirley Boys’ High School headmaster John Laurenson

John Laurenson says being co-located will enable both schools to offer their students more. “We’ll be able to work together to deliver more specialist subjects so we can widen our curriculum and we will be able to co-operate on things like school productions. Obviously there will be lots of social and educational advantages to this.” A large bus network is being created to help make travelling to and from the campus easy, and the schools are also working with local authorities to create safe cycling and walking routes to the site. While the new zone hasn’t been finalised yet, the schools’ intake for next year will be based on their current zones. That is good news for any families considering out-of-zone enrolments. Much of the school’s existing zones now sit in the residential red zone so there is plenty of space.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

New hope for patients suffering from MS, strokes or spinal injuries

23

Special offer for JUlY - if you have suffered a stroke, spinal injury or have MS, then this article is for you.

For those seeking relief from pain caused by injury, and other physical and mental health issues, Chinese health practitioner Dr Lan Xiao offers a method of treatment that brings fast, and often immediate results. A graduate of Beijing Medical College, Dr Lan established an acupuncture clinic in Christchurch in 1993. As she continued her research and medical practice, she discovered a reflexology network on the human body, an exciting new discovery that became the foundation of her new treatment – acupuncture without needles. Instead of needles, Dr Lan uses a blunt instrument to stimulate the reflexology points on the face or other parts of the body. When the point is stimulated by pressure, a message is sent to the repair centre to promote healing. As Dr Lan explains, the treatment increases energy, which boosts the body’s healing system. The body will heal injuries naturally, she says, but that is a slow process. In addition, many people will start to use their injured part, for example a knee or an ankle, before it is properly healed, therefore prolonging the injury and even causing chronic pain. With her powerful treatment, results are produced very quickly – even instantly. She likens it to the differences between the power of a car – natural healing, of an aeroplane – other types of natural healing, and of a rocket –

reflexology network. It brings fast results because it is a very precise treatment, Dr Lan says. She uses it to treat people of all ages with many different types of pain in all parts of the body, including arthritic pain, MS, and pain from injury, and there are no side-effects. Depression and anxiety, often the result of ongoing low energy, can also be overcome with Dr Lan’s treatment. Dr Lan’s treatment can give amazing, instant improvement for muscle weakness and numbness caused by nerve damage such as MS, stroke and spinal injury. Search You Tube for Dr Lan reflexology to see lots of instant results videos. Dr Lan has published a book, Dr Lan’s Reflexology Network, which introduces the treatment and explains how it works. Her website, www. drlansreflexologynetwork.co.nz, includes treatment videos, where people who have had the treatment speak about the fast relief it has brought them. Dr Lan is offering 10 patients of stroke, 10 patients of MS and 10 patients of spinal injury half price for their rehabb. Phone 323 4168, mobile 027 231 8388.

Appealing new dwelling that epitomises stylish, functional living in every detail of this exceptional family home. Boasting high-quality fixtures and fittings and occupying a 609sqm back section in an enviable location, this stunning home is a ‘must see’! Oozing contemporary style and executive finesse, the exterior of this inviting 253-sqm house is adorned with beautiful stone feature detailing and timber accents. While inside, the space opens to a welcoming separate entranceway, 4 double bedrooms (master with ensuite and walkin robe + 3 doubles with built-in robes), 2 further bathrooms and toilets, a study, plus a separate laundry with back-door access. The open plan kitchen/dining/ living area with fresh, modern décor sets the tone throughout. The spacious kitchen really impresses with a large under-bench oven, 5-burner gas cooktop, dishwasher, rangehood and walk-in pantry, plus an engineered stone finish for optimum style. Large picture windows and doors off the living area drench the entire property in natural light. Finished to an exceptionally high standard, there’s also a gas fire, heat pump, double glazing throughout plus under-tile heating in the entranceway, kitchen and all 3 bathrooms. Through the expansive opening doors and out onto the large deck, the delightful entertainment area is perfect for summer drinks and BBQs, while the grass and garden area create a

spacious haven for the children and pets to run around in. The north-facing aspect of the property ensures sun, sun, sun, while double off-street garaging with internal access plus generous off-street parking spaces complete the appeal. Located just minutes from a handy supermarket, local eateries and amenities, this property is also zoned for excellent schools - including Fendalton Primary, Cobham Intermediate, Burnside High, CBHS and CGHS (January 2018) - all of which help to underpin the strength of your investment.
